What to Expect

Edinburgh’s original five-star history and ghost tour company. Groups are limited to a maximum of 30 people, with tours running every day and in all weather. With each tour leaving from the Mercat Cross on the Royal Mile in the heart of the city.

The evening begins with a stroll through the dark closes and wynds of Old Town Edinburgh, before descending into the haunted Blair Street Underground Vaults. Finally, we’ll retire to a candlelit cellar for a dram of Scotch whisky and an intimate evening of ghostly storytelling.

The air filled with cries and taunts, and a crowd of thousands baying for the blood of two men. Take your place as a member of the “Edinburgh mob”, which once surged in riot past the Mercat Cross (our meeting point for the evening).

Hear grisly tales of witchcraft, torture and restless spirits as you venture down medieval closes and descend into the haunted Blair Street Underground Vaults of Edinburgh on this ghost tour. Your cloaked Storyteller will lead you through the dimly lit caverns, recounting stories that you would swear are too horrific to be true – and yet, they all are.

As night thickens, we’ll gather together in Megget’s cellar for a whisky – or a glass of locally-made lager or soft drink if you’re not fond of a dram. In the warmth of candlelight, your Storyteller will conjure more tales of Edinburgh’s ghoulish past, and the tortured souls that stalk the city’s streets.

Edinburgh Castle

Ghosts and ghouls of Edinburgh's Old Town tour

A city as old as Edinburgh is bound to have some secrets and this two-hour evening tour explores some of its darkest and most atmospheric corners.

The medieval Old Town is the venue, where shadowy, narrow closes and wynds (Scottish terms for alleyways and small lanes) lead off the busy Royal Mile, a cobbled street that runs from Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

These hidden lanes are the location of many tales of mystery, intrigue, blood, guts and gore, all of them true as your cloaked guide will tell you as they lead you into underground caverns, site of much-documented paranormal activity.

The shared tour begins in the late evening at Mercat Cross, High Street, where you'll meet your costumed guide, a student actor with a penchant for lively storytelling. Walk through the darkest, most atmospheric parts of Edinburgh’s Old Town on an interactive walking tour that reveals the tales of murderers, cannibals, body snatchers, baying mobs and restless spirits.

Take your place as one of the rioting ‘Edinburgh mob’ and hear about how this ruthless group snatched two men from their cells and lynched them on a dyer's pole. Along the way your guide will recite and enact dramatic and grisly stories of witchcraft and torture, secret medical experiments and hidden crimes.

As the walk progresses, venture down into the Blair Street underground vaults, one of Edinburgh's most renowned supernatural sites. The vaults are the myriad spaces below the arches of South Bridge, a 19-arch viaduct completed in 1788 and largely enclosed behind tenement buildings.

The arches were then divided up into about 120 vaults which were originally used as businesses but their hidden nature soon gave them a reputation for illicit goings-on. Smugglers, criminals and those living on the edge of society soon took refuge here and today they are as cold, damp and dark as they would have been in their heyday.

Between the crumbling brick walls, hear about the unusual lives of those who lived and worked here in the maze of tunnels and caverns. It's a chilling place, brought to life by your guide and the possible presence of some of the many famous ghosts that are said to haunt the vaults.

After braving the Blair Street underground vaults, retire to a candlelit cellar nearby for more storytelling, accompanied by a dram of whisky before being released back into the night.

A Mercat Tours Storyteller shows a tour group into a room in the Blair Street Underground Vaults.

Blair Street Underground Vaults, Edinburgh

Mercat Tours - Ghostly Underground

A daytime walking tour of Edinburgh’s haunted vaults – and we’re the only people with access. This tour is perfect for a peek into the city’s ghostly past because things don’t only go bump in the night.

The true history of the Blair Street Underground Vaults is terrifying enough – so abandon thoughts of manufactured frights and make-believe. The skill is in the storytelling: the vaults witnessed the deeds of mischief-makers and murderers, vagrants, and torturers. It’s one of Edinburgh’s most haunted sites, where restless spirits still tread.

Want to see Edinburgh’s haunted vaults? Explore them exclusively with Mercat Tours.

First, you’ll follow your cloaked Mercat guide through the shadowy closes of Edinburgh’s Old Town. These are dark streets untouched by daylight, filled with a strange silence, their damp walls carrying only the faintest echo of the crowds on the high street you’ve left behind.

With the scene set, you’ll descend into the depths of the city – and listen in horror to its dark and sinister side. Torture. Murder. Hangings. From body snatchers to the real-life Jekyll and Hyde, you’ll be gripped by the true tales that lie hidden beneath Edinburgh’s streets.

Watch out for a cold breath on the back of the neck, a whisper, a flicker – then silence. It’s all the more chilling for being absolutely real: there are no tricks or jump scares on our ghost tours.

Edinburgh Ghost Tours Graveyard

Edinburgh is said to be one of the world’s most haunted cities.

Its mist-laden hills, cobbled streets, ancient buildings and subterranean vaults are a wonderful place to explore – during the day or after dark.

And as you explore and learn more of the fascinating and at times gruesome history of this place, you can also keep your eyes peeled for any ghostly visitors that might still haunt the Old Town.

You could definitely simply take matters into your own hands, and explore areas of the city where a haunting might occur. But to gain the most from visiting these spooky locations, you might want to consider taking one of these 5 Edinburgh ghost tours:

5. Extreme Paranormal Underground Ghost Tour

5 edinburgh ghost tours you won’t want to miss, 1. small group edinburgh underground vaults and graveyard ghost tour.

This historically fascinating ghost-hunting tour will take you to two of the city’s most haunted locations – the shadow-shrouded subterranean world of Blair Street, and Canongate Kirkyard.

  • Meeting Point: Mercat Cross High St, Edinburgh EH1 1RF, UK ( open in google maps )
  • Duration: 75 minutes
  • Cost: currently about $34 ( check current pricing here )
  • Free Cancellation: Yes!
  • Where to Book: Book on Viator.com (here )
  • Other: Adults-only (18+)

Blair Street Underground Vaults is a labyrinthine network of chambers below the South Bridge with a storied and at times horrific past. This is the place for an Edinburgh underground tour.

Here, in 19 arches below the bridge, workshops, storage spaces and drinking establishments were abandoned and the seedy underbelly of the city moved in.

Brothels, gambling dens and moonshine distilleries were housed here, and it is believed that body-snatchers even used the dark spaces to store the corpses they stole.

The rooms also housed some 2,000-3,000 of the city’s poorest residents – conditions were squalid and disease ran rife – until the city sealed off the vaults and they remained forgotten until the 1980s.

After touring these eerie vaults you will weave your way to Canongate Kirkyard – a huge cemetery where you can keep your eyes peeled for spectres and ghouls wondering through the darkness.

As you explore these two locations your guide will regale you with a commentary filled with gruesome tales of cannibalism, torture and witchcraft and you can find the final resting places – or not – of a number of famous Scots.

2. Terror Walking Tour in Edinburgh

This Edinburgh Walking Tour is one of the best ghost tours in the city! And the most popular on our list .

  • Meeting Point: Tourist information police box across the road from Brodie’s tavern
  • Where to Book: Viator.com

Starting at the tourist information police box across the road from Brodie’s tavern, this terrifying adults-only tour will take you on a 75 minute tour of Edinburgh’s Old Town after dark, culminating in a visit to the gruesome Torture museum, for which entry is included in the price.

As on the tour above you will enter the notorious city vaults, see St Giles cathedral by night, and hear of the Tolbooth Prison and the troubled souls who were held there, with your professional guide.

The Old Tolbooth was a mediaeval structure that has served a number of different purposes over the centuries. It was the main jail here where not only incarceration but also physical punishments and torture were routinely conducted, and from 1785, this was the site of public executions. The buildings were demolished in 1817 but who is to say whether or not some ghosts or ghouls may linger here on this site…

Then you will have the opportunity to enter the terrifying Torture Museum.

Is your stomach strong enough to handle the tales of brutal torture in times gone by and to learn how the devices you will see were used?

3. Ghost and Gore Walking Tour of Edinburgh

This popular Ghost and Gore Walking Tour is perfect if you are looking for an early evening tour that is a bit more family friendly then this is one of the Edinburgh ghost tours might be a fun option to consider.

  • Meeting Point: Outside the Witchery restaurant just before 7pm
  • Duration: 80 minutes
  • Cost: currently about $16 ( check current pricing here )
  • Where to Book: Book on Viator.com (here)

Light-hearted yet informative, this 80 minute walking tour of the historic Royal Mile is full of fun and frolics.

Meeting outside the Witchery restaurant just before 7pm, you will be guided by a former city cemetery director, mr Alexander Clapperton (deceased) and will meet a number of infamous apparitions along the way such as the mad monk of Cowgate, a witch called Agnes Fynnie, and bloody Highlander Rhuari McLeod. The tour includes a copy of ‘The Witchery Tales’ by Adam Lyal.

Enjoy a fiendishly funny outing that will be enjoyed by the whole family as you walk the cobbled streets and courtyards of Edinburgh’s old town and are jumped out at by a host of different characters (typically played by the same person).

4. Two Hour Ghost Tour

Back on the more serious side, this almost two hour long ghost tour starts and ends on High Street, Edinburgh. This is one of many Edinburgh walking tours that will allow you to explore the Old Town and learn more about its dark yet fascinating history.

Quick Info:

  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Cost: currently about $19 ( check current pricing here )
  • Meeting Point: 190 High Street, Edinburgh
  • Highlights: Edinburgh Old Town (after dark), High Street, Old Calton Burial Ground and more

Beginning at 6pm, it will lead you through Edinburgh’s Old Town where you can explore hidden closes and find out about the gruesome things that have gone on there over the centuries.

During this tour you will have the experienced narrative from your informative guide to help you navigate the history and wynds of this old part of the city.

You will also have the opportunity to visit Old Calton Burial Ground – where the Scottish philosopher David Hume as well as several other notable Scots are buried. Atop Calton Hill , to the north east of the city centre, this burial ground was opened in 1718 and offers not only ghost-watching opportunities but also panoramic views over the city.

Another option for adults who want to explore and go ghost hunting around the Old Town is this well-organised example, with stops in the Greyfriars cemetery as well as the underground vaults mentioned above.

If you are looking for an Edinburgh vaults tour with something a little extra this is one of many options to consider.

  • Meeting Point:
  • Cost: currently about $25 ( check the most up to date pricing here )
  • Highlights: Visit Edinburgh’s most haunted graveyard (after dark), underground vaults
  • Where to Book: Book on Getyourguide.com (here)

Burials have been taking place at Greyfriars Kirkyard since the late 16 th Century. A number of notable Edinburgh residents are buried there.

Greyfriars takes its name from a Franciscan friary which used to be on the site. The graveyard is best known for Greyfriar’s bobby, a loyal dog who guarded his master’s grave, sleeping there for 14 years.

This tour will take you to this haunted graveyard, then on through many wynds above the ground and the vaults below, in the presence of a theatrical and entertaining guide who will be dressed in appropriate costume for the evening.

Infamous Serial Killers

Edinburgh: Dark Secrets of the Old Town Ghost Walking Tour - Infamous Serial Killers

Among the most notorious serial killers in Edinburgh’s history were William Burke and William Hare.

In the 1820s, the duo preyed on the city’s poor , strangling their victims and selling the bodies to anatomists for dissection. Their grisly crimes shed light on the lucrative black market for corpses at the time, fueled by the need for cadavers in medical schools.

During the height of witch hunts in 16th and 17th century Scotland, hundreds were accused and executed , often on flimsy evidence . Many were subjected to torture and forced confessions before being burned at the stake.

These trials were fueled by widespread fear, superstition, and religious fanaticism. Victims ranged from midwives and healers to the mentally ill and socially marginalized.

The true toll of lives lost remains a haunting legacy that continues to haunt the ancient streets of Edinburgh.

Yvette Fielding has revealed she quit Most Haunted after her team were attacked by a ghost

But these days Yvette is most known for her role on paranormal series Most Haunted .

She's been at the helm of the long-running series since 2002 with her ghost-busting husband Karl Beattie.

However, Yvette threw in the towel live on air and quit Most Haunted after her team were left with bloody wounds during an investigation in Edinburgh.

Speaking to The Sun, the host revealed one member of the crew was rushed to hospital after being 'cut to the bone'.

Derek Acorah faked being possessed and tried to grope me, says Yvette Fielding

Yvette recalled: "We were in the room and the owner said 'whatever you do, don't stand in the middle of the stone circle'.

"It was because there was an old stone circle where 11 witches had come together and performed various rituals. Of course, three members of the team decided to provoke whatever was there and be a bit rude.

"While we were broadcasting on it, in front of the palace, one member screamed and shouted that his back was burnt. And I had to take his leather jacket off and you could see the blood coming through his t-shirt.

"And he's still scarred to this day. Carl was in the centre of the circle holding the camera. And he screamed out because he had three deep cuts in the back of his neck.

"The worst one was the sound guy who collapsed onto the floor because he had such a deep cut in the side of his leg, you could see the bone. And he had to go to A&E to get it stitched up."

Yvette was left so stunned by the ordeal that she resigned on air and didn't leave her house for weeks.

She added: "It's quite embarrassing because I actually resigned live on air because I just can't understand what's happened. And I saw it happen with my own eyes and it defied logic.

"And for the first time ever, I thought 'oh, my God, ghosts can actually harm you' and that was it.

"I was so frightened, I didn't sleep for weeks and was too scared to leave the house."

The presenter has released her latest book Most Haunted Castles, which recounts some of her spookiest experiences.

She's currently on tour, travelling across the country with her Most Haunted Live stage show.

Meanwhile, Yvette recently revealed how the BBC never apologised to her after she spoke out about the bullying she faced on the beloved series.

About this tour

Edinburgh ghost tours.

A fun and light-hearted daytime walking tour of the Blair Street Underground Vaults – Edinburgh’s most haunted vaults, which Mercat Tours has exclusive access to. This spooky Edinburgh ghost tour is the ideal way to peek into the city’s ghostly past, and remember… things don’t only go bump in the night!

The true history of the Blair Street Underground Vaults is terrifying enough – so abandon thoughts of manufactured frights and make-believe. The skill is in the storytelling: these vaults witnessed the deeds of mischief-makers and murderers, vagrants, and torturers. It’s one of Edinburgh’s most haunted sites, where restless spirits still tread to this day.

Underground vaults

Follow your cloaked Mercat Tours storyteller through the shadowy closes of Edinburgh’s Old Town. These dark and dreary streets are untouched by daylight, filled with a strange silence – their damp walls carrying only the faintest echo of the crowds on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.

With the scene set, you’ll descend into the depths of the city – and listen in horror to the dark and sinister events which took place over the years. Torture. Murder. Hangings. From body snatchers to real-life characters of the city, you’ll be gripped by the true tales that lie hidden beneath Edinburgh’s streets, in the underground vaults.

Perhaps you’ll experience a cold breath on the back of your neck, or a whisper, perhaps even a flicker – then silence. It’s all the more chilling for being absolutely real: there are no tricks or jump scares on our Edinburgh ghost tours.
