Best of Antarctica: Wildlife Explorer (Ocean Endeavour)

11 days | immerse yourself in the raw beauty of the great white continent.

Intrepid Travel Antarctica smiling travellers and penguins

Enter a spellbinding world of snow and ice as you voyage to Antarctica, a continent that has long captivated explorers. Set sail aboard the comfortable, spacious and well-appointed Ocean Endeavour on an 11-day voyage, discovering unbelievable wildlife and the world’s most remarkable scenery. As you explore this icy wilderness, you’ll not only be accompanied by an expert expedition team, but also by penguins, seals, whales and seabirds, set against a backdrop of towering icebergs, snow-capped peaks, imposing glaciers and ice-choked waters. Adventures like this don’t come along every day – there’s simply nowhere else on earth like Antarctica.

Trip overview

  • Explore an unspoiled wilderness, uninhabited by man, where penguins, seals, whales and seabirds in their abundance are the true rulers.
  • Emerging from winter, the density of wildlife is increasing, and penguin rookeries are at full capacity with penguin chicks beginning to hatch from mid-December.
  • Seal and whale sightings become more frequent as minke, southern right and humpback whales return to Antarctic waters to feed, ensuring extraordinary wildlife viewing opportunities.
  • Enjoy daily Zodiac excursions, onshore landings and take advantage of a range of adventure options during the voyage such as kayaking, camping, photography and snowshoeing.
  • Benefit from a variety of onboard activities including educational lectures on history, geology, and ecology by the expedition team.
  • The Ocean Endeavour is an ice-strengthened ship – large, sturdy and suited to the unpredictable Antarctic waters. Some people may experience seasickness in occasional rough seas however, we do have a doctor on board should you need assistance. Over-the-counter seasickness medication is usually an easy fix.
  • Temperatures in the Antarctic can get very cold, but it also can get surprisingly warm when the sun comes out. We recommend dressing in layers when you journey outside. We’ll provide you with waterproof boots on loan that are sturdy and warm, as well as an inner jacket that is yours to keep. Please see the Essential Trip Information for notes on what to pack.
  • Depending on the weather, you’ll be travelling around in a Zodiac boat quite regularly to explore the area and search for wildlife. It can get cold and wet on the Zodiac, so make sure you dress appropriately and keep your camera safe and dry. A fair level of mobility is needed for wet and dry landings from the boat, as well as on steep terrain, snow and other uneven surfaces. The Ocean Endeavour has a lift, but you’ll need to take the stairs to get to the gangway and some other parts of the ship that the lift does not provide access to.
  • The weather plays a pivotal part in this adventure and, although there’s an itinerary in place, there are no guarantees that you’ll be able to do everything that is planned. A level of flexibility and openness to embracing the unexpected are important in expedition travel, especially in such a remote area like the Antarctic. There are nearly 200 recognised sites in the Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetlands and the places mentioned in the itinerary may need to be changed to other locations – which are just as interesting and beautiful! We may also be confined to the ship during rough weather, but there are plenty on onboard resources and activities. The ship’s library and educational lectures are ideal ways to stay entertained, while the wellness spa, saunas, gym and yoga classes will keep you fresh for when the weather clears.

Welcome to Ushuaia, Argentina, the world’s southernmost city. You will be briefed at your hotel this evening on the journey that lies ahead and the details for tomorrow’s embarkation. If you happen to arrive early there are many ways to entertain yourself at ‘the End of the World’. Check out the Museo Maritimo to brush up on the region’s history or take a stroll down Avenida San Martin if you're after any last-minute essentials before departing for Antarctica. Enjoy a traditional meal at a local restaurant and sample some of Argentina's famous red wine.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

An arrival transfer from the airport on Day 1 is included in your voyage fare. Full details will be sent with your final joining instructions.

This afternoon you will board the Ocean Endeavour and your epic adventure south begins. Take some time to settle into your cabin as you begin cruising the stunning Beagle Channel, named after the famed vessel 'The Beagle' that facilitated some of Charles Darwin's most significant voyages. The channel transects the Tierra del Fuego archipelago in the extreme south of South America, and as the Ocean Endeavour pulls away from the port, there’s always an air of anticipation. Wave goodbye to Argentina and know that the next time you see land, you will be gazing upon the White Continent of Antarctica.

  • Expedition Cruise Ship (1 night)
  • Welcome Briefing

The infamous Drake Passage, named after the famous English explorer Sir Francis Drake, separates the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula from the southernmost tip of South America. It is often rough and turbulent, but sometimes as calm as a lake. It is unpredictable, so be prepared! The next two days at sea offer time to enjoy the fabulous onboard facilities. Maybe join a yoga class, or attend a presentation or two given by your expedition team to prepare you for what lies ahead, from the geology of Antarctica to the history, wildlife and even the ice!

Sailing towards Antarctica, the temperature falls as you cross the Antarctic Convergence and enter the waters of the Antarctic Ocean. The Antarctic Convergence is marked by an increased number of seabirds, whales and other species that are attracted by the nutrient-rich waters pushed to the surface by the colder waters of the polar region flowing north and meeting the warmer equatorial waters flowing south.

Head out on one of the spacious outer decks to look out for the mighty albatrosses that fly overhead. Scan the waters for breaching whales and icebergs or gaze out from the panoramic windows of the Ocean Endeavour's observation deck. Keep on the lookout for the first sighting of land early evening on day four – heralding your arrival to the White Continent!

  • Expedition Cruise Ship (2 nights)
  • Breakfast (2)
  • Citizen Science Program
  • Daily Briefings and Recap
  • Onboard Lecture Program
  • Yoga and Meditation Classes - Free
  • Onboard Spa treatments (various prices apply) starting from - USD95
  • Photography Program - USD1099
  • Onboard Gym and Sauna - Free

Photography, Program, has limited spaces available and must be prebooked via your booking agent prior to travel.

You will spend the next four incredible days exploring the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula, a region that has captivated explorers for centuries and now enthrals travellers.

Explore the region by Zodiac, cruising among the magnificently sculpted icebergs and making shore landings where you’ll mingle with penguins, climb to vantage points to absorb the spectacular panoramic views, and maybe visit a scientific or historic base. There may even be opportunities to day-paddle, snowshoe and learn more about photography with your talented expedition photographer capturing the moments as they unfold.

Antarctica will enchant you with its incredible scenery, from imposing glaciers to towering snow-capped peaks, vast icebergs and ice strewn channels. Not to mention the wildlife – from extensive colonies of chinstrap, gentoo and Adelie penguins, to crabeater, Weddell, fur and elephant seals and a plethora of fascinating birds. Look and listen for the mighty crack of a glacier calving. Maybe you will be one of the brave few to take a polar plunge into the icy Antarctic waters! Every day brings a new experience and new landing sites to explore.

As you cruise from one landing site to the next, enjoy the continued lecture program and take in the scenery from the outer decks of the Ocean Endeavour. Make the most of the Ocean Endeavour's wellness facilities, from the relaxing spa and saunas to the saltwater pool and gym.

An average day on board begins with a wake-up call from your expedition leader around 7 am, giving you time to prepare for the day before joining your fellow expeditioners for breakfast in the Polaris restaurant. You will usually have two excursions per day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, with a delicious lunch served on the Ocean Endeavour in between excursions.

  • Expedition Cruise Ship (4 nights)
  • Breakfast (4)
  • Guided walking Excursions
  • Zodiac Excursion/Cruising
  • Stand Up Paddleboarding - USD299
  • Kayaking Program - USD1099
  • Polar Plunge - Free
  • Day Paddle - USD299
  • Camping - USD399
  • Snowshoeing - USD150

Optional activities such as Stand-Up Paddle boarding, Kayaking, Day Paddle, Camping and Snowshoeing are very dependent on weather and sea ice conditions. Your experienced expedition team will provide regular updates on which days they are available throughout your voyage.

Kayaking, Photography Program, Day Paddle, Stand Up Paddleboarding and Camping have limited spaces available and must be prebooked via your booking agent prior to travel. Snowshoeing must be booked onboard via your expedition team.

Leave the Antarctic Peninsula behind as you set sail across the Drake Passage, enjoying some final lectures and presentations from your expedition team. Look out for wildlife from the observation lounge, outer decks, or the Ocean Endeavour's bridge as you head north across the Antarctic Convergence. Having crossed the Drake Passage once more, enter the calm and tranquil waters of the Beagle Channel as you enjoy a final dinner and approach your home port of Ushuaia.

Your Antarctic adventure draws to a close as you disembark the Ocean Endeavour following breakfast. Farewell your fellow guests and your expedition team and join a transfer to Ushuaia airport for your onward journey today. Or perhaps extend your stay to spend some more time exploring this incredible part of the world.

On the day you disembark in Ushuaia, we recommend scheduling your flights for departure after 12 noon to allow for any potential delays due to weather conditions.

On this day, we've got your transfers covered! Choose between a morning transfer from the port to Ushuaia airport for your onward flight or a morning transfer from the port to Ushuaia downtown. Enjoy complimentary luggage storage for the day. If you plan to head to the airport at a later time or to your Ushuaia accommodation, it's entirely up to you and at your own expense.

We wanted to leave this review for Adam, our tour guide and Florin, our bus driver. They were absolutely amazing on our tour. We felt very fortunate to have them right from the moment the tour started. Adam is kind, knowledgeable and made us feel safe every step of the way. This was our very first overseas trip and we came from Australia. For us, it was a big moment in our life. We felt very grateful to be in the hands of Adam and Florin. Adam ran the tour with expertise and fun. He had everything organised, our itinerary for each day was set out and everything was explained very well. We have met life long friends, saw so many amazing places, ate some delicious food and overall had the most wonderful time. Loved every part of our experience. Thank you so much Adam.

Europe Jewel Tour

This is my first tour experience and I am in no position to compare, but our team Explore Together 23 was exceptional, we easily blended together as one big family, caring for each other where needed. i had a motto of “making our dreams bigger than our memories “ to which I shared with some of our team members. Matt is a historian in his own right, giving us lectures, without notes; on the history of the Country we are about to enter into. His timing on his series was perfectly timed that sets the tone of excitement for us. Another thing worth mentioning is his professionalism and efficiency in dealing with issues that could affect our schedule. But he has also to strike the balance between the time involved in dealing with the issue and the challenge presented to arived at resolving the issue at hand. Pascal, on the other hand; is a Star, very efficient and reliable in his driving skills that puts every body at ease. His music added life to the team, keeping them entertained during the long haul. He is competent in following impromptu directions from our local tour guide, this happened because there was huge demonstrations at Budapest that time that it was required of us to changed routes. He can easily manoeuvre sharp bends and tight spots. Matt and Pascal had a great teamwork. I am convinced they can easily get a 5 ratings each.

The entire tour exceeded our expectations and Karina MERKEL our Expat tour guide was exceptional. Her enthusiasm, positive nature and willingness to go above and beyond to deliver a first class tour for everyone shone through. Mark the driver was very competent and safe making the coach travel very enjoyable and of course scenic as we traversed 7000 km of diverse countryside. Our tour group whilst diverse in age, nationality and background bonded so well and we made so many firm friendships and all enhanced the fun of the tour. Value for money was perfect we could not have done, experienced and seen so much in this space of time without being on a tour of this nature. You do need to be physically and mentally fit and be ready for a full on itinerary but there is space for doing your own thing at your own pace on the double up night stays. We would certainly do a similar trip again, we loved it.

Balkan Explorer Tour

Balkan Explorer

Tour Leader: Filip Filip is an outstanding tour guide and a really great guy. Over our 16 day tour, I found him to be kind, funny, tremendously helpful, and incredibly knowledgeable. Coming into this tour, I knew very little about the Balkans beyond the general idea that bad things had happened there in the 90's. I learned a tremendous amount from Filip about the rich and complex history, culture, and geopolitics of the region. His knowledge is really something, and goes far beyond the sort of "dates and factoids" that I came into the tour expecting, and his delivery is funny, engaging, and shows a deep level of understanding. Filip was always there for everyone on the tour, be it a helping hand getting off the bus, tracking down cold medication (on a national holiday when every single pharmacy in the entire country was closed), or running back to the hotel to sort out a passengers luggage issue. To say nothing of his ability to wrangle and organize 48 different people through 70+ stops in 10 different countries over 16 days without any incidents, which in-and-of-itself is quite a feat. He was kind, courteous, and kept everything running smoothly. On a personal note, beyond his duties as the tour leader, my wife and I immensely enjoyed getting to know Filip, he already feels very much like an old friend. TLDR - Filip is an amazing tour guide, a really cool guy, and I hope to travel with him again. Driver: Kleanthis Kleanthis is a man of few words, but the interactions I did have with him were warm and genuine. Mostly, I think, he was focused on getting us where we were going safely and on time, which was quit an accomplishment. I'd say about half of the driving on the trip took place on narrow one and two lane roads that switchback high up into the mountains, with nothing but a low guardrail the bus and sheer drop offs, and some of the countries visited on this tour (heres looking at you Albania) seem to have little to no rules governing traffic. Kleanthis navigated all of those streets with a skilled ease that made for a very smooth journey. Tour: Balkan Explorer by Expat Explorer This was my first tour with Expat, and it was an amazing look at one of the grungier sides of the European continent, which is exactly what I was looking for. I feel like in this day and age so many places have become over-touristed, to the point where they are Disneyland versions of themselves. On this tour we got to visit places that that have been inhabited for thousands of years, cities built on history, we ate at restaurants among Greek, Roman, and Ottoman ruins, sipped drinks on sidewalks surrounded by locals. These places had the historicity of museums, but (for the most part) haven't yet become over-touristed and lost the feeling of being places where real people live. That isn't to say that there aren't other tourists, cities like Budapest and Dubrovnik are very popular destinations, but my wife and i really fell in love with some of the off-the-beaten track places we visited on the tour. I couldn't help but read some of the negative reviews on this site, and it seems like a lot of people feel this tour is rushed. You certainly do cover a lot of ground, there are long hours of driving and a fair amount of walking to do, but I feel like that's a good thing. On a tour like this, you get to experience a lot of different places and cultures in a fairly short amount of time, giving you a preview of places you might want to return to. My wife and I absolutely fell in love with the small city of Ohrid in North Macedonia, and very much look forward to visiting there again for a longer stay. Overall, I'd say if you're looking for a relaxed, sterilized, and/or handicap accessible vacation this probably isn't the tour for you, but if you want to experience a really cool part of the world, I'd highly recommend it.

Highlights of Southern Italy and Sicily Tour

Highlights of Southern Italy and Sicily

It was a busy Itinerary as we hoped. We got to see a lot. Antonio was an incredible person and driver. We felt so safe in his hands. Give the man a raise. Accommodations, two were not very pleasant, and should probably not be included in the future tours. 1) Reginella....The showers were so small and they did not drain so you were standing in muck and had to clean your feet after. The staff was grouchy. 2) Athenaeum in Palermo....We had to be switched to three different rooms. The first had occupants in it. The second, smelled like a perfume bottle was spilled in it (I had requested low scents and no perfumy cleaning products) It had 4 single beds in it that felt like sinking cots. The third was OK because it probably had not been used in a while. Their cleaning products in the halls, were so intensely perfumy that I had to wear a mask when leaving my room. The lobby was not a place to hang out in. It was not the best hotel at all. The hotel Albatros was absolute heaven in every respect and it was restorative to stay in it for as long as we did. We all wanted to stay there! The Meals....Too much pasta and pork. I was given alternatives to the pork, but it seems the Italians do not know how to cook chicken properly. Needed more fish on the menu. How about Lamb? don't they eat it? As for beef, forget it! What they call beef tastes like venison and it is horrible. Our guides were awsome! Marisol was great, Pascuale was incredible fun, the pregnant lady at the Trully tour was great, So was the fellow who gave us the tour of the Valley of the Temples; every one of them. I hope you pay them well and treat them great! We appreciate that for the money we paid, we got every penny and more. On a personal note: I have a heavy allergy to Perfumes. I took a chance that my fellow co-tourers would appreciate the fact and help me out. It did not happen. I requested, I did not push, and I managed to make it through. My body finally had enough on the last day and I suffered on the plane ride as well as for the last few days upon arriving home. I don't think any one understands what it means to be allergic to scented products. It is a body's refusal to breathe in particles composed of bad chemistry. Some chemicals do not mix, and are basically toxic, like ammonia and Clorox. Now days in order to make money, many manufacturers are not paying attention to the truth of it and bad combinations are abundant. At Kaiser Hospitals in California, if you show up to an appointment wearing scents of any kind, including detergent on your clothe, they re-book your appointment. It is a medically recognize condition. I thought people would be more accepting, after all, the only reason to wear perfume started in the middle ages when people did not bathe often, but they did not care. So, nothing wrong with the tour, and people had a right to do what they wanted to, I just wish strangers were kinder and the general population was better instructed, because in a few months or years, they will also suffer what I am suffering now. It is inevitable that people will short out. The body is not able to cope and evolve fast enough to keep up with the fast growing toxic levels and they will develop all kind of illnesses and not even know where they are coming from. So, Thank you for a wonderful tour. Italy is fantastic and the people warm and generous. I hope my comments help you better what little needs to be bettered. Marta and David May

Eastern Highlights tour was good overall. Hotels ranged from reasonably good to average as did hotel locations. Driver Mike seemed to really know his stuff. Guide Peter kept us well informed but perhaps should carry a flag or some identifying marker when leading the group through large crowds.

I would recommend this tour. Our tour guide was wonderful. Our coach driver was wonderful. Wish we had more time at some of our stops but overall it was great.
This was a very fast paced highlight tour of Europe. This is a good sampler to see what is worth seeing on an extended trip. The guide and driver were excellent, and the tour was well thought out. It was a lot of time spent on the bus, but that was a good way to see what the countries really look like.

This Small but Mighty Thunderbolt 4 Hub Is Perfect for Travel

While it only has a single USB-A port, the hub is a nice option for travel and smaller desks.

Key Takeaways

  • Satechi Thunderbolt 4 Slim Hub Pro has 4 Thunderbolt 4 ports and 1 USB 3.2 Gen 2 with 10 Gbps data transfer.
  • The hub is compatible with Mac, Windows, and iPads, providing 90W upstream power and 15W downstream for charging.
  • The minimalist design, suitable for small desk spaces, efficiently dissipates heat.

Especially if you’re a Mac user, additional Thunderbolt ports can be used in various ways, like for external monitors and storage. And if you’re looking for a cost-effective option that looks great and won’t take up a lot of space on your desk, the Satechi Thunderbolt 4 Slim Hub Pro is a nice choice.

Satechi Thunderbolt 4 Slim Hub Pro

The Thunderbolt 4 Slim Hub Pro can upgrade your setup without breaking the bank or taking up tons of room on your desk. Along with an upstream Thunderbolt 4 that can provide 90W of power delivery to your laptop or desktop, there are three additional Thunderbolt 4 ports with 15W of downstream power for other devices like a monitor. Additionally, there is a USB 3.2 Gen 2 with up to 10 Gbps data transfer. The hub can be used with both compatible Macs and Windows devices.

  • Compatible with Mac, Windows, iPads
  • Three downstream Thunderbolt 4 ports
  • Backwards compatible with Thunderbolt 3
  • Lower price compared to similiar options
  • Won't take up tons of room on your desk
  • Lack of additional USB-A or HDMI port.
  • Metal shell could be prone to scratching if used while traveling

Unboxing and Setup is Easy

Getting started with the Satechi Thunderbolt 4 Slim Hub Pro takes just a few minutes. After unboxing the hub itself, you’ll need to grab the power cords. Since this is a powered unit, the power equipment is large and extensive and actually takes up more room than the hub itself.

Attach the power cord to the plug on the hub and then into the included power brick. The power brick has the actual plug. I had to find a specific place in my desk’s cord management system to place the brick because it was so large—it reminds me of an old-school PC laptop power supply. Though it’s quite large, there is good news. The 150W power supply can output up to 96W of power to the host device, perfect for Mac laptops like the current-generation 14-inch MacBook Pro.

Satechi also includes an almost 3-foot Thunderbolt 4 cable that you can attach directly into your machine. While Thunderbolt hubs like this are mostly favored by Mac fans, you can also use it with a number of modern iPads and some Windows machines. I tested the hub mostly with my 2021 14-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro chip.

Just to note, even though it is a Thunderbolt 4 hub, it’s backwards compatible with Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C.

A Beautiful Design That Compliments Your Mac

I usually don’t worry about how something looks on my desk, but the Satechi Thunderbolt 4 Slim Hub Pro just looks great. The top, bottom, and sides are covered with a space gray aluminum that closely matches the same color of various Macs.

On the bottom are four, non-skid feet to help prevent the hub from sliding around your desk with just a bit of movement. Both of the longest sides, where the ports are located, are covered with a similar black material. Sloping down from the top are chamfered sides.

Overall, the hub is 12.2 inches long, 2.91 inches long, and just 0.71 inches deep. It weighs 8.5 ounces. So if you can find a spot for the power cord, the hub won’t take up tons of space on a desk. Since I don’t have a dedicated office space at my home, my desk is very small and tucked into the side of a living area, so was really nice to use the Satechi hub without having to rearrange and remove items from my desk.

The hub is even small enough that it shouldn’t be a huge burden to take with you while traveling, with one caveat. Make sure to keep any sharp items away from the aluminum as I suspect it might easily scratch if it rubs up against a set of keys or something else sharp.

Powerful Thunderbolt Ports

On the front of the dock is the upstream Thunderbolt 4 port that can provide up to that 96W of power along with a maximum of 40Gbps of data.

Next to it is the USB 3.2 Gen 2 port provides a maximum of 10 Gbps. It’s also backwards compatible with older USB-A devices. I would have liked to have seen the port be moved a bit further from the upstream Thunderbolt 4 connector. When trying out a wide variety of different devices, some of my chunkier USB cords and a larger USB thumb drive were a very tight fit because of the port’s proximity to each other.

Finally, on the far right is a power button that turns green to let you know the hub is on and active.

On the other side of the hub is the power outlet for the brick and three downstream Thunderbolt 4 plugs that can provide up to 15W of power each. That should be enough to fast charge your iPhone with MagSafe connector.

All of the downstream connectors can also be used for video output. On the Mac, you can use dual 4K displays at 60Hz or a single 6K display at 60Hz. Windows is a bit better with dual 4K displays at 60Hz or a single 8K display at 60Hz.

Only one external display is supported on a Mac with the base-level M1/M2/M3 processor. That’s a disappointment, as one of the best use-cases for a hub like this is for a dual-monitor setup.

Works Well and Doesn’t Heat Up

I’ve used the Satechi Thunderbolt 4 Slim Hub Pro for around two weeks with my MacBook setup and haven’t experienced any issues. I used the hub for a wide variety of tasks like device charging, using a variety of peripherals like printers and hard drives, and with my main 38-inch Dell 4K display.

The connection to my display worked well without any flickering or other issues sometimes seen with Thunderbolt hubs. I used the hub to charge my MacBook Pro, and it charged just as fast as with Apple’s 96W adapter.

Another issue, sometimes found on Thunderbolt hubs, is that they can become warm or even hot to the touch when charging devices or during a large transfer. I previously used an older Thunderbolt 3 hub that became so hot, I was afraid my hand might have been slightly burned.

But that’s not the case with Satechi’s option. It’s designed to dissipate and regulate heat and operate between 86 and 122-degrees Fahrenheit during use. At least in my testing, the hub got mildly warm at most, nothing near the top of its range.

My only other small issue after testing, is that I had a bit of a hard time orienting the hub correctly because the usable Thunderbolt plugs were on the back of the dock. I would have loved to have seen the power cable plug placed with the single upstream and USB 3.2 port instead. That would make it easier to access the plugs without having to deal with the power cord snaking on my desk.

Should You Buy the Satechi Thunderbolt 4 Slim Hub Pro?

If you’re looking for a traditional hub with tons of legacy ports, a SD card slot, and HDMI, the Satechi Thunderbolt 4 Slim Hub Pro definitely isn’t for you. With only a single USB-A port, you’ll have enough room for a single device like a keyboard, mouse, or hard drive. Most likely, you’ll need to spend a bit more for something like a more powerful, and expensive, docking station.

But if you’d like a modern hub with tons of Thunderbolt 4 ports, and power to charge up pretty much any laptop and other devices, the Satechi is a nice option that doesn't cost tons. It looks great on any desk, and it is small enough to pack up for travel easily. Just make sure to find a secure place for it in your travel bag so the beautiful exterior doesn’t get scratched.
