Riding the Étape du Tour - What you need to know

The étape du tour is arguably the most famous mass participation bike ride in the world. here’s what you need to know about riding it..

What is Étape du Tour?

Étape du Tour is a timed event that’s run every year on a full stage of that year’s Tour de France . It’s run by the Tour de France organisers, ASO, using similar race-day logistics to the Tour itself. That means you get Mavic on-road mechanical support and feedzones as per the Tour.

In short, it’s as close to riding the Tour de France as you (and around 15,000 others on the day) are likely to get. 

The race is essentially run for amateurs but it’s open to anyone 18 years or over on race day. (Younger riders can enter with parental permission).

We say it’s aimed at ‘amateurs’ but it also attracts future and ex-pros. Greg LeMond, Raymond Poulidor and Miguel Induráin have all ridden it. Christophe Rinero won it in 1993 and went on to finish 4th in the Tour de France five years later. Blaise Sonnery won it in 2006 before joining Ag2r-La Mondiale, French national road race champion Dimitri Champion won it in 2009 and ex-Cofidis rider Jeremy Bescond triumphed in 2015.

When and where is it held?

It’s always in July and always during the Tour de France, usually a few days before the stage is used for the Tour. The route changes every year as it's based on an actual TdF stage, but it’s almost always a mountain stage in the Alps or the Pyrenees. In 2009 it finished on Ventoux.

How tough is the Étape du Tour?

Well it’s a full stage of the Tour de France and it’s a timed race: it’s tough.

A time schedule is published in the leadup to the race. This outlines when the roads open again. Riders are eliminated if they fall too far behind the schedule – this ensures the roads can be opened to local traffic again on time. If you’re worried, you can use the schedule to work out what sort of pace you need to keep to stay ahead.

A ‘time schedule’ car runs at the back in line with the time schedule (a bit like the Tour’s broom wagon). If the car overtakes you, you’re out. If you’re overtaken, you and your bike get a free ride to the finish.

How do I enter?

The stage that’s being used is announced every October on the same day as the full Tour de France route is announced for the following year.  Entry opens a few days later. You need to register via the link that’s provided each year on the official Étape du Tour website .  

How much does it cost to enter?

In 2020, basic entry costs from €119.

For the basic entry price, you get a race number, bike number plate and an electronic chip to record your time, a goody bag with practical info and various freebies from sponsors, plus access to the start and finish villages. You also get on-road support: free medical and mechanical assistance, feed stations and transport to the finish line if you have to pull out.

At the finish line you get a medal and access to the now-famous Pasta Party at which you can share war stories with other riders. 

You may also need to budget for various other add-ons, such as transfers from the major airports near to the stage for before and after the event (these can be arranged via links on the official website), and souvenirs like race photographs.

Can I hire a bike?

Yes, but plan ahead as hire bikes can be in short supply the closer you get to July. If you need help, you can use our bespoke bike hire service . If you're bringing your own bike, we have this info on shipping bikes to France in case you want to send your own bike and kit ahead. 

Where do I stay?

It depends on the route each year – some stages are easier to get to/from than others. We strongly advise staying at a bike-friendly B&B or hotel near the stage so you can benefit from their local advice (and support services such as transfers). See the relevant stage on our Tour de France accommodation page for contacts. 

For campers, there’s a specific area set aside for campervans each year – keep an eye on the official Étape du Tour website for info.

Can I take a tour?

Yes, if you need help with the logistics (race week preparations and warm up rides, accommodation, transport to/from the start/finish, bike hire, etc), there are companies out there that can take care of it all for you. If you use our bespoke tours service , we’ll match you up with a suitable local company.

What else do I need to know?

As with all competitive (and some non-competitive) cycling events in France, everyone who registers needs to have a medical certificate. (You’ll need to present this when you pick up your dossard). Riders with racing licenses are sometimes exempt, but it depends on your federation. The Étape website has full details and a template you can take to your doctor to have signed off (in English).

Tour de France 2023, étape 8 : Profil et parcours détaillés

Samedi, les coureurs du Tour de France 2023 vont disputer la 8e étape entre les villes de Libourne et Limoges. Et au terme d’un parcours de 200,7 kilomètres et un profil vallonné dans le final notamment, des coureurs du type de Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) ou le sprinteur Jasper Philispen (Alepcin-Fenix) qui passe les côtes sans trop de difficultés, sont les favoris du jour. Les puncheurs et les échappés sont les candidats à la victoire de l’étape du jour.

Le peloton va s’élancer de Libourne à 12h30 pour le départ fictif. Après un défilé neutralisé, les coureurs vont atteindre le kilomètre zéro et à 12h45 le départ réel sera alors donné. Les premiers coureurs à franchir la ligne d’arrivée sont attendus aux alentours de 17h15 (44 km/h de moyenne). Les coureurs vont évoluer à travers les départements de la Gironde, la Haute-Vienne et la Dordogne.

Les puncheurs ou les sprinteurs vainqueurs à Limoges ?

A regarder le terrain de jeu de l’étape du jour, force est de reconnaître qu’ils vont être nombreux à souhaiter prendre la bonne échappée. Et si quelques puncheurs dignes de ce nom, spécialistes des classiques notamment, sont présents dans le groupe de tête, alors la victoire se jouera à l’avant de la course tandis que le maillot jaune passera à priori une journée sans encombre. A contrario, si les Wout van Aert et compagnie n’ont pas pris le bon wagon, il y a fort à parier que l’échappée du jour sera vouée à l’échec.

Du côté du parcours et du profil de l’étape du jour , les coureurs vont bénéficier d’un terrain plat durant les 125 kilomètres de cette huitième étape. Et c’est au kilomètre 130, avec la première ascension du jour, la Côte de Champs-Romain (2,8km à 5,2%) fera son apparition, à 300 mètres d’altitude. Puis ce sera une succession de montées et de descentes non répertoriées avant d’atteindre le final de l’étape et la Côte de Masmont (1,3km à 5,5%) suivie de la Côte de Condat-sur-Vienne (1,2km à 5,4%) . Après une légère descente, tout le peloton filera vers Limoges et la ligne d’arrivée. Le dénivelé positif du jour est de 2000m D+ .

Le sprint intermédiaire se disputera au kilomètre 79, à Tocane-Saint-Apre.

Le programme TV du samedi 8 juillet

Ce samedi 8 juillet et à l’occasion de la 8e étape du Tour de France 2023 vous allez avoir rendez-vous avec soit Alexandre Pasteur, Yoann Offredo, Laurent Jalabert, Marion Rousse et Thomas Vockler sur France 3 à partir de 11h55 puis France 2 à partir de 15h . Du côté de la chaine payante par abonnement, les images seront diffusées en direct à partir de 12h45 et jusqu’à 17h30 sur Eurosport 1 . Et dans ce cas les commentaires seront assurés par Guillaume di Grazia assisté de ses consultants TV que sont Jacky Durand et Steve Chainel. L’émission « Les Rois de la Pédale » précèdera et succèdera l’étape du jour. Sur la même chaine, une rediffusion du résumé est proposée à partir de 22h05 (55 minutes).

On se rapproche du secteur des vacances de MVDP lorsque Adolescent il venait passer les vacances avec son frére chez son grand pére Raymond Poulidor s’il n’est pas au service de l’équipe pour son sprinter je vois bien MVDP gagner…? Concernant WVA son équipe va vraisemblablement le préserver en vue de l’étape du Puy de Dome..?

Histoire de duels, comme dans l’histoire du Tour, et certains champions de l’époque actuelle s’y prêtent bien… Demain sera le souvenir d’hier, Anquetil face à Poulidor, mais pour aujourd’hui, entre les duels Vingegaard-Pogacar, peut-être Van Aert face à Van der Poel ?…

The 31st edition of the Étape du Tour will take place on 9 July 2023.

The course follows the same route as stage 14 of the 2023 Tour de France, starting in Annemasse and finishing in Morzine. Entries will open on Wednesday 8 November.

The 152km route takes in more than 4,100 metres of elevation gain, including the climbs of col de Saxel, Col de Cou, Col de Feu, Col de la Ramaz and Col de Joux Plane.

L'Etape 2023 - a case of déjà vu?

Etape veterans might notice the finish of the 2023 route looks familiar. That's because the final two climbs, Col de la Ramez and Col de Joux Plane, also featured in the 2016 Etape du Tour.

That's not a reason to skip the 2023 edition though, as the opening 100km take in a number of new climbs.

Col de la Ramez and Joux Plane are well worth a second visit too - with the latter rated as tougher than Alpe d'Huez by Sportive.com publisher Joe.

Here's what Joe had to say about the final two climbs back in 2016:

COL DE LA RAMAZ

The third climb of the day is the Col de la Ramaz which sees Etape riders climb 1,014 metres over 15.5km to the 1,619 metres summit. It has an average of 6.1% slope but that doesn't really tell the full story. The initial 6km goes at roughly 5%, followed by one kilometre of flat, before another kilometre at 8% and then two kilometres at a leg sapping 10.4%. After that you have a kilometre at 8.6%, then two kilometres at around 6.5%. The good news is that the final 500 metres of the climb is almost totally flat. For most Etape riders this will be a tough climb in the heat of the day - you will need to take this steadily and ensure that you are drinking plenty of water because if it is a hot day (and it very often is at this time of year) then the Ramaz will take a lot of energy out of you. For an average Etape rider the total climb is probably around 75 minutes and you should not think of this simply as the warm up to the Col de Joux Plane. The scenery is beautiful - plenty of hairpin bends at the start of the climb, followed by Alpine pastures and then the snow tunnels on the upper reaches. The surface will have been replaced for the Tour, removing one of the main complaints about the ride currently.

Off the top of the Ramaz (we think there will be a feed station at the top but it is possible ASO will decide there is not enough space for anything other than a water station) there is a nice long descent of 16km with a vertical drop of 960 metres. At the top it is a quite narrow road and you will need to be careful if you are surrounded by other riders; fortunately by this stage of an Etape the groups have usually sorted themselves out and you should be riding with people roughly the same speed as you. Towards the bottom of the descent as you get nearer Taninges the road gets wider and it should be a rapid and enjoyable ride. The town itself is not unpretty - it has Roman origins - and we expect there to be a feed station somewhere on the outskirts of the 3,000 population location.

From Taninges there is then a 13km drag along to Samoëns. We imagine you will be routed along the D907, which is mildly uphill (just 78 metres ascent over 13km) but will probably feel like somewhat hard work in the midday sun. You will ideally want to get yourself into a group on this section.

Samoëns is a pretty town, famed for its stonemasonry which were supplied by the numerous limestone quarries in the area. The town is dominated by a pretty (traffic free) square with a huge lime tree and nearby is an Alpine botanical garden. If you want to get your family to come and support you then Samoëns would be an excellent base, especially as it has a reputation for excellent Savoyard food.

COL DE JOUX PLANE

To be totally honest, we were quite surprised to see this stage chosen because of the toughness of the Col de Joux Plane. At 11.6km long with an average slope of 8.5% it is unrelenting. And at the end of a long ride it will be challenging for even the most race fit rider. If you haven't trained enough this will be a climb that finds you out. It starts with about 750 metres at 8.5%, followed by a 12% ramp for 300 metres, followed by a short section at 5% and then two kilometres at 8.5%. A short 'break' of 500 metres at 5% allows a little recovery but then you have 2km at 7%, 600 metres at 10.8% and then follows the last 5km at an average of just over 9% along exposed slopes with absolutely no shelter. Most people who have ridden this will admit that while it is not one of the 'iconic' climbs, the Joux Plane is one of the toughest in the northern Alps. Pantani ascended this climb in 33 minutes - if you manage to do this in double that time then 'chapeau' to you! Personally I rate this as a harder climb than Alpe d'Huez.

From the Ranfolly down to Morzine it should be pure joy and relief but you do need to be wary. The 11km descent is at an average of 6.5% with a maximum slope of 11.1% and while it is steep and technical at the top it is also fun. However when you are tired after a long day riding it is something that will test your reflexes and you should not relax and think this is just the final run in to the finish line. There are plenty of tight hairpin bends with steep slopes to keep you occupied. There is a small ascent on the ride into the centre of Morzine to tackle in the final kilometre but if you have got this far the adrenaline will keep you going and the thought of a refreshing beer (or about 16 hours in bed) should take your mind off the pain.

How to enter L'Etape du Tour

Entries for L'Etape du Tour 2023 will open on Wednesday 2 November.

For those looking ahead to logistics, the nearest airport to Annemasse is Geneva located 28km away - about 30 minutes drive.

The finish in Morzine is roughly an hour from Annemasse by car via toll roads, or 1h 20 without tolls.

A look back on L'Etape du Tour de France

One month ago, 9,000 riders crossed the finish line of the biggest cycling sportive in the world, the flagship of our series of events: L'Etape du Tour de France. But there's more to it than just a sportive on the Tour de France's roads.

Finally back after being cancelled for 2 years due to Covid-19, L’Etape du Tour was coming back with a really hard course. 167 km and 4700m of elevation were waiting for the 16,000 participants. 3 mythical climbs were on the menu: Col du Galibier, Col de la Croix de Fer and Alpe d’Huez. Out of the 3, the Col de la Croix de Fer was probably the hardest and the one which have been misjudged by a lot of riders. Some of them were already walking up this second climb with cramps, definitely not the best of indications with still more than 50 km to go!

L'Alpe d’Huez was the shortest of the 3 but proved to be a real struggle, especially with the heat and the lack of shade that provide this road and its 21 legendary hairpins.

At the front of the race, Stefan Kirchmair crossed the line first in 5:17:27 while the first woman was Flavia Oliveira in 6:31:58.

A race within the race

L’Etape du Tour de France is also where the winners of L’Etape Championships are crowned. L’Etape Championship is a competition running every year from July to July in which riders from all around the world compete. To qualify, you need to finish in the top 3 of any L’Etape by Tour de France event (separate classification for men and women), you will then automatically be at the start of L’Etape du Tour de France in the first wave to compete against L’Etape winners from other countries.

In the men’s race, Michal Kollert took the win by finishing 15th. He was the winner of L’Etape Czech Republic 2 months ago, of which he also finished second last year. The women’s championship was won by Lais Saes from Brazil who finished second in the race! Coming from L’Etape Rio (2nd in 2022, 1st in 2021), it was quite an achievement to set foot on the podium of such a mountainous course. The 2023 L’Etape Championships starts this weekend at L’Etape Edmonton!

Marek’s challenge

Due to the Covid spike just before the event, many of our Social Riders could not come to L’Etape du Tour. Marek was the only one able to make the trip from Slovakia to Briançon. His height and weight are definitely his strength on flat terrain but were not a great advantage when 4700m of elevation await you! As he told us the day before during our training ride “I just hope to finish the race, and not to die on some climb”. That would be quite a challenge for the Slovakian giant!

We caught up with him on the Col du Galibier, where he was still feeling good, despite the heat starting to be an extra challenge for all the riders “It’s not easy, but I’m enjoying the landscapes, it’s really beautiful! And I’m trying to keep my legs fresh to be able to finish the race”. Well, after taking a few stops on the Alpe d’Huez to recover, he eventually crossed the line in slightly less than 9 hours! Congratulations Marek, you’re a L’Etape du Tour de France finisher!

An international event

L’Etape du Tour is getting more and more crowded with riders from all over the globe, most of them coming from countries where an event is part of L’Etape by Tour de France series. About 35% of riders are coming from abroad to take part in this unique event and 70 countries are represented.

All along the route, it’s easy to spot where is cyclist is coming from thanks to the little flags on their race number. That’s what we did at some feed zones to ask participants from L’Etape countries what they were thinking of the event and how their race was going.

With his beautiful jersey from L’Etape Czech Republic, we met Petr at the top of Galibier: “I’m feeling good, I’m trying to keep the power not too high, because it’s a long day, you have to save your energy. Compared to L’Etape Czech Republic, it’s not even comparable, it’s so hard!”

At a crowded feed zone in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, Serena, from the USA, was standing out with her pink jersey. As a lot of riders, she was worried of what was coming ahead, with still Col de la Croix de Fer and Alpe d’Huez to climb. “I’m eating every 45 minutes, I’m feeling alright but I know that what’s coming is horror and death” she said laughing.

After such a hard race, amongst all the tired riders trying to recover just behind the finish line in Huez, you could not miss Arthur’s jersey with a big Brazilian flag all over it. He still looked fresh and was happy to tell us what his experience was on the day: “It’s a fantastic feeling, to have the chance to ride on the roads the professional riders are going to take in a few days. I’ve done L’Etape Brasil 6 times, this is the closest it gets to a Tour de France experience in Brazil and I love it.”

Few events capture the imagination quite like the Tour de France. A spectacle of endurance, strategy, and sheer will, the Tour is also a visual feast, not least because of its iconic jerseys. Each jersey not only signifies a leader in a particular section of the race, but also carries a rich history, symbolised through its distinctive colour or pattern. L’Etape du Tour Is Coming Back to America

The popular fondo is heading to to San Antonio and Las Vegas this spring.

The Texas iteration will take place on Sunday, April 16 and will include 100-mile, 60-mile, 25-mile, and family and kids ride options, starting in northwest San Antonio before heading out into Texas’s famous hill country on fully and partially closed roads. Riders looking to test their mettle against the best around can sign up to race the 100-mile route, which boasts 5,400 feet of climbing. Meanwhile, the 60-mile route features 3,000 vertical feet, while the 25 will see riders climbing almost 900 feet.

A few weeks later, on May 7, 2023, L’Etape will head to Las Vegas, Nevada , where riders can choose from routes of 75, 45, 25, or 10 miles, as well as a kids race. The hundred-milers have nearly 6,500-feet of climbing to look forward to, with 3,000 and 2,000 vertical feet awaiting the 45 and 25-mile riders, respectively.

L’Etape du Tour was started in 1993, in an effort to give amateur riders a taste of what a Tour de France stage really feels like. Each July, on a Tour rest day, as many as 15,000 cyclists gather to ride what is usually considered the Tour’s toughest stage (normally an Alpine or Pyrenean climb). Some riders race. Most just grit their teeth and try to finish.

Interest in L’Etape has been so massive, the company behind the sportive and the Tour itself, Amaury Sport Organisation, has expanded the events over the last few decades, now hosting L’Etape fondos in nearly twenty nations around the world.

PARCOURS 2024

TOTAL :  3492 km

Ce sera le premier Grand Départ depuis l’Italie et le 26e depuis l’étranger. Arrivée à Nice. En raison des Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques de Paris et , pour la première fois, l’arrivée finale n’aura pas lieu dans la capitale.

Deux contre-la-montre 25 + 34 soit 59 km, dont le second lors de la dernière étape Monaco > Nice. Ce dénouement final n’était plus arrivé depuis 35 ans et le fameux duel Fignon - LeMond en 1989.

• Apennins (Italie), Alpes italiennes et françaises, Massif central et Pyrénées seront les massifs montagneux au programme du Tour en 2024.
• Le nombre de pays visités en 2024 : Italie, Saint-Marin, Monaco et France . Dans l’Hexagone, 7 Régions et 30 départements seront sillonnés.
• Le nombre de points bonus 8, 5 et 2 secondes aux trois premiers coureurs classés, attribués à des endroits stratégiques du parcours (sous réserve d’homologation de l’Union cycliste internationale) mais sans incidence sur le classement par points. Des bonifications de 10, 6 et 4 secondes aux trois premiers coureurs classés seront octroyées aux arrivées des étapes en ligne.

Sur un total de 39, ces sites ou villes-étapes feront leur apparition sur la carte du Tour. Dans l’ordre : Florence, Rimini, Cesenatico, Bologne, Plaisance, Saint-Vulbas, Gevrey-Chambertin, Colombey-les-Deux-Églises, Évaux-les-Bains, Gruissan, Superdévoluy, col de la Couillole.

Le nombre de secteurs de chemins blancs pour un total de 32 km lors de la 9e étape.

Le nombre d’étapes :

• 8 de plaine, 4 accidentées,
• 7 de montagne (avec 4 arrivées en altitude à Saint-Lary-Soulan Pla d’Adet, Plateau de Beille, Isola 2000, col de la Couillole),
• 2 contre la montre et
• 2 journées de repos.

Le nombre de coureurs au départ du Tour,  répartis en 22 équipes de 8 coureurs.

L’altitude de la cime de la Bonette dans les Alpes,  la plus haute route asphaltée de France, qui sera le toit du Tour 2024.

Le dénivelé positif total  du Tour de France 2024.

Au total 2,3 millions d’euros seront attribués et mis en jeu pour les équipes et les coureurs dont 500 000 € au vainqueur du classement général individuel final.

Disputée sur les routes accidentées des Alpes italiennes entre Laives et Borgo Valsugana, la quatrième étape du Tour des Alpes a vu Simon Carr (EF Education-EasyPost) l'emporter, ce jeudi. Parti dans l'échappée matinale, le Britannique s'est imposé en solitaire après avoir couru seul en tête les 42 derniers kilomètres.

Lopez résiste à ses poursuivants

Carr a profité de la chute de ses poursuivants Ben O'Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) et de Chris Harper (Team Jayco AlUla) dans la dernière descente du Palu del Fersina. Lancés à la poursuite du coureur d'EF Education-EasyPost, les deux Australiens sont allés à la faute dans un virage. Ils ont tous les deux été surpris par une plaque d'égout. Lancé à pleine vitesse, Harper a glissé sur plusieurs mètres avant de heurter un lampadaire.

Menacé à plusieurs reprises par Ben O'connor puis Valentin Paret-Peintre, Juan Perdo Lopez a résisté aux attaques de Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale et conserve son maillot vert.

Parti loin de l'arrivée, le cycliste d'EF Education Easy-Post remporte la quatrième étape du Tour des Alpes entre Laives er Borgo Valusagna.

Le Britannique Simon Carr a remporté jeudi à Borgo Valsugana (Italie) la 4e et avant-dernière étape du Tour des Alpes, la plus difficile de l'épreuve, marquée par une lourde chute de l'Australien Chris Harper.

Carr (EF Education) a signé sa deuxième victoire de l'année en venant à bout, en solitaire, d'une étape de 141,3 km comportant deux cols de 1ère catégorie.

Il a devancé les Australiens Michael Storer et Ben O'Connor qui ont pris quelques mètres d'avance dans le final sur les autres favoris, dont l'Espagnol Juan Pedro Lopez, qui reste leader du général, et le Français Romain Bardet. Ce dernier reste 5e au classement général.

Le groupe des favoris qui était revenu à une minute de Carr a été perturbé par la chute de Harper à 30 km de l'arrivée. Le coureur de l'équipe Jayco est parti à la faute dans la longue descente du col de Vetriolo : surpris par une plaque d'égoût, il a buté sur le trottoir et a fini sa chute en heurtant de la tête - casquée - un lampadaire.

Harper est resté sans bouger quelques minutes, avant de se redresser après avoir été rejoint par les secours. Son équipe a annoncé son abandon, sans donner de détails sur son état de santé. O'Connor a lui-aussi chuté au même endroit, mais a repris la course rapidement, avec une éraflure au visage.
