PGA Tour players learn how much loyalty is worth in new equity program

Players who stayed loyal to the PGA Tour amid lucrative recruitment by Saudi-funded LIV Golf are starting to find out how much that loyalty could be worth.
The PGA Tour on Wednesday began contacting the 193 players eligible for the $930 million from a “Player Equity Program” under the new PGA Tour Enterprises .
The bulk of that money — $750 million — went to 36 players based on their career performance, the last five years and how they fared in a recent program that measured their star power.
How much they received was not immediately known. Emails were going out Wednesday afternoon and Thursday informing players of what they would get. One person who saw a list of how the equity shares were doled out said the names had been redacted. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because many details of the program were not made public.
The Telegraph reported Tiger Woods was to receive $100 million in equity and Rory McIlroy could get $50 million, without saying how it came up with those numbers.
Commissioner Jay Monahan outlined the first-of-its-kind equity ownership program in a Feb. 7 memo to players, a week after Strategic Sports Group became a minority investor in the new commercial PGA Tour Enterprises.
The private equity group, a consortium of professional sports owners led by the Fenway Sports Group, made an initial investment of $1.5 billion that could be worth $3 billion. The tour is still negotiating with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia — the financial muscle behind the rival LIV Golf league — as an investor.
Any deal with PIF would most certainly increase the value of the equity shares.
Another person with knowledge of the Player Equity Program, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the dealings, said the equity money is not part of the SSG investment. That money was geared toward growth capital.
Golf.com received a series of informational videos on the Player Equity Program that was sent to players and reported only 50% of the equity would vest after four years, 25% more after six years and the rest of it after eight years.
It also reported how the 36 players from the top tier were judged on “career points,” such as how long they were full members, victories, how often they reached the Tour Championship and extra points for significant victories.
Jason Gore, the tour’s chief player officer, said in one of the videos, “It’s really about making sure that our players know the PGA Tour is the best place to compete and showing them how much the Tour appreciates them being loyal.”
Emails also were sent to 64 players who would share $75 million in aggregate equity based on the past three years, and $30 million to 57 players who are PGA Tour members. Also, $75 million in equity shares was set aside for 36 past players instrumental in building the tour.
The program has an additional $600 million in equity grants that are recurring for future PGA Tour players. Those would be awarded in amounts of $100 million annually started in 2025.
Players only get equity shares from one of the four tiers now, although everyone would be eligible for the recurring grants.
Even with equity ownership geared toward making the PGA Tour better, the concern was players questioning who got how much and whether they received their fair share.
LIV Golf lured away seven major champions dating to 2018 since it launched in 2022, all with guaranteed contracts and most of them believed to have topped $100 million.
McIlroy, playing this week in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, was asked how much would make players feel validated for their decision to stay with the PGA Tour.
“I think the one thing we’ve learned in golf over the last two years is there’s never enough,” McIlroy replied.

To compile the latest edition of this list—which covers the calendar year 2022—we combined information from official sources, previously reported information, data from aggregators like Spotrac and estimates from dozens of players, agents and industry insiders. On-course income includes prize money earned on the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, LIV Golf, LPGA Tour, PGA Tour Champions and other pro tours.
Off-course income includes estimates of money earned from sponsors, performance and licensing fees, appearance fees and profits from business ventures. Bonus money includes in-season and season-ending performance money (e.g., FedEx Cup, Aon Risk Reward, Comcast Business Tour Top Ten), Player Impact Program awards for 2022 and sign-on payments for players who joined LIV in 2022. LIV bonuses are estimates pro-rated for the estimated or reported length of a player’s contract and have been treated as if that money is not offset by prize money earned in tournaments. Money paid into a deferred compensation program is not included.

We elected not to include former players who did not earn on-course money in 2022, like Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman. Nicklaus made an estimated $35 million in licensing, architecture and appearance earnings, and Norman’s salary from LIV has been reported to be $50 million. Arnold Palmer died in 2016, but his licensing and real estate businesses still generate more than $20 million a year. We also didn’t include potentially lucrative investments in ventures like Tiger Woods’ and Rory McIlroy’s TMRW Sports—which hasn’t produced revenue yet—and Justin Thomas’ and McIlroy’s investment in fitness tracker Whoop. Those moves reinforce the adage that you can get only so rich being an employee. The real money comes from being an owner.

"I'm starting to wonder how the PGA Tour differs from LIV Golf" - Andrew ‘Beef' Johnston slams PGA for handing out massive loyalty bonuses
A ndrew "Beef" Johnston criticized the PGA Tour for introducing the new Player Equity Program, which aims to acknowledge players for their loyalty. Over the past two years, the golf world has undergone significant changes with the emergence of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf. Numerous players from various golf circuits worldwide have joined this breakaway series.
Several top-ranked golfers, including Jon Rahm, Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, and Bryson DeChambeau, have been lured to the Saudi Circuit with lucrative offers worth millions of dollars.
Last month, the PGA Tour unveiled its Player Equity Program, distributing grants to players who remained loyal to the Tour. Notably, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy received the highest amounts, with $100 million and $50 million, respectively, as reported by The Telegraph.
English golfer Andrew "Beef" Johnston recently criticized the PGA Tour for implementing the new policy. In his blog on Todaysgolfer.com, he voiced his opinion, writing:
"I'm starting to wonder how the PGA Tour differs from LIV Golf. I remember when LIV arrived on the scene and Jay Monahan said his Tour prided itself on being a meritocracy with clear paths for the players and them rewarded for their performances."
He further emphasized how golf has become increasingly focused on money.
"Basically, it's the PGA Tour saying, "Here's a s**t load of money from us for not taking a s**t load of money from them." It's madness, man. Everything has just become about rewarding the top end of the game, and it's come about because of the divide. It is so damaging for our sport," Johnston added.
Adding to the statement, Andrew "Beef" Johnston also criticized the Signature Events of the PGA Tour. The circuit has introduced limited-field, no-cut events with enhanced purses in the series. This is similar to the LIV Golf events, which also feature limited-field, no-cut events, and increased purses.
"The Signature Events are limited field, no-cut events with these enormous purses. Sound familiar? The PGA Tour claimed they took away the cut to guarantee the big names would be there for the whole tournament but that's bullsh*t. How often does Rory miss a cut anyway? It's all about money and the sponsors, not the fans," Johnston added.
Johnston had previously played on the PGA Tour but currently holds membership in the European Tour. He has won five professional tournaments in his career, including one on the European Tour.
What is the PGA Tour's Player Equity Program?
The PGA Tour Player Equity Program benefits all dedicated players on the circuit. The American golf series inked a $3 billion contract with Sports Strategic Group (SSG) to establish PGA Tour Enterprises.
Initially, SSG invested $1.5 billion in the circuit, and PGA Tour players have reportedly benefited from the deal through the new Player Equity Program. Approximately $1 billion will be distributed among PGA Tour players based on four categories.
Around 193 golfers will benefit from the program, with $750 million distributed among 36 players, followed by the next 64 players receiving $75 million in grants. $30 million will be distributed among 57 players, followed by $75 million to the remaining 36 players.

Gear Questions You’re Afraid to Ask: What makes tour players’ clubs different?
Are you playing the exact same clubs that your favorite player uses?
Getty Images
Welcome to Gear Questions You’re Afraid to Ask, a GOLF.com series produced in partnership with Cleveland/Srixon Golf.
Is there really that big a difference between a tour player’s golf bag and my own? – Boaz W., Arizona
You ask a good question, primarily because tour player usage is still a major influencer when it comes to how clubs are marketed and sold. Equipment manufacturers still shell out big dollars to top players to play certain clubs because they think the general public will want to play the same clubs tour players use. The answer to your question though, isn’t all that simple.
It depends on the player. It’s possible your favorite golfer does use some or all of the same clubs you have, but odds are they’ve been tweaked ever so slightly (sometimes more than slightly) to meet his or her precise demands.
This is what tour issue equipment and tour vans are all about. “Tour issue” means it’s either specifically designed for a specific tour player or group of players who want particular club characteristics that don’t necessarily correlate with the features and benefits that most recreational players are looking for. This could mean a clubhead with a smaller profile, a higher center of gravity, an open face angle–features that will not be popular for the golfing masses. Tour vans are also at the ready at tournaments every week to help professionals tweak their gear even further with custom shafts, hosel bends and configurations that again, meet the precise demands of competitive players.
That said, we’re not saying every piece of gear used by tour players is tour issue. Sometimes you’ll come across a player using the exact same driver, wood, hybrid, iron, wedge, or putter than you can buy at your favorite golf retailer. But even still, it’s almost always customized in some way. We’ve held dozens (hundreds, maybe) of tour players’ clubs in our hands, and have taken notice of a few defining characteristics in both the tour issue and stock issue gear that they use.
Let’s look at a few things we’ve noticed that maybe you can learn from:
They take their grips very seriously
Tour players are sticklers about their grips. This means that not only are they super choosey about the grip models they choose, they pay careful to wear and tear and ensuring they always have excellent traction. They’re also very particular about weight and diameter and the number of wraps below the grip. It’s not rare to see a player’s grip with multiple layers of tape underneath the lower half of the grip to reduce tapering. And, we’ve also seen far more thick/midsized grips than we’ve seen skinny ones.
Their putters are perfectly fit to their strokes
For whatever reason, putter fitting hasn’t caught on as much as it should with amateur players. Tour professionals almost unanimously use putters that are fit precisely for his/her stroke, posture and tendencies. And while they may change things up on occasion, when they do there’s always intentionality behind every change they make. The moral here? Everyone should get fit for a putter. And not just once, but every time you have the itch to try a new flatstick.
They use clubs that are precisely distance-gapped
One of the biggest misses we as amateurs make when assembling our bags is we overlook how important it is to evenly space the distances we produce from club to club. Where tour players really get things right is in their selections for hybrids/scoring irons. Depending on what they choose, they pick a make and model that fills the gap perfectly between their woods and irons, even if it means the loft on their hybrids/scoring irons don’t follow the 4-degree standard you’d normally find from one club to the next. Again, that’s something we all need to do. Picking clubs by loft gaps alone isn’t enough.
They don’t adjust much
The inclination to tinker with adjustable weights and adjustable hosel sleeves can be tempting, especially when you’re not hitting things well. But truth is, frequent modifications to clubs with adjustable features is pretty rare among better players. They tend to reserve weight and hosel configurations to the fitting process and rarely do we ever see an adjustment made before, during or after a practice session.
Some shafts and clubheads are in fact, darn near impossible to buy
As mentioned, sometimes we come across a tour issue club or component that unless you know someone on the inside, are virtually impossible to find out in the wild. This could be a fairway wood with a high CG or a wedge that is 2-degrees flat that has a negative-bounce sole. Whatever it is, tour issue stuff is relegated to tour players for a reason, and not something the majority of players should be concerned with anyway.

2024 LIV Golf Singapore schedule, field of players, teams, prize money, purse, live stream, TV schedule
Liv golf embarks on its second tournament in as many weeks.
Following yet another successful event in Australia, LIV Golf is back at it again this week in Singapore. LIV Golf Singapore marks the second time in as many years that the 54-hole circuit will travel to the country, and it represents the league's final event before the second major championship of the season, the PGA Championship.
It will be at Valhalla in two weeks' time that Smash GC's captain, Brooks Koepka, will defend his Wanamaker Trophy. The five-time major champion has not experienced the fast start that he saw in 2023 before winning at Oak Hill, but he may have showed signs of things to come with a quality outing at last week's LIV Golf Adelaide.
Koepka hopes to build on the momentum he garnered at The Grange ahead of his major defense. Meanwhile, Cameron Smith's Ripper GC proved victorious in a playoff over Louis Oosthuizen's Stinger GC in the league's first-ever team playoff. The all-Australian squad scored their first victory together on home soil and aim to keep a good thing going this week.
Meanwhile, two-time major champion, Jon Rahm, continues to flash form but is without an individual crown to show for it. The world No. 5 is getting himself in position and is among the favorites to take home the trophy before eyeing his third different major championship.
Torque GC's Joaquin Niemann remains in fine form, as does Crushers GC's Bryson DeChambeau. Dustin Johnson will look to lean on his teammate, Patrick Reed, with their 4 Aces are sinking down the season-long standings with only six tournaments to go.

LIV Golf's Talor Gooch Will Not Try to Qualify for the U.S. Open
A number of players from the Saudi-backed league will attempt to play their way into the U.S. Open but not LIV's top player from 2023.
- Author: Bob Harig
Several LIV Golf League players will attempt to make the U.S. Open field via final qualifying next month.
Talor Gooch won’t be one of them.
The top player on LIV Golf in 2023 who won three times and captured the season-long points race said during a news conference in Singapore on Thursday that he would not be taking part.
He did not give a reason.
Gooch appeared alongside Smash GC teammates Brooks Koepka, Graeme McDowell and Jason Kokrak, and they were all asked if they would attempt to qualify for the U.S. Open, which will conduct 36-hole qualifiers around the country on May 3.
Both McDowell and Kokrak said they would not only attempt to qualify for the U.S. Open, but for the British Open as well—which will have final qualifying two weeks prior to the championship.
🏆🇺🇸 World #624 Talor Gooch on if he plans to play in a U.S. Open qualifying event: “I’m not.” Should the USGA give LIV Golf’s Talor Gooch a special exemption? pic.twitter.com/enhnD2SIwh — NUCLR GOLF (@NUCLRGOLF) May 2, 2024
A total of 35 players from LIV are scheduled to play in final qualifying. Koepka, a two-time major winner and the reigning PGA champion , is exempt.
Gooch simply said: “I’m not.” And offered no explanation.
The one-time PGA Tour winner has been outspoken about not being included in the major championships.
Last year, he earned his way into the Masters and the British Open having finished in the top 30 in the 2022 PGA Tour FedEx Cup standings. But Gooch was miffed that the U.S. Open changed its rules to state that the same exemption would only go to a player “eligible” for the season-ending Tour Championship. Having gone to LIV Golf, Gooch was not eligible.
Earlier this year, Gooch made headlines when he said: “If Rory McIlroy goes and completes his (career) Grand Slam without some of the best players in the world, there is just going to be an asterisk. It’s just the reality.”
LIV Golf does not receive Official World Golf Ranking points for its events and many of its players have plummeted in the rankings while not earning points. Gooch, who was top 50 in the world around this time last year, has sunk to 624th in the OWGR. He is ranked 41st by Data Golf, which includes LIV tournaments.
He tied for 34th at the Masters last year and then missed the cut at the PGA Championship. He did not attempt to qualify for the U.S. Open and then missed the cut at The Open.
Gooch has no victories so far this year with LIV Golf but does have three top 10s. He is the defending champion of this week’s event in Singapore.
Among the LIV golfers scheduled to compete in final qualifying for the U.S. Open are Sergio Garcia, Patrick Reed and Henrik Stenson.
