Travel Inspiration: The Jules Verne Travel Itinerary
The jules verne travel itinerary.
It’s hard to imagine too many works of literature with much more lasting influence than Jules Verne’s ‘Around The World In Eighty Days.” Written back in 1873, it still stands as one of the great adventure novels in the world for people of all ages, and it still exerts a strong influence on pop culture.
There have been numerous films crafted as adaptations of the novel, with the most recent example coming in 2004. That project starred Jackie Chan and Steve Coogan, and though it was a little bit of a goofy version of the story and suffered at the box office, the fact that it was made demonstrated the lingering popularity of the novel.
In the years since that film, ‘Around The World In Eighty Days’ has been used as the subject matter for a few different video games as well. “Around The World” is more of a guessing game invoking the globetrotting nature of the story upon which it’s based. Meanwhile, there’s also a mobile game based on the story that works almost like a storybook that you can play through.
All of these adaptations have helped to keep Jules Verne’s novel alive in a way that doesn’t happen for many books that are over 100 years old. But below, we want to look into a different way to enjoy this literary classic. And that’s by actually travelling the route that Phileas Fogg and Passapartout embarked on to see the world! The fully itinerary was posted, along with the modes of transportation set forth in the novel, by World For Learning. Here we’ll look not at how to get from point A to point B (which has become far simpler these days), but instead what to do in each of the eight destinations highlighted in the book.
Travel Inspiration – The Jules Verne Travel Itinerary
London, england on the jules verne travel itinerary.
Even for people living in Ireland, London can be a thrilling travel destination, and it’s nearly impossible to pick a single thing to do there. The city is packed with history and culture, and a proper trip would see you staying for days to experience as much as possible. But in the interest of plotting a global travel route and keeping it simple, riding the London Eye would seem to be a priority.
Certainly, this is considered to be a “tourist activity,” and therefore might turn some travellers off. But it’s also the best way there is to truly see the all of London from a unique vantage point. A walking tour is wonderful too, particularly given that landmarks like Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, and Westminster Abbey are all in relatively close proximity to each other.
Suez, Egypt on The Jules Verne Travel Itinerary
Suez might not be the tourism hot spot Jules Verne imagined it as any longer, particularly given that it’s not too far from Cairo (which draws a bigger crowd). However, it’s a fascinating place to visit precisely because it’s something of a relic of the past.
In Suez, the goal ought to be to tour the Waterfront Quarter, where you can almost feel the historical importance of a canal city that’s been passed between empires for hundreds of years. The array of architectural influences in the area by the water is fascinating and you may just find some terrific seafood as well!
Bombay, India (Mumbai) on The Jules Verne Travel Itinerary
Mumbai, the city formerly known as Bombay, is one of the more interesting cities in Europe, and has been absolutely doused in cultural and religious influence over the years. Like London, it ought to be properly explored over the course of many days. But on a quick stop during a worldwide tour, it would be wise to explore Elephanta Island.
Unfortunately, the stone elephant for which the island was named collapsed in the early-19th century, but this area still represents some of India’s most impressive temple carvings, featuring a full labyrinth of statues designed hundreds of years ago. The main attraction is a towering depiction of Shiva that stands at about six metres high.
Calcutta, India on The Jules Verne Travel Itinerary
Now known as Kolkata, this former capital is still a sort of cultural hub in modern India. There’s a great deal to do in the city, but you’ll enjoy one of the more unique cultural experiences in the world if you take a stroll across (and under) Howrah Bridge. This is a beautiful (if crowded) walking bridge, and beneath it sits a legendary flower market where street vendors and consumers bustle day and night. It’s a wonderful thing to see.
Hong Kong, China on The Jules Verne Travel Itinerary
It’s difficult to find a metric to support this claim, but Hong Kong may be one of the more underrated tourist destinations in the world. That is to say, it doesn’t seem to be on too many people’s travel bucket lists, but it’s hard to find someone who’s been there and didn’t love it.
The city is packed with sights and attractions, and you can even take an approach similar to that suggested with the London Eye and simply look down on the city from Victoria Peak if your main goal is just to see the city. However, Fodors recommends chartering a junk boat to spend up to seven hours on the water in the city with friends, food, and an open bar. (Probably not what Jules Verne had in mind!)
Yokohama, Japan on The Jules Verne Travel Itinerary
Once the most densely populated city in Japan, Yokohama remains a massive metropolis that isn’t always mentioned in this context simply because Tokyo has become so large. But some would tell you that Yokohama is actually more fun to visit. To pick just one activity here is difficult as well, but a stroll down the Osanbashi Pier has to be high on the list. The 19th century pier is a very unique structure in and of itself, but it also offers a spectacular view of the Yokohama skyline.
San Francisco, United States on The Jules Verne Travel Itinerary
Some say that San Francisco is the closest thing the United States has to a city with a European atmosphere. But a better characterisation might simply be that it’s a unique city that’s not squarely representative of one nation or culture. It’s another idea that could be branded as a “tourist” activity, but U.S. News & World Report recommends riding cable cars as a great way to see the city, and there may not be a better way.
You’ll want to see the Golden Gate Bridge the city is famous for as well, and it would be a shame not to try some of the wonderful restaurants, but a cable car is a great way to see a good chunk of this beautiful city by the bay.
New York City, United States on The Jules Verne Travel Itinerary
New York may just be the trickiest destination of the bunch to narrow down to one idea or attraction. But there’s nothing quite like walking through the city’s famous Central Park. Many who have never been don’t realise just how massive this park truly is, despite the fact that it’s right in the centre of one of the world’s largest cities. It’s a very peaceful place, but is nevertheless packed with activity in the form of everything from street performers to organised concerts. And to look up from a rolling green park to see a border of skyscrapers is a truly unique experience.
And that will complete our Jules Verne tour of the world — a fine goal for any ambitious traveller. Fortunately, you can pull it off in far fewer than 80 days!

About the company.
Voyages Jules Verne was founded in 1978 on the basis of one simple idea - to operate a train from London to Peking (Beijing) and thence to Hong Kong. In doing so the market to China was opened up at a time, remarkably, when the 'bamboo curtain' was still officially in place.
Further innovative train journeys were to follow and many travel firsts were also achieved including inaugural flights to previously inaccessible areas and the opening of remote border crossing points.
In 1982 Serenissima Travel was acquired and added a complementary list of cultural itineraries to the overall portfolio as well as introducing clients to themed travel such as walking, music & opera and cruising.
World events from 1989 to 1991, most notably the Tian an Men incident in China and the Gulf War, further shaped the future of the Company as even more diversification was necessary. Far from bemoaning the travel recession at the time, this resulted in an expansion of the company's portfolio while still retaining the core group travel ethos.
Voyages Jules Verne was acquired by Kuoni Travel in 1998 but still retains its independent and innovative approach to a comprehensive list of destinations and themes.
Today the range of product encompasses longhaul and shorthaul, weekends and expeditions, the conventional and the unexpected, a variety of themes and special interests - all underpinned by quality and value for money.
The tradition of innovation and creativity is still alive today and evidenced, amongst others, by stays at a convent in Rome, heritage properties in India, the use of royal steamers on the Nile, and a series of special events exclusively arranged for VJV clients.

Hidden Spain tour
Hiodden Spain: guide had no communication or organisational skills. His English was poor. He lived in southern Spain, we were in the Basque country. He knew nothing about the area and talked about southern Spain all the time. We had all been to the south many times. He seemed completely unaware of this. He read notes off the net, which we could have done.

Excellent pre travel service from Tara
We have used VJV before had had a wonderful time so have booked the Nile cruise including Aswan. We've not travelled yet, but I just wanted to praise the exceptional service we have received from Tara who went above and beyond in sorting out some specific requests when her colleagues had told me it was impossible previously. She is a credit to VJV.

Very poor at responding.
"I´ll get back to you tomorrow" obviously has a different meaning in the Jules Verne lexicon. That´s what we´ve been told three times now, but are still waiting. 20 years ago Jules Verne were the Gold Standard, by which other tour agents were judged, now they are some way below the middle of the pack. That´s a real shame. One commuinication you will receive though is the persistent feedback requests - "Tell us how did we do". Well, I can´t answer that, because you still didn´t do anything!

Recently went to Mexico and Guatemala…
Recently went to Mexico and Guatemala with this company. Awful holiday, expensive but done cheaply. Coming through immigration, we had to walk to our bus and the car barrier came down onto my husbands head, splitting the skin and causing him to collapse. We have been offered £300 as a goodwill gesture, because it was out with their control. I asked them if he had died which he could have done (he is 77) would they have said the same thing. Absolutely disgraceful. Please don't book with this company, they do not have your safety as a priority. Their standards have dropped considerably over the last year. I first went with them 35 years ago but will never go with them again. No customer care. Our complaint was not resolved amicably. Unfortunately we are due to go with you to Transylvania, but will never travel with you again.

We were very sorry to read about your disappointing experience in Mexico and we appreciate how serious this incident was. Nikki, our Customer Experience Manager, has been in contact with you and the matter has been resolved amicably. We're also very glad that your husband has recovered well. We're pleased you have decided to travel with us again and we hope that we can restore your faith with Jules Verne.
The Golden Road to Samarqand
I have just come back from the Golden Road to Samarqand trip - 3-14 May 2024 - and want to give a review because it was a perfect experience. What made my experience perfect? Comfortable flight, beautiful hotels in perfect locations, the planning that our guide Shukhrat put into making sure the whole group (19 in total) felt looked after safely and with great good humour. The weather was mixed so Shukhrat made some changes to our itinerary to make sure we would get the best out of each of the places we visited. We experienced ancient cities, mosques, madrassas, minarets and mausoleums, brought to life by information and stories about all the places we visited. This brought everything into vivid life as we walked the streets, explored bazaars and workshops and met local people who made us feel so welcome. The local guides in Khiva and Bukhara and the coach drivers could not have done more for us. We experienced the Kyzylkum desert, stopping to view the Amu Darya (Oxus) and lunch in a yurt, the snow capped Zarafshan mountains, local cuisine, markets and met local craftsmen and women. The whole trip was a revelation and I thank Shukhrat from the bottom of my heart for all that he did.

Thank you for taking the time to share your wonderful review following your tour with us on the Golden Road to Samarkand. We're thrilled to hear that you had an exceptional experience as Uzbekistan is one of our leading destination for 2024. Your kind words will be passed on to our local agents in Uzbekistan and also our guide, Shukhurat, who will appreciate your feedback. We're glad you returned home with wonderful memories and we hope to see you on another tour with us in the future.
Appalling. Save your money and use another company
The holiday booked was cancelled 3 weeks before departure. The replacement offered was appalling. It was a so called River Cruise from Stasbourg....No cruise that i know if is so bad. The boat rattles, creaks and bangs the 'cabins' are more akin to a prison cell. The Heath and Safety is dreadful with evacuation over 3 adjoining boats on narrow badly placed planks positively dangerous. During the night, it would be impossible to cross and anyone who is elderly or has mobility problems would simply be left behind. The quality is dire. Don't bother. For a much lower cost I have booked P&O Stateroom for 2 people next December. VJV did exactly the same to a consultant friend who has also provided the most dreadful reviews. They are not what they were and really couldn't care less.

Sorrento with VJV
I recently travelled to Sorrento with VJV and thoroughly enjoyed the trip. I’ve been on many previous trips (8) with this company and have always been happy with the service in the UK and when on holiday. The negative comments on here are puzzling. VJV trips typically have small numbers of people on them and a light touch when it comes to being guided. I really like this - I don’t want to be kept under close ‘supervision’, but maybe some people do!

The Golden Road to Samarkand
The Golden Road to Samarkand - Ukbekistan. What a fantastic holiday. The country is culturally rich, very friendly and so much to see and do. Made all the better due to the exacting organisation and admin of VJV customer services team and the exceptional in country guide. He was exceptional. All over every detail, nothing was too much trouble and we were well informed at all times. He earned his tip and more. I can highly recommend this company and this tour. You may find cheaper versions, but having seen other companies whilst I was there, at times they appeared chaotic and disorganised. I having nothing but praise and good words for the the local guide and VJV.

NO, DON'T CALL ME BACK
Haven't managed to browse the site at all, thanks to unmoveable."Can we call you back?" pleas that obscured the screen seconds after i clicked on a holiday. Clearly this company is too in love with technological hard-sell techniques to appreciate how off-putting they are.

Company Not as Good as it Used to be
Sadly since covid the company has lost site of any customer care. There is no loyalty for all the years of travelling with them, and the company feels as though its run by a group of youngsters with little knowledge of the holiday destinations they are selling.

The very best Safari experience in Tanzania.
We booked a Safari to Tanzania through VJV - and everything worked just perfectly! Their partner in Africa is Tent with a View - a company who reflect perfectly the service from VJV. Everything worked just as planned - the accommodation was quirky and fun -the food extraordinary (I wasn't expecting that in the middle of the Serengeti) - but most of all the people were warm, friendly and loved to share their culture and way of life. Simply the best experience - awesome! No complaints at all - the brochure tells you what to expect but they delivered so much more. Thank you!

Lacking in knowledge of Schengen
Lacking in knowledge of Schengen. VJV rep was unable to advise on Schengen passport rules when flying from the UK to an EU country and then on to another EU country without returning home first. This was surprising given they are a company that have many EU multi-country tours.

Why advertise regional flights?
I was interested in a holiday advertised as having regional flights. Asked for call back which I received. However the sales advisor seemed intent on persuading me to book a holiday with a flight from London and evaded my questions as to why regional flights were advertised. She was so patronising, obtuse and bossy I ended the phone call by saying I wouldn’t want to travel with JV anyway after this experience

Avoid Egyptair, if you can’t then don’t book the holiday
We enjoyed our holiday, organised by Jules Verne, it was the return home that was the issue. Another tour group arranged the early flights, Luxor - Cairo, to pick up the Heathrow flight that afternoon, Jules Berne arranged the early afternoon flight. Which was late. So we missed the connection and had to spend the night in a hotel chosen by Egyptair. The Le Passage at Cairo airport. Which was horrible. I wondered if Jules Verne would hide behind the ‘nothing to do with me, contact Egyptair’ nonsense and, guess what… ? They did. No discussion about how this sort of situation might be avoided in the future or, indeed, our thoughts on how the Egypt holiday might be improved. Nope… they have our money and that’s that. Well they won’t have anymore of it. Ever.

Excellent tours
We used Jules Verne to book a tour to Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. It was very well organised and a reasonable price for what we got. Phone information was good and the brochures are excellent. We have just booked a tour to Burma and, again, everything so far has been very efficient.
