Ecoventura Letty

The Letty is one of the best full-service motor yachts in the Galápagos for value. This 20-passenger boat is a solid option with great service and comfortable accommodations. A trip on the Letty promises a 10 guest-per-guide ratio, as well as dinner with the captain. You get a choice between two seven-day itineraries, each including opportunities to snorkel, hike, and learn about the local wildlife from knowledgeable guides.

Ecoventura Origin

Passengers can choose between three itineraries, ranging from eight to 15 days and taking different routes around the Galápagos.

Lindblad Expeditions National Geographic Islander II

All cabins on the 48-passenger National Geographic Islander II have windows, and some even have private patios. The ship offers deck hammocks, Wi-Fi, and food made with ingredients sourced from farms in the Galápagos whenever possible. Itineraries range from seven to 12 days and include cultural experiences in addition to wildlife viewing and water sports.

Large Galápagos Ships

Galápagos National Park officials have set a maximum of 100 passengers per vessel, so these are some of the largest ships in the archipelago. Travelers may opt for a larger-capacity cruise ship for more space (such as bigger hallways and staircases for easier movement around the ship) and increased services like an onboard doctor. The downside of traveling on a large ship is the time it can take to complete transfers by zodiac from the boat to the islands. Also, some areas of the Galápagos may be off limits to larger ships.

The 96-passenger National Geographic Endeavour II has Wi-Fi, a doctor, SUP gear, a clear-bottom zodiac, a free digital photo kiosk with iMacs, and a spa. Like the Islander II, food brought from the mainland is carefully prepared and packaged to prevent the introduction of invasive species to the Galápagos Islands.

Celebrity Flora

The 100-passenger Celebrity Flora features all of the design elements, amenities, and services of its sibling ships and then some. It has two 1,288-square-foot penthouse suites (the largest in the Galápagos), naturalist-guided stargazing sessions, and outdoor cabanas that you can reserve for a unique glamping experience.

Silversea Silver Origin

The 100-passenger Silver Origin is an all-suite ship with accommodations up to 1,722 square feet, some with in-room espresso machines and mini-bars, private verandas, and butler service. Tips are included in the price. The ship also has a fitness center, a spa, a communal fire pit, and two restaurants. There are more than 100 cruise options, some lasting as long as 18 days.

These small boats have a unique hull design, like the dual parallel runners of a sled, that many believe makes catamarans more stable in the water.

Celebrity Xploration

The 16-passenger Celebrity Xploration is arguably the most luxurious catamaran in the Galápagos. Its eight suites and junior suites feature extras like binoculars, personal refrigerators, a pillow menu, and room service. My first cruise to the Galapagos: The good, the bad and the absolutely adorable

Editor's Note

I'm fresh off a Galapagos cruise , but you wouldn't know it. I have no sunburn to speak of, I wasn't eaten alive by mosquitoes (for once), and I'm not suffering the ill effects of jet lag because I didn't have to adjust to a large time difference. However, that doesn't mean the destination didn't leave a mark on me.

Before starting this adventure, I wasn't sure what to expect from a Galapagos trip. I'd seen photos from friends and fellow travel writers who had visited the islands. Still, pictures don't do justice to the varying hues of blue-footed booby feet, nor do they properly convey the stench of sea lion excrement that — in contrast to its producers — is decidedly not cute.

What awaited me were some of the quietest, most untouched islands I've ever been fortunate enough to visit. From turquoise water and friendly animals to sun that's another level of hot, here's what would draw me back to the Galapagos in a heartbeat, what might make me think twice about returning and, ultimately, why the pros outweigh the cons.

What I liked

The animals.

Last year, when I embarked on my first-ever expedition cruise to the Arctic , I thought the number of animals — polar bears, reindeer, whales — I saw was impressive. But the Arctic has nothing on the Galapagos when it comes to creature sightings. For me, the animals were the highlight of the trip.

Within five minutes of arriving at the dock on the island of Baltra, I spotted brightly colored crabs, a marine iguana and some sort of pinniped (unsure if it was a sea lion or a seal from a distance) before I even boarded my ship.

Throughout the rest of the journey, I saw 12 of what the cruise line — Hurtigruten Expeditions — refers to as the "big 15." They included flightless cormorants, blue-footed boobies, land and marine iguanas, Galapagos penguins, giant tortoises, Galapagos sea lions, Galapagos flamingos and even the elusive Galapagos hawk. I also saw plenty of others — fur seals, Sally Lightfoot crabs, great blue herons — that weren't on the list.

The authenticity

Cruise ships that sail the Galapagos must adhere to strict rules, including one that states a certain percentage of the crew must be from Ecuador. Another requires that travelers be accompanied by official guides, certified through the Galapagos National Park system, when they visit uninhabited areas.

Because of those regulations, passengers can interact closely with locals who know the area better than anyone else.

If you have a question about the local foods served on board — think ceviche, plantains and other delicious specialties — the waiters quickly jump in with answers. Off the ship, guides can tell you anything you want to know about the local flora and fauna. Their passion for what they do is both evident and contagious. (Never before have I taken such an interest in birds.)

The welcoming, no-nonsense nature of the people who live in the few populated areas of the Galapagos is another endearing trait. During my trip, I visited several local shops and businesses where the owners were eager to show off their work.

One of the most notable was Trapiche Ecological — a remote farm on the inhabited island of Santa Cruz — which produces chocolate, coffee, brown sugar and moonshine made from sugarcane. The owners showed me and others around with hospitality that I'd be hard-pressed to find elsewhere.

The chocolate

There's something about Ecuadorian chocolate that makes all other chocolate seem inferior. The authentic stuff is made by hand with ingredients that you'd never find on a Hershey's label, and it's some of the best you could ever eat.

A visit to a chocolate maker is both educational and tasty. I learned about the growing and harvesting of cocoa beans as well as how they're crushed into nibs and powder (which are used in everything from edible bars to cocoa butter).

On my visit, I saw how those fancy flavored chocolates you find in gift boxes are made. It's an interesting process that involves several layers of chocolate that's skillfully melted, mixed, layered into trays and chilled to create tiny, edible works of art. I couldn't resist coming home with several bars.

What I didn't care for

The climate.

Given the Galapagos' location near the equator, I knew the sun would be intense. However, it's one thing to know about the intensity and another thing entirely to experience it.

Temperatures for my February sailing were in the high 70s to mid-80s, but the sun made things feel much hotter. I would have been toast without protective clothing and sunscreen with a high SPF.

Between the intensity of the rays, the amount of zinc needed to protect my skin and the lack of shade on the islands, I was constantly sweaty and sticky — and the humidity didn't help matters. I understand that the climate of the Galapagos is essential for the well-being of the many animals that call it home. Still, it was one of my least favorite qualities of the region.

If you're considering a Galapagos cruise, you should know that it's unlikely to meet your needs if your goal is to relax.

On my voyage, we had two to three excursions per day, and most places we visited were outdoors. That meant we were out in the blazing sun for hours. The combination of heat and active pursuits — snorkeling, kayaking, hiking — left me feeling exhausted by day two.

Understandably, the Galapagos is a bucket-list destination, which means most people don't travel there to sit around on the ship while the region's phenomenal scenery passes them by. With that in mind, many ships based in the area feature bare-bones amenities. The vessels do not boast onboard spas, passenger cabins do not include TVs, and no onboard activities are scheduled during the day.

It's assumed that most, if not all, passengers will participate in each of the excursions. The pace can be enough to leave you needing a vacation after your vacation.

Going to the Galapagos, I had one goal: find the blue-footed boobies. Blue is an uncommon color on animals, so something about those cerulean gams appeals to me. To my delight, I encountered the birds on two different occasions. But the first time, it wasn't their feet that caught my attention. It was the stench.

I had joined a small group of fellow passengers on a scenic sail around Isabela Island. As our inflatable boat approached a rock cliff, we saw marine iguanas sunning themselves and dozens of boobies preening between mating dances. I couldn't yet see their feet, but a sharp smell hit my nostrils like a slap in the face.

As we neared, the coloring of their feet became more evident, but so did the white hue that adorned the rocks — bird excrement. I know it's natural, but I wasn't expecting such pretty animals to smell so un pretty.

I had a similar experience during a landing on Fernandina Island, where we were surrounded by curious sea lions. They, too, smelled like the back end of a seafood processing plant.

I realize this is a petty complaint in a place as stunning as the Galapagos, but it's worth noting since it caught me and some of my fellow cruisers off guard.

What surprised me

The serenity.

With roughly 97% of the Galapagos preserved as a national park, I was expecting the islands to be wild, and I was right. But what I wasn't expecting was the quiet. It wasn't complete silence but rather a calm that teemed with sounds not normally present in my daily life.

You don't hear cell phone text alerts or traffic in the Galapagos. Instead, you hear the soft, wet sounds of marine iguanas expelling the salt water they've ingested while feeding, the gentle swish of waves rolling up onto the shoreline and the unmistakable barking of sea lions as they communicate with one another.

It's a strange kind of din that reminded me how busy nature is, even when humans feel like there isn't much happening.

The differences between islands

I was surprised to discover how different the islands in the western Galapagos were from each other. Some were inhabited; most weren't. Some were rocky, devoid of vegetation and provided no place for us to land, necessitating scenic sailing only. Others offered welcoming beaches with soft sand. Some islands were home to colorful flowers and lush vegetation and were well suited to grow coffee, cocoa beans and sugarcane.

The wildlife was just as varied. Some islands are home to giant tortoises, while others house blue-footed boobies, Galapagos penguins and flightless cormorants. Still, others were packed with marine iguanas, Sally Lightfoot crabs and sea lions, all coexisting harmoniously.

I was surprised to learn how the local iguanas and some of the islands' birds assist one another. The birds pick ticks off the iguanas; the birds get a meal, and the iguanas stay free of pests. When a bird has cleaned off all of the ticks, it poops on the iguana, leaving a mark, so other birds know to look elsewhere for food.

At the start of the cruise, I was concerned that the daily outings would become repetitive. I quickly discovered that, although the activities are similar, you see such different things that no two excursions are alike.

The rule differences

Expedition cruises are known for taking passengers to remote once-in-a-lifetime destinations. Because expedition ships sail to regions that are often protected, it makes sense that there are rules in place to protect both travelers and the local plants and wildlife native to the areas.

All luggage is thoroughly scanned and sniffed by dogs at the Baltra airport to prevent people from sneaking in contraband — think fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds that aren't native to the Galapagos. However, no one inspected our footwear once we boarded the ship to prevent the transfer of foreign entities between locations where the local ecosystem could be harmed. (We did have to hose off our shoes each time we came back on board.) This surprised me as the practice is common on Arctic and Antarctic expeditions.

Protected areas often have rules about how close passengers can be to wildlife. That makes sense in places like the Arctic, where polar bears are a real threat. What blew my mind in the Galapagos was that the animals aren't used to predators, so they generally aren't scared of humans. They definitely didn't respect the cruise line's "stay at least 6 feet away" rule.

Their chill attitudes, mixed with curiosity, meant I frequently had to move away from animals that were coming too close to me rather than the other way around.

The post office

One of the cutest aspects of my cruise was the makeshift "post office" on Floreana Island in what is now known as Post Office Bay.

Little more than a wooden barrel with a door, this post office requires no stamps and provides a place for visitors to leave postcards. The idea is that, after you write and address your postcards and put them in the provided Zip-Loc bag, you look through the ones already in there to see if any are addressed to a location near your home. If so, take them with you and hand-deliver them to the recipients.

I left a postcard addressed to myself, just to see if it worked. It showed up in my mailbox about two weeks later — with a stamp on it. Someone misunderstood the assignment and, instead of delivering it in person, slapped postage on it and dropped it in an actual mailbox somewhere else. It was nice to receive the postcard, and the sender's intentions were kind, but I was slightly disappointed not to meet a fellow Galapagos traveler.

Bottom line

Although a Galapagos cruise isn't necessarily the best choice for relaxation, it's high on many travelers' bucket lists — for a good reason. No, you can't pull up a beach chair, order a cocktail or even find a bathroom on most of the islands, but that only adds to the unspoiled splendor.

Teal water crashes into rocky shorelines dotted with fine, white sand, and everything exists in a delicate balance. The largely undeveloped region is replete with animals you can't see anywhere else; you'll be amazed to learn how the creatures have adapted to survive in the region's inhospitable climate.

A visit to the Galapagos has its pros and cons, but from my experience, the former far outweighs the latter.

The Galapagos is all time destination, and nature-loving visitors should expect to be amazed by the natural world every calendar month. Nevertheless, you will find 2 most important “seasons,” both of which have their draws and drawbacks.

High season, when tourists often drive occupancy levels to the maximum, is known June through September and mid-December through mid-January. From June until November, the Humboldt Current creates colder, water and chillier land conditions. Regular peaks are generally around 80 degrees. Wind and seas are often a little bit rougher. Skies are often overcast, but rain is uncommon. The changes in water attracts fish and sea birds, making this an excellent period to snorkel. Given the cooler water temps — sometimes in the low 60s– utilizing a wet suit is a wise move for swimmers aiming to keep in the ocean for a longer time. This is also the mating season for the blue-footed boobies.

December through May, the atmosphere and water conditions are typically hotter, in the high 80’s, and seas are more calm. Light rain falls for a while each day, but the humidity is balanced with potent sun rays. Sun-lovers may be tested in February, when tropical heating scorches the lava. Land vegetation blows up, with flowers coming into bloom. Many varieties of birds mate during this time period, and sea turtle nesting can also happen.

El Nino, a climate phenomenon, can upend weather-related forecasts, bringing a tropical feel to the environment at unanticipated periods.

The most popular months for take a trip In Galapagos cruises are between June and August and again from the middle of December to January. Plan ahead in the event that you wish to see during the high season. Visiting outside of those periods will still provide lots of experiences and wildlife experiences, but prices may be lower with fewer other tourists around.

With minimal variation in air and water temperatures throughout the entire year, and numerous species that are not migratory, an Isabela Island cruise is a fantastic adventure at any moment. Generally, but the waters are better between January and March, which makes this a perfect time for avid snorkeling enthusiasts. The driest months are typically between August and December, perfect for beach lovers.

An expedition to the Galapagos is without a doubt the trip of a lifetime. But as your departure day gets closer and your excitement grows, it’s important to be properly prepared.

IMPORTANT TRAVEL INFORMATION (7-NIGHT CRUISE BOOKINGS)

The 7-night cruise-only vacation does not include any pre-cruise or post cruise components. While the sailing is all-inclusive, there are several steps you must take as an independent traveler to Baltra, Galapagos. 

 The 10-night, 11-night and 16-night packages include all the logistics listed below. If you have a current 7-night booking and would like to upgrade to a package that includes all the steps outlined below, and more, please contact your travel agent or call Celebrity Cruises at 1-888-751-9303.

Flight Reminders & Important Information:

• Arrive in mainland Ecuador with ample time to connect to Baltra, Galapagos for embarkation. In most instances, guests will need to arrive in Ecuador at least one day prior to their flight to Baltra, Galapagos.
• All flights to the Galapagos Islands must undergo a mandatory luggage inspection prior to check-in at the airport, directly with the airline.
• Guests must arrive in the Baltra Airport prior to 12:00pm Galapagos time on embarkation day, where they will be met by Celebrity Cruises Guides.
• Embarkation will begin once package guests arrive and clear migration in Galapagos airport (approximately 12:00pm, local time).
• Guides will escort the guests to their bus and then onto a small pier where Celebrity tenders will transport them to the ship and begin the embarkation process.
• Guests must obtain a Galapagos National Park entrance card ($200 per person) at the National Park Desk at the outbound airport. The fees will be reimbursed onboard the ship upon embarkation.
• Guest must obtain a Traffic Control Card ($20 per person) at the airport prior to departure. The fees will be reimbursed onboard the ship upon embarkation. Guests can pre-register for their Traffic Control Card online, but need to go the counter at the airport, present passport and return flight in order to obtain the card: https://www.gobiernogalapagos.gob.ec/para-ingresar-a-la-provincia-de-galapagos/.
• For departure flights , anything departing the Galapagos after 10:00 am local time is recommended.
• Flights by Celebrity is not available for 7-night cruise-only vacations.
• The only ground transfers included are between the Baltra airport and the embarkation/disembarkation pier. NO other transfers are included.
• There is no traditional port/embarkation pier in Baltra. Ships do not come pier-side. All transportation from land to ship is done via tenders, including embarkation and disembarkation.
• Guests are responsible for their own hotel accommodations pre and post cruise.

Where are The Galapagos Islands?

The Galapagos Islands (or Archipelago de Colon) is a Province of Ecuador located 600 miles (800 kilometers) west of the Ecuadorian coast. The island chain lies directly on the equator.

What is included in the 7-Night Cruise Itineraries?

• Voyage aboard one of the Celebrity vessels in Galapagos, as indicated in the applicable itinerary
• Accommodation in staterooms with air conditioning, private bathroom and showers, and refrigerators with complimentary bottled water
• All meals and complimentary beverages on board the vessel including select wines, sparkling wines, spirits, soft drinks, bottled water, coffee and teas
• Complimentary room service

• Onboard entertainment, including programs or lectures by onboard Galapagos National Park certified naturalists or our experienced Celebrity staff

What is included in the 10-Night or longer packages?

All 10, 11, and 16 night packages include the following 2-night pre-cruise stay in Quito, Ecuador:

• Transfers from the Quito Airport to your hotel and back to the airport
• Two nights in a shared double occupancy room at a hotel in Quito, Ecuador, prior to your flight to Baltra
• Meals during the pre-land portion of the package in Quito, including all meals on Saturday, and Sunday breakfast pre-cruise
• A guided tour of Quito (full day)
• Air transportation (coach class on either scheduled or charter service) from Quito, Ecuador to Baltra
• Transfers from the airport in Baltra to the ship
• 7-night Galapagos cruise aboard one of the Celebrity ships in Galapagos as indicated in the applicable itinerary (See above description for the inclusion of the 7-night cruises)
• All gratuities

Post-Cruise Arrangements for the 10 and 11 night packages:

• Transfers from your Celebrity vessel to the airport in Baltra
• Air transportation (coach class on either scheduled or charter service) from Baltra to Quito
• Transfers from the Quito Airport to your hotel
• One night (two nights if you purchase the 11-night voyage) at a hotel (dinner and full breakfast are included)
• Afternoon shopping tour to local craft market, time permitting
• Transfer from your hotel to the Quito Airport

Post cruise arrangements for the 16-Night package (Machu Picchu extension):

What is not included in the 10-Night or longer packages?

• Air transportation to/from Quito, Ecuador, and to Quito from Peru
• Any additional food or beverages obtained outside of the package specifications
• Purchases of souvenirs, gifts and other personal items on board or ashore
• Personal services such as spa, laundry, and telecommunication charges
• Baggage, travel cancellation and personal insurance

Are there any luggage restrictions?

The air carriers flying between Quito and Baltra typically limit the amount of luggage per guest to one checked piece (not to exceed 44 lbs.) and a small carry-on bag (not to exceed 15 lbs.). Guests may bring a reasonable amount of clothing and personal effects on board the vessels. However, for guests’ comfort and convenience, it is recommended that they limit the number of items they take.

What documents do I need to sail?

Each guest is required by Ecuadorian law to have a valid passport with at least six months validity from the departure date from Ecuador. Guests who do not possess the proper documentation may be prevented from boarding their flight or ship, or from debarking or entering a country, and may be subject to fines.

Also, it is important that the name on the reservation be exactly as it is stated on the passport or other official citizenship document. If the guest’s name has changed since the document was issued (i.e. marriage/divorce), it is required that the document be updated with the new name or provide official supporting document(s) of the name change. Otherwise, it may result in delay or possible denial of boarding.

7-night cruise only guests must obtain a Galapagos National Park entrance card ($200 per person) at the National Park Desk at the outbound airport. The fees will be reimbursed onboard the ship upon embarkation. Celebrity Cruises obtains this for all package guests (10, 11, 16 night packages).

7-night cruise guests must obtain a Traffic Control Card ($20 per person) at the airport prior to departure. The fees will be reimbursed onboard the ship upon embarkation. Ecuador requires that all guests must purchase travel protection that includes medical and evacuation coverage prior to visiting the Galapagos. For more information about CruiseCare, please contact your travel agent or Celebrity Cruises for more information.

Are there any medical documents necessary or restrictions before sailing?

All guests must ensure they are medically fit for travel. As such, we remind you to check with your physician at least 4 to 6 weeks before sailing to make sure you are up to date with any required immunizations or vaccines you may need to ensure you will be permitted to visit each of the exciting destinations and tours on your itinerary. At this time, no inoculations are required for US, Canadian, and UK citizens. Are there accommodations for persons with special medical needs on board the ships and throughout the Galapagos experience?

Please note the ability to accommodate guests with special needs aboard the vessels in the Galapagos Islands is limited. The ships do not have elevators or accessible staterooms. Also, there is very little wheelchair accessibility on the Galapagos Islands, and service animals are not permitted in the Galapagos National Park. During a Galapagos journey, guests will need to ascend or descend steps into a motor coach, use stairs, walk and/or climb over uneven ground for extended distances and get on and off inflatable Zodiac tenders. In addition, the land portion of these vacations, including Quito and Galapagos in Ecuador, as well as Lima, Cuzco and Machu Picchu in Peru are not suited to persons who are wheelchair users. Celebrity welcomes guests with disabilities and special needs, and we will provide reasonable and appropriate assistance. Guests requiring assistance should consider their specific needs when making a Galapagos vacation decision. While we do not require information about the extent of your specific situation, the more information you can share with us about your specific needs, the better we are able to assist you. We encourage you to notify us of your needs at time of booking but no later than 30 days prior to sailing.

Are there shops on board?

Yes, there are small shops with limited expedition gear as well as some souvenirs. In addition, there is a limited quantity of sunscreen and other sundries available.

What is the currency in Ecuador and Peru?

The country of Ecuador uses the US dollar. Peru’s currency is the Sol.

What does one pack when visiting some of the most unique, unspoiled islands in the world?

Daytime and Shore Excursions:

• Neutral-colored clothing is advised due to possible presence of insects.
• Lightweight rain jacket or windbreaker.
• A small backpack to carry water and other essentials.
• A hat, sunglasses, sunblock, and insect repellent.
• A re-sealable plastic bag to prevent water damage to cameras and other items of that nature.
• If you bring a digital camera, make sure to pack plenty of memory cards.
• The weather in these ports of call can be unpredictable, so we recommend layers. During the warmer months (February through June) it can be very hot on shore excursions.
• Lightweight shorts and pants as well as both long-and short-sleeve shirts.
• A jacket or sweatshirt will come in handy for cooler days and evenings.
• Sturdy, comfortable walking shoes or lightweight hiking boots, thick socks, swimsuit, and waterproof sandals or wet/dry water shoes for the beach and wet landings. Some of the island trails require walking on rocks, so be sure to have support and good tread on walking shoes.
• As you pack evening clothes, remember that there is no need for formal attire aboard any of our Celebrity Galapagos vessels.
• For women, we recommend resort casual attire (pants, skirts or even casual dresses).
• For men, we recommend resort casual attire (comfortable shirts and pants).

What is the weather like in The Galapagos Islands?

Located on the equator, the Galapagos Islands are subject to oceanic currents that influence temperatures on the archipelago. The weather is pleasant at any time of the year, making it a year-round cruise destination.

There are two seasons in the Galapagos: The dry, or garua, season runs from July to December. “Garua” refers to the fog and mist that commonly hangs on the higher elevations during this season. The hot or wet season lasts from January through June, with March and April generally being the wettest months.

What is the onboard Smoking Policy?

What protection is provided when I purchase flights through Flights by Celebrity?

Is cancellation coverage available?

Do you use certified guides and naturalists?

We definitely do! We have carefully selected the most qualified certified naturalist guides from the Galápagos National Park Service. They are fully trained to lead Celebrity Cruises expeditions to the destination and are focused on giving you premium service and the most memorable experience, both on and off the ship.

The Naturalist guides will keep you informed about the flora and fauna that you will encounter on your expedition. They are there for you, so be prepared to ask questions and learn as much as you can about all the amazing species you’ll encounter. Your Naturalist guide will also provide instructions on how to maintain this very sensitive environment.

How many visitors travel to The Galapagos each year?

Currently, about 60,000 people from all over the world visit the Galapagos each year. The Ecuadorian government has established a limit of 90,000 visitors per year in order to preserve Galapagos ecosystem. So now is a great time to be among the relatively few to visit this extraordinary destination.

What time zone is The Galapagos in?

Ecuador is in the Eastern Time zone (GMT-5 in the mainland). Daylight savings time is not observed. Galapagos is one hour behind mainland Ecuador.

How do we get from the ship to the shore?

The Celebrity vessels will anchor offshore of each landing site. Passengers are taken to the landing points in small boats called zodiacs or locally termed “pangas”. The landings can be ‘wet’ meaning guests must step into water anywhere from your ankles to your knees and wade to shore. Other landings are ‘dry’ where guests step from the zodiac directly to the shore. Your Celebrity naturalist guide and zodiac driver will assist each guest to maintain steadiness.

Will there be rough seas or bad weather?

If you are prone to motion sickness, we recommend you reach out to your doctor. You may find that motion sickness medications convenient to bring. Most time is spent in the calm protected waters of coves in and around the islands where the waters are more still. It is a good practice to bring motion sickness medication so you are prepared for an unexpected challenge onboard.

What kind of animals will I encounter on my Galapagos Expedition?

As a Celebrity Galapagos expedition guest you are very likely to see an abundance of wildlife including sightings of the marine iguanas, penguins, sea lions, blue-footed boobies, the giant tortoise (at the Charles Darwin Research Station), and many more. No matter what time of year you visit, you’ll get up close and personal with the wildlife of the Galapagos. Will Laundry Service be available onboard?

What is the difference between the itineraries?

The Galapagos Islands are regulated by the Galapagos National Park. All of our itineraries are dictated by the park. Every time we renew our permits to sail in the Galapagos that comes with two alternating itineraries for each ship as an environmental mandate. The park decides where we will be going, how long we will stay at each island and what activities or shore excursions we are allowed to partake in. The itineraries are always subject to change based on the parks decisions but mostly stay the same. The most important thing for you to know is that the Galapagos Islands must be seen as a whole destination rather than where they will be in the morning versus the afternoon. All the itineraries in our program are very well balanced and will offer history, flora and fauna they won’t experience anywhere else. Among other animals, they will see blue footed boobies, sea lions, sea turtles and giant tortoises on all itineraries. You will have a fulfilling and memorable experience regardless of the loop you select.

How can I share comments or feedback regarding my cruise experience with you?

“River cruising is the beneficiary of a larger travel trend in which luxury travelers are looking to do nothing,” Daniel Levine, director of New York consultancy Avant-Guide Institute , tells Robb Report . “By that, I mean they can visit multiple ports and soak up plenty of culture and history, all without changing hotels.”

This new fleet of river cruisers can access inland cities and remote stretches of countryside that are inaccessible to large oceangoing vessels. Plus, Levine says, there’s an added advantage to river travel: no seasickness.

One leader of the new set of purpose-built riverboats is Aqua Expeditions , the luxury river cruise operator whose first vessel, Aria Amazon , set sail on the Peruvian Amazon in 2011. Over a decade later, the fleet has grown to three river ships, none with more than 20 suites, cruising both the Amazon and the Mekong River in Vietnam and Cambodia, along with two oceangoing yachts in the Galapagos and Eastern Indonesia. 

“On my river ships, 30 percent of departures are now private buyouts, similar to traditional charters,” says founder Francesco Galli Zugaro. These clients, mainly multigenerational family groups or large gatherings of friends, are people who tend to vacation on yachts rather than the typical cruise ship crowd. Most of them have come to the riverboats, says Galli Zugaro, after chartering one of Aqua Expeditions’ two yachts.

The desire for off-the-beaten-track travel is fueling this new interest in riverboat charters, says Frédéric Crétin, a Monaco-based charter broker at superyacht brokerage Camper & Nicholsons . “We’ve had a surge in enquiries for the Peruvian Amazon, especially with Americans since it’s not too far from home,” says Crétin, who manages whole-boat bookings for the Aqua Expeditions fleet.

Heritage Line operates five traditionally styled ships along the upper and lower Mekong River and in Vietnam’s Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay. “Our vessels, particularly our small-ship sailing charters on Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay, have seen an increase in private stays,” says CEO John Tue Nguyen. “We now average 12 to 15 charters annually, including families, multi-generational bookings and VIP travelers.”

In Egypt, a gap in the market to showcase the country’s temples in a private, exclusive way, was behind the launch of the Nile River’s first luxury charter yacht in 2022, Berge . “Our clients are mostly royal families, politicians, celebrities, and athletes,” says Armen Kazazian of Kazazian Cruises , the yacht’s owner. “They don’t want to share the Egypt experience with hundreds of other people.”

The 180-foot, nine-cabin vessel has recently been joined by a sistership, the 196-foot, nine-cabin Arax . True to superyacht protocol, charters are secured with an official MYBA The Worldwide Yachting Association contract, and in the lead-up to the charter, a preference form is sent out to gather information on dietary preferences and daily routines to ensure everything is ready for your arrival. 

The differences also include having no water toys as one would on a conventional yacht charter. “But we overcome that with the destination and experiences, such as candlelit dinners on private islands,” says Kazazian. Maybe. But being restricted to a single route on a river is also fundamentally different than port-hopping along the Med or Caribbean.

Inland cruising has multiple benefits, insists Matthew Shollar of Transcend Cruises , Europe’s first charter-only, river-cruise company. “You’re not just in coastal locations and you can take your whole group off the boat to a spa, or go biking, or shopping,” Shollar says. “And a riverboat always docks close to your destination.”

In September 2025, the company’s first ship, the 443-foot Transcend , will launch, with a second identical vessel following in early 2026. Penned by Tillberg Design of Sweden, both are built to European riverboat specs but draw inspiration from superyachts for style and amenities, including a 2,600-square-foot indoor/outdoor fitness area that includes a gym, spa, and guest wellness facility. 

“The single most expensive piece of equipment on board is a hot tip from superyachts, a 144-inch C Seed unfolding television,” continues Shollar. “It’s a worthwhile investment for guests to enjoy everything from silent discos to movie nights on the sun deck.”

The company soft-launched Transcend Advance this summer to better examine the private market’s potential. It took over a five-star vessel from Riverside Luxury Cruises. One client, celebrating his 60th birthday party, had never considered a riverboat charter, but was lured by being able to host many more guests. “We designed a six-day itinerary that was flexible and unique,” says Kimberly Daley, Transcend’s chief revenue officer. “It enabled him and his friends to see chartering in a whole new way.”

Transcend will sail “the highest-demand European waterways,” including the Rhine, Danube, and Moselle, offering waterside access to historic cities like Trier, Budapest, and Belgrade.

But a second collection of smaller luxury barges is carrying charter to canals and smaller waterways. Both Belmond’s 128-foot Coquelicot and European Waterways’ Kir Royale launched in France’s Champagne region this year, with a max capacity of six and eight guests, respectively, and the possibility of whole-boat bookings. This combination of space, intimacy, pastoral views and access to exceptional vineyards can’t be replicated on oceangoing yachts.

While luxury riverboats are still a small niche compared to the larger world of superyacht charters, they offer another kind of cruising experience, one that combines slow-moving water with a relaxed lifestyle in some of the most scenic destinations on the planet.
