Iron Maiden

Iron Maiden , the massively influential heavy metal band, is known for their audacious live shows filled with pyrotechnics, choreography and costume changes. But the best special effect on display at the Oct. 19 New York stop of the Legacy of the Beast World Tour was the huge smiles on the band members, who had a hell of a time shredding for fans after nearly 50 years in the business.

Popular on variety.

Also ambitious was the setlist, which opened with the first three cuts from their dense 2021 album “Senjutsu.” While the mid-tempo title track is light on memorable hooks, it juxtaposed McBrain’s thunderous toms with Dickinson operatic vocals, working in the lower end of his register. “Stratego” and “The Writing on the Wall” approached their classic sound more closely, but considering the hits-heavy setlist that had followed, the new material might have fit in a little better scattered throughout the night rather than a 20-minute slab at the beginning.

Early in the set, Dickinson joked of their aging fan base, “I’m amazed: Some of you are so fucking old, you should be dead!” But even as the band members march toward their 70s, their onstage antics and energy are in step with a teenage rock band, strutting, posing and throwing the devil horns because it looks cool. There were many instances where the members would wrap their arms around each other while someone was giving a particularly impressive solo, or touch the neck of a friend’s guitar and mock being zapped with electricity. That charge, conjured from grade-A heavy metal, is sure to keep Iron Maiden energized through their next world tour.

Iron Maiden announce huge North America tour for 2024

The Future Past Tour is officially coming to North America!

Eddie

Heavy metal legends Iron Maiden have finally answered American fans' prayers by announcing that the critically acclaimed Future Past Tou r will be coming to North America in 2024. Following this summer's blockbuster run across Europe (plus a small handful of dates in Canada and a stop-off at Power Trip Festival in California), Maiden recently confirmed that they would be returning to Australia, New Zealand and Japan in the Autumn of next year.

Now, the band have released dates for a full US and Canada tour that'll follow soon after.

“We’re really excited to be bringing The Future Past Tour back to Canada and the United States next year," says Maiden bassist and band leader, Steve Harris. "We know from the reaction of our fans at Power Trip and the shows we played in Canada recently that they really enjoyed hearing new songs from both Senjutsu and Somewhere In Time, and we’ve really enjoyed playing them! Soit’s going to be a great experience for us to visit many other cities across North America and bring this new show to those fans who’ve waited patiently to see it. See you all in 2024!”

“The Future Past Tour is one of the most exciting tours we’ve ever done and to be performing both brand new material and songs that haven’t been played for many years with a mix of fan favourites has been a great experience for both the fans and the band," adds the band's longtime manager, Rod Smallwood. "The energy has been incredible and we can’t wait to continue bringing this amazing and innovative show to fans around the world next year.”

See the full list of freshly announced dates below. As well as those aforementioned dates across the US and Canada, the band will also play Santiago's Estadio Nacional in Chile on November 27. For ticket details, head to the official Iron Maiden website .

The Future Past Tour is a celebration of both Maiden's most recent studio album, 2021's Senjutsu , and the band's classic 1986, sci-fi-powered opus, Somewhere In Time , with Metal Hammer 's Merlin Alderslade giving the show a rave review in Prague, writing in his 4 and a half out of 5 review: "Maiden continue to age like fine wine. Metal remains lucky to have them."

iron maiden best tour

British heavy metal titans Iron Maiden launched their Australian tour in blistering fashion at a sold out RAC Arena in Perth. The Future Past World Tour has had Maiden fans chomping at the bit after previous tour cancellations but any worrying doubts that a band who is heading towards it’s 50th anniversary would be showing signs of slowing down anytime soon, were quickly dispersed as the band ripped through a fifteen song set, of old & new. As the classic UFO track ‘Doctor Doctor’ blared across the arena and lights dimmed, the black fabric sheets were stripped back from the stage to reveal the artwork depicting a mix of the album’s this tour brings together; ‘Somewhere in Time’ and ‘Senjutsu’. Vangelis’s ‘Blade Runner’ theme echoed across the expectant room before the opening bars of ‘Caught Somewhere in Time’ lifted the crowds excitement as the stage filled with explosive fireworks and Iron Maiden’s Dickinson, Harris, Smith, Murray & Gers sprinted out like a group of youthful teens on their way to the park.

McBrain, hidden behind his now infamous drum kit led the way, setting down a thunderous rhythm with Harris powering alongside him. A playful Bruce sounds as good as ever as he teased the crowd with this exuberant hand gestures, encouraging cheers and punches in to the air. ‘Stranger in a Strange Land’ is next and it hits me that already, this early into the show, we could be witnessing something quite special tonight, as the band roar on. Dickinson is in a playful chatty mood tonight with Quokkas the main subject of discussion early on. The first of the newbie’s ‘The Writing on the Wall’ is received extremely well with the RAC Arena crowd in full voice – and even Eddie can’t resist to be in on a little bit of the action as he makes a brief appearance for the first time tonight.

‘The Time Machine’ reminds us that the recent ‘Senjutsu’ produced some extremely memorable tracks, before the crowd explode to the opening audio from The Number of the Beast’s ‘The Prisoner’. I had been disappointed at Iron Maiden’s last visit to Perth when they toured The Book of Souls. I had felt like they were going through the motions that night but tonight they were back to their very best – having seen the band eight times previously, tonight is up there as one of the top two or three shows I have witnessed – precise, powerful, playful. The trio of Adrian Smith, Dave Murray and Janick Gers showed their artistry in incredibly precise fashion as they tore through memorable guitar licks and solos with extreme ease. Gers in particular was a sight to behold, throwing his guitar around his neck at ever opportunity, while dancing and running each and every way possible. Steve Harris defies age and tonight reminded me of Peter Pan, the boy who never grew up – sprinting across the stage at times ensuring every corner of the arena got his undivided attention as he pointed and fired his Fender Precision bass across the crowd.

‘Death of the Celts’ was long and drawn out but again highlighted the artistic precision from Maiden before another playful anecdote from Dickinson about a former girl friend called Anges led us into ‘Can I Play With Madness’ (thanks Bruce – I can’t get Can I Play With Agnes out of my head now)! A welcomed return to the set for ‘Heaven Can Wait’, ensured we could all charge our lungs as the arena sang in unison. Fans have cried out for ‘Alexander the Great’ to reach the live forum and tonight the band finally obliged, and boy was it worth the wait – epic stuff! A word on Dickinson tonight – for a man who has the job of hitting these powerful notes each and every night, there seemed no sign of his voice giving up or wavering. Powerful and precise he set the bar high for a tour that has the country’s fan excited and he looks like he is going to enjoy bringing that to the people.

iron maiden best tour

Another fan favourite, ‘Fear of the Dark’, from the 1992 album of the same name, threatened to raise the roof and again Perth were in full voice, assisting Bruce at every opportunity – goosebump stuff! The now customary ‘Iron Maiden’ filled the air with a double Eddie appearance, his twelve foot samurai version strode on to the stage waving his Japanese blade, while his twenty five foot head nodded at us implying we had served them well tonight.

If there were any fears we weren’t getting any encores tonight then that was quickly dispelled with a trio of them/ ‘Hell on Earth’ was stunning both visually and musically as streams of fire blazed and danced across the stage – I was sat a good forty feet away and could feel the heat. ‘The Trooper’ received the biggest cheer of the night, but gone are the days of Dickinson in bright red tunic waving the Union Jack high above his head. No, tonight it was delivered with gusto and a juvenile Bruce running across the rear ramps like it was 1986 once more. ‘Wasted Years’ closed the night leaving the Perth crowd exhausted of all feeling, having all our senses well and truly drained.

iron maiden best tour

As Monty Python’s ‘Always Look on the Bright Side of Life’ filled the air, the buzz of chatter could be heard as 14,000 fans compared notes, discussed highlights and exited in sheer disbelief. Iron Maiden showed what a stadium band can and should be delivering to their fans; a fun filled journey to yesteryear and back, but with no sign of applying the brakes just yet. The best I have seen them? Pretty damn close. Outstanding!

Set List: Caught Somewhere in Time, Stranger in a Strange Land, The Writing on the Wall, Days of Future Past, The Time Machine, The Prisoner, Death of the Celts, Can I Play With Madness, Heaven Can Wait, Alexander the Great, Fear of the Dark

Iron Maiden Announce 2024 ‘Future Past’ North American Tour

By Charisma Madarang

Charisma Madarang

Iron Maiden is following a phenomenal performance at Power Trip earlier this month with a 2024 North American leg of its Future Past tour.

“We’re really excited to be bringing THE FUTURE PAST TOUR back to Canada and the United States next year. We know from the reaction of our fans at Power Trip and the shows we played in Canada recently that they really enjoyed hearing new songs from both Senjutsu and Somewhere In Time, and we’ve really enjoyed playing them!” said Bassist Steve Harris.

The trek has featured fan favorites alongside songs from the group’s 2021 studio album Senjutsu , which Rolling Stone praised as “one of the most rewarding and vital albums in Maiden’s catalog,” and 1986’s Somewhere In Time . According to a press release, Iron Maiden has played to over 750,000 fans at more than 30 sold-out shows across Europe in the summer of 2023.

Iron Maiden – Gig Review & Photo Gallery 1st September @ RAC Arena Perth, WA

Posted on September 2, 2024 by Gareth Williams

Iron Maiden Perth Josh Ludlow

Iron Maiden RAC Arena, Perth WA September 1, 2024 Support Killswitch Engage

Happy Father’s Day to all those who celebrate! What better way to mark the occasion than to spend a cool Sunday night listening to ear-bleedingly loud heavy metal. Checking back over my old gig reviews, I was reminded that Australia hadn’t seen the godfathers of NWOBHM since 2016 – an impossibly long time between drinks. But with pandemics, closed borders and cancelled tours behind us, the world is healing … to the sound of heavy metal.

An Iron Maiden tour is more than just a gig. The band craft an entire experience around each performance. Sure, there’re lights and effects, a whole theatrical extravaganza with the ever-enduring mascot, Eddie. But things kick off well before the Brits hit the stage with the chance to sink a few pints of Trooper Beer at the Dive Bar and Fan Meet . From 2pm, the usually soulless bar (inexplicably named ‘The Shoe’) was transformed into a hive of energy with more Maiden shirts than you could poke a stick at. This is a great PR exercise, but it also answered the age-old question: “Where are we having drinks before the gig?” My advice? Pace yourself, people. It’s still a while before showtime. But maybe one more Hazy Pale Ale…

Speaking of showtime, before we get to the main game there’s a little band called Killswitch Engage to warm us up. The self-described ‘drunk assholes from America’ only took about three songs to open up a circle pit which had security scrambling to catch crowd surfers.  Iron Maiden crowds are notoriously hard on opening acts, with responses ranging anywhere from disinterest and distant to outward hostility, a point acknowledged by frontman, Jesse Leach . Full credit to the American quintet for going all out to gain the respect of the Perth punters. In contrast to the headline act KSE’s set was stripped back. No backdrop, save for the back coverings over Maiden’s stage set. No monsters, just balls-to-the-wall, high-energy metal.

Closing out their set with a cover of ‘Holy Diver’ was a master stroke. Personally I don’t think the song needed a metalcore vocal treatment, but given the reaction of the crowd I may be in the minority.

With the UFO classic ‘Doctor, Doctor’ blasting over the PA followed by the accompanying roar, there was no doubt who everyone was here for. When the Vangelis composed end credits theme from Blade Runner hit and the lights dimmed, you could have heard a pin drop. That was until the intro to the classic ‘Caught Somewhere In Time’ blasted out before the band burst on stage and all hell broke loose. As mentioned it’s been a long time between drinks for Perth and this city needed its thirst quenched. If you’re the curious type and snuck a look at the setlist ahead of time, there were no real surprises. With an extensive back catalogue it’s a near impossible job to play everyone’s favourite, but with a fistful of tracks off 2021s Senjutsu intertwined with as many from the 1986 classic Somewhere In Time and peppered with a few deeper cuts, there really was something for every fan.

Bruce Dickinson commented to the room that the last time the band played here the room was only half full (actually it wasn’t – it was closer to three quarters full), but tonight the RAC Arena was wall to wall of humanity with Iron Maiden t-shirts as far as the eye could see. Bruce also has an odd fascination our local unique marsupial, the quokka, spending more than one mic break between songs praising Rottnest Island’s furry inhabitants. But we didn’t come for the chit-chat, we came for the music.

Iron Maiden live is a whole body experience, but Iron Maiden playing the classic ‘Can I Play With Madness’ is almost a religious one. There are few bands in the world who command the sort of loyalty Maiden do. It’s tribal, bordering on fanaticism. Maiden fans aren’t casual: they’re all in, and it’s music that spans generations. If you know it, your Mum knows it, your Dad knows it, and your sons and daughters know it. This was evident by the number of families in attendance.

Dad’s first Maiden album was Seventh Son of a Seventh Son , the kids cut their teeth on Senjutsu . Music endures, as does Iron Maiden . The Future Past Tour is as good as any I’ve seen.  Even if you’ve witnessed the band more times than you can count, don’t think of sitting this one out.

Absolutely unbeatable live!

Iron Maiden manager Rod Smallwood comments,

“Next summer we will finally get to play the huge European stadium tour for The Legacy of the Beast, and the new show will be even more spectacular so after our visit to Rock in Rio early September 2022 we decided to take it back to our fans in North America too, but in cities or venues we didn’t play in 2019, including some we haven’t visited in many years like El Paso, Spokane, Sioux Falls, Columbus, Hamilton, Ottawa and Greensboro.

We’ll be making a couple of additions and changes to the production and setlist to include some songs from our new album Senjutsu and are making the 2022 version of Legacy of the Beast even more spectacular than the acclaimed original show. You can be sure that we will still be featuring all the “hits” and the key elements of the original tour like the Spitfire, Icarus, Hell, flamethrowers and pyro and the rest – but we will shake it up a bit and Trooper Eddie will have serious competition in the new Senjutsu ‘world’ we are adding.”

Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson adds,

“We’re really looking forward to our return to North America so we can bring The Legacy Of The Beast show to places we didn’t get to in 2019 and to other cities we’ve not played for many years. I’m really excited about the new additions  and changes to the stage production and we can’t wait for everyone to see what we’ve got planned. The whole band has really enjoyed the Legacy Tour and now we just can’t wait get back out on the road to play live, have fun and see everyone again! ”

The Legacy of the Beast Tour production and set list is inspired by Maiden’s award-winning free to play mobile game of the same name which is available on iOS and Android platforms at  www.ironmaiden.com/play

A Trooper VIP Hospitality upgrade package is currently being planned and details will be announced closer to the tour dates for any fans who might want to enjoy additional at-show benefits.

Watch: IRON MAIDEN Kicks Off 2024 Australian Tour In Perth

British heavy metal legends IRON MAIDEN kicked off the 2024 Australian leg of "The Future Past" tour on September 1 at the RAC Arena in Perth.

The band's setlist was as follows, according to Setlist.fm :

01. Caught Somewhere In Time 02. Stranger In A Strange Land 03. The Writing On The Wall 04. Days Of Future Past 05. The Time Machine 06. The Prisoner 07. Death Of The Celts 08. Can I Play With Madness 09. Heaven Can Wait 10. Alexander The Great 11. Fear Of The Dark 12. Iron Maiden

13. Hell On Earth 14. The Trooper 15. Wasted Years

Fan-filmed video of the concert can be seen below.

"The Future Past" tour, which includes songs from both IRON MAIDEN 's most recent studio album "Senjutsu" as well as 1986’s seminal album "Somewhere In Time" , alongside other fan favorites, played to over 750,000 fans at more than 30 sold-out shows across Europe in the summer of 2023. The band also performed in Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver alongside their highly praised appearance at California's Power Trip festival last October which had Consequence stating: " IRON MAIDEN  set the bar high at Power Trip " and The Desert Sun saying " IRON MAIDEN didn't disappoint and delivered a hard-hitting performance to open the festival on a high note." Featuring one of the most spectacular stage productions of the band's career, it has received rave reviews in every city and country that IRON MAIDEN visited.

In a recent interview with Australia's "Everblack" podcast, Steve Harris was asked if there is any new music from IRON MAIDEN on the way. The MAIDEN bassist responded: "No, not at the moment. There's nothing in the works at the moment. But that's not to say there won't be.

" Bruce [ Dickinson , IRON MAIDEN singer] has only just done his solo tour. So he spent quite a long time just doing that. So, I don't know. Yeah. I mean, maybe we'll find time to cram [a new album] in somewhere. You never know."

MAIDEN 's latest album, "Senjutsu" , was released in September 2021 via BMG . The band's first LP in six years was recorded in 2019 in Paris with longstanding producer Kevin Shirley and co-produced by Harris . It features three tracks whose running time exceeds 10 minutes each.

For "Senjutsu" — loosely translated as "tactics and strategy" — the band once again enlisted the services of Mark Wilkinson to create the spectacular Samurai-themed cover artwork, based on an idea by Harris .

In the U.S., "Senjutsu" bowed at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart, charting higher than even the band's early classics like "Powerslave" and "The Number Of The Beast" . Nearly 90 percent of the LP's 64,000 equivalent album units earned came from pure album sales. The critically acclaimed double album debuted one place higher than 2015's "The Book Of Souls" and 2010's "The Final Frontier" , which both peaked at No. 4.

"Senjutsu" was MAIDEN 's 13th album to top in the Top 40 in the U.S.

According to Billboard , "Senjutsu" logged the second-largest week of 2021 for a hard rock album in both equivalent album units earned and in traditional album sales.

"Senjutsu" topped the charts in several European countries upon its release, including in Belgium, Finland, Germany, Italy, Sweden and Switzerland.

Steve Harris says, “Following the release of our latest album, Senjutsu, we updated the current Legacy of the Beast Tour a little by opening the show with the first 3 songs from it, with the Japanese Palace stage set. As it doesn’t make a lot of sense to repeat this for a Senjutsu album tour, we thought about other options and we’ve decided to revisit Somewhere In Time as that tour didn’t feature in the various retrospective history tours we’ve played over the years. They were based on our 80’s concert videos and sadly we did not film that tour (blame the manager!!).  We have had lots of requests from fans over the years for many tracks on it so we are now going to play them, plus of course a few others we know you will like! It will also be particularly satisfying to finally get to play some of the more epic tracks on Senjutsu, it’s been a long wait! 2023 is going to be an exciting time and we’re really looking forward to seeing everyone again in the UK, Ireland and around Europe”.

Manager, Rod Smallwood adds, “This combination of the two albums we feel is very exciting. We know fans want to hear those epic cuts on Senjutsu for the first time live and we think that by combining it with an iconic album like Somewhere In Time it will make for another really special tour for fans old and new! Of course, for a new album tour in Europe and the UK we will go back largely to the relative intimacy of arenas and we know fans will be very happy about that too!”

Iron Maiden is one of the most famous rock bands of all time. The English heavy metal band first formed in 1975, nearly fifty years ago. The band was started by the famous bassist, Steve Harris.

The makeup of the band changed early on, although some, like Nicko McBrain, Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, and Janick Gers, were some of the most consistent band members.

Additionally, the band added Bruce Dickinson as its singer in 1981, which many consider the move that brought Iron Maiden into one of the most popular heavy metal bands of all time.

Did You Know: Iron Maiden's 747 Once Collided With A Ground Tug

While on the South American leg of a world tour, Iron Maiden's Boeing 747 had an accident in Chile that required two new engines.

The band found great success in the late 1990s and the 2000s, especially after Dickinson returned to the band after a hiatus. His hiatus was spent learning to fly, as he was an avid aviation enthusiast, and he eventually earned an airline transport pilot's license. Overall, the band sold over 130 million copies of their albums.

The band became so popular that it performed on some of the biggest world tours of all time, including the Somewhere Back in Time World Tour and later The Book of Souls World Tour. These tours were so big that Iron Maiden required a large private jet to transport them and their equipment.

Both of the aircraft for these two tours were nicknamed Ed Force One , which was the winner of an online competition. Let's take a closer look at the aircraft that Iron Maiden flew on for some of their most popular tours.

The first Ed Force One was utilized on the Somewhere Back in Time World Tour, which lasted from 2008 through 2009. This aircraft is a Boeing 757-200, and is currently registered as N938FD.

This Boeing 757 was first delivered in March 1989, and it went to Air 2000, initially. Since then, the aircraft has also passed to Canada 3000 Airlines several times.

However, in March 2006, Astraeus Airlines, a charter company that was based in Crawley, United Kingdom , took control of the aircraft. Under the control of Astraeus Airlines, the aircraft was registered as G-OJIB.

During the time the aircraft was owned by Astraeus is when Iron Maiden chartered the aircraft for its international tour. This aircraft flew for the band over 90 different tour dates, which spanned 52 countries. It also featured a specific livery for the band, that Astraeus Airlines left after the tour was over.

However, after Astraeus Airlines went bankrupt in 2011, FedEx took ownership of the aircraft. It has been flying with the company since July 2012, after it was converted to a freighter aircraft. It remains in service to this day, per ch-aviation .

About the Boeing 757

The Boeing 757 is one of the most popular narrow-body airliners in the world. Boeing first designed the aircraft as a successor to its earlier narrow-body, the Boeing 727 .

It flew for the first time in February 192, and it was officially introduced the following January with the aircraft's launch partner, Eastern Air Lines. The aircraft was produced from 1981 through 2004, and over 1,000 total airliners were produced, with many of them still in service today.

The newly developed 757 featured several state-of-the-art features, including a supercritical wing with double slotted flaps, carbon-fiber reinforced wing surfaces, Kevlar fairings, and taller landing gear.

The aircraft was powered by either two Rolls-Royce RB211 turbofan engines or two Pratt & Whitney PW2000 turbofan engines. These each provide around 40,000 pounds of thrust depending on the variant. Overall, the Boeing 757-200 has the following specifications:

The second Boeing aircraft on tour

On Iron Maiden's next world tour, The Book of Souls World Tour, the band looked to fly another Boeing aircraft. However, this time, the band turned to the legendary Boeing 747-200 instead.

This aircraft provided enough room for the equipment and all personnel, and it did not require as much of a conversion as the previous aircraft.

The aircraft that Iron Maiden used for its 2016 world tour was first delivered to Air France in 2003. It operated it for over ten years, operating it as F-GITH.

However, it was transferred to Air Atlanta Icelandic in 2015. Just a year after the aircraft was received, Air Atlanta Icelandic leased it to Iron Maiden for their world tour.

After the tour, Air Atlanta Icelandic leased the aircraft to Saudi Arabian Airlines, where it saw regular service. However, it was officially grounded in March 2020, and, finally, the aircraft was scrapped, putting an end to its history.

About the Boeing 747

The Boeing 747 is perhaps the most famous wide-body aircraft that Boeing has produced. The large double-decker aircraft was first developed in the 1960s, as Pan Am wanted an aircraft more than double the size of the Boeing 707 to reduce its seating costs.

Boeing flew the aircraft for the first time in February 1969, and later introduced it with Pan Am the following year. It was produced in multiple variants from 1968 to 2023. Over 1,500 Boeing 747s were produced, with many still in service today.

The jumbo jet was produced with a partial double-deck and a raised cockpit, so it could easily be converted to a freighter. It is powered by four engines, either the Pratt & Whitney JT9D, the General Electric CF6, or the Rolls-Royce RB211 engines. Overall, the Boeing 747-200 has the following performance specifications:

  • Private Aviation
  • North America
