We thoroughly enjoyed our cruise at the end of last year. We had hoped to book again for September / October this year, but can’t currently find a suitable cruise from a southern port.

The staff are wonderful but...

The staff are wonderful Food and service fantastic. Nothing is too much trouble. We felt so spoilt. Upset though,as I have questioned an incident that happened to me. On the ship no one cared.No one checked up on me. Since being home the same. A month now. Customer relations have not been in touch. Despite me contacting them. Lack of care after an accident is worrying 😟 I guess.

An interesting and enjoyable cruise

The ports were all very interesting and I particularly enjoyed Tangier. I also enjoyed the activities on board. The craft tutor was excellent and the sessions on star gazing were very interesting. I was pleased to get the opportunity to see below decks and, of course, the staff were brilliant as usual. My only complaint is the fact that the space for dancing is very limited on both Bolette and Borealis which is a pity as many passengers enjoy this activity.

Sailing from Liverpool with quick embarcation. Crew where very friendly and helpfull. We were sent a very informative booklet a few weeks beforehand. Unfortunatly due to weather issues we diverted to Rotterdam where a swiftly arranged trip to The Hague was offered. Only real complaint is that arrival and departure times where not poblished before the cruise.

I walk with crutches and your company really helped with special aids (shower stool) cabin upgrade, and with carrying my food. Everybody really nice and helpful. Really great atmosphere.

Great customer service

I booked a last minute sailing this morning and as always the guest services are so helpful friendly and polite and will do everything possible to help. I have always found this every time I speak to them about anything. They are the best ever in my opinion.

The full package!

Superb customer service, great itineraries, fabulous food and good value for money. Much prefer the smaller ship experience that Fred Olsen offers to the huge floating hotels. I’m fussy but I seriously cannot fault them!

This last cruise wasn’t typical of our…

This last cruise wasn’t typical of our usual Fred experience and disappointed us on a couple of things. That apart,we’ve sailed with Fred many times and he’s our cruise line of choice mainly because it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles seen on the bigger ships. We don’t want a climbing wall,a kids club or an Olympic size pool we want a quiet holiday with like minded people and that’s what we get. We’ve met up with couples on cruises again and again through accident, not design. The crew become friends who are pleased to see someone they recognise from previous cruises. We love cruising with them. More South bound cruises from Rosyth,please Fred!

We always find the staff are brilliant from the time we arrive to the time we leave. The boat is always clean and tidy somebody always wiping down. The food is excellent from the main restaurant to the Lido Nothing is never no trouble Accommodation is respectful clean and tidy

Good facilities on a great small ship

Good facilities on a great small ship. Cabin crew and restaurant staff very attentive and helpful. Some difficulties with tours from the ship for passengers with limited mobility. More walking and difficult terrain than implied in the brochure.

When can I go again?

I have been on three cruises with Fred Olsen, the latest being a year ago. I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of every cruise, and sometimes in ways I didn't expect. It takes a while to get your head round the fact that your luxury hotel moves with you as you explore the world, and I wasn't prepared for the way I was looked after and cared for from the moment of arriving in the car park for boarding to the moment of leaving after disembarking. The cabins are fine (particularly with a balcony) the food is great, there is plenty to do, and the people who look after you do it with a smile. So I return from a cruise thoroughly relaxed, and with a brighter view of the world than when I left. This doesn't happen by accident, but is a tribute to the experience of the company and its staff, and their positive attitude in all situations. There was only ever one issue which arose almost by accident, and which needed to be resolved urgently. The way it was dealt with both during and after the event were just exemplary. Looking forward to the next voyage!

Highlights of Norway

Norway was my 3rd cruise with Fred Olsen, and as expected the cruise line didn't let me down. An experience never to be missed. From the wonderful crew, who treat you like royalty to the great food and entertainment. From the beginning of your cruise, you are welcomed on board at the cruise terminal, where the staff are very efficient and lovely. Everything on Fred's cruises are so beautifully organised, you cannot fault anything. I went on one organised excursion on the Flam railway, and the views were so wonderful from the train. We stopped off at a wonderful waterfall, where everyone could take photographs. I would thoroughly recommend anyone wanting to start their first cruise, to begin with a Fred Olsen Cruise. They are not too big that you feel like a statistic, you just feel like part of the family. The beds in the cabins are so comfortable, that you sleep a lot better than you do on land. My thanks to all at Fred Olsen for the wonderful experiences I have had in the last 3 year.

Staff very helpful and the whole atmosphere is that of friendliness. We have holidayed with Olsen for a number of years and now always look to them first. Prefer the smaller boats but do miss Braemar.

This was our first cruise and we thoroughly enjoyed it!

This was our first cruise and we thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end. We did not want a cruise where you spent days at sea, except for cruising the fjords, we spent approximately two days at sea, mostly overnight cruising. The sights of the fjords were spectacular; waterfalls, snowcapped mountains, quaint villages, ports and scenery. The ports were easily accessible and within walking distance of the ship. We only had one occasion when we had to board the tender to get to shore; this was due to a larger ship getting priority over the berth. The port towns were not overly crowded with tourists. We managed to organise a couple of our own tours as all the organised tours were fully booked. All the staff onboard, no matter what their position were warm, friendly, chatty, helpful and wanted to ensure you had the best experience while you were onboard the ship or off visiting the port. The food was delicious; there was so much choice and would suit everyone's palate whether you like plain, traditional, international or something a bit different. We had the drinks package included in our trip. We only paid for drinks not listed on the very helpful list left in our cabin to tell us what was and wasn't included in the package. We also bought coffee's at the cafe as we did not like the tea/coffee station coffee that was free.

The cruise was more than I expected…

The cruise was more than I expected only let down by the outbreak of Norovirus liniting what could be done and loosing two shore visits. The food was fantastic and they catered for my dietary needs well.

Great smaller ship experience.

The ship was a great size to get into smaller locations. Cruising under the Firth of Forth bridges was a highlight. The Scottish Isles were a wonderful itinerary with informative commentary provided on the journey.

Fred Olsen’s Bolette. Cabin Reviews and Cabins To Avoid (Real Photos – I Stayed Onboard)

If you are taking a cruise on Bolette you may be wondering which cabin would suit you.

I have just disembarked a cruise on Fred Olsen’s Bolette, after a wonderful adventure to Norway “In Search of the Northern Lights” .

Whilst I stayed in a midship balcony cabin, on deck 8. I had a friend with an ocean-view cabin on deck 3. He had two “Porthole” type windows. Ocean-view cabins on decks higher up have large, square windows.

We stayed in Cabin 6146. Below is a photo of me during the cruise, we cruised into the arctic circle!

Bollete is a New Ship for Fred Olsen – But Not New

Bolette was brought from Holland America Line in 2020

Fred Olsen prides itself on being a “family-run” cruise line. Bolette is named after the great-great-grandmother of the company Chairman, Fred Olsen Jnr .

She was one of Four R-Class ships (Or Rotterdam class ships) built between 1997 and 2000 specifically for the Holland America cruise line.

These ships all carry roughly 1,400 passengers.

She was originally named “Amsterdam.” Fred Olsen also bought her sister ship “Rotterdam” and renamed her the “Borealis” at the same time.

It is a little confusing that Holland America uses the same ship names over and over again – They now have a new ship called Rotterdam that was launched in October 2020.

Inside Cabins – Bolette Review

Inside Cabins normally sleep two people and are around 183 sq feet. Some rooms can accommodate 4 guests. These inside cabins are normally the cheapest cabins available.

There are 135 inside cabins onboard.

Cabins normally have twin beds, which can easily be converted into a double, depending on your needs. 

Just speak to your cabin steward, they are always happy to help.

There are cabins available that accommodate four passengers

If you are planning to have more than two people in the cabin, there are cabins available that have Pullman beds that can be pulled down from the ceiling.

Others have a large sofa bed that can be made up in the evenings.

What I Liked About The Inside Cabin s:

• They were a good size for an inside cabin
• The amount of storage space and drawers within the main cabin itself.
• A good-sized, tiled bathroom
• Well maintained -even though the ship is over 30 years old nothing was scuffed or broken

What I Didn’t like: 

• The older style of traditional cruise ship décor.  Lots of wood and beige.  Personal choice of course, but I prefer the décor of more modern ships like those of the  MSC  fleet or the newer Royal Caribbean ships. 

I am a big fan of inside cabins, as it saves money that can be spent on drinks, excursions, speciality dining – or another cruise!

My friend Jamie stayed in an inside cabin onboard Borealis which is near identical to Bolette.

One problem people mention is that it is easy to sleep – and sleep – and sleep in an inside cabin.  There is no daylight to wake you up.

Outside Cabins – Bolette Review

The outside cabins on Bolette are almost identical to the inside cabins in style and design.

The average size is slightly bigger, at 215 sq ft. They can also sleep up to four people, with some cabins having pull-down/Pullman beds or sofa beds.

There are 383 ocean-view cabins onboard.

They have either a porthole or a bigger, square window, depending on which deck you are on. 

Oceanview cabins are the next step up to an inside cabin and are a good choice if you think you would miss having natural light in your cabin. 

It is a cheaper option than a balcony suite cabin, but still gives you views of the ocean – albeit with no actual outside space.

What I Liked About The Oceanview Cabin s:

• A good-sized, tiled bathroom with a bath and shower over.
• Even though the ship is over 30 years old, it has been very well maintained throughout.
• Bright light and airy.

• The older style of traditional cruise ship décor. Lots of wood and beige. Personal choice of course, but I prefer the décor of more modern ships like those of the  MSC  fleet or the newer Royal Caribbean ships.

Balcony Suite Cabins – Bolette Review

Fred Olsen doesn’t offer standard “balcony” cabins as you would find on many other cruise ships.

“Balcony” cabins are known as “Balcony Suites” .

There are 120 of these balcony suites onboard. I was lucky enough to stay in one of these suites, and it was very comfortable.

A standard balcony suite cabin is around 235 sq ft.  Some balcony cabins can accommodate four guests with one bed coming down from the ceiling and a sofa bed.

There were two of us travelling and we had the room set up with just one double bed.

W hat I Loved About My Balcony Suite Cabin On Bolette

• Very comfy beds – unfortunately I was quite seasick on this winter, Northern Lights sailing. I spent more time in bed than usual!
• The storage space and drawers within the main cabin itself.
• Good choice of TV and Movies to watch.
• An actual bath, with a shower over it in the bathroom.
• The cabin was always spotlessly clean.

What I Didn’t Love About My Balcony Suite Cabin On Board Bolette

• The older style of traditional cruise ship décor. Lots of wood and beige. Personal choice of course, but I prefer the décor of more modern ships like those of the  MSC  fleet or the newer Royal Caribbean ships. This ship is over 30 years old but is maintained very well, with no scuffs, marks or damages.
• No USB plugs or sockets by the beds. Again, this is down to the age of the ship, and there are plenty of plug sockets in the desk area.
• Smoking on the balconies! I don’t smoke, but if you did you can here – and an ashtray is provided!

Terrace Cabins – Bolette Review

Bolette has 7 “Terrace Cabins”, with a room size: of approximately 218 sq ft.

This is smaller than the balcony suite cabin I stayed in.

These unusual Terrace Cabins have sliding patio doors straight out onto the promenade deck .

They have a double bed which can be converted to singles and all the other cabin features you would expect.

The sliding patio doors are like one-way mirrors – you can see everyone walking past on the promenade deck, but they can’t see into your room.

I think it is nice that you can go straight out on to the promenade deck if you want to. You have plenty of daylight, but no private outside space.

I recently cruised on P&O’s Iona and had a Conservatory Mini Suite cabin. We had a balcony area that opened out on to the Promenade deck – but you couldn’t actually get out there because of the balcony railings.

Bolette Suites

There is a range of different suites that you can book on Bolette.

The size of these suites varies a great deal, with the largest, the Owner’s Suite, being a massive 1273 Square feet!

A “Premier Suite” is smaller – but is still a very acceptable 575 Square feet!

I have never stayed in a suite on a cruise ship, although I have been lucky enough to be invited to look at the suites of friends who have!

Do Fred Olsen Cruises Provide Bathrobes?

Fred Olsen provides bathrobes in suite cabins if you are sailing for three or more nights.

“Bathrobes are also available for use in other cabin grades, subject to availability. A refundable deposit is required and a charge is made to cover laundry costs.” Fred olsen cruise lines

So if you want a bathrobe and it isn’t automatically provided, speak to your room steward.

Do The Cabins on Bolette have TVs?

All cabins on the Bolette come with TVs. In our cabin, there was a flat-screen TV on the unit at the foot of the bed.  It was easy to move it so that you always had a good view.

They have a good range of films and box sets and a selection of news channels.

Unlike many cruise lines, they don’t have lots of channels in different languages, so there is plenty of channel choices!

Do The Cabins on Bolette have Kettles?

All the cabins on Bolette came with a kettle and some tea/coffee-making facilities.

If there aren’t the tea bags that you’d like, feel free to take some from the buffet back to your room, I always do!

Do The Cabins on Bolette have Safes?

All cabins on Bolette have safes. Ours was quite small, and could be found on one of the shelves in the wardrobe/closet area outside the bathroom.

Cabins to Avoid – Bolette

If you suffer from motion sickness, I would avoid a cabin right at the front or right at the back of the ship.

I do get seasick, and unfortunately did feel a little unwell on this cruise, despite having a cabin in the middle of the ship. This was probably due to a number of things:

• The Itinerary – it was a winter cruise, we sailed in March 2023
• The destination – going across the North Sea in the winter months can be rough.
• The size of the ship – she is quite small. Although she does have stabilizers (retrofitted in 2022) she seemed to move more than some other ships I have sailed on.

Deck 3 Terrace Cabins

I don’t think I would book a Terrace cabin, as I think I might find it distracting with people walking by outside whilst I am trying to relax – even if they can’t see into the cabin itself.

There are lots of people who love these cabins though.

Deck 3 and 5 Forward

If you are somebody who likes to sleep early and needs it to be quiet I would recommend avoiding the cabins at the front of decks 3 and 6. These are above and below the theatre.

The late theatre shows usually started at 10:30 so the noise would be happening until around 11:30.

If you have mobility issues, I wouldn’t book a cabin on the lower decks. There are actually passenger cabins right down on deck 1 on Bolette!

If you want to go up to the top deck (deck 9) it is a lot of stairs! We found the lifts/elevators were always busy on our cruise.

Fortunately, I have no mobility issues, and am very happy to use the stairs – it means I can eat more cookies!

Should You Book a Guaranteed Cabin?

I normally would choose a “guaranteed cabin” to save money and the cruise line pick the location. 

I didn’t pick my cabin location on this trip – but I think I was very fortunate to get a mid-ship cabin. I am sure my seasickness would have been even worse if I was right at the front or the back of the ship!

I am perfectly happy and able to walk great distances, and nothing much disturbs my sleep.

Not everyone is the same though, and I perfectly understand people choosing their cabins very carefully.

Would I Recommend These Cabins?

I would definitely recommend the cabins onboard Bolette. They felt as though they had been well looked after and our cabin was spacious, always spotlessly clean and very comfortable.

We had a wonderful trip to Fred Olsen’s Bolette! I enjoyed the destination, the staff were wonderful, and It was nice to get a taste of traditional, small-ship cruising.

I often cruise on larger, less traditional ships so it made a nice change to try something different .

Fred Olsen Braemar Cruise Ship Review

With just 929 passengers and 400 crew its one of the smallest ships we have ever cruised on, in fact it’s the shortest ship in the Fred Olsen Fleet. So is bigger better or small but perfectly formed the way to go? Here is our Fred Olsen Braemar Cruise Ship Review.

So lets start at the very top of the ship and work our way down.

Upper sun deck on the Braemar Cruise Ship

This is for the serious sun worshippers situated one deck up from the pool area. You can access it via the observatory or by a staircase at the end of the pool deck. There are lots of sunbeds, is much quieter than the sun deck and has stunning views over the bow of the ship. There is a golf net for practising your long drives too.

Marquee Deck 8 – Sun Deck Braemar Cruise Ship

For a ship of its size the sun deck was much bigger than we expected. There were more than enough sun beds to go around, which all had a lovely thick padded mattress on them, and were really comfortable. The sun deck has two swimming pools, a paddling pool and two whirl pools. One of the pools had signs stating that it was for adults only but this was never policed which we found a little disappointing but overall we were very impressed. It was never very busy and there were no sunbed hoggers on board which was great. We love cruising but somethings do make us mad, find what drives us crazy in this video here .

Marquee bar

Situated between the pool bar and the adult swimming pool this is a seating area with large sofas and square tables. Its a great place to sit if lying on a sun bed is not your thing or to cool off with a drink from the bar. If you fancy a snack there is a light lunch menu that changes daily that includes fish and chips, salads, burgers and even a traditional ploughman’s lunch. This was all included in our cruise fare. We do have to say the bar service here was quite slow, we found it much quicker to go to the bar rather than wait for the waiter service, but the food came out really quickly.

Grampian Restaurant

Classed as one of the two main dining rooms the Grampian offers you a slightly more exclusive dining experience. Smaller table sizes and lovely sea views it really is a nice place to eat. If this is your designated restaurant you will be allocated a table for your evening al la carte meal. They also offer breakfast and lunch with the option of buffet or waiter service which is open to everybody. One tip for eating here for breakfast or lunch is when you go into the restaurant try to get a table as far round to the right as possible as this is where the buffet is situated .

Observatory Bar

This was our favourite indoor place on the ship with stunning 180 degree panoramic views over the front of the ship. Lots of comfortable seating and our favourite staff member Thitaree bringing you your drinks it was a great place to be day or night. With regular performances by Jason playing classical music on the the piano it was as close to the perfect lounge as we have found. If you needed more persuading it’s also the home of the classic Fred Olsen afternoon tea. With silver service waiting staff this was a real treat, dainty finger sandwiches, scrumptious cakes and a selection of fresh warm scones with lashings of clotted cream and jam all washed down with a wonderful selection of teas from the famous Taylor’s of Harrogate. It does cost a additional £8.95 per person but we felt it was well worth it.

Lido Deck 6 on the Braemar Cruise Ship

Less formal than the two main dining rooms open for breakfast, lunch, self service afternoon tea, dinner and the late night supper club. Always lots of choice and one of the things we liked was despite the fact that it’s a buffet restaurant there are still waiters looking after you. Getting your tea coffee and any other drinks you might want during your meal, nothing was to much trouble. Just outside the Palms is a really nice decked area that over looks the back of the ship where you can dine Al Fresco.

Pin for Future Reference

Situated at the rear of the Palms cafe this lovely outside decked area is the only speciality restaurant on the ship. Weather permitting its open in the evenings between 6.30 and 9.00 and does offer some of the best views you’ll find anywhere on the ship. We didn’t eat here but did see some of the food on offer and have to say it looked pretty impressive and at £20 per person seemed like very good value

Lounge deck 5

The promenade.

This is many peoples including Carole’s favourite part of the ship and the Braemar does not disappoint. A full wrap around deck with plenty of seating for you to sit and enjoy the view or for a rest if you’ve been power walking. Lots of people seem to ask this question so for the athletes among you four laps equals one mile. If you want to stop for some refreshments there is a lovely area at the back of the ship with comfortable chairs and sofas. With easy access to the Coral club, you can grab a drink and cool off in between laps.

We’ve never given the bow of a ship a paragraph of its own in any of our previous cruise ship blogs but the bow on the Braemar truly deserves one. With easy access from the promenade it is one of the best places on the ship for early morning sail ins and a great place to capture those sunsets and sunrises while at sea. It also allows you to have that special “king of the world” moment!

Neptune lounge

Seating 450 people the Neptune is the main show lounge. It has small sofas or swivel chairs all with small round tables in front. With three levels joined together by a sloping walkway its excellent for people with mobility issues as there are no steps to negotiate.

We watched some excellent shows in here with the highlights being a brilliant Queen tribute show by the Fred Olsen show team. There was also an operatic performance by Britain’s got talent finalist Faith Tucker who put in such a moving performance it had some of the audience in tears. Before the main show every night the Neptune also hosts the evening dance date with music by the Braemar orchestra. Its a bit like a tea dance where they run through various dances and if you haven’t got a dance partner they even provide that for you as well. There are 3 or 4 men and 1 lady who happily step in as your partner meaning no one has to miss out. Fred Olsen really does like to look after the solo cruiser. Our only criticism of this lounge would be that if you sit to the right hand side of the stage it’s virtually impossible to get out while a show is in progress.

Morning light pub

Leather chesterfield style sofas and comfortable high back chairs are a plenty in the Morning Light Pub. With a large model ship and lots of nautically themed paintings including one of Fred Olsen and his brothers, it really has got that pub at sea feel to it. Jerry and his staff were very efficient and kept our drinks topped up, delivered with bar snacks including peanuts , twiglets and Bombay mix. Jonathon Kelly the resident pub singer entertains you throughout the day and night with all your favourite tunes. This is an excellent place for a pre show drink or a quieter alternative to the entertainment in the coral club.

Casino on the Braemar Cruise Ship

There isn’t a casino on board, just two gaming tables which offer, black jack and roulette. There are no fruit machines or bandits. Found between the morning light and the bookmark cafe despite it being small it always seemed popular.

The Library

With seating for around 40 people this was a real nice place if reading is your thing. Lots of high back chairs and tables a sofa and with a centre piece of a large round glass table with a giant coloured head on it. See photo as it’s much easier than trying to describe it, we’ve never seen anything quite like it before! A semi circular bookcase containing a ample amount of books is tucked away in the corner plus a glass cabinet full of board games. There was also a glass box for depositing of your old books for sanitisation which we thought was a great idea.

The Bookmark cafe

If speciality coffees or hand crafted cakes and chocolates are your thing you will love the bookmark cafe. Lots of comfortable seating and always very popular in the mornings. It did seem like the perfect place for some quiet relaxation. Boxes of speciality chocolates are also available gift wrapped making a lovely present for the chocolate lovers you have left at home.

Set over 5 floors it may not have the the glitz and glamour of some cruise ships. It does however boast is a 25 metre high mural depicting a man looking out to sea at a tall ship, Maybe it’s Fred Olsen himself .

The Coral club

Best described as a smaller version of the Neptune lounge. Set on two levels with plenty of comfortable seats again no stairs or steps between levels so very wheelchair friendly. A coral themed carpet covers the whole floor space apart from a shell shaped dance floor. Quizzes (very Hard) bingo and general talks during the day with house band Funky Blue belting a wide array of top tunes taking you into the night. They also have one or two shows from the show team and cruise director Nick which were excellent.

Thistle restaurant

This is the main dining room providing breakfast and lunch. There is a small selection off the menu or you can choose to help yourself to the very wide selection available from the buffet. Dinner has two sittings 6.15 and 8.30 and this comes in the form of a five course a la  carte menu. Because its fixed sittings you get the same table and the same waiters every night which we really like. You really get to know your waiters and we had lots of fun banter with ours. The service and food in here was excellent throughout. One thing you must look out for is the amazing Fred Olsen seafood buffet lunch. We’ve been to far more cruise ship buffets than we should have and this is one of the most spectacular spreads we have ever seen at a ship’s buffet.

Our Verdict of the Braemar Cruise Ship

The Braemar was everything we had hoped it would be and more and delivered on every level. From the food and entertainment to the staff and cleanliness of the ship it was all top drawer,But are favourite thing about the ship was the outside spaces which they have utilised perfectly , we will definitely be back!

This was mine and the wife's first Cruise it was a bucket list thing for my 60th. I can not praise the whole experience of being cared for by Fred Olsen and the staff on the Balmoral, from start to finish they looked after us . Pulled up in the carpark they take your luggage out of the car and the next time you see it it's in your cabin , you then stroll to the departure lounge to get your passport checked and then board the ship . They look after your everyday needs , food delicious, staff incredible and sites amazing . We cruised to Norwegian Ffords. This was our first cruise experience and won't be our last , WELL DONE FRED OLSEN , *****

My first Fred trip

This was my first Fred trip and my friend had given me such good recommendations from her previous trips and it went over and above what I had experienced with other companies. The accommodation was excellent as a single passenger, the food and service was excellent. All staff were so kind, friendly and helpful. The trips were well done but as there had been a problem in Lisbon which had prevented us from completing the tour, I think we should have received a refund but it was never offered. The onboard entertainment provided was excellent with so much choice. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and look forward to my my next trip, hopefully in 2025.

Fred Olsen is a great company

Our first ever cruise. I’m so glad we choose Fred Olsen’s Borealis. Comfortable sea view cabin. All crew were friendly, helpful and courteous. Excellent food. Borealis is a great ship, easy to find your way around. Will definitely be going back again on another cruise in the future.

An enjoyable first cruise and I am looking forward to another with Fred Olsen

As a first time cruiser, I was not sure what to expect on Borealis. My cabin was well set out, comfortable and very clean, it had everything that I needed and the staff were very helpful (particularly when I mislaid my key) The public areas were bright and cheerful, with plenty of places to enjoy the view, have coffee or drinks and meet other passengers. The restaurant staff were friendly and efficient, the meals enjoyable and good, if not always 'gourmet dining'. I enjoyed the evening entertainment, even when it was not what I would not normally attend. I was glad that the ship was not larger, as at the stops, it did take some time for all the passengers to disembark onto the booked tours.

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines: A Consistently High Standard

We have cruised many times with FOCL and have other cruises booked. This one, to Madeira, Spain and Portugal was especially memorable because all three ships in the fleet met in Funchal. The ships are are of a sensible size with excellent facilities accessible to all regardless of cabin size or cost. They are NOT floating blocks of flats and are NOT modelled on theme parks! The staff are tremendous, courteous and seem very happy. FOCL would appear to treat them well and this loyalty is reflected in guest care. We are treated as guests, as contrasted with passengers, on FOCL cruises. There are interesting lectures on sea days and the entertainment is of a very high standard. The food is top class. The destinations are always interesting and the organised tours are very informative. You can be as organised as you want to be or do your own thing in ports. Because the ships are not enormous, but still ocean-going liners, they can access ports which other cruise lines can't reach. You will not be disappointed if you travel with Fred.

When sailing with Fred it is like getting home and putting on your slippers! Always a warm welcome with staff who cannot do enough for you. Some even recognise you from your last cruise. Good food and entertainment, reasonable bar prices. It is easy to make friends with fellow passengers too.

Canada in The Fall involved crossing…

Canada in The Fall involved crossing the Atlantic twice, 5 days at sea each way. Despite very rough seas due to storm Babet , (wind Force 12, 6.5m swells) we thoroughly enjoyed the cruise. Apart from some occasional crashes in the kitchen and zig-zagging down the corridors everything went ahead pretty much as usual, the wild weather provided a bit of excitement! The on board entertainment exceeded expectations, especially the Borealis musical theatre group and the classical musicians. We enjoyed taking part in the art classes and impromptu choir, and some of the talks. Food was good, not exceptional, and the 8.30 sitting was too late for us, so we went to the buffet most evenings. The Colours and Taste oriental restaurant was very good. The fall colours were not actually very evident, too early in Autumn. But we enjoyed exploring at the variety of smaller stops, and Quebec and St Johns were highlights. We were comfortable in our lower deck sea view cabin, and slept well despite the weather. The boat never felt crowded, there were always quiet spots to relax in, we appreciated the art works throughout the ship. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed the cruise and would happily repeat it.

Trip was excellent staff aboard ship very very nice and helpful food delicious and ship spotless.the only thing was internet not included needed to pay more when boarded so I would rather it went on price at start.

All the staff are amazing

All the staff are amazing, very helpful and attentive. Everywhere extremely clean, good beautiful. They cater for the older generation, which is great, but entertainment could have been a little more in times and music in the bars pool areas could have had more upbeat music, not so much swing etc. Tours not very organised with over booking and they need to add more times on the stops for people with walking problems, missed alot because of it. Although a few things they can improve on it was a great 3 week trip very relaxing and enjoyable 😊😍

A truly memorable experience…

A truly memorable experience visiting many places which I have always wanted to go to, such as Istanbul and Cyprus. At a month long it was our longest cruise ever. As always the staff on Olsen ships are friendly and charming; ever ready to help. The food in the restaurants was lovely. The speakers on this cruise were really excellent. However, the performances by the ship's show company were not up to the usual standard and when the Synergie musical group played in the Observatory the volume, particularly of the singer, was far too loud.

River Cities of France and Portugal

A thoroughly enjoyable cruise on board Balmoral. The entertainment was excellent, the food and service were good, the staff were so friendly and helpful. We chose to sail on this cruise because of the ports of call, and we weren't disappointed

Cheerful, friendly, helpful crew await you

Warm welcome on arrival at the port and on the ship. Crew always helpful and friendly. Clean cabins and also throughout the ship. The food is good and plenty of variety. It helps if you take part in the activities where you meet and chat with different guests. Speakers and Showtime are enjoyable. If you need a quiet time to read and relax there are plenty of areas. Looking forward to my next cruise in 6 weeks time. Bon Voyage.

Olsan cruises are great

Nothing in particular, as Fred Olsen cruises are always great. The ships are small which makes the handling of passengers very easy and the atmosphere on board quiet and relaxing, and suits young middle age upwards. The food is always first class and served at table very well. Ships are very clean and tidy

I have travelled with you approximately…15 timesj

I have travelled with you approximately 15 times. I prefer the smaller ships because I travel alone. You have dance hosts and my evening entertainment is being able to dance. I am disappointed that formal evenings ad smart casual doesn’t now describe a great deal of the attire. The tours I went on were disappointing because the stops were only for 30 minutes and one could only buy a coffee ad use the WC no time to explore. The staff are still very god on the whole but I think the Phiopenoe were the best. John a waiter of mine for May years is still the most efficient.

Welcome feeling

As soon as we walked on to the ship we were made welcome, the staff are amazing, not just the entertainment team but all staff. We were a little disappointed not to stop at the Faro Islands as we were looking forward to this, I think as the captain knew of the industrial action taking place we could have been informed sooner. This has not put me off cruising and I can't wait for our next one.
