Weekend Getaways from Manila : Anilao Batangas

Due to its close proximity, a visit to Batangas is usually combined with Tagaytay as one of the options for weekend getaways from Manila. Besides, with its varying pristine beaches, delicious food, and stunning views, there are tons of things to do that can fill up your itinerary.

Batangas is a huge province and towns like Calatagan, Nasugbu, Mabini, San Juan, and Tingloy are just one of the many places where you can enjoy its delightful shores and local delights such as lomi, kapeng barako, tapa, etc . To start with, consider any of the below…

The path that leads to the shore is also a sight to behold what with its rice fields and friendly residents. Another option is Sepoc beach on the western tip which has a great viewpoint. If you want to take it a step further, ride over to Sombrero Island to do diving or snorkeling since the marine life is part of the ecosystem that is around Anilao and Verde Island . .

  • San Juan: The most well-known barangay will have to be Laiya ! Due to the white sands and clear waters, the area has since been laced with a number of resorts and guesthouses. .
  • Lian: Notable is Matabungkay Beach that was originally discovered in the early 50s by sun-starved Germans who were living in Manila. You will absolutely love its white shores! .
  • Lobo: If you’re still up for some more beaches to check off your list, head over to this southernmost tip of Batangas to visit Malabrigo Beach . It’s a different kind of scene though given that the shore is carpeted with pebbles — but it still makes for quite a sight to see! Nearby you can also check out the Malabrigo Lighthouse. .
  • Calatagan: Facing Verde Island, Calatagan enjoys being a part of the ‘Coral Triangle’; therefore, visitors can enjoy the rich marine life in its waters. A lot of people also seek out Manuel Uy Beach Resort for its camping scene as they go about their day exploring local highlights such as Starfish Island that has a magnificent sandbar. It is also known as the National Shrine of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, making it a favorite amongst Filipinos when they want their newly-bought cars to be blessed. Corregidor Island Memorial

Photo from Shutterstock Corregidor is an island situated west of Manila near Manila Bay, and it is part of the municipality of Cavite . It is best known for its huge role back during WWII because given its rocky landscape (earning it the name “The Rock”) and strategic location, it helped form a line of defense against enemy forces to the country.

As such, a lot of visitors who are interested in history (which is akin to a trip to, let’s say, Normandy) would often make this one of their b est weekend getaways from Manila. After all, there are several ruins and memorials set up all over the island in order to brush up your knowledge of World War II — the Malinta Tunnel ‘s 1000-bed hospital area, Japanese Garden of Peace , Mile-Long Barracks , Pacific War Memorial Museum , Filipino Heroes Memorial , and more.

Beyond this, however, you can also enjoy the natural beauty of Corregidor by partaking in a biking trail that will lead you to scenic spots and then end your day afterward with a sunset experience at Battery Grubbs which is one of the 23 batteries on the island that has ‘disappearing’ guns perched on a hill (another option is at the Corregidor Island Lighthouse ). If you rather want to go on foot, you can trek through the Cadena de Amor; it will lead you to the tail of the island that grants you sweeping views of Manila Bay. .

  • Strawberry Farm: Found in La Trinidad, this is a common must-do of tourists where you can basically pick strawberries yourself from the plots for an added fee. Otherwise, you can just buy fresh strawberries per kilo at a price that starts at Php250. .
  • Colors of Stobosa: Just near the strawberry farm is this community project wherein you can find hillside mural houses painted in various colors — a bit similar to the Gamcheon Culture Village in Busan , Korea, but in more vibrant colors. .

The home of banana ketchup , Eater’s favorite fried chicken , and arguably the world’s longest Christmas season (it unofficially starts in September), Manila is a huge metropolis made up of many individual cities and the homes of more than 13 million people. This huge, frantic scene can feel challenging for some visitors to the Philippines, which is why many pass it over in favor of idyllic rural paradises like Palawan and Boracay. But the complexity and breadth of the capital city have their benefits, providing space for countless cultures and subcultures, all best observed through the seemingly infinite food scene.

The first thing you’ll notice are the extreme differences in various pockets of the city. To the west, near the bay, is old Manila, home to Chinatown, the Golden Mosque, and the walled city of Intramuros, where the earliest restaurants and casual turo turo steam tables abound. They coexist with the manicured business district, where dining is determined by global tastes and the social habits of the upwardly mobile. To the north and south are residential areas, where food is familiar and comfortable. All of it is Manila; the prix fixe, the fried siopao (pork buns), and the skewered betamax (coagulated chicken blood) make up the city’s palate.

In recent years, Manila’s chefs and restaurateurs have found new legs to stand on, as Filipino food has achieved long-overdue international attention. They’re cooking their own cuisine on their own terms, fusing heirloom traditions, local ingredients, and modern methods to create world-class menus. Following the pains of the pandemic, a new creativity permeates the city’s food scene, as chefs accustomed to working in scarcity have become even more resourceful. Filipino food has always been good. Now that more of the world is ready to try it, Manila is more than ready to share it.

Toni Potenciano is a freelance writer based in Manila, Philippines. She currently works at And A Half, an independent design studio.

Rodic’s Diner

Filipino breakfasts tend to be savory and hearty, exemplified by the beloved tapsilog, a portmanteau of tapa (cured beef), sinangag (fried garlic rice), and itlog (fried egg). Rodic’s has been serving a version since 1949 that’s tender, sweet, and shredded like corned beef. According to a student documentary about the restaurant , owner Pacita Tecson got the idea to shred the beef from her sister, who wanted to make the typically tough tapa accessible to both children and senior citizens who might have a hard time chewing. Every Sunday morning, entire families line up at the branch located in the University of the Philippines for little red and white boxes of tapsilog.

  • Open in Google Maps

From above, tapsilog in a takeout container, with the top of the branded box.

In 2018, owners Biboy Cruz and Cereb Gregorio, owners of Kusina Luntian in Baler (a surf spot northeast of the city), opened a version of their surf town restaurant in Manila, rebranding it Gubat. The restaurant serves binalot, meals of rice in banana leaves, in a small bonsai garden where eating with your hands is encouraged. The lechon kawali (deep-fried pork belly), adobo, and piniritong isda (fried blue marlin steak), served with rice and lightly pickled vegetables, are some of the best sellers.

A small pile of chicken adobo beside a mound of rice and vegetables, served on a banana leaf.

Provenciano

Along a stretch of Maginhawa Street in Quezon City well-known for food, Provenciano serves heirloom Filipino recipes in a retro converted house. The specialties include adobong pusit sa bawang (baby squid cooked in vinegar and squid ink); KBL, or kadyos, baboy, and langka (pigeon peas, pork hocks, and jackfruit); and sugpo sa alavar (prawns in coconut milk, ginger, and turmeric). With the premiere of RuPaul’s Drag Race Philippines in 2022, the Manila drag scene has never been more exciting. Online specialty bakery-turned-weekend cafe Butterboy regularly holds Saturday drag brunches and meriendrag (a play on merienda, or snack time): daytime drag performances with set meals of pastries and sandwiches. The place is owned by Hilder Demeterio and partner Jayson So, who describe themselves as “not pastry chefs, just pastry gays.” You can preorder Butterboy for delivery Tuesday through Sunday (there’s no dine-in service on weekdays), walk in from 8 a.m. to noon on weekends, and reserve for events on the website.

Buen Comer Poquellas

Buen Comer started from a drunken debate among five friends about the definitive food to pair with booze. The result is the kare-kare burrito, a Tex-Mex Filipino innovation with a cult following that stuffs the classic oxtail and peanut stew into a tortilla. The rest of the menu — steak and fries, a Caesar salad burrito — pairs equally well with beer.

Half Saints

At the height of the strictest pandemic lockdowns, Half Saints’s owners Christine Roque and Jo Arciaga undertook the painful task of reengineering their cafe’s menu, resulting in a stellar pastry line. While mains like arroz con pollo are delicious, come for showstopping bakes like the Merci Buko Cream Puff, a choux au craquelin filled with coconut custard and young coconut meat, and topped with roasted pili nuts. Not to be missed are the Gruyere brown butter cookies and the cafe’s take on the local favorite crema de fruta, which here is encased in liqueur gelée. Roque and Arciaga are currently working on opening their first international branch in Tokyo.

Rocha’s Puto and Kuchinta

Marikina, a pedestrian-friendly city on the east side of Manila, is a bit of a food destination. The area boasts a lot of affordable restaurants and cafes, as well as a strip known as Puto Avenue, where small food stalls sell Filipino delicacies like suman (glutinous rice) and pichi-pichi (sweet cassava). But a trip to Marikina wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Rocha’s Puto and Kuchinta, the standard-bearer of puto Marikina, a remix of puto (steamed rice cake) and kuchinta (brown sugar sticky rice cake) with a bit of cheese on top.

Mang Leo’s Turon

Mang Leo can be found most mornings along the residential street of Esteban Abada folding sliced sweet plantains into spring roll wrappers. His turon — deep-fried banana lumpia with langka (jackfruit) and caramelized sugar — is one of the area’s best-kept secrets. He and his son Jeric are there till they sell out, which is sometimes as early as 4 p.m. It’s a favorite merienda snack among residents and nearby office workers, many of whom place bulk orders for his turons, which run P20 each (about 34 cents).

Two cooks work behind a counter, with banana lumpia in the making spread around and finished in a display case.

Rado’s Lechon

When former electrician Rado Bautista lost his job at one of Manila’s oldest distilleries in 1994, he turned to food to make ends meet. Today, his side street eatery is a favorite among the residents of Tondo, one of Manila’s oldest and most densely populated districts. He’s known specifically for tumbong soup, a clear broth served with pig’s large intestines, spring onions, and garlic. Bautista’s creamy version goes for about P125 (about $2.20) with a cup of rice. Rado’s also sells asado (sweet braised pork), kamto (beef brisket) soup, and crispy lechon kawali with grated papaya. Note: Simon Street can be challenging to find, but it’s roughly two blocks down from Ugbo, a food destination in its own right.

Habanero Kitchen Bar

Head to Habanero for the kind of food best paired with a cold bottle of San Miguel. Located in Cubao X, a community hub for artists and musicians, this restaurant is best experienced in the evenings when the area comes alive. Many of the dishes (and drinks) utilize habanero chiles, but everyone comes for the lechon habanero, a kilo of sous vide and deep-fried pork belly cut into slices and served with chiles and a soy sauce dip. It comes with a side of mustasa (mustard) leaves and buro (fermented rice and fish) for a little acidity to balance the salt, fat, and heat.

Orders of lechon lined up on a counter, with a chef working in the kitchen beyond.

Shanghai Fried Siopao

A walking tour of Ongpin Street — a major artery of Binondo, Manila’s historic Chinatown — usually starts with a visit to Shanghai Fried Siopao’s humble stall. The fluffy, slightly sweet buns are toasted on the bottom and wrapped around a sweet-savory meatball with chives. They’re sold by the piece at around P17 (about 30 cents).

Globe Lumpia House

Globe Lumpia House is a tiny eatery in Quiapo’s old Globe Theater that’s been around since 1956. It’s famous for its lumpiang sariwa: fresh vegetable spring rolls made with ubod (heart of palm), topped with crushed peanuts, garlic, and sweet sauce. Look for the line snaking out onto Raon Street in downtown Manila and you’ll know you’ve found the right spot.

El Depósito Brewery

This neighborhood microbrewery can be found along one of the side streets off another of the city’s notable food stretches, Wilson Street in the San Juan area. Craft beer has had a bit of a boom since the pandemic hit, led by places like El Depósito, one of the first microbreweries to set up a taproom in 2021. You can sample a selection of single-hop IPA beers, and the space hosts local brewery competitions and DJs who spin on select weekends.

Customers drink beers at small picnic tables in a concrete space outfitted with neon signs.

It’s impossible to miss this Cali-inspired taqueria, run by owner Mano Lotho, when you’re driving along Wilson Street in San Juan; just look for the detached industrial structure on the corner of Wilson and Arras with a couple of tables out front. Try the buche (confit pork stomach) and tempura shrimp tacos, along with whatever boozy agua fresca is available that day. Make sure to start with the chips and queso, which take advantage of the excellent house-made tortillas.

June-Nairah Halal Food Restaurant

Across from the Golden Mosque in downtown Manila, turo turo June-Nairah offers a wide selection of homestyle Maranao cuisine. Known as “the people of the lake,” the Maranao are an Indigenous group from the island of Mindanao, traditionally the predominantly Muslim Bukidnon-Lanao area. Maranao cooking is characterized by its use of palapa (a mixture of shallots, ginger, and chiles), coconut, and turmeric. Some must-tries at June-Nairah include chicken piaparan and beef rendang.

Cheech and chang hk roasts.

Named (with a bit of obfuscation) after the nearly eponymous stoner duo, Cheech and Chang has become a favorite of the residents of the west Kapitolyo neighborhood in Pasig. In a city dominated by indoor malls, the al fresco, bike-friendly establishment became the watering hole of choice when pandemic restrictions began easing up. The menu consists of Chinese-, Singaporean-, and Taiwanese-influenced dishes that pair well with drinks, like chicken and duck baos, bak chor mee, and dan dan noodles. If available, order the fried chicken skin. Top it off with a Spicy Mango Diwata cocktail from the attached bar, the Lotus Gin Room.

Cafe Adriatico

Many consider Cafe Adriatico the restaurant that heralded Manila’s bistro and cafe culture when it opened in 1979. Journalist Larry J. Cruz converted an antiques store on the corner of Macario Adriatico Street and Remedios Circle in Ermita into a Parisian-style cafe that became one of the landmarks of the historic Malate neighborhood, the center of Manila culture in the ’70s and ’80s. The cafe remains especially famous for merienda items such as ensaymada (a soft pastry typically topped with sugar and cheese), suman sa lihiya (a glutinous rice cake and lye water), and tsokolate eh (a thick chocolate drink) served in a demitasse.

The Aristocrat Restaurant

The Aristocrat traces its history as far back as the 1930s and is arguably one of the most beloved restaurants in Metro Manila. The restaurant is known for its sweet barbecue chicken with java rice, as well as the Flying Saucer sandwiches, both invented by matriarch Lola Engracia “Asiang” Cruz Reyes. Savor classic Filipino meals like lumpiang ubod (heart of palm), beef dinuguan (beef blood stew), and pancit canton (stir-fried noodles with vegetables), or stop by for pastries like carrot cake and mamon (chiffon sponge) loaves.

Goto Monster

On the outskirts of the central business district, by the residential side of Makati, Goto Monster serves beef tripe porridge with a twist. The best sellers include goto with bagnet (the Ilocano version of deep-fried pork belly) and chicharon bulaklak (deep-fried pork intestines). All bowls are served with a salted egg and a heaping portion of fried garlic. It bears mentioning that the house-made ice cream pops are just as divine, particularly the leche flan and the ginataang halo-halo flavors. Goto Monster is open 24 hours and best experienced anywhere between midnight and 3 a.m. after a night out in Manila.

Located on the second floor of a nondescript apartment building in Poblacion, Lampara serves a generous selection of hearty neo-Filipino cuisine and cocktails. It’s run by young chefs RJ Ramos, Prince Tan, and Alphonse Sotero, who all build on experience in the kitchens of other fine dining restaurants. Favorites include a starter of rice cups (inspired by lumpia), dinuckduckan (a duck version of the Ilocano dinakdakan), and pork (crispy porchetta, star anise reduction, and pork floss). Don’t leave without trying the inventive desserts, specifically the yema and tsokolate (sweet custard and chocolate).

A cook shakes a topping through a fine mesh strainer onto an ornate dessert presented in a crackly edible crust.

Along with the Curator, David Ong runs this cocktail lounge and listening room. An extensive selection of cocktails is set to the bar’s all-vinyl playlist, which pours out of the bespoke sound system. Like the Curator, Oto regularly hosts global bartender takeovers, but it also invites Manila’s finest young DJs to spin on most weekends, which has made it an indispensable part of the local nightlife and music scene. While everything on the cocktail menu is amazing, ask the friendly and talented bartenders for their recommendations.

Asia’s Best Female Chef 2016 winner, Margarita “Gaita” Forés, is best known for her Italian concepts, like the Cibo restaurant chain and her luxurious restaurant Lusso. She marries her love of Italian and Filipino food at Grace Park, a farm-to-table restaurant that pioneered the use of local and organic ingredients such as capiz bihod (fish roe), diwal (angel wing clams), and adlay (Job’s tears) when it opened in 2013. The best-sellers include organic lechon, lamb adobo, and baby crab fat spaghettini.

Tetsuo’s menu is inspired by East Asian casual eats like baos, fried noodles, and Japanese-style fried chicken, served with various spices: sansho (lemon and pepper), ichimi (mild heat), and Kaneda (hot and spicy), the last aptly named after the protagonist of the cyberpunk masterpiece Akira . Unlike the first branch in Quezon City, the hip Poblacion outpost is open late and serves canned drinks like Strong Zero, Horoyoi, and One Cup Ozeki. According to cofounder Sean Bautista, the restaurant tries to cater to the creative community, especially musicians and artists.

Gallery by Chele

Gallery by Chele is the revamped version of Gallery Vask, the multi-award-winning restaurant of chef Chele Gonzalez. Codeveloped with chef Carlo Villaflor, Gallery by Chele specializes in haute cuisine that makes use of local and regional ingredients like gotu kola (aka takip-kuhol, a traditional medicinal plant) and ulang (river prawn). Unlike its predecessor Vask (which had only a tasting menu), Gallery by Chele offers a la carte items, along with multiple set menus, including plant-based options. Reservations are encouraged.

Tucked in a quieter corner of Makati, Metronome is a modern French restaurant helmed by Joël Robuchon-trained chef Miko Calo. The place offers an exquisite dining experience with both a la carte and tasting menus, which demonstrate chef Calo’s mastery and creativity. Diners rave about the foie gras tart with tamarind and the Iberico secreto. Pop in during lunch for a classic ratatouille. Reservations are highly encouraged.

Txoko Asador

Tapas are having a moment in Manila thanks to spots like Txoko Asador. The restaurant offers some of the most delicious and creative selections of Spanish tapas and Basque-inspired grilled dishes and mains. The hot and cold starters include standouts such as pan con tomate — a lightly crisp bread pillow filled with tomato foam, wrapped around a sliver of jamón serrano, and Iberico oil — and the pulpo a la brasa, grilled octopus with black potato puree. The paella negra pairs excellently with a martini or white sangria.

Sisig sa Rada

A meal sold at any one of Makati’s tin-colored jollijeeps (food carts named for both the beloved chain Jollibee and jeepneys, decorated jeeps used for public transit) can be as low as P85 (about $1.44). For the average worker on a budget, these trailers are some of the more affordable options in the expensive business district. The most popular jollijeep can be found along Rada Street, with a laminated sign that reads “Sisig sa Rada” (Sisig at Rada). The stall’s version of sisig is a simple variation of the traditional Pampanga version, mixed with onions, peppers, and an egg, and served over rice. Lines for Sisig sa Rada can get notoriously long during the lunch rush, so best to go during off-hours.

The Curator Coffee & Cocktails

Since 2016, the Curator has consistently made it onto lists of Asia’s best bars, including a place on Asia’s 50 Best in 2021. Coffee is served in the afternoons in the store’s front, while inventive cocktails appear in the evenings in the intimate back room. Every so often, the Curator hosts global bartender takeovers, which complement owner and bartender David Ong’s regularly rotating menu of drinks.

JT’s Manukan Grille

The best chicken inasal is undoubtedly found in faraway Bacolod — a Visayan food capital — but JT’s Manukan serves a decent bird. Using the Ilonggo word for chargrilled, chicken inasal is basted in a mixture of calamansi, pepper, coconut vinegar, and annatto. It’s worth mentioning that the chain is owned by the esteemed Filipino actor and producer Joel Torre, who gained fame in the historic Filipino experimental film Oro, Plata, Mata in 1982. He still does films, but his chicken chain has become a favorite for Manila locals who just want to kick back with a good paa (chicken thigh), garlic rice, and an ice-cold beer.

The best chicken sandwich in Metro Manila can be found at Fowlbread, a bright blue facade and cement counter along Bonifacio Global City’s High Street commercial strip. The OG fried chicken sandwich combines a breaded chicken breast patty, house-made pickles, and a large chicken skin cracker for added crunch with every bite. Spice levels range from safe to chemical. Cool off with the strawberry hibiscus slushie, and make some room for the banana doughnut for dessert.

Milky Way Cafe

The original Milky Way started out as an ice cream bar in 1962, serving scoops, buko lechias (coconut and lychee) sherbet, and chicken asparagus sandwiches to Manila’s high society. Today, Milky Way continues to serve homey Filipino classics with inspirations from Pampanga, another food capital of the Philippines where chef J. Gamboa’s family is originally from. The classic halo-halo, a popular shaved ice dessert, is hailed as the best in the city, though also take a look at its minimalist cousin, ginumis: shaved ice, sago (tapioca), and gulaman (jelly) topped with coconut cream, pinipig (popped rice), and house-made panutsa ice cream made from cane sugar.

The Moment restaurant group has cracked the code to fast-casual dining in Metro Manila, and Manam is perhaps its best proof of concept. The tagline “comfort Filipino” describes the offerings, which feature classic dishes with twists. Order the house crispy sisig that adds a generous helping of chicharon (deep-fried pork rinds) on top of the sizzling pork, sinigang na beef short ribs and watermelon, and the crispy pancit palabok — a mountain of fried noodles that dissolves when orange shrimp sauce is poured over it. If you still have room, the ube shakes are served with sago (small tapioca balls), which is pretty much as good as dessert gets.

Chef Bruce Rickett’s Mecha Uma is celebrated for its modern Japanese, fine dining approach. The seasonal tasting menu features specialities flown in from Japan combined with local organic produce. Rickett’s philosophy has always emphasized produce, and the punchy tasting menus take inspiration from the ingredients themselves, which might include Hokkaido uni, shirako (cod sperm), and quail. Mecha Uma offers two dinner seatings each night.

Helm is an intimate 10-seat “dining theater” that offers an ever-evolving multicourse menu of technically complex and delicate dishes. Chef Josh Boutwood works with a produce-first mindset in order to come up with innovative menus for global gastronomes. Items might include bacalao spheres in a pool of blanched garlic sauce or lapu-lapu (grouper) in burnt onion and lemongrass tea. By reservation only.

Dampa Seaside Market

According to Filipino food historian Doreen Fernandez, one striking characteristic of Filipino food is a love of all things fresh, and the dampa (wet market) by Manila Bay is as fresh as you’re going to get in the city. A visit to the dampa is a two-part process: First, you’ll need to shop for your seafood of choice by the kilogram (anything from groupers, crab claws, and razor clams); prices may vary depending on availability, and you can haggle with most sellers. Then bring your prize over to a paluto, one of the nearby restaurants, where cooks will prepare your selection according to your preference (common ways include butter and garlic, salted egg, and chile).

Yardstick Coffee

When Andre Chanco started Yardstick Coffee in 2013, his goal was to “up the yardstick” for specialty coffee in a city that had only one or two places for coffee-based drinks. Today, Yardstick is an institution for leisurely cafe-goers and aspiring baristas. Besides selling coffee drinks, Yardstick roasts and sells its own coffee (retail and wholesale) and equipment for both home brewers and professionals. Try the branch-exclusive drinks at MOA Square in Pasay, especially the Manila Latte, which is like a nonalcoholic pina colada with an espresso shot.

A coffee counter, where an employee works beneath an ornate mobile sculpture.

Chef Stephan Duhesme challenges ideas of Filipino food at his modern restaurant, Metiz. The kitchen is known for its take on common household vegetables like talinum (Philippine spinach), patola (silk squash), and ampalaya (bitter gourd), as well as extensive use of buro, the traditional method of fermentation. The results are technique-driven tasting menus that are constantly evolving and surprising. Sample the beverage list, which features kombucha-based cocktails and bottles of low-intervention wines. By reservation only.

Toyo Eatery

Multi-award-winning Toyo Eatery (Asia’s 50 Best) and its attached bakery Toyo Panaderya continue to elevate Philippine cuisine with their progressive tasting menus that feature locally sourced ingredients and traditional cooking methods. Chef Jordy Navarra’s dishes constantly change depending on the season and ingredient availability, but every item is creative and resourceful. Plant-based and cocktail pairings are available. By reservation only.

Exploring Quiapo

Quiapo is a bustling district located in the heart of Metro Manila, Philippines. It is known for its vibrant street markets, religious sites, and iconic transportation, the jeepney. One of the most prominent landmarks in Quiapo is the Quiapo Church, also known as the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene. This church is home to the Black Nazarene, a dark-skinned statue of Jesus Christ that is believed to have miraculous powers.

Aside from its religious significance, Quiapo is also a foodie’s paradise. The district is home to a wide variety of street food stalls and eateries that offer some of the most delicious and affordable dishes in the city. From savory snacks to sweet treats, Quiapo has a little bit of something for everyone.

One of the must-try dishes in Quiapo is the famous Sotanghon soup. This delicious soup is made with glass noodles, chicken, and vegetables, and is perfect for a quick and satisfying meal. Manila Chinatown: A first timer’s guide to Binondo Food Trip

food trip destination near manila

Having spent 4 years studying inside Intramuros back in college, I asked myself why the hell I did not become a foodie when I was always a few sprints away from overrated and underrated kainans of Manila?

Well, that’s one of the maaaany regrets of my teenage years but I am making up with self now.

food trip destination near manila

And so fast forward one day of February, me and my coffee friends went to Binondo : the world’s oldest Chinatown. Damn. This food crawl is also pretty much a walk down in history too. Very interesting! To give you a little background, this historical Chinatown was established in 1594 by Chinese traders back in the old days of the Philippines. And knowing that Chinese Mandarin is still being spoken well by the Filipino-Chinese residents of Binondo today amazes me.

Salazar Bakery

food trip destination near manila

Coming from Lucky Chinatown Mall where we parked, our first stop was Salazar Bakery in Ongpin Street. First opened in 1947, this bakery is still a busy shop today. For starters, we had Hopia and Tikoy . But what aroused my palates was the Tikoy with Peanuts . I swear I thought it was weird at first but it got interestingly weird. And maybe interestingly good. I hella love the taste of Sago’t Gulaman and this tikoy is so insane it’s almost the same! Compliments well with the salty dry peanut filling. Love at first bite.

 Shanghai Fried Siopao

food trip destination near manila

On the other side of Ongpin Street is Shanghai Fried Siopao . This street siopao only cost P22 and for chrissakes, my friends and I agreed to share two siopaos for all of us. The reason was to save our tummies and avoid being fully loaded as much as possible but maaan, the taste is hella good! Such a breath of fresh air from the processed ones we are having just because it is convenient. I mean, this one is fucking authentic I guess? So all in all, Shanghai Fried Siopao is my best-spent P22 and I am highly recommending it to you . And not having a whole Siopao is questioning what the hell is wrong.

New Quan Yin Chay Vegetarian Food House

food trip destination near manila

Okay so this is the kind of menu that my fit fam would love. They cater to a wide variety of yummy food so we asked what’s their best seller and they gladly suggest the Seafood Soup . The big bowl of soup costs P150 and it’s very sulit . And for a vegetarian meal, I’d say it was tasty not to mention there’s a lot going on inside that bowl. Perhaps one of the best healthy eats in Binondo, for sure.

Café Mezzanine

food trip destination near manila

Located on the 2nd floor in the heart of Chinatown, Café Mezzanine is a fusion of Filipino and Chinese Food. We ordered Lechon Kawali (P135), Kiampong (P70), and Xiaolongbao  (P180). Fucking tasty! I swear I loved it very much.

Lechon Kawali is always a stunner but that one is a jaw-dropper. Like seriously? How can good food be 10x better?

Their Kiampong is hardcore tasty as well. I could eat that alone without anything.

And the xiaolongbao? What the hell is xiaolongbao anyway? I never had it before. But I knew it was great! I like how it gives your mouth bursting flavors of sweet to savory. And a lot of joy too.

Dong Bei Dumplings

food trip destination near manila

The famous hole in the wall authentic dumpling house in Yuchengco Street, Binondo. This tiny food house can be jam-packed, waited in line for minutes but they make your dumplings in front of you, so I think that was entertaining.

Okay. Can I just say that the dumplings were phenomenal? P200 for 14pcs. I personally think there is really no wow factor in this place but I like the fact that they are practicing the tradition of making dumplings every day. Fresh ingredients, made daily. Or maybe I still haven’t discovered the wow factor? But please, go to this place. You’ll love it there.

Eng Bee Tin

food trip destination near manila

Another famous Chinese deli chain in Ongpin Street is Eng Bee Tin . Who doesn’t know Eng Bee Tin?! I personally love this because I grew up loving its best selling hopia! Their 3-story store is super awesome too. 1st floor is a grocery, the 2nd floor is the restaurant, and the 3rd floor is a freaking museum! Holy WOW. But unfortunately, the museum was under construction and was closed to the public. Which was pretty sad. Anyway, this store has a lot to offer. Name it, and they have it. Quality restaurant and well, hard to leave without a takeaway ube hopia!

food trip destination near manila

Walking through Nueva Street in Binondo, you’ll see Holland . It wasn’t really that much not until the Chocnut drink mix  (P100) and Chocnut spread (P80). I mean, what kind of fresh heaven is this? I am biased in loving chocnut. Aren’t we all? We reached this mini grocery store at around 6:30 pm already and that only means missing Cuapao (pork buns)  Fucked, because I heard a lot of good reviews about it!

Sincerity Café and Restaurant

food trip destination near manila

So we went on the other side of Yuchengco Street. And honestly, though I was totally looking forward to going to Sincerity Café and Restaurant only for one thing: Freaking frog legs . But a boy could only be so unlucky. We missed it for the universe. So we ended up ordering their famous claim to fame  fried chicken  (half for P160) and kikiam (forgot the price lol sorry) .

Their fried chicken is, well, fucking fantastic. It is to die for! Super far from the western style good ‘ol f. chicken. The chicken itself, from the outer crispy skin down to the bones, it has a mild sweetness, a balanced mix of spices and a hella homey taste.

Oh, kikiam . This one’s quite authentic, wrapped in actual bean curd skin. I can say that it’s the best tasting kikiam I had. And the sauce, man. Freaking adorable.

La Zhou La Mien

food trip destination near manila

Since this is our 9th stop, let me fucking vomit first. Just kidding ! Hahaha I was so full already. But the heaviest meal comes at the end because life is full of unfair surprises. Me and my friends agreed to share a big plate of beef knife mien  for P260. And even if I feel very full, I still find it appetizing which for me was something new. I mean just looking at the photo itself.

food trip destination near manila

Sooooo after 4 hours of binge eating, we walked back to Lucky Chinatown Mall, had some Thai milk tea, drove to the world trade center for Big Bad Wolf (I happen to buy 5 exciting books!) drove back to Quezon City to drink beers until 5 in the morning. Ahhhh lupet!

Bucket list for the next Binondo food trip:

  • Fried frog legs (Sincerity Restaurant)
  • Po Heng Lumpia House
  • Masuki Mami House
  • Kim Hiong Food Garden
  • James Grocery Carvajal
  • Peking duck from Wai Ying Fast Food
  • ASADO ROLL 🙁
  • Visit churches

Top 3 Pop Food from this food crawl:

Marron – Shanghai Fried Siopao, Serenity’s Fried Chicken, Tikoy with Peanuts (Salazar Bakery)

Kean – Shanghai Fried Siopao, Dong Bei Dumpling, Kikiam (Serenity Restaurant)

Jeremiah – Dong Bei Dumpling, Knife Mien, Shanghai Fried Siopao

Angela – Xiaolongbao (Mezzanine Café), Shanghai Fried Siopao, Serenity’s Fried Chicken

CONCLUSION:

  • For fuck’s sake, think before bringing a car. Parking was hella shitty. Or better yet, come early.
  • If you think it’s good, eat it and enjoy it. Do not hesitate! Or you’ll regret the hell out of it.
  • Start the food crawl early. Some restaurants are only open until late afternoon.
  • Bring a water bottle. Trust me, it saves a lot.
  • I should learn more about how to take good food photos.
  • Good food is always better and cheaper when shared! We only spent not more than P500 each for all the food we ate.

Food Trip: Neighborhood Destinations in Manila

food trip neighborhood destinations

Looking for alternative dining destinations instead of malls? Here are some of the best neighborhoods and food streets around Metro Manila with top 5 recommendations per area. Take note that a lot of these places are mainly residential areas, so traffic and parking can be a bit of a problem. To counter this, we usually just walk or bike when we explore other neighborhoods for food-trips.

Table of Contents

MAGINHAWA & MALINGAP STREET Teacher’s Village, Quezon City

I may be biased because I live in the area, but Teacher’s Village in Diliman, Quezon City has become an extremely popular destination for food trips now. It seems that every week, a new restaurant opens up along the long stretch of Maginhawa Street from Philcoa to V. Luna Extension and has spread to surrounding side streets like Malingap and Magiting. There are several board game cafes and a LOT of food parks in the area, making it popular with the student crowd.

Z the zone outdoor foodcourt malingap

MY TOP 5 RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • Z Compound (Meshwe’s Beef Shawarma Plate, Falafel, Hummus)
  • Friuli Trattoria (Tre Formaggi & Margherita Pizza)
  • Tomato Kick (Seafood Marinara Pasta, Skewers, Fajitas)
  • Roberta’s Flavours of Asia (3-Way Appetizers: Tawilis, Catfish mango salad + Gising-Gising combo, Pad Thai)
  • Griddle (Steak, Lime Pork Belly, chicken wings)

READ MORE: Maginhawa: The Eat Street

PROS: Laid-back vibe, good food, lots of choices, food parks offer variety, budget-friendly prices.

CONS:  Traffic. Limited parking. Lack of bike parking. The new buildings are killing the neighborhood vibe of the place. It can get crowded during weekends.

  • Estimated budget per person: P200-P400 each
  • Nearest MRT/LRT: MRT Kamuning / LRT Anonas
  • Best place to park:  Street (if you’re lucky). Adjacent or parallel side streets and buildings with their own parking lots.

KAPITOLYO Pasig

Another popular neighborhood foodie destination is Barangay Kapitolyo, Pasig. While the nearby Capitol Commons has a lot of upscale restaurants and bars, the stretch of East Capitol Drive and nearby streets like Brixton and United Street have more budget-friendly options that offer everything from comfort food, desserts, to international specialties. My personal favorites here include Silantro Fil-Mex Cantina, CAB Cafe and RUB Ribs & BBQ. I heard there’s also a newly opened food park in the area called Gastropark Kapitolyo Food Park .

silantro kapitolyo pasig

TOP 5 RECOMMENDATIONS FROM  Pinas Muna :

  • Wooden Spoon
  • Grande Torino
  • St. Patrick’s Pub

READ MORE: Best Restaurants in Kapitolyo

PROS: Good ambiance. Restaurants with clear concepts and “Instagrammable” interiors.

CONS: Parking. Some restaurants are a bit pricey. Can get crowded during weekends.

  • Estimated budget per person: P300 – P500
  • Nearest MRT/LRT:  MRT Edsa-Shaw / Boni
  • Best place to park:  Pioneer Centre Supermart or Ace Water Spa

LILAC STREET Marikina

Marikina is not only the shoe capital of the Philippines, it’s also a great destination for foodies. You can find a lot of unique cafes scattered in different parts of Marikina such as  Industriya Marikina, Rustic Mornings and Mama Chit’ s. However, if you want to focus on only one area, a lot of hip new restaurants are concentrated on Lilac Street, Rainbow Street and Sapphire Street in Concepcion Dos. We’ve only tried Some Kind of Wonderful Cafe (SKOW) there, but plan to explore the rest of the area soon.

11. Some Kind of Wonderful Marikina bikes

TOP 5 RECOMMENDATIONS FROM  All Over Marikina :

  • Brad & Pit’s Rib Shack (try their Rib Mountain with Burrito Rice)
  • Cookie Mug (cookie shots with caramel, or milk, or chocolate)
  • Mandi’s Grill Grub (Crispy ribs with bechamel sauce)
  • Chubbie’s Qcina (pancit con lechon!!)
  • Mogu Tree Noodle House (laksa with cheese please!)

READ MORE: Marikina Food Tour: Exploring Lilac Street

PROS: Homey restaurants. Budget-friendly options. Some bike-friendly establishments.

CONS: Traffic, parking. Some restaurants are hard to find. It’s easy to get lost if you’re not familiar with the place. One way streets.

  • Estimated budget per person: P200 – P400
  • Nearest MRT/LRT:  LRT Santolan
  • Best place to park:  Street. Restaurants with their own parking spaces.

MANDALUYONG

  • Kanto Freestyle
  • Chef Arch’s Lime 88
  • Tabing Ilog
  • The Food Cathedral
  • The Deli at Shaw

READ MORE: Where to Eat in Mandaluyong

PROS: Laid-back vibe. Budget-friendly options. Unpretentious atmosphere.

CONS: Traffic, parking. The area is prone to floods even if it doesn’t rain. Roads being constructed around Mandaluyong City Hall make getting to the area a hassle.

  • Nearest MRT/LRT:  EDSA Boni
  • Best place to park:  Street (if you’re lucky). Don’t bring a car.

BINONDO Manila

Chinese New Year isn’t the only time to head to Binondo, Manila’s own Chinatown. Home to some of Manila’s oldest restaurants and small family-owned establishments, this cultural enclave offers authentic Cantonese food and history on the side. In fact, Ivan Man Dy of Old Manila Walks offers a walking and eating tour called the Big Binondo Wok all year around (which I’ve participated in twice). Navigating the narrow alleys is best done on foot to avoid getting stuck in traffic and to work up an appetite.

dong-bei-dumplings -binondo woman

MY TOP 5 RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • Dong Bei Dumplings (kuchay and pork dumplings, deep-fried scallion cakes, tofu Burger, xiao long bao)
  • New Po-Heng Lumpia House (lumpia)
  • Sincerity Cafe & Restaurant (fried chicken, oyster cake)
  • Cafe Mezzanine ( Kiampong, s tir-fried tofu, wintermelon tea)
  • Eng Bee Tin Chinese Deli (take-out goodies, crispy mikiron)

READ MORE: Food Trip: Binondo

PROS: The authentic hole-in-the wall establishments, budget-friendly prices and old-world charm.

CONS:  Limited parking, traffic, crowds. Some restaurants (like Estero Fast Food) are kind of scary if you have a weak stomach.

  • Estimated budget per person: P300 – P500 per person
  • Nearest MRT/LRT: LRT Carriedo Station (walking distance)
  • Best place to park:  Lucky Chinatown Mall and then walk to the area.

LITTLE BAGUIO San Juan City

For those who find the commercialized restaurants in Greenhills Shopping Center too expensive, Little Baguio in San Juan City offers a lot of alternatives. P. Guevarra and Wilson are jampacked with Chinese restaurants while side streets are lined with interesting cafes and pubs catering to residents. I haven’t really explored this place yet, but we recently tried Balkan Express, one of the few places that serves Serbian food in the city.

  • Nearest MRT/LRT:  MRT Buendia
  • Best place to park:  Power Plant Mall or A. Venue Mall.

AGUIRRE AVENUE BF Homes, Paranaque

For those based in the South, Aguirre Avenue in BF Homes, Paranaque seems to be the most hip neighborhood to eat. I have not explored this area because it’s just too far from where I live, but I’ve heard a lot of good things about the restos from residents of Paranaque, Las Pinas and Muntinlupa. The area is home to lots of unique, family-owned restaurants and well-known chains like Conti’s and Tito Chef (which eventually branched out) and trendy restaurants you can only find here like The Girl + The Bill and Magnum Opus Fine Coffees.

The Best Street Food Spots in Manila, Philippines

Young student girl in Manila

Street food in the Philippines is nothing short of delicious, offering a rich variety of flavours that will have you smacking your lips and shouting ‘sarap!’ With so much to choose from, here are the standouts to look out for on your Manila street food hunts.

Did you know – Culture Trip now does bookable, small-group trips? Pick from authentic, immersive Epic Trips , compact and action-packed Mini Trips and sparkling, expansive Sailing Trips .

Quiapo Market

food trip destination near manila

Public markets are great places to try Filipino street food, and this bustling ‘old downtown’ district of Manila has choices in abundance. From popular tusok-tusok (skewered delicacies, including fried and grilled isaw, aka pork/chicken intestine), to mami (noodle soup), fresh lumpia (spring roll) and the infamous balut , this place gives customers a fantastic overview of what Philippine cuisine has to offer. As a sort of free market, there are many things going on all at once here. Be ready to brave the crowds to taste the real culture of Manila.

Mang Larry’s Isawan

Mang Larry’s

While tusok-tusok are considered more snacks than full meals, Mang Larry’s grilled treats are meant to be feasted on. The dishes are light on flavourings (seasoned only with salt and pepper) and blowtorched to achieve a mouthwatering crispy skin. The sauce options are also minimal, kept to the classic sweet and spicy vinegar dips Filipinos usually pair with their fried and grilled food.

Mang Raul’s BBQ Haus

South Manila’s best choice for an isaw face-off comes with four signature dips, where the tamis-anghang (sweet and spicy) flavour has won many a customer’s taste buds. This shop has been around since the ’70s, starting as a humble barbecue stall in a village in Las Piñas. With the neighbourhood’s recent makeover – now known as ‘Happy Place’ – the BBQ Haus has swapped its former street ambiance for a more refined setting. However, feel free to dine in the surrounding stalls, as they sell rice to the shop’s loyal customers.

Concepcion Public Market

Malabon City is home to hundreds of classic dishes, which have been hugely popular for generations. One such classic is ukoy/okoy , a crunchy deep-fried batter made of shrimp and beansprouts and best served with a side of vinegar dip. Yet what’s most appealing about Malabon is the sweet and sticky desserts; enjoy peachy-peachy (sweet and sticky cassava) and sapin-sapin (layered rice batter) and satisfy your sugar cravings.

Three Sisters’ Restaurant of Pasig

Barbecue and pancit combo

A pioneer in Pasig City’s Kapitolyo food district, which initially specialised in the beloved Filipino halo-halo dessert and is now better known for its pork barbecue and pancit. Their new location across Kapitolyo church is bigger and brighter with the same tasty, generously-portioned pork barbecue at an affordable price. This is it what Filipinos call a ‘3M’ restaurant – masarap (delicious), madami (big-serving), mura (affordable).

Ihawan ni Kuya Speed

Affordable, accessible and good chicken barbecue – that’s how regulars describe this barbecue joint in Edsa-Mandaluyong. For less than two bucks, you can have a barbecue rice meal ranging from isaw, pork, chicken, liempo, tilapia and bangus. It can get crowded at lunch and dinner time with a nearby BPO company. Make sure to ask for their vinegar dip.

Boni MRT Station

The public market under the Metro Rail Transit System Line 3 (MRT-3) is an accessible spot for eating street food and Filipino dishes, carinderia -style. Clean eateries and food carts with traditional Manila street food snacks converge in the area, side-by-side with non-food stores. It’s beloved by commuters on-the-go and condominium residents nearby who crave lutong-bahay (homecooked meals).

Pro tip: Eating street food in Manila often comes with a warning: eat at your own risk. However, if you know where to go, you’ll discover amazing treats, meet friendly locals, save cash and learn about a whole new culture of what Filipinos call ‘ghetto grub’.

The façade of Quiapo Church, built in the baroque style, stands out from both sides with its rolling towers. A third of its column twists close to the foundation, while the bottom part has a soft surface.

The top of the four-story bell towers is adorned with balustrades and enormous scrolls. It’s a popular church included in most pilgrimage tours in the country.

In the early 1980s, a four-foil window in the center of the front of the church was screened, and a picture of the pope's crossed keys and tiara was substituted. Only the facade and the transept dome maintained the classic architecture with its latest refurbishment.

Subic Things to Do

Top 10 Things to Do & Tourist Spots in Subic

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double-check with the concerned establishments for the latest updates.

Subic is known for many things — being a former US Navy Base is one; but for tourists, Subic means beaches, amusement parks, adventure parks, and shopping, among others.

When we recently took a trip to Zambales , we thought heading back to Manila right after checking out of Crystal Beach Resort in the town of San Narciso was too early. So we decided to head straight to Subic to spend the rest of the day there exploring.

In this post, we’ll list down the things we did and places we visited in Subic, along with other popular activities that you can also consider for your trip. Note that these are just some of the things you can do in Subic Bay as there are A LOT of attractions in the area. But you can refer to this list if you have zero idea what to do for your trip yet.

Subic Bay SBMA Beach

Subic, also known as Subic Bay or Subic Bay Freeport Zone , is located in Central Luzon. It covers a part of Olongapo City , Municipality of Subic , and the towns of Hermosa and Morong in Bataan . Formerly a US Military naval base which was once the biggest in Asia, Subic is the first free port of the Philippines . It is managed by the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA).

From Manila, it takes about a three-hour drive to get there. If you’re not driving, public transportations are also available. Although not as straightforward as getting in your car and driving, it is doable. More details later. For now, here are some of the things to do and places to visit in Subic.

WHAT'S IN THIS GUIDE?

Magic Lagoon

Magic Lagoon Subic Bay

We arrived in Subic around 1PM, so our first stop was Magic Lagoon to get some late lunch. Magic Lagoon Restobar is one of the most popular dining places in Subic. It is known for the scenic view of the lagoon beside it, hence its name. Located across Subic Bay Yacht Club, the restobar is open 24/7, serving classic Filipino dishes and delicacies. Some of the items on the menu are kare-kare , chicken tinola , bistek Tagalog , pinapaitang kambing (goat) , and of course, sinigang , which is available in different protein options: pork, beef, fish, and shrimp.

If you’re just looking for a light meal, you can also order lomi, pancit, clubhouse sandwich, and burgers. For drinks, it serves fruit juices, fruit shakes, and coffee. But since this is a restobar , of course there are alcoholic beverages too. Among the options on the drinks menu is the “below-zero” beer, which they call balot sa puti .

Magic Lagoon

For our lunch, we ordered the grilled squid and grilled isaw because we were really craving something…well, grilled. However, they weren’t warm when they was served, which is odd for grilled dishes. As for the taste, they were decent, nothing spectacular, just as what you’d expect grilled squid and isaw taste like. Maybe their other dishes taste remarkable, but we’d have to try that another time. We also had some fruit shakes — ripe mango for Hannah, and green mango for me. It was just what we needed to beat the scorching heat.

Dishes and meals here range from P99 to P1,590 . If you’re a group, they also have “binulkan”, which are bundle deals good for 5-7 pax.

Price Range: P99 – P1,600 Opening Hours: 24/7 Location: Bicentennial Park, Rizal Highway, Subic Bay Freeport Zone

If you need a pick-me-up, there are many local coffee shops around Subic. We decided to drop by 727 Coffee located in Building 727 on the corner of Manila Avenue and Dewey Avenue. We mainly chose this coffee shop because the place looked chic on photos we saw online. But upon entering the store, we were welcomed by the aroma of coffee and we had a feeling the café serves a good cup of Joe. The packed coffee shop also seems to say the same.

727 Coffee Subic

Luckily, it also has an outdoor area where more seats are available and we found a table. I ordered the 727 signature, while Hannah got the horchata. The menu includes a variety of coffee choices and it was honestly hard to choose. From the classics like latte, cappuccino, and flat white to the signature drinks like honey oat lavender latte, zebra mocha, and the 727 signature.

727 Coffee

If you’re traveling with non-coffee drinkers, it also serves non-coffee drinks, including teas. And if you’re hungry, they have meals, waffles, and cookies on the menu as well. Their drinks range from P100 to P350 while their food items are priced between P100 and P700 . We weren’t able to try any of their food items, but we’ll definitely go back just for the drinks alone.

Price Range: Drinks, P100 – P350; Meals/Snacks, P100 – P700 Opening Hours: Monday to Thursday, 7:00 AM – 10:00 PM; Friday to Sunday, 7:00 AM – 11:00 PM. Note that opening schedule may change without prior notice, so check the official Facebook page for updates. Location : Building 727, Manila Avenue, Subic Bay Freeport Zone

Subic Bay Sunset

As suckers for sunsets, we wanted to catch the sunset here in Subic too so we headed to the SBMA Beach boardwalk. From 727 Coffee, you can get here on foot in about five minutes. We arrived at the boardwalk at the perfect time, because just a few minutes after finding a spot on the beach, the sun started to set. And as we take in the wonderful spectacle, more people flocked to the beach to watch the sunset, but it’s not crowded since there’s a long stretch of beach for everyone to enjoy the view.

Location: SBMA Beach, Waterfront Road, Subic Bay Freeport Zone

Maple 28 Restaurant

Before heading back to Manila, we went to Maple 28 Restaurant to have dinner. This was also just a few minutes away from the boardwalk, so we decided to walk there. You wouldn’t miss this because the restaurant has a huge sign right outside, on the corner of Labitan Street and Dewey Avenue. We immediately liked the ambiance of the restaurant including the live acoustic music serenading the guests.

Maple 28 Subic

Maple 28 has an extensive menu, starting from breakfast meals with Filipino and American options which they serve until 4:00 PM. It offers a variety of starters, soups, and salads. As for main dishes, the best sellers for international flavors include baby back ribs , beef burger , fish and chips , and nasi goreng with chicken satay . For the local dishes, the best-sellers are pork liempo , laing , sizzling sisig , and pork binagoongan . The restaurant also serves pastas and sandwiches.

Maple 28

Hannah and I opted for the rice bowls because they looked like a type of comfort food you’d want after a long day. And we were right. We tried the kimchi and beef fried rice and the seaweed garlic butter beef don . Both of them were really tasty and filling because these bowls are packed. When we went there, they were serving free lechon to diners for some reason and we also got a free crepe as a part of their promo! So just imagine how full we were after dining here. Lol

You’ll find a lot more restaurants around Subic that you could try too. Among the most recommended online are Coco Lime , Rali’s Restaurant , Texas Joe’s House of Ribs , and Meat Plus Cafe . If you’ve been to any of these restaurants or have other restaurant recommendations around Subic, let us know in the comments!

Opening Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 7:30 AM – 10:00 PM. Note that opening schedule may change without prior notice, so check the official Facebook page for updates. Location: Labitan Street corner Dewey Avenue, Central Business District, Subic Bay Freeport Zone,

We weren’t able to visit any shop on this trip, but if you love shopping, this should be in your itinerary. There are multiple duty-free shops and outlet stores around Subic where you can buy imported goods and discounted items. If you’re an impulsive shopper, we must warn you to prepare your wallets because you might not be able to resist.

NOTE: Inside the duty-free shops, items are priced in dollars, but don’t worry because the cashiers accept peso for payment.

El Kabayo Subic Trail

Subic grants adventure-seekers and nature lovers with a number of trekking sites. One of those is the El Kabayo Subic Trail . You can join MAD Travel’s Tribe and Trek program where you can explore the flora and fauna surrounding the trail and learn about jungle survival as well as making herbal medicine. The El Kabayo Subic Trail is home to Aeta’s Pastolan Tribe and the program aims to help the indigenous tribes preserve their ancestral domain. This helps tourists understand the importance of natural heritage and sustainable tourism.

Wreck Diving and Snorkeling

Subic Bay is filled with several vintage shipwrecks and remnants of WWII . These attract both local and international divers who have a penchant for wreck diving . Some shipwrecks in Subic Bay are the USS New York , the Oryoku Maru , the Sakura Maru , and the USS Lanikai . Some of these sites are only about 15 minutes away from diving centers.

There are several dive centers around Subic Bay and the rates vary depending on the course, the number of sessions, and the inclusions. Recreational wreck dive prices range from P2,000 to P3,000 if you have your own gear. If you will rent gear, add P500 to P1,000 on top of that.

If you’re not a diver, some diving operators allow non-divers to go snorkeling. The snorkeling fee with gear rental is around P1,000 to P1,200.

How to Get to Subic

If you’re driving, you can navigate easily using navigation apps like Waze and Google Maps . Simply type in your specific destination in Subic and follow the map. But if your only option is to take public transportation, here’s a step-by-step guide you can follow to get to Subic.

Public Transportation

Victory Liner Bus to Iba

  • Board a bus bound for Olongapo (P230-P380). Victory Liner has regular trips to Olongapo from several of their terminal around Metro Manila including Cubao, Sampaloc, Caloocan, and Pasay. You can just pick which terminal is most accessible to you and has a trip schedule that works for you. Although this wouldn’t be a challenge because they have multiple trip schedules throughout the day from early morning to late night.
  • Get off at Olongapo terminal. The bus would terminate at Victory Liner’s bus terminal in Olongapo and this is where you’ll get off.

  • Ride a jeepney to SM Olongapo (P13). There are no jeepneys within Subic Bay. The jeepney would drop you off at SM Olongapo where you can start walking to get to the Freeport Zone.
  • Walk to the taxi bay. From SM Olongapo, there’s a walkway that would lead you to Subic Bay Freeport Zone. From there, make your way to Ayala Malls Harbor Point to find a taxi bay.
  • Ride a taxi to your destination. It is important to know that taxis here in Subic Bay does not look and function like usual taxis in Manila. Taxis in Subic Bay are SUVs with the SBFZ taxi logo and body number on the sides instead of the usual taxi sign on top of the car. And these taxis do not have a meter.
