Public transport in gran canaria, the guaguas will take you anywhere on the island.

Exploring the island by public transport or taxi from Maspalomas, Playa del Ingles  or any other region is not difficult at all. Today there are only two companies that ensure bus services in Gran Canaria, Global and Guaguas Municipales. These buses run 24/24 to almost all corners of Gran Canaria. Almost all buses are luxuriously equipped and usually have air conditioning which is sometimes necessary with the hot temperatures.

The bus company Global ( blue buses ) will take you anywhere on the island. The bus company Guaguas Municipales  ( yellow buses ) operates mainly in the capital Las Palmas.

You can perfectly combine both bus companies for an excursion in Gran Canaria. On this webpage, you will find information about both Global and Guaguas Municipales. On certain web pages, you will always find information on which bus line to take to reach your destination.

Global your public transport in Gran Canaria

Global is the largest Spanish transport company that organizes local public transport by bus in Gran Canaria.

Global is also active in Mauritania for public transport. It is a modern and efficient company, which is evident from the high-quality technological buses. Nearly 700 employees provide public transport in the Canary Islands for the 18 million passengers every day.

Pay for the GLOBAL buses

Nothing is free, so you also have to pay for the bus in Gran Canaria.What are the options for traveling by bus in Gran Canaria?

Ticket on the bus . As with me and you, you can ask for a ticket from the bus driver. These tickets do not have any discounts. You just have to tell the bus driver where you want to go. Pay in cash, and preferably with exact money i.e. coins.

A euro note is possible if necessary, but you should be aware that the bus driver does not have much change.

A map from point A to point B . You can purchase this bus pass in advance. The  bus card AB  is only valid on that route mentioned on the card. With this card, you have a 20% discount on the normal fare. An AB bus card contains 10 bus journeys. Reloading the card can be done at various sales points in Gran Canaria. Check them here .

The TRANSGC SUMA card . Once approved, this card gives you an even better discount than the  AB  card. I personally find this TRANSGC bus card a good alternative if you opt for a long stay in Gran Canaria. Only drawback is that you have to order this card in advance from  Global . The card itself is free, only reloading has to be paid for.

A  recharge  of the card must be with a minimum amount of €15. The total discount depending on how much you have recharged can be up to 40 %. For a top-up between 15 € and 59 € ( 20% ), between 60 € and 99 € ( 30% ),  from 100 € ( 40% ). Pensioners and students receive an additional 20% discount. Families with at least 4 children also enjoy an additional discount. Reloading the card can be done in the next outlets.

As already mentioned, you should already order the card in advance. Order your card as soon as possible upon your arrival in Gran Canaria. After about 10 days you will be able to collect your SUMA card at the San Telmo ( Las Palmas ), Tropical or Maspalomas bus station, depending on where you ordered it. The card is personal, so be sure to add a passport photo and your identity card number.

It is very important that you scan the SUMA card at the card reader when boarding the bus. It is equally important that you scan the TRANSGC card again when getting off at your bus stop. By scanning when boarding and disembarking, the correct amount will be deducted. If you do not have enough credit on your bus card, this will be deducted from your next top-up.

The bus company GLOBAL has made it a lot easier for tourists today by hanging information signs at every bus stop in the main seaside resorts. These signs show you the destination and what it will cost you. You can consult the departure times at the bottom of the information board.

An excursion around the island by public transport

Take a trip through the capital Las Palmas  on your own initiative, then use the yellow city buses “ Guaguas Municipales “. Please note, tickets from “ Global” are not valid on Guaguas Municipales. All info on this can be found on the website . This information is only in English and Spanish, though.

For a excursion to the capital Las Palmas , though you can use the GLOBAL blue buses and the MULTI PASS . No 30 , 50 and No 05 run direct or as semi-direct round trips to San Telmo ( Las Palmas ) or Santa Catalina ( Las Palmas ). You can buy a ticket with a 15% discount at the Maspalomas and Tropical bus stations, only in the morning and not on the bus.

Please note that the discount is only valid there and back. If you have purchased a ticket for Santa Catalina, you must also take the bus back in Santa Catalina. For example, if you take the bus back to San Telmo, you will have to pay extra. This tip is also valid for a San Telmo ticket.

A city trip by bus is possible with the special City Sightseeing Las Palmas bus. This trip takes about 90 minutes. An excursion on the island is also organised by private companies. You can book these excursions through your tour operator or hotel reception.

At the bottom you can download an overview of all available bus services including stops, and a map of Gran Canaria. I would like to warn that timetables can be adjusted depending on the season. As far as the timetables are concerned, you really shouldn’t take them so seriously. these are not always respected, this may be due to crowds or other problems.

With the Global bus to and from the airport

The bus stops at the airport have been moved since November 2014. These are now located closer to the airport building near the GC-1 highway.

Line 01 – Las Palmas (1) – Airport (2) – Puerto de Mogan (3) Line 05 – Las Palmas (1) – Airport (2) – Bahia Feliz (3) – Maspalomas (4) Line 11 – Las Palmas (1) – Airport (2) – Aguimes (3) Line 36 – Telde (1) – Carrizal (2) – Airport (3) – Maspalomas (4) Line 60 – Las Palmas (1) – Airport (2) Line 66 – Airport (1) – Bahia Feliz (2) – Playa del Ingles (3) – Maspalomas Lighthouse (4) Line 90 – Telde (1) – Airport (2) – Bahia Feliz (3) – Arguineguin (4) – Playa del Ingles (5) – Maspalomas (6) This bus visits almost all important stops towards the south of the island. A stop at Las Palmas airport is also provided here. If you want to go shopping in Vecindario from the south, this is also possible. There is a stop at the Atlántico shopping center.

Pay close attention to this when you head back south. The bus stops at the same stop both there and back. So you have to be careful that you don’t take the wrong direction. Guaguas Municipales in Las Palmas

The bus company Guaguas Municipales provides public transport in the capital Las Palmas. An extensive network of 40 bus lines, including 3 lines at night, is carefully organized and operated every day with 242 modern buses.

Guaguas Municipales is available 365 days and 24 hours a day to transport you in the capital Las Palmas. With 30 million customers per year, you can call Guaguas Municipales an effective and efficient public service. New technologies, such as smartphone applications, simplify use for the customer so that you are always informed in real time.

GuaguasLPA –  Android  – IOS Guagua Bus – Android LPA Movilidad – Android – IOS .

The Guaguas Municipales network is divided into colours. These colours indicate the frequency of the buses. Red ones, such as bus nr 01 and nr 12, are high frequency buses and depart from the port of Las Palmas. The dark blue numbers L1, L2 and L3 are buses that run only at night ( lineas luna ) from 22.45 to 05.30.

Pay for the bus from Guaguas Municipales

Pay directly to the driver on the bus . When boarding, ask the bus driver for a ticket. You pay in cash with coins or a euro note of maximum €10. Pay as much as possible with exact money. The fare is €1.40 (one way and for 1 person)

Bono-2 is a journey card with which you can make two journeys. You may transfer once to another bus with a different destination. You must purchase this card in advance in local shops or bus stations such as San Telmo or Santa Catalina. The card costs €2.40 (2 bus rides)

Bono Guagua sin Contacto  ( yellow electronic card ( recommended ) ) is a journey card that allows you to make 10 journeys. You may use all bus lines of Guaguas Municipales  You must purchase the card in advance at local shops or bus stations.

You can also recharge the Bono Guagua sin Contacto through a network of terminals 24/24. Recharging can then be done using a bank card or credit card. Guaguas Municipales is greatly expanding its sales network in Las Palmas. You can already find pay terminals at Teatro Pérez Galdós, Hoya de la Plata, Parque de Santa Catalina, San Telmo ( Bus station ), Obelisco, Felo Monzón (Hipercor) y Mesa y López (Radio Ecca)

The card costs €8.50 (10 bus rides). You can top up this card for a minimum of €8.50 and a maximum of €50. There is a one-off contribution of €1.50 per card. You must scan this card at a card reader when boarding until you see the green color.

Bono-Bus  ( blue card ) is a journey card that allows you to make 10 bus journeys. You may use all lines of Guaguas Municipales. You must purchase the card in advance in local shops or bus stations. The card costs €8.50 (10 rides). You cannot top up this card.

You can purchase or reload the cards at shops, bus stations, bazars and the yellow reloading machines. Some official offices are : Parque de Santa Catalina – 07.45 tot 19.45 uur ( kaart ) Teatro – 07:30 to 20:00 ( card ) Obelisco – 7.30am to 2.30pm. Also open the first and last week of the month from 3.30pm to 8pm. ( map ) Estación de Guaguas de San Telmo – 07:00 to 19:00. Saturday and public holidays 08:00 to 13:00. A taxi in Gran Canaria is an affordable alternative

Finding taxis is not that difficult at all. They drive around all the time, you just have to raise your hand and there is your taxi. The official taxi services of the island of Gran Canaria are always equipped with a meter that indicates the amount during the ride.

The indicated rates are per taxi and per route, according to the official rates approved by the government of the Canary Islands. Please note, if necessary, ask for a price to your final destination before boarding. Many of the most important routes are listed on information boards at the taxi stands, including what you will have to pay. Please note, these prices are approximate.

As long as you stay within a certain zone, such as from Playa del Ingles to Maspalomas/Meloneras, you pay +/- 4 to 5 €. During night hours you pay a little more. For example, from Las Palmas airport to Maspalomas there are 2 zones, which can be more expensive.

You can immediately recognize a taxi from another zone by a different color. Feel free to have a chat with the taxi drivers, that can sometimes be an experience in itself.

What can I take with me on the bus?

In principle, you can take almost anything on the bus on public transport in Gran Canaria. suitcases, backpacks, beach utensils, surfboards, etc. The condition is that you do not disturb other travelers on the bus. If necessary, the driver will kindly ask you to place the material at the bottom of the luggage compartment of the bus.

All objects must also be sufficiently protected so as not to injure other persons. A folding bicycle is allowed inside the bus provided you have already folded it. You must take the designated seat in the middle of the bus. You are responsible if someone is injured as a result.

Small dogs , assistance dogs and guide dogs and other pets are allowed on the Global bus. Persons with disabilities and traveling in a wheelchair must sit on the bus in the opposite direction of travel. The provided seat belt must be used. It is better to inform the driver of the bus that you are with a wheelchair patient . The driver will then do what is necessary to help you.

A buggy for children is allowed on the bus if necessary. The child must then be secured in the buggy with a belt. It is better to place the buggy in the luggage compartment and place the child on your lap. Places for child seats are provided on some buses. You must therefore secure this in accordance with the safety rules

Gran Canaria is a territory of Spain and a member of the EU and Schengen. As a result, it is covered by both the Schengen agreement and the European Union. Depending on the visitor’s country and desired stay period, Gran Canaria has different visa and entry requirements.

Entry Restrictions for Non-EU/Non-Schengen Nationals to Gran Canaria

This covers the UK as of the 31st December 2020, when the Brexit transition period ends.

Passport 

A passport is required in order to go to Gran Canaria. To make sure it is valid for travel, it is crucial to check the age and expiration date. Your passport must satisfy two requirements:

• Valid for at least 3 months after the date you depart from Gran Canaria. Please verify the passports expiration date.
• When visiting Gran Canaria, your passport has to be less than 10 years old. The calculation starts with the issue date.

These entry requirements were established using data from the European Union . Please double-check your airline’s requirements as several currently demand passports to be valid for at least six months at the time of travelling.

It is crucial that you examine the validity of your passport well in advance of your trip so that you have enough time to apply for a renewal if necessary.

Visiting Gran Canaria as a tourist.

According on your country of citizenship, there may be different Gran Canaria visa requirements. Currently, short-term tourist stays to Gran Canaria do not require a visa for residents of many different nationalities. These nations consist of: The United Kingdom The United States Canada Australia New Zealand Israel Japan and many others

EES stands for entry/exit system

EES (short for entry/exit system) is an information technology system that will be used at passport control for passengers from non-EU, non-Schengen countries beginning in 2024, however this is looking like 2025. The EES will automate border control procedures and eliminate the need for passport stamping. This will expedite the process and improve the accuracy of the checks being performed.

ETIAS – travel authorisation

Before visiting Gran Canaria, Non-EU/non-Schengen nationals will soon be required to apply for travel authorization.

ETIAS, which stands for European Travel Information and Authorization System, is the name of this new scheme. A valid ETIAS permit will allow the person to visit Spain (and/or other European countries) as a tourist for short periods of time. Once operational, an ETIAS travel authorization can be obtained for € 7 via the official website and is valid for three years.

Entry Requirements for Citizens of Schengen EU Countries to Gran Canaria

Passport / identification card.

EU citizens travelling within the Schengen area are usually not required to show their passport or national identity card. You will, however, need to bring one of these documents with you, as foreigners on Spanish territory are required to carry valid proof of identity.

Bus Services, a little guide to travel in Gran Canaria

One of the best ways to discover the most amazing and greatest places around the island is exploring it by bus. However, it is always a bit scaring to pick up the bus when you don’t know a city. “Where does this bus go to?” “Would I get lost?”… Stop overthinking! In order to calm your anxiety, we have prepared a little guide with all the information you need to know about bus services in Gran Canaria .  

Bus Services and Public Transport in Gran Canaria

Down below you will find a list with every point you need to know about bus services and public transport in Gran Canaria .  

The “ Guaguas ” bus service will take you anywhere on Gran Canaria

Nowadays, there are just two companies which provide bus services on Gran Canaria : Global and Guaguas Municipales . These buses have 24 hour service to almost every corner of Gran Canaria. Almost every bus is luxuriously furnished and the vast majority of them have air conditioning as it is very necessary due to the warm temperatures. The bus company Global , which can be recognized by its blue buses , will take you anywhere on the island. The bus company Guaguas Municipales services operates primarily in the capital city, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.  

These buses are recognizable for its yellow colour.

Global , your bus services on Gran Canaria

Global is the largest Spanish local public transport which organizes bus services in Gran Canaria . It is a modern and efficient company, which you can see by the high technology buses. Global provides daily a great public transport network to the Canary Islands.  

Paying for the Global bus services

You have to ask for a ticket to the bus driver once you are in the bus, and you only have to tell the driver where you want to go. In terms of paying on the bus, you have to pay with cash. You must pay in euros, and you can pay with notes, but you have to bear in mind that the bus driver may not have change, so you better pay with coins the exact amount of money. One option is named the AB bus pass . You can purchase this bus pass in advance, but it is only valid on the route indicated on the map . If you get this card, you will have a discount of 20% off the regular fare.  

Moreover, you can reload the card at several outlets in Gran Canaria.

Another one, the TRANSGC card gives you an even better discount than the AB card . This TRANSGC bus pass is probably the best option if you are thinking about staying in the island for a long time. The only disadvantage is that you have to pre-order this card. The card itself is free, but you have to pay the reloading. You must recharge the card with a minimum amount of 15 euros . The total discount will be up to 60% and it will depend on how much you money have charged. If you charge between 15 and 59 euros, you will have a discount of 20% off the regular fare. If you charge between 60 and 99 euros, you will have a discount of 30% off the regular fare. And if you charge from 100 euros, you will have a discount of 40%.  

Families with at least four children, students and pensioners will receive an additional 20% discount.

As we have already mentioned, you have to order these cards in advance. Order your card a few weeks before you leave on vacation. You can pick up your card after about 10 days at the San Telmo bus station in Las Palmas. Cards are personal, so you must be sure to add your photograph and your ID number. It is very important that you scan the TRANSGC card at the reader when you are boarding the bus and when you get off it . If you don’t do this, the correct amount won’t be deducted. Oh, and don’t worry if you don’t have enough credit on the bus pass, you will be able to get on the bus! However, that money will be deducted from your next reload.  

Paying for the Guaguas Municipales bus services

In this case, you have to request a ticket once you are in the bus and you also have to pay directly to the bus driver . You must pay with cash, better coins, and if you want to pay with a note, it must be from a maximum of 10 euros. If you can, pay with exact change. The fare per person just one way is 1.40 euros. There is a ride ticket — Bono-2 — that allows you to make two trips and its cost is 2.40 euros, so you save some money! You may use to take a different bus to go to another destination, or simply as a round trip. If you want to acquire this card, you have to buy it into local shops or bus stations first, like San Telmo or Santa Catalina bus station in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria . If you are interested in other options, you should know that there is also a yellow electronic card , named “ Bono Guagua” which is probably the most recommended one. It is a ride ticket that allows you to make 10 trips, and you can pick up any bus from Guaguas Municipales . This card must be purchased previously into local shops or bus stations, and you can pay with cash or credit card.  

The price of the card itself is 1.50 euros, plus the 10 bus rides, which price is 8.50 euros. This card enables you to reload a minimum of 8.50 euros and a maximum of 50 euros. This card must be scanned at a card reader when you are boarding the bus, and you have to wait until you see the green colour light. The last option is Bono Bus — the blue card — and it is a ride ticket with which you can make 10 bus rides. It is quite similar to Bono Guagua , the only difference is that this card is free and it cannot be reloaded. You are also allowed to use it at all the lines of Guaguas Municipales . This card can be bought in advance at bus stations or local shops. The price of this card is also 8.50 euros for 10 bus rides.

Ross Clarke has recently returned from Gran Canaria where he was researching for the upcoming Canary Islands guidebook (publishing November 2024). Here he creates the ultimate guide to help you start planning your vacation to the Canaries' third-largest island.

When you fly into Gran Canaria or traverse its coastline by boat to dock at one of its ports, you instantly understand why this island has captivated and intrigued people for centuries.

It’s been given the nickname of "the continent in miniature" due to its diverse terrain, and "the land of eternal spring" for its climate. The original inhabitants before the Spanish named it "Tamaran," and their legacy can be seen across the island in remains of their cave dwellings and artefacts.

Gran Canaria is the middle child of the archipelago, having sprung up from the ocean floor about 14 million years ago. It is often compared to its neighbor, Tenerife , but each of the islands has its own merits.

Most people will know Gran Canaria for its beaches and resorts, particularly Maspalomas in the south that encompasses the popular spot of Playa del Inglés . And while the beaches and sunny weather are spectacular, there’s much more to this beautiful island than sand, sun and sea, from incredible history and culture, magnificent sights and natural wonders, to outstanding food and wine.

When should I go to Gran Canaria?

For many years, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria held the title for the city with the best climate in the world. This is because the capital enjoys a temperate year-round climate with little rain and rarely scorching temperatures. Interestingly, Gran Canaria has its own microclimate, meaning that it can have hot, dry, sunny weather in the arid south, chilly, crisp and fresh temperatures in its mountainous center, and humid, hazy vibes in the north.

Gran Canaria is incredibly popular for winter sun, and beaches can be busy with tourists even in January – although you’re unlikely to spot a Canarian sunbathing until after April. Winter also plays host to several celebrations, including one of the world’s largest carnivals in February. These more-than-week-long celebrations take over the whole island and there are parties, parades and plenty of costumes and fun. 

Summer also gets busy when the mercury can hit 30°C (86°F), however, with more than 60km (37 miles) of beaches around the island’s coast, you can usually find a spot on the sand to soak up some rays. Autumn and spring can be good times to visit, and prices tend to be a little lower, places less busy and temperatures ideal for exploring and sightseeing.

How much time should I spend in Gran Canaria?

Gran Canaria is both ideal for an exciting city break over a long weekend, a week-long beach holiday or an extended stay. In fact, it’s one of the most popular places for remote workers looking to balance work with the laid-back island lifestyle.

If you’re here for a week, you’re probably going to want to hit the beach (and I can’t blame you). While the dunes of Maspalomas are a sight to behold, try one of the quieter beaches such as Melenara near Telde or the remote Playa Güigüí – it’s a bit of a hike but well worth it for unspoilt sand and an all-over tan if that’s your thing! Once you’re suitably bronzed, consider hiring a car and visiting the center of the island. You’ll find fragrant and fire-resistant Canarian pine trees, family-run vineyards, and soaring volcanic monoliths such as Roque Bentayga , which were worshipped by the island’s original pre-Hispanic inhabitants.

If you’re hopping off a cruise ship or here for a city break, the capital city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria – to give it its full name – is Spain’s eighth largest city and exudes a cool cosmopolitan vibe. It’s incredibly foodie and it’s worth indulging in the restaurant scene, from cool Canarian dishes by the beach in Mar Gastrotasca , to fine dining at Muxgo – the island’s first Green Michelin Star restaurant thanks to its 0km (0 mile) food philosophy. Don’t miss the beautiful Las Canteras beach with its natural barrier reef that protects the shore and makes the seawater almost swimming-pool like. The old town of Vegueta and Triana is also worth a visit to wander the historic streets and museums.

Is it easy to get in and around Gran Canaria?

The island has one major airport, Gran Canaria Airport (LPA), located about halfway down the east coast, which covers both international and domestic flights. It’s easy to get from the airport to all major resorts by bus, taxi or hire car. 

The bus network is extensive and reaches all parts of the island. Buses are inexpensive and reliable and run by Guaguas Global . In the capital, you’ll see yellow buses. These run the length and breadth of the city and are operated by Guaguas Municipales . Single journeys start at €1.40.

Car hire is a great way to explore the island. Prices are generally good value although can peak during busy periods so it’s advisable to book ahead. Try using a local company if you can such as Cicar or Tirma . You could easily drive the circumference of the island in a single day, it is so compact, but it’s worth taking your time and planning journeys in advance so you don’t miss anything. Make sure to fill up with fuel before heading inland, as the steep, winding mountain roads can deplete reserves quicker than you think.

From the ports in Las Palmas and Agaete, you can catch ferries and high-speed catamarans to neighboring islands including Tenerife.

3 of the best things to do in Gran Canaria

1. see the waves of sand.

The rolling, shapeshifting, undulating dunes of Maspalomas should be on anyone’s must-visit list. These mountains of golden sand were here long before any development started in the resorts that now surround the protected space. Over the last few years, the Canarian government has brought in strict regulations for the dunes in order to preserve and protect them. There are several dedicated routes that you can walk that’ll take you to various parts including oases and La Charca nature reserve, a home to migratory birds. For your own bird's-eye views, head to the panoramic Atelier Cocktail Bar on the top of the Bohemia Suites hotel.

2. Climb the the Roques

There are two very famous monoliths in the center of the island, both of which are worth a visit. The Roque Nublo is the more famous, standing at a height of 80m (262ft) and soaring nearly 2000m (6561ft) above sea level. The trek to the rock is relatively easy and takes about 30–40 minutes.

Alternatively, try climbing to the Roque Bentayga . This was the last point of defence for the island’s original inhabitants, and it’s easy to see why as it stands on a plinth with views of the surrounding sunken volcanic crater. Check out the ground at the top, there are carvings and holes in the stone that are still a mystery to historians.

3. Wander the old town of Las Palmas

No visit to the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is complete without a stroll around the beautiful historic streets of Vegueta. Take a trip up the bell towers of the imposing Catedral Metropolitana de Santa Ana de Canarias to get views over the city, sea and surrounding rooftops. Nearby, stop at the Museo Canario to learn all about the island’s original inhabitants and visit the rather creepy skeleton room containing many real examples of their mummified and skeletal remains. Finish with a visit to Terraza Belvédère to enjoy a local wine on the rooftop overlooking the Santa Ana Square.

My favourite thing to do in Gran Canaria

I’m a sucker for a good market, and in Gran Canaria you’re spoilt for choice, from craft and artisan pop-ups to food and agriculture. One of my favorites, that I used to go to regularly when I lived in Las Palmas, is the weekend market in Vega de San Mateo. There are two giant warehouses that are full to the brim with stall holders. One is for crafts and but the other (which is my favorite) is the agricultural one. I love nosing at the stalls and chatting to the stallholders who often give you little taster of their baked goods or let you sniff spices. There is usually a stall selling truchas de batata – sweet potato pasties – that I devour in an instant. It’s also a good place to pick up non-touristy souvenirs such as seeds, herbs and sauces.

My other favorite is the weekend market at Teror. This town is famous for two things: the church dedicated to the island’s patron saint, Virgen del Pino; and chorizo de Teror , a sort of spreadable chorizo paste. You’ll find countless stalls selling bocadillos (rolls as big as your head) slathered in chorizo de Teror and fresh cheese.

How much money do I need for Gran Canaria?

Gran Canaria can be relatively cheap if you avoid the obvious tourist traps. The currency is the Euro (€) and most places take credit and debit cards. Over recent years cash has been on a decline, but it’s worth carrying some Euros in case you need them, especially in less touristic and developed areas.

• Self-catering apartment (including Airbnb): €75–100 per night
• Bus ticket: €2.50
• Coffee: €1.50
• Tapas for two: €25–40
• Beer/glass of wine: €3
• Bottle of local wine: €15–30

Is this a family-friendly destination?

Canarian people adore children, and you’ll find families socialize together from grandparents to babies until all hours. And don’t be surprised if Canarios talk to your children before they speak to you – the island is extremely family friendly.

Is Gran Canaria good for gay travelers?

Gran Canaria is one of the most popular destinations for the LGBTIQ+ community. The island and islanders are incredibly open, and it is a safe environment to be yourself. Each year there is a famous Winter Pride in Playa del Inglés, centered around the Yumbo Centrum – the world’s only LGBTIQ+ shopping center – where you’ll find bars, shops, restaurants and clubs.

What is the calima ?

Some days in Gran Canaria, you might find that the air is very hot and yet it’s foggy or misty. This is known as the calima – the hot winds that blow over from the nearby Sahara Desert carrying sand dust in the air. While it won’t hurt you, it can make temperatures and being outside unpleasant.

Exploring gran canaria by bus: how to ace public transport.

Hiring a car is not the only way to see Gran Canaria. I travelled the length and breadth of the island on its buses, which were comfortable, reliable and cheap.

Here’s all you need to know to explore Gran Canaria by bus.

Public Transport in Gran Canaria

Bus services operated by Global reach most destinations on the island. It uses a modern fleet of shiny, blue buses.

Gran Canaria buses are clean and equipped with the latest safety technology and air conditioning. Additionally, the fleet is wheelchair accessible.

In many respects, buses are of a higher standard than those found in the UK.  

Additionally, the yellow buses operated by Guaguas Municipales operate primarily in the island’s capital, Las Palmas.

Gran Canaria does not have a train service.

There is no luggage limit on the island’s bus services but even small bags and suitcases need to be placed in the hold. The driver unlocks this compartment on request. Bicycles and scooters can be carried in the baggage hold of Global’s buses.

As this bus makes multiple stops, opt instead for the #91 if you are travelling between Las Palmas / Airport and Puerto de Mogán.

How to Buy Your Bus Ticket

Buy your bus ticket for a one-way journey from the driver. Both cash and contactless card payments, including those by smartphone, are accepted.

Try to have the exact change if you are paying for your ticket with cash. The driver will not give change from notes larger than €20.

When you board the bus, just let the driver know your destination and he/she will charge the corresponding fare. In return for handing over a small sum, you will be given a ticket that clearly states your destination. Hold onto your ticket until you disembark the bus.

Travel cards

Like bus services in Tenerife , a rechargeable payment card for Gran Canaria buses is available. This is called the Easy TransGC Card and more information is here .   However, applying for this card is time-consuming and involves verification of a photo ID. Card recharging and collection points are limited.

How Much is Gran Canaria Public Transport?

Using buses on the island is very affordable. The price of your bus fare depends on the route and how far you are travelling. You can check the latest fares here .

For example; in 2023, it cost me €4.15 to travel from Puerto de Mogán to Maspalomas Lighthouse and €8.75 to get from Puerto de Mogán to San Telmo Station in Las Palmas.

A day trip to Teror from Las Palmas set me back less than €5.

Tips for Using Gran Canaria Buses

1. Plan your route with Google Maps or Moovit

Global’s website is the place to go for looking up bus timetables and it also has a route search function. However, in my experience, a combination of Google Maps and Moovit was more useful to plan journeys

For planning on the go, Global also has an app. You can download this app for Android devices here or via Apple Store here .

2. Expect buses to be busy

It is not just tourists who use public transport in Gran Canaria. Bus services are heavily used by locals and visitors alike.

Make sure that you arrive before the bus’s scheduled departure time to bag your place in the queue. On more than one occasion I witnessed people standing for the length of their journey.

If possible, try to board the bus close to the beginning of the route

3. Enter the bus through the front door and exit through the rear door

4. Press the stop button as you are approaching your destination

5. Don’t place your faith in the information screen on the bus

Most (but not all) buses in Gran Canaria will have two information screens, one near the driver and a second by the exit door.

As much of the screen’s real estate is given over to rolling adverts, the next station and route information is squished into a small section of the screen. If you are unsure of the route, place yourself strategically near the screen or bring binoculars.

Also, pray that the information screen is working. I was caught out on one journey when the screen was not in the best of health and, as a result, missed my stop.

6. Pick the right station in Las Palmas

Las Palmas has two bus stations.

San Telmo – the busier and bleaker of the capital’s bus stations, this is close to the Old Town (Vegueta and Triana). It reminded me of Luton bus station in the 1980s minus the crowds.

Santa Catalina – this shiny and modern terminus serves the marina and Playa de Canteras.

Where to Stay in Gran Canaria Without a Car

If you are not hiring a car in Gran Canaria, the best base is the island’s lovely capital, Las Palmas . As well as being Gran Canaria’s main public transport hub, Las Palmas has a charming old town and is close to the airport.

With fast and frequent bus services, one of the main resorts in the south of the island is also a good bet. For example; from Maspalomas, you can be in Las Palmas in under an hour.

I split my vacation in two, staying in Puerto de Mogán in the south for five days before moving to Las Palmas. This was a perfect combination

My Experience of Getting Around Gran Canaria by Bus

Getting around by bus was an easy and affordable way of seeing the island, especially as I was travelling alone to Gran Canaria . It removed the stress of driving and parking and, in a small way, I did my bit towards preventing climate change.

Apart from the lack of flexibility, the only other disadvantages of exploring Gran Canaria by bus were the infrequency of some schedules and a lack of direct routes to some destinations, necessitating a change of bus. However, with a little planning, I overcame these disadvantages.

• Stay Visa : Which will allow you to stay for no more than three months uninterrupted on this country or successive stays for a period of time that summed up shouldn’t exceed threes months per semester counting on the first entry date.
• Residence Visa : This visa will allow you to live in Spain, although you shouldn’t perform any laboural or professional activity.

How should I know if I need a visa to enter in the Canary Islands?

First, you should know tha t foreign who wishes to enter in Spain should have a visa, unless it’s in one of the following conditions :

• You won’t need a visa if you’re staying for less than three months on a six-months interval and you have nationality from one of the following countries : Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Chipre, Costa Rica, Croatia, El Salvador, Slovakia, Slovenia, United States, Estonia, Guatemala, Honduras, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Japan, Lithonia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, Nicaragua, Norway, New Zealand, Panama, Paraguay, Poland, Czech Republic, Korea, Romania, San Marino, Santa Sede, Singapur, Switzerland, Uruguay, Venezuela, Hong Kong, Macao and any country that belongs to the European Union .
• If you enter with the condition of refugee you won’t also need a ininterrumpida visa
• Crew members from ships who have sea agent identity document and commercial planes crew members who have their identity card, ticket and do not abandon the plane also don’t need any visa.

Driving License in the Canary Islands:

For the citizens of European Union you only need to bring your own driving license . For citizens from others countries you might need to bring an International Driving License .

European Health Card

This document replaces the old E-111 form. With this document you have the right to receive free medical assistance in every country within the European Union . This is valid for one year counting on the date you obtain it. To request this document you should present you medical card at your local Social Services.

Travel insurance

It’s advisable to hire a short term insurance . It might be very useful. You might request it to your travel agent .

Visiting the Canary Islands soon? Make sure to know what to expect when it comes to purchasing a  Canary Islands SIM card .

Fortunately, Europe is one of the best places where you can buy a SIM card easily.

You should be able to find a cheap SIM card pretty much anywhere in Europe. In fact, most data packages are affordable, which makes the whole thing easier!

In this guide, we’ll explain where to buy a SIM card in the Canary Islands in person and online. We’ll also discuss prepaid SIM cards and eSIMs if your mobile supports them.

Before you read this guide, you may wonder if you actually need a SIM card in the Canary Islands.

If you don’t mind not having Internet, you’ll likely find free Wifi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

That said, if you need data to get around, call a cab, or translate Spanish – you may want to get a SIM card for your travels in the Canary Islands.

Best SIM Card For Canary Islands

If you’re traveling in the Canary Islands, we recommend using a SIM card from Orange, Vodafone, Movistar, or Airalo. (I’ll get back to Airalo later on, so keep reading to learn more!)

That said, if you’re planning on visiting other countries during your trip to Europe, you might want to make sure to pick an option that offers coverage in other European countries.

How To Buy A Canary Island SIM Card

You can either buy a Canary Islands prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport.

That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind. And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

For this reason, I’d recommend buying a SIM card directly from the mobile provider store. Note that you may need your passport to buy one.

Although, this means you won’t get data right upon your arrival. So, if you prefer to be connected at all times, you could use an eSIM or purchase a Europen prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let’s take a look at the data plans offered by Orange, Vodafone, and Movistar.

Orange Spain SIM Cards

Orange Spain offers several different tourist plans that cover the Canary Islands:

• Unlimited GB, valid for 5 days for EUR 15 ($16.02)
• Unlimited GB, valid for 15 days for EUR 25 ($26.70)
• 25 GB, valid for 28 days for EUR 10 ($10.68)
• 50 GB, valid for 28 days for EUR 15 ($16.02)
• 100 GB, valid for 28 days for EUR 20 ($21.36)

Vodafone Spain SIM Cards

Vodafone Spain has four different prepaid plans available and offers coverage in the Canary Islands:

Movistar offers several SIM-only plans with coverage in the Canary Islands:

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could purchase it online or on websites like Amazon.

You’ll find different plans on Amazon. For example, the OneSimCard works in more than 200+ countries and gives you data for $0.01 per MB. The Canary Islands are included.

But there are many other options worth considering, so have a look and make sure the countries you plan on visiting are listed.

You can plan a trip that suits your dreams – be it a relaxing beach vacation with an all-inclusive package or an adventure full of road trips, hiking, diving, and other outdoor activities. And if you want to, you can even mix it up and combine a few adventurous days with a relaxed hotel stay.

While exploring islands in Europe tends to be more expensive than in Asia, the higher costs are more than worth it when it comes to Gran Canaria. After all, the island is full of amazing landscapes, cities, and things to do. You are bound to find what you love and after reading this Gran Canaria travel budget guide, you will know how much the trip of your dreams will cost you. And maybe you will even stumble upon some things that you will want to add to your trip.

About this Gran Canaria Travel Budget Guide

This Gran Canaria travel budget guide is based on a press trip, but I looked up how much everything would have cost me if I had paid for everything. That way, it will be easier for you to plan your own Gran Canaria vacation costs, if you want to follow a similar itinerary.

Like my last travel budget guide , this overview of Gran Canaria vacation costs is split into two parts. In the first part, you can see how much my trip cost so you have a comprehensive overview.

After listing all of my own expenses in Gran Canaria, I will list the average price of all things that could impact your daily budget in Gran Canaria. This way it will be easier for you to figure out how high your own Gran Canaria travel budget per day will be. You can easily add or exclude the things you do or do not want to do, and adjust everything based on whether you are traveling alone, with a friend, or with a group.

Accommodation Expenses in Gran Canaria

As I was working with the tourism board and some hotels, especially the Gloria Palace, I got the chance to experience everything from a hostel, a vacation house, and a luxurious room with a private pool with an all-inclusive package. Therefore, this Gran Canaria travel budget guide will be much more in-depth than any previous guides about vacation costs when it comes to accommodation costs.

For the biggest part of my trip, I shared the room costs with a fellow blogger, so I will break the costs down to show how much the room cost in total and how much the price per person was. Please be aware of the fact that I did not pay for all hotel stays. I did however look up the exact costs of everything to give you a comprehensive overview.

2 nights in HiTide Surf House, Las Palmas (dorm room) – 17,50€ per night – 35€ total

Food and Drinks Expenses + Supermarket

Unlike during other adventures of mine, I only ate five full meals at restaurants while exploring Gran Canaria. This can mostly be attributed to the fact that I spend an entire week living in a rental house which allowed me and my travel buddy Florine to try out hand at making Canarian food and tapas. While staying in hotels, breakfast was often included and for three days, I even had an all-inclusive package. Therefore, it was enough to simply grab some smaller snacks while out and about instead of sitting down to enjoy a full meal.

Eating out: 56,55€

While shopping at the supermarket, my friend and I decided to split all expenses in half. We went to the shops several times to ensure that we did not have to throw anything away at the end of our trip. For the most part, we bought vegetables, fruit, bread, cheese, hummus, guacamole, flour, milk, eggs, and chicken. Funnily enough, our cheese expenses made up a fourth of our supermarket budget.

Total supermarket expenses: 110,96€ – my share: 55,48€ + 8,58€

Total eating out costs: 56,55 EUR / 65,44 USD / 48,59 GBP / 90,60 AUD + cocktails 14,00 EUR / 16,20 USD / 12,03 GBP / 22,43 AUD + supermarket 64,06 EUR / 74,13 USD / 55,04 GBP / 102,64 AUD

Transportation Costs in Gran Canaria

Airport Bus (LPA to Las Palmas & Las Palmas to LPA): 4,60€

My total public transportation costs: 4,60 EUR / 5,32 USD / 3,95 GBP / 7,37 AUD

Rental Car and Fuel Costs

Gran Canaria is not a small island and therefore perfect for shorter road trips. We had a rental car for 17 days which allowed us to see amazing locations all over the island, so I can only recommend you to rent a car even if doing so does increase your Gran Canaria travel budget. Our rental car was from Tirma Rent a Car and I can only recommend them as they were great.

Total Rental Costs: 645,15€ for 17 days; 37,95€ per day

There are a lot of free activities in Gran Canaria, but when it comes to these things to do in Gran Canaria, the additional expenses are well worth it.

I love buying small souvenirs for both family and friends and myself. When it comes to Gran Canaria, I mostly bought things related to local delicacies as I fell in love with the Canarian cuisine.

Gran Canaria Travel Budget

Accommodation costs in gran canaria.

There are accommodations of every price class and form all over Gran Canaria, and prices tend to vary depending on the location and the season. If you book accommodations all over Gran Canaria and mix vacation homes and hotels, so you can experience the different vacation types the island has to offer, you can expect to pay around 60€ per person per night. Therefore, a week costs around 360€ per person.

Keep in mind that accommodation prices tend to rise as more people travel there in the summer or fall holidays, so be sure to book in advance to get the best deal.

If you wish to stay within a certain price class, the different accommodation types in terms of costs are as follows:

$ – 20 – 25€ / night p.p. – hostel dorm rooms, vacation home (at least 1 week; shared costs)

$$ – 40 – 65€ / night p.p. – hotel room (sometimes with breakfast)

$$$ – 75 – 175€ / night p.p. – 4* or 5* hotel, half-board or all-inclusive

Transportation Expenses in Gran Canaria

Upon arrival in Gran Canaria, it is really easy to catch a bus to wherever you want to go in Gran Canaria. The busses that stop at the airport have a luggage storage area, so you do not have to worry about getting on the bus with your suitcase. Just ask the bus driver to open the compartment for you. The cost for a bus ride from the airport to Las Palmas or the other way around is between 2,30€ and 2,95€.

A taxi from the airport to Las Palmas, and to other locations like Maspalomas, usually costs between 33€ and 38€.

Gran Canaria Car Rental Prices

If you want to see remote places and make the most of your time, getting a rental car is a must. With rental costs starting at 35€ per day, doing so might increase your Gran Canaria travel budget, but it is well worth it. After all, it allows you to explore the hidden gems of Gran Canaria , drive to Roque Nublo , and reach some of the best viewpoints .

On average, fuel (95) costs around 1,119€ per liter. We ended up driving all over the place and even revisited some more remote locations and only had to fill up the tank twice.

Most towns and even many hotels outside of Las Palmas offer free parking. It is only in really crowded places that you might have to pay 2€ for a day (Puerto de las Nieves) and between 7,50€ and 12€ for a night or 24 hours in Las Palmas.

Getting around in Gran Canaria

If you do not have a rental car, you can use a bus to explore Gran Canaria. The fares are not too expensive, so buses are a good option for travelers that want to get from one city to another. However, you should keep in mind that there might be no bus to more remote locations like some popular viewpoints and that other bus stops might only see two buses a day, which means that you are on a tight schedule.

A return bus ride from Las Palmas to Agaete costs 8.80€ and a return trip between Maspalomas and Las Palmas will cost you between 6,25€ and 6,80€ depending on where exactly you enter or exit the bus.

Food and Drinks in Gran Canaria

On average, a full meal in a restaurant in Gran Canaria costs around 11,30€. If you want to enjoy a lot of tapas as you explore the island, you should expect to spend between 2€ and 5€ per tapas depending on the size of what you are ordering. A glass of soda in a restaurant averages at 2€ and a bottle of water costs around 1.50€.

Be sure to enjoy as much of the Canarian cuisine while there and ask what the local dish is when you explore picturesque towns in Gran Canaria like Teror. And be sure to eat papas arrugadas with mojo rojo at least once.

Cocktail and Wine Prices in Gran Canaria

You are on vacation, so there is a good chance that cocktails and wine will be part of your Gran Canaria travel budget. And while the cocktail prices in Gran Canaria vary, most cocktails cost between 7,50 and 9,00€. For example, a cocktail at the popular 8 Canes Cocktail Bar in Las Palmas costs 8,60€.

Meanwhile, a glass of house wine or sangria usually costs around 4€. A 0.5l jug of sangria costs around 10€.

Is it expensive to eat out in Gran Canaria?

The food prices in Gran Canaria vary depending on the location, with scenic and sea view restaurants being more expensive, but on average a meal with one drink costs around 11,30€ per person. Therefore, the daily food costs are usually 20€ to 30€ per person if you eat all of your meals at a restaurant.

Activities in Gran Canaria

As you explore the island, you have the chance to do a variety of different activities that range from sports to food tastings at plantations. Hereby, some of the most popular ones are the following:

stand-up paddle-boarding – When you are near Anfi del Mar, you should consider renting a SUP for 1 hour. For only 15€ you get to explore this beautiful area from the seaside.

kayaking – Renting a kayak is possible at several locations around the island including Anfi del Mar. One hour costs 10€.

climbing/canyoning – The prices vary depending on the length of the tour but expect to pay between 60 and 80€ for an action-filled adventure.

Finca or plantation tour – If you want to learn more about the local products or the only European coffee plantations, you should tour a Finca or a plantation. Many great ones are located near Agaete including Cafe Platinum . I toured this plantation in my spare time and loved learning more about the plantation, its fruit, the coffee-making process, and the taste testing of local products right after the tour. The tour was only 10€ and more than worth it.

If you do not have a rental car or just want a day full of activities where you do not have to organize a thing, you can book a variety of great day or half-day trips in Gran Canaria. The most popular ones tend to be off-road jeep safaris, catamaran cruises, and even canyoning.

Diving Costs in Gran Canaria

If you love scuba diving, your total Gran Canaria vacation cost will undeniably be higher than that of non-divers, but the additional expense is more than worth it. After all, the island has amazing dive sites that you should not miss if you love small caves, swim-throughs, and vibrant marine life.

With prices ranging from 50 to 60€ per dive for shore dives, and 60€ to 70€ for boat dives, the prices are on par with other European diving destinations. And if you want to spend several days exploring the underwater world of Gran Canaria, you will even find great packaged deals that will decrease the price per dive by a good amount.

Gear rental prices vary from dive center to dive center with some centers charging per item per dive and others using a daily rate. Be sure to add gear rental costs to your Gran Canaria travel budget if you decide not to bring your own scuba gear or lack some items like a thick wetsuit.

Supermarket Prices in Gran Canaria

The prices in supermarkets tend to differ a bit based on the size and location of the supermarket. If you want the best prices HyperDino , Spar and Mercadona are the best options and tend to have the largest selection. If the name of these supermarkets has an Express at the end, the prices tend to be higher and the selection is more limited. On average, the prices in supermarkets are as follows:

• water (1.5l): 0,65 – 0,68€
• soda (1.5l): 1,16€
• soda (2l): 1,33 – 1,85€
• beer can (0.33l): 0,56 – 0,60€
• beer bottle (0.5l): 0,99 – 1,60€
• mojo bottle: 1,95€
• nachos: 0,90 – 2€
• guacamole: 1,60 – 2,15€
• cheese (gouda): 1,20€
• local aged cheese: 3,88€
• local cheese at a market: 8,00€

Obviously, the costs of souvenirs in Gran Canaria vary and it is impossible to list all possible souvenirs, but here are some of the most common things to buy.

• small mojo rojo bottle: 2,30€
• mojo cookbook 4,95€
• a bottle of Run Miel (1l) at the airport: 8€
• magnet: 2,50€

Sim Card and Roaming

At the time of visiting Gran Canaria, I had an active European mobile phone tariff, so I did not have to worry about being able to use my phone. And if you have an ongoing European tariff as well, you do not have to worry about it either. You will be able to use your normal data and calls without the European Union are free.

If you do not live in Europe, I can only recommend getting a local prepaid sim card. Getting the cheapest one-off rate is usually a lot less expensive than buying an international package from your normal phone provider. Vodaphone is a great option when it comes to coverage in Gran Canaria.

Expected Travel Expenses in Gran Canaria (2 people)

Prices vary depending on where in Gran Canaria you are and when you visit the island, but if you are not traveling on a budget, you should expect to spend 120€ per night on accommodation, 40€ on food with an additional 14€ for two cocktails or wine, an average of 40€ per day on transport or a rental car, 10€ on activities and 2€ as money spend on other small expenses like souvenirs. How to pick which Canary Islands you should visit in the summer

You may have heard of Tenerife or Gran Canaria, but there's more to Spain's Canary Islands than these two popular spots. The Canary Islands are popular with European travelers, but may not be on the radar of U.S.-based travelers thanks to their far-flung location closer to Africa than Spain. With United's new nonstop service from Newark (EWR) to Tenerife South (TFS), though, these islands are much easier to reach and much more accessible for American travelers.

You may be surprised at what each of the seven different islands has to offer — from shopping, star-gazing and volcanic wine tastings to lava tubes, kite-surfing and rolling sand dunes. Don't forget about the beautiful long stretches of sandy shores and picturesque rocky outcrop over the sea.

If you're excited to have a Canary Islands vacation, but aren't sure where to go or which island is right for you, this guide can help you figure out which of these seven volcanic islands (Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, La Palma, Fuerteventura, El Hierro or La Gomera) is best for your trip.

Getting to the Canary Islands

United's new nonstop flight means that U.S. travelers can finally fly without having to stop in another Spanish or European hub. The flight launched on June 9, 2022, flying three times per week.

Hoping to reach another island that's not Tenerife? You'll have to change planes in Tenerife, or in a hub like Madrid. There you can get nonstop flights on various airlines, such as Iberia, Air Europa and low-cost carriers, to five of the seven islands: Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and La Palma. You can also reach many of the islands from European hubs, flying on full-fare carriers or low-cost carriers like Wizzair, Ryanair, Vueling, Jet2 or EasyJet.

The smallest islands, El Hierro and La Gomera, both have airports, but you can only fly to these islands from Tenerife and Gran Canaria. It's also possible to travel by ferry. La Gomera is reachable in under an hour by ferry from Tenerife.

For outdoor adventures: Tenerife

Tenerife is home to one of the largest and most impressive volcanoes in Europe: El Teide. Even though it may be a breezy, summery day down below at sea level, you might spot snow near the peak of the volcano. It's possible to get nearly all the way to the top of the volcano via an intense hike or a cable car, but a trip to the summit requires a permit .

Paragliding is a popular sport around Tenerife. You can also go canyoning on Tejina Mountain, an ancient lava dome system of craters and caves. If you still haven't had enough of volcanic remnants, explore one of the biggest lava tubes in the world, Cueva del Viento, with over 10 miles of passages.

Hikers should trek through Anaga Rural Park, home to the Mercedes Forest, which features a number of moss species and laurel trees.

A walk up (or drive, if you're feeling lazy) the Los Gigantes cliffs, aptly named due to their massive size, offers a stunning overlook of the cliffs with views of the ocean and Tenerife's famous black sand beaches. Or, enjoy them down below at Los Guios Beach, which sits in the shadow of these hulking rock formations.

For wine and culture: Lanzarote

Few places in the world can boast volcanic vineyards. However, you can enjoy sipping, tasting and exploring in Lanzarote's volcanic wine country while soaking up views of the neighboring national parks: Timanfaya and Los Volcanoes. Besides sampling the wine, you'll learn all about how grapes are grown in the ashy, volcanic soil with small stone circles protecting the vines from wind and other damaging weather conditions.

Beyond Lanzarote's famous vinos and volcanoes and beaches (Papagayo is one of the wildest on the island and Playa Blanca has fine white sand), visitors can take in art, architecture and design.

You'll find original creations by artist César Manrique in various spots around the island. One of the most interesting examples is his former home, where he incorporates the natural landscape of caves, cactus and volcanic rock and tunnels into his eclectic design aesthetic.

For beaches, sand dunes and spa visits: Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria has 37 miles of beaches. Whether you want shallow, family-friendly waters or a quiet, romantic escape, Gran Canaria has enough sand and sea for everyone.

Couples can savor the peace and quiet of a stroll along the cliffside path from Playa de Puerto Rico to Playa de Amadores. Once in Amadores, sample some Spanish cava while sunbathing at the chic Amadores Beach Club. For a relaxing, four-hour spa circuit, the Corallium Spa at the Lopesan Costa Meloneras menu features unique offerings like a saltwater cave, a zodiac room with water beds and a Himalayan salt room, among other installations ($45 per person).

Families should head to Maspalomas, a lengthy run of golden sands with numerous restaurants and amenities nearby. Kids will love playing in the giant sand dunes — it's almost like you're in the Sahara, but with the sparkling sea beyond.

To hang with the locals, wander along the cobblestone streets through the island's capital, Las Palmas. There, you can meander past a number of historic buildings and tan on a lively urban beach, Las Canteras.

For star gazing and tranquility: La Palma

La Palma was the world's first destination certified as a Starlight Reserve. The entire island is committed to protecting the quality of its night sky, making it one of the best places in the world to stargaze. You can admire the twinkling lights from anywhere on the island, but there are 16 special spots — miradores astronomicos — that have been designated as the best places for astrotourism.

There's plenty to do in daylight hours, too. UNESCO declared the entire island a World Biosphere Reserve. Make sure to visit the Caldera de Taburiente, a national park formed by volcanic landslides. There, you'll have a chance to soak in the quiet, peaceful atmosphere near waterfalls, streams and hilly pine tree forests. Or, consider exploring the island's hidden black sand beaches like the Playa de Nogales, reachable only after walking down a long staircase built into a cliff.

The less adventurous can take a stroll through the colorful village of Los Llanos de Aridane, where you can shop at the outdoor Sunday market and admire the street murals.

For water adventures and wind-swept sands: Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is Spanish for 'strong winds.' Unsurprisingly, the island is famous for having some of the world's best kite-surfing and windsurfing.

If you'd prefer to stay on dry land, you can admire the many talented surfers year-round beachside. Avid water sports participants and spectators should plan to go during the Windsurfing & Kiteboarding World Cup. The popular event occurs every summer on Playa Barca, near the island's southern tip.

True beach bums may prefer to relax on mile-long sands like those belonging to Flag Beach near the resort town of Corralejo. For a wild, wind-swept paradise, El Cotillo is a beach on the north end of the island with a cove of crystalline sands surrounded by clear waters, and the exotic golden sands of Cofete, part of the Jandia Natural Park, are near-empty year-round.

Day trips to the tiny volcanic island of Lobos are perfect for those looking to really escape. Snorkelers will spy an abundance of marine life as the whole island is a nature reserve. Also, bird enthusiasts can view many species of sea birds on the island.

For eco-travelers and divers: El Hierro

Sustainable travelers should look no further than the smallest of the seven Canary Islands, El Hierro. You won't find any high-rise beach resorts blocking your sea views. Unlike many of the other Canary Islands, there are regulations that limit construction to just two floors. Besides being a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, El Hierro uses mainly renewable energy (both wind and hydro) for power.

The island's status as a biosphere reserve is designated above and below the water. The sea surrounding El Hierro features almost 50 dive sites. Visibility can be as far as 160 feet on a typical day of Canarian sunshine. You may spot marine life like parrotfish, barracudas, dolphins, manta rays or even whales and sharks.

Photographers – or those simply wanting a unique view – should check out spots like Roques de la Bonanza or Salmor. There you'll find rocks jutting out from the sea formed by underwater landslides and volcanic eruptions.

For hikers and nature buffs: La Gomera

La Gomera is perfect for active travelers who love to be near the ocean and out in nature but get bored just lying on the beach all day.

Whether you prefer intense treks or light walks, the island's 400 miles of trails offer something for every style of hiker. Many of these trails run through the Garajonay National Park, a subtropical forest famous for its laurel trees, that sits at more than 3,200 feet above sea level.

Another impressive outdoor wonder is the Organos Monument. This cliff that resembles a massive pipe organ was formed by columns of basalt dropping down toward the ocean.

Rock climbers should head to the Los Roques area, where giant rock formations jut into the sky. The three most famous are Roque de Agando, Roque de la Zarcita and Roque de Ojila. Although these three are declared national monuments and you can no longer climb them, there are plenty of nearby trails (both climbing and hiking spots) offering magnificent views of the rocks.
