Lancia Voyager (2012)

Lancia Voyager (2012)

Lancia Voyager

When the Lancia Voyager is used every day, it turns the concept of a simple "means of transport" into an exhilarating travel experience. That is because a "great trip" is not just leaving and arriving, but is instead a continuous string of emotions. A promise that the new model keeps even before getting into it thanks to an exterior style that transmits protection and charm from the very first glance.

Here then is a brand new front end featuring the grille emblazoned with the Lancia logo, wraparound front and rear bumpers, rear light clusters with LED light technology, and large headlights with built-in fog lights in the front bumper. The design is up-to-date and finely wrought. The side view offers the classic wheel arch design, while the slim pillars coupled with large windows guarantee excellent visibility. The car is equipped with rails and crossbars on the roof while the tailgate has been redesigned with a modern, functional look in order to optimise access to the interior.

The benchmark in the segment of large MPVs, the Lancia Voyager is 5.21 metres long, 1.99 m wide, 1.75 m high on a wheelbase of approx. 3.1 metres. This impressive size is matched by a spacious, refined passenger compartment in line with Lancia's best tradition, which is distinguished by attention to details and the use of soft materials of superior quality. And it is precisely when the new model welcomes guests that it is at its best.

Offered standard in the configuration with 7 seats, it is a model for relaxing moments and comfortable journeys, whose passengers will benefit from a firm sense of on-board wellbeing. To achieve this objective, the designers worked according to the most modern ergonomic standards, in order to fulfil the criteria which measure a vehicle's capacity to meet the requirements for comfort and wellbeing. The final results of the Lancia Voyager are excellent in all key ergonomic areas: comfort, driving position, accessibility, visibility and space reconfigurability.

Its welcoming and versatile interior is made attractive by the especially refined, comfortable and snug seats. The front seats are adjustable with electric controls. In addition, the useful "Easy Entry/Exit" function moves the driver's seat into the predefined position, simplifying getting into the vehicle.

Comfort and pleasant wellbeing also abounds for those sitting on the rear seats. They are genuine armchairs complete with headrests that ensure excellent comfort without compromising the driver's visibility. One of the peculiarities of the model is the exclusive Stow 'n Go®, the configuration system offered as standard equipment which frees up all the space needed for rear passengers and their luggage, without having to remove any seats. Not only can the seats be folded, but they can be retracted into the floor panel to transform, with utmost ease, the five comfortable seats of the second and third row into an ample load surface, suitable for all travel requirements. If the seats are kept upright, the practical compartments in the floor panel can be used for storage.

The Lancia Voyager seats are the best expression of MPV functionality combined with the beauty and luxury of a flagship, as also proven by the presence of heaters both in the cushions and in the backrests to offer a sense of on-board wellbeing.

Comfort and versatility: the art of travelling

Lancia Voyager surrounds the driver and passengers with technologies that ensure their highest level of acoustic and climatic comfort. This gave us a padded interior, which is comfortable and vibration-free thanks both to the car's super-efficient sound insulation obtained by using new acoustic panels and silencers throughout the vehicle and the adoption of impressive features such as the automatic triple-zone climate control system, the redesigned suspensions and the tyres designed specifically for maximum comfort and safety. Also the extensive electric roof, the Super Console, the "keyless entry/go" system and the sliding doors and tailgate, all electrically controlled, contribute to the elevated comfort and pleasure of travelling on board the Voyager. Separate mention must be made of the Stow 'n Go® system, which frees up all the space needed for rear passengers and their luggage, without having to remove any seats.

Synonymous with uncompromising choice for the driver and also for those who have the pleasure of experiencing it as a passenger, the Lancia Voyager features Uconnect, a sophisticated hub for information and entertainment that manages four main areas: multimedia system, navigation, phone and Internet connection (available via Mopar®). The most advanced statement of "infotainment" level, the device is a complete package that guarantees connection with the outside world and ensures the finest technologies for the driver's comfort and the passengers' entertainment. All in the spirit of maximum safety because the driver always has his hands on the steering wheel without having to take his eyes off the road.

Finally, Lancia Voyager offers many devices to really make driving comfortable: from the Cruise Control, heated steering wheel and adjustable pedals to the radio controls on the steering wheel, digital compass and electrochrome interior rearview mirror.

Triple-zone automatic climate control system

The climate inside the passenger compartment is one of the principal factors for comfort when travelling and is also important for preventative safety, because comfort, humidity and ventilation all influence the wellbeing of the driver and therefore his/her level of attention. Not forgetting that the heating and ventilation system is also responsible for the defrosting of the windscreen and side windows. This is why the Lancia Voyager is equipped with a triple-zone automatic climate control system, which allows three different temperatures and levels of air distribution to be programmed simultaneously, at the right of the passenger compartment, at the left and in the rear zone.

The system operates by automatically controlling temperature, air capacity, air distribution, the use of the compressor and air recirculation. The vent output positions and speed are automatically adjusted according to input conditions such as exterior temperature, interior temperature, the solar radiation and the coolant temperature. If required, the direction and speed of the air flow can be selected manually and fixed. In addition, the air vent on the floor directs the air flow onto the passengers' feet of the third row, while further air vents for both the middle passengers and those in the third row are present in the head lining.

Suspensions optimised and specific tyres

The Lancia Voyager's suspension system uses a solid framework that is optimised to attain the best result in driving comfort and handling terms. At the front, it is the MacPherson type with crossmember and wishbones optimised for new load conditions; at the rear, there is a torsion beam and anti-roll bar to provide excellent handling performance.

The Lancia Voyager's suspensions have been specially developed for use on European roads, obtaining both exceptional travelling comfort with all types of road surfaces and handling features, such as precision and immediate driving response, of absolute reference.

In detail, the MacPherson struts ensure smooth driving, reactive handling and ultimate noise insulation while the rear axle, with interconnected wheels fitted with coil springs, contributes to improving driving stability and comfort. In addition, the setting up of the springs and shock absorbers envisaged installation of rear shock absorbers with a larger diameter and greater damping and adjustment spring rate control. The height from the ground has also been reduced to give aerodynamic improvement and a more solid and powerful aesthetic form.

On request, suspensions with load distribution and height control - so that the distance from the ground can be adjusted according to the combined passenger and load weight - are available, thus ensuring optimum handling and control values.

The Lancia Voyager is equipped with premium tyres with less rolling resistance that guarantee a better grip and vehicle response. The designers have also researched the handling features for emergency manoeuvres and obtained improvement in cornering performance and better turning and stability precision.

Stow 'n Go®

The innovative system patented by Chrysler is composed of two rows of seats that fold away into the floor and practical storage compartments that can be used when the seats are raised. The seats of the second and third row (which can be split 60/40) can bend, tilt and fold away into the floor with simple gestures without removing the headrests. In this way all the surface necessary for transporting luggage and particularly voluminous objects is obtained, transforming with utmost ease the seat zone into a large load surface. Lastly, if the seats are kept upright, the practical compartments in the floor panel can be used for storage.

This is how the Lancia Voyager Stow 'n Go® system works:

  • move the front seat forwards, lower the headrests and raise the armrests of the second row seats;
  • move the locking mechanism of the container compartment into the locked position and raise the compartment lock in order to open the cover;
  • extract the lowering lever of the backrest on the outer side of the seat and tilt the backrest forwards. Greater pressure on the backrest may be required while it is being lowered to ensure that it is locked in the bent position;
  • pull the release belt on the upper part of the seat backwards and place the seat in the container, then close the cover.

Keyless entry/go system

The Lancia Voyager offers the "keyless entry/go" system, making entering your car and starting the engine simple and convenient. You no longer need to search for your key, put it in the lock, turn it, and once in the driver's seat, put it into the ignition to start the engine. All you need is your remote control key and everything changes. When you approach the car and pull the door handle, the keyless entry/go system's electronic control unit checks whether the key is in the vicinity. When the key is located and the secret code transmitted via radio frequency is confirmed as correct, the door automatically opens. At this point, all you need to do is get behind the wheel and start the engine by pressing the button on the dashboard. Once you reach your destination, the same procedure is carried out in reverse. Switch off the engine by pressing the same button, and once out of the car, push the door handle. For the control unit, this is the signal that you intend to leave the car, so the keyless entry/go system locks the doors.

Super Console

The new Super Console includes two 12 volt current sockets within the driver's reach, ideal for mobile phones and digital audio devices. Occupants of both the first and second rows have access to a glove compartment. The front LED cup holders can contain one-litre bottles, while the rear cup holders can be loaded from the first row and then slid back to the second row. There are two storage compartments covered for greater safety. Thanks to the diffused light system on the upper console that contains four storage compartments and adjustable LED lights, it is like travelling aboard an executive jet. There is also a quadrangular rear view mirror that allows the driver to keep an eye on the other occupants.

Electrically controlled sun roof, sliding doors and tailgate

The Lancia Voyager can be equipped with a glass sun roof that lets you have a different relationship with the surrounding environment every time. When you want the passenger compartment to be filled with light, it is possible to have the glazed part closed and the blind underneath open. If, on the other hand, you prefer driving under open skies, it takes just a few seconds to completely open the glass panel and you can enjoy a real "window to the world". All this happens by simply pressing the button on the roof panel console. The roof also has a safety system that reverses glass movement as soon as an obstacle is detected.

Again with maximum versatility in mind, the new car features electrically operated sliding doors and tailgate with a safety system for the detection of the presence of obstacles during closure (in this case, the doors are opened again to avoid unfortunate accidents).

Uconnect Media Center

The innovative Uconnect Media Center offers a touchscreen and voice commands (the microphone is built into the rear view mirror) for easy control of several multimedia sources and outputs. It is also possible to customise on-board multimedia entertainment through iPod® integration and the auxiliary port for MP3 players. The Media Center also includes a modern Radio/CD/DVD/MP3/WMA system and a 30 GB hard disk where music, photos and voice messages can be stored through a USB interface. In addition to the software and navigation maps, the hard disk can contain up to about 6,700 tracks, depending on the model. And for the more demanding customers, a voice message recorder stores reminder notes with a maximum time of three minutes.

By connecting a digital device with analogue connection (it supports Mini, 4G, Photo, Nano, 5G, iPodT and iPhoneT peripheral devices) to the USB port located in the storage compartment, you can listen to hours and hours of digital music in MP3 and WMA formats. The audio is played by the car stereo system while the information (artist, track title, album, etc.) are displayed on the radio screen. In addition, the audio peripheral device battery recharges when connected to the USB/AUX connector.

Another peculiar feature of the Lancia Voyager is "Uconnect Multimedia", a rear entertainment system with dual LCD screen DVD player for passengers in the middle and back. Specifically, the innovative device enables reproduction of two different media resources at the same time - chosen from many sources (radio, hard disk, AUX input, USB port, two RGB inputs and two DVD players) - on two 9" LCD screens which can be lowered from the roof console complete with remote control and two-channel wireless headphones. In addition, adjustable LED roof lights, inspired by aeronautical design, enable light to be directed only where required. Thanks to the double DVD screen, while one passenger is watching his favourite movie the other can continue to have fun by connecting his video game console.

Finally, now available is "Uconnect GPS": the satellite navigation function with 2D and 3D bird's eye view maps and progressive route guidance.

Uconnect Phone

It is an innovative hands-free communication system with voice activation that guarantees maximum safety and is simple to use. The voice command system and its full integration with the audio system, with controls on the steering wheel and with the information on the instrument display allow customers who have Bluetooth® mobile phones to use it even if it is in a jacket pocket or a handbag, without ever having to take their hands off the steering wheel (up to 7 phones can be paired up). Therefore, by using the voice commands or the buttons on the steering wheel it is possible to call the numbers in the phonebook (up to 1,000 items can be automatically downloaded from the mobile phone) or answer incoming telephone calls using the car audio system as the microphone (the system automatically cuts out the radio volume). Uconnect Phone is available in 6 languages: English, Dutch, French, German, Italian or Spanish.

Engines: power and reliability

Lancia Voyager proposes two Euro5-compliant engines which enhance the dimension of travel, with engineering and performance coming together to deliver comfort beyond compare: the lively 163 HP 2.8L diesel and the powerful 283 HP 3.6 petrol engine. Both engines comply with Euro 5 standards and are combined with a 6-speed automatic gearbox with torque converter that offers closer spacing between the gears, limiting engine speed changes between the different transmission ratios and guaranteeing smoother engagements suited to all driving situations. Compared to the four-speed automatic transmission of the Chrysler Group from which it derives, the six-speed automatic transmission of the Lancia Voyager is equipped with two new main gear ratios and a secondary gear ratio to optimize performance at high speeds. It is also designed to increase the torque power on the initial peak to provide greater acceleration when starting off.

163 HP 2.8L diesel

The Lancia Voyager can be equipped with a 2.8 litre common rail turbodiesel engine delivering 163 HP and a torque of 360 Nm, keeping fuel consumption at 7.9 l/100 km in the combined cycle while CO2 emissions are 207 g/km.

The engine has four valves per cylinder and a double overhead camshaft (DOHC) with belt control. It is equipped with a 1,800 bar common rail injection system, piezoelectric injectors and variable geometry turbocharger.

Other features of the Lancia Voyager 2.8L engine are the new intake manifold made of composite material, a new EGR exhaust gas recirculation system, reduced friction O-rings, electronic turbulence control, oil and exhaust gas temperature sensors, diesel particulate filter (DPF) supplied standard and further adjustments to reduce noise, vibrations and rigidity (NVH) and to guarantee improved driving comfort.

283 HP 3.6L V6 petrol engine

The second engine in the range is the new 3.6L V6 petrol engine with 6 cylinders configured in a 60° V, which delivers 283 HP at 6,600 rpm and a torque of 344 Nm at 4,400 rpm. Thrilling performance puts it at the top of the class, all with fuel consumption at around 10.8 l/100 km in the combined cycle. Worthy of note is its exceptionally flat torque curve with a high specific power from 1,600 to 6,400 rpm, in addition to passing the peak value of 90%. This means concrete excellent driving and reactivity features for the customer.

The Pentastar V-6 engine of the Lancia Voyager boasts a completely restyled design, with double overhead camshaft (DOHC), aluminium exhaust manifolds, piston skirts covered with polymeric materials, forged steel connecting rods and the 60° die-cast aluminium crankcase. Thanks to the combination of the high flow intake and exhaust valves with the phase transformer with independent timing of the two camshafts, it offers optimum volumetric and fuel efficiency in the entire load and rpm interval. What's more, the sophistication of the single components was a key goal since the design phase. This goal has been achieved due to using state-of-the-art techniques in computer-aided design. The structural intake and exhaust zones have been designed in order to reduce the noise levels and to attain specific goals regarding perceptible sound quality by exceeding the expectations of attentive and demanding customers.

Designed complying with environmental criteria, the Pentastar 3.6-litre V6 engine does not require the use of lead during its manufacturing stages and adopts an eco-compatible oil filtering system with recyclable filter and removable elements that do not cause leaks. In addition, an integrated oil radiator contributes to protecting the environment when the filter element is sent to the incinerators. The use of long-life spark plugs and a direct ignition system with high distribution of energy prolong the life of the components, reducing the maintenance costs.

Safety: pampered and protected

In full observance of Lancia's tradition, the new model offers the best available to date in the technological innovation field applied to safety and protection as the more than 40 devices offered as standard show. Some of them are introduced for the first time in the segment. These include: latest generation multistage airbags for front seats, new side airbags fitted on the front seat, side window airbags for three rows of seats, electronic stability control system complete with braking assistance and traction control at all speeds, fog lights, automatic headlights and active pedestrian protection, blind spot detection system, active headrests, windscreen wipers with rain sensors, ParkSense® parking assistance system, and ParkView® rear camera.

The Lancia Voyager boasts excellent braking thanks to the anti-lock disc brakes as standard on the four wheels, besides special structural features that, in the event of accidents, help to keep the passenger compartment intact and to better manage the energy produced: from the crossmember at mid-dashboard to the Dual Phase steel in the internal and external octagonal front bar; from the straight tips of the front bar to the energy absorbing chassis anchoring struts supporting the engine.

Multistage front airbags, side airbags and window bags

The front airbags of the Lancia Voyager are fitted with an advanced latest generation multistage system which supplies an opening adequate for the severity of a crash, which is detected by the ECU that manages the restraint systems and the sensors located at the front of the vehicle. The inflation device for the first stage engages immediately during an impact which requires the activation of the airbag. The timing device for the second stage determines whether the supply force required is low, medium or high. If a low supply is sufficient to meet the needs of the situation, the second stage release is delayed in order to eliminate, in the case of a crash, pyrotechnic material activated by the system.

To protect the passenger's pelvis and chest when the side of the car is struck, the Lancia Voyager is equipped with side bags which are located inside the backrests, ensuring better protection of occupants, regardless of their stature, the position that they assume and the adjustment of the seats. Fitted as standard on all vehicles in the range, window bags are set up to descend along the windows to protect the occupants' heads in the case of a lateral collision. Compared to other solutions, the Lancia Voyager's window bags offer more protection (because they always inflate in the correct position), and are quicker to inflate and less invasive for passengers. They open from the top downwards, with no risk of causing secondary damage to the occupants' arms through their movement. In this way, they efficiently protect both the heads of the front passengers and those seated behind, because they are as wide as the windows. The window bags also ensure that passengers are protected if the vehicle rolls over. The two cushions (one for the right hand side and one for the left) are located under the roof side members, folded into a closed compartment.

Active headrests

The Lancia Voyager's headrests are designed to reduce the risk of injury by limiting the head's movement in the case of shunt. The restraint system ECU determines whether the severity or type of rear impact requires the activation of the rear headrests. If their activation is required, the front half of both active headrests extends forward to reduce the distance to the occupant's neck.

Adaptive front lighting system

The Lancia Voyager's front headlamps are automatic (they switch on and off depending on the environment lighting levels) and have a levelling system that allow them to maintain the most suitable position compared to road surface (regardless of the vehicle load).

Blind Spot Monitor

Another exclusive feature of the new Lancia Voyager is the "Blind Spot Monitor" (BSM). This visual indicator on the door mirror signals entry into the blind spot, namely the dangerous situation of having a car travelling alongside which is not visible in the door mirror. When the indicator is used to signal an intended lane change, a visual and audible alarm alerts the driver to check the position of vehicles around him very carefully before manoeuvring.

Active Pedestrian Protection

The system intervenes in the event of accidental impact raising the rear of the bonnet in order to safeguard the pedestrian safety.

ParkSense® and ParkView®: the parking assistance systems

The Lancia Voyager offers two systems that help in parking manoeuvres: the ParkSense® sensors and the ParkView® camera. When parking, it may be the case that there are obstacles behind the vehicle which are outside of the driver's field of vision, or more simply, the driver may not know how close he/she is to the car parked behind. This is where the ParkSense® parking sensor comes to the rescue. It is activated every time the vehicle is put in reverse and at a speed of less than 16 km/h, and transmits visual and acoustic warnings to the driver on the control panel display. The system is formed by an electronic control unit and four ultrasound sensors in the rear bumper that detect obstacles at a distance between 30 centimetres and 2 metres horizontally, depending on the position, type and orientation of the object.

The Lancia Voyager can then be equipped with ParkView®, a camera placed over the number plate that displays a rear overview of the vehicle. When reverse is engaged, the device transmits the image onto the multimedia radio/navigator display, illustrating the width of the MPV and the distance from the rear objects with a static line grill.

Curbside Classic

Curbside Classic: 2002-10 Lancia Phedra & 2011-15 Lancia Voyager – A European Town & Country And An Actual Town & Country

lancia voyager

By the 21 st century, Lancia had become little more than a semi-premium marque within the Fiat stable. The Italian company that had once been known for its technical innovation – including developing the first V6 and five-speed manual transmission – was now selling cars that were little more than plush Fiats. The Phedra minivan, therefore, seems a fitting analogue to the Chrysler Town & Country, so much so that it was actually replaced by a rebadged Town & Country.

lancia voyager

Fiat had taken over Lancia back in 1969 and quickly worked to share platforms and components between its eponymous division and its newest acquisition. Despite this, Lancias did retain some sense of identity even if they were no more innovative than their Fiat-badged counterparts. The run-of-the-mill Delta begat the wild Integrale, while there were some strikingly-styled executive sedans like the Lybra and Thesis.

Then there was the Zeta, Lancia’s first MPV (minivan). It wasn’t all that unusual to see another rebadged minivan on the market considering Ford, Volkswagen and Seat shared a minivan and Citroen, Peugeot and Fiat had their shared Eurovan. Vincenzo Lancia, however, would probably have been disappointed to see his name used on something so pedestrian. The Lancia was differentiated from the other Eurovans in the same way they were differentiated from each other – minor trim details, a new grille and revised taillights. At least the Zeta was the plushest of the quartet and used only the more powerful engines.

The second generation of Eurovans were fortunately much more distinguished from each other with unique front and rear end treatments. Although they used the same 111-inch wheelbase, they grew in other directions – around 10 inches in length (to 187  inches in the Lancia), an extra inch in width (to 73 inches) and an extra two inches in height (to 69 inches). They were roughly the same length and height as a short-wheelbase Chrysler Voyager albeit almost six inches narrower. More importantly, the new Eurovans were ever so slightly bigger than their Ford/VW rivals.

Again, Lancia’s version – now called Phedra with Lancia’s move away from Greek letters – was the toniest of the quartet and the most overtly luxurious of any European minivan. It avoided the styling excesses of the challenging Thesis but, aesthetically, it fit in well with the rest of the Lancia range; the second-generation Eurovans had all been styled to fit in much more harmoniously with their respective line-ups.

lancia voyager

The Phedra’s interior was resplendent in leather or Alcantara while its suspension tuning was cushy. The Phedra also came well-equipped – satellite navigation, for example, was standard fitment. And like the other Eurovans, the Phedra received a full five stars in Euro NCAP testing thanks to a solid structure and a full complement of side and curtain airbags.

lancia voyager

The Phedra sat five, six or seven occupants in comfort. The front seats could be equipped to swivel while the second and third rows could slide, fold or be removed as desired.

lancia voyager

Unlike the Zeta, the Phedra used the same base engine as the other Eurovans – a 2.0 16-valve four-cylinder producing 134 hp and 140 ft-lbs. Optional were two common-rail turbodiesels, a 2.0 with 109 hp and 199 ft-lbs and a 2.2 with 128 hp and 232 ft-lbs, the latter available only with a six-speed manual transmission; both 2.0s were available with a four-speed auto or five-speed manual. The flagship engine was a 3.0 V6 with 201 hp and 210 ft-lbs, mated exclusively to a four-speed automatic. All engines were PSA designs.

lancia voyager

From 2001 to 2008, 58,000 Fiat Ulysses and 42,000 Phedras were produced. The Phedra was warmly received in its native Italy and less so elsewhere, following the pattern of most modern Lancias.

lancia voyager

Lancia’s position within the Fiat fiefdom had, for some time, resembled the Chrysler brand’s within the Chrysler Corporation. With the formation of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), one rationalization that was made was to effectively merge the Lancia and Chrysler ranges in Europe. In the UK, Ireland and Russia, the Chrysler brand remained and the Lancia Delta and Ypsilon were badged as Chryslers. Everywhere else, the Chrysler brand was nixed in favor of Lancia. This meant the Chrysler 300 became the Lancia Thema, resurrecting an old name, while the Chrysler 200 convertible dusted off an even older and more cherished name, Flavia. Finally, the Chrysler Grand Voyager – as the Town & Country was known – became the Lancia Voyager in 2011.

lancia voyager

The renaming coincided with the Town & Country’s refresh. There was a thoroughly overhauled interior with higher-quality materials, at least in left-hand-drive markets (RHD markets soldiered on with the old interior). The old 3.8 V6 offered in Europe was replaced with the new Pentastar 3.6 V6, producing 279 hp and 254 ft-lbs. All Voyagers came standard with power-folding mirrors and power sliding doors and tailgate, as well as leather seats that were heated in the first two rows. Though there would be no Alcantara trim, the Voyager had a long equipment list befitting a Lancia. And, in a marked contrast to past Voyagers that had performed poorly in crash tests, the Voyager achieved a four-star crash rating with Euro NCAP.

lancia voyager

The 3.6 Voyager was destined to be a niche model in diesel-hungry Europe. Much more important to the Chrysler’s Lancia’s success was the carryover 2.8 CRD diesel four-cylinder sourced from VM Motori. The diesel narrowly pipped the much larger V6 in torque (266 ft-lbs vs. 254 ft-lbs), although it produced only 161 hp. Unlike the Phedra, there was no manual transmission available – all Voyagers had a six-speed automatic.

lancia voyager

The lack of a manual transmission or a petrol four-cylinder didn’t really hinder the Voyager on the continent, at least compared to the Phedra. It sold about as well as the Phedra had throughout Europe, around 4-6,000 units annually. Alas, this was well below the numbers the Chrysler Voyager had been posting throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. That’s likely due to the absence of a short-wheelbase version, Chrysler having ditched it for the fifth-generation minivan. Immediately after the introduction of the LWB-only fifth-generation model, sales plummeted from 20-40,000 annual units to under 10,000.

lancia voyager

Though the Voyager was sized similarly to US-market minivans like the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna, it positively dwarfed European minivans like the defunct Eurovans. A Phedra measured 187 inches long, 73.3 inches wide, and had a 111.1-inch wheelbase. A Voyager, conversely, measured 202.5 inches long, 76.9 inches wide, and had a 121.2-inch wheelbase. On the wide streets and mall parking lots of Dallas and Dubuque, it fit perfectly. On the narrower streets of Naples and Nuremberg, that extra size became a liability. Even though reviews were quite complimentary of the Voyager’s manoeuvrability and handling, sales targets of 11,000 annual units were never met. The best the Voyager could muster each year was half that.

lancia voyager

The Voyager was no Lancia but the Phedra had been only marginally more of one, anyway. But this rebadged Chrysler was the least of Lancia’s concerns. FCA management, including CEO Sergio Marchionne, were increasingly blasé about Lancia’s future. Sales had skidded alarmingly in a short space of time – after remaining steady around 110-120,000 annual sales for almost a decade, they dived to 71,223 in 2013. After just a few years of the Lancia-Chrysler experiment, FCA threw in the towel. The Thema, Flavia and Voyager were all axed by 2015, the Chrysler brand withdrawn from the UK and Ireland and the Lancia brand relegated to a single model (the Ypsilon) sold only in Italy.

lancia voyager

Perhaps the question isn’t which was more of Lancia but, rather, which was the better premium minivan? Was it the big American with more stretch-out room than everything else on the market, or was it the smaller, PSA-engined van swathed in Alcantara? Neither seemed to be logical heirs to the famous Fulvia and Flavia but if Lancia’s role was to serve as an upscale counterpart to Fiat, it needed an MPV that was fit for the job. Just like Chrysler.

I’m actually in Italy right now, and yes, there is a surprising amount of these Lancia Voyagers. I also saw a couple of examples of the Chrysler Grand Voyager, which was pre-Fiat.

In general, there is a fair number of older Chryslers here. Some I’ve seen include the WK1 Grand Cherokee, PT Cruiser, Caliber, and Liberty.

The biggest surprise, though, was a current-generation Chevrolet Impala that edged past me on a narrow Roman street.

avatar

Chrysler was quite successful in Europe for several decades. They were a pioneer in the minivan segment, and the swb vans sold very well, and were built in Austria, as was the Jeep GC. The fact that they were built there, and to higher standards, helped them considerably, as well as having diesel engines.

The other models rode on their coat tails.

Chrysler was by far the most successful of the Big Three in Europe from the 90s until recently. But the ever-increased competition from European brands and the lack of a swb van has really dinged them. Of course they’re making it up with the various Jeep models.

When I was in Austria in 1999, the number of Chrysler minivans was an aye-opener. Each time I’ve been back since, the numbers have decreased.

avatar

So – the thing that killed Chrysler minivans in Europe was elimination of the SWB version, which was the doing of – Daimler? How ironic.

Only in part. What really killed it is much more competition form the European brands and the decline of the minivan market. The Chrysler minivan was of course the pioneer of the segment in Europe (along with the Renault Espace) as it was in the US. That gave it a huge boost, hence the production in Austria. But the competition obviously wasn’t going to just stand by, hence all the brands soon developed their own van, like these in this post. And all the European vans were a notch smaller, about the length of the swb Chrysler, but with a bit less width. That turned out to be a better package for Europe, so the Chrysler was almost destined to lose market share, as its width was always something of a compromise in Europe.

Which probbaly explains why Chrysler dropped the swb version with the major redo for 2008; by that time the European sales of the swb version were already in decline. DC saw the writing on the wall. I would have made the same decision.

Why? Because of the meteoric rise of CUVs, which have largely destroyed the minivan market both in Europe and the US. It’s a drastically smaller market now in Europe; without looking it up, it may well have shrunk even more than in the US.

European families are also getting smaller (and fewer) and the options are much greater. What really hurt the established minivans (and the Chrysler version) was the growth in passenger versions of the little cargo vans, like the Transit Connect. These simpler, more basic vans are cheaper, and appeal to those young families that want that kind of room. FCA has the Fiat Doblo (Promaster City) in that class.

avatar

Even though the SWB minivan was killed off, at the same time they started selling the Journey with a tax-friendly VW 2.0 TDI on it, and it sold quite a bit. I still see them occasionally

It is interesting how stubbornly the two size classes have remained. Narrow body cars do not do well in the US and wide body cars do not do well in many European and Asian markets.

It will be interesting to watch how developing or potentially large markets in places like China and India go – wide or narrow? How those two places go might affect what is available in the coming decades.

Follow the money. That will determine what size gets produced. After such a long time being produced, it seems that there has been no adoption of a “standard’ size, so why keep trying to make one? It seems that simply deciding to go back to the ideas used before “globalization” was the buzz-word, and producing items in the market where they are sold rather than importing/exporting would make more sense. Localization, as it were. Components can always be built anywhere and shipped to where needed, such as engines, transmissions, etc. but the actual models would probably be better designed and built based on where they sell. Narrow, smaller cars in places that buy them, and wider, larger cars where they sell. Import the niche models where needed, but build the “bread and butter” ones locally.

Your observation applies essentially only to vans. Yes, the Europeans generally prefer more space efficient vans/MPVs, for obvious reasons, as they are popular with young families and they just don’t like such a large van.

But in other classes, I don’t see it. The CUVs are largely global now. There are so many classes of CUVs, and we pretty much have them all here now too. The Buick Encore (Opel Mokka) is a a good example, as it’s quite narrow but sells well here. There’s others too. The Japanese CUVs sell well on all continents, especially the Nissans.

And the bigger SUVs like the Mercedes and BMWs and Audisand Jeeps sell well on both continents.

And of course the German premium brands have been selling a full range of sedans on all the continents for many decades.

I’d say it’s limited to just a few body styles, mainly the vans. In Europe, they’re still actual minivans; in the US they’re now full size vans.

I’ve gotta say, I really like how those big wheels (I’m guessing 20s) look on that street parked Lancia Voyager. Gives a ho-hum minivan a little bit of presence, in my eyes.

@MagnumSRT8Brian: I logged in to say the same thing. I would loooove to rock a Lancia Voyager here in the States, it would mess with so many people’s minds.

But that van has some serious presence.

The only expensive things would be the wheels and the steering wheel airbag, otherwise it’s perfectly possible to just get a T&C and do it, would look great

avatar

That Phedra interior is awfully nice! Comparing it to the Voyager’s interior, on the other hand, is depressing. To answer your final question, my vote would go to the Phedra for the better European premium minivan… in North America, where big cars are more practical, I might not make that choice, but in Europe, the Phedra would win hands-down.

avatar

+1 on the Phedra’s interior. It looks like I imagines a Lancia should look.

I often find the badge engineering that goes on between European makes passenger and commercial vans a bit amusing. I really wanted a Renault, but I’m getting a Fiat, whether I like it or not…

Imagine if we did this in the States? Maybe I could get a new Chevy Venture, disguised as a Dodge Grand Caravan…

avatar

Well, for awhile there you could get a Nissan commercial van disguised as a Chevy, and a Dodge Grand Caravan disguised as a Volkswagen.

But nothing like the platform sharing that goes on across the pond, that’s for sure.

Don’t forget the Mercury Villager & Nissan Quest! These vans are awfully thin on the road now too!

lancia voyager

Go to my old neighbourhood in Manhattan. Even just last year, you were guaranteed to see one on every block.

Voyager–it’s the Lancia of minivans!

Well : just in Brazil your beloved Dodge Journey is rebadged Fiat Freemont for regular market .

In Europe it is too, and with a Diesel!

New Thema: the best of both worlds

New Thema: the best of both worlds

Today the new Thema and the best Voyager ever are making their debuts. These are the first two models emerging from the alliance between Lancia and Chrysler, which by now have become a single identity founded on the same will to excel in the future and on the values engraved in their respective century-old histories: design and innovation. Therefore, this is a significant moment in the history of two brands that have written some of the most important pages in international automotive history. This is why a place full of charm was chosen to present the two cars to the international media: Piazza Carignano in Turin, where the monumental Palazzo Carignano stands. It is the seat of the first Italian parliament and symbol of the Italian unification born 150 years ago. The adventure of a new automotive dynasty embodying the best of two industrial cultures today is starting off from the same temple of Italian unification. The exuberant style, flair for delivering a "stress-free experience and functionality all associated with the Chrysler brand are coupled with the Italian taste, innovation and technological efficiency and attention to the tiniest details that have always distinguished Lancia. Today as always, the same desire to offer a true alternative in the respective market segments is at the heart of the two new models. With a heritage of values in its DNA, Lancia appears to be favoured over other brands for its ability to interpret this new world of exclusiveness and to meet the needs of a customer more attentive to technology, who demands not only a substantial product, but also a distinctive and unique style. Besides, whoever chooses a Lancia vehicle starts a new trend because he follows only his own personality. The new Thema and Voyager, statements of a concrete value Lancia is introducing to the market for the first time, have been created for this customer. This value is not meant as innovation into itself, but as technology "at the service" of driver and passengers, offered at an accessible price and above all free from excess and what is superfluous. This is how Lancia is winning back the turf of exclusivity that has always belonged to it. This affirmation is backed by a century-old history peppered with innovation and records. One of the widest ranges on the international scene stands proof to it. It starts with segment B (new Ypsilon), continues with the mid-sized segment (new Delta and Musa), and is completed with the flagship (new Thema), the Large MPVs (new Voyager) and, soon to come, the alluring segment D convertibles (new Flavia Cabrio). The new Thema and Voyager are therefore the first concrete example of how it is possible to join two worlds so geographically distant yet so close in their essence. This perfect alchemy expertly combines the American exterior shape embellished with interiors clearly marked by Italian taste; powerful engines according to the best American tradition "abated" by European eco-friendly efficiency; typically American large dimensions combined with Italian expertise in compact cars; "stars and stripes" comfort and versatility enhanced by exceptional European handling. In short, Granturismo returns on the roads of the world. It is a term that means travelling at the wheel of a powerful, comfortable, elegant, and never exaggerated car. Like a Lancia. A style that does not like to show off, but prefers discretion. Mechanics designed to excel in performance, safety and driving pleasure. A cutting-edge technology that does not flaunt, but that gives the maximum of on-board wellbeing to ensure the best travelling possible. And so the new Lancia Thema, the first global flagship that brings together the best of two worlds by combining the expertise and functionality distinctive of the Chrysler brand with the luxury of Poltrona Frau® leather interiors, the cocooning silence of the large Lancias and the attention to detail that express the best of Italian design. Five metres long, 1.5 metres high, 1.9 metres wide and with a wheelbase of 3 metres, the Thema was designed based on the new Chrysler 300, in turn created on the Chrysler Group LX rear wheel drive platform, and like its predecessor in 1984, it is ready to take on the toughest and most prestigious segment, striving to offer a genuine alternative. To achieve this objective, in addition to a style brimming with a strong personality, the new car offers a passenger compartment that is a true best-in-class living room in terms of level of quiet, embellished with quality materials that make it warm and exclusive, far from the cold and rational surfaces of other cars of its segment. Corresponding to elegance of character is the largest wealth of features ever offered in the safety field. In fact, there are more than 70 systems installed on the new Lancia flagship, including the Adaptive Speed Control (ACC) that adjusts the speed and automatically brakes to maintain the safety distance and the "Blind Spot Detection" that signals entry of a vehicle into the blind spot. Contributing to making the Thema the new paradigm of the segment are also the sun roof, the largest in its market segment, and the U-Connect system with 8.4" touchscreen, the largest of its category. Designed to supply power and efficiency in town traffic and during long journeys, the Lancia flagship offers two different 6-cylinder engine versions, both with automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive: the powerful Pentastar V6 3.6 litre petrol engine delivering 286 HP, combined with an innovative 8-speed ZF automatic gearbox, and a latest generation V6 3.0 litre turbo diesel engine in two power levels (190 HP and 239 HP). So if the Thema marks a new chapter in the legendary history of the large Lancia saloons, the new Voyager is the evolution of a Chrysler invention born in 1984 that radically changed motoring language by adding a new word and creating a new world: MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle). Since then 27 years have elapsed, more than 13 million units have been sold in 120 countries around the world and thousands of experiences, solutions and ideas have been accumulated that lie behind the renowned expertise of Chrysler in this market segment. Today, thanks to the alliance between the two brands, the American model "meets" Italian style to blend into a new automotive form that unites Chrysler's expertise for travelling with Lancia's for driving pleasure, on-board wellbeing, quiet in the passenger compartment and Italian design. The result is the best Voyager ever, a top-of-the-range MPV that takes up the baton from the Lancia Phedra to write another page in the history of this category. The benchmark in the segment of large MPVs, the new Voyager boasts generous dimensions. It is 5.21 metres long, 1.99 m wide, 1.75 m high and has a wheelbase of approximately 3.1 metres. - These features are matched by a passenger compartment that is the largest and most versatile in its class. It can comfortably accommodate up to 7 people and, thanks to the Stow ‘n Go® system patented by Chrysler, frees up all the space needed for rear passengers and their luggage, without having to remove any seats. With these records the Lancia Voyager adds the secrets of Italian hospitality. It is in fact a car that welcomes its guests with good taste, warmth and generosity. Proof of that is found both in the outstanding level of quiet achieved and in the precious Nappa interiors, from the elegant Nappa leather upholstery to the workmanship level of care found in the smallest details. Furthermore, the special suspension system ensures excellent travelling comfort combined with a dynamic behaviour always ready and accurate. The new Voyager boasts an elegant, convivial and protective atmosphere in which you always feel at ease like at home. This sensation is also confirmed by the sophisticated entertainment system for the rear passengers that, thanks to two 9" LCD screens with remote control and wireless headphones, can enjoy a movie, listen to a music CD or have fun with their favourite videogames. Lancia Voyager is the new MPV that turns the concept of a simple "means of transport" into a rich travel experience. That is because a "great trip" is not just leaving and arriving, but is instead a continuous string of emotions. Just to further enhance your travelling experience, the new Lancia MPV offers the lively 163 HP Diesel 2.8L and the powerful 283 HP 3.6 litre engines.

Maykop is named after the Maykop culture of the early Bronze Age, and this was after the discovery of a royal burial site in 1897. In 1857, the Russian military Fort was built in the area where the city is located. Oil deposits and natural gas were discovered near the City of Maykop in 1911, and in 1936 Maykop, together with the surrounding area, were merged to create the autonomous oblast of Adyghe and effectively becoming the administrative center for the autonomous region. In 1942, the city of Maykop was occupied by the unified army of Nazi Germany (Wehrmacht) without any resistance because of the operation of Germany ’s Brandenburger commandos. However, in January 1943 the city was liberated by the Red Army. The city has been the capital of Adygea republic in the Russian Federation since 1991.
