Islands To Visit in Lakshadweep

Agatti island.

Agatti Island will be your first stop as you land at Lakshadweep . The island boasts of having some of the finest beaches and offers tons of water sports activities.  The beaches are clean and the water is deep blue teeming with the most colorful and diverse underwater world.

Where To Stay:

Local guesthouses and a few private-run resorts are the only options.

Do check the latest update on the official tourism site.

Agatti Island

Bangaram Island

Surrounded by a shallow lagoon this island is one of the most beautiful islands of Lakshadweep. It boasts world-class corals and rich marine life. From shipwreck snorkeling sites to hidden beaches with hermit crabs, the bluest of the blue ocean to a lagoon full of sea turtles, Bangaram fits the bill perfectly for a perfect beach experience.

Where To Stay:

The only option is to stay at the Bangaram Island resort which is run by SPORTS ( Lakshadweep Tourism ).

Travel Time

  •  From Agatti: 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the boat.

Bangaram Island

Pareli 1 & 2

These tiny islands surrounded by the shallow lagoon on one side and the deep sea on the other can be covered by foot in 15-30 minutes. The shallow lagoon is home to numerous sea turtles whereas the deep sea is home to sharks and stingrays.

The island is full of ( hungry 😉 ) hermit crabs, and sea turtles.

No options. These islands can be visited as day trips from Bangaram, Agatti or Thinnakara

  • From Agatti: 30 -75 min depending on the boat
  • From Bangaram: 20-40 min depending on the boat
  • From Thinnakara: 15 min

Lakshadweep Itinerary

A bite-sized island midst a shallow lagoon makes Thinnakara an ideal place for vacation. It is isolated and just a few cottages are dotted on the shores. It is a perfect escape for those who want to be away from the rush of life. You can snorkel, sail out in your kayak, play beach volleyball, and relax in a hammock doing nothing.

Even at times, it might happen you are the only one with the resort staff on the island.

Cottages on the Island

  • From Agatti: 20-40 min depending on the boat.

Thinnakara

Kadamat Island

Kadmat is one of the most stunning islands in the archipelago. You will find dolphins cleaving through the clear blue waters, sea turtles all around might come to greet you on your way to Kadmat from Agatti.

The phenomenal sweep of talcum-powder sand with dramatic waves breaking across the bay is an everyday thing here. Apart from the scenic vista, the island also offers various water sports activities like diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and paragliding to name a few. Some of the best diving spots can be found here.

Kadmat Island Resort – You have an option of NonAC tents and AC rooms to choose from. However, the Non-AC tents are a little far from the main resort.

Kadamt

Minicoy Island

Minicoy Island is a beautiful coral island dotted in the Arabian Sea full of dense coconut groves, a long stretch of white powdery beaches, and an amazing marine world. The island is distinct from the rest of the islands in terms of culture, lifestyle, and language. You can find a lot of influence from Maldivian and South Indian culture on this island.

There are three tourist cottages and one 20-bed tourist home.

Minicoy Island

Kalpeni Island

Kalpeni is famed for its bewitching landscape with the small islets Tilakkam & Pitti and an uninhabited island on the north called Cheriyam. You can walk to Cheriyam island from Kalpeni during low tides but make sure you are not barefoot.

The islands of Kalpeni were reshaped because of a huge storm in the 1800s and the formation of the beautiful corals is attributed to this storm. It has the largest lagoons among all the islands of Lakshadweep. These lagoons are quite shallow and are perfect for all sorts of water sports activities. You can also explore the Sait Moinuddin mosque while on the island.

Koomel Beach Resort is the only resort for tourists and it is run by SPORTS (Lakshadweep Tourism).

Kalpeni

Kavaratti Island

It is the capital of Lakshadweep and the most developed of all the islands. Apart from sun-drenched white sandy beaches, and amazing coral reefs, you can also explore the aquarium and museum on the island.

Ujra Mosque constructed by Sheikh Mohammad Kasim in the 17th century is one of the most prominent attractions on the island and draws a lot of tourists. The island also offers a plethora of water sports activities like kayaking, snorkeling, parasailing, and scuba diving at a very reasonable rate.

I am planning a trip to lakshdweep in january, I will be alone and do not want to spend much on stay. Please suggest whether i can get some cheap stay after reaching there, or prebooking/e-booking is required? Please note I am a solo traveller and I generally focus on sightseeing and local cuisines and culture. I can manage with some cheap accomodation.

December 9, 2016 at 7:12 pm

Hi Prashant, you need a permit to travel to Lakshadweep. This permit is arranged by SPORTS or any other travel agent which takes care of your lodging (the details of travel agents are on the SPORTS Lakshadweep website). We would highly recommend a pre-booking. For more details, you can check the website of SPORTS Lakshadweep.

I want to plan my own trip and not go for any package. Will Sports help me get permit if I only book my lodgings through them?

Thanks for detailed tour guide. I really like to visit this place. Carry some nostalgic memories. My father was working in Minicoy long time back when I was a toddler. So I wan to see the place again taking with my mother. Can you please suggest a 2-3 days (max) itinerary covering Minicoy. I want to see Minicoy.

December 3, 2016 at 10:30 am

Glad you liked our post, Minicoy is near Kalpeni & Kavaratti so either you can plan to visit one of the islands and visit Minicoy on a day trip or you could check weekend cruise packages from Cochin.. hope that helps

January 21, 2017 at 9:41 am

Awesome post! It’s so confusing the information on google about these islands! Just wondering – is Minicoy an inhabited island? Just because you mention that there are 3 guest houses owned by locals there. Also if we were to book a few days through SPORT and stay at their accomodation, could we extend our stay and stay at local accomodation somewhere? Do we need to apply to SPORTs to be able to stay in local accomodation? I just assume local places would be cheaper?

' src=

July 26, 2017 at 4:50 pm

hey..Thanks for the informative post.. Though I have a query.. you have given quite a detailed information of the islands while SPORTS website is mostly about about the cruise packages and they dont cover all the island either. Did you guys make your own itinerary and visited the place via flight. Would it be possible for you to give an idea about the ititnerary you followed.

My journey led me to the enchanting Agatti Island in Lakshadweep, and the experience was nothing short of magical. I was immediately captivated by the pristine beauty that unfolded before me. The beaches of Agatti are adorned with soft white sand and surrounded with turquoise waters.

Having personally explored Agatti, I was captivated by its geography, especially the enchanting lagoon that surrounds the island. Picture a lagoon as a shallow, clear-blue playground nestled between the land and the deeper sea, shielded by natural barriers like coral reefs or sandbars. Agatti’s lagoon is like a magical, transparent pool where marine life thrives, creating a stunning underwater world.

Now, let’s talk about corals – these are living organisms that build intricate structures underwater. They come together to form coral reefs, which are like bustling cities beneath the sea. The coral reefs around Agatti are like underwater gardens, bursting with a riot of colors and teeming with fish and other sea creatures. It’s like stepping into a vibrant, underwater wonderland.

Agatti, though a small island, is a haven of tranquility and safety, especially for families with kids. One of the notable features that add to its charm is the absence of rough waves, creating a gentle and serene environment along its shores. This makes the island a particularly safe and enjoyable destination for children, allowing them to play in the shallows with ease.

During my visit, I discovered a myriad of activities tailored for all ages. The calm waters made it perfect for family-friendly adventures, and I took full advantage of the offerings. A glass-bottom boat ride provided a captivating glimpse into the underwater world without getting wet, making it an ideal choice for those wanting to explore the vibrant marine life without diving in.

For a bit of adrenaline, the banana boat ride was an absolute thrill. The island’s tranquil waters transformed into a playground of laughter and excitement as we rode the waves. Snorkeling, another highlight of my Agatti escapade, offered a more immersive experience into the underwater wonders. From vibrant corals to colorful fish, every dip was a journey into an aquatic realm.

Also, one of the question I had before visiting Agatti was whether veg food is available on the island.

Yes, vegetarian food options are available on Agatti Island. While the cuisine in Lakshadweep, including Agatti, is prominently influenced by seafood due to its coastal location, you will find vegetarian dishes as well.

I discovered small stalls offered a variety of vegetarian dishes on the beach, including traditional Indian fare such as rice and dal, veg biryani, and comforting veg 2-minute noodles. From the refreshing taste of coconut water to the crunch of banana chips, these stalls provided a taste of local flavors.

Floating in the clear blue waters of Lakshadweep, snorkeling was an amazing experience for me. I hoped to see a turtle, but unfortunately, I couldn’t spot one. Still, watching the colorful fish and exploring the lively coral gardens was like entering a whole new world beneath the waves.

The water was so clear that every movement of the fish seemed like a dance, and the ocean’s gentle rhythm added to the magic of the moment.

Also, my 9-year-old boy also loved this experience. so can say it is safe for kids.

Also, you do not need to know swimming to try this experience.

  • One of the unique and enchanting features of Lakshadweep, specifically at certain locations, is the ability to witness both the sunrise and sunset from the same spot.
  • Bioluminescence in Lakshadweep can be experienced along the shores of certain islands, especially during specific seasons. Notable locations where this enchanting phenomenon occurs include beaches on islands like Agatti, where the radiant glow of bioluminescent plankton transforms the coastal waters into a mesmerizing display after sunset. It’s advisable to check with local guides or authorities for the best times and locations to witness this magical natural light show.
  • The consumption and sale of alcohol are restricted in most parts of the islands.
  • Lakshadweep became a part of India after gaining independence on August 15, 1947. It was in 1956 that the region, along with the Union Territory of Laccadive, Minicoy, and Amindivi Islands, was officially incorporated into the Indian Union. The islands were later renamed as Lakshadweep in 1973. Since then, Lakshadweep has been an integral part of the Republic of India.

Mobile network connectivity can be limited, especially on remote islands. Operators such as BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) and Airtel are known to have a presence on certain islands.

In conclusion, Lakshadweep is a tropical paradise that beckons travelers with its untouched beauty and vibrant marine life. As someone who has explored its shores, I can confidently say that this archipelago has earned its place as India’s new favorite destination. So, if you’re ready for a serene escape and a rendezvous with nature, pack your bags and get ready to discover the magic of Lakshadweep – an experience that will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on your soul.

Lakshadweep , formerly the Laccadives , is a group of islands situated 200–440 km (120–270 mi) off India 's west coast in the Arabian Sea. They are India's only coral atolls and geologically a part of the same chain as the Maldives .

Islands [ edit ]

Map

  • 8.275 73.052778 3 Minicoy Island — the southernmost island with serene beaches, turquoise lagoons, and a rich cultural heritage

Understand [ edit ]

Lakshadweep is India's smallest union territory with just 32 km², and one of only three Indian administrative divisions with a Muslim majority (the others being Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh ). The name literally means "a hundred thousand islands" in Sanskrit ( lakṣa = "lakh" or "hundred thousand" and dvīpa = "island"). It has ten inhabited islands, 17 uninhabited islands with attached islets, four newly formed islets and 5 submerged reefs. As of 2011, Lakshadweep had a population of 64,473.

Lakshadweep is one of the most beautiful destinations that you could visit during your holidays with beautiful marine life, relaxed village life, some tourist resorts and cherished mosques.

Climate [ edit ]

Peak season is December to May, when it is cooler and drier. May to September is the main (southwest) monsoon season, but the October–November northeast monsoon can also be rainy.

Talk [ edit ]

The people of the islands are ethnically similar to the people of Kerala and are of mixed Indian and Arab descent. They speak a dialect of Malayalam called Jeseri , except in Minicoy where Mahl , a form of Dhivehi (the language of the Maldives) is spoken.

Get in [ edit ]

lakshadweep travel world

Everybody , Indian or otherwise, requires a special permit to visit Lakshadweep. By far the easiest way to obtain it is to book a package tour through the government's tour operator, the Society for Promotion of Nature Tourism and Sports (SPORTS) , or arrange a hotel to sort it out for you; in fact, for foreigners, accommodation booked in advance is a precondition for being allowed to visit.

Foreigners are restricted to the islands of Agatti, Bangaram and Kadmat , plus transit only (maximum of 12 hours) in Kavaratti. Indians may visit the other islands as well, but accommodation is very limited (see Sleep ).

Nearly everybody going to Lakshadweep has to pass through Kochi , from where you can continue by plane or ship.

By plane [ edit ]

By ship [ edit ].

lakshadweep travel world

The MV Tipu Sultan, MV Bharat Seema, MV Amindivi, MV Minicoy, MV LakshadweepSea, MV Arabian Sea and MV Kavaratti operate between Kochi in Kerala and various islands in Lakshadweep. The trip takes 14–18 hours depending on the destination island. The first four are basic 1960s-era ferries but fairly well maintained and tolerably comfortable and provides a comfortable journey. The Tipu Sultan stopped its service. The newly built MV LakshadweepSea and MV Arabian Sea are provided with three classes of accommodation (air-con cabin, air-conreclining seats and deck) plus a cafeteria, snack bar and upper deck promenade. Return fares are around ₹3800 in air-con seats, which is the cheapest class available for packages. The MV Kavaratti is used mainly for operating "Samudram Cruise Package" by Society for promotion of Nature Tourism and Sports (SPORTS), a body under the Lakshadweep Administration, though the ship also transports passengers from Kochi to various islands and between islands. The ship is centrally air-conditioned and has cabin class accommodation mainly for tourists. In addition it has bunk bed accommodation for passengers. The tourists stay on the ship for four nights and five days and visit one island per day for water sports and other activities.

All published sailing schedules are subject to sudden changes; not only can they be delayed, but it's not unknown for a boat to arrive and leave a day early.

There are also occasional cruises directly from Mumbai .

The southernmost island of Minicoy in the Lakshadweep island group is now a permitted entry point.

Get around [ edit ]

Both boat and helicopter transfers are available from Agatti to Bangaram and Kadmat. The helicopter (US$150 return) may be the only option in monsoon season from May to September.

By boats/ferries: these can be used for getting around from one island to the other.

Once on an island, there aren't too many options as the islands themselves are very small: most of them are less than 10 km in length and less than a kilometre in breadth between their extremes. You can travel by foot or hire a bicycle.

See and do [ edit ]

lakshadweep travel world

There are basic leisure tours together with sea and lagoon based tours. There are plenty of opportunities for scuba diving, yachting, pedal boating, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, snorkelling and sunbathing. You may also visit local houses, the Marine museum, Lighthouse and a few local industries.

  • Diveline Agatti . Operates the scuba diving shop at the Agatti Resort. ₹3000 per dive .
  • Lacadives . Operates the scuba diving shops at the Bangaram and Kadmat Resorts.

Buy [ edit ]

Lakshadweep is not a budget destination: in addition to the permit issue, there is no tourist infrastructure (hostels, restaurants, public transport etc.) for backpackers. The cheapest sports tours start from around ₹10,000 for four days, but this price is all-inclusive. One can purchase pure coconut powder and coconut oil from the factory situated at Kadmat island. Fish pickles and small souvenirs are available on Kavaratti Island.

The most prized souvenirs from Lakshadweep are traditional handicrafts created out of materials from the sea, such as shells, oysters, pearls and coral.

Eat [ edit ]

Local cuisine is most similar to that of the Malabar region of Kerala. Coconut oil and curry leaves feature prominently in most dishes. Some of the distinctive dishes found on the islands are:

  • Mus Kavaab - a spicy curry of tuna chunks best paired with rice
  • Crispy fried octopus
  • Batla Appam is a specialty of Androth Island. It is a steamed sweet with an idli-like appearance made out of eggs, flour, sugar and cardamom.

Drink [ edit ]

Drink large amounts of coconut water, the most abundant drink on the island. Tap water here is through bore wells and a bit hard. Rainwater harvested during the rainy season is the major source of drinking water. Unavailability of drinking water accounts for a number of islands being uninhabited.

Sleep [ edit ]

There are three full-service resorts in Lakshadweep, which are also the only places where foreigners can stay. All prices listed below are for double rooms and include all meals.

  • Agatti Island Beach Resort . Privately owned, but quite run down; although apparently new cottages are planned. The main attraction is diving, which is better than at Bangaram. 20 beds.
  • Kadmat Island Resort . The choice of scuba divers, this is home to Lakshadweep's first scuba facility. 22 executive huts, 26 family huts. Government-run and basic. ₹8,000/10,000 fan/air-con . ( updated Sep 2018 )
  • Bangaram Island Resort , ☏ +91 9847503595 . 30 non-AC beach huts. They are set back about 55 m from a sandy bay with dining restaurant. Deluxe cottages are on the beach and they face the lagoon. These cottages are quite large and added facilities like fridge (all cottages). All cottages overlook the beautiful beach and lagoon and are eco-friendly and have a tranquil atmosphere. Double ₹15000, single ₹10000 . ( updated Jan 2019 )

In addition, basic government resorts open to Indian citizens only are available at Minicoy, Kavaratti and Kalpeni. Some packages offered by SPORTS include accommodation on board the ship, with only day visits to the islands.

Stay safe [ edit ]

Consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited in all islands except Bangaram. Picking up corals is a punishable crime.

Go next [ edit ]

The only way out is back to Kochi .

A Practical Travel Guide to India’s Coral Paradise, Lakshadweep

In March 2022, I embarked on a five-day, solo summer journey to paradise, packaged as the smallest union territory of India – Lakshadweep. To be honest, it felt like I died and went to heaven for those five days, if heaven were sunny, sandy and endlessly blue. Not only are the coral islands visually and soulfully breathtaking – crystal clear waters, powdery beaches, unbelievable marine life and the most welcoming people – but for the entire duration of my travel to Lakshadweep, I was without a care in the world, even when I lost my boarding pass, got bit by a fish and saw my return flight cancelled! Heaven, amirite?

While I will always rave about my travel adventures in Lakshadweep, there’s a small catch. Planning a getaway to Lakshadweep can get tricky – not because there’s a lack of information – it’s the opposite – but because there are quite a few moving parts involved. So, here’s everything I know about these ‘ hundred thousand islands ‘ in what I hope is a brutally honest and super practical guide to arm you with all you need to head to this coral paradise, with or without company.

About Lakshadweep

Although Lakshadweep is Sanskrit and Malayalam for a hundred thousand islands, the IRL count is a teeny fraction of this number. Twelve atolls, three reefs and five submerged banks house thirty-six islands to make up one of the most picturesque tropical island systems in the world. It’s more lagoon than land, with the former covering 4,200 km², while the latter totals up to a mere 32 km². Smog capital New Delhi , in comparison, is nearly 43 km².

Lakshadweep travel guide

Expect tropical weather, with an average temperature of 27° C to 32° C, the coolest months being December and January, and the hottest being April and May. Between June and October, the South West Monsoon is in full swing.

Coastal climate means humid, sunny, and warm weather. Mornings and evenings can be pleasant and breezy, while afternoons can get bright and sweltering. Agatti is somehow the hottest and most humid of all the islands.

Locals, Culture, and Language

The people of Lakshadweep are probably the kindest, friendliest and most helpful lot I’ve come across. Their willingness to not only strike a conversation but also readily offer a helping hand is a boon to many a traveller, especially when solo.

Religion – Most are descendants of migrants from India’s Malabar Coast, who arrived before the 7th century CE and converted to Islam sometime in the 7th century. The people are warm, with unity and across religions that is absolutely beautiful to observe.

Language – Jesiri or Dweep Bhasha – a musical amalgamation of Malayalam, Tamil and Arabic, written in Malayalam script – is commonly spoken here, as is Malayalam. Locals also speak some Hindi and little English, which are what travellers defer to. If you’re even slightly fluent in Malayalam, communicating here is easy peasy. In Minicoy, locals mostly speak Mahl .

Culture – You will observe typical Indian coastal culture with strong Islamic influences in all the islands except Minicoy, where the culture is closer to that of the Maldives due to its proximity to the island group.

lakshadweep travel world

Food and Alcohol

Two words to describe the food in Lakshadweep? Comforting and delicious.

lakshadweep travel world

The staple cuisine resembles that of Kerala – rice with sambhar or dal, avial , idli or dosa with chutney, stews, coconut-based curries and of course, seafood. Tuna is available almost anywhere, and most travel accommodations in Lakshadweep will feature either tuna or some fish dish for lunch and dinner. That said, there are many vegetarian- and vegan-friendly options to enjoy. Resorts offer a basic continental and Indian spread for breakfast.

For someone with coastal blood coursing through their veins (Mangalorean, at your service), all meals felt like I was eating the food my mum makes – never a bad thing!

Expecting plush restaurants when you travel to Lakshadweep will leave you disappointed. You can find small cafes and eateries on local-inhabited islands. Typically, your accommodation will provide three meals and refreshments – enough to keep you satiated.

Since a majority of Lakshadweep’s population practices Islam, alcohol sale and consumption are prohibited, except in Bangaram, although it’s no party central!

Lakshadweep Travel Planning

Here’s all you need to know about the islands you can visit, the best time to travel to Lakshadweep, how to get there, and more.

lakshadweep travel world

The Islands

Of the 36 islands, 10 are inhabited, of which only a handful are open to travellers. There are plans underway to open more islands and islets to tourism.

  • Inhabited and open to tourists – Agatti, Kadmat , Kalpeni , Kavaratti, Minicoy
  • Uninhabited and open to tourists – Bangaram, Pitti , Thinnakara
  • Inhabited and not open to tourists yet – Amini, Androth, Bitra, Chetlat, Kiltan

Only Agatti, Bangaram and Kadmat are open to non-Indian travellers.

Best time to travel to Lakshadweep

October to April is the best time to travel to Lakshadweep – perfect beach weather. The peak tourist season is in winter, particularly in December, so expect hotel and resort tariffs to increase.

Best time to travel to Lakshadweep

During monsoon, ship-based tourism is closed, although ships may continue operating for locals. Flights and helicopters may operate year-round, making accessibility to Agatti and Bangaram possible. While the rains give a splash of emerald and enhance the beauty of the lagoons, travel during monsoons is not advised.

lakshadweep travel world

I visited Lakshadweep towards the end of March, and it turned out to be a good time to travel – great beach weather without throngs of tourists.

Getting to Lakshadweep

There are only two ways in and out of Lakshadweep – air and sea.

lakshadweep travel world

Air – Presently, the only airport is in Agatti, and only one flight – Air India/Star Alliance ATR 72600 – operates in and out of the island, from Kochi. Travellers typically fly into Kochi, and then Agatti. The flight takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes to reach Agatti. Check-in baggage allowance is limited to 15 kg per person.

Best to book your flights at least 45 days in advance, since seats fill up pretty fast.

I travelled from Bangalore, so my Air India flight followed the Bangalore -> Mysore -> Kochi -> Agatti route and took 4.5 hours.

lakshadweep travel world

If travelling from a city much further than Kochi (e.g., Delhi, Mumbai), book connecting flights via Air India itself. My return flight from Agatti to Bangalore was cancelled, which wasn’t an issue for me because I didn’t need a connecting flight. But those who did and had booked connecting flights on other carriers like Vistara had to rebook at an additional cost.

Ship – Seven passenger ships ply between Kochi and Lakshadweep. The travel time is anywhere between 14 to 18 hours, depending on the destination island.

Lakshadweep travel guide

At the time of my travels, only two ships were in operation.

Island hopping – Inter-island transport is by sea, with vessel sizes depending on the island’s distance. For instance, the vessel from Agatti to Kavaratti and back is a large carrier, while the one to Bangaram is a speed boat.

Lakshadweep travel guide

Travel within islands – On some islands, you can cover the distance from one end to the other on foot. In Agatti and Kavaratti, autos are available for hire. You may also find cycles and mopeds for rent.

Which Island to Visit, and What to Do

If only I could visit them all, I would!

While all islands may seem similar at the surface, each offers something unique and works for different budgets. I couldn’t travel to Kadmat, Kalpeni and Minicoy this time, so I stayed in Agatti, Kavaratti and Bangaram, and took a half-day trip to Thinnakara; here is my take on each.

Lakshadweep travel guide

But first, it’s important to know that most of Lakshadweep’s tourism is managed by SPORTS.

What is SPORTS?

The Society for Promotion of Nature Tourism and Sports, or SPORTS, was formed by the Lakshadweep Administration in 1982 to promote environmentally conscious tourism and to function as the hospitality wing of the Lakshadweep Administration.

SPORTS operates resorts in Bangaram, Kadmat, Kavaratti and Minicoy, tents in Thinnakara, and ship package tours across Kadmat, Kalpeni, Kavaratti, and Minicoy. The Society also operates State Guest Houses and Dak Bungalows of the Administration.

lakshadweep travel world

Whether you book directly or through a travel agent, permits, transfers and most accommodation (except in Agatti) will be via SPORTS.

Air travel-wise, Agatti is your gateway into Lakshadweep since the island houses the Lakshadweep airport. From here, travellers are transferred to the islands of Bangaram and Kavaratti. A good number of travellers don’t stay here, choosing to head to other islands instead.

Lakshadweep travel guide

This doesn’t mean Agatti has nothing to offer. The turquoise waters of the lagoon are home to turtles, diverse corals and fishes in spectacular colours. Kayaking, sailing, snorkelling, scuba diving, fishing and water skiing await all those who choose to stay.

Lakshadweep travel guide

If you’re looking for a slow and serene tropical getaway with a flavour of local island life, Agatti is the island for you. It’s also ideal for those short on time or those who need to stick to a tight budget since accommodation rates start at INR 5,000 per night. If you choose to stay at Agatti, spend at least 2 days and 2 nights here, if not more.

lakshadweep travel world

Accommodation in Agatti – Agatti has no SPORTS-managed accommodation for tourists. SPORTS only operates a Union Territory Guest House, which is meant for government officials and contractors, and as a transit rest-stop for travellers flying into Agatti and then travelling to other islands.

Privately managed accommodations – from resorts to homestays – can be found in Agatti.

You can add Agatti to your island-hopping itinerary as well, choosing to spend at least a day here before, in between or after your time on other islands.

The poster child of Lakshadweep, the tourist-only island of Bangaram is perfect for beach bums, with its jewelled waters and nearly snow-white sand. Save the staff of the Bangaram Island Resort and their families, you won’t find locals here.

Lakshadweep travel guide

Hushed days, balmy evenings and star-speckled nights welcome all who stay at Bangaram. From snorkelling at the coral gardens and the shipwreck, and scuba diving, to crossing the lagoon during low tide to get to a private sandbank, your days will dreamily pass by with a blissful ‘vacay-mode-on’ vibe. The lone resort offers a recreation room with a lounge area, some games, and a decently stocked bar. And if you’re lucky, you may catch bioluminescence as you walk along the shore after dinner!

Lakshadweep travel guide

While Bangaram is perfect for all types of travellers, the demographic skews toward honeymooners and families with small children. Still, I had the pleasure of making the acquaintance of solo travellers, friend groups, girls-only gaggles, and empty nesters.

lakshadweep travel world

Bangaram is a 45-minute speed boat journey from Agatti.

  • For overnight stay at the resort, you will be transferred via a speedboat from Agatti. Spend at least 2 days and 1 night here.
  • Since it’s close to Agatti, you can plan a day trip to Bangaram from Agatti, and return via the same boat. This works well for budget travellers since accommodation prices at Bangaram are pretty steep.

Accommodation in Bangaram – Bangaram Island Resort is the only accommodation available on the island. The resort has beach-facing single and double air-conditioned cottages.

Lakshadweep travel guide

You can book your stay here either through the SPORTS website or the Bangaram Island Resort website.

The capital of Lakshadweep is a 2.5-hour sea journey from Agatti and is bustling with life – human, animal and marine. Kavaratti offers an ambient mix of seaside activities and a true feeling of Lakshadweep’s local life and culture. The scuba diving experience with the Kavaratti PADI-certified dive centre is phenomenal! In fact, it is quite affordable to dive here as compared to other places in India and abroad. Add to this the relatively cheaper stay as compared to Bangaram, it’s a steal to get PADI certified and spend a few days at Kavaratti.

Lakshadweep travel guide

Kavaratti is a haven for travellers who are looking to know more about Lakshadweep’s history and culture. You can spend a day exploring the island from the western jetty all the way to the eastern jetty where the larger ships such as MV Lagoons dock.

lakshadweep travel world

You can explore the island in less than half a day, on an auto or even a cycle. Observe the lighthouse from a distance (no entry inside, sadly), visit the Marine Museum, and pass chicken neck – the narrowest point of the island where you can see the lagoon side and the sea side together, walk to the site of an old beached ship, and chat with locals about their days on the island over a cup of coffee.

lakshadweep travel world

To experience the best of Kavaratti, spend at least 2 days and 2 nights here.

Accommodation in Kavaratti – Tourist stays are on the lagoon side of the island, close to the Western jetty. Expect busy views of the lagoon, with transit vessels and fishing boats docking in and out.

Lakshadweep travel guide

Paradise Island Hut Resort is the SPORTS accommodation available in Kavaratti. 6 air-conditioned double rooms are available.

There are also private homestay options available.

A teardrop-shaped uninhabited island merely 20 minutes away from Bangaram, Thinnakara previously had tents for tourists to spend a few nights in, which were removed, thanks to COVID. They could return in the near future.

lakshadweep travel world

Still, a day trip from Bangaram is possible, with turtles giving you company as your boat makes its way across transparent waters that show off massive coral gardens. At Thinnakara, you can walk the length and breadth of the island and then cut through the middle to visit the lone house whose inhabitants serve sweet elaneer (tender coconut water), fresh toddy and even some mouth-watering coconut jaggery.

lakshadweep travel world

Accommodation in Thinnakara – Only non-air-conditioned tents are available here. At the time of my travels, there were no tents on the island.

Lakshadweep travel guide

Kadmat, Kalpeni and Minicoy

Visiting the islands I missed out on is definitely in my plans for the near future, so until then, this is all I have on Kadmat, Kalpeni and Minicoy.

Kadmat Island Beach Resort has 36 sea-facing air-conditioned rooms and a few standard non-a/c rooms.

Minicoy Island Resort is a 20-bedded stay on the southern side of the island, close to the lighthouse. Each cottage has an open-to-sky bathroom with coral-laid flooring.

Besides these, private stays are available.

Packages and Other Accommodation

Besides the above, you can travel to Lakshadweep through package tours from SPORTS, or private travel agency packages.

Lakshadweep travel guide

Packages under SPORTS

These packages are a no-brainer for hassle-free travel to Lakshadweep since nearly everything except flights – accommodation, permits, transit fees, food and refreshments – is covered. Water sports may require an additional payment over the package rates.

Details and bookings for SPORTS packages can be found/done here –

Packages through Private Agencies

Private packages from reputed travel agencies include cruises, on-island stays, water activities and sightseeing. Often, travel agents will make your stay arrangements through SPORTS-managed accommodations, except in Agatti.

While it’s tempting to plan a DIY trip, I strongly recommend having it managed by a private operator. They work closely with SPORTS to coordinate bookings, permits, fees, and transits. I went via Smile India , who had previously managed my family trips to Rajasthan and Bali.

Permits and Paperwork

Entry into Lakshadweep for tourists is strictly regulated, and a permit is required, for both Indian and foreign nationals.

To obtain a permit, keep the following handy –

lakshadweep travel world

  • Itinerary – dates of travel, mode of transport, name of the package if applicable, a break-down of the time spent at each island, accommodation
  • Name, age, gender, nationality
  • Police clearance certificate (PCC). Contact your local police station and state that you require a PCC for Lakshadweep. Processing could take 10-20 days
  • Identification documents (Aadhar card, etc.), and three passport-sized photographs
  • Foreign nationals would have to submit copies of their passport and a valid Indian visa in addition to the above

As of March 2022, online applications for entry permits can be submitted.

Processing time – this depends on the type of stay chosen.

  • If you opt for a SPORTS package or a SPORTS resort, the processing time is up to 2 working days after submission of all documents and full payment. Permits for those who’ve booked staying packages will be issued within 7 days of the journey.
  • If you opt for a private hotel, resort or homestay, the processing time is 15- 20 working days after submission of all documents and full payment.

Booking a SPORTS package or SPORTS resort accommodation via a travel agent will minimise the documents required for the permit (no PCC required) and reduce the time taken to process the application.

What to Wear and Pack

For the most part, pack everything you usually would if you were travelling to any other beach destination. Still, note these important points.

lakshadweep travel world

  • Cotton shirts, dresses, shorts and pants in light colours. The more covered you are, the better because the sun isn’t always your friend. Also, it’s best to dress modestly
  • At least one swimsuit or a pair of swimming trunks. Bikinis are not allowed, except in Bangaram and Thinnakara
  • A cap or a wide-brimmed hat
  • Polarized sunglasses
  • Flip-flops or beach sandals. I also carried a pair of aqua shoes to prevent cuts from stepping on corals
  • While the resorts provide towels, I carried my own quick-dry towel, which doubled as a bathing suit cover-up and as a blanket for evenings on the beach

Personal Care –

  • Carry sunscreen, and reapply every 2 to 3 hours. I packed my trusted Earth Rhythm SPF 50 PA ++++ for the face and Biotique SPF 75 UVA/UVB Lotion for the body
  • The resorts provide basic soap, so carry your own toiletries like toothbrushes, toothpaste, face wash, shampoo, conditioner, and body lotion
  • A first-aid kit with antiseptic liquid/cream, cotton, band-aids, bandages and pills is always good to have, even though resorts may have a kit of their own. I found a dearth of supplies when I was bitten by a fish during a dive in Kavaratti
  • Wet wipes and tissues for mid-journey refreshing

Wallet and documents –

  • Boarding pass, entry permit, accommodation and itinerary documents, ID proof, COVID vaccination proof, and passport with valid visa (for non-Indian nationals)
  • Cash in Indian rupees

lakshadweep travel world

  • A universal travel adapter for foreign nationals
  • Smartphone, charger, earphones
  • A portable charger, if you will be using your smartphone heavily for photography.
  • A waterproof phone pouch to protect your phone from water
  • A DSLR or a point-and-shoot camera, and a GoPro with a hand grip for underwater photography. Else the dive centres will share their footage with you.
  • I carried my Kindle along, for reading by the beach – a blessing for solo travellers.

Refreshments –

  • Snacks for transits and day trips.
  • Lakshadweep follows a no-plastic bottle policy. Your stay will provide drinking water in glass bottles. Carry your own water bottle and refill it.

Lakshadweep Travel Budgeting

Lakshadweep is at a considerable distance from mainland India. This alone drives up costs since supplies need to come from Mangalore or Kochi. The prices are also kept on the higher side to regulate the number of tourists that visit Lakshadweep – it’s why accommodation in Bangaram is relatively expensive. If you’re looking at Lakshadweep as a shoe-string budget destination, you might want to rethink your plans.

Lakshadweep travel guide

That said, a well-rounded trip to Lakshadweep within a sensible budget can definitely be planned.

Here are my hacks to save some big bucks when you travel to Lakshadweep!

  • Planning in advance is key to getting accommodation and the best fares. Use Skyscanner to track dips in airfares.
  • If you’re in South India, take a bus or train to Kochi and then fly from Kochi to Agatti. You can also spend a night in Kochi and explore the beautiful Fort Kochi area.

Suggested Read: My guide to making the best of a day or two in Kochi, under a tight budget .

  • SPORTS packages offer the best of everything, for every budget. Choose one based on the islands you’d like to visit.
  • Avoid staying in Bangaram if you’re on a budget. You can opt for a day trip to Bangaram and return to Agatti, instead of spending the night at Bangaram.
  • Avoid travel to Lakshadweep in December, to save 10% on tariffs.
  • Travelling in even numbers is cheaper since double room costs are halved, which then cost less than the single room tariff.
  • Getting PADI certified in Kavaratti is value-for-money compared to other locations, both within and outside India.

My Lakshadweep Itinerary and Cost

Since this was my first trip post the COVID-19 pandemic, my travel to Lakshadweep was a no-expense-spared, revenge-travel solo journey, one that I absolutely do not regret. 🙂 My original itinerary was only for Minicoy, but I guess the universe had other plans.

lakshadweep travel world

My Lakshadweep travel plan included 2 days and 2 nights at Kavaratti, 2 days and 2 nights at Bangaram, and 2 days and 1 night in Agatti since my return flight got cancelled.

  • Day 1 – Depart Bangalore via flight and land in Agatti. Sea transfer from Agatti to Kavaratti
  • Day 2 – In Kavaratti. Activities included scuba diving, an auto tour of Kavaratti
  • Day 3 – Kavaratti to Agatti by boat. Sea transfer from Agatti to Bangaram. Activities in Bangaram included day-trip to Thinnakara
  • Day 4 – In Bangaram. Activities included snorkelling at the coral garden and the shipwreck site, a walk to the sandbank to catch the sunset
  • Day 5 – Bangaram to Agatti by boat. Spend a night in Agatti due to flight cancellation. Activity included walking around Agatti.
  • Day 6 – Depart Agatti via flight, arrive in Bangalore

I spent INR 109,093 all-inclusive – even snacks, shopping and tips. Here’s a break-up of my costs.

What you need to know before you travel to Lakshadweep

Here’s some important information that you need to know before you jet-set-go to Lakshadweep,

  • Network & Internet – Only Airtel and BSNL networks work here, with BSNL being stronger. Bangaram and Kavaratti resorts provide free WiFi that’s meh.
  • Cash – Don’t rely on digital payments. Carry cash for emergencies, water activities, bar tabs, snacks, and tips.
  • Accommodation – No luxuries and swimming pools here. A comfortable stay with clean rooms, basic amenities, and ever-helpful staff is guaranteed.
  • SPORTS coordinator – You will be assigned a dedicated SPORTS coordinator who will help with transits and any emergencies.
  • Eco-consciousness – Avoid littering and carry your own reusable water bottle. No plastic bottled water here.
  • Tap water in Bangaram – Smells strongly of sulphur, Tap water is treated with a sulphur compound, and while completely safe to use for all bathroom needs, it will tarnish metal that’s not real gold. Drinking water has no odour.
  • Banned items – Taking back coconuts, corals, shells and vinegar is prohibited.

Frequently Asked Questions

While its romantic ambience, hushed locales and picturesque beaches certainly aid this notion, Lakshadweep isn’t exclusively for honeymooners any more than Goa is only for teenagers who like to party. There’s something for everyone here – solo travellers, couples, families, friend groups, culture-buffs, and adventure seekers.

Yes, Lakshadweep is family-friendly. Most families with young children prefer to stay in Bangaram because of the ample open space by the beach and the slightly superior quality of stay. Nevertheless, other islands are also suitable for a wholesome family trip.

Yes, it’s safe for solo travellers. The islands have a negligible crime rate, and the people are so wonderful!. Since almost everything is arranged by SPORTS and your travel agent, you will have nothing to worry about, and can safely explore the islands alone. The only ask is to respect the local culture and customs.

Yes, Lakshadweep is extremely safe for women, and I can’t think of a safer place for a woman to travel to. I travelled alone and had an unbelievably safe and comfortable experience throughout.

Bikinis and swimming/sunbathing in the nude aren’t allowed on the inhabited islands of Lakshadweep. You can wear a bikini in Bangaram and Thinnakara.

Being a Muslim-majority location, alcohol possession, consumption and sale is prohibited. There are talks of this changing though. Alcohol is available in Bangaram.

You can definitely plan a budget trip to Lakshadweep, as long as the budget is sensible. Don’t expect a trip to Lakshadweep under INR 20,000. Follow my budget tips shared above to make the best use of your bucks.

Lakshadweep offers phenomenal scuba diving experiences across Agatti, Bangaram, Kadmat, Kavaratti and Minicoy. A PADI Discover Scuba Dive costs just under INR 3,600 per dive, while a PADI Open Water Diver certification costs around INR 22,000. If you’re looking to get PADI certified, Agatti, Kavaratti and Minicoy are some of the best places to do so.

Fresh tuna pickles and tuna powder from Kavaratti or Agatti – yum! In Thinnakara, you can purchase a 1 kg jar of freshly made coconut jaggery, which is delightful!

If your flight is cancelled, get to Agatti, and ask your SPORTS coordinator to help you look for accommodation for the night. Star Alliance’s flight cancellation policy entitles you to an accommodation reimbursement of INR 1,500 per day because Lakshadweep falls within Kochi’s jurisdiction. While you can find accommodation for INR 1,500 per day in Kochi, that’s a no-go in Lakshadweep. Agatti has options from INR 5,000 – your cheapest and best bet.

There’s some unrest in the islands due to developmental plans, talks of privatization, policies to ban beef and lift the alcohol ban, and much more. I will soon write a post talking about all of these points.

Lakshadweep is an island destination that’s waiting to receive its fair share of attention, which it often loses to the likes of Andaman & Nicobar and the Maldives. Filled with marvels at every step of your journey, ones that somehow elevate your spirit yet calm your soul at the same time, a wonderful adventure awaits all who travel to Lakshadweep. This much I promise you. 🙂

Complete Travel Guide to Lakshadweep Islands

Updated on: 28/07/2020

If pristine beaches, white sand and clear azure waters are your idea of paradise then paradise is right here in Lakshadweep. Located in the south western coast of India, Lakshadweep literally means “one hundred thousand islands”. Blue lagoons, brimming sea life, colorful corals and clean beaches give the perfect Laidback vibes . The beauty of these islands is unparalleled and you keep imagining how come there are so few travellers here? The serenity and lack of commercialization is the essence of its beauty and we hope it stays that way. The lack of information about travelling to these islands is again a deterrent so here is a Complete Travel Guide to Lakshadweep Islands to help you plan a tour here.

Lakshadweep

How to Reach

You can only reach Lakshadweep from Kochi so Kochi is aptly called the Gateway to Lakshadweep. All major flight operators connect Kochi to main cities of India and also the World. Agatti is the only island with an airstrip and Air India operates flights from Kochi to Agatti. The flight duration is 1.5 hours.

From Agatti helicopter services are available to Kavaratti (all year round) and Bangaram (only during monsoon).

Lakshadweep islands can easily be reached by sea from Kochi. MV Kavaratti, MV Lagoon, MV Corals, MV Arabian, MV Minicoy, MV Amandivi Sea and MV Lakshadweep Sea are the seven passenger ships that sail from Kochi to the islands. These ships have different classes of accommodation and are equipped with cafeterias, entertainment lounge and medical room with a doctor on call. These ships take around 14-18 hours to reach depending on the island visited. High speed boats also sail between Agatti to Kavaratti, Bangaram and Kadmat in fair season.

The Islands

Lakshadweep is an archipelago of 39 islands with an area of 32 sq kms, out of which 10 are inhabited. Each island is unique and filled with natural beauty. The islands open for tourists are Kavaratti, Kalpeni, Minicoy, Kadmat, Bangaram, Thinnakara and Agatti. However, the entry to these islands is restricted and a permit issued by the Lakshadweep Administration is required to visit it. Foreigners are further restricted only to the islands of Agatti, Bangaram and Kadmat with only transit allowed in Kavaratti (max 12 hours).

Kavaratti, the capital of Lakshadweep is famous for its coral reefs and shallow lagoons. It is rich in corals and marine life which makes it ideal for snorkeling and scuba diving. There is also a 4 day scuba diving course conducted here. You can reach Kavaratti by chopper or boat from Agatti or via a ship from Kochi.

Travelers who book the Samudram Package get a complimentary glass bottom boat ride. The water is so clear that corals are easily visible from the top itself. Kavaratti, the most developed of all the islands here, has a number of hotels and resorts. Airtel and BSNL are the only networks that work here.

lakshadweep shark pool

This is the most popular island in Lakshadweep. Apart from numerous snorkeling sites and shallow lagoons this island also boasts of rich marine life especially hermit crabs and sea turtles. The island is on of the most beautiful ones in the world and is mostly visited by foreigners. The only way to reach Bangaram is from Agatti. From Agatti you can rent a boat to Bangaram from SPORTS (Lakshadweep Tourism Board). Bangaram Island Resort consists of 60 bedded beach cottages and is the only place for accommodation here. Scuba diving, snorkeling, deep sea fishing or even lounging on the beach will keep you busy.

lakshadweep travel world

Thinnakara is a small tear shaped island just opposite Bangaram. They share the same shallow lagoons. This island is mostly isolated apart from a few cottages around. Staying in Thinnakara is like living on a private island. Apart from the usual water sports you can also opt for glass bottom boat ride and kayaking here. On one edge of the lagoon small islets of Parali 1,2,3 and Kalpitty are located. These tiny islands open to shallow lagoons on one side and deep sea on the other side.

lakshadweep travel world

Agatti is the only island in Lakshadweep with an air strip. Agatti is home to some of the finest beaches but a permit is required to visit it. There is no government approved guest houses here only two privately owned ones cater to the tourists. The best way to experience the island is on a bicycle which is readily available here. You can also take a day tour to nearby islands of Bangaram and Thinnakara from here.

lakshadweep travel world

Kadmat is is one of the best diving locations in India. This island is just 8 kms long and 550 m at its broadest point. You can reach Kadmat from Agatti- by air or by boat. This island is known for its marine life. You can see loads of them right from dolphins splashing around to sea turtles to even flying fishes. No wonder SPORTS has a Marine Wealth Awareness Programme to experience it. Kadmat also has a fully functional sports institute to try out the various available here. The Laccadive Kadmat Dive Center and School also offers certificate courses in diving.

SPORTS – Society for Promotion of Nature Tourism and Sports was formed by the Lakshadweep Administration in 1982 to provide tourists a chance to experience the beauty and rich marine life of Lakshadweep in an Eco-friendly manner. They provide standard packages. You can choose the one that suits you the most.

You need to reach Kochi by early morning as tourists will board the ship from Willingdon Island, Kochi around 9-10 am. The timings will wary as per the officials convenience. But still you need to reach Scanning Center for Lakshadweep Passengers by 9:00 am. After cargo formalities, the ship sets sails and you spend the rest of the day on board. If you are not the adventurous type, there is always the option of enjoying the stunning views by lounging on one of the many lounge chairs at the beach. After Lunch there will be a short sightseeing seeing tour of the island. After evening refreshments you are back on board the ship followed by dinner.

Day 3: Kalpeni

Day 3 is same as day 2 only the island is different. Except that we were transferred to the island via a boat. You need to be a little careful while disembarking and embarking the ship to avoid accidents. After lunch at Kalpeni the sightseeing includes a visit to a coconut factory and a T-Shirt factory. You can pick up coconut oil, desiccated coconut powder and coconut laddoos along with pure cotton T-shirts. You can also design your own t-shirt here.

Day 4: Minicoy

This island is far from the others so the sailing time to reach here is more. The on board routine is the same as all the days and you reach the island by 8:30 am. Here the sightseeing is done before going to the beach resort. The sightseeing includes the lighthouse. The climb to reach the top of the lighthouse is via a narrow circular stairway comprising of around 70 steps. The view from the top is heavenly but the climb may be challenging for some. Once you are back on the ship, after dinner the crew arranges for a musical night on the top deck.

Day 4: Kochi

The ship docks at Kochi around 9:00 am (Again the timings may change). A short bus ride transfers you to Juari Cement Factory and your Lakshadweep Samudram Package ends here. You collect your baggage and off you go. Uber is easily available from this point.

Swaying Palm Package

View this post on Instagram   Minicoy Island. The southern most island of Lakshadweep is part of India but still follows Maldives in all other ways. The village is run by women primarily as the men are employed in Merchant Navy. What amazed me is the fact that the islands have a literacy rate of 94%. A post shared by Pooja Samtani (@laidbacktraveller) on Nov 24, 2019 at 8:50pm PST

This is a one island tour to Minicoy only on board a passenger ship from Kochi. The accommodation will be on AC and Non AC cottages at a resort  built on the beachfront. The duration of the package can be selected depending on the arrival and departure of the passenger ship at Minicoy.

The accommodation on the ship has a bunk bed which can be used by two. The diamond class cabins are situated on the upper deck and the gold class accommodations are at the lower deck. The ship operates in favorable weather and usually there is not much rolling so sea-sickness will not be an issue.

What to Expect

lakshadweep travel world

Lakshadweep is known for its shallow lagoons and clear waters that stretch to the horizon. But the beauty of this place does not end here. The place is devoid of urbanization and the perils that come with it. The warmth of the locals and the rawness of this place adds to its beauty. Do not come to Lakshadweep in search of luxurious villas and gourmet food. The resorts are clean and provide all basic facilities. The food is hearty and wholesome which my picky eater of a daughter also enjoyed. Come here to enjoy the place. It will be a treasured experience. The islands are full of marine life and rich corals. The best we can do as a responsible traveller is to enjoy its beauty at the same time try to preserve and conserve it.

What to Carry

lakshadweep travel world

  • All the islands here have changing rooms. Separate for men and women. The changing rooms are equipped with showers and also provide bathing soaps and towels. But to be on the safer side I always carry my travel size Nivea Shower Gel .
  • This part of Earth always faces harsh sun so you need to keep applying sunscreen frequently. I always trust Sun Protek SPF 50 for this.
  • Beaches are where you get to flaunt your colorful beach hats and sunglasses . So make sure you pack them.
  • Swim wear . What is a beach holiday without it. Vibrant sarongs add the necessary glam quotient.
  • Tropical paradise always come with mosquito problems and make sure you carry a mosquito repellent with you.
  •  The islands have limited medical facilities so make sure you carry all your necessary medicines with you.
  • Waterproof phone pouches to safeguard your phone while you are splashing around. I got mine online here.
  • Beach footwear is essential especially in Kalpeni where there is a flood of dead corals on the beach. Good quality ones are easily available online here .
  • Swimming gear that includes Swimming Goggles and Swimming Cap.

Let us help you plan your perfect holiday to Lakshadweep

Lakshadweep is not your regular DIY kind of travel destination. The entry to these islands is restricted and a permit issued by the Lakshadweep Administration is required to visit it. Foreigners are further restricted only to three islands. So if you need any help with your Lakshadweep travel, feel free to contact us and we will curate the perfect holiday for you according to your requirements and budget.

Pristine beaches are my idea of paradise. So I definitely need to look into Lakshadweep. Blue lagoons and coral would be a draw for us as scuba divers. But maybe not after we visit the Shark Pool! Bangaram certainly looks like the spot for great water sports. Although I like the idea of feeling like I am o a private island on Thinnakara. A 3 day trip from Kochi may be a good way for a first visit.

' src=

Wow, these Lakshadweep islands are truly paradise on earth. I love the combination of pristine beaches and fantastic diving spots. As per my favorites, I would definitely go to Agatti island and bike around the island. I would also love a few hours a day sunbathing on one of the Silver sand beaches and a few days diving with the packages you recommended in this article. Thank you for sharing information about this paradise.

' src=

India is somewhere I’ve yet to visit, so I’ve never heard of these islands before. They look, and sound pretty wonderful. Kalpeni looks incredible, and I can just imagine myself snorkeling in those clear waters!

' src=

I have been to India 3 times so far, but I did not know these paradise islands. I haven’t had the chance to be on the Indian islands yet. I would like to come back to India because I love Indian culture, nature and cuisine, so your article inspired me a lot. I am delighted with the island of Kalpeni. I would like to snorkeling in Kalpeni lagoon. Bangaram and Thinnakara also look fantastic. I like your island travel plan and recommendations.

' src=

Thanks for this very comprehensive guide to plan for Lakshadweep. I have traveled quite a lot within India but this wonderful destination is still in my do list. Beautiful India certainly.

' src=

Wow! 39 islands is a lot! So is a 14 hour boat ride, flying is the way to go. I would love to check out the Kalpeni coconut groves and blue lagoon. Bangarams water is absolutely gorgeous. Thanks for introducing me to this area

' src=

Looks like a paradise! I can’t believe how turquoise that water is. This definitely looks like a place I would love to explore. And I absolutely adore your little daughter in the photos. I travel with two daughters myself, and these moments are so special!

' src=

These islands are so beautiful! I think not so many people know the paradise. They are so remote but are good place for the nature lovers.

lakshadweep travel world

Though the Lakshadweep archipelago may appear as a few insignificant dots on the map of India, it is, in fact, a sparkling diamond- and emerald-studded jewel adorning India’s southwestern frontier. It is one of the few marvels left untouched by the encroaching hands of industrialization and progress.

The white beaches, the lagoons that wash its shores with the coral reefs which enclose it, and finally the deep blue sea-all these are symbiotically linked with each other. And, when all these are added up, Lakshadweep is no longer the tiniest of India’s territories but the largest!

While the total area of the 35 islands is a mere 32 sq km and the area of the lagoons enclosed by the coral reef about 700 sq km, the extended sea zone is more than 7,00,000 sq km! This almost makes it the size of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh put together!

Out of the 12 atolls with 35 islands, only one island in each of them is inhabited. All the islands are shaped like a boat with their backs resting on the reef in the east and lagoons washing their shores on the west side. The lagoons are shallow, never more than a couple of meters deep. Just as the sands on the beaches are pure white and sugary, the waters of the lagoons are crystal clear and clean.

Best Time to Visit

The white sandy coastlines, abundant scenic charm and tranquil surroundings make Lakshadweep a popular family as well as honeymooning destination. It is visited by tourists from all around the globe. The best time to visit Lakshadweep is between the months of September and May, when the weather is pleasant and conducive for water sports activities. The temperature remains between 22°C to 36°C and one can partake in adventures like surfing, swimming, canoeing, snorkeling, scuba diving, water skiing, kayaking and so on.

After the summer months, monsoon rains between June and August, make the place even greener. The peak season in Lakshadweep is from December to February.

1. Where is Lakshadweep?

Lakshadweep is a 4200sqkm Lagoon land is located 500km away from Kochi to the Southwest of India. Laksha means Millions, and Dweep means island. But there are no million islands here! Only 36 islands spread on the landmass of 32 sqm, out of which ten are inhabited. That means less than 1% of Lakshadweep province is landmass, and the rest is – “Turquoise water lined with snow-white sand hiding a great marine life and Kaleidoscopic corals to infinity.”

A man sits on a bench under a tree on the white sand beach of Lakshadweep, observing the vivid turquoise-green ocean

It is politically /historically is an essential part of India but far from India’s mainland. There is a story that people in this Islands came to know of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination 14 days after it happened,” – A sociology professor at Calicut university says in an interview.

Except for coconut, they grow nothing. There are no power plants on the island to produce electricity. Starting from tissue paper to vegetables, electronic items, and diesel to generate electricity, everything gets shipped to the island from India’s mainland almost every day.

Lakshadweep History

This is a must-read for every Indian because when I called Airtel customer care asking why there is no data network in Lakshadweep, the lady on the other side replied “Lakshadweep doesn’t belong to India” – How pathetic.

Travelling between islands, we spent lots of time on boats with boatmen. So here are some facts I heard from them.

Who are the first humans to set foot on Lakshadweep?

Locals believe that King Perumal from the Chera dynasty converted to Islam and left for Mecca in 600+ AD from his Malabar empire. So, a set of Hindu sailors came searching for him later when he didn’t return. Their ship got wrecked in a fierce storm near Lakshadweep, and they landed in Bangaram island. Once the weather was fine, they went back to Malabar, observing other islands in Lakshadweep on their way back home. A few months later they came back from the Malabar to settle in Amini island forever.

Arrival of a Muslim saint.

They say a Muslim saint had a dream where Prophet came in his dream asking him to spread Islam across the world. The saint left Jeddah and ended up in Lakshadweep. Initially, the Hindu inhabitants were reluctant to listen to his speeches and sent him away. A girl from the island fell in love with the saint, and they both tried to leave the island. This offended the headman, and they wanted to get the saint killed. At this moment saint called the god for help, islanders turned blind.

When the saint and his wife left the island, all citizens got their vision back. He left to another island performing such miracles and spreading Islam all across. After several incidents, Lakshadweep people believed in him and accepted Islam as their religion. His grave today is a sacred place at Andrott island. So you see Islamic culture mixed with Hindu traditions in Lakshadweep.

Two fishermen walk along the white sand beach beside the turquoise-green Arabian Sea in Lakshadweep, carrying a fishing net in their hands.

The Portuguese & British invasion

The Portuguese came to Kochi to colonise in the 1490s, and residents chased them away. Having Goa in their hands, they made Lakshadweep the seafarers’ centre and looted finely spun coconut coir. Luckily islanders cleverly chased them away after a while.

Life went on, Malabar royal houses ruling Lakshadweep changed, and the Arakakl family took care of Lakshadweep. They say that the rulers were oppressive, which made local islanders approach Tipu Sultan in Mangalore(my hometown) of Karnataka. Tipu was the ruler of Sri Rangapatna in Karnataka because he was a good friend of the Arakkal family at that time.

a boat approaching the shore of lakshadweep

After Tipu talked to the queen of Arakkal, some parts of Lakshadweep was handed over to him! So Tipu, who is known as the Mysore tiger , ruled Lakshadweep. After he died in the 1790s in a battle with the British, five islands under him fell to the hands of the British. So you may find some Kannada speaking citizens in Lakshadweep, they say, but we never met one.

The facts/stories are yet to get riveting

A king from the Arakkal family came to the island with a British officer to check on his citizens. Seeing many difficulties in that isolated land, the king borrowed money from British officers to provide basic facilities for the islanders. 4 years later, unable to repay the loan, he sold the island to the British forever until 1947.

One last exciting historical fact about Lakshadweep

After 1947, when independent India was figuring out things as an individual country, geographically isolated Lakshadweep was eyed by Pakistan. Though the physical distance between Pakistan and India is more,  Sardar Patel (Home minister then) understood the situation and took immediate action.  Mudaliyar brothers from Malabar left to Lakshadweep on Sardar Patel’s command with battalion available and hardly any weapons to hoist our flag on the island. After hoisting the flag, they saw a ship with a Pakistan flag sailing towards Lakshadweep to take over Lakshadweep! This is literally like a hairline finish!

2. Why visit Lakshadweep?

You travel to Lakshadweep to chill – Have relaxed days, mingling with locals without having any fixed plan or with that checklist of “places to visit in Lakshadweep” – Keep it easy in Lakshadweep

If you walk 10m away from the white sandy shore with your snorkelling gears into the glittering turquoise water, you see the prismatic coral underwater along with Nemo swimming (There are 856 species of fish – All I know is Nemo – Clownfish). The islands are so small that, whenever you drive here on the road surrounded by Coconut groves, you hardly lose sight of the sea. With regulated tourist influx, the marine life and land are preserved ecologically well.

With a 66000 population as of 2022, it feels like there are more coconut trees than humans. The islands are so less populated that you start recognising the local residents after staying on an island for four days, and they do the same with a broad smile. If you want to spend a splendid time by the cleanest beaches in India at a pocket-friendly place, you must travel to the less-visited place in India- Lakshadweep.

Check our detailed post “ India Travel Guide – Extensive Tips from an Insider ” to know everything you need to know before travelling to India.

3. How to get to Lakshadweep.

You can get to Lakshadweep by either flight or cruise. If you already know us, we aren’t cruise fans. So we recommend you fly to Lakshadweep. The Cruise trips really won’t let you visit all possible islands. Instead they drop you off at Agatti for a few hours and take you ahead.

Indian tourists disembarking from a passenger turboprop at Lakshadweep Airport.

Whether you take a cruise or a flight, Kochi in Kerala is your starting point. Only a few Indian cities have direct flights to Agatti in Lakshadweep. So you must plan to land in Kochi first.

Kochi is a fantastic town with great food, streets filled with colonial architecture along with traditional Malabar buildings. Spend two-three days in Kochi. From there, you can either fly or take a ship/cruise based on your budget and time constraints.

Wondering how to plan your trip to India and confused on crafting your itinerary? Check our post “ Ultimate Guide to Craft your India Travel Itinerary ” – We help you pick right things based on your taste and time you have

How to travel in and around Lakshadweep?

Once you are there on the island, boats are your means of transport. There is a chopper service to go island hopping, but expensive.

Honestly, you don’t need anything to commute in one island. The islands are so small that you can walk between two endpoints easily! This jeep belongs to our resort owner and we just went on a short drive.

A group of four Indian men in an open jeep parked at the edge of white sands by the turquoise-green Arabian Sea in Lakshadweep.

4. Things to know before you travel to Lakshadweep

Lakshadweep is not flocked by tourists because you need special travel permission to get into the island- even if you are an Indian.

Indian tourists can email their documents ( Hotel booking, An official ID like passport or Adhar card as proof of citizenship/DOB/ address) to: [email protected] . For foreigners, the entry permit is given only when they are on an Indian tourist Visa. This approach for getting permission is cheaper but slower. I read online confessions of people whining about authority’s slow response for more than a month.

Best Lakshadweep tourist Package

We approached Chediyar holidays Lakshadweep , and we got our permit within 15 days. So we really recommend you to go through them. You can book your hotel rooms, boat trips, scuba and snorkeling through them – Basically everything you can do in Lakshadweep – a complete tourist package!

Foreign travellers – Don’t carry any foreign currency. Carry only Indian Rupees. You don’t find currency exchange centres here.

No “Non-Lakshadweep” resident is allowed to buy property in Lakshadweep. So you don’t find those standard resort groups here. A prestigious Indian hotel group began the construction of a resort, and it is stopped now for various issues.

How many days to spend in Lakshadweep ?

Anywhere between 5 to 7 days is good to explore Lakshadweep.Tourists are not allowed stay in Lakshadweep beyond 7 days.

Each agent can craft your Lakshadweep itinerary with some of the prettiest places to visit based on your number of days budget. Or you can pick one of their itineraries suitable for you. But every itinerary is similar – Scuba diving, fishing, snorkelling across various islands. And maybe visiting one or two religious monuments, including Pickup/drop at Agatti airport and boat rides between islands.

The only way to explore Lakshadweep is going with a tour package. Because of its geographical isolation and openness, Lakshadweep is a highly protected area. So most time, tourists aren’t allowed to stay beyond 7 days and you have to be accompanied by local agents.

Where all can you go in Lakshadweep?

Out of 36 islands, 17 are habited, and you are allowed to travel to only 10 islands of Lakshadweep- As a Union territory (British called it Laccadives), it is governed by an administrator appointed by India’s President. You don’t find a military presence here. In the middle of the Arabian sea, India’s small union territory receives high security from the Indian military, which is based on islands restricted to regular citizens.

Is Lakshadweep underdeveloped?

I don’t want to call Lakshadweep underdeveloped- With such giant geographical isolation from mainland India, what you get in Lakshadweep is more than what you can think of. Except for coconuts, they grow nothing. But they have plenty of Seafood. Fishing in certain areas are banned, but it is the main occupation of people. India mainland sends diesel here to generate electricity. So don’t expect a typical beach resort town vibe here.

Is there internet in Lakshadweep?

You hardly get internet there – Except BSNL, none of the cellular network data works here. So using a digital wallet for paying is out of option.

Some general tips to travel in Lakshadweep

I was expecting seafood delicacy in Lakshadweep but was quite disappointed. Somehow, the resort guys thought we wanted only chicken for three days and they cooked Chicken dishes for all three days. On the last day, we convinced them to make us Lakshadweep seafood which tasted average. Vegetarian food is mostly influenced by Malabar, and hence veg food here is better than Non-Veg food.

Buy bottled water. With hardly any sweet water source, Lakshadweep’s recycled seawater isn’t good for drinking for tourists who aren’t used to it.

There is a hospital in the capital Karavatti and a few more infirmaries that provide basic necessities.

Tanning and Sunburns are an indication of a good beach vacation. Agreed. But our sunburn was so strong that we all shed our skin like snakes later! My skin was so burnt with my sleeves shirts and swimming shorts that it hurt . So carry 40-50 SPF Sunscreen and apply every one hour.

Don’t expect nightlife in Lakshadweep

There are absolutely no party scenes here. Agatti sleeps by 8 pm and makes every wave sound audible. Most resorts let you make a campfire and lends their music system to the party unless you create chaos to disturb the neighbours.

Alcohol is banned on the island, but each tourist can carry one bottle while arriving (Double check this info- Some confusion here regarding tourists using alcohol. Ask Mr Saeed from Chediyar Holidays , before you leave – he will clarify)

Most islands sleep by 8 PM. It was hard to get even bottled water after 8. Anything you want to buy, do it before 8 PM.

Lakshadweep marine life resides in an eco-sensitive area. So be a responsible tourist by not stepping on coral reefs underwater while diving. Our Scuba instructor Mukbil explained that sometimes tourists get overexcited and try to touch/pluck corals. Corals are living organisms like you and me – Let us not kill them and ruin the ecosystem.

5. How much does Lakshadweep trip cost?

As a group of six, Lakshadweep turned out to be one of the cheapest destinations for us. It cost us 2500Rs/person/day in 2021- This includes -Entry Permit, standard beach villa room, three meals, boat drives between the island, one scuba dive, unlimited snorkelling at various spots, kayaking. And excluding, flights to get there. If we wanted to go or another dive, it cost 4500Rs/person for every extra dive.

To go to different islands, using boats is the only way. These public boats won’t leave until full, or you have to pay for the whole boat that can carry six-eight passengers.  So the cost may hike if you are in a smaller group .

6. Best Things to do in Lakshadweep – 5 Days Itinerary

A. watch your flight landing on agatti airport runway..

I have landed at 30+ airports across various cities in the world. Most flight journeys are boring except Ladakh, where I was captivated by the bird’s eye view of the Himalayas. But I haven’t seen anything like the Agatti runway! The longest length of Agatti when I measured on google maps shows 7km. Imagine a 120m wide black runway that looks floating, lined with green bushes and white sand wholly surrounded by bright turquoise water.

So the first sight of this island heaven is from your flight. Those with aerophobia may find the landing scary, but it is one of the most beautiful sights of my life. But capturing the frame is as tricky as getting a Lakshadweep travel permit. We even knocked on the cockpit door asking if pilots can click the floating runway photo- Because it is almost impossible to click the frame from the passenger seat.

b. Go Scuba Diving and Snorkeling

It is an absolute crime if you don’t go scuba diving when you travel to Lakshadweep. If you compare the marine life quantity to the Red Sea, Lakshadweep is a baby. But it is still a lot for occasional scuba divers. As it was my first ever scuba dive in my life, I thought I couldn’t do it. But the instructor ensured my safety.

school of small fish and scuba drivers underwater in lakshadweep

The boatmen take you to particular spots where marine life is great for scuba diving. But to observe corals snorkelling, a 50m walk from your room on the white sand is enough to get transposed to a psychedelic underwater world. Make sure you wear light shoes that don’t absorb water because many sunken shipwrecks have metal plates stuck to the waterbed underneath.

Yellow fish

The underwater world is totally disconnected from our world. That transition in the noise from birds chirping to hearing water flowing is unexplainable. The colours of corals and fish swimming around the sunken ship make you forget your world. My diving instructor Muqbil used to dive deeper, snap his fingers gently and a huge school of fish used to come up to the surface.

c. Have a hammock dream.

A man peacefully sleeps in a hammock under a tree on the white sand beach of Lakshadweep.

If you are a non-regular sailor like my friends and me, you will be tired and wants to lay down. But Lakshadweep beachscape is so captivating that you hardly feel like entering your room. The soft sand is great too, but the local residents usually come out in the evening to spend their time at the beach. So if you want a bit of isolated snoozing time, watching every palm leaf swaying above or the turquoise water turning gold in the far is your heavenly “Me Time.”

d. Go Island hopping and fishing.

Sometimes, you fall in love with an island so much that you tend not to move your butts from there. When the underwater coral world is just a 10m walk from the room, and you get decent food whenever hungry, why would you move out? But the charm of experience lies in two things – Scuba diving and riding the boats.

You get to talk to local boatmen/fishers there. They teach you how to go fishing using the sharp hook. You may even see a group of men standing with the net widespread, waiting for the fish to get trapped at shallow lagoons. While diving, we never saw a turtle, but the fishers had caught a turtle in the net, which they released immediately.

two fishermen chopping fish on the boat while sailing on turquoise green water of lakshadweep islands

As a Mangalorean, I never say no to Seafood. So what our boatmen cooked then and after that catching, some medium-sized ish was the most delicious food of Lakshadweep. The moment they get the fish to the resort, I find them cooking in a style that isn’t of their own but made to suit tourists. So if you go island hopping, you witness fishing, you can try fishing and eat the best-authentic Lakshadweep food.

e. Lose yourself at sunset.

What is so great about Lakshadweep sunset- One more beach, as usual, the sun goes down magically, creating a splash of colours anywhere else. The magic here is you don’t have to go hunting to look for a perfect sunset watching spot. You don’t have to grab that perfect seat in a place to rejoice in the sunset – Because every corner of Lakshadweep is a sunset watching point.

brilliant bluish-orange sky during sunset behind the palm trees in Lakshadweep creates a stunning view

Be it by the beachside where kids are flying the kites or by boat on your way back to Kavaratti, as long as you face West, sunset in Lakshadweep is magical. The sun looks bigger than usual, turning the turquoise water to grey and copper. So you don’t have to plan to watch the sunset while in Lakshadweep.

f. People-watch in any island

Every time, Sahana and I talk about being away from the crowd, solitude and things. The crowd makes a place charming when it is in the right amount. An overdose of it creates chaos. With less population on the island, residents come out to meet each other in the evening. Small ice-candy carts on cycles reach the shore. This time is the most musical time of Lakshadweep.

woman in burqa sitting under a thatch umbrella on white sands of lakshadweep with her fmaily

The sounds of kids laughingly running with kites, fishers pulling the boats and nets, men walking on the sand adjusting their coloured Lungis and talking, women in Hijab sharing laughter, meows of cats- All are mixed with the sound of mild waves hitting the shore and palm leaves rustling. Everything stops by 7 pm, and the island is super silent by 8 pm!

g. Get off the water and travel on Lakshadweep land.

local lakshadweep men on bike riding through coconut farm

This union territory is all about sea/sand and water, But walking /jeep ride/cycling on the land shows you a glimpse of local life. Not every island has a school of the infirmary. Restaurants and cafes are restricted to certain islands. There are mosques without minarets, with clay-tiled roofs and arches like Malabar style. One thing common everywhere is – coconut trees, white sand and blue water that never goes out of your sight and smiling friendly people.

h. Use the fanciest toilet in the world on a boat.

As an architect, my wife Sahana is obsessed with toilet design. She often says good architecture depends on how the toilet of that particular building works. After travelling together, I also began to observe toilets. Plus, as a person with lots of bowel movements by birth, I seek toilets everywhere. But there is nothing like what I used in the Lakshadweep boat.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by rO_Opii (@ro_opii)

It is shocking to anyone that a boat of that size could accommodate a toilet. The height is so low that you have to enter bent. Fortunately, the boats have septic tanks (I hope they empty them in a designated area without harming the charming Nature). When you do your job inside, your friend can sit on the roof of the toilet! As you open the toilet door, you see turquoise water to infinity. Trust me; this is a bizarre, fun and most unique pooping experience I have ever had in my life.

7. Afterthoughts on Lakshadweep

Apart from the fact that we all loved it and had the best bachelor party for the last stag in our friends’ group- I want to tell you more.

I was watching the series “Crown” recently for the second time. The queen’s mother (actress Victoria Hamilton) says that she is going to stay at a particular place in Scotland. The queen acclaims that it is “an end of the world” spot and asks the mother if she is sure of going. When the queen mother lands in that place where the sea meets mountains, she replies to her host greets, “Finally you made it ” She replies “If it were easy, everyone would have come.”

group of indian tourists on boat with a heap of scuba diving gears in front

That sentence reminded me of Lakshadweep solely. In the name of travelling and tourism, we humans invade every place. I realised why a few true travellers talk about off beaten destinations to spread the travel crowd everywhere instead of overloading a place. Everyone deserves to travel for whatsoever reason.

But making it easy is to boost the economy is the most dangerous step in losing mother earth. Thankfully, getting to Lakshadweep is not as easy as getting to Maldives or Bangkok. So mass tourism hasn’t advanced to Lakshadweep yet. If the strict rules continue, Lakshadweep remains as it is.

India’s PM visit to Lakshadweep

On January 2nd 2024, our PM Modi Ji visited Lakshadweep – There are many reasons for his strategic move and is excellent. Post visit, now most Indians who were flocking to the Maldives are cancelling their trip. And are looking planning their Lakshadweep trip- Great for Indian economy and we all must explore our nation.

But, is Lakshadweep capable of taking that much tourism suddenly?- Yes and no both. Firstly, you will need to obtain a travel permit to enter Lakshadweep even if you are an Indian citizen. So going to Lakshadweep isn’t as easy as going to Andamans or Pondicherry. The local authorities must continue to limit the influx of tourists. Otherwise, Lakshadweep won’t be the same! It will end up another victim of over-tourism.

people of lakshadweep

With the pride and love local Lakshadweep folks have, I am sure they won’t let it happen. And it is high time, tourists travel consciously and treat the places more than “Just a background for Instagram selfie”

We always say, “Save the earth” Nature is so powerful that she takes care of herself when we abuse her just by shaking a little or creating huge waves to get rid of the creatures who are the reason for the abuse.

Thank you for this ,,,,planning to visit in oct last week …..wanted to know if I can visit there for 4days without opting Any package ??

Hi Vijay. Yes, you can. In that case, you must apply for a permit by yourself on their official website. The accommodations are pretty cheap. After checking with your accommodation provider, you can hire boats (that is the only way to travel between tiny islands). Keep an eye on boat time tables

Sajid Shaikh Avatar

That’s a pretty nice and engaging blog, I have read a few since I am planning to visit this place in November. I would be obliged if you can guide me further. What places should I visit for a 4 nights’ stay? Which hotels to book and where to book them? Any other information that you feel is important and not already covered in the blog. I love going places that are not the easiest to reach. This certainly looks like one of them. Thanks. Cheers!

Hello Sajid. I think almost everything is covered! I wish I visited the beautiful ujra mosque.

uday pawar Avatar

Very informative blog indeed. Thanks. U said each adult can carry one alcohol bottle. Did I read it right. How did u guys travel by lakshwadeep by boat or plane.

Hello Uday. I am glad you found it useful. Yes you read it right – I checked with the person who organised the boats there. You can get in touch with them and they will let you know better – https://www.instagram.com/chediyarholidays/ So, it was a flight to and from Kochi to Lakshadweep. Then the rest is only by boat – It is more fun with local fishermen that way!

Modi in Lakshadweep: An essential travel guide to the breathtaking getaway

Looking for an unusual holiday head to lakshadweep that is a haven for adventure lovers and tourists seeking an unforgettable getaway..

Literally, a ‘thousand islands’ in Sanskrit & Malayalam, Lakshadweep is a group of 36 islands located off the coast of Kerala. Androth, Kavaratti, Kalpeni, Ameni and Agathi are believed to be the first few islands to be inhabited. According to local legends, Lakshadweep was first occupied by the people who were on an expedition in search of Cheraman Perumal, a Chera King, who one day slipped out of his capital (present day Kodungallor) and left for Mecca. Today, Lakshadweep is the mecca for adventure lovers and tourists seeking an unusual getaway.

Modi was in Lakshadweep on January 2 and 3 to inaugurate the Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Optical Fiber Connection and lay foundation stone for the renovation of primary healthcare facility and five model Anganwadi centres. He also dedicated several projects to the nation.(Twitter/@narendramodi)

What to see/do:

Lakshadweep beckons with its captivating coral reefs, turquoise waters, and tropical island allure.

• Bangaram: A tiny teardrop shaped island, which lies very close to Agatti and Kavaratti. It is the only uninhabited island resort in Lakshadweep and is known for the phosphorescent plankton that wash ashore on the coral sands during the night imparting a bluish glow to the beach. (Also read: Year-end Travel: Have ₹ 1 lakh? Go to Qatar )

• Agatti: Agatti has one of the most beautiful lagoons & is the only one with an airstrip in Lakshadweep.

• Kadmat: Kadmat is 8 km long and only 550 metres wide at its broadest point. It has a beautiful shallow lagoon on the west which is ideal for water sports.

• Minicoy: It is isolated from the main group of islands and lies about 200 kms south of the northern group. Has one of the largest lagoons and a cluster of 11 villages, which are called “Ava’h” each presided over by an elected village elder called Bodukak.

• Kalpeni: Kalpeni along with two small islets of Tilakkam and Pitti and the uninhabited island of Cheriyam in the north form a single atoll. A peculiar feature of Kalpeni is a huge storm bank of coral debris along its eastern and southeastern shorelines.

• Kavaratti: It is the administrative headquarter and the most developed island. Fifty-two mosques are spread out over the island, the most beautiful being the Ujra mosque.

• Ship wrecks: Minicoy is the only island in Lakshadweep having three large ship wrecks believed to be that of S.S Hoechst and other ships, within 8 metre-depth on the island reef. These wrecks are virtual underwater museums and fish species found here are larger than average normal size found elsewhere perhaps due to consumption of ferrous of the wrecks.

• Water Sports: Most tourist packages offer kayaks, canoes, pedal boats, sail boats, wind surfers, snorkels sets glass-bottomed boats and other facilities. Deep-sea fishing enthusiasts can indulge in big game fishing. Local boats with experienced crew can be hired.

• Diving: Kadmat is one of the most beautiful diving locations in India and is home to the first Laccadives Dive Centre and School. The Laccadives Kadmat Dive School offers beginner to advanced courses throughout the season (October 1 to May 1). Minicoy Dive Centre and Dolphin Dive Centre (Kavaratti) are also a very good dive options.

What to eat:

• Mus Kavaab: A spicy tuna curry made of chilli powder, coriander powder, cardamom with sauteed onions, curry leaves and tomato.

• Octopus fry: Fried octopus

• Maas Podichathu: Made of dried tuna, cut into small pieces and mixed with coconut, turmeric powder, onions and garlic. Served with rice.

The Lakshadweep Islands Tourism Development Authority (LITDA), formed under the Central Tourism Ministry, is set to commence the Mangalore-Lakshadweep tourist liner service after a few trial runs. However, concerns remain about the sea's roughness once the monsoon season begins.

To address this, the LITDA has upgraded facilities at the receiving point in Kadmatt, the nearest port of arrival from the mainland. Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Lakshadweep earlier this year, the island administration has made significant strides in improving connectivity between the mainland at Kochi and Mangaluru.

The initiative is seen as the first step towards facilitating various types of tourism, including eco-tourism in the Western Ghats, educational tourism, health tourism, and recreational tourism on the mainland.
