Discover Exeter’s Royal history on free Red Coat Guided Tours

Published: 12 April 2023

Discover Exeter’s Royal history on free Red Coat Guided Tours

In the year of the Coronation, it’s the perfect time to discover Exeter’s Royal history by taking part in a series of special Red Coat Guided Tours.

Beginning on Sunday 23 April, the free tours will explore Royal Visits to the city, from the time of Alfred the Great in the 9 th Century right up until present day. The other dates are Monday 8 May and Saturday 17 June.

Discover the captivating stories of kings and queens who came to Exeter. Not all visits were pleasant and the 90-minute tours will help unravel the mysteries and dramas that took place in Exeter's historic streets.

People will be able to learn about a Viking warrior King of England, the visit of a Princess who would have a major impact on the history of the country, and William of Orange who stayed in Exeter for several days in 1688 whilst on the way to London.

Then there’s the first Tudor King who 'gave' Exeter his sword (the city had to pay for it!), a fleeting visit from a deceased Duke, several visits from Queen Elizabeth 11 and many other Royals.

Tours are suitable for people of all ages, including accompanied children, provided they can walk on generally flat ground for the full 90 minutes, which includes several stops.

Tours start at 11.15am from the Hooker Statue and need to be booked in advance on the Red Coat page of the Corn Exchange website at www.exetercornexchange.co.uk/book-tickets/exeters-red-coat-guided-tours/
