The PGA Tour Champions (commonly known as the Champions Tour) is a senior golf tour specifically made for golfers above the age of 50. The Professional Golfers Association officially founded the tour over 40 years ago in 1980.

The beauty of golf is that it ages like fine wine. You’re never too old to play golf! Even if you want to play in a USGA Senior Amateur Championship .

This article goes in-depth about the senior golf tour five major tournaments. It highlights renowned championships, golfer stats, and a few fun facts.  However, for a more detailed review of the PGA TOUR Champions, you’ll want to read our ultimate guide .

Origin & History of the Senior Golf Tour

PGA Tour Champions, senior tour at the En-Joie Golf Club

The Senior PGA Championship has been unofficially active since 1937 as a high-profile tournament. It was exclusive for golfers above the age of 50.

However, in 1978, a profitable tournament between teams of the best senior golfers called the ‘Legends of Golf’ gave birth to the idea of an official senior golf tour.

The PGA formally established the ‘Senior PGA Tour’ in 1980. This senior tour was designed for golfers aged 50 and above to showcase their talent.

The 1980 tour consisted of only four events. For comparison, the 2021 tour consisted of 25 events. A lot has changed over the years!

The total prize money in 1980 was $475,000, which would be worth $1,707,901 today.

The next ten years, from 1980-1990, saw a considerable increase in the popularity of the senior tournament. The 1990 season consisted of thirty-eight official events with four major tournaments.

The entire prize money for the 1990 season was a whopping $17.8 million. In 2022, this prize money would be worth around $40,349,753.63 !

Fun Fact: Lee Trevino won 7 tournaments in the 1990 senior golf tour season. The most during the season.

Evolution of the PGA Tour Champions Name

In 2002, the tour was renamed the ‘Champions Tour’ till the 2015 season. The name PGA Tour Champions was adopted for the 2016 tour and onwards.

Qualifying & Playing on the Senior Golf Tour

Competitors in the senior golf tour have to play multiple tournaments throughout the season. These events are usually played over three rounds or 54 holes.

However, the five major championships of the tour are played over four rounds (72 holes) and have a 36-hole cut. Playing an additional round ensures bringing the best talent to the top of the standings.

Fun Fact: The average male golfer is estimated to hit a 219-yard drive. While the Senior Golf Tour’s average driving distance in 2022 was 282.0 yards . The longest drive of the tour was 308.8 yards by Padraig Harrington.

Senior Tour Age

With age comes wisdom. And the opportunity to qualify for the senior golf tour!

Here are a few requirements to qualify for the PGA Tour Champions:

  • The Senior Tour age requirement is 50 years old minimum.
  • Compete and qualify in the 72-hole Regional Qualifying Stage.
  • All successful qualifiers and exempt players must come in the top 12 of the Final Qualifying Stage between 78 golfers.

Spots in the Senior Golf Tour

Understanding the qualification system of the PGA Tour Champions is complicated, and hardly anyone understands it, according to Bobby Clampett , a professional Golf player, and analyst.

PGA Champions from previous years make up 30 of the 81 players on the field. Another 30 spots are given to players in the top 70 of the PGA Tour and Tour Champions.

The rest of the players include the World Golf Hall of Fame members and winners of previous PGA tours.

Players competing in the qualifying sessions also have a few spots reserved for them.

The 5 Senior Major Golf Championships & Their Winners

PGA Senior Tour with Senior Golfers making their final putts on the En-Joie Golf Course in NY

The Senior Major championships are a big deal in the tour. The best of the best golfers participate in Majors. Meaning that only players that meet certain criteria are given a spot in the Major tournament.

Major champions have their names go down in history books. This is one of the reasons why golfers praise Major events.

There are five major championships in the PGA Tour Champions. These championships differ from the other tours as they are played over four rounds (as opposed to 3 in the standard events).

Here are the five majors of the PGA Tour Champions, along with their relevant winners.

PGA Tour Champions Preview

PGA Tour Champions starts 2023 season in Hawaii this week and here are 5 storylines to watch

Oasis Championship - Final Round

Bernhard Langer remains a competitive force at the age of 65.

Michael Reaves/Getty Images

Out with the old, in with the new, it is said annually as the calendar changes years, but applying it to the PGA Tour Champions is problematic so long as Bernhard Langer keeps showing up. Yes, he’s old, by athletic standards, 65, but he steadfastly declines to act his age and isn’t going anywhere.

In with the new, meanwhile, is the refresh button of the senior tour. Each year, there are a handful of successful tour players who turn 50, allowing them to join their graybeard brethren in their twilight years. Welcome Stewart Cink and Boo Weekley.

The PGA Tour Champions 2023 season opens Thursday with the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai in Ka'upulehu-Kona, Hawaii. How will the year unfold? Here are five storylines to follow:

Langer’s Hale Irwin chase

Langer’s two victories in 2022 gave him 44 in his senior tour career, only one shy of Irwin’s senior record. The fact that the second of those two wins came in November, and by six shots no less, suggests that time continues to lag far behind him and that his securing the record seems likely.

Steven Alker, Act II

The New Zealander was a career journeyman unable to crack the code until he played his way onto the senior tour, where he became the star of his own heartwarming story. In his first full season, he won four times, including the Senior PGA Championship, finished in the top three in 13 of his 23 starts, earned more than $3.5 million, and won the season-long Charles Schwab Cup. What will he do for an encore?

Is Steve Stricker’s best yet to come?

Stricker’s 2021 season ended prematurely and his 2022 started late, the result of an illness that sidelined him for six months. Still, he won four of his 12 starts last year, finished second three times, and placed in the top 10 in all of his starts. Healthy and finally a full-time senior player, Stricker, 56 next month, should be primed to make a run at the Charles Schwab Cup.

Don’t forget Padraig

Last year, rookie Padraig Harrington won four of his 19 senior starts, including the U.S. Senior Open, while finishing second in two other majors, the Senior Open Championship and the Regions Tradition. He earned nearly $3.3 million while playing four fewer senior events than Alker.

The rookies

It is not a particularly strong group of rookies, with only one major champion joining the senior tour: Cink, a former British Open champion who turns 50 on May 21. Cink is a formidable addition, however because he’s remained competitive on the PGA Tour.

1313160808

Sam Greenwood

Also becoming eligible, on July 23, is Boo Weekley, a winner of three PGA Tour events, the last of them having come nearly a decade ago. Technically, both Justin Leonard and Notah Begay III are still rookies, but both are still employed by NBC Sports, too, so they’ll be moonlighting as players. The senior tour, meanwhile, will be deprived a potential star, Lee Westwood, who is not eligible by virtue of his having joined LIV Golf.

'This is kind of my hometown event': Millbury's Gary Young will be chief referee for the PGA Tour at Travelers Championship

T PC River Highlands, site of the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut, has undergone several enhancements the last few years, and two PGA Tour officials from the Worcester area played key roles in making them happen.

Gary Young , PGA Tour senior vice president of rules and competitions, is a member of the Tour’s enhancements competitions committee which decides which improvements are needed at courses which host PGA Tour events, and Milan Moore , PGA Tour director of golf course design and construction, has overseen many course upgrades on Tour, including those at TPC River Highlands.

Young grew up in Northbridge and lives in Millbury. Moore grew up in Shrewsbury. When Young was the head pro at Pleasant Valley CC in Sutton before joining the PGA Tour as a rules official in August of 2007, he gave lessons to Moore when she was a young girl.

“It’s kind of crazy,” Young said. “To see her grow into what she’s doing now and have the role with the PGA Tour she has, it’s quite impressive. There’s not many females in that role, and she’s just ideally suited for it.”

Moore, a 2004 graduate of Tufts University, has worked in design for the PGA Tour for 21 years. Her father, the late Dr. Roger Moore, was one of the original members at PV.

The PGA Tour looks at the data after every event to see how each course holds up to the modern player and then makes competitive enhancements.

At TPC River Highlands over the last five years, the Tour has refined the course, upgraded the practice facilities and built a bigger clubhouse with financial assistance from Travelers, the title sponsor. Since Keegan Bradley set a tournament record by shooting 23-under 257 to win the Travelers last year, the Tour has tweaked six holes, but Young said the changes already were scheduled before he set the record.

Young said the PGA Tour focuses more on the excitement of the competition than the score. If it doesn’t rain during the Travelers June 20-23 and the conditions are firm and fast, he expects the winning score to be about 14 or 15 under par. But when the course is wet and soft, the scores are usually lower.

Young will work the Travelers for the 17th consecutive year, his longest association with any PGA Tour event.

“Now that it’s the last remaining event in New England and the Northeast, this is kind of my hometown event,” said Young, who was at TPC River Highlands for the Travelers media day last Monday.

It takes him a little more than an hour to make the 68-mile drive from his home in Millbury to TPC River Highlands, but he stays near the course during the week of the tournament.

For the fourth consecutive year, he will serve as the chief referee at the Travelers. He sometimes appears on the television broadcast to explain a weather delay or a rule infraction.

“We’re definitely not TV stars,” Young said of him and his fellow rules officials. “We are background players in a sport. That’s the way it should be.”

Young likes to tell people that if they see him on television during a golf event, something bad must have happened. He has become what he calls a “pseudo weather expert” by hanging around with the on-site meteorologist, and he said it drives his wife, Lauri, crazy. Sometimes when he’s on the road, he calls her to warn her about a storm heading her way.

“She’ll say, ‘Gary, I’ve got this handled. We have meteorologists back here,’ ” he said.

Young used to serve as the advance official at the Travelers, marking the course for out of bounds and other things, tracking the player field with the Tour competitions department, working with the local superintendent and Tour agronomist to determine greens speed and height of the tees, fairways and rough, and overseeing the construction of grandstands and luxury boxes to make sure they don’t affect the competition.

Moore oversaw work on the aforementioned six holes at the Travelers from September through early December.

The first fairway was narrowed closer to the green to provide the same width in the landing area for the longer hitters as it does for the shorter hitters.

Mounds with fescue were added to the par-5 sixth and 13th holes to give the longer hitters something to think about while they try to reach the green in two shots.

The ninth and 11th greens were shrunk in size and surrounded by grassy hollows with deep rough.

“Rather than adding yardage, which seems to be everyone’s answer nowadays,” Young said, “we take a look at the way the course is designed. It’s always been a second shot golf course, which requires precision iron play and a good short game. We wanted to keep that.”

Data revealed that the longer hitters drove beyond the bunkers on the par-4 12th hole, so the fairway was ended at 300 yards by growing primary rough on the downslope. The longest hitters will probably hit 3-wood instead of a driver to avoid the rough.

The Tour wants to improve the fan experience by widening walking areas throughout the course to improve the flow of the galleries and by installing interactive venues.

Tournament sites also need room for the increased number of semi-trucks and trailers for player fitness vehicles and television equipment.

“It’s a bigger show now than it used to be 10, 20 years ago on the PGA Tour,” Young said. “It grows every year, and the property needs to reflect that.”

The PGA Tour doesn’t fully own every TPC course, but it is the sole owner of TPC River Highlands. On the other hand, the Tour is a minority owner of TPC Boston in Norton. TPC Boston hosted 17 PGA Tour events from 2003-2020 and will be the home of the LPGA Tour’s FM Global Championship Aug. 29-Sept. 1.

TPC River Highlands currently has the only PGA Tour event in New England, but Young believes the PGA Tour will return to TPC Boston someday, possibly as part of a rotation with other sites. So after the LPGA Tour event finishes, the PGA Tour will work with Gil Hanse on upgrades at TPC Boston, including building new greens complexes on the fifth and seventh holes.

TPC Boston opened in 2002 as an Arnold Palmer design and was redesigned by Hanse and Brad Faxon in 2007.

Young is considering regaining his amateur status, but he hasn’t gotten around to it yet. He no longer plays a lot of golf, but last year he did get to play at Newport Country Club for the first time, and he fell in love with it. Newport will host the U.S. Senior Open June 27-30, the week after the Travelers.

Young said due to the advanced equipment and the improved player conditioning, the seniors may find Newport to be on the shorter side.

“But whatever that golf course may lack in distance,” he said, “with the character of the golf course and the difficulty of the greens, it will be a good challenge.”

Young is an honorary member at PV, where he worked for 22 years and which hosted 32 PGA Tour events and 13 LPGA Tour events from the early 1960s through 1999. He hasn’t played PV since August, but last Wednesday co-owner Jay Kunkel invited him to give his opinions on work being done on the course.

“The place looks great, it came through the winter very well,” Young said. “I would expect by the time we get to Memorial Day, the place is going to be in fantastic condition.”

Brusco at National Club Pro Championship

Worcester Country Club teaching pro Bob Brusco tied for 58th in the PGA Professional Championship last Sunday through Wednesday at the PGA Frisco Fields Ranch East and West Courses in Frisco, Texas.

The Grafton resident shot 77-70-78-76 for a total of 13-over 301 in the tournament, which is also known as the National Club Pro Championship. He earned $4,100 as the top NEPGA golfer in the event.

Bruso was the Central Mass. Division 2 medalist his senior year at Auburn High and a third-team All-American as a senior at Worcester State.

Wolstenholme ready to take on Moscow

August 16, 2018.

Gary Wolstenholme is preparing himself for ‘a test of golf' at Moscow Country Club with the VTB Russian Open Golf Championship (Senior) set to get under way on Friday.

And Wolstenhome, a three-time winner on the Staysure Tour, has played Moscow Country Club on two previous occasions and he is relishing the chance to tackle a course which he believes is in better condition than ever.

“This is the third time I've been here and I've become more impressed with the golf course as I've played it,” said Wolstenholme. “I think the golf course is definitely in a lot better condition than when we were here three or four years ago.

“The weather's been very difficult, so the green staff have had to work very hard to make this such a good venue. The design of the golf course is an extremely good test.

“It's long and it creates a test for players to play both right-to-left and left-to-right shots which, if you're a golfer, you appreciate that creates more of a test in itself.

“I think the course lends itself to long hitting, especially with the weather that we had last night as the course is pretty long anyway.

“Magnus P Atlevi, Stephen Dodd, Phil Price, from Wales, and Phil Golding, who won at London Golf Club recently, all stand out to me as having a chance to do well, but golf being golf, who knows? I might even do well! It's such a good test, I think only a very good player will do well here.”

Golf is an emerging sport in Russia and Moscow Country Club is at the forefront of the quest to encourage more of the country's natives to start playing.

Wolstenhome, GB&I's record points scorer at the Walker Cup who also received an MBE in 2007 for services to golf, has outlined both what he thinks is needed to grow the game, and some of the benefits which accompany it.

“To me, I think driving ranges are the future as far as giving people an opportunity to play the game,” he said.

“Short golf is the future, as are par three tournaments and things like that. To me, that's where we can get golf going in the future.

“Golf has the opportunity to be able to cross dividing lines, whether it's social or cultural. The great thing about golf is wherever you go in the world – and there are golf courses everywhere – from war-torn areas to the most affluent areas in the world, you transcend that.

“You can have somebody who is the lowest of the low from the point of view of not earning a great amount of money to multi-millionaires. You share that enjoyment of what is actually an incredibly difficult sport.”

Joining Wolstenholme in Russia this week is Staysure PGA Seniors Championship winner Philip Golding, Order of Merit Number Five Phillip Price, WINSTONgolf Senior Open champion Stephen Dodd and 1989 European Tour Number One Ronan Rafferty

The action begins in Russia on Friday August 17, with José Manuel Carriles and Jean Pierre Sallat the first group to tee off at 8.00am local time (BST+2).

Watkinsville PGA Tour golfer gives heartfelt message as he hits five years of sobriety

golf tour senior

PGA Tour golfer Chris Kirk of Watkinsville gave a heartfelt message to Instagram followers on Monday as he reached five years of sobriety.

The former UGA golfer battled alcohol issues after a successful beginning to his tour career and fell in the rankings until he decided to get help. He stepped away from the game on May 7, 2019 after becoming sober just over a week prior.

"Hey y'all, it's April 29 and today I'm celebrating five years of sobriety," Kirk said on the social media platform. "Five years ago I was completely hopeless and couldn't see any way out. Thankfully I ran into a group of people that had once been hopeless just like me and showed me the way out."

Kirk, who turns 39 on May 8, and his wife Tahnee, an Oconee County High School graduate, have three boys and live on 42 acres of farmland in Oconee County.

The caption in his post read "The work never stops but I live a life of peace and contentment that I never knew was possible."

A victory at the Korn Ferry Tour's King and Bear Classic in the summer of 2020 was the beginning of his journey back to the PGA Tour. He regained his Tour card the next year and has become a steady figure on the tour once again, winning The Sentry tournament in Hawaii to open the 2024 season. He also won the Honda Classic (now Cognizant Classic) at the PGA National resort in 2023.

He's currently ranked No. 24 in the world after closing 2023 at No. 52. His 2-over par at the Masters tied him for 16th to give him his best ever finish at the tournament.

"Every good thing, every great thing, every awesome thing that I have in my life is 100% because I got sober," Kirk said in the video. "God bless you, have a great day."

2024 Zurich Classic purse: Payout info, winner’s share

Luke List and Henrik Norlander are in the hunt at the 2024 Zurich Classic.

Getty Images

The Zurich Classic occupies a unique spot on the PGA Tour schedule. It’s the only team event of the year, and that means there are a couple of specifics that make it different to individual medal play.

While the winning team is still entitled to PGA Tour exemptions and FedEx points, there are no world-ranking point s awarded at this tournament. Prize money is also slightly more complicated, with the winning team sharing the money generally earmarked for first and second place, the second-place team splitting the money for third and fourth place, and so on.

This week, there’s an $8.9 million purse up for grabs, with $1.268 million going to each player on the winning team. The drop-off to second is pretty steep, with $525,100 for each player on the runner-up team. (Compare that to last week’s Signature Event purse in Hilton Head , where every player in the top 10 make $541,000 or more.)

To clear six figures in New Orleans this week, players will have to finish in the top 11.

Below, you can check out the complete payout breakdown for this week’s Zurich Classic played at TPC Louisiana.
