Between pasta and pizza, architecture and art and the splendid landscape, an Italy honeymoon was made for amore. The boot-shaped country in Western Europe captivates with its culture, scenery and romance. Whether couples spend time boating and swimming on the coast, visiting wineries in agricultural regions, or riding a gondola in Venice, they'll be seduced by Italy's natural and manmade charms.

Largely accessible from the East Coast, Italy is easy to reach from the US making it an ideal honeymoon destination . Couples can even fly direct to Rome, Milan and Naples, in addition to other cities across the country. The only downside is honeymooners may encounter high prices and crowds in the summer. (Once there, they may also never want to fly home.) Read on for the lowdown on planning your ultimate Italy honeymoon itinerary, from the best places and times to visit to the most helpful tips for navigating the country.

Italy Honeymoon Tips in this Article:

Is Italy Good for a Honeymoon?

The best times to visit italy, italy honeymoon planning tips, the best places to honeymoon in italy, the best all-inclusive resorts in italy for a honeymoon, fun things to do in italy for couples, what to pack for an italy honeymoon.

Portofino, Italy

A resounding yes, say Sridevi Chandra, travel advisor of Storybook Getaways and Gary Portuesi, managing director of Authentic Italy . "Romance is abundant throughout the country," says Portuesi. "In the north, you have Lake Como (where Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck honeymooned), plus Portofino and Venice," he explains. "In the South, you can visit the iconic and scenic Amalfi Coast and the island of Capri," he adds.

For a fairy-tale honeymoon destination in Italy, turn to Rome. "Its romantic streets and piazzas, historic sites and incredible food scene [make it perfect for couples]," Chandra notes. Otherwise, Puglia is another top-rated option. "[The destination is known for] its charming seaside setting away from the crowds," adds the travel advisor.

The Pros of a Honeymoon in Italy

Italy exudes romance. Couples will head to this popular destination for a multitude of reasons beyond pasta, mozzarella and nutella. The country's rich culture, beautiful architecture, picturesque coastal towns, delicious food and Tuscan wine region are all reasons enough to explore for days on end.

The Cons of a Honeymoon in Italy

There are no cons except that Italy has become very expensive in recent years, says Portuesi. In addition, Italy is a top global destination, making overcrowding a real issue for tourists and locals alike. To save money, avoid traveling during peak season, advises Chandra. Another plus: if you come in the spring, fall or winter, you'll experience fewer crowds and shorter wait times.

Venice, Italy

Visit during the spring and fall, for the most ideal weather and least crowds, suggests Chandra. Portuesi agrees, recommending skipping July and August, when it's hot and crowded. If you'd like to time your honeymoon around a festival or event, Chandra recommends the following:

February and March in Venice : The Carnival of Venice features street performances, concerts and boat parades.

Easter Week throughout the country : The Pope holds a special mass in St Peter's Square in Vatican City, in Rome. "The Good Friday processions are quite dramatic," says Portuesi.

April in Verona : Vinitaly wine festival is an annual international wine competition and exposition, notes Chandra.

Keep these general tourism tips in mind for the most successful, stress-free honeymoon in Italy:

Accessibility: You can fly direct into Rome, Milan, Venice and Naples from key gateway cities in the US (and not only in the Northeast), says Portuesi.

Language : While Italian is the official language, English is spoken widely, says Chandra. That said, if you venture into smaller towns and more remote areas, finding English speakers will be more challenging, adds Portuesi.

Currency : The currency in Italy is the euro. Credit cards are widely accepted, with Visa and Mastercard being the most popular providers. The best way to get local currency is via ATMs (called bancomats ), says Chandra. Note that most have a daily limit of €250, she says.

Time Zone : Italy observes Central European Time (CET) and switches to Central European Summer Time (CEST) when Daylight Saving Time takes effect. The time is five or six hours ahead of New York, depending on the time of year.

Holiday Closures: Monday is the traditional day of closures for museums and heritage sites, says Chandra.

Reservations : "Italy is on fire this year (and probably will be for the next few years), so planning well in advance will ensure that you get the best guides, drivers and hotel rooms," says Portuesi. Opt for skip-the-line tickets for attractions, recommends Chandra.

Crime : Watch out for pickpockets, especially in crowded areas and on trains, says Chandra. Like every major city and travel generally, stay alert and prioritize your safety.

Train and Bus Travel : Check if you need to validate your train or bus ticket, suggests Chandra. "For regional and regional high-speed trains, you need to validate your ticket if you bought it at an automatic ticket machine or a ticket office. Plus, tickets with the phrase " da convalidare " or " convalida " must be validated, she adds.

Bathrooms : Use the bathroom before leaving a restaurant, museum, or other attraction, recommends Chandra. Otherwise, make sure you have coins for the public facilities.

Pro tip: Invite a honeymoon planning expert to join your vendor team. Browse travel agents near you on The Knot Marketplace for Italy honeymoon expertise, reviews, testimonials and more.

For the ultimate Italy honeymoon itinerary, consider these top destinations across the country. Here's why each city or region is a standout choice for romance.

Amalfi Coast

Amalfi Coast, Italy

With a dramatic coastline, the Amalfi Coast epitomizes romance. Also one of our top editors' picks for the best honeymoon destinations of 2023 to 2024, there's a reason why honeymooners and couples flock to the region: the scenery is incredible, the food options and shopping are unparalleled and there's something in the air that is mesmerizing. In southern Italy between the Gulf of Naples and the Gulf of Salerno, the towns of Positano and Amalfi tend to be very popular, says Portuesi. Instead, he suggests spending more time in Sorrento, a gateway to Naples, Capri and Pompei; plus full of top-notch hotels and restaurants.

Tuscany, Italy

With rolling countryside, castles, olive groves and wineries, this agricultural region couldn't be more bucolic. Florence , its capital city, is beguiling enough for an entire honeymoon. Or explore the whole area, including Maremma, a less well-known area on the coast, recommends Portuesi. Along with being an ideal launching pad to visit the Bolgheri wine region (where Super Tuscans are made), this area is home to "extraordinary hotels," like Hotel Il Pellicano and L'Andana Resort , he says.

Sicily, Italy

Further popularized by the second season of HBO's The White Lotus , "Sicily is charisma and magic," raves Portuesi. "The dramatic coastline and its volcanoes are a big hit for romance-seekers, as are the new luxury hotels," he says. Consider escaping to Therasia Resort & Spa Vulcano on the remote island of Vulcano, one of the seven Aeolian Islands, he recommends.

Rome, Italy

"Rome is always a must, no matter how many times you've been," says Portuesi. For a romantic evening, he suggests hiring a private driver to take you on a sunset tour of the Seven Hills of Rome. That way, couples can experience panoramic views from different vantage points (such as The Garden of Oranges). Then, dine at Aroma Restaurant , at the top of Palazzo Manfredi, across from the Colosseum.

Venice, Italy

Famed for its winding canals, beautiful architecture and romantic gondola rides, this "floating city" is a Chandra favorite. Be sure to try the cicchetti (tapas-like finger food) and explore the outer islands, like Lido and Sant'Erasmo.

Sardinia, Italy

For couples attracted to more off-the-beaten-path destinations, visit this large island west of mainland Italy. Savor the picture-perfect beaches, rich history and crave-worthy wine and food (like Pecorino cheese, stuffed pasta and roast pig).

To truly relax—with no worries about money—book a stay at one of these all-inclusive spots. For a balanced honeymoon, consider heading to another area of the country (like Tuscany or Venice) beforehand or afterwards.

TH Marina Di Sibari Baia Degli Achei

Color Green Village Cesenatico

The top-ranked all-inclusive resort in Italy by Tripadvisor , this new green spot in the north is surrounded by parkland. It features a swimming pool, private beach, water park and multiple restaurants.

Orchidea Blu Hotel

Rated one of the most romantic all-inclusive resorts in Italy according to Tripadvisor reviewers , this seaside resort in the southeast features a rooftop terrace and pool. For the most scenic getaway, book a room with an ocean view.

TH Marina Di Sibari Baia Degli Achei

Located in Calabria in Southern Italy, this resort offers a beach, pool, fitness classes and canoeing. With a large pine forest and lake, the setting is tranquil and romantic.

Hotel La Bussola

Tripadvisor reviewers praise this Calabrian property for its romance, private balconies and views. Couples can spend days at the beach, sunbathing, swimming, or snorkeling. The restaurant at this three star "superior" spot prepares fresh regional specialties.

Italy is the type of country that requires repeat visits to fully understand its various regions. Here are just a few of the countless activities to experience across the destination.

The Vatican, Italy

Visit Wineries in Tuscany

Take a half-day tour of the famed Chianti wine region, including guided visits to two wineries. Taste six wines, olive oil, cheese, cured meats and bruschetta on this program rated an average of five stars by more than 1,000 Tripadvisor reviewers.

Go on a Cruise and Snorkel on the Amalfi Coast

Take a ride on a gozzo (a type of boat used in the area since ancient times) to Positano and back. With local captains at the helm, you'll snack on fresh fruit and sip refreshments (like prosecco and limoncello) while stopping by beaches and passing rock arches and sea caves. Then, snorkel and swim, exploring grottos and soaking up the crystal-clear waters.

Explore the Vatican in Rome

On this three-hour tour , skip the line to visit the Vatican, Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica. Led by a local guide, you'll see St. Peter's Square (where the Pope addresses crowds Wednesday and Sunday mornings) and countless famed works of art (like Michelangelo's "Creation of Adam" and the "Last Judgment" at the Sistine Chapel).

Take a Cooking Class in Sicily

During this cooking course , you'll learn how to prepare a traditional four-course meal (starring seafood), then sit down to enjoy it with wine, coffee and limoncello . Thanks to the small-group format, you'll get some personalized attention.

Pro tip: Add Italy honeymoon experiences to your gift registry so that loved ones can gift you one of these memorable couples activities. Don't forget to post some cute honeymoon photos to your wedding website and social feed for your guests to see.

One of the fashion capitals of the world, Italy is known for smart casual attire, says Portuesi. To fit in, consider avoiding sweatpants, shorts and flip flops. Because clothing in Italy is beautiful and well-priced, he suggests packing lightly, shopping while there and wearing what you buy. "[Italian clothes and shoes] will make for great souvenirs upon your return and your friends and family will know you've been to the bel paese (beautiful country), as Italy is known," he says. For everything else, we outline the basics in our packing list .

The Ultimate Italy Honeymoon Itinerary

italy honeymoon itinerary

Looking for a two-week Italy honeymoon itinerary that puts romance at the forefront? From exploring Florence and eating your way around Naples, to gondola rides in Venice and boat trips on Lake Como, this route has it all.

With your wedding drawing closer, it’s time to turn your attention to one of the most exciting parts of getting married: your honeymoon! From road trips through Spain to island hopping in Greece, there are plenty of amazing destinations in Europe to choose from.

But, if you’re considering Italy for your honeymoon, well you’re in for a treat! How about a road trip that includes the Renaissance hub of Florence, ancient monuments in Rome and iconic destinations such as Cinque Terre and the Amalfi Coast?

Florence

This ultimate Italy honeymoon itinerary is packed full of luxury hotels, stunning views, and enough delicious food and wine for both of you to have your fill!

As the home of opera, the Colosseum, and pizza (mmmm pizza!!), there are plenty of romantic cities in Italy for you and your new spouse to explore.

Vietri Sul Mare - Amalfi Coast, Italy

Ready to dive in and start planning your dream Italian honeymoon itinerary? Let’s go!

Coming up, I’ll share what I consider to be the best honeymoon destinations in Italy, complete with romantic activities and luxurious places to stay in each one.

If you’re looking for more inspiration, I’ve also written two detailed Italian road trip itineraries – one for Southern Italy , one for Northern Italy . If you already know you’d like to focus on one part of the country and move at a leisurely pace, you might want to use one of these routes to structure your trip.

When thinking about romantic honeymoon destinations in Italy, the Eternal City is definitely up there! Rome is a thriving destination full of history, culture, and beauty. From the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps, to the Colosseum, it’s a city packed full of legendary sights.

Stunning city of Rome, Italy

Double up your culture fix with a trip to Vatican City, which houses one of the largest collections of art anywhere in the world. Plus, don’t miss a tour of the Sistine Chapel while you’re there!

Vatican City, Italy

In terms of living the lavish honeymoon lifestyle, I’d recommend checking into the Anantara Palazzo Naiadi Rome . This world-class hotel is located right in the heart of the action in the Piazza della Repubblica, with a metro station just 100 yards away.

Anantara Palazzo Naiadi Rome

You can finish off your day with a sunset dip in the rooftop pool, before heading out for a feast of pizza and pasta. Don’t forget to leave space for a gelato or two!

Whether you’ve watched season two of The White Lotus and want to live the Sicilian dream, or you just want to eat your body weight in cannolis and arancini, Sicily is up there as one of my favourite regions in Italy.

Carve out time to travel around the east coast of Sicily, including Catania, Mount Etna, and the stunning coastal town of Taormina. Known for its Ancient amphitheatre , Taormina is a town that’s full of beautiful beach resorts , historic buildings, and amazing festivals. It’s the ideal base for a honeymoon in Sicily.

Taormina coastline - a perfect place to finish your southern Italy road trip itinerary

Let’s be honest, no Sicily honeymoon is complete without an epic tour of Mount Etna . With fertile volcanic soil, the banks of this active volcano also provide some of the best vineyards in Italy. What could be more romantic than a vineyard trip surrounded by scenery as picturesque as that?!

For your luxury honeymoon stay, I’d recommend booking a suite at San Domenico Palace in Taormina. Providing panoramic views out across the bay and an opulent infinity pool, is there a better place to sit back and relax after your wedding?

San Domenico Palace in Sicily

If you’re looking for some more honeymoon hotel options for your time in this region, I’d recommend reading my guide to the best beach resorts in Sicily . There are plenty more hotels as memorable as this one!

Tuscany makes an amazing amazing addition to any honeymoon in Italy. This spectacular region is filled with rolling hills, rustic architecture and warm Italian hospitality. It’s also home to some of the most beautiful towns and villages in the country, including the walled towns of Siena, Lucca, and San Gimignano.

best hotels in Tuscany

You could spend your honeymoon road tripping around these amazing towns and villages, stopping off at a vineyard or two along the way. Alternatively, you could choose a city break and book a stay in the Renaissance city of Florence.

With the world-class Uzzifi Gallery , the beautiful Boboli Gardens , a top culinary scene, and the iconic Ponte Vecchio, you’ll be spoiled for choice in this Tuscan wonderland.

But, why just go a wine tasting when you could stay in one of Tuscany’s vineyard hotels ? There are dozens dotted all over Tuscany, but one of the best is Borgo Scopeto Relais – a countryside estate surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. It’s the perfect place to relax after a hectic period planning your wedding!

Scopeto Wine & Country Relais

Gondola rides, vibrant piazzas, and picturesque canals… is there a more romantic honeymoon destination than Venice? Of course, a gondola ride on the Grand Canal with your new husband or wife is a must. Time it for sunset and you’re in for a treat!

Gondolas on the canals in Venice

If you want to double down on the romance, you could also book a day trip to Verona , home of the famous Juliet balcony that inspired Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet .

You could add in a historic tour of Doge’s Palace. With its beautiful views and architecture, it’s a great addition to your honeymoon plan.

Sunset in Venice

For a cosy place to cuddle up after a day of sightseeing, I’d recommend Hotel Metropole Venezia . With its uninterrupted views of the canals, prime location next to Doge’s Palace, and celebrity-level treatment, it just oozes romance.

italian honeymoon tour

I’ve always adored my trips to Lake Como. The mountain views, the shimmering blue lake, and the gorgeous lakeside towns offer the perfect escape. I’ve never been with my partner, but I’ve always felt like it’d be a very romantic place to visit! It’s a great destination to add to your Italy honeymoon itinerary.

Views over Lake Como, Italy

Honestly, there are so many things to do around Lake Como . From boat trips to Bellagio and amazing food tours, to skiing in the winter months , there’s a lot to love about this place!

For an added bit of romance, how about heading to a lakeside bar at sunset for a glass or two of local wine. Watch as the golden rays turn the lake the most beautiful colour. It’s a pretty perfect way to round off a romantic day in northern Italy!

Bellagio

If you consider yourself a foodie and love modern architecture, there’s no better honeymoon hotel than Il Sereno . With a Michelin-starred restaurant onsite and stunning Art Nouveau rooms, this grand hotel is 100% honeymoon-worthy!

Il Sereno Lago di Como

Amalfi Coast

Sweeping views, amazing cliff-side towns and beaches packed with glamorous types, there’s a reason the Amalfi Coast is one of the most popular honeymoon destinations in Italy., As well as picturesque coastal towns such as Positano and Ravello, you’ll also find the chic islands of Capri and Ischia nearby.

Find out where to stay in Positano, Italy

Now, you may have seen pretty photos of the Amalfi Coast on Instagram, but this region is characterised by huge lemon groves, sandy beaches, crystal clear water, amazing coastal hikes (including the Path of the Gods ), and charming towns and villages.

Of course, it’s also dappled in southern Italian sunshine for the vast majority of the year, so it’s the ideal place to sit alfresco sipping a glass of local limoncello with your lover.

Capri Italy

While there are endless luxury hotels to choose from in Positano , Sorrento and Capri , it’s hard to beat the old-world sophistication and luxury of the Luxury Villa Excelsior Parco . Located on the old grounds of a Roman Villa, this place is both historical and beautiful. You’ll never want to leave this amazing five-star hotel with its outstanding views!

Hot tub views from one of the best hotels in Capri - Luxury Villa Excelsior Parco

I hope this guide to visiting Italy on honeymoon helps narrow down the key destinations for you! I struggled to pick just a few, but I’d also recommend Puglia , Lake Garda and the Aeolian Islands if you want to expand your plans.

If you’d like any more help planning your Italy honeymoon itinerary, I’d recommend reading my two road trip itineraries. There are plenty more amazing destinations to visit and they should help you craft your route through the country.

Our Favourite Destinations in Italy

Terrace by the sea in Sorrento, Italy

Sorrento Honeymoons

Honeymoon moment: Sipping limoncello on a vine-shaded terrace overlooking the Bay of Naples.

Sorrento boasts some of the best views going, thanks to its clifftop location. Its main square is ideal for people-watching and al fresco coffee, while the old town’s narrow streets are perfect for wandering hand-in-hand.

Morning view of Amalfi cityscape on coast line of mediterranean sea, Italy

Amalfi Coast Honeymoons

Honeymoon moment: Strolling through the flower-filled clifftop gardens of Villa Rufolo in Ravello.

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most beautiful – and romantic – coastlines in the world, with pastel-painted villages, small sandy coves and spectacular views at every turn.

View from mount Solaro of Capri island at summer day, Italy

Capri Honeymoons

Honeymoon moment: A private boat ride to the Blue Grotto, a sea cave with brilliant blue waters.

Escape to beautiful Capri for a honeymoon to remember. Hire a boat out and admire the island from the water, take the chairlift up to the summit of Monte Solaro, or wander through the romantic Gardens of Augustus.

PMO.A.2007.116780.013.jpg-Hybris

Sicily Honeymoons

Honeymoon moment: Watching the sun rise over the ocean from clifftop Taormina.

Diverse Sicily has plenty to offer honeymooners, whether you fancy exploring ancient towns, swimming in natural gorges, hiking up a volcano or just relaxing on the beach.

Hills, olive gardens and small vineyard under rays of morning sun, Italy, Tuscany. Famous Tuscany landscape with curved road and cypress, Italy, Europe

Tuscany Honeymoons

Honeymoon moment: A bottle of Chianti and a table for two in Lucca’s medieval piazza.

Imagine winding lanes, rows of vineyards, rolling hills and medieval villages, and you’ve got Tuscany, one of Italy’s most honeymoon-worthy regions. Prefer a seaside escape? Try the sandy beaches of the Tuscany Coast.

Villa del Balbianello at lake Como in Italy

Lake Como Honeymoons

Honeymoon moment: A sunset boat ride, followed by a candlelit dinner in the romantic town of Bellagio.

Surrounded by dramatic peaks and edged with postcard-pretty towns and villages, it’s easy to see why Lake Como has captured the hearts of poets, artists and writers over the years.

Sardinia-2021-Coastline-View-001-050227-Hybris

Sardinia Honeymoons

Honeymoon moment: A picnic à deux on a secluded white-sand beach.

With sugar-white sands to rival the Caribbean, Sardinia is a fantastic choice for a beach-based honeymoon. Its charming villages and historic towns mean you won’t be short of things to do away from the beach, either.

Torri del Benaco town on Lago di Garda lake in Alps mountains, Verona province, Italy

Lake Garda Honeymoons

Honeymoon moment: Taking in the views from romantic Malcesine Castle.

As Italy’s largest lake, there’s plenty to see and do here (castles, wine-tasting tours, hiking trails), but the laid-back culture means that sipping prosecco by the water is as equally as acceptable as touring the towns that dot the lake’s edges.

Young couple at the Colosseum, Rome - Happy tourists visiting italian famous landmarks

Rome Honeymoons

Honeymoon moment: An aperitivo on the Piazza della Rotonda overlooking the Pantheon.

With thousands of years of history on show and some of the country’s finest restaurants, Rome makes a fantastic honeymoon destination. Be sure to throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain before you leave – it’s said to ensure your return to the city one day.

Venice-2023-Grand-Canal-Gondola-Diego-Gennaro-Unsplash-Hybris

Venice Honeymoons

Honeymoon moment: Gliding down a moonlit canal on a traditional gondola.

It’s hard to find a city as romantic as Venice. Glide along the maze of canals on a traditional gondola, sip coffee in style at a pavement cafe in Piazza San Marco, and marvel at the glittering mosaics in St. Mark’s Basilica.

Happy beautiful young couple holding shopping bags walking on city street - Two loving tourists having fun on weekend vacation - Holidays and shopping concept

Florence Honeymoons

Honeymoon moment: Watching the sun set over the Arno River from Piazzale Michelangelo.

Surrounded by rolling Tuscan hills, flame-coloured Florence is a sight to behold. Admire the famous Duomo and browse the jewellery boutiques along the Ponte Vecchio, then wander hand-in-hand along the banks of the Arno.

Italy has been a highly popular tourist destination for many years, but its popularity gained an extra boost thanks to the 2006 publication of Elizabeth Gilbert’s memoir ‘Eat, Pray, Love’, in which she describes her 4-month love affair with the country’s delicious cuisine and vivacious, smooth-talking inhabitants. The birthplace of Botticelli, Da Vinci, Titian and the Renaissance – not to mention gelato, tiramisu and a whole host of delectable pasta dishes – Italy is a country guaranteed to inspire and entice. From the historic streets of Rome, home to the Colosseum and the 2,000 year old Pantheon, to the hauntingly beautiful city of Venice, built across 117 islands, Italy is steeped in history, art and culture so rich it will take your breath away.

There are so many incredible things to see and do in Italy it can be very tricky to plan your itinerary. History and art lovers are sure to want to visit the Sistine Chapel, with its famous frescoes by Michelangelo, not to mention the Galleria Borghese and the Galleria degli Uffizi, which houses the priceless art collection of the Medici family. Boasting remarkable paintings by the likes of Giotto, Botticelli, Da Vinci and Titian, this museum is a must for appreciators of fine art, particularly from the Renaissance period.

For another unforgettable Italian cultural experience, treat yourself to a gondola ride through the island city of Venice. Catch your boat from the Hotel Bauer gondola stop and be serenaded by your gondolier as you glide along the city’s atmospheric canals, admiring the city’s stunning historic architecture.

Elsewhere in Italy, take in the eerie ruins of Pompeii, hike up Mount Vesuvius – unless you are visiting between the months of November and April – and explore the streets and leafy cloisters of Naples with its beautiful seaside promenade, ancient catacombs and bustling street market, the Mercato di Porta Nolana.

“We’ve Literally Had Zero Hiccups”

I highly recommend using Italy4Real. We have worked with them twice on two trips to Italy. Their recommendations are outstanding. They are extremely familiar with tours, guides, hotels, best travel spots, trains, etc…. All guides showed up on time and had a very warm, knowledgeable personality. So much so, we asked for the same guide again on our 2nd trip!!!!

Where to Go on Your Honeymoon in Italy

Romantic things to do on your italy honeymoon, where to stay: epic honeymoon hotels in italy, getting around during your honeymoon in italy, when to honeymoon in italy, what to pack for your honeymoon in italy, souvenirs to bring home from your italy honeymoon, classic italy honeymoon destinations.

No one honeymoon in Italy could hope to encompass all the romantic places in Italy–that’s what all those future milestone anniversary trips are for–but whatever your taste, there’s bound to be a delightful combination of destinations out there for you!

With its impressive history, iconic sightseeing (Colosseum, anyone?), and invigorating food scene and culture, Rome is a destination worth adding to any Italy honeymoon–in fact, it’s one of our favorite cities in the entire world.

As the capital of Tuscany and Cradle of the Renaissance, Florence is a city that drips beauty around every corner.

It’s also walkable, full of delicious food, less overwhelming than bustling Rome, and close to tons of romantic day trips, making it an excellent addition to any honeymoon in Italy.

As the hometown of some of the most famous artists in the world, Florence is the perfect honeymoon destination for art lovers and foodies alike.

Tuscan Countryside

How romantic is Tuscany? So romantic that we’ve already written an entire guide to taking a honeymoon in Tuscany!

If you want a classic honeymoon experience in Italy, complete with private wine tastings and idyllic villages, Tuscany is the place for you.

If there’s one city in Italy that simply screams romance, it’s Venice.

From its gondolas to its tiny canals to its quiet back streets (and enormous contrast to its most crowded piazzas!), Venice is an absolutely fantastic place to get lost–and whether we intend it or not, every day we spend there seems to turn into a romantic getaway.

Where to Propose in Italy: Venice Proposal on a Small Bridge

Of course the city of Romeo and Juliet belongs on any list of suggested honeymoon destinations in Italy–but even without the legend of its star-crossed lovers, stunning Verona is worth a visit.

Verona is an incredibly beautiful city, all interesting stories and lovely towers, and the Adige River flowing through it offers absolutely gorgeous views (for straight up river views, Verona definitely beats Florence–just saying!).

Cinque Terre

These gorgeous five Ligurian villages have been calling lovers for centuries: with their colorful buildings, lovely hiking trails, and stunning views of the sea–not to mention their delicious seafood and pesto–Cinque Terre is an incredible addition to any Italy honeymoon.

Amalfi Coast

Do you dream of sailboats, rocky coasts, and living in the lap of luxury during your honeymoon?

Then the glitzy, glamorous Amalfi Coast is for you!

Sail along the coast of Positano, wander through the village of Amalfi, stare down in wonder from the gardens of Villa Rufolo in Ravello, and hike the Path of the Gods.

After all that, it’ll be easy to see why the Amalfi Coast is such a classic honeymoon destination.

The absolutely glorious island of Capri has been attracting the rich and famous for millennia, from Roman emperors to movie stars to plenty of people in between–and Capri is easy to access from the Amalfi Coast, making it an excellent addition to any honeymoon in Italy!

Framed by the beautiful Alps, Lake Como’s epic natural beauty paired with its idyllic villages has made it into a tourist destination that attracts nature and city lovers alike.

Whether you want to hit the water, visit villas in Bellagio , go for a hike, or explore the streets of Menaggio, the area surrounding Lake Como has plenty to offer.

Don’t have enough time during your romantic escape to visit the lake overnight? You can still squeeze in a day trip to Lake Como from Milan !

Offbeat Italy Honeymoon Destinations

Are you and your new spouse less about classic (read: popular and sometimes crowded) destinations, and hoping to add a bit of a twist to your honeymoon in Italy.

If so, perhaps one of these adventures is for you.

For Road-Trippers: Sicily

Want to hit the open road, Italy-style? Then you’ll love Sicily!

The Meditteranean’s largest island is chock full of winding roads, tiny towns, a couple of fascinating cities, plenty of stunning beaches, some Ancient Greek ruins, utterly delicious cuisine, incredible wine, and even a volcano!

And, it’s all accessible for a fraction of the cost of what you’d pay to vacation in Italy’s more classic honeymoon destinations.

Consider flying into Palermo and then circumnavigating the island and hitting up some magnificent destinations along the way: Cefalu, Agrigento (especially for its incredible Valley of the Temples ), Taormina , and Syracuse are just a few places to consider adding to your trip!

For Foodies: Emilia-Romagna

If you and your beloved are the types who think that a detailed tasting menu or a chance to discover delicacies at their original source is the ultimate romantic trip, then consider heading to Emilia-Romagna!

While literally everywhere in Italy is home to a hyper-specific and incredible cuisine (seriously: Italian food is very regional), Emilia-Romagna is the original producer of some of Italy’s most beloved exports: parmigiano-reggiano, traditional balsamic vinegar, tagliatelle al ragu (aka spaghetti bolognese, though the original is much tastier), and many more.

Consider basing yourselves in Bologna to start, but definitely also pay a visit to Parma and Modena–and if you want to add a second country to your honeymoon, a quick visit to San Marino is an excellent option as well!

The Best Things to Do in Bologna: Climb Asinelli Tower

For Hikers: South Tyrol

Full of picture-perfect villages, stunning lakes, and the soaring Dolomites, couples who love the outdoors will adore a honeymoon in South Tyrol.

Base yourself in Bolzano or Cortina d’Ampezzo for easy access to just about anything you could want in the region, rent a car, and go crazy–the amount of hiking you can do here is just about endless.

Be sure to also make time for a few towns and cities–Bolzano is home to the fascinating 5,000-year-old man, for example, and the cuisine (which is far more Alpine than “typically” Italian as foreigners tend to think of it), the wine, and the culture (a blend of Italian and Austrian) are all worthy of your attention–when you can pull your eyes away from the mountains, that is.

[instagram url=https://www.instagram.com/p/Bjw_18mhnuL/]

For Beach Lovers: Puglia

There is a lot to love about Puglia , aka the heel of Italy’s boot: the food is fabulous, the road trips are epic, the landscape diverse, and the prices about as low as you can get in Italy… and most importantly for those looking to soak up some sun on their Italy honeymoon, the beaches are wonderful!

Puglia has plenty of incredible beach towns to choose from–consider starting with Polignano al Mare, Monopoli, or Otranto .

Be sure to tear yourself away from the beach a bit, though: Puglia’s Alberobello village, home to the unique trulli homes, is an absolutely unmissable place in the region.

And, though it is technically located in Basilicata instead of Puglia, you can’t miss Matera when you’re in this part of the world either!

Take a private gondola ride.

Private gondola rides may be pricey, but what better time to splurge than on your honeymoon?

Add a touch of luxury to your time in Venice and add a private gondola ride to your itinerary–bonus points for going at sunset.

Venice Grand Canal with gondola paddling across it--a must-see item for your 2 week Italy itinerary!

Go wine tasting in the countryside.

Wine tasting in the Italian countryside is as iconic as it is fun.

Even if you’re not incredibly knowledgeable about wine, visiting a winery and tasting several glasses (usually paired with delicious snacks or even a meal) is a memory that won’t fade anytime soon.

Honeymoon in Tuscany: Views of Tuscan Countryside

Charter a boat along the coast.

For the ultimate romantic experience on the coast, charter a boat for a day! Swim, snap photos of the views, eat a meal onboard–whatever you like.

This is incredibly popular around the Amalfi Coast, especially beautiful Positano, but you’ll be able to find a way to get out to sea in most coastal areas of Italy.

Take a cooking class.

Want to bring a bit of your Italy honeymoon back home?

Take a cooking class together and learn how to make a meal that you can share for the rest of your lives.

We loved this cooking class in Tuscany , and can’t recommend it enough!

Cool Things to Do in Florence: Cooking Class

Marvel at some of the world’s most beloved art.

Italy is home to some of the most impressive art collections in the entire world: Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Botticelli–these artists all belong to Italy.

Art lovers can’t miss the Uffizi or Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence, nor the Vatican Museums or Borghese Gallery in Rome!

Hike between magnificent towns.

Even if heading north to the Dolomites is too much to fit into your honeymoon in Italy, even novice hikers will find plenty of ways to enjoy some short hikes in Italy!

Consider hiking a small piece of the Via Francigena in Tuscany, or hiking from Monterosso al Mare to Vernazza in Cinque Terre!

Not only are the views amazing, but an indulgent, multi-course Italian lunch will also be extra delicious after getting active for a bit.

Go for a walk in a beautiful city at dawn.

It’s hard to imagine anything more romantic than strolling past some of the world’s biggest icons like Rome’s Colosseum, Florence’s Duomo, and Venice’s canals hand-in-hand with your beloved… especially if you’re doing it completely alone.

This is surprisingly easy to pull off, especially if you schedule your honeymoon in Italy outside the summer high season: just wake up at dawn.

We’ve admired many of Italy’s most famous monuments together without a crowd to be seen–all it takes is waking up extra early (don’t worry–the first bars tend to open around 6am, so you won’t have to wait long for a cappuccino and a cornetto!).

Zip through the countryside on a Vespa.

Is there any better way to explore the Italian countryside than by clinging onto your partner on the back of a Vespa?

Riding a Vespa together has always ranked among the most romantic things to do in Italy for us, and certainly belongs on any honeymoon to-do list!

Splurge on a magnificent Michelin Star meal.

Italy’s major cities–and some of its small towns and villages, too–are dotted with internationally acclaimed restaurants serving up truly mouth-watering cuisine.

One Day in Bologna Itinerary: Cured Meat

Where exactly you stay during your honeymoon in Italy will, of course, depend on where you go!

Check our detailed itineraries on individual cities for budget and mid-range options in each location (you can use the search bar in the top right corner of the screen if you’re looking for a particular place).

Here, though, we’ll highlight some truly dream-worthy properties–the type that are synonymous with taking a honeymoon in Italy.

Even if you’re planning on traveling on a lower budget for most of your trip, consider splurging for 1-2 nights on an unforgettable luxury experience at one of these places!

A little tip, though? Don’t book your best lodging too early in your trip–you’ll want to experience it once the jet lag has already had time to pass.

Le Sirenuse  — One of the most iconic hotels along the Amalfi Coast, and arguably one of the most famous hotels in all of Italy, is the dreamy Le Sirenuse.

Home to truly magnificent views, a perfect location in Positano, first-class amenities, and the Michelin-starred La Sponda restaurant, Le Sirenuse is the perfect place to stay on the Amalfi Coast for those looking for a splurge–if you’re planning your 3 day Amalfi Coast itinerary as part of a honeymoon or anniversary trip, this just might be the hotel for you!

Hotel Lungarno  — Nestled right against the Arno River and home to one of the best views of the Ponte Vecchio in Florence (not to mention some of the best views of the rest of Florence from their top deck), Hotel Lungarno is our personal “if we ever  really  want to splurge” hotel in Florence. Its romantic setting, beautiful rooms, and flawless location make it the ultimate honeymoon hotel in Florence!

Hotel Danieli  — If you’re looking for a true luxury experience for your 2 days in Venice–the kind of hotel stay that you’ll remember for the rest of your life–look no further than the iconic Hotel Danieli, located inside 3 former palazzos along the Riva degli Schiavoni.

Every detail has been looked after here, and everything from the furniture to the breakfast to the location (mere steps from the Bridge of Sighs) to the truly stunning lobby will ensure you have an absolutely unforgettable trip to Venice.

Within city centers like Rome, Florence, and Venice walking will almost certainly be your main method of transportation–but once you leave the city centers to travel between destinations, you’ll (usually) need to choose between taking a train, bus, plane, or rental car to your next destination.

Whenever possible, traveling by train is our absolute favorite way to explore Italy: it’s reasonably affordable when planned well, comfortable, and it can also be quite romantic!

We go into more detail about getting around Italy, including the pros and cons of different options, in our suggested 2 week Italy itinerary .

One Day in Milan Itinerary: Rooftop of Duomo

Each season in Italy brings a reason to visit–you really can’t go wrong with a honeymoon in Italy at any time of year, as long as you know what to expect!

You may have to contend with extra rain in the spring… but the blooming flowers across Italy can certainly help temper that blow.

Spring is an excellent time to capture photos around Italy, as everything looks so gorgeous when it is in full bloom… and the earlier in the season you arrive, the lower prices and smaller crowds you’ll experience!

Most Romantic Things to Do in Tuscany: View of Tuscan Countryside

Do you and your beloved dream of a honeymoon sprawled across Italy’s beaches–perhaps in Sicily, Sardinia , or Puglia? Then summer is the season for you.

Fair warning–a summer honeymoon will ensure that you experience the biggest crowds and highest prices of any season in Italy… but if you want to experience plenty of sunshine and swim in the sparkling seas, it’s still the right time for you.

Cliffs of Capri with bright blue water and boats visible to the left. Definitely consider a visit here when planning a trip to Italy!

Changing colors, cooling weather, and the delight of the harvest: fall is our personal favorite season to travel in Italy and the perfect time to take a honeymoon to central Italy in particular.

Fall is the best season for couples hoping for a honeymoon focused on food and sightseeing while avoiding the peak crowds of the summer.

Best Day Trips from Bologna: Arezzo Main Square

Winter in Italy is an underrated delight: the cities nearly empty entirely of crowds, prices drop dramatically, and as long as you don’t have your heart set on any particular coastal activities, you can do just about anything you want in Italy during the winter.

Of course, skiers can have a delightful time in Italy–head to South Tyrol and Piedmont for some incredible slopes–though those regions are definitely the exception to the rule when it comes to low prices during winter in Italy!

Travel Journal   — Take it from someone whose honeymoon is blur even though it was a mere five years ago: you’re going to want to remember this. Take a few minutes each day to journal about what happened–those memories are so, so precious.

There’s no better trip in your lifetime to splurge on souvenirs from Italy than on your honeymoon–for the rest of your lives, you’ll get to look down at the things you so carefully picked out and remember your incredible honeymoon in Italy.

Everyone likes to shop a different amount, of course, but we recommend picking up at least one thing to eat or drink, one thing to wear, and one thing to decorate your home together.

Oh, and a magnet, a mug, and (if you celebrate) a Christmas ornament–all very affordable on any budget, easy to carry home, and things that will make you smile fondly at the memories they hold for years to come.

Here are a few other suggestions!

Souvenir stand in Venice Italy

Just about any vineyard will ship bottles home for you, so go crazy.

If you and your new spouse enjoy wine, consider purchasing a few bottles of your favorite drink on the trip and shipping them home–and even consider saving the bottles to enjoy together on your subsequent anniversaries!

Hard cheeses. Limoncello. Dried pasta. Cured meats. Pesto.

You’ll be surprised at just how easy it is to bring the ingredients for entire Italian meals home with you–so leave extra room in your suitcase if you guys tend to splurge on local food when you travel.

Man cutting meat at a butcher shop with his back turned to the camera. He's wearing a hat and the photo is framed by hams hanging in the shop window.

So many memories are rooted in our sense of smell–so go a step further in creating nostalgia and give your honeymoon its own scent!

Pick up a local, luxurious fragrance early in your honeymoon, wear it throughout your trip, and when you get home, that smell will be associated with your romantic trip to Italy for the rest of your lives together.

If that sounds like something you’d love, we can recommend the Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy in Florence for a perfume-buying experience you’ll never forget, or as a backup, the Merchant of Venice flagship store in (where else?) Venice.

Interior of Merchant of Venice flagship store. There are red bottles of perfume lining the walls, and small stone statues of women decorating the shop.

Italian leather is known around the world for its quality, so consider adding a new purse, wallet, jacket, or pair of boots to your shopping list for Italy!

Italy is well-known for its paper production, and you’ll find absolutely beautiful paper stores all over the country as a result (but especially in Florence and Venice).

Want to send your wedding thank you notes out in style? Consider picking up some gorgeous stationery during your honeymoon in Italy to write them on!

Fun Things to Do in Florence: Shop for Stationery

Art & Decor

Oil paintings. Porcelain dishware. Murano glass pieces.

There’s no shortage of beautiful decor in Italy that you can pick up for your marital home–whatever the personal styles of you and your beloved, be sure to pick up at least a little something during your honeymoon in Italy that will decorate your home for years to come.

A perfect honeymoon in Italy: Your tried & tested itinerary

September 12, 2019 by Jeanette Cerami 2 Comments

My husband and I love to enjoy good food together, and there’s so much ancient beauty in Italy to experience, so spending almost two weeks in Italy was the natural choice for a destination for our honeymoon in Italy. Besides sitting fountain-side enjoying Caprese salad and a glass of wine, there’s also the beautiful countryside to take in while you’re traveling via train. This tried-and-tested itinerary for a honeymoon in Italy will take you to the highlights of Italy both attraction-wise and food-wise. This Italian itinerary is only for a ten-day trip, however, I include recommendations on easy day trips to add more time onto your honeymoon.

Knowing the geography well from my time studying in Bologna in college, I planned our honeymoon so we could start up north and slowly head down the boot on Trenitalia ; trains in Italy are consistent, clean, and very affordable. While planning for our trip, we knew we valued menu and environment over accommodations, so when possible we stayed in apartments/boutique hotels.

italian honeymoon tour

Just like booking flight travel, make sure to book all your train trips well ahead of time to save money on the Italian trains as express trains become more expensive the longer you wait. Make sure to note when you’ll arrive in each spot since checking into an AirBnB doesn’t usually allow to leave your bags at the front desk before your room is ready, like a hotel does.

We knew we’d generally want to have a nicer dinner, and our breakfast and lunch would sometimes be on the go (grab a panini as we head to the next landmark-type of thing), so most of our daily meal budget went for dinner; about ⅗ of the day’s allotment.

For sightseeing we decided to do most activities that were low budget; we didn’t do many museums because we knew that the historical architecture and outdoor artwork would be plentiful in these cities that are millennia-old. We also looked through recommended things to do in each city that were under $30 a day and didn’t require a lot of walking.  You can never have enough time in Italy, but we found that 10 days gave a good balance of relaxation and sightseeing, which is what we wanted out of our romantic getaway.

Your perfect Italian honeymoon itinerary

Day 1: bologna.

Couple on their honeymoon in Bologna, Italy

I studied a semester in Bologna my junior year of college, and it’s one of the most undercelebrated places in Italy I’ve ever been to. Even though it had been over 10 years since I had been (ugh, time keeps on ticking), so many of the things I love about the city were still there. It’s less than 2 miles/ 3 km in diameter within the city walls, so anywhere you stay is perfect for walking and taking in the sites by foot. (It’s best to take it easy on your first day flying from abroad!) We booked a pasta making class for our first night and this was a brilliant idea for many reasons:

We met at a market in the center of town to shop for the ingredients to make our 3-course meal, so we quickly became familiar with how the locals live day-to-day by chatting with the merchants and getting a mini-history lesson on everything we were about to make and eat.

As someone with rudimentary Italian language background, it was a great kickstarter to get my brain back in gear for getting around the country; the guides spoke English but encouraged me to speak Italian whenever possible. Besides the intimate experience of learning to cook local cuisine with native bolognese women, we also got their insider intel for the best spots to get pizza, aperitivo , and the namesake bolognese pasta dish. ( Read more about the best food in Italy to try here !)

Preparing food with someone is a labor of love, and it was the perfect way to orient us for married life; we love to eat and prepare food together now as it takes us back to that wonderful night.

Day 2: Bologna

After fully sleeping off our jet lag with bellies full of homemade pasta and local wine, we spent our second day exploring and taking in the history around us. Our guides recommended pizza by the Santo Stefano “Seven Churches,” so we strolled over there with a croissant and double espresso in hand. Like most churches in Italy, admission is donation based contribution. Well worth the cost, we spent the morning marveling at a sort of church-ception where basilicas were built around each other over the course of 10 centuries.

After that, we enjoyed pizza across the piazza from the church to fuel up for our next excursion: Le Due Torre. We climbed all 498 steps to get a beautiful 360° view of the city. This is a bit of a challenge so I don’t recommend if you have breathing or knee problems. If you are able to make the trek, it is very much worth it. We rewarded ourselves with some gelato (the first of many on our trip), and freshened up for dinner for a traditional bolognese lasagna dinner. (For a different experience, you’ll find quite a few food tours in Bologna , which is the foodie heart of Italy.)

Day 3: Bologna

San Luca Church outside of Bologna

Since the previous day in Bologna was spent doing a lot of walking and exercise, our last day was more for being shown around the city via train. We hopped on the San Luca Express for a panoramic tour of the city and up the hill to the beautiful Basilica di San Luca. The train has an audio tour in 10 languages, and there are return trips every 15 or 30 minutes back to the city.

Once at the top of the hill, you are delivered a majestic view of the hills that are Emilia Romagna, and the icing on the cake is the exquisite marble architecture of the centuries-old basilica. If you are feeling athletic, you can also walk to San Luca through 666 arcades. The walk is a moderate incline of a little over 2 miles/3.5 km. If you walk up, keep in mind you cannot take the train back as tickets are round trip and purchased in Piazza Maggiore at the center of the city.

Editor’s note: For those seeking a different experience, it’s very easy to take a day trip to visit Modena and a few nearby towns famous for their cheeses (Parmesan!). You can easily take the train here from Bologna on your own and look for day tours that will take you to cheese producers, prosciutto producers, and Modena balsamic vinegar producers! Everything is always more delicious at its source!

Day 4: Venice

Gondola ride in Venice seen during a honeymoon in Italy!

We took a quick 2-hour train ride from Bologna to our Venice where our hotel was nestled in a narrow street not 5 minutes from the train stop. Don’t be deceived by things seeming close to the train station to be “dangerous” or “loud”; the city layout is so that sound doesn’t travel and all the cozy nooks where your hotel and restaurants are, are just that: cozy.  We stayed at Hotel Villa Rosa .

Water travel is the way to get around Venice. We did the quintessential romantic ride in a gondola, just us two. Pro Tip: Gondolas are like medallion holding taxis in that there is a flat government rate per gondola. If you want to save money but get the same experience, you can find affordable shared gondola rides with a fixed rate online .

After walking around the city and testing our love and patience for each other on the first day (GPS is hard as there are hundreds of tiny streets and alleys that look the same), we got a two day pass on ACTV (the water bus) for the rest of our trip. The choice was obvious as it allowed us to see the other islands after walking over Ponte Rialto to Piazza San Marco on the first day.

Day 5: Venice

Giudecca Island near Venice, one of the most beautiful islands in Venice to visit.

With a water bus pass, we took full advantage of the surrounding islands: Murano- known for their beautiful blown glass artwork, this is a smaller, less crowded experience in Venetian atmosphere. You can take a tour of their glass factory, which was worthwhile. We picked up lovely gifts for family at a very reasonable price.

Giudecca is a quiet, more local gathering place just across the Giudecca Canal from San Marco, this is a nice place to take a quiet romantic stroll. We grabbed some gelato and spent about 30 minutes looking across the water to a civilization that’s been around for over 1000 years. We hopped right back on the ferry and took it the long way around Venice to enjoy some cichetti at a wine bar near our hotel.  (Lovers of beautiful architecture will also love colorful Burano!)

Day 6: Venice off the beaten path (or Verona)

Using our water bus pass for one more trip before catching the train, we headed to Lido for some beach time and food. Pro Tip: Always pack your swimsuit, you never know when you can use it! Lido has a beautiful free beach on the eastern side. It is only a 15-minute walk from the water stop. Grabbing a sandwich at the cafe bus (a double-decker bus across from the beach turned into a sandwich food truck) and spending a few hours at the beach was the perfect end to our Venezia adventure.

Juliet's balcony in Verona, Italy during a romantic honeymoon trip in Italy

Editor’s note: If you’re looking for a bit of romance, consider taking the train to nearby Verona, which is the supposed home of Romeo and Juliet. Here, you can see Juliet’s famous balcony (for free). Beyond the balcony, Verona is a beautiful city with a well-intact coleseum that is still used for operas and concerts. I was lucky enough to attend an opera here and those seeking a respite from the price in Venice will fall in love with Verona’s quiet charm. It’s just an hour on the train, so you don’t need to plan much for this romantic day trip from Venice!

Day 7: Rome/Tuscany

As you make your way to the train, you’ll want to stop and grab a block of hard cheese (pecorino romano, sharp provolone), a block of soft cheese (gorgonzola, smoked mozzarella), a baguette and a bottle of wine; this will make the quick trip to the beginning of modern civilization that much more serene. We dropped our luggage off at our boutique hotel, freshened up and headed to a nearby restaurant for dinner at La Carbonara . With 3 full days in Rome after our arrival it was nice to have a day to relax and plan out the rest of the trip.

Couple enjoying a romantic vineyard visit during their honeymoon in Italy

Editor’s note: Couples looking for a romantic experience might be interested in getting out of the cities for a bit of fresh air–and some wine of course. Although many associate Italian wine mostly with Tuscany, Italy has countless wine regions, so consider exploring Lazio. You’ll find many half day tours to the Frascati region , which produces nice DOCG whites and reds, that include transportation, wine tastings, and snacks. All you need to do is sit back and relax!

Day 8: Rome

Newly married couple outside of the Roman Coliseum in Rome, Italy enjoying their honeymoon in Italy!

Rome is a big beautiful metropolitan city, so the best way to enjoy the city is in sections. This day was our “Ancient Rome tour”: We bought a combo pass for The Colosseum and The Roman Forums , which is easily 3-5 hours of walking and learning about the ancient city. To get to the area, you get to pass by the monument of Vittorio Emmanuele, which sits atop the modern Rome that looks down at the ancient landscape. We recommend bringing waters with you as there aren’t many places to buy food and drinks nearby. Comfortable shoes are also a must!

Day 9: Rome

Couple enjoying an espresso in Rome Italy during their honeymoon

This day was our “Food and Beauty tour” day. We spent the day in the Municipio area. Our first stop was Sant’ Eustachio Il Caffè for some of the best and most coveted cappuccino in all of Rome. (The recipe is a secret!) Pro Tip: If you want to sit and enjoy your breakfast, the cost is more than just taking coffee and pastries to go.

We strolled over to The Pantheon , then stopped for a quick meal at a “fast food” pasta place: Il Pastaio di Roma. Within minutes we were able to see Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain, and then make our way to the Spanish Steps for sunset. Lots of great people-watching and love is in the air around those last three spots, for sure. We finished our night with the best meal we had in Rome at Piccolo Arancio.  (If you’re looking for a bit more action, you can always opt for a street food tour of Rome !)

Day 10: Rome

Newly married couple enjoying a visit to the Vatican during their honeymoon to Rome!

Our final day in Italy was spent as a “Holy Tour” day. We took an early morning bus ride to Vatican City so we could get in line early for the Vatican Museums. You can buy tickets to skip the line to get into the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel , but if you get there early, the line moves pretty quickly.

If you aren’t a fan of crowds and don’t feel any need to see the iconic Sistine Chapel, you may want to skip the museum and just opt for St. Peter’s Basilica. The Basilica is free and has enough opulence and beauty for a lifetime of church visits.

Pro Tip: Knees and shoulders must be covered for men and women, NO EXCEPTIONS . They have loosened their requirements since I last went, but vendors are selling scarves outside for tank topped summer visitors, and shorts above your knees are still a no-entry. (Save money by bringing your own scarf with you !) This is also a good final day trip because you can finish up early enough to get back to your hotel, pack, rest, and get ready for an early trip to the airport the next day.

If you’re looking to extend your trip, we recommend also considering heading further south to Naples and the Amalfi Coast. Still, you’ll find so many other charming regions off the beaten path, such as Puglia. Alternatively, you might want to add time between Venice and Rome to visit Tuscany and Florence! If you’ll have more time up north, we recommend taking extra time to explore Milan, Turin , and the Piedmont region !

How to Plan a Romantic Honeymoon in Italy

Experience la dolce vita as newlyweds.

In This Article

From relaxing seaside hamlets to glamorous metropolitan cities, the European country that gave us pizza, pasta, gelato, and much more offers something for every kind of couple. Honeymooning in Italy is simply timeless; travelers are spoiled for choice when it comes to the romantic experiences they can have while visiting this Mediterranean gem.

“In Italy , you can have a really varied itinerary, and traveling between places is relatively easy,” says luxury travel advisor Katie Jacobson. That’s likely why Italy has been the top requested honeymoon destination for her clients.

Meet the Expert

Katie Jacobson is the founder of Ever After Honeymoons , a California-based luxury honeymoon and travel planning outfit. In business for over 12 years, Jacobson plans honeymoons in locations all over the world.

But with so many destinations packed into a country roughly the size of California, how do you begin to plan your dream trip? With an outline of the best options, of course! Read on for a helpful overview of how to honeymoon in Italy, including the best season to visit, the average cost, our top romantic hotels, and places you should definitely consider adding to your must-see list.

Planning Your Italy Honeymoon

“The best time to visit Italy is May to mid-June, but September is my favorite,” says Jacobson. “The weather is really nice, but you don’t have as many crowds as in the peak summer months. Also, the sea has had all summer to warm up, so it’s a great time for swimming and boating on the Amalfi Coast.”  When it comes to when to avoid going, Jacobson notes that July and August are typically the busiest months, and when museums and historical sites will be packed with throngs of tourists. August is also when many Europeans themselves head on vacation, which could mean that a lot of smaller, family-owned establishments in Italy will be closed.

Per Jacobson, a ten-day or two-week trip is ideal—as is spending a minimum of three nights in each place. “Otherwise, things are too rushed,” she says. “I don’t ever want couples to feel like their honeymoon is just packing and unpacking.” A two-week honeymoon in Italy also gives you time to relax and kick back before gearing up for more ambitious adventures. Jacobson always aims to construct her itineraries accordingly. “After the wedding, traveling, and jet lag, I think it’s nice to start somewhere really relaxing,” she explains. “Then you’re more ready and excited to explore a city or be active.”

If your trip runs two weeks, that leaves time to explore three-to-four destinations at a comfortable pace.

  • Language: Italian
  • Currency: Euro
  • When to Go: May through mid-June or September through October.
  • How Much Time to Spend: Ten days to two weeks is the ideal time to plan for the entire trip. Three nights is the best amount of time to stay in each destination within Italy.
  • Getting There: Dozens of international flights travel between the U.S. and Italy every day, with JFK and Newark International Airport as the primary airports offering nonstop options.
  • Transportation: Italy is a very travel-friendly country. Travelers can get around by renting a car (this is especially common for those doing country-wide honeymoons, but parking in cities is challenging) or taking domestic flights between destinations. However, trains are the most accessible and affordable mode of transportation in Italy, with multiple train operators and dozens of itineraries linking all of the major cities and smaller towns, too. Italy's major cities are very walking-friendly, though you'll also see bikes, mopeds, and taxi cabs on the streets.
  • Must-Pack: Sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, good walking shoes, sandals, breathable layers, bathing suits, and long sleeves, long pants, or long skirts for touring conservative areas (like the Vatican).

Places to Stay During Your Italy Honeymoon

With so many incredible hotels throughout the various destinations within Italy, you'll want to do your research when it comes to accommodations. From seaside resorts along the Amalfi Coast to sleek, modern hotels nestled into palazzos in Venice, these are our top picks for the best honeymoon hotels in Italy.

Courtesy of Aman Venice

Aman Venice

An obvious choice for romance, it's nearly impossible to go wrong by staying at an Aman property, and the luxury hotel brand's Venice output is exceptionally romantic. Nestled into the floating city's Palazzo Papadopoli, guests can expect a beautiful balance of Rococo artwork and Jean-Michel Gathy interiors, art-forward suites (think frescoes and classic Italian reliefs) with prime views of the Grand Canal, and private gardens.

Courtesy of Grand Hotel Tremezzo

Grand Hotel Tremezzo

This iconic art nouveau gem on the western shores of Lake Como is the epitome of Italian romance; three umbrella-dotted pools, a private beach, an on-site park, and sweeping views of the Grigne Mountains are just a few of its many selling points. Couples can either stay at the sumptuous main property or explore one of the smaller nearby villas like Villa Passalacqua , an 18th-century mansion-turned-hotel with stunning lake views, 24 individually-appointed rooms, and an intimate setting for couples in search of an especially private escape.

Palazzo Avino

For a particularly memorable stay along the coast in Ravello, book a suite at Palazzo Avino , a five-star hotel built in a 12th-century villa with a Michelin-starred restaurant. Interiors are light, airy, and elegant, and the cliffside location is a top-tier Amalfi Coast experience.

Ca' di Dio

Nestled along the harbor in Venice sits Ca' di Dio , a modern darling of the Venice hotel offerings, designed by renowned architect Patricia Urquiola. Wood paneling and Murano lamps are just a few of the enticing, fresh design elements throughout the property, which feels like a respite from the hustle and bustle of Venetian streets. Couples should be sure to give the on-site restaurant, Vero, a visit (or two).

Courtesy of LA ROQQA

After three years of renovation, the 55-room-and-suite LA ROQQA , tucked away in Tuscany's Porto Ercole, has been transformed into a chic, contemporary getaway that's perfect for couples and honeymooners. As of June 2024, the hotel now boasts the ultra-cool Isolotto Beach Club, where guests can take in the sun and sea from plush chairs or enjoy oceanfront drinks from the beachside bar. If you're looking for more formal dining during your stay, the hotel's rooftop restaurant, Scirocco, which affords guests views over Porto Ercole and the Corsini Botanical Gardens, is the spot to dine. (Don't miss the seemingly simple but surprisingly complex spaghetti 8 pomodori.) And, with a focus on sustainability (the property is plastic-free, donates each day's unused food to the needy, and was renovated using traceable materials), it's a post-nuptial getaway destination you can feel very good about.

Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria

Situated on a stunning cliffside in Sorrento, overlooking the glimmering Gulf of Naples, this five-star luxury hotel is the stuff of honeymoon dreams. Just as elegant as it is historically significant (it's been in operation since 1834), the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria will whisk honeymooners to a place of Italian romance. With 81 beautifully-appointed rooms and suites, locally-sourced cuisine served by the waterfront, and an ever-attentive staff, this should be a special stop on your Italian itinerary.

Courtesy of Le Sirenuse

Le Sirenuse Positano

Striking from the inside out, Le Sirenuse features light and airy, sophisticated rooms with an elegant yet home-away-from-home feeling that will leave honeymooners debating whether stay in bed a little longer or head into the lively streets of Positano (you can't go wrong with either decision). From the outside, the iconic red-and-white exterior pops against the pool and the glimmering Mediterranean. The noteworthy restaurants on-site, La Sponda and Aldos', are both worth booking for at least one meal,

Borgo Santo Pietro

Nestled amongst the rolling hills and vineyards of Tuscany, this five-star boutique hotel was once a healing retreat for medieval pilgrims. Between the multiple restaurants, the relaxation spa, the farm-to-plate dining concept, and a bountiful 300-acre estate for exploration, this is the perfect countryside retreat for the discerning couple.

Brunelleschi

Located in Florence's Renaissance district and housed in a sixth-century Byzantine tower, Brunelleschi emulates romance from every corner of the property. With close proximity to city attractions like the Uffizi galleries, the Ponte Vecchio, and Palazzo Strozzi, rooms and suites are refined and offer stunning views of the city skyline.

Courtesy of Hotel Castello di Reschio

Few experiences are like that of Reschio , a sprawling luxury estate nestled between Umbria and Tuscany. Stay in the property's castle—one that is over 1,000 years old—or opt for one of the seven available farmhouses and spend days playing tennis, exploring the pristine, lush grounds (a whopping 1,500 hectares), riding horseback, and admiring the interior's bespoke design and antique collections.

Eitch Borromini

Eitch Borromini , located within a 17th-century palace, occupies prime real estate in a particularly romantic corner of Rome overlooking the Fountain of the Four Rivers by Bernini and the charming Piazza Navona. With no detail left untouched, the hotel is the perfect respite from the busy streets of this Italian metropolis. Couples should make sure to see both the on-site art gallery and the stunning rooftop bar.

Things to Do During Your Italy Honeymoon

With so many desirable destinations spread across this Mediterranean paradise, you'll want a solid idea of what to expect well before you begin plotting your itinerary. Here are our top recommendations for romantic things to do in Italy, conveniently broken down by location.

Explore the Amalfi Coast

Jacobson’s top pick for a seaside honeymoon destination in Italy is the Amalfi Coast . Situated about an hour south of Naples on the Tyrrhenian Sea, the picturesque cliffside towns are best known for their beaches, but there’s so much more to do. “It’s great for hiking, there are wineries, and cooking classes are really popular in the area,” says Jacobson. Though Positano is perhaps the most well-known, Jacobson’s favorite town in the region is Ravello, which is situated a touch higher in the hills, and, as a result, offers stunning views of the fishing villages below.

Hike Along Cinque Terre

Travel east from Portofino to reach these five picturesque villages in the La Spezia Province of Liguria. Known for pastel-hued homes built into seaside cliffs, the small towns of Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore and the surrounding hills became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997. Several walking and hiking paths connect the villages, with Via dell'Amore and Sentiero Azzurro being the most popular, but check conditions with a local tourist office before you head out—landslides and ongoing construction may mean major parts of your chosen path will be closed.

Visions Of Our Land /Getty Images

Spend a Day in Florence

The capital of Italy’s Tuscany region is known for walkable cobblestone streets and the world’s largest collection of Italian Renaissance art. You’ll find Michelangelo's  David  at the Accademia Gallery, and Botticelli’s  The Birth of Venus  at the Uffizi Gallery, an absolute treasure trove of classic works from the once-private collections of the Medici banking family, which wielded considerable power over the city from the 15th through 18th centuries—and produced four popes.

For couples looking for romance on the water, Jacobson has booked sunset cruises down the Arno River, which runs through the heart of the city. Though Florence is famed for its street food—and there are many tours available to guide you through sampling it all—be careful about where you consume your snacks. In 2018, the city  banned eating on the sidewalk  in the historic center.

Book a Hotel at Lake Como

Live like  George and Amal  with an excursion to Lake Como, a beautiful body of water nestled at the base of the Alps in northern Italy’s Lombardy region. Ninety minutes north of Milan, the area is filled with grand villas that were once the countryside homes of the city’s nobility. Beyond relaxing at any one of the opulent waterside hotels, you can also hike the hillsides and book boat trips for watersports. Also good to know: Because of its northern location, Lake Como is an especially enjoyable destination during peak summer months, because the temps are noticeably cooler.

Explore Milan

Though perhaps more frequented by business travelers than honeymooners, this major northern Italian city, capital of the Lombardy region, should still be high on your must-visit list—particularly for the sartorially inclined. As one of the major global fashion capitals, it’s home to high-fashion brands such as Armani, Prada, Missoni, and Versace.

Beyond great shopping, there’s also Il Duomo, the largest church in Italy, which took almost six centuries to complete, and The Last Supper mural by Leonardo da Vinci, which can be seen at its original location at the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie. In lieu of fancy dinner reservations, you may want to spend your evenings hopping between eateries for aperitivo, particularly in the lively canal-side neighborhood of Navigli. Milan is well-known for its over-the-top approach to happy hour, during which bars and restaurants put out lavish spreads of apps to enjoy alongside your drinks.

Visit Pompeii

In 79 A.D., the volcano Mt. Vesuvius erupted in the Gulf of Naples and wiped out the nearby Roman city of Pompeii in the process. Thick layers of ash preserved the remains of the city surprisingly well, and today, you can walk through excavations that paint a remarkably complete picture of what life was like there almost 2000 years ago.  Recent discoveries  make it even more exciting to visit right now, as does the fact that the city of Naples, the birthplace of pizza, is less than a 30-minute drive away.

See Portofino

The Italian Riviera is a coastal strip in northwest Italy’s Liguria region that winds around the Ligurian sea. (Head west along the water for a few hours and you’ll eventually reach Nice and Cannes.) The electric blue waters are dotted with the colorful buildings of quaint fishing villages—Camogli and Santa Margherita Ligure being two of the more low-key—but for a taste of the chic life, plan to stop in Portofino. Though you can’t lounge on the beach, you can peruse high-end boutiques, drink limoncello cocktails and eat fresh seafood at waterside restaurants, and maybe even do a little celeb-spotting. (Everyone from Jennifer Lopez to Beyonce and Jay-Z has vacationed in town.)

Head to Puglia

Forming the heel of the Italian boot, this coastal region on the Adriatic Sea is an up-and-coming destination with American travelers, and for good reason. Hotels are opening at a rapid clip to take advantage of the turquoise waters and white sand, but many other travelers are drawn in by the slower pace of life that emanates from the surrounding farmland. (For the full rustic experience, book a farmhouse-style masseria.)

Situated further inland, Lecce is known as the “Florence of the South” because of its impressive Baroque architecture, while Ostuni, less than one hour north, attracts visitors with its white-washed buildings. To really vacation luxuriously, book a suite at  Borgo Egnazia , which hosted  Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel’s 2012 nuptials .

Experience Rome

If you’ve never been to Italy, the country’s capital city should absolutely be on your itinerary. Situated just off the center of the western coast, Rome is Italy’s most populous city and home to several world-renowned historical ruins. Built between 70 and 80 A.D., the open-air Colosseum amphitheater was used for public spectacles such as gladiator battles, while the Pantheon, one of the best-preserved monuments of the same era, served as a house of worship for the Roman gods. Love to people-watch?  Head to the Spanish Steps and nearby Trevi Fountain, a massive ornate Baroque fountain set in the center of the city, where tourists and locals alike are known to gather.

Beyond bucket-list tourist attractions, there are also many charming neighborhoods to explore in Rome. Jacobson’s favorite? Trastevere. “It’s so charming, with its small pedestrian-only walkways,” she says. “It’s the kind of place where you can go to a restaurant with six tables and hear only Italian spoken because there aren’t as many Americans.”

Escape to Sardinia

Another less well-known destination amongst non-European travelers, the Mediterranean island of Sardinia offers a bit of everything, as well as a taste of life at a deliciously slower pace. There are romantic resorts and white-sand beaches (Costa Smeralda and Spiaggia di Piscinas are both popular), but also rugged mountains and ancient stone-walled ruins (nuraghi towers being the most common). For a unique foodie experience, visit during the Feast of San Francesco in May or October for a chance to try su filindeu, the world’s  rarest pasta .

Adventure in the Dolomites

Outdoor adventurers flock to this remote mountain range in Northeastern Italy for skiing and snowshoeing in the winter and mountaineering in the summer. With parts originally belonging to Austria until Italy annexed them after World War I, Dolomite food and culture can feel unique from the rest of the country: In certain places, expect lots of strudel and sauerkraut, and to hear German spoken more commonly than Italian. Two must-dos: hike to Lago di Braies, a remote Alpine lake where you can rent wooden rowboats come summer, and the  Messner Mountain Museum Corrones , where you’ll explore the history and science of mountain climbing in a futuristic Zaha Hadid-designed structure.

Eat and Drink Your Way Through Tuscany

Italy’s most well-known wine region is located in the west-central part of the country. With rolling hills, expansive sunflower fields, and rustic country estates, it's every bit as pretty as the movies paint it. Yes, there are vineyards aplenty—Jacobson especially loves  Castello di Albola , as well as options in the Bolgheri region—where you can see the grapes and sample chiantis, but don’t forget about the olive oil. For a bit of history, head to Siena—the historic city center is a UNESCO World Heritage site —or the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The towns of Montepulciano and San Gimignano, both easy day trips from Florence, also paint a pristine picture of medieval Italy.

See Vatican City

You don’t have to be Catholic, or even religious, to be wowed by the home of the highest leader of the church. Though it’s fully surrounded by Rome, the 109-acre Vatican City is technically its own city-state, with its own government. Here you’ll find the Sistine Chapel, where the massive ceiling is adorned with elaborate frescoes painted by Michelangelo, and room after sumptuous room of historical treasures in the many Vatican museums. Especially breathtaking: The Gallery of Maps, and the four Raphael rooms.

Wander Through Venice

Located high in the eastern portion of the boot in the Venetian Lagoon, Venice is known for water. In lieu of roads, many of its main passageways are canals, which makes romantic gondola rides and water taxis an integral part of a visit. To marvel at ornate architecture from a comfortable cafe seat, head to Piazza San Marco, the city’s largest and most important square. (Be sure to order a bellini—the cocktail was invented in Venice.) To take in priceless works of modern art, schedule a visit to the  Peggy Guggenheim Collection , where you’ll see paintings and sculptures from the Cubism and Surrealism movements. To shop colorful glassware and pose for pics against rainbow-hued homes lining canals, head to the nearby islands of Murano and Burano.

With so many winding streets and hidden gems to explore in a city like Venice, it can feel overwhelming to figure out where to head first. For that reason, Jacobson recommends hiring a guide for a few hours on your first day. “They can help you get oriented, share off-the-beaten-path areas, and tell you about their favorite restaurants,” she says.

Where to Eat During Your Italy Honeymoon

Needless to say, one of the most enticing elements of planning an Italian honeymoon is, of course, the cuisine. And the wine. The pasta. The pizza. The gelato. Need we say more? To help you get some reservations on the books, here are a few of our top recommendations for romantic meals around Italy.

La Pergola is an exquisite gastronomical experience—if you can get a table there. Located in Rome Cavalieri, a Waldorf Astoria Hotel , this restaurant sits perched high atop the Eternal City and is considered one of the most beautiful restaurants in Italy. It boasts three Michelin stars under the guidance of famed chef Heinz Beck, so this is an experience you'll want to book well in advance of your trip.

Located within the aforementioned Le Sirenuse, La Sponda's cuisine is just as stunning as the vine-covered walls of the restaurant's interior. The menu features dishes inspired by the traditional food from Naples, with a focus on fresh, local ingredients.

Enoteca Pinchiorri

This three-Michelin-star restaurant in Florence is well worth booking in advance. Honeymooners can expect fine Tuscan cuisine on beautifully-plated dishes at an establishment with technique, skill, and refinement as its core philosophy.

Felix Lo Basso

Just steps from the Duomo, this Michelin-star outpost in Milan has views and atmosphere (an open-air kitchen) that are just as important to the dining experience as the excellent, artfully-curated Italian cuisine itself.

Amerigo 1934

Located in the small town of Savigno near the Apennine mountains within Bologna, this low-key trattoria with a long-standing grasp on its Michelin star is known for its truffle-inspired dishes and traditional, expertly-crafted Italian fare.

Pizzeria Antonio E Gigi Sorbillo

If you find yourself in Naples in search of some of Italy's best pizza, it's worth the one-to-two-hour wait for a pizza at Sorbillo, arguably the best pizza spot in the city, where these delicious, hand-crafted pizzas made of organic ingredients are a Neapolitan favorite.

Hosteria Giusti

Diners have to walk behind a retro-style delicatessen counter to reach this delightful, authentic Modena restaurant , which offers lunch-only—expect traditional Italian fare in a beautiful setting, and just four tables, so reserve far in advance. (You may have seen it featured on an episode of Netflix's Master of None !)

Budgeting for an Italy Honeymoon

As with any destination, the cost of a honeymoon in Italy will vary greatly, depending on when you visit, how long you visit, and the level of luxury you're looking for in accommodations, meals, and activities.

You’ll need to budget for tourist taxes levied upon accommodations in certain cities, as well as VAT, or value-added taxes, on many goods and services. In Italy, the tax is called L’imposta sul valore aggiunto, and shows up as the acronym “IVA” on receipts. The standard rate is rather high—22 percent—but non-European Union residents can claim some of that back when exiting the country. Italy has one of the highest refund rates of all European Union countries, but it also, unfortunately, has one of the highest minimum spend amounts as well.

Italy Honeymoons

Experts in Italian honeymoons

Italy is the romantic capital of the world, with its enchanting cities, breathtaking coasts, dazzling culture and world-class cuisine.

Italy’s cities are rich in art and culture. Rome is brimming with reminders of its empirical past, whilst Venice and Florence are dense with Renaissance art, Milan is renowned as one of Europe’s financial and fashion centres, and the home of Romeo and Juliet - Verona is a romantic gem.

Glorious Lake Garda and Lake Como are famed for their natural beauty and magnificent scenery. The beautiful resort and dramatic bay of Portofino epitomises the glamour of the Ligurian coast in the northwest. Set in the heart of Tuscany’s beautiful landscape is the stunning medieval town of Siena while a pretty town square, a handful of shops, restaurants and two fabulous historic villas form the chic resort of Ravello, perched high above the Amalfi Coast.

For a romantic coastal honeymoon, the heavenly island of Sardinia offers beautiful white beaches and turquoise waters with a backdrop of dramatic mountainous scenery.

Look out for our amazing range of complimentary honeymoon offers, such as room upgrades, candlelit dinners and spa treatments. And don’t forget you can add on authentic experiences to make your stay extra romantic – take a romantic hot-air balloon ride over Tuscany and watch opera under the stars in Verona.

Our Travel Experts can mix and match flights, hotels and experiences to tailor make your perfect Italy honeymoon.
