KZ RV Review: 4.0 Out Of 5.0 Stars
Kz rv overview, kz rv lines, kz rv build quality, kz rv customer support, kz rv warranty, kz rv reviews and ratings, kz rv review: is kz a good rv manufacturer, faq: kz rv reviews, kz rv review.
KZ RVs may not be a household name outside of the recreational vehicle (RV) world like some of the industry’s best RV brands . But for plugged-in RVers, the company is a well-known entity. Over the last five decades, the company has developed a reputation for quality campers, as evidenced both by industry awards and glittering KZ RV reviews.
We wanted to put that reputation to the test. This KZ RV review takes an in-depth look at the company’s costs, quality, customer support, and owner reviews. You can use what you learn to help you decide if KZ is the right RV manufacturer for your new RV.
Between KZ’s well-earned reputation for quality, its large selection of models, and its better-than-average warranty program, the brand is a solid choice for a camper manufacturer at multiple price points. Although there are some of the same complaints you’ll find with any RV brand about quality and service, its strengths earned the company a strong 4.0 out of 5.0 stars in this KZ RV review.
KZ got its start in the RV world making truck campers, operating out of a gas station in Middlebury, Indiana, in 1972. Since then, the company has relocated to nearby Shipshewana where it now produces full lines of travel trailers, fifth wheels, and toy haulers.
While the company–like many–now falls under the Thor Industries umbrella, it has maintained a reputation for producing high-quality towable RVs. KZ makes travel trailers, fifth-wheels , and toy hauler RVs. It doesn’t make motorhomes like Class A , Class B , or Class C RVs. You can find those from brands like Jayco and Forest River .
While it tends to be a little more expensive than some of its competitors, RV buyers can find campers from KZ across the price spectrum. The brand has multiple options in the entry-level category under $30,000 , like the KZ Connect and KZ Sportsmen lines. But the brand also offers a few luxury campers that sell for more than $100,000 brand new.
As with almost every RV manufacturer, you have many options when it comes to features and amenities that you can have built into your KZ RV. These options can easily push an entry-level model into mid-range territory or even higher.
KZ produces 14 lines of RVs, each with its own range of models and floor plans. While some of these lines only feature models in one category, several have models in multiple categories. Different lines offer different sizes and amenities and, as a result, come with different price points.
KZ RVs have a long-held reputation for build quality. When company founder Daryl Zook sold the company to Thor Industries in 2014, many KZ fans were understandably concerned that the company wouldn’t be able to maintain its quality standards. However, so far, that doesn’t seem to be the case.
As a testament to that quality, KZ has won the Dealer’s Satisfaction Index (DSI) Quality Circle award an impressive 18 out of the 25 times it has been issued. Five of those awards were won from 2014 until now.
The DSI Quality Circle award is issued every year by the RV Dealers Association to the top 10 manufacturers in the RV industry, rated on dealer satisfaction. Reliability and quality are some of the primary considerations in this survey. Clearly, RV dealers think very highly of the brand’s quality and have for some time.
In addition to its reputation for build quality, KZ has also built a reputation for providing helpful after sales service. Its customer service phone number is easy to find on the website, although the company does not make it clear when representatives are available.
But much of this reputation likely has to do with the abundance of resources the company makes available to its customers. On its website, KZ offers links to helpful resources like:
- Owner’s manuals
- Towing guide
- Self-service support
- Vacation planner
Like most RV companies, KZ also has an owners forum where people can share information and ask questions. However, this forum is not as active as those of some other brands, so it may not be as helpful as some. Still, it’s a good place to connect with other KZ owners who might have insight into your particular model.
KZ touts its warranty heavily on its website. Branded as “KZ True 2,” the company’s warranty is a two-year “hitch-to-bumper” warranty. This is an extra year of protection compared to many other big names in the RV industry.
It’s important to note the KZ True 2 warranty doesn’t come with every model. Most models come with a one-year warranty. However, you’ll get the company’s two-year warranty on these products:
- Durango half-ton fifth wheels
- Durango fifth wheels
- Durango Gold fifth wheels
- Connect SE travel trailers
- Connect travel trailers
- Sportsmen fifth wheels
- Sportsmen destination trailers
- Sportster toy haulers
- Venom V-Series toy haulers
- Venom toy haulers
As with all warranties, it’s important to read the fine print carefully. Companies often include terms and exclusions to warranties that make them cover less than most people would assume. Despite the company’s strong reputation, you should always make sure you know exactly what is and isn’t covered by your warranty.
Based on the company’s reputation for quality and service, it should come as no surprise that it holds an A+ rating and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau (BBB). This top rating from the organization indicates that it handles complaints from customers well.
Reviews from customers do vary a bit online. KZ has an overall 3.6 out of 5.0-star rating on RVInsider , which is above average for the site. Customers gave KZ three or more stars for the Livability, Overall Quality, Floorplan, and Driveability/Towing categories. Curiously, however, they only gave it 2.7 stars in the Warranty category.
Positive KZ RV Reviews
Customers mention just about everything when they leave favorable KZ RV reviews. But the overall build quality and amenities are frequent topics of these reviews.
“Has lots of great options. I love the pullout tubs that go under the u-shaped dinette for easy pull out storage. It had a huge pantry. It has USB charging ports at every bed.” – Jonathan, 2021 KZ Connect
“Very good quality and the fit and finish–the best we have had and this is our fourth RV. It is built with full-time RVers in mind. The rear kitchen and lots of counter space is the best we have seen in any brand.” – Bert, 2017 KZ Durango Gold
Negative KZ RV Reviews
KZ has its share of negative reviews online as well. Most of the people who leave these unfavorable reviews describe quality issues and problems with their dealership.
“It has been at the dealership twice for more than four weeks each time being repaired. The main AC went out, the awning had to be replaced, the pipes are leading in the bathroom, [and] the molding has come loose on the ceiling.” – Troy, 2016 KZ Spree
“Within one month the silicon around the kitchen sink failed and the countertop [delaminated]. The bulb seal along the slide out is dry rotting and cracking. The slide out also leaks into the main cabin if you get caught driving in the rain.” –Tim, 2019 KZ Connect
Despite some reports of quality issues, it’s clear that KZ continues to earn its reputation as a manufacturer of high-quality RVs. You only need to look as far as the fact that it consistently earns a spot among the top RV manufacturers in the DSI Quality Circle awards to confirm.
KZ offers towables at multiple price points, making it an accessible brand for a wide range of people. The company’s two-year “hitch-to-bumper” warranty is also a strong selling point–although it is a little disappointing that this warranty doesn’t come with all models.
Overall, there’s a lot to like about KZ RVs and not much to dislike about the company. For people looking for a dependable RV in the towable category, KZ would be an excellent place to start.

KZ Connect 241 RLK Road Test.
Great value in a lightweight travel trailer.
W e had the pleasure of visiting John Petrie at Niagara Trailers in St. David’s Ontario, located just a few minutes from St. Catharines, not far from the QEW highway, where we had the opportunity to check out the 2018 KZ Connect 241 RLK (Rear Lounge Kitchen) model from the Shipshewana, Indiana company. K-Z has been building lightweight and affordable travel trailers since 1972, with an excellent reputation for quality construction and value at a price that meets the needs of the average RV family.
K-Z builds several RV lines – Durango, Connect, Escape, Sportsmen, Classic, Sportster, Spree, Sidewinder, and Venom, along with its Venture line of towables.
We selected the KZ Connect 241 RLK travel trailer for this RV Show issue of RV Lifestyle Magazine as it is an excellent example of a mid-range lightweight trailer, with all of the features most families need, plus a few extra perks… all in a very well-designed package.
Construction
K-Z has an excellent reputation for building quality RVs at affordable prices. The Connect 241 RLK is a fine example of decades of RV experience blended with modern materials and manufacturing techniques. We were very impressed with the overall fit and finish in this vehicle, and with the level of quality control… this is becoming a concern within the RV industry, as manufacturers race to meet the highest demand in history for travel trailers, motorhomes, and fifth wheels – but with the K-Z models we checked out, the traditional focus on quality seems to remain a top priority – and that will add significantly to your enjoyment of the vehicle, and the resale value when it is time to trade up to a new model.
This trailer invites you inside, with a large entry door, lightweight Euro-style steps built with a strong steel linkage and aluminum steps that feature anti-slip grooves, and a convenient handrail.
The Connect 241 RLK, like all of the models in the K-Z Connect series, is built on a heavy-duty I-beam frame, with 2” x 3” floor joists spaced every 16”, and fully welded outriggers. Above the frame, the sub-floor is constructed with 3” stringers and covered with 5/8” tongue and groove plywood decking, and this is covered with high-quality Armstrong® ToughGuard® Linoleum throughout the unit. This assures a creak-free, solid floor, that is easy to maintain. The bottom of the trailer is protected from the elements by a Darco® corrugated moisture barrier, and this enables the engineers to provide a heated, enclosed, and insulated underbelly, in which your tanks and storage compartments are arranged.
Above your head, K-Z builds a roof that is engineered to last, framed with 4 ½” arched truss rafters and covered with 3/8” walkable roof decking, then covered with a layer of SuperFlex® Seamless 1-Piece roofing material. R-7 batten insulation keeps the climate inside the RV comfortable in cold or warm conditions. Our test unit included a 13,500 BTU roof A/C and a digital TV antenna with signal booster.
The walls of the trailer are built with a very durable sandwich construction, with Lamilux® exterior fibreglass Gelcoat that is UVA and UVB resistant on the exterior, covering a wall frame insulated with expanded R-7 insulation. The interior layer of the wall sandwich is 1/8” luan wallboard. The exterior walls have a high gloss colour infused fibreglass surface – the colour scheme is “Sandlewood”. There is a protective front panel of Diamond Plate to reduce the effect of road chips.
The 241 RLK features a dinette slide-out – this component is the latest in RV technology, using a rack and pinion electric slide mechanism with manual override and a box tube slideout ram.
On the Road
We towed the Connect 241 RLK with a 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup. This tow vehicle handles a trailer of this size and weight with ease – indeed, with a an unloaded vehicle weight of 5,310 pounds, the Connect 241 RLK could be towed by any of a wide range of pickups or mid-size SUV models.
The Connect series is engineered to travel. With Trailer King ST 205/75/R14 Radial tires on optional aluminum rims, Dexter E-Z Lube® axles, LCI Trail-Air Equa-Flex™ premium suspension that reduces fore-to-aft movement. The trailer has heavy-duty leaf springs, and auto-adjusting brakes – in short, the Connect 241 RLK is equipped with the optimum trailer, suspension and running gear for an RV in this category.
A trailer of this size and weight is best towed with a class III equalizing hitch, and sway control is always a good idea, whether you are towing with a pickup or an SUV.
In the Campground
The Connect 241 RLK offers a full range of exterior features to extend your comfort to the patio area of your campsite. The Smart Arm Awning rolls out at the touch of a switch, and retracts in just a few seconds when it’s time to hit the road. There is an optional wind and motion security sensor for the Smart Arm Awning.
Exterior stereo speakers with LED lights add a touch of class and ambiance to your evening entertaining. There is, of course, an exterior shower, and you have all of the RV and entertainment hookups within easy reach, placed just where you need them, including electric, water, and sewer connections, as well as cable TV and satellite hookups.
There are several unique features that caught our attention – for example, the Connect unit we tested was equipped with a ToyLok® – included in the K-Z Advantage Package – this is the ideal way to lock up your bikes so you don’t have to worry about them riding off into the sunset without you.
Exterior storage compartments are spacious and easily accessible, thanks to large radius-cornered doors with magnetic catches.
Spacious Interior
The trailer has an excellent interior floorplan, well suited for a family of four to six people. We always prefer layouts with large windows to let in the natural light, and overhead skylights and lumidomes, and the 241 RLK delivers on all of these points.
In the Galley
The galley features seamless countertops, an under-mount kitchen sink with cover and a residential quality faucet with pull-out spray-head. These are easy to clean, and well-sized for cooking. Appliances include an 8 Cu. Ft. gas/electric refrigerator with stainless steel doors, a stainless steel microwave/oven combo, and a 3-burner range with oven. Cabinets and drawers are well built using Woodbridge maple cabinetry with hand-crafted mortise and tenon glazed cabinet doors, and all drawers and cupboards are large enough for your camping gourmet requirements.
The exterior galley is equipped with a small RVision refrigerator and a two-burner cooktop mounted on a pull-out shelf under the countertop. The hatch that covers the exterior galley opens to store flat against the side of the trailer, held in place by a magnetic latch.
Entertaining in the Connect 241 RLK
Your guests will be supremely comfortable in the optional theatre seating – we loved the jackknife sofa… and they will enjoy excellent sound from the multi-media stereo – the unit features Bluetooth, DVD and NFC (near-field-connectivity) wireless connectivity so you can stream music from your portable device right into the entertainment system. An omnidirectional HDTV antenna brings in signals from local broadcasting towers
In the Bedroom
The Connect master bedroom takes up the front portion of the floor plan, and the queen bed with pillowtop mattress is conveniently placed so you can walk around it. Under-bed storage is easily accessible, with plastic bins to help you organize your gear. The closet space is well suited to a trailer of this size.
I n the Bathroom
For a trailer of this size, the 241 RLK provides a spacious bathroom complete with a full-size shower, foot-flush toilet, and a vanity.
The Bottom Line…
All in all, the Connect line is a very attractive and well-appointed choice for the active RV family. We were very impressed with the overall quality, and with the thoughtful addition of items that are not normally included with a trailer of this size and price point – from the fibreglass front cap, one of the features included in the Platinum option package, to the rear ladder and cargo storage system, this is a trailer that sets the benchmark for the category.
The Connect 241 RLK is covered by a 24-month hitch to bumper manufacturer’s limited warranty.

Review of the 2021 KZ Escape E17 Hatch Travel Trailer
Howard J. Elmer Mar 10, 2021 5 min read
Having read through all the press releases, I can see that the key element of the Escape is a 60-by-66-inch hatch that opens the rear wall of the trailer. The advantage is obvious. All manner of gear and bikes are easy to load/unload with almost a full wall of access. No more struggling with bicycles through the man door – this innovation turns these smaller travel trailers into cargo haulers. In fact, this new design feature straddles the line between a real toy-hauler and a conventional trailer. The Hatch is being offered in three lengths to start, and they are aimed at the lightweight end of the market – which is also where many first-time buyers look.
As most RVers have seen, the first year of COVID restrictions and lockdowns have boosted the sale of RVs to new records as a whole new group of buyers who want to get out of the city are snapping them up. With that thought in mind, I think KZ is being smart at aiming the Hatch at that group. They are doing that by offering it as a 14-foot, 17-foot or 20-foot model for starters. These under-20-foot, 3,000-pound trailers are easily loaded, allowing campers to carry everything from coolers and lawn chairs to bicycles and kayaks. With these weights, these trailers will also be towed by a very wide variety of vehicles – particularly attractive to current owners of mid-size SUV/crossovers.
The other effect of this new camper surge is the competition for campground spaces. Federal and provincial parks have just reported that booking reservations at this time of year (February) are double what they were last year. That just verifies the demand. It also puts another optional feature on the Hatch into another light as well.
An optional Off-Grid/Off-Road package turns these units into great boondocking travel trailers. Whether you want this because your hobbies/pursuits regularly take you off the beaten path – or because you can’t find a serviced campsite – this package will extend your stay comfortably. The package includes a 100W roof-mounted solar panel, 1,000W inverter with dedicated 110V outlets, solar controller, portable Bluetooth audio player and flashlight, tongue-mounted bike rack, griddle, solar on the side (for additional solar power), aluminum wheels with mud tires, extra ground clearance, electronically-controlled heated holding tanks and double entry steps. That heated tank feature is key – it extends your camping season (or lets you start early).
The layout of this trailer puts the bathroom in the center with the refrigerator beside it and the rest of the galley across the aisle. A front queen bed sits in the nose, while at the rear (where the hatch is located), twin dinette tables are easily removed to provide the floor space needed for in-transit cargo and toys. When not hauling stuff, this rear dining position can convert to overnight accommodation – effectively giving you sleeping space for four.
An available rear screen also gives you the option of leaving that rear hatch open when the weather is fine.
Other standard features on the Hatch include an aerodynamic front profile with a front windshield, Alum-a-Tough seamless roof, power awning with porch light, two-burner cooktop, microwave, an 8 cu.-ft., 12V refrigerator, and a 20K BTU furnace.
This simple, yet very effective design idea will be attractive to many experienced as well as first-time RVers. The season will be here soon – if you are in the market, check out the Hatch.

Equipped with an oven and range hood, you can fry, boil and bake all you need in the Show Stopper kitchen. The range hood comes with a 12V light and an exhaust fan.
