FA Cup final: Manchester United's road to Wembley

LiveScore logo

Manchester United are through to the FA Cup final where they will face their bitter rivals Manchester City.

Erik ten Hag's team are looking to land their second piece of silverware at Wembley, having already won the Carabao Cup earlier this season.

They also have the extra motivation of being able to prevent City from winning a possible Treble — an achievement the Red Devils famously managed in 1999.

Ahead of Saturday's FA Cup final, we take a look at United's route to Wembley.

Third round — Manchester United 3-1 Everton

United's journey to the famous arch began with a home match against Premier League opposition in the form of Everton.

The hosts took the lead after just four minutes when Marcus Rashford's pace gave him the space to deliver a cross that Antony converted. Ten minutes later, Conor Coady equalised for the Blues

Another dangerous cross from Rashford in the second half saw Coady put the ball in his own net. The England forward completed the scoring from the penalty spot in added time.

player

Fourth round — Manchester United 3-1 Reading

Reading ended up being relegated from the Championship but they made life tough for United at Old Trafford.

The scoring was not opened until early in the second half when Antony released Casemiro, who dinked the ball home. Four minutes later the midfielder scored a second with a deflected long-range effort.

Things got worse for Reading when Andy Carroll was sent off and Fred quickly scored a third. Though the Royals pulled one back through Amadou Mbengue, United were through comfortably in the end.

player

Fifth round — Manchester United 3-1 West Ham

The last 16 saw the Red Devils back up against Premier League opposition as West Ham visited Old Trafford.

For the first time in this FA Cup run, United found themselves behind after Said Benrahma smashed home to give the Hammers the lead early in the second-half.

With 13 minutes remaining, a corner was headed into his own net by West Ham's Nayed Aguerd to trigger a comeback. Alejandro Garnacho put United ahead in stoppage time with a brilliant curled finish before Fred sealed victory.

player

Quarter-finals — Manchester United 3-1 Fulham

The quarter-finals saw another home game against a Premier League side and another 3-1 victory in which the opposition took a second-half lead.

Fulham looked like they could pull off a shock when Aleksandar Mitrovic put them ahead but he would be sent off later in the half for rowing with the ref after Willian received a red card for handling on the line.

Bruno Fernandes converted the resulting penalty to make it even with 15 minutes left. Marcel Sabitzer flicked home to put the hosts ahead soon later and Fernandes completed the scoring with his second.

player

Semi-finals — Manchester United 0-0 Brighton (7-6 on penalties)

The semi-finals at Wembley saw United play away from home for the first time in this FA Cup run as they met Roberto De Zerbi's high-flying Brighton.

It was the Seagulls who had the better of the 90 minutes and extra-time and David de Gea kept his side in the game with saves from Alexis Mac Allister and Julio Enciso.

The clash went to penalties with the first six from both teams being converted. Eventually, Brighton's Solly March skied an effort over and Victor Lindelof took the opportunity to set up a first Manchester derby in the FA Cup final.

Manchester United celebrate Rachel Williams’ goal in the FA Cup final.

Manchester United banish Wembley demons thanks to newfound nous

Defeat to Chelsea in last year’s FA Cup final stood Marc Skinner’s side in good stead to win their first major trophy

I n the words of Julius Caesar, “experience is the teacher of all things”. As Marc Skinner and his Manchester United team made the long climb to the royal box at Wembley, they will have known how important the lessons of heartbreak last time out were in enabling them to lift the Women’s FA Cup for the first time in their history.

With a dominant performance in a comfortable 4-0 victory over Tottenham, the demons of that defeat by Chelsea were firmly put to bed. On that occasion, United were outdone by the guile and nous of more seasoned winners. Against Robert Vilahamn’s fledgling side this time around, Skinner’s side were determined to put on an accomplished display that illustrated why many considered them favourites.

United are full of players with the knowledge and abilities to shine on the most important of stages. From back to front – Mary Earps to Rachel Williams – Skinner trusted in those who have been most tested at this level.

For Earps and Ella Toone, Wembley is their second home, where both have experienced so much success for England in recent years. The latter certainly has an affinity for scoring on this pitch. Many will remember her goal against Germany that helped the Lionesses lift their first major trophy , while she also got on the scoresheet in the Finalissima victory in 2023 .

The 24-year-old has struggled for form at times this season but has had the firm support of her manager throughout. Skinner knows exactly how crucial Toone is to making United tick and her undeniable ability in front of goal. His faith in his midfielder paid off as her spectacular opener deep into first-half stoppage time changed the direction of a finely balanced encounter. That awareness – developed from countless such moments – to arrive in the right place at the right time swung the momentum in United’s favour.

Manchester United Women celebrate FA Cup win and first major trophy – video

In Williams, who doubled the score early in the second half, United possess experience in abundance. Her ability to find the back of the net has been crucial to much of United’s success over the past couple of seasons. The 36-year-old could have written the book on succeeding on this stage.

In 2012, she played a crucial role in Birmingham City’s FA Cup final victory over Chelsea, scoring a stoppage-time equaliser to send the tie to extra time. She may not start all that often under Skinner, but her manager understands how little fazes Williams at this stage of her career and has relied on her more and more over the course of a difficult season.

Williams may be familiar to many of the opposition in the Women’s Super League but her ability to frighten the life out of defenders is unwavering.

The timing of her runs, her vision to see the play two steps ahead of everyone else, and her seemingly telepathic propensity to nodding the ball into the back of the net are all key to her success.

after newsletter promotion

In a fairly uneventful first half, Williams was a constant thorn in the side of Tottenham’s centre-backs. The veteran will have been frustrated that she missed two early gilt-edged chances, rising high, time after time, to meet Katie Zelem’s deliveries into the box. She was not going to miss a third and when the Spurs defence let her run in unhindered at the far post once again, she made them pay.

Mary Earps and Ella Toone celebrate victory with their Manchester United teammates

Lucía García was the other shining star of United’s triumphant afternoon. The Spanish forward has had to be patient under Skinner and that has paid off in recent months. The 25-year-old was another runner-up with this team last year but looked at home this time around with her indefatigable running, high energy levels and strong technical abilities. Her double came as Tottenham started to look weary: firstly alert to a huge distribution error from Becky Spencer before reacting quickest to a second ball.

Spurs, in contrast, were naive and struggled to match the intensity of their opponents. The occasion clearly got to Vilahamn’s side as a normally creative team struggled to fashion any opportunities of note. The captain, Bethany England, came closest when she crashed a header off the crossbar in the second half, but by that time the game had passed them by. It was, of course, Tottenham’s first time at Wembley and their first appearance in a major cup final and they will hope that this experience serves them as well as it did their opponents last year.

For United, success has finally arrived. After a troubled season, Skinner and his players return to Manchester in celebratory fashion. Winning a first piece of silverware is always hard. Having broken that duck, they will look to build the foundations for more success.

At a sold-out Wembley Stadium, Manchester United ended a disappointing season by winning their first trophy just six years after their foundation as a professional team.

A stunning goal from Ella Toone in first-half stoppage team gave Manchester United the lead in a game they dominated. Toone - who has made a name for herself scoring at Wembley for England in the final of the UEFA Women's Euro and Finalissima - did it again on the big occasion.

Picking the ball up in the center circle, she cut right before unleashing a stunning curling shot into the top corner of Becky Spencer's net. The club's record goalscorer, it was Toone's 53rd goal for Manchester United Women's team.

Nine minutes into the second half, Rachel Williams, whose goal in the semi-final brought Manchester United to Wembley for the second season in succession, scored with another trademark back-post header to double her team's lead. When Lucía García pounced on a mis-placed Spencer pass three minutes later to score an easy third, the contest was over.

Playing in their first-ever Women's FA Cup final, Tottenham Hotspur did their best to respond. Midway through the second half, their most expensive player, Beth England hit the crossbar with a header from a left-wing cross. However, 15 minutes from the end, García pounced again in the penalty area to make it 4-0. It was the biggest winning margin in the Women's FA Cup final since Arsenal defeated Leeds United 5-0 in 2006.

Their victory today means that Manchester United became the first new winner of the Women's FA Cup - first played in 1971 - since their neighbors Manchester City in 2017. In that final, the defeated finalists were Birmingham City, managed by Marc Skinner. Now the manager of Manchester United, Skinner was on the losing side at Wembley again last season against Chelsea. The 41-year-old has however made it third time lucky in the competition.

Skinner's three-year contract as head coach at the club expires next month. After two seasons which have seen his side rise from fourth to second in the league, in the process qualifying for the Champions League for the first-time ever, this season has seemingly seen the club take a backward step.

Manchester United went out of the Champions League before the lucrative group stage, losing to eventual semi-finalists Paris Saint-Germain in the qualifying round. More damagingly, a record six defeats in the Women's Super League, including last week to Liverpool, have seen United slump to their worst-ever position of fifth with just one game to play.

Albeit hampered by significant injuries to key players, Skinner has been criticised for his failure to integrate new signings and a lack of flexibility in his team selection. Arguably, Manchester United's best player this season has been Grace Clinton, one sent out on loan by Skinner to today's FA Cup final opponents Tottenham Hotspur. Luckily for Skinner, the terms of the deal meant Clinton was ineligible to play against her parent club.

There has been a gathering storm of unrest among the club's ardent fans about Skinner's tactics and player-managament skills. During the 3-1 defeat away to Chelsea in January, a Manchester United supporter held up a banner calling for Skinner to be replaced.

In some ways, Skinner's position has parallels with the pressure the ultimately legendary Manchester United men's manager Sir Alex Ferguson found himself facing 35 years ago after failing to win a trophy going into his third full season at the club. Then, one supporter famously held up a banner saying "3 Years of Excuses and it's Still Crap. . . Tara Fergie".

Ferguson ended that season by winning the FA Cup, ushering in a 23-year hegemony of unparalleled dominance over the English game winning 38 trophies. Skinner can only hope that his side can now utilize the full strength of the club's brand and heritage to assert their authority in the women's game.

Speaking to me after the game, Skinner told me he doesn't believe winning the FA Cup is vindication for his methods. "It doesn't matter, it doesn't matter. I'm not that type of person. I don't care about who tells me I can't do something, if anything you're my fuel."

"I want to lead this team into a successful era, of course I do. Who knows? Maybe that will happen. For now, I’ve delivered what I said I would deliver to the fans, which is a trophy. This is hopefully the first of many but if that doesn't happen, then it doesn't matter. For me, it's about the moment."

A new winner of the Women's FA Cup also ended a decade of dominance in the English game by three teams. Since Liverpool won the Women's Super League title in October 2014, Arsenal (6), Chelsea (15) and Manchester City (8) had between them won every one of the 29 domestic trophies on offer in that ten-year period.

For the second successive year, the Women's FA Cup final, sold out the 90,000 National Stadium at Wembley. After a record attendance of 77,390 for last year's final, 76,082 were recorded as going through the turnstiles on a glorious, sun-drenched afternoon in the English capital.

Women's FA Cup final LIVE! Manchester United vs Tottenham result, match stream and latest updates today

Women's FA Cup final LIVE!

Manchester United lifted the Women's FA Cup for the first time in their history following a comfortable 4-0 victory over Tottenham at Wembley. Ella Toone, who started when United were narrowly beaten by Chelsea in the final a year ago, broke the deadlock with a fine finish in first-half stoppage time.

Rachel Williams, appearing in her fourth FA Cup final, nodded home nine minutes after the restart before an error by Spurs keeper Becky Spencer gifted Lucia Garcia her first goal three minutes later. Captain Bethany England came closest for Tottenham in their maiden FA Cup final with a crossbar-clipping header before Garcia bagged her brace and put the comeback firmly out of reach.

It is the first time since Birmingham's victory in 2012 - where Williams netted a crucial stoppage-time equaliser for the winners - that the cup hasn't been won by one of Arsenal, Chelsea or Manchester City.

FT: Man United 4-0 Tottenham

Man United win the FA Cup for the first time!

A brilliant performance, with Ella Toone setting them on their way before Rachel Williams doubled the lead and Lucia Garcia then netted a brace.

Painful afternoon for Spurs.

Man United 4-0 Tottenham

90+3 mins: Earps hasn’t made a single save this afternoon. Nice afternoon in the sun.

Three minutes until the party can well and truly begin for those in red.

90 mins: Garcia named player of the match. Big hug from Toone, who must have thought she was on track for it after that stunning opener.

Six minutes added on. Just what Spurs wanted.

87 mins: Well, Spencer isn’t lacking in confidence.

Gifted United a goal earlier but she’s holding her nerve, just about poking the ball away as she’s closed down again.

84 mins: United keeping the ball well, all very easy for them right now.

That Toone goal right before half-time hurt Spurs a lot- they were right in the game before that.

81 mins: Some very hopeful appeals for a Spurs penalty, as England does down at the back post.

Even she didn’t believe that.

Dom Smith at Wembley

Huge cheers for Toone and Garcia as they make way. Deservedly so. Both have been excellent.

77 mins: Spurs look ragged at the back now. Would be no surprise if there are more goals in this.

Garcia brought off for United, and she’s going to milk every second of her lap around the pitch. Toone off too, with the job done.

GOAL! Man United 4-0 Tottenham | Lucía Garcia 74'

That’ll do it!

Two for Garcia, four for United and it’s turning into a rout.

Ball drops for her in the box, and it’s a really good finish as she stretches forward.

Man United 3-0 Tottenham

73 mins: Nearly 4-0... should be 4-0.

Ball straight through the Spurs defence and Malard is clean through for United.

Not a great effort in the end, near enough straight at Spencer. Spurs goalkeeper keeps it out.
