Stevie Nicks says Fleetwood Mac won’t tour again after death of Christine McVie

Singer says ‘we really can’t go any further with this – there’s no reason to’ when asked about future of band

Stevie Nicks has said Fleetwood Mac will not tour again after the death of Christine McVie in November 2022.

In an interview with Vulture , she referred to the band’s 2018 tour, An Evening With Fleetwood Mac. “We had a really great time and it was a huge tour. That was there in the realm of possibility. But when Christine died, I felt like you can’t replace her. You just can’t. Without her, what is it?” Nicks said.

“Who am I going to look over to on the right and have them not be there behind that Hammond organ? When she died, I figured we really can’t go any further with this. There’s no reason to.”

Mick Fleetwood has previously suggested that the band could be finished, saying in February: “I truly think the line in the sand has been drawn with the loss of Chris. I’d say we’re done, but then we’ve all said that before.”

Announcing the An Evening With Fleetwood Mac tour, McVie had said it could be the band’s last: “The 2018 tour is supposed to be a farewell tour, but you take farewell tours one at a time. Somehow we always come together, this unit.” She had stopped touring with the group in 1998 due to developing a phobia of flying, but rejoined in 2013.

She died in 2022 after a short illness. Nicks paid tribute at the time, writing that McVie reminded audiences “that love is all around us to reach for and touch in this precious life … Part of my heart has flown away today.”

Continuing her reminiscence of McVie with Vulture, Nicks said: “She was like my soul mate, my musical soul mate, and my best friend that I spent more time with than any of my other best friends outside of Fleetwood Mac. Christine was my best friend. When I think about Taylor Swift’s song You’re on Your Own, Kid and the line ‘you always have been,’ it was like, that was Christine and I. We were on our own in that band. We always were. We protected each other.”

Nicks is on a solo tour of the US, including a number of dates alongside Billy Joel billed as Two Icons, One Night; her tour was recently extended into 2024. In July, she released a 16 LP box set of her studio albums alongside newly released rarities.

This week, she has also unveiled a collaboration with Mattel on a Barbie doll made in her likeness, wearing the floating black dress she is pictured in on the cover of Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours. “When I look at her, I see my 27-year-old self,” she said in a statement. “What we have been through since 1975 – the battles we have fought, the lessons we have learned together. I am her and she is me. She absolutely has my heart.”

Next Fleetwood Mac tour could feature 'everyone who's ever played' in the band, says Mick Fleetwood

The 73-year-old drummer says it is his "English pipe dream" that "everyone who's ever played in Fleetwood Mac would be welcome".

Mick Fleetwood has revealed he hopes every past and current member of Fleetwood Mac will perform together the next time the band tour, following the death of co-founder Peter Green.

The 73-year-old drummer said it is his "English pipe dream" that "everyone who's ever played in Fleetwood Mac would be welcome" when the rock group take to the stage again.

Green, who formed Fleetwood Mac with Fleetwood in 1967, died in July aged 73 .

The group's last tour in 2018 did not feature guitarist Lindsey Buckingham who reportedly claimed his ex-partner, singer Stevie Nicks, had given the band "an ultimatum" and forced them to choose between him or her.

But speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Fleetwood said: "I don't look at it like that. Stevie was very unhappy. It was not an ultimatum - it was about taking a breath.

"Two people have walked away from each other, like Liz Taylor and Richard Burton. I understand both people. Lindsey would say: 'You're piggy in the middle, Mick.'"

Fleetwood has been an ever-present member of Fleetwood Mac, along with John McVie who joined shortly after the band was formed.

Green left the group in 1970 as he struggled with mental health problems, before they became one of the biggest-selling acts in rock with a different line-up having switched from blues to pop.

Buckingham quit the band in 1987 and Nicks left four years later, though both returned in 1997. Soon after, singer Christine McVie retired and then rejoined in 2014.

The band's last tour in 2018 saw Buckingham replaced by Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers' Mike Campbell and Crowded House's Neil Finn on guitars.

Asked who will be in Fleetwood Mac the next time the band tours, Fleetwood told the LA Times: "I hope the whole f****** lot of them! I'm not done. And if I can get John McVie off his boat, he's not done either!

"My English pipe dream, sitting on top of a mushroom, would be that everyone who's ever played in Fleetwood Mac would be welcome. That's what would drive me, because this is all about a collective."

An all-star tribute concert honouring Green and the early years of Fleetwood Mac took place at the London Palladium in February last year.

It will be streamed online for the first time next month.

Fleetwood Mac fired Lindsey Buckingham. So why won’t he let them go?

This is the album that started all the trouble.

“Lindsey Buckingham ,” the singer-guitarist’s seventh solo venture, was finished nearly four years ago. Upon completing the 10-song collection, he asked his bandmates in Fleetwood Mac if they’d be willing to slightly delay an upcoming tour so he could promote his new music. He’d made a similar request back in 2006 and was granted two years to tour behind back-to-back solo efforts. For his new album, he only wanted three months.

But Fleetwood Mac’s 2018 tour dates had already been sketched out. Still, Buckingham says, the majority of the group — drummer Mick Fleetwood, keyboardist-vocalist Christine McVie and bassist John McVie — seemed flexible. Stevie Nicks, the band’s primary lead singer and singular superstar, however, would not budge.

The tension between Buckingham and Nicks, who were an infamously volatile couple during Fleetwood Mac’s 1970s peak, only grew from there. In January 2018, when the group walked onstage to receive their MusiCares Person of the Year award, “Rhiannon” — a song written by Nicks — was playing, which Buckingham complained about. Then Nicks, who accepted the prize on behalf of the band, felt that Buckingham was mocking her for her lengthy speech.

“Ironically,” Buckingham says, “nothing went down that night that was [as contentious] as the stuff we’d been through for 43 years.” But within a week, he was fired from Fleetwood Mac.

It was a seismic shift in Buckingham’s life — one he is still struggling to accept today, at age 71. As it would turn out, it was only the first in a series of upheavals. Following his departure, Buckingham sued Fleetwood Mac for lost wages, including the $12 million to $14 million he claimed he would have made in just two months on that 2018 tour.

After the lawsuit was settled in December of that year, he planned to turn his attention back to releasing his solo music. But a couple of months later, in February 2019, he suffered a heart attack and had to undergo triple bypass surgery. During the process, the insertion of a breathing tube damaged his vocal cords, leaving him questioning whether he’d ever be able to sing again.

He spent much of the COVID-19 pandemic focusing on his recovery. Then in June, his wife of 21 years filed for divorce.

“I’ll tell you what: Between the Fleetwood Mac stuff and the heart attack, it’s all been humbling,” Buckingham says now. “I’ve never suffered from a lack of confidence, and sometimes could get carried away with that in the process of leading the band. But everything has pulled me in a little bit. I’m not as aggressive a person as I was before, which is probably not a bad thing. It made me look around more — and become less self-involved, hopefully.”

Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham’s rocky relationship: A timeline of love and war

Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham were friends, then lovers, then Fleetwood Mac bandmates. With the spotlight on him this week, we revisit their drama.

Sept. 10, 2021

And yet despite this assertion, Buckingham is quick to make incendiary comments about his former bandmates and associates. Sitting in the living room of his Brentwood home, he is uninhibited in conversation — his honesty about his circumstances at turns refreshing and disconcerting. While he’d like to be asked back to the band, he’s well aware that it’s probably a pipe dream unless Nicks comes around. “I realize I don’t have a lot of control over that — any control over that.”

And then there’s his new music, which is finally coming out on Sept. 17, led by the single “ Scream .” He’s proud of the self-titled album, even though he knows that perhaps “one in 10 who pay attention to Fleetwood Mac will pay attention” to it. But part of the reason he’s so open about his tumultuous past few years, he says, is because he knows that drama helps fans invest in his music.

“That was part of the appeal of ‘Rumours,’” he says, referring to the 1977 Fleetwood Mac album that was created while the band members were in the midst of affairs, addictions and breakups. “I think there’s a little element of that out there right now. It’s sort of humanizing. The fact that I got [this album] out at all finally is sort of a nice thing for people to think, ‘Oh, cool, he’s still doing it.’”

Buckingham has spent the last month rehearsing for a 30-date U.S. tour, which kicked off Tuesday and will stop at downtown’s Theatre at Ace Hotel in December. On this day in August, he says he hasn’t played enough guitar yet for his finger calluses to return, though he still has three weeks left of prep time at a warehouse space in Burbank. At night, he returns to the Brentwood mansion that his wife, interior designer Kristen Buckingham, served as the architect on.

She isn’t staying here at the moment — she’s a mile away in a rented home in Mandeville Canyon. Their three children have mostly been crashing here during the pandemic: His 22-year-old son, William Gregory, is in the midst of an online internship at the Wasserman Agency, his 21-year-old daughter, Leelee, and her boyfriend have no air conditioning at their Westwood apartment; and his youngest, 17-year-old Stella, is still in high school.

The COVID-19 shutdown exacerbated Buckingham’s marital issues, he says, and at first his wife told him she just needed a “spatial break.” He was surprised when she filed divorce papers and is still hopeful that they’ll be able to work things out.

The moonlight confessions of Stevie Nicks

On the eve of the release of a solo concert film, Fleetwood Mac star Stevie Nicks opens up on Lindsey Buckingham’s exit and looking for love in her 70s.

Sept. 30, 2020

Which is, deep down, the same way he feels about Fleetwood Mac.

When Nicks gave the band an ultimatum — it’s either him or me is the way Buckingham says it went down — he was disappointed that no one stood up for him.

“It would be like a scenario where Mick Jagger says, ‘Either Keith [Richards] goes or I go,’” he says. “No, neither one of you can go. But I guess the singer has to stay. The figurehead has to stay.”

Nicks is, undeniably, the star attraction in Fleetwood Mac — and her draw has only increased in recent years as she’s cemented herself further in the pop culture firmament. Her witchy style has become a fashion reference for Free People-loving millennials, she occasionally drops in on Harry Styles tours to duet on “Landslide” and, before the Delta variant hit, she was set to headline major festivals like BottleRock Napa Valley and Austin City Limits.

While Fleetwood Mac fans were certainly dismayed when Buckingham was axed — he was replaced for the 2018/2019 tour by Crowded House’s Neil Finn and Mike Campbell of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers — they still showed up in record numbers to fill arenas and sing along to the band’s classic songbook, including the Buckingham-penned “Go Your Own Way,” “Second Hand News” and “Monday Morning.”

Fleetwood Mac hold an award in 1978.

Of course, this isn’t the first time the band has gone through personnel changes. In 1987, Buckingham left Fleetwood Mac of his own accord for a decade; Christine McVie was gone from 1998 to 2014; Nicks was largely absent in the early ‘90s. And plenty of Baby Boomer favorites have proved popular without their iconic members: The Eagles minus Glenn Frey, Journey absent Steve Perry, and, coming soon, the Rolling Stones without their late drummer, Charlie Watts.

Buckingham says that when the band and their manager, music mogul Irving Azoff, dismissed him, they were less concerned with Fleetwood Mac’s legacy, or with its fans, than they were with appeasing Nicks and continuing to cash the million-dollar-plus paychecks from a single arena or stadium gig.

Mick Fleetwood has “never quite gotten to the point where he’s financially stable all the time,” Buckingham says of the band’s namesake. “He’s been married and divorced many times. He’s just not smart with his money.”

The same theory applies to Christine McVie, whom Buckingham says sent him an email after his firing that read: “I’m really sorry that I didn’t stand up for you, but I just bought a house.” (Both she and Fleetwood declined to comment for this article.)

‘He’s our Satan’: Mega music manager Irving Azoff, still feared, still fighting

The famously pugnacious music manager and live entertainment tycoon will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Saturday.

Nov. 5, 2020

In negotiations with the group, Buckingham posits, Azoff “threw me under the bus.”

“Irving doesn’t need the money, but he’s still driven by the money,” says the guitarist, who also used to be managed by Azoff as a solo act.

“I have historically declined comment on artists, but in the case of Lindsey Buckingham, I will make an exception,” Azoff says in a statement to The Times. “In speaking with Stevie, her account of events are factual and truthful. While I understand it’s challenging for Lindsey to accept his own role in these matters and far easier to blame a manager, the fact remains that his actions alone are responsible for what transpired.

“Frankly,” Azoff continues, “if I can be accused of anything it’s perhaps holding things together longer than I should have. After 2018 when Fleetwood Mac evolved with their new lineup, my continued work with the band was due entirely to the fact I’ve been aligned with Stevie Nicks in thought and purpose from the earliest of days.

“While financial gain was not a motivator for me,” Azoff adds in reply to Buckingham’s comment, “it was a delightful bonus that the band scored their highest grossing tour ever without Lindsey.”

A man rocks out on a guitar onstage

Buckingham’s issues with Nicks , meanwhile, center on far more than a paycheck. At the root of it all, he says, is the fact that he and his onetime lover, who joined the band as a couple in 1975, never got closure when their relationship came to its rocky conclusion. (Nicks had a short-lived affair with Fleetwood in 1977.) Because they had to focus on “Rumours,” the exes compartmentalized their emotions and never took the necessary physical space to get over one another.

So when his mind returns to his exit from the band, he comes to the same conclusion: Nicks wanted to “cut herself loose” from having to compete with him onstage after so many years. “I think she saw the possibility of remaking the band more in the Stevie Nicks vein,” he continues. “More mellow and kind of down, giving her more chances to do the kind of talking she does onstage.”

Nicks tells a different story. Through her publicist, she describes Buckingham’s recollection of the 2018 events as “revisionist history.”

“His version of events is factually inaccurate and while I’ve never spoken publicly on the matter, certainly it feels the time has come to shine a light on the truth,” Nicks says. “To be exceedingly clear, I did not have him fired, I did not ask for him to be fired, I did not demand he be fired. Frankly, I fired myself. I proactively removed myself from the band and a situation I considered to be toxic to my wellbeing. I was done. If the band went on without me, so be it.

“And after many lengthy group discussions, Fleetwood Mac, a band whose legacy is rooted in evolution and change, found a new path forward with two hugely talented new members.”

Indeed, Nicks has been reluctant to speak about the 2018 split. In an interview with The Times last year, she would only say that it was “a long time coming” and that being around Buckingham made her feel sad — “like a dying flower all the time.”

“That wasn’t caused by me,” Buckingham says, defending himself. “You could do a whole analysis on Stevie at this point in her life and what she’s allowed to happen and what she’s allowed to slip away from her. Her creativity, at least for a while it seemed like she wasn’t in touch with that. Same with the level of energy she once had onstage. I think that was hard for her, seeing me jump around in an age-inappropriate way. Also, she’s lonely. She’s alone. She has the people who work for her, and I’m sure she has friends, but you know.”

When Buckingham is reminded that Nicks has repeatedly asserted she chose to focus on her career over marriage or children, he does not back down. “Well, maybe she never did [want that], but it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t make her feel alone as a result.”

Told of Buckingham’s comments, Nicks now reiterates that though she was “thrilled for Lindsey when he had children,” she “wasn’t interested in making those same life choices.”

“Those are my decisions that I get to make for myself. I’m proud of the life choices I’ve made and it seems a shame for him to pass judgment on anyone who makes a choice to live their life on their own terms.”

A woman, left, in a flowy red dress holding a microphone and a man playing a guitar onstage

Buckingham hasn’t seen any of the new group’s shows but hears they’re “on the edge of being a cover band” because they’re playing “a range of material lacking a center.” But even when he was in Fleetwood Mac, Buckingham wasn’t always on board with their creative direction.

Following the dazzling success of “Rumours,” Buckingham steered the band in a starkly different sonic direction on 1979’s double album “Tusk.” While “Tusk” is now revered, at the time is was viewed as too esoteric, only selling about a fourth of the albums that “Rumours” did.

“Mick came to me a year later, in the wake of it not being nearly as mega as ‘Rumours,’ and said, ‘Well, we’re not gonna do that again,’” Buckingham recalls. “So maybe I did feel like I had something to prove at that point. I knew I couldn’t give up that part of my palette. The audience that has the ears for your music, they’re gonna find it.”

Cameron Crowe, who began interviewing Buckingham in the ‘70s for Rolling Stone and since cast him on his Showtime series “Roadies,” is one of those fans.

“Lindsey has been vindicated over time for all the angst that went into ‘Tusk,’” says the filmmaker. “He created something that stands the test of time. When Fleetwood Mac fans talk about their favorite stuff, they almost always go to ‘Tusk.’”

fleetwood mac tour news

Buckingham can still quote a review of his 2006 album “Under the Skin” that described him as a “visionary” — although “nobody knew it.”

“Maybe that’s been a bit of a problem — feeling unseen,” he admits. His highest-charting solo single to date was 1981’s “ Trouble ,” which reached No. 9 on Billboard’s Hot 100, and he’s scored modest solo hits with “ Holiday Road ” (best known as the theme from “National Lampoon’s Vacation”) and “ Go Insane .”

Buckingham plays all the instruments on his new album, which he crafted in a studio at his last Brentwood home — he’s since downsized to his current house, further down the same avenue — on a 48-track reel-to-reel, using a razor blade to cut two-track tape.

He’s written two new songs since his heart attack. He says his voice has mostly returned to normal, though he’s had to lower the key of a few songs he’ll be performing on his upcoming tour. Sometimes he gets lightheaded when he stands up too quickly, “but it’s nothing that isn’t manageable.”

He did hear from Nicks after his bypass, and he’s emailed and texted her a few times since, though he says she doesn’t usually respond.

“She’s very guarded and protective of her own world, and I think she sees me as a potential upsetter of that,” he says.

Mick Fleetwood.

Before Stevie and Lindsey, Peter Green was the soul of Fleetwood Mac. Just ask Mick Fleetwood

Founding Fleetwood Mac guitarist Peter Green died in July, five months after Mick Fleetwood organized an all-star tribute concert to his ex-bandmate.

March 24, 2021

His relationship with Mick Fleetwood is better, though it mostly exists via text message. “He’s talked about getting us back together. But that’s him, and he probably didn’t want to see me go in the first place. I know he didn’t. But there’s a difference between him saying that and Stevie saying that.”

So no, he says, he isn’t hanging his hat on a reunion. Anyway, the fans who still approach him on the street? To them, he’s still a part of Fleetwood Mac, there every time someone plays the band’s deathless recordings.

“People don’t talk about my involvement in Fleetwood Mac in the past tense. It may be chronologically in the past, but it’s living now,” he says. “Fleetwood Mac was the big machine. I can still get on with the small machine.”

Mick Fleetwood open to Fleetwood Mac reunion for farewell tour after building bridges with Lindsey Buckingham

"That has always been my vision and I am flatly confident that we can do that," says the Fleetwood Mac drummer

Mick Fleetwood and Lindsey Buckingham

Three years on from Lindsey Buckingham’s public split from Fleetwood Mac, and only 12 months on from Mick Fleetwood’s comments that the two would never reunite , the bandmates have now seemingly reconciled, with Fleetwood voicing his desire to get the band back together for a farewell tour.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone , Fleetwood revealed he has built bridges with Buckingham, saying that the two have been speaking more following the death of founding member and electric guitar legend Peter Green.

Said Fleetwood, “I’ve really enjoyed being reconnected with Lindsey, which has been gracious and open. Both of us have been beautifully honest about who we are and how we got to where we are.”

He continued, “I look at Fleetwood as a huge family. Lindsey’s position in Fleetwood Mac will, for obvious reasons, never be forgotten, as it should never be forgotten.”

When quizzed about the future of the group, the Fleetwood Mac drummer refused to rule out the possibility of a reunion in the near future, and voiced his desire for an eventual farewell tour.

“My vision of things in the future is really far-reaching. Would I love to think that [a reunion] could happen? Yeah. I’d love to think that all of us could be healed, and also respect the people who are in the band, Neil Finn and Michael Campbell,” explains Mick.

I know for a fact that I intend to make music and play again with Lindsey

He went on to explain, “I think the vision for me, and I think it would be hugely appropriate, is that we actually say, “this is goodbye”, and go out and actually do that. That has always been my vision and I am flatly confident that we can do that. We owe it to the fans.”

When addressing the possibility of Buckingham rejoining the band, Fleetwood pointed out the potential problems that the strained relationship between Lindsey and Stevie Nicks would cause.

“I can’t speak for the dynamic between Stevie and him,” offers Fleetwood. “I don’t even need to protect it. It’s so known that they are chalk and cheese in so many ways, and yet not.”

Despite this sticking point, Fleetwood is appreciative of his and Buckingham’s newly reconciled friendship, and plans to make the most of it when normality is restored.

“I know for a fact that I intend to make music and play again with Lindsey,” admitted Fleetwood. “I would love that.”

Lindsey Buckingham on reunion with Fleetwood Mac: "Maybe we’ll manage to see clear to have one more nice run out there. That would be the proper way to go"

It looks like he's leaving the ball in Stevie Nicks' court

Fleetwood Mac

For some, there is no Fleetwood Mac now without Lindsey Buckingham 's voice and guitar. His talents leave a void in their live sound, that took the band hiring two iconic musicians to even attempt to fill after his dismissal in 2018. But the sense of unfinished business remains, and the man himself is acutely aware of it too, despite forging ahead with last year's acclaimed self-titled solo album.

"Who knows," Buckingham told Classic Rock on a potential return to the Fleetwood Mac fold, "maybe we’ll manage to see clear to have one more nice run out there. That would be the proper way to go."

Elsewhere in the interview Buckingham is pretty forthcoming about the past issues in the band's ranks that led to his departure. And these all seem to be based around his tumultuous dynamic with Steve Nicks that has proved a double edged sword for Fleetwood Mac since the duo joined the band in 1975. Indeed, Buckingham hints the duo's issues prevented the band from recording another studio album after 2003's Say You Will.

"I was shocked to realise that the last Fleetwood Mac studio album, Say You Will, came out in 2003," the guitarist notes about the album he also co-produced, "We did want to make an album far more recently, around 2012. I had a bunch of songs, and Mick [Fleetwood, drums] and John [McVie, bass] and I went in with the producer Mitchell Froom and cut a bunch of stuff. This was before Christine returned to the band in 2014. We very much wanted to draw Stevie in, and for some reason she refused to participate."

I think she kind of lost track of her writing a little bit, and maybe didn’t think she had anything she felt she could offer, and so did not want to be a part of it

Buckingham has his own theory as to why Stevie Nicks came to this decision. "I have to assume that part of it is because like you said, I’d been very prolific," he tells interviewer Bill DeMain. "And again, that comes down to choices I’ve made. She, on the other hand, has sort of gotten a little bit disoriented in her wanting to pursue Stevie Nicks in capital letters, if you will. In defending the brand, as opposed to defending the creativity, I think she kind of lost track of her writing a little bit, and maybe didn’t think she had anything she felt she could offer, and so did not want to be a part of it."

Even then Buckingham claims that the band didn't give up its efforts to reconvene and work on new material.

"That effort to engage her was revamped again when Christine [McVie, vocals and keys] returned, because it was like, well, Christine’s back, maybe now Stevie will want to do this. Christine had a bunch of song ideas and I helped her with those, and we eventually went in the studio and cut those. And we were still hoping to make that a Fleetwood Mac album, and Stevie wouldn’t do it. That became the duet album that Christine and I did [2017’s Lindsey Buckingham Christine McVie]. So it wasn’t for lack of trying [laughs]."

As we previously reported , Buckingham has said that band founder Mick Fleetwood is clearly burning his own candle for Buckingham's return to the group for a last hurrah.

“[Mick] didn't want to see me go in the first place,“ Buckingham told Marc Maron on the latter's podcast in 2021. “It's really going to take Stevie coming to that point of view, and I haven't spoken to Stevie in a long, long time, so I don't know where that's at. It's certainly something that more than one person who is close to the situation has brought to me.“

Umc closes out season with fleetwood mac tribute.

fleetwood mac tour news

PHOTO PROVIDED Uptown Music Collective will close out its performance season with a tribute to Fleetwood Mac on April 26 and 27 at the Community Arts Center.

WILLIAMSPORT — On April 26 and 27, at 7:30 p.m. at the Community Arts Center in Williamsport, the Uptown Music Collective will close out its 2023-2024 performance season with Fleetwood Mac: Rumours and Other Stories, presented by UPMC.

This event will feature what many consider to be the greatest album of all time, Fleetwood Mac’s Grammy Award-winning album, “Rumours,” performed in its entirety, alongside many of the band’s other well-known hit songs and later solo works.

This event celebrates Fleetwood Mac as a legendary band as well as their storied history. This performance is sponsored, in part, through a partnership with Hudock Capital Group and Geisinger’s Janet Weis Children’s Hospital.

Fleetwood Mac, a trailblazing British-American rock band formed in 1967, initially made waves as a British blues band before transitioning to a more pop-rock-oriented sound in the mid-1970s. The band’s lineup at that time included Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, each contributing to Fleetwood Mac’s unique sound. Their internal romantic relationships, marked by emotional turmoil, deeply influenced their music, resonating with audiences worldwide.

The album “Rumours,” released in 1977, is one of Fleetwood Mac’s most celebrated works, born amidst the band members’ breakups and personal struggles. Despite these challenges, or perhaps because of them, “Rumours” soared to monumental success, dominating the Billboard 200 for 31 weeks and earning the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1978. It spawned timeless hits such as “Go Your Own Way,” “Dreams,” “Don’t Stop” and “You Make Loving Fun,” contributing to its status as one of the best-selling albums ever, with more than 40 million copies sold worldwide.

The creation of “Rumours” solidified Fleetwood Mac’s place in music history and showcased the transformative power of personal and creative tensions in producing enduring art.

“While I love putting all of these shows together with our hardworking students, the ones closest to my heart are the performances of classic albums like this one,” said Dave Brumbaugh, founder and executive director of the Uptown Music Collective. “Learning an album in its entirety, studying its elements and means of expression, and developing an understanding of how and why it was so musically and commercially successful, I think, is one of the greatest lessons we can impart to our students. Many of them dream of this type of musical success, and this performance gives them an up-close-and-personal opportunity to look under the hood of one of the most successful groups and albums of all time.”

Rumours and Other Stories will highlight the talents of the school’s elite performance group, Special Performance Group 1, comprised of students aged 14 to 19, who audition to be a part of the group and then work together to plan, direct, design, rehearse, and ultimately bringing to life the music that has and continues to inspire generations.

Along with the music, a professional-grade light and sound show will be organized by the students who work alongside the professionals at the Community Arts Center. As with all Uptown Music Collective performances, the students are not only the performers but also the directors of the show. A group of younger students, or “Tech Monkeys,” will serve as stage technicians.

This show is directed by Uptown Music Collective senior student Chase Cowden (Loyalsock Township High School) and Stephanie Nappi (PA Cyber graduate). The show’s leadership committee consists of UMC students Matthew Bellino (Danville Area High School); Izzy Butters, Jossian Lilley, and Scarlet O’Brien (Loyalsock Township High School); Connor Evans and Duncan Larson (gap years); Tixo Bower, Gabreon Godin, Grace Godin, Abby Jamison and Owen Miller (Williamsport Area High School); Brendan Kuriga (South Williamsport Area High School); Carter Rodgers (Muncy Junior-Senior High School); and Gianna Waldman (Montoursville Area High School).

With these performances being the last of the UMC’s official performance season at the Community Arts Center, the end of the Saturday night performance will feature the Collective’s “senior night” ceremony, which honors and recognizes those graduating seniors who will move on to college and away from the UMC in the fall. This year’s seniors include Chase Cowden, Gabreon Godin, Brendan Kuriga, Jossian Lilley and Carter Rogers.

“‘Rumours’ is one of the greatest albums ever made,” Lilley said. “Not just for its stellar performances, songwriting, and production, but for its ability to convey the soap opera-like nature of the fractured relationships within Fleetwood Mac. Relationships that the band was able to prevent from getting in the way of creating some of the best rock music of the ’70s. Lindsey Buckingham has been the member I’ve gotten to study the most. As a brilliant guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist, he’s allowed me to learn much about how those three elements combine to form fantastic music. As my last show, I’m beyond excited to perform the music of Fleetwood Mac, not just for the brilliant opportunities I get to perform, but for the show-stopping moments my friends and I will create.”

Additional partners and sponsors for this performance include Chartwell Hotels, KFC of Williamsport, Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships, The Kiessling Group of Janney Montgomery Scott, The Brickyard Restaurant and Ale House, The Stonehouse Wood Fired Pizza and Pasteria, Woodlands Bank, FASTSIGNS of Williamsport, Lycoming College, Pennsylvania College of Technology, The Hartman Group and Beiter’s Furniture, Mattress and Appliance. Media sponsors include Backyard Broadcasting, the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, Lamar Advertising, Schlesinger Communications, NorthCentralPa.com and The Graphic Hive.

Tickets for the performance, which are $20 in advance and $25 at the door (plus fees), are only available through the Community Arts Center box office (220 West Fourth St. Williamsport) and website (www.caclive.com).

Uptown music collective to play fleetwood mac tribute at cac.

fleetwood mac tour news

Year after year, area music fans know they can rely on the students of Uptown Music Collective to provide jaw-dropping concerts every time they hit the stage. Next week, audiences will get a few more chances to take in one of these stunning productions, as the school of music wraps up its 2023-2024 performance season with “Fleetwood Mac: Rumours and Other Stories” at 7:30 p.m. April 26-27 at the Community Arts Center, 220 West Fourth St.

The show will see Uptown’s students perform Fleetwood Mac’s legendary “Rumours” album in its entirety, as well as other hit singles from the band and some of their solo works.

“As the closing show and the celebration of our graduating seniors, the spring show is always one that we are confident will sell well and give them the send-off they deserve,” said Dave Brumbaugh, UMC’s executive director. “Fleetwood Mac, in general, is always on the people’s choice list for our fundraising show in January, and we knew that it would generate some excitement in the community. So, when it won out in the student voting last summer, we knew we were going to put that at the end of the season.”

Considered by many to be the pinnacle of Fleetwood Mac’s Hall of Fame career, “Rumours” spawned a slew of hit songs — “Dreams,” “Go Your Own Way,” “Don’t Stop,” “You Make Loving Fun,” “The Chain” — and won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 1978. Famously recorded during an extremely turbulent period for the band, “Rumours” plays out as a soap opera inspired by the group’s internal relationships and conflicts.

“There are a lot of factors in the magic of that album. The emotional turmoil in the band demonstrated for all of us musicians why it’s a great idea not to get romantically involved with people you are working with,” Brumbaugh said. “Although, clearly, without their emotional pain the album wouldn’t be the masterpiece it is.

“The songwriting is truly a notch above anything they did before or since,” he added. “The longing, the pain, the angst. It’s all so raw and easily understood by all of us earthbound fragile souls.”

Brumbaugh believes that UMC performances that focus on a particular album, instead of a selection of songs from various albums or bands, are incredibly valuable for his students. Not only does it allow them to study the music more closely, it also provides great insight on why the album is so successful, he said.

“For the students who have been part of the group for a while, and have been a part of all the various types of shows we bring to the stage, doing a tribute to an album gives them a clear target, overall vibe and the opportunity to delve deep into the production and character of the band they are emulating,” Brumbaugh said. “It is an excellent learning experience.

“Also, since we only do tributes to essential and unique albums — like ‘Dark Side of the Moon,’ ‘Led Zeppelin IV,’ ‘Rattle and Hum,’ ‘The Wall’ — it is music that in their time with us, they’ve learned about, studied, and now get to perform live — where they do their best to do the music the justice it deserves.”

Even before prepping for their “Rumours and Other Stories” performances, Brumbaugh said most of his students were already very familiar with Fleetwood Mac and the band’s biggest hits. While they’re excited to perform all the top singles from the album, those aren’t the only songs that have emerged as favorites during rehearsals.

“One that surprised me was ‘Songbird.’ On the first day of rehearsal, the band must have played that beautiful song for about an hour as they focused on getting the feel and the nuances just right,” said Brumbaugh.

One of the bigger challenges for the students in executing this show has been mastering the guitar work of Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham, according to Brumbaugh. His students have had their work cut out for them, but he said this year’s group includes some very skilled guitar players that are up to the task.

“(Buckingham’s) fingerstyle skills are high caliber and have caused a lot of the guitarists sleepless nights as they wrestle some of his guitar parts to the ground, like the whole live solo guitar rendition of ‘Big Love,’ the sweet Travis picking in ‘Never Going Back Again,’ and of course the subtle and tricking ‘Rhiannon’ guitar part. It’s great stuff,” he said. “Then there’s the overall musical vibe. The kids, however, jumped on it.”

There are two students directing the “Rumours and Other Stories” show, Chase Cowden and Stephanie Nappi. Those two have worked together with a leadership committee of other UMC students — Matthew Bellino, Izzy Butters, Jossian Lilley, Scarlet O’Brien, Connor Evans, Duncan Larson, Tixo Bower, Gabreon Godin, Grace Godin, Abby Jamison, Owen Miller, Brendan Kuriga, Carter Rodgers and Gianna Waldman — to decide all aspects of the performance.

“‘Rumours’ is a classic album. It is a musical masterpiece known for its catchy melodies and emotional depth within the songs,” said Nappi. “(Fleetwood Mac) has been able to blend personal experiences into their music, creating a timeless appeal that has resonated with listeners across all generations and has left an indelible mark on rock history.”

Even though Nappi is now directing a UMC production for the third time, she said every show creates a unique experience that makes it feel fresh. Her partner, Cowden, said his first foray into directing has been “very exciting.”

“It provides an entirely new viewpoint for me. I am looking forward to bringing this show together,” Cowden said.

In splitting up their directorial duties, the pair said they each took on the areas they are the strongest in. That means Cowden has largely focused on the groove and instrumentation in rehearsals, while Nappi’s attention has gone to the vocals and harmonies. Outside of rehearsals, the two found a nice balance in their decision making.

“Directing this show has had its challenges due to the intricate details the songs have, the unique tones and phrasing of the vocalist, and pulling from both live and studio versions of songs,” said Nappi. “The group we are working with has put in a lot of work to get the music to be as accurate as possible, which has helped our jobs as directors be easier.”

Brumbaugh had high praise for this year’s Special Performance Group 1 students, who have dedicated so much of their time, focus and energy into the demanding program. With the seniors of that group having only next week’s shows left before graduating, he said it’s a “bittersweet time of year” and that he is sad to see them going but excited for their futures.

“Whenever the rewards are great in a program, so are the commitment and sacrifice required to be a part of it,” Brumbaugh said. “Although we’ve put on a show just as good as some of this group’s performances this year, there haven’t been many. This may be our strongest season to date.”

Fleetwood Mac Announce Reunion Tour Dates With Christine McVie

  • By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

A little over a year ago, Stevie Nicks told Rolling Stone there was “more of a chance of an asteroid hitting the Earth” than Christine McVie returning to Fleetwood Mac . Well, it might be time to prepare for armageddon because the Mac’s keyboardist and singer – who quit the band in 1998 after a three-decade stint in the group – is returning for a world tour beginning this September and a possible new album.

Q&A: Christine McVie Can’t Wait for Fleetwood Mac World Tour

The tour, entitled On With the Show , will kick off on Tuesday, Sept. 30 in Minneapolis, Minn. at the Target Center, with the band performing 34 shows in 33 cities across North America. American Express® Card Members can purchase tickets before the general public beginning Monday, March 31 at 10 a.m. through Sunday, April 6 at 10 p.m. Tickets go on sale beginning Monday, April 7 through the Live Nation mobile app and Live Nation’s at  website.

McVie says that her decision to leave the band was very simple. “I had some deluded idea that I wanted to live the ‘country lady’ life,” she tells Rolling Stone . “But I went through a divorce and I felt isolated in the country. I grew quite ill and depressed.” McVie realized the best way to fix her life was to rejoin Fleewood Mac, though Lindsey Buckingham admits he had some reservations when he first heard she wanted back in. “I wanted to make sure she grasped the weight of would it would entail,” he says. “She also had to understand that if she was coming back that, basically, she has to stay. She wants to do it.”

With McVie back in the band , the group will be able to perform songs like “Little Lies,” “You Make Loving Fun,” “Everywhere” and many other songs they haven’t been able to play in nearly 20 years. “Being back is really a time warp,” she says. “The tour is going to be great fun. I feel like a pig in poo right now.”

Fleetwood Mac toured last year without Christine, though they had to stop short after bassist John McVie’s cancer diagnosis . “His health is on the up,” says Christine. “He’s still doing chemotherapy. He just came in to do his bass parts, so everyone is real excited about that. He gets tired quickly, but he’s definitely been on the mend. He’s been such a man about this whole thing. I have renewed respect and love for him.” McVie reunited with the band last year to perform “Don’t Stop”  in London.

The group spent time in mid-March working on new songs, though they don’t plan on releasing anything until after the world tour. They have yet to sketch out an exact setlist, though Buckingham has a good idea of what they’ll play. “It won’t be too hard to figure out,” he says. “Stevie and I both have songs we pretty much have to play. When you add in Christine’s hits, you pretty much have a set, though that’s not to say there won’t be a few little surprises around the edges.”

Slash and Chris Stapleton hook up for extremely lively version of Fleetwood Mac's classic Oh Well

Slash's version of Oh Well comes from the Guns N' Roses guitarist's upcoming blues album Orgy of the Damned’

Slash and Chris Stapleton

Slash and Chris "Tennessee Whiskey" Stapleton have combined their considerable forces to great effect on a version of Fleetwood Mac 's classic 1969 hit Oh Well . The track comes from the Guns N' Roses guitarist's upcoming blues album Orgy Of The Damned , which was launched last month with a cover of Howlin' Wolf's Killing Floor , performed alongside AC/DC's Brian Johnson and Aerosmith's Steven Tyler.

“So, this is the original Fleetwood Mac, which was founded by Peter Green, one of the greatest singer-songwriter-guitar players," advises Slash. "He’s less known in the public, but very well known to us guitar players re the 60s British blues and he’s up there with Eric Clapton , Jeff Beck, and Nick Taylor.

"He sort of had a misadventure with drugs and disappeared early in his career, but he had some great fucking songs and Oh Well is one of my favourites. I remember hearing the song on the radio when I was probably 13, they used to play both the older version of Fleetwood Mac and the new version of the band with Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham a lot. I always loved this song, and it’s a great guitar riff. I jammed it with the Blues Ball back in the ‘90s, and I've played it live here and there.

"I knew from the beginning I wanted to do the song on this record. It was also one of the songs that I was trying to figure out who would be the right vocalist for it, and one of the ideas I had was Chris Stapleton, who is one of the most brilliant singer-songwriters today. He's also got such a gritty and distinctive voice, so I called him up and he did an amazing job. I mean, his voice is so cool."

Other guests on the album, which is due for release on May 17 via Gibson Records, include Beth Hart, Iggy Pop, Paul Rodgers, Gary Clark Jr, Billy F. Gibbons, Chris Robinson, Demi Lovato and Dorothy, while Slash's band is completed by bassist Johnny Griparic, keyboardist Teddy Andreadis, drummer Michael Jerome and singer/guitarist Tash Neal. Full tracklist below.

Slash is currently on tour in Europe with Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators , while Slash's S.E.R.P.E.N.T. festival will take an all-star lineup across North America this summer to celebrate the release of Orgy Of The Damned .

The run of dates will begin on July 5 at the KettleHouse Amphitheater in Bonner, MT, and wrap up at the Texas Trust CU Theatre in Grand Prairie, TX, on August 17. Joining Slash aboard the blues train will be a supporting cast that includes Warren Haynes Band, Keb’ ‘Mo, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Robert Randolph, Samantha Fish, Eric Gales, ZZ Ward, Jackie Venson, and Larkin Poe.
