Azure Sky Follows - Kalsubai Trekking - Baari Village

Kalsubai trek: On top of Maharashtra

“Bye, happy journey. Come back soon,” our hosts shouted out to us when we left for Kalsubai trek.

Shades of grey adorned the sky. The storminess of the weather catalysed our willpower to scale Kalsubai. Little boys and girls were going to school. On the two sides of the road, lush greenery extended for miles. It was difficult to separate the grasses from patches of paddy fields. Rain drenched trees populated the slopes of the hill. Dhoti-clad men donning white caps were walking on the village path with us. Bari village is really tiny, abruptly rising around the vicinity of the temple and ending on the bank of a seasonal stream.

The villagers here are accustomed to watching poncho-laden men and women walk by on weekends. They usually don’t bat an eyelid. But, our case was different. They know us; we had visited the village temple the night before in complete darkness, under heavy downpour with a local kid as our guide.

The numerous cascades diving down the hill slopes had created channels of small streams with significant water current. With pants hitched up to the knees, shoes in one hand and our camera in the other, we crossed one such stream barefoot.

On top of Kalsubai is a temple housing the local deity. The temple holds important religious significance among the people living in the nearby villages.

After a very brief walk through paddy fields, the terrain started gaining slope. An orange flag hoisted doorway was standing in the middle of nowhere. The patch next to it was perilously muddy. The pitter-patter of the rain made the path more treacherous.

We arrived at the first crucial point of the Kalsubai trek, the first metal ladder. There are,in total, four metal ladders which are attached to the boulders of the Kalsubai mountain by bolts at different sections of the trek. Sometimes new ladders overlapped the old rust-laden and half-broken ladders.

The iron claws of fear clasped me hard. The husband made the first move while I stood by the foot of the ladder praying to all the Gods and Goddesses that I might have offended in my lifetime. When it was my turn to put the first step forward, the wind started blowing furiously and the pitter-patter took shape of a full blown shower. Halfway up the ladder, I stepped on my own poncho and almost tripped.

A tiny plateau region provided a decent vantage point to view the valley below. As far as I could see, there were streaks of white ribbons meandering along the green hills. The unabated rainfall triggered cascades all through the hills. With a glass of lemon water in hand, I wondered how I am going to survive the other three ladders.

Monkeys are the real bosses of the second and third ladders. Families of monkeys sat on the handrails, stairs and the adjacent boulders. I don’t like being around monkeys. They are too mischievous and unpredictable. I was not bold enough to risk clearing the traffic jam on the wet metal ladder with wafer thin footspace of the steps.

Usually, on monsoon weekends, Kalsubai trail is accustomed to seeing whopping footfalls. We were lucky. On the day we hiked, there were barely other trekkers there, probably owing to it being a Saturday and not Sunday. The only drawback of this equation was that the monkeys outnumbered us.

A local dog following another group of teenage trekkers came to our rescue. With its tail wagging, it took the lead on the ladders and cleared our path from the monkeys.

With the rise in altitude, the temperature drop was real. The surroundings were draped in a translucent curtain of mist. The lush green turned hazy green now. Visibility was poor. It was as if we were watching the world through foggy glasses. On two sides of the trail were blue wildflowers. A thousand tiny water droplets settled over the wet petals of the flowers.

Stairs to Heaven

Vicinal to the flowery land was the fourth and final ladder to reach the summit of mount Kalsubai. The first sight of the ultimate ladder made me euphoric. Using ‘surreal’ would be a major underestimation of the scenario. The foot of the ladder originated from right where we were standing but its head was swallowed up in the depths of clouds.

We emerged from the clouds and stepped on mount Kalsubai’s summit. The pinnacle was deprived of any vegetation. The edge of the summit was fenced with occasional openings. An orange coloured temple popped up from the blackish rocky mountain apogee. The temple was tended by two priests. Peda, a very common Indian sweet was sold at the temple by the priests at INR 60 for 6. We stuffed our mouth with some, which gave our intensely tired bodies some much needed carbohydrate.

On a clear day, miles and miles of Maharashtrian countryside is visible from the top of Kalsubai. But on the day we went, a typical monsoon day, we were shrouded in clouds. The wind had been howling throughout the trek, but on the summit the temperature dropped to freezing cold and the rain lashed hard. Clouds raced around us and once in a while, it revealed the green cloaked valleys below.

Our guts were in for a real test on the downward journey. Climbing down ‘stairs to heaven’, that is the first ladder on the downward journey or the last on the upward journey, was more terrifying than I thought. The only assurance I had was the local guide hired by another party who kept telling me not to look down.

My survival called for a tea break and we enjoyed sipping hot tea from a shack on the trail. Beside us, a 50-something man was devouring stir fried onions fritters or kanda bhaji. A walking stick lay beside him. Before we finished our tea, we got to know he lives in Kolhapur and frequents this trail.

A disturbing noise took us by surprise. It was a screeching baby monkey. Two men had forcefully grabbed it and they had an evil grin on their face. The shack owners continued their business without any emotion on their face. We, the trekkers, exchanged confused but alert glances with each other.

A troop of monkeys were lounging on the second and third ladders. A group of youths were stuck. For every step they took forward they ran back four steps. We joined them in the back and forth movement. Soon, another batch of youngsters joined the drama with us. The man from Kolhapur came and waved his walking stick at the monkeys. He kept shaking the stick and rescued us panic-stricken souls. But in our hearts, we knew the monkeys had enough reason to rebel.

The descent beyond this point was sans any major trouble. Only once, a herd of goats mistook our ponchos for something edible and the pack of 30 surrounded us, gradually closing in. Thankfully the goat-herd came in time. We and our ponchos escaped unhurt.

Losing our way near the bank of the stream can be counted as our last adventure on the Kalsubai trail. We took 12 hours to complete the trek which is generally completed in 5-6 hours. After crossing the stream, we turned back to look up on the majesty of Kalsubai for the last time, until we return again.

Wow! What an adventure! Those metal ladders seem a scary experience! I’ve climbed various mountains in the UK with a group of friends, including Scafell and Hellvelyn in the Lake District, Mount Snowdon in Wales and Ben Nevis was our final mountain in Scotland. We’ve not been climbing as a group since.

Wow you have done some commendable hiking activity in your life! This metal ladder is the first and the easiest one. We couldn’t capture the second and third ones due to the monkeys. I didn’t dare take out my phone or camera from my bag, the monkeys are infamous for snatching things away. Those two and the last one was really scary.

Introduction

My Kalsubai trek was all about these moments, and I can’t wait to take you along on this extraordinary journey.

Kalsubai Trek

Historical Perspective

To fully appreciate the grandeur of Kalsubai, you must first understand the heights it reaches. Kalsubai is the highest peak in Maharashtra, India, and it reaches an elevation of 1,646 meters (5,400 feet) above sea level. This Kalsubai peak height isn’t just a number; it’s the heart and soul of this mountain, showcasing the rugged beauty of the Western Ghats.

But Kalsubai’s significance goes beyond its impressive height. People have been coming here for ages to pay their respects to the local goddess. The name “Kalsubai” itself derived from a village woman named Kalsu who took up the challenging task of scaling the mountain. She couldn’t complete the task, but her efforts earned her the name of the mountain. Some cool stories and legends make this place even more special. It’s not just a trek; it’s a cultural journey.

Kalsubai – Hike to Maharashtra’s Highest Peak

Kalsubai Peak Trek

After  arriving in India  on Oct 25, we spent the first few days adjusting to the new time zone. By the weekend, we felt better and decided to hike to the Kalsubai, which is the highest peak in Maharashtra at 1646 m (5400 ft).

Kundan, his six-year-old daughter Khushi, his 13-year-old nephew Palash and his friend Santosh would also join us on the hike. It had been two years since I met Kundan. Our last hike was  Markha Valley Trek  in Ladakh.

Ahmednagar to Bari

Kalsubai part of the Western Ghats mountain range lies in the Kalsubai Harischandragad Wildlife Sanctuary right along the border of Ahmednagar and Nashik District. The hike starts from the village of Bari, which is about 167 km from Ahmednagar via the Alephata route.

kalsubai trek review

We left our place in Ahmednagar at 6 am, and it took us almost four hours to arrive at Bari. The drive from Bota to Rajur on State Highway 21 was the slowest, and sometimes I wondered if we were lost. But Google confirmed that we were on the fastest route. Fastest at times meant 15-20 km/hr.

Hotel Sahyadri

Kundan and co. were already in Bari. At one and half hours, it was a relatively short drive for them from Nashik. Kavya gets carsick, so she had not eaten anything since we left, and now she was hungry. We asked around, and the villagers confirmed that we could stop by a place for breakfast after a short hike up.

After a 20 minute hike, we arrived at Hotel Sahyadri, a local farmer’s house that caters to trekkers. We didn’t have such ‘hotels’ back in 2003, when Kasturi, Kundan and I first started hiking around Pune. Then, it was typically one or two people selling lemonade or buttermilk.

Kalsubai Peak Trek

Now, Maggi (instant noodles) seems to be the go-to food in the Western Ghats, as it is on Himalayan Treks. We didn’t buck the trend, and, soon we all had our own hot bowl of Maggi. After a long 30-minute break, we were back on the trail.

Bari to Kalsubai Peak

People typically start their hike early in the morning as the trail is quite exposed. But, we had a late start. It was 11 am, and even at 24 C, it was exhausting, especially for the kids.

Kalsubai Peak Trek

An old lady nonchalantly walked past Kavya and offered some words of encouragement. She was walking barefoot and has probably done so all her life.

Kalsubai Peak Trek

After hiking for about forty minutes, we were at our first ladder. There are about four ladders placed on the trail to help people safely climb up some steep sections. However, given the number of people, these ladders were often bottlenecks on the route.

Kalsubai Peak Trek

Higher up on the trail, we had company – monkeys. Unfortunately, the monkeys had gotten used to being fed and were aggressive. Especially if you were carrying a backpack and had any food or packaging visible.

kalsubai trek review

About two hours into the hike, we were at a relatively flat section and had a clear view of the Kalsubai Peak.

Kalsubai Peak Trek

It was a short hike now to the final ladder. Here again, we had to wait as it was a bit crowded.

Finally, at 1:15 pm, we arrived at the peak. There were quite a few villagers at the Kalsubai Devi temple. Not sure if there was a special occasion or it was a busy Sunday.

kalsubai trek review

From the peak, we had some good views of Sakira Peak and Bhandardara backwaters.

Palash had spotted an alternate route to the peak on the way up. It was a short but steep scramble down on the Southside of the peak. I went down first and then others followed. It would have been challenging for Khushi, so Kundan took her down the ladder route.

Kalsubai Peak Trek

We continued our hike along the Southeast Ridge and then joined back the main trail.

Kalsubai Peak Trek

Soon we were at the ladders section. It was relatively less busy than our hike up.

kalsubai trek review

After the ladder section, Kavya, Palash and I sprinted down to the farmer’s house we had stopped earlier in the day. We placed an order for lunch for our group.

kalsubai trek review

We sat inside and had a delicious meal of chapati (whole wheat bread), matki (moth beans), pithla (made from chickpea flour), daal (lentils), and locally grown rice for lunch.

It was late in the afternoon and much more pleasant to be outside. We hiked down to Bari while enjoying the views of the village and the rice fields.

Kalsubai Peak Trek

In total, the hike was just under 8 km out and back with an elevation gain of 800 m. It was Khushi’s first hike and to be honest I was skeptical whether she will be able to do this hike. But she did really well and now has a great story of hiking to the highest peak in Maharashtra.

Interesting reading your account. I first hiked to Kalsubai in Dec 1978 when there were no crowds, no staircases and no signboards! We spent the night outside the little shrine on the summit – it got quite chilly and windy in the night so we had to take shelter and huddle in the shrine! We did not have sleeping bags in those days…. but carried heavy blankets and sheets to cover ourselves!!

1978…wow! It must have been quite an experience going up to Kalsubai peak before ladders and any support infrastructure. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Well written and beautifully described. Had hiked in 2009 and this was really refreshing to go through the experience.

Thank you! It must have been much peaceful back in 2009.

Hi Shashi, thanks for sharing this experience. We are planning to drive down from Mumbai, and stay the night night close to the trek start point, to veer off the car journey’s exhaustion. Would we find a good place around to take a nap, before we start to hike up there? Any suggestions on the

Alark – sorry for the delay in responding to your comment. In the village, where the trek starts you should be able to find an accommodation. The place where we took lunch break (Hotel Sahyadri) also offers accommodation. Hope you have a good trip.

Andharban Jungle Trek is a wonderful experience for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers, offering a chance to explore the mystical beauty of a dense forest!

The trek begins from the village of Pimpri (Tal. Mulshi, Dist. Pune), the trail takes you through a deep and mysterious forest, providing an enchanting experience. The forest is primarily composed of thick foliage and towering trees that block most of the sunlight, creating a dark and surreal atmosphere. This is what gives the trek its name.

Kalsubai is Maharashtra’s highest peak. Standing at a staggering height of 5400 ft. above sea level; it offers stunning views of the Sahyadri ranges and lush green cover surrounding the mountain. Kalsubai is one of the most popular trekking destinations in Maharashtra. The trek is steep in places but is helped immensely by the good infrastructure in place for the trek, making it accessible for inexperienced trekkers as well. The mountain itself dates back to the Cenozoic Era, composed mostly of solidified flood basalt. Kalsubai is a great spot for star gazers and campers as well.

ladder way Kalsubai highest peak of Maharashtra

Nestled amongst the pristine Sahyadri ranges, the Kalsubai trek is a blend of rocky patches and steep vertical hill slopes. The peak gives an excellent view of various forts such as Kulang, Madan, Alang forts. We recommend this place as a one-day trek , but incase an overnight journey is being planned, one can stay at Bhandardara which is approx 16-17 km away from Bari Village. If you are feeling a bit more adventurous, pitch your tent on top of the hill at a suitable place to camp. There are many travel agencies which conduct trek events at this place. But since the route is pretty straightforward and well laid-out, going without a guide or group is not much of an issue. For details about accommodation at Bhandardara, refer to our article on this beautiful location here

WINTER :  GO FOR : FLOWER TREKS AND NIGHT TREKS

-There is a dramatic change in the landscape at Kalsubai after the monsoons as the flowers of different varieties blossom and attract various species of drangon flies, bees and butterflies that are attracted to their sweet nectar. In the winters, snakes and lizards can be spotted sun-bathing near the ladders often.

– The meadows bursting with flowers in bloom make for a splendid day trek-route and activities such as stargazing and Moonlight treks attract a large number of travelers to Kalsubai in the Winter. The months from October to February are suitable to enjoy the mesmerizing view of the  night skies and beautiful sunrises atop the hill.

Both Vagabond Experiences and Ajay Singh from the Adventures Club Pune recommend the night trekking experience while climbing Kalsubai peak.

“As there is hardly any forest cover on the Kalsubai Trek, the Moonlit sky and night trekking makes for a fun experience as you can avoid the heat,” states Shannon Fernandes.  “In comparison to other treks, there is a clear laid out path and staircase to climb and so there isn’t much of a risk to trek at night.”

HOW TO GET THERE

TREKKING AT KALSUBAI

Image result for kalsubai camp

TIME REQUIRED FOR TREK   :  5-6 hours.

DIFFICULTY LEVEL :  EASY TO MEDIUM.

-Although a long trek, there are stairs which continue till the top of the peak. The metal ladder which is in good condition has been placed in rough patches which might be difficult to climb. Thus, making it quite accessible to beginner trekkers.

https://talkingtota.files.wordpress.com/2014/06/kasubai-004.jpg

The trek route begins at Bari, which is the base village. There is a small temple which is 15 minutes away from the start of the trek route. People who can’t climb up till the peak take the blessings of the deity at this Kalsubai temple. There are patches of shade at frequent intervals which can be used to rest and enjoy the breeze which gushes through the mountain route often. A word of advice though – opt for a night trek (especially in Summer) or begin the journey as early as possible in the morning; as the scorching heat tends to dehydrate and tire the trekkers on what is a long trek route to the peak. Fortunately, there are little stalls serving buttermilk and lemon juice at various places on the route, which leave one feeling refreshed and energized.

For breakfast and lunch, you can head to this place called Kalsubai Tea Centre And Dharmaveer Lunch Home which serves tourists. snacks and meals near the base Village. In case you need details about their menu and location, here is their Contact no : 099234 42273

Camping at the peak is possible and a very enjoyable experience. If you are planning an overnight camp, you can carry your own tents and pitch them at a suitable corner on the summit. Typically, you will find clusters of tents at and around the peak during peak seasons.

Do note though, that there is no washroom facility or toilet at the top of the mountain. There is a washroom located only at the base village to freshen up.

Apart from the camping option, Hotel Trek Kalsubai is an alternative for a more comfortable stay. Not only does this hotel provide accommodation at the base village, but it also provides trekking and camping facilities like guides, tents, etc for the Kalsubai trail. Here is their Contact no : 083903 74971

Nights at the top of the mountain can get quite chilly and so carrying a jacket or blanket to wrap yourself with warmth is quite a must. While the temperature during the day ranges from 35°C to 28°C, it can dip as low as 12°C to 15°C at night.

WHAT TO PACK

The Kalsubai trek can be long and arduous, so it’s best to be prepared and carry the right gear. At the same time, overpacking leading to a heavy load on your shoulders can be counterproductive. So choose your gear well and ensure that it is lightweight, portable where possible. Here are some suggestions:

  • Backpack: Ideal size would be 20-45 liters. Make sure it has a good carrying system with adequate padding and ideally a chest strap. We recommend the the Tatonka Pyrox 45 lit as top of the line trekking backpacks. This should have enough space for you to load up your tent and sleeping bag as well. For a day trek, even a good quality daypack/school bag will work – such as the  Deuter Futura 32 lit
  • Shoes: Many people are seen undertaking a trek in flaoters etc. This will increase the risk of slipping significantly, especially during monsoons. We strongly recommend basic hiking or (trail) running shoes.
  • Camera: Ideally a point and shoot with good zoom or a 360* camera , for capturing the scenic locations and/or Binoculars (one within a large group is enough)
  • 2L Water Bottle per person
  • Sweatshirt ( During winters)
  • Torch / Headlamp , especially for night treks
  • Dry Snacks like biscuits, wafers or nutty bars.
  • Cap/ sunglasses
  • Raincoat/ Poncho ( During Monsoons)
  • Power Banks for charging electronic devices
  • Hiking pole , especially if you have weak knees

If you are camping, you will also additionally need the following:

  • A camping kit such as this or the following separately
  • Tent (waterproof for monsoons)
  • Sleeping bags (10* in winter, 20* in monsoon)
  • Tent light/ lantern
  • Peebuddy for women

SAFETY AND SECURITY

-The rocky patches and metal staircases often get slippery during monsoons and thus, some caution should be exercised while trekking. Invest in a sturdy pair of shoes with good grip!

– Take along a basic first-aid kit to help in case of injuries or emergencies.

-The main hospitals in this area for any medical emergency are : 1) Primary Health Care Center Ahmednagar; Maharashtra. Contact no :097628 30880 2) Samarth Hospital SH44; KolaharGhoti Road; AurangpurPhata; Contact no : 099222 64094

-The nearest police station is located at a distance of just 160 m from Bari village.

Here are some details :

Akole Police Station Dhumalwadi Road; Amrut Nagar; Akole; Maharashtra 422601; India phone: 02424 221 333.

Introduction

In the Sahyadri area, Kalsubai Peak is a famous trip. With a height of 5,400 feet, it is Maharashtra's tallest mountain and is conveniently accessible from both Mumbai and Pune. The walk passes through a stunning variety of natural settings, including waterfalls, woodlands, meadows, and medieval forts.

Visitors from local communities go to the Kalsubai Temple at the peak's summit throughout the year. They have come to seek Kalsubai Devi's blessings. Kalsubai, a young village girl, is said to have lived in the mountains. She treated locals and animals at that period and assisted in community activities. She went to the peak one day and never came back. So, in her honour, a tiny temple was built on the slope near her house, and the larger Kalsubai temple was constructed on the top.

Many prominent forts, such as Alang, Madan, and Kulang, may be seen from the Kalsubai hike. The hikes up to these summits are strenuous. On a clear day, you can see Harihargad, Harishchandragad, and Ratangad, as well as other forts in the area. For extra adventure, many experienced hikers combine these trips. The Kalsubai trek is a popular night hike as well. Trekkers come here for the spectacular morning views!

Best Time To Go On Kalsubai Trek

The trail is available all year, with a varied environment for each season. So, pick the optimum time based on what you want to see and do.

The monsoon season lasts from July through September. You will be able to enjoy beautiful green landscapes and stroll in the rain. Despite the monsoon season being the busiest, the path may get quite congested, with up to 3000 people on the trail at any given time. Due to the slushy trail, it becomes extremely slippery and dangerous. It's also quite difficult to gain clear views during this time, so it's better to avoid it.

The blossoming months are September and October. The neighbouring peaks and forts may be seen well during the fall months. You will be able to wander across meadows with a wide diversity of flowers. The same flowers that can be seen on the Kaas plateau may also be found here. On the iron ladders, snake enthusiasts can glimpse several unusual species.

The greatest time to go on a night trek is from November to April, when the weather is warm enough to see the stunning dawn from the peak. Carry a light jacket because it might get chilly.

The pre-monsoon months are May and June. The clouds create intriguing patterns, and keep an eye out for fireflies!

How To Get To Kalsubai Trek?

By road - Mumbai to Bari

  • The town of Bari, which is the starting point for the journey, is around 150 kilometres from Mumbai and takes 2-3 hours to arrive. Hence, taking the road rather than the rail is strongly advised from a convenience standpoint.
  • From Mumbai to Kalsubai, the best route is Mumbai > Kalyan > Ghatgar > Bhandardara > Bari.

By road - Pune to Bari

  • Bari village is 180 kilometres from Pune and takes about 4-5 hours to visit.
  • Pune > Sangamner > Rajur > Bhandardara > Bari is the best route from Pune to Kalsubai.

By public transport -

  • The closest stations to Bari village are Kasara and Igatpuri. Kasara is 50 kilometres from Bari, whereas Igatpuri is about 30 kilometres.
  • From CST to Igatpuri, one can catch the Mahanagri Express, Nandigram Express, Kolkata Mail, or Howrah Mail train, or a local train to Kasara.
  • Private automobiles and buses run routinely from Igatpuri and Kasara Station to Bhandardara, Pune, and Akole, all of which stop at Bari. Buses leave Igatpuri Station as early as 5 a.m.

Kalsubai Trek Difficulty Level

Although it is a difficult journey, there are steps that go to the peak's summit. The in excellent condition metal ladder has been installed in uneven sections that may be difficult to climb. As a result, it is quite accessible to first-time hikers.

The area is protected inside the limits of the Kalsubai Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary. The walk starts at Bari, which is the starting point. A tiny temple may be seen 15 minutes from the start of the walking path. People who are unable to ascend to the summit seek the deity's blessings at the Kalsubai shrine. There are pockets of shade at regular intervals where you may rest and enjoy the air that blows through the mountain road. However, as the blazing heat tends to dehydrate and fatigue hikers on what is a long walk path to the top, consider doing a night trek (particularly in the summer) or starting the journey as early as possible in the morning. Fortunately, several little kiosks along the road provide buttermilk and lemon juice, leaving one feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

It is possible to camp at the summit, and it is a really nice experience. You can bring your own tents and pitch them in a good location on the top if you're planning an overnight stay. You’ll typically see groups of tents at and around the top during peak seasons.

However, it should be noted that there are no restrooms or toilets at the summit of the mountain. There is a bathroom in the base village if you want to freshen up.

The nights at the top of the mountain may be extremely cool, so bringing a jacket or blanket to cover yourself in warmth is highly recommended. While the temperature fluctuates from 35°C to 28°C during the day, it may drop to as low as 12°C to 15°C at night.

Important Things To Carry On The Kalsubai Trek

Because the Kalsubai trip may be lengthy and difficult, it's important to be prepared and bring the appropriate equipment. On the other hand, overpacking might result in a hefty burden on your shoulders, which can be counterproductive. So pick your stuff carefully and make it as light and portable as possible. Here are a few recommendations:

  • Backpack : A size of 20-45 litres would be ideal. Check for a sturdy carrying method with plenty of cushioning and, ideally, a chest strap. You should be able to pack your tent and sleeping bag inside this as well. Even a decent quality daypack/school bag will be enough for a day hike.
  • Shoes : Many individuals are observed trekking in floaters and other vehicles. This will considerably increase the risk of sliding, especially during the rainy season. Basic hiking or (trail) running shoes are highly recommended.
  • Camera : For photographing stunning settings, a point-and-shoot camera with decent zoom or a 360* camera is ideal, as are binoculars.
  • 2 litres water bottle per person
  • Sweatshirt (During winters)
  • Torch/Headlamp (for night treks)
  • Dry Snacks like biscuits, wafers, or nutty bars
  • Cap/Sunglasses
  • Raincoat/Poncho (During Monsoons)
  • Power Banks for charging electronic devices
  • Hiking pole, especially if you have weak knees

If you are camping, you will also additionally need the following:

  • A camping kit
  • Tent (waterproof for monsoons)
  • Sleeping bags
  • Tent light/lantern
  • Pee buddy for women
