A Guide on Medical Tourism in Kazakhstan in 2024

Costs, JCI-certified centers, waiting times, and entry requirements — essential information for medical tourists planning a trip to Kazakhstan

By Nursultan Zhanaidarov

Collage by QazMonitor

Kazakhstan is developing its potential as a destination for medical tourism. Visa-free regimes with 80+ countries, reasonable accommodation costs, and a diverse range of medical services can potentially make Kazakhstan even more popular among foreign visitors.

Considering the quality of services, Kazakhstan currently has 10 medical centers certified by Joint Commission International, says Askar Yessekeyev, Medical Director of the Kazakhstan Association of Medical Tourism (KAMT).

QazMonitor sat down with the expert to make a comprehensive guide for medical tourism in Kazakhstan. Find out in the guide below everything you need on estimated costs of certain procedures, quality and certification of the medical centers, waiting time, registration process, and entry requirements.

The cost of medical procedures in Kazakhstan

Freepik/DCStudio

According to KAMT, in Kazakhstan, medical services are offered at competitive rates compared to some neighboring countries, presenting substantial savings for patients seeking various treatments.

For example, services in neurosurgery, including brain tumor removal with a Gamma Knife, are competitively priced at approximately $4,120. Procedures such as Aorto coronary bypass surgery are priced at around $4,800. The price does not include hospital stay, meal service, and diagnostic tests.

According to KAMT, the approximate costs of some popular medical services are as follows:

Hip replacement surgery costs approximately $5,555. The price includes a prosthetic implant, a 12–13 day hospital stay, meal service, and diagnostic tests.

Dentistry services, including implants with artificial teeth, are notably affordable, averaging $1,000 to $1,200 per entire procedure. The price includes the cost of an implant and crown.

In vitro fertilization procedures range from $4,000 to $5,000.

Hair transplantation is also accessible, with prices averaging at $0.55 per graft.

Check-up programs cater to a range of budgets, with costs varying from $300 to $2,000 depending on the examination profile.

What medical centers in Kazakhstan are JCI-recognized?

Freepik

Joint Commission International, US (JCI) certificate for medical organizations is a common standard, defining objective recognition of the quality and safety of services for patients. As of 2023, over 1,000 organizations in 71 countries are accredited by JCI. Its mission is implemented in Israel, South Korea, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and China.

JCI focuses on patient care and safety. It evaluates approaches to solving problems and meeting the requirements of international healthcare standards. The members are required to pass the examination and renew their accreditation every 3 years.

In 2024, 10 medical organizations in Kazakhstan have passed international accreditation by JCI.

National Research Cardiac Surgery Center (Astana)

National Center for Neurosurgery (Astana)

Republican Diagnostic Center (Astana)

National Children’s Rehabilitation Center (Astana)

National Scientific Center of Motherhood and Childhood (Astana)

Umit International Oncological Center of TomoTherapy (Astana)

The Hospital of the Medical Center of President's Affairs Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan (Astana)

The Central Clinical Hospital (Almaty)

Research Institute of Cardiology and Internal Medicine (Almaty)

Research Clinical Center of Cardiac Surgery and Transplantology (Taraz)

These medical centers have specialized departments that focus on assisting inbound international patients.

Average waiting time for medical services

Freepik

KAMT expert shares that waiting times for medical procedures in the Republic of Kazakhstan are typically short for medical tourists. The process for international patients begins online, where they provide necessary medical documents and receive consultation. Within a few days, doctors review the information, provide their recommendations, and schedule the operation, minimizing waiting times for patients.

Visa and entry requirements

Freepik

Visitors from over 80 countries can enjoy visa-free entry to Kazakhstan, making it possible to access medical services in the country. With simplified visa-free entry, tourists can stay and travel within Kazakhstan for up to 30 days without the hassle of obtaining a visa. For travelers from countries not included in the visa-free list, it's important to check the visa requirements before planning the trip.

Popular medical services in Kazakhstan

Freepik/senivpetro

Medical organizations in Kazakhstan offer a range of services, but the most prevalent in demand among international medical tourists are as follows:

Cardio surgery

Cardiac surgery in the Republic of Kazakhstan has made significant strides in scientific and technological advancements. The leading institution in this field is the National Research Cardiac Surgery Center directed by Yuri Pya. Since its establishment, the center has introduced 21 innovative medical technologies.

On November 7, 2011, the center's doctors successfully implanted Kazakhstan's first left ventricular assist device (HeartMate II).

On December 13, 2011, the center performed a groundbreaking procedure by implanting the latest generation HeartWare Ventricular Assist Device (VAD), making Kazakhstan one of only 22 countries globally conducting such advanced open heart surgeries.

On August 8, 2012, the center achieved another milestone by performing the country's first-ever donor heart transplant on a patient with chronic heart failure.

Neurosurgery

The primary institution leading in the field of neurosurgery is the National Center for Neurosurgery, headed by Serik Akshulakov. This scientific center specializes in performing numerous intricate procedures on the brain, spinal cord, and associated vessels.

One of the notable advancements is the utilization of a Gamma Knife. In June 2021, the center introduced a Gamma Knife complex manufactured by the Swedish company Elekta. This milestone makes Kazakhstan the third country in the CIS and the first in Central Asia to possess such advanced equipment.

Dentistry in Kazakhstan has long been utilizing equipment from industry leaders such as Sirona, Ajax, Fengdan, and Genoray, alongside high-quality supplies sourced from Europe, Israel, and Korea. A wide range of services includes the following:

Implantation of artificial teeth with aesthetic crown components

Veneers for smile enhancement

Orthodontic treatments including braces

Prosthodontics and aligners for restoring dental function and aesthetics

Oral and maxillofacial surgery for complex dental issues

Children's dental care is a priority and in high demand, emphasizing the importance of early oral health interventions.

Joint replacement

Large joint endoprosthetics is an intricate medical procedure, which involves replacing joints with artificial ones. The primary hub for this in Kazakhstan is the Scientific Center of Traumatology and Orthopedics, named after Academician N.D. Batpenov. This center, located in Astana, is a renowned medical facility pioneering endoprosthetics. Patients receive comprehensive care, including surgical and conservative treatments, as well as rehabilitation services.

Utilizing implants from reputable global brands, the center adheres to the highest standards of surgical interventions, akin to those practiced in leading German clinics. This commitment to excellence ensures patients receive top-quality care and optimal outcomes for their joint replacement surgeries.

In vitro fertilization

As a regional reproductive medicine frontrunner in Central Asia, Kazakh clinics encompass a range of advanced procedures, including thorough preliminary examinations, laboratory analyses, and genetic tests. The expertise extends to comprehensive treatment options for both male and female infertility, as well as precise endocrinological corrections.

Hair transplantation

Hair graft transplantation clinics in Kazakhstan find an effective solution for scalp alopecia and various cosmetic concerns. In addition to addressing hair loss on the scalp, this procedure extends to enhancing facial features such as eyebrows, beard, and mustache. Patients can choose between various transplantation methods that utilize advanced mechanical devices, ensuring patients have a range of options tailored to their needs.

Aesthetic medicine

In the Republic of Kazakhstan, aesthetic medicine has seen significant growth offering a comprehensive range of procedures catering to diverse cosmetic needs. Individuals have access to a wide array of options for enhancing their appearance including:

Mammoplasty: Breast surgery

Blepharoplasty: Eyelid surgery

Rhinoplasty: Nose surgery

Brachioplasty: Arm lift surgery

Gluteoplasty: Buttocks augmentation surgery

Cruroplasty: Thigh contouring surgery

Platysmoplasty: Neck tightening surgery

Epicanthoplasty: Eye widening surgery

Otoplasty: Ear surgery

Cheiloplasty: Lip surgery

These services are delivered by five private clinics across the country.

All major clinics in the Republic of Kazakhstan provide checkup programs. They typically include a range of tests and screenings tailored to various age groups and health needs, ensuring thorough and personalized care. Additionally, these checkup programs help in early detection of potential health issues.

Recommendations.

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include

  • Chickenpox (Varicella)
  • Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis
  • Flu (influenza)
  • Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR)

Immunization schedules

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

COVID-19 vaccine

Hepatitis A

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Kazakhstan.

Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series.

Travelers allergic to a vaccine component or who are younger than 6 months should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Unvaccinated travelers who are over 40 years old, immunocompromised, or have chronic medical conditions planning to depart to a risk area in less than 2 weeks should get the initial dose of vaccine and at the same appointment receive immune globulin.

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

All international travelers should be fully vaccinated against measles with the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, including an early dose for infants 6–11 months, according to  CDC’s measles vaccination recommendations for international travel .

Measles (Rubeola) - CDC Yellow Book

Rabid dogs are commonly found in Kazakhstan. If you are bitten or scratched by a dog or other mammal while in Kazakhstan, there may be limited or no rabies treatment available.

Consider rabies vaccination before your trip if your activities mean you will be around dogs or wildlife.

Travelers more likely to encounter rabid animals include

  • Campers, adventure travelers, or cave explorers (spelunkers)
  • Veterinarians, animal handlers, field biologists, or laboratory workers handling animal specimens
  • Visitors to rural areas

Since children are more likely to be bitten or scratched by a dog or other animals, consider rabies vaccination for children traveling to Kazakhstan.

Rabies - CDC Yellow Book

Tick-borne Encephalitis

For travelers moving or traveling to TBE-endemic areas

TBE vaccine is recommended for persons who will have extensive exposure to ticks based on their planned outdoor activities and itinerary.

TBE vaccine may be considered for persons who might engage in outdoor activities in areas ticks are likely to be found.

Tick-borne Encephalitis - CDC Yellow Book

  • Avoid rodents and areas where they live
  • Avoid sick people

Tuberculosis (TB)

  • Breathe in TB bacteria that is in the air from an infected and contagious person coughing, speaking, or singing.

Learn actions you can take to stay healthy and safe on your trip. Vaccines cannot protect you from many diseases in Kazakhstan, so your behaviors are important.

Eat and drink safely

Food and water standards around the world vary based on the destination. Standards may also differ within a country and risk may change depending on activity type (e.g., hiking versus business trip). You can learn more about safe food and drink choices when traveling by accessing the resources below.

  • Choose Safe Food and Drinks When Traveling
  • Water Treatment Options When Hiking, Camping or Traveling
  • Global Water, Sanitation and Hygiene | Healthy Water
  • Avoid Contaminated Water During Travel

You can also visit the Department of State Country Information Pages for additional information about food and water safety.

Prevent bug bites

Bugs (like mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas) can spread a number of diseases in Kazakhstan. Many of these diseases cannot be prevented with a vaccine or medicine. You can reduce your risk by taking steps to prevent bug bites.

What can I do to prevent bug bites?

  • Cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats.
  • Use an appropriate insect repellent (see below).
  • Use permethrin-treated clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents). Do not use permethrin directly on skin.
  • Stay and sleep in air-conditioned or screened rooms.
  • Use a bed net if the area where you are sleeping is exposed to the outdoors.

What type of insect repellent should I use?

  • FOR PROTECTION AGAINST TICKS AND MOSQUITOES: Use a repellent that contains 20% or more DEET for protection that lasts up to several hours.
  • Picaridin (also known as KBR 3023, Bayrepel, and icaridin)
  • Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or para-menthane-diol (PMD)
  • 2-undecanone
  • Always use insect repellent as directed.

What should I do if I am bitten by bugs?

  • Avoid scratching bug bites, and apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to reduce the itching.
  • Check your entire body for ticks after outdoor activity. Be sure to remove ticks properly.

What can I do to avoid bed bugs?

Although bed bugs do not carry disease, they are an annoyance. See our information page about avoiding bug bites for some easy tips to avoid them. For more information on bed bugs, see Bed Bugs .

For more detailed information on avoiding bug bites, see Avoid Bug Bites .

Stay safe outdoors

If your travel plans in Kazakhstan include outdoor activities, take these steps to stay safe and healthy during your trip.

  • Stay alert to changing weather conditions and adjust your plans if conditions become unsafe.
  • Prepare for activities by wearing the right clothes and packing protective items, such as bug spray, sunscreen, and a basic first aid kit.
  • Consider learning basic first aid and CPR before travel. Bring a travel health kit with items appropriate for your activities.
  • If you are outside for many hours in heat, eat salty snacks and drink water to stay hydrated and replace salt lost through sweating.
  • Protect yourself from UV radiation : use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, wear protective clothing, and seek shade during the hottest time of day (10 a.m.–4 p.m.).
  • Be especially careful during summer months and at high elevation. Because sunlight reflects off snow, sand, and water, sun exposure may be increased during activities like skiing, swimming, and sailing.
  • Very cold temperatures can be dangerous. Dress in layers and cover heads, hands, and feet properly if you are visiting a cold location.

Stay safe around water

  • Swim only in designated swimming areas. Obey lifeguards and warning flags on beaches.
  • Practice safe boating—follow all boating safety laws, do not drink alcohol if driving a boat, and always wear a life jacket.
  • Do not dive into shallow water.
  • Do not swim in freshwater in developing areas or where sanitation is poor.
  • Avoid swallowing water when swimming. Untreated water can carry germs that make you sick.
  • To prevent infections, wear shoes on beaches where there may be animal waste.

Keep away from animals

Most animals avoid people, but they may attack if they feel threatened, are protecting their young or territory, or if they are injured or ill. Animal bites and scratches can lead to serious diseases such as rabies.

Follow these tips to protect yourself:

  • Do not touch or feed any animals you do not know.
  • Do not allow animals to lick open wounds, and do not get animal saliva in your eyes or mouth.
  • Avoid rodents and their urine and feces.
  • Traveling pets should be supervised closely and not allowed to come in contact with local animals.
  • If you wake in a room with a bat, seek medical care immediately. Bat bites may be hard to see.

All animals can pose a threat, but be extra careful around dogs, bats, monkeys, sea animals such as jellyfish, and snakes. If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, immediately:

  • Wash the wound with soap and clean water.
  • Go to a doctor right away.
  • Tell your doctor about your injury when you get back to the United States.

Consider buying medical evacuation insurance. Rabies is a deadly disease that must be treated quickly, and treatment may not be available in some countries.

Reduce your exposure to germs

Follow these tips to avoid getting sick or spreading illness to others while traveling:

  • Wash your hands often, especially before eating.
  • If soap and water aren’t available, clean hands with hand sanitizer (containing at least 60% alcohol).
  • Don’t touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. If you need to touch your face, make sure your hands are clean.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
  • Try to avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • If you are sick, stay home or in your hotel room, unless you need medical care.

Avoid sharing body fluids

Diseases can be spread through body fluids, such as saliva, blood, vomit, and semen.

Protect yourself:

  • Use latex condoms correctly.
  • Do not inject drugs.
  • Limit alcohol consumption. People take more risks when intoxicated.
  • Do not share needles or any devices that can break the skin. That includes needles for tattoos, piercings, and acupuncture.
  • If you receive medical or dental care, make sure the equipment is disinfected or sanitized.

Know how to get medical care while traveling

Plan for how you will get health care during your trip, should the need arise:

  • Carry a list of local doctors and hospitals at your destination.
  • Review your health insurance plan to determine what medical services it would cover during your trip. Consider purchasing travel health and medical evacuation insurance.
  • Carry a card that identifies, in the local language, your blood type, chronic conditions or serious allergies, and the generic names of any medications you take.
  • Some prescription drugs may be illegal in other countries. Call Kazakhstan’s embassy to verify that all of your prescription(s) are legal to bring with you.
  • Bring all the medicines (including over-the-counter medicines) you think you might need during your trip, including extra in case of travel delays. Ask your doctor to help you get prescriptions filled early if you need to.

Many foreign hospitals and clinics are accredited by the Joint Commission International. A list of accredited facilities is available at their website ( www.jointcommissioninternational.org ).

In some countries, medicine (prescription and over-the-counter) may be substandard or counterfeit. Bring the medicines you will need from the United States to avoid having to buy them at your destination.

Select safe transportation

Motor vehicle crashes are the #1 killer of healthy US citizens in foreign countries.

In many places cars, buses, large trucks, rickshaws, bikes, people on foot, and even animals share the same lanes of traffic, increasing the risk for crashes.

Be smart when you are traveling on foot.

  • Use sidewalks and marked crosswalks.
  • Pay attention to the traffic around you, especially in crowded areas.
  • Remember, people on foot do not always have the right of way in other countries.

Riding/Driving

Choose a safe vehicle.

  • Choose official taxis or public transportation, such as trains and buses.
  • Ride only in cars that have seatbelts.
  • Avoid overcrowded, overloaded, top-heavy buses and minivans.
  • Avoid riding on motorcycles or motorbikes, especially motorbike taxis. (Many crashes are caused by inexperienced motorbike drivers.)
  • Choose newer vehicles—they may have more safety features, such as airbags, and be more reliable.
  • Choose larger vehicles, which may provide more protection in crashes.

Think about the driver.

  • Do not drive after drinking alcohol or ride with someone who has been drinking.
  • Consider hiring a licensed, trained driver familiar with the area.
  • Arrange payment before departing.

Follow basic safety tips.

  • Wear a seatbelt at all times.
  • Sit in the back seat of cars and taxis.
  • When on motorbikes or bicycles, always wear a helmet. (Bring a helmet from home, if needed.)
  • Avoid driving at night; street lighting in certain parts of Kazakhstan may be poor.
  • Do not use a cell phone or text while driving (illegal in many countries).
  • Travel during daylight hours only, especially in rural areas.
  • If you choose to drive a vehicle in Kazakhstan, learn the local traffic laws and have the proper paperwork.
  • Get any driving permits and insurance you may need. Get an International Driving Permit (IDP). Carry the IDP and a US-issued driver's license at all times.
  • Check with your auto insurance policy's international coverage, and get more coverage if needed. Make sure you have liability insurance.
  • Avoid using local, unscheduled aircraft.
  • If possible, fly on larger planes (more than 30 seats); larger airplanes are more likely to have regular safety inspections.
  • Try to schedule flights during daylight hours and in good weather.

Medical Evacuation Insurance

If you are seriously injured, emergency care may not be available or may not meet US standards. Trauma care centers are uncommon outside urban areas. Having medical evacuation insurance can be helpful for these reasons.

Helpful Resources

Road Safety Overseas (Information from the US Department of State): Includes tips on driving in other countries, International Driving Permits, auto insurance, and other resources.

The Association for International Road Travel has country-specific Road Travel Reports available for most countries for a minimal fee.

Maintain personal security

Use the same common sense traveling overseas that you would at home, and always stay alert and aware of your surroundings.

Before you leave

  • Research your destination(s), including local laws, customs, and culture.
  • Monitor travel advisories and alerts and read travel tips from the US Department of State.
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) .
  • Leave a copy of your itinerary, contact information, credit cards, and passport with someone at home.
  • Pack as light as possible, and leave at home any item you could not replace.

While at your destination(s)

  • Carry contact information for the nearest US embassy or consulate .
  • Carry a photocopy of your passport and entry stamp; leave the actual passport securely in your hotel.
  • Follow all local laws and social customs.
  • Do not wear expensive clothing or jewelry.
  • Always keep hotel doors locked, and store valuables in secure areas.
  • If possible, choose hotel rooms between the 2nd and 6th floors.

Healthy Travel Packing List

Use the Healthy Travel Packing List for Kazakhstan for a list of health-related items to consider packing for your trip. Talk to your doctor about which items are most important for you.

Why does CDC recommend packing these health-related items?

It’s best to be prepared to prevent and treat common illnesses and injuries. Some supplies and medicines may be difficult to find at your destination, may have different names, or may have different ingredients than what you normally use.

If you are not feeling well after your trip, you may need to see a doctor. If you need help finding a travel medicine specialist, see Find a Clinic . Be sure to tell your doctor about your travel, including where you went and what you did on your trip. Also tell your doctor if you were bitten or scratched by an animal while traveling.

For more information on what to do if you are sick after your trip, see Getting Sick after Travel .

ASTANA – Medical tourists from 45 countries come to Kazakhstan annually, reported Deputy General Director of the National Centre for Health Development Aiman Iskakova.

medical travel.kz

Ninety percent of them are citizens of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), mainly from Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Uzbekistan while other visitors come from China, Iran and Turkey. Overall, 1,604 foreign patients were registered in the first 10 months of 2018.

“We have highly-qualified specialists. We have advanced medical equipment and favourable geographical location. Most importantly, our medical services are provided at lower prices. International experts conducted an analysis of seven surgical services. It shows that prices in our country are lower than in India, which is recognised as the world leader in terms of costs for medical services,” said Iskakova.

Kazakhstan takes the 25th place in terms of the number of organisations accredited at the Joint Commission International (JCI) ranking. JCI provides leadership in international healthcare accreditation and quality improvement. Currently, seven local organisations have a JCI accreditation. Also, about 500 medical organisations have national accreditation certificates, recognised by International Society for Quality in Healthcare since 2012.

Tourists most often seek care related to cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, reproductive medicine, dental services, transplantology, orthopaedics and health procedures.

“We offer not only high-quality services. We have many unique facilities for recreation, tourism and sports. More than 140 organisations offer health services based on the integrated use of unique natural sources. This sector of medical tourism includes climate therapy, hydrotherapy, mud therapy and pantotherapy,” she said.

The development of medical tourism and other programmes seeks to increase the capacity of healthcare organisations and services to attract foreign patients. The centre expects the project to attract about 32,000 foreign tourists and bring more than 1 billion tenge (US$2.6 million) from inbound medical tourism.

The centre studied the experience in medical tourism development in five countries including India, Turkey, South Korea, Thailand and Malaysia. The development strategy will adopt the best practices in methodology of statistical accounting, internet marketing, insurance and other aspects.

The centre will cooperate with tour operators, national and international associations to identify and overcome barriers in medical tourism. To date, 16 memorandums have been signed with domestic and foreign travel companies.

The medicaltourism.kz website provides information about medical services in the country. It offers information about medical organisations, their equipment, services offered and prices, as well as specialists and their qualifications. A call centre is also planned.

“The National Centre for Health Development joined the Global Healthcare Travel Council (GHTC) last year. Its members are representatives of national health councils, associations and national organisations that regulate the tourism industry and support the medical tourism. GHTC provides guidance for the global medical tourism market, sets norms, standards and ethics, provides recommendations on adjustments to the international legal framework for medical tourism and supports the countries in monitoring and evaluating new trends in medical tourism,” Iskakova explained.

Kazakhstani medical tourism: navigating the market and attracting patients.

medical travel.kz

The burgeoning medical tourism market presents a wealth of opportunities for healthcare providers around the world. As this industry grows, it’s crucial to understand and adapt to the unique needs and preferences of different target markets. One such promising market is Kazakhstan. In this article, we delve into the nuances of the Kazakhstani medical tourism market and offer insights into effectively catering to the distinct cultural and patient expectations.

Kazakhstan: A Market with Enormous Potential

Kazakhstan, the world’s largest landlocked country, possesses a rich cultural heritage and is experiencing rapid modernization. With a rising middle class and growing awareness about healthcare, many Kazakhstanis are looking abroad for specialized medical treatments and procedures. The demand for quality healthcare, coupled with Kazakhstan's geographical proximity to major medical tourism destinations, makes it a market ripe with opportunity.

Moreover, as the government in Kazakhstan is actively promoting health reforms, there is a growing desire for higher-quality medical services, which contributes to an increased interest in medical tourism.

Understanding Cultural Specifics and Patient Expectations

To effectively attract patients from Kazakhstan, healthcare providers must understand and respect their cultural norms and expectations. Being predominantly Muslim, it is important to accommodate Islamic dietary requirements, provide gender-segregated wards, and ensure privacy. Additionally, language can be a barrier, so having Russian and Kazakh-speaking staff or interpreters can greatly enhance communication and provide a comforting experience to the patients.

It's also imperative to understand that Kazakhstanis highly value interpersonal relationships. Building trust through transparent communication and showing genuine concern for their well-being is essential.

Embracing the Power of Global Healthcare Accreditation

As a healthcare provider looking to enter the Kazakhstani market, it is recommended to collaborate with Global Healthcare Accreditation (GHA) . GHA can help in ensuring that your facility meets the highest international standards, which is of prime importance to Kazakhstanis.

GHA assists hospitals through training, accreditation, and Gap Analysis, ensuring that your facility is culturally competent and adept at managing patients from different backgrounds, including Kazakhstan. Having a GHA accreditation builds trust with healthcare consumers as it signifies adherence to international standards and a commitment to delivering quality care.

Patients and healthcare consumers from Kazakhstan are encouraged to opt for GHA-accredited healthcare providers due to their proven cultural competency and their ability to deliver a positive patient experience.

Marketing Strategies and Partnerships

Creating tailor-made packages that encompass not just the medical procedure but also aspects such as accommodation, local transport, and cultural experiences could be highly appealing to patients traveling from Kazakhstan. Digital marketing strategies should be employed, focusing on the Kazakhstan market through targeted ads and social media engagement. Collaboration with local facilitators and healthcare organizations in Kazakhstan can also be beneficial.

Medical Tourism Association and Global Healthcare Resources

To further enhance your reach and effectiveness in attracting patients from Kazakhstan, it is wise to engage with Medical Tourism Association and Global Healthcare Resources . The Medical Tourism Association has successfully launched initiatives in various regions including Korea, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Washington DC, Florida, Miami, Las Vegas, Colombia, Costa Rica, and more.

Global Healthcare Resources, on the other hand, offers extensive expertise in market penetration for both B2C medical tourist referrals and B2B referrals. With a massive network and audience of consumers and buyers globally, it stands as an invaluable resource for healthcare providers aiming to make a mark in the Kazakhstani market.

In Conclusion

Successfully tapping into the Kazakhstani medical tourism market requires a multifaceted approach that includes cultural competency, international accreditations, effective marketing strategies, and forming alliances with reputable organizations. As the healthcare demands in Kazakhstan evolve, there is a substantial market opportunity for medical tourism providers. By ensuring a culturally sensitive and high-quality patient experience, healthcare providers can not only meet the expectations of Kazakhstani patients but also build long-lasting relationships and reputation in this growing market.

The key to unlocking this potential lies in embracing the cultural diversity, understanding the market intricacies, and aligning services with the patients’ values and expectations. The role of accreditation, as offered by Global Healthcare Accreditation, becomes instrumental in assuring the patients about the standard of care they can expect, which is a crucial determinant in their decision-making process.

Harnessing the collective expertise of the Medical Tourism Association and Global Healthcare Resources can provide the required impetus and direction to penetrate this market effectively.

Kazakhstan is on the brink of a healthcare transformation, and for the discerning healthcare provider, this is the moment to make a mark and establish a presence in this emerging and lucrative medical tourism market.

Medical tourism - growing sector in Kazakhstan

Tengrinews file photo

The Ministry of Health and Social Development of Kazakhstan says that medical tourism in the country is on the rise, Tengrinews reports. Director of the medical aid management department of the Ministry of Health and Social Development of Kazakhstan Gulnar Kulkayeva said that the number of countries from which patients come to be treated in Kazakhstan had increased significantly over the past several years.

According to Kulkayeva, the most popular services among foreigners, who visited Kazakhstan in 2013, were microsurgical removal of spinal disc herniation, in vitro fertilization, cardiac surgery on the valves of the heart and uterine artery embolization.

She said that the primary work on the development of medical tourism in Kazakhstan was done by subsidiaries of National Medical Holding JSC , where specialized medical care and tertiary care were administered.

"The clinics of the holding started treating patients from the United States, Japan, Italy, whereas previously there were only patients from Russia and Kyrgyzstan. In 2013, the services were rendered to 832 foreign nationals, including those working on the territory of Kazakhstan and those coming from across the post soviet space," Kulkayeva said.

According to the Health Ministry, a majority of medical tourists come from the United Kingdom - 260. The United States is in the second place with 111 patients. 51 medical tourists arrived from Kyrgyzstan and 50 from Turkey.

Additionally, there were 44 patients from Russia, 35 from Bulgaria, 23 from Sri-Lanka and 27 from the Philippines. In total, citizens from 31 countries obtained medical services in Kazakhstan.

"The most frequent pathologies encountered among our foreign patients are metabolic syndrome and type II diabetes," Kulkayeva explained.

The Ministry of Health said that the cost of operations in Kazakhstan was much lower than abroad. In particular, bone marrow transplantation in Kazakhstan cost $51,000. The same operation is done for $90,000 in Russia. A surgery on kidney transplantation cost $16,000 in Kazakhstan and $40,000 in Russia. Liver transplantation in Kazakhstan was five times cheaper than in Turkey, about $20,000. Reporting by Alisher Akhmetova, writing by Dinara Urazova

Healthcare in Kazakhstan

medical travel.kz

Expats should note that the quality of healthcare in Kazakhstan is highly variable, especially in the public sector. Although the government has been attempting to improve the service level, the quality of public healthcare has fallen dramatically since the end of the Soviet era. The public healthcare sector is chronically underfunded, and bribery and corruption have become rife among underpaid medical professionals.

For this reason, most expats avoid public healthcare services, and instead invest in comprehensive private health insurance, which provides access to Kazakhstan's private hospitals and doctors.

Expats may notice that the bedside manner of Kazakhstani doctors is quite different from that of Western doctors. While they may come off as unsympathetic or impatient, especially when facing time constraints and a language barrier, this is quite common and shouldn't be taken as a personal slight.

Public healthcare in Kazakhstan

Public hospitals are easy to find in Kazakhstan, as around 70 percent of the country's hospitals are owned by the government.

Although expats who are legal residents in Kazakhstan are entitled to use the public healthcare system, it's difficult to predict the quality of treatment. While some expats report receiving adequate to good care, others have noted that the standard of treatment is low with a constant shortage of medication and equipment.

English-speaking medical professionals are relatively rare in the public healthcare sector, and expats making use of public healthcare should either be proficient in a local language or come with a fluent speaker who can act as a translator.

Private healthcare in Kazakhstan

Although private hospitals offer better treatment than public hospitals, expats may still face some challenges. While English-speaking doctors are more prevalent in the private healthcare sector, they can still be somewhat hard to find, especially in smaller towns and rural areas. Insurance companies should be able to recommend English-speaking doctors if there are any available in the area.

Private healthcare in Kazakhstan will still most likely not measure up to the standards that many expats may be used to, but they are a definite step up from the country's public services. For major operations or serious medical emergencies, expats are usually advised to utilise medical evacuation services to a nearby country for improved standards of care.

Health insurance in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan implemented a law in 2020 requiring mandatory monthly public health insurance contributions from both employer and employee. This is expected to improve the standard of public healthcare. Regardless, expats may wish to purchase additional coverage to access the private sector and its associated benefits.

Pharmacies in Kazakhstan

Pharmacies are prevalent in Kazakhstan's larger cities, but expats should be aware that options may be limited. Over-the-counter medications common in other countries may not be readily available in Kazakhstan, so it's best for expats to bring their own from home.

Kazakhstani pharmacists may not be able to answer questions in English about medication or other health matters, so it is best to get full details from one's doctor on how to take the prescribed medication.

Health hazards in Kazakhstan

While Kazakhstan's main health concerns are non-communicable illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and respiratory illnesses, cases of HIV and tuberculosis are prevalent, so expats should take appropriate precautions to avoid becoming infected.

Pre-travel vaccinations in Kazakhstan

Expats should ensure that routine vaccinations are up to date before travelling to Kazakhstan. Expats should also get vaccinations for typhoid and hepatitis A, as there is a slight risk of contraction through contaminated food or water.

Emergency services in Kazakhstan

In a medical emergency, expats can dial 103 for an ambulance, though operators are not likely to speak English and ambulance arrival times can be slow. For this reason, it may be preferable to drive to the hospital or take a taxi instead.

When we first arrived, Nimmer had to get a full physical check-up before she could join the kindergarten. We saw a whole host of doctors, who were all efficient and professional. Later, when Nimmer was under the weather, a lovely doctor paid us a home visit, which was also very affordable. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Your particular lifestyle, the medical tourism destination, and the type of medical tourism procedure you will be undergoing will dictate, to a large degree, how much money you will be spending. In general, the farther away your medical tourism destination the more you will pay for airfare. So, for example, expect to pay more if you are flying from Dallas to Bangkok, Thailand, than you would for a flight to Monterey, Mexico. At the same time, you also need to take into account that some medical tourism destinations are more expensive than others. So even if a particular country is cheaper to travel to, you will need to factor in the relative cost of “living,” in comparison to another medical tourism destination.

What about your lifestyle preferences? Do you plan to stay at a five-star hotel or are you comfortable “roughing” it at a local bed and breakfast? Some adventurous souls prefer to immerse themselves in the local culture and will literally live on a shoestring budget. Most everyone else though will tend to fall somewhere between the Holiday Inn and Club Med. The type of medical tourism procedure or medical tourism treatment you are undergoing will also play a large part in your decision of where to stay and what you will do. A medical tourism patient undergoing open heart surgery or a knee replacement will require extra care and very comfortable conditions after leaving the hospital. Not the case for someone coming for a dental bridge or an eyelid lift. Wherever you decide to stay, make sure it serves your needs as a medical tourism patient.

Many of the expenses of a medical tourism trip will be the same as those of a “normal” trip or vacation. At the very minimum you will need to budget for airfare, hotel accommodations, transportation requirements and meals. Sightseeing tours and souvenirs are also a real possibility, particularly if you are traveling with a companion.

Although there are many benefits associated with medical tourism, there are also certain risks that must be weighed before making a final decision to travel abroad.

Varying standards and Medical Tourism

Varying standards with regards to hospitals and physicians can be a problem if you are searching for options within multiple countries with dozens of hospitals. Each country will have its own licensing and certification protocols which may vary significantly from your own country. As you have no way of actually visiting the hospital or meeting the physician prior to your trip, you will have to do research to make sure hospitals are accredited and surgeons are licensed. MedicalTourism.com offers a wealth of information and tools that will make this job much easier.

Travel after surgery

Traveling long distances after surgery also poses certain risks such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism. DVT may be defined as a blood clot that forms in a vein deep in the body. If the blood clot breaks off and travels through the blood stream to the lungs, a pulmonary embolism may occur which is potentially fatal. Using simple preventive measures, however, medical tourism patients can reduce the chance of blood clotting and increase their likelihood of surgical success.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends:

• Getting up and walking around every 2 to 3 hours.

• Exercise your legs while you’re sitting

• Drink plenty of water, and avoid drinking anything with alcohol or caffeine in it.

Additionally, medical compression stockings and anti-clotting medications such as Warfarin and Heparin, may be prescribed by physicians for high risk medical tourism patients.

Minimal legal recourse in case something goes wrong

It is important to remember that if you do have a serious complication, other countries' malpractice and liability recourses may be different from those in your own country. Also keep in mind that some hospitals may require a medical tourism patient to sign a legal waiver stating that if they do file a lawsuit over the surgery, the lawsuit must be adjudicated in the country where the medical procedure was performed.

Coordinating appropriate aftercare once you come home

This is one the biggest concerns for medical tourism patients considering traveling abroad for surgery. What happens if I have a complication once I return home? Who will I turn to? Will my doctor even see me? These are valid questions that must be addressed by the hospital you are seeking care at.

Make sure to inform your primary physician that you will be going overseas and try to get him or her involved in the process. You may also want to try and schedule a call between your primary physician and your international doctor to discuss your case.  This is wise not only at a medical level (you want your international physician to know as much as possible about your case history), but also has the potential to establish trust between both parties, making your physician empathetic toward your situation and wanting to be an active participant in the success of your procedure.

Presently, and in order to minimize potential complications, many international hospitals and physicians do maintain close contact with their medical tourism patients once they have returned home. Therefore, you should not feel shy about contacting them if you feel something is wrong. At the very least your overseas physician can offer recommendations about what medications to take, who to see, or possibly even explain details of your condition to another doctor.

In medical tourism, a Familiarization Tour or Fam Trip is a trip organized by a public or private entity seeking to showcase the healthcare and tourism assets in a certain region, country or city, in order to attract new business (usually in the form of patients). Fam trips are often organized by the tourism board, medical tourism cluster, or by a Destination Management Organization (DMO) representing a destination. Participants in the Fam trip are typically buyers of medical tourism services such as foreign governments, insurance companies, employers and medical tourism facilitators. They are vetted in advance and usually have all their travel, accommodation and maintenance fees covered during the trip.

Sometimes referred to as medical tourism agencies, or a medical travel facilitator, these are companies that, as their name suggests, act as facilitators or intermediaries for patients seeking treatments in other countries or regions.

Medical Tourism Facilitators have played an important role in promoting the growth of medical tourism, and for many medical tourism patients, represent their first face to face contact with the concept of medical tourism.

Over the last 10-15 years, thousands of these companies have popped up, most sporting names synonymous with health and travel. They function much like a travel agency, requesting and obtaining passports, booking flights, and arranging a medical tourism patient’s lodging, transportation and tours. The key difference, of course, is that they also serve as the liaison or mediator between you and the international hospital and doctor. In effect, it is the facilitator’s job to repackage the medical provider’s service offering, make it more appealing, and then guide you along the medical tourism process.

Is travel insurance worth it?

April 30, 2024 | 2 min read

Planning a trip and wondering if you need a travel insurance policy? Keep reading to learn more about travel insurance to decide whether it’s right for you.

Key takeaways

  • Travel insurance can provide financial protection if things go wrong before or during a trip.
  • You might get travel insurance to cover potential losses from trip cancellations or delays, lost baggage or medical issues.
  • Factoring in details specific to your trip and balancing with existing coverage might help you decide whether travel insurance is right for you.

What does travel insurance do?

Travel insurance is a type of specialized protection that might help protect against financial losses from airline delays, medical issues or other unexpected occurrences. Some travel insurance plans focus on specific things, like lost baggage or health care. Others offer a wide range of benefits under a single plan. It’s a good idea to make sure you understand the terms and conditions, because coverage varies.

When might travel insurance be beneficial?

Some of the situations where it can help to have travel insurance include:

Interruptions and cancellations

Trip delay insurance covers food and lodging expenses if you experience an airline delay. Trip cancellation insurance can reimburse your prepaid costs if an illness forces you to cancel entirely.

Baggage issues

Baggage loss coverage can reimburse you if your luggage is lost, stolen, damaged or delayed.

Medical emergencies

Travel health or medical insurance can cover everything from medication to emergency medical evacuation if you become sick or injured when traveling abroad .

When might travel insurance be unnecessary?

There’s no right or wrong time for travel insurance. It depends on your circumstances. But when deciding whether travel insurance is worth it, you can consider things like:

  • Type and length of trip: If the trip’s refundable, you might not need extra protection. And a short or cheap trip might not be worth the cost of coverage.
  • Your existing coverage: Check existing policies and agreements. If you have coverage through your health insurance provider, credit card issuer or card network, you may not need more.

Considering travel insurance in a nutshell

Travel insurance can offer peace of mind if anything goes wrong before or during a trip. But it may not always be worth it. If you’re considering travel insurance coverage, looking at your situation, your trip and the terms and conditions of your existing insurance policies could help you determine whether the benefits outweigh the costs.

Melbourne-based doctor leads medical team on a life-changing mission overseas

ORLANDO, Fla. — A team is traveling across the world to the land of happiness, bringing relief to those who have been struggling.

What You Need To Know

dr. kenneth sands and his team will travel to the remote asian country of bhutan  the melbourne-based team's mission is a week of knee surgeries more than 500 people signed up for 50 spots for total joint replacements the buddhist country is known for the happiness of its residents, but it is remote  elective total joint procedures are uncommon in bhutan, the doctor said.

Dr. Kenneth Sands is leading a team to Bhutan, a Himalayan kingdom nestled between India and Tibet, on a mission with Operation International . Other medical professionals will join the Melbourne-based team in Asia.

“I’ve been to Indonesia, other parts of the world. But Bhutan was not on my list,” Sands conceded, adding, “It’s going to be life-changing.”

The Buddhist country is known for awe-inspiring vistas and a consistent distinction as one of the happiest countries in the world, periodically surveying the happiness of its inhabitants using the Gross National Happiness, or GNH, index.

But, it’s also a country that is incredibly isolated.

Sands said elective total joint procedures are few and far between in Bhutan, so the orthopedic team is on the mission to bring healing.

Over the course of a week, the team will perform 50 total joint replacements. More than 500 people signed up.

“It’s been a labor of love. Right now, I’m more just stressed, trying to put all this together. I have 22 people’s lives I’m taking care of, just my team,” Sands explained. “Then we are going to attempt to operate on 50 individuals in Bhutan, so the gravity of that is significant.”

The doctor, who most days practices at Melbourne Regional Medical Center, is busy with knee and hip replacements.

He chose to practice medicine after watching his mother often sick with diabetes as he grew up. Sands landed upon orthopedics in particular when he realized something like a knee surgery could offer immediate improvements for patients.

“They are hurting, their lives are affected. Within a short prior of time we make them better,” he said.

Although Sands spent time in the service, he always dreamed of taking his medical skills on a mission to an underserved area of the world.

One year ago, he got that opportunity, as Sands connected with the medical volunteer organization and began planning an April trip to Bhutan.

Months later, equipment had to be shipped overseas. Funds needed to be raised online. And a storage facility packed with soft goods — like gowns, masks and gloves — had to be packed up, as the individual team members, too, zipped up their own bags.

As he contemplated the journey, friends who had been on mission trips before prepared Sands for a reality that not all might go according to plan.

“One of my other friends spent the entire time in customs and never got to do (surgery on) anybody," Sands said. "We’re prepared for bad things can happen, but even if we just help a few people, it’s going to be great.”

The journey to the country also is “harrowing,” he explained, due to the distance and hours spent in flight and because of the final descent into an airport in the middle of a remote valley. That flight is a challenge for many pilots, he said.

The dangers of the journey were not lost on Sands’ wife, who he shared was “extremely concerned,” even suggesting the doctor update his will in case anything should happen to him abroad.

But Sands said he was resolute. If ever there were a time to take on such an adventure, it's now from a career and family standpoint, he said.

“I just think I’m moving into another transition of my career, done what I set out to do when I choose to become a doctor,” Sands said. “I built my practice, helped thousands of people. Now I’m in that stage where I’m trying to give back.”

Editors note: As of the publication date of this story, Spectrum News 13 had not yet been able to reach Sands to find out whether he and his team had returned from Bhutan.

The best travel insurance offers financial protection against unexpected events affecting your trip, such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost luggage.

Types of coverage

  • Medical Coverage: Ensures your medical expenses are covered in case of illness or injury.
  • Trip Cancellation/Interruption Coverage: Provides reimbursement if your trip is canceled or cut short due to unforeseen events.
  • Baggage Coverage: Covers loss, damage, or theft of personal items during your trip.

Benefits of travel insurance for seniors

  • Peace of Mind: Knowing you're covered in case of emergencies can make your travel stress-free.
  • Financial Protection: Shields you from potentially overwhelming medical costs and trip cancellations fees.
  • Assistance Services: Many plans offer 24/7 assistance services, providing help whenever and wherever you need it.

Making the most of your plan

After choosing a plan, it's crucial to understand your policy fully and know what services are available to you in case of an emergency.

Understanding your policy

  • Read the fine print and understand the claims process to avoid surprises.

Emergency assistance services

  • Familiarize yourself with the emergency assistance services offered by your plan and keep all necessary contact information handy.

How to pick senior travel insurance

It's wise to compare several different travel insurance policies for the best coverage and pricing, as premiums vary widely between insurers and depend on factors like your age and travel destination.

That said, some of the more essential coverages to look for if you're a senior citizen include:

  • Travel medical coverage - This coverage will pay for your medical bills outside the US.
  • Medical evacuation coverage - If you're injured or become sick while traveling, this coverage will transport you to the nearest hospital or even back home if your condition necessitates it.
  • Preexisting conditions - Coverage for known health conditions. You'll need to purchase travel insurance within a certain time period from when you book your trip to qualify for a preexisting condition waiver .
  • Cancel for any reason (CFAR) - The name says it all! It'll cost extra and you'll need to purchase insurance early, but it's the most comprehensive trip cancellation coverage you can get. Note that CFAR insurance usually only covers up to 75% of your trip fees.
  • Trip cancellation insurance - This coverage provides reimbursement for your prepaid and nonrefundable costs if you cannot make your trip due to an unforeseen event.
  • Baggage delay insurance - This coverage will reimburse you for essentials like toiletries and clothes if your bags are delayed.
  • Lost luggage insurance - This coverage will reimburse you up to a specified amount if your bags get lost en route.

Of these, the most critical to note are whether or not your policy covers preexisting conditions and the limits for travel medical insurance and emergency medical evacuation.

Some insurance companies offer a waiver that will cover preexisting conditions. You'll have to follow the requirements for adding a waiver to your policy, like insuring the entire cost of your trip. Or purchase the policy within a specific time after making your first trip deposit payments.

You'll also want to find a policy with high maximum limits for travel medical and emergency medical evacuation coverage. These types of expenses can be substantial, so you want to have appropriate coverage.

When comparing senior travel insurance options, we looked at the following factors to evaluate each travel insurance provider:

  • Coverage limits: We looked at each travel insurance company's coverage amounts for benefits like medical emergencies and trip cancellation.
  • Flexibility: We looked at how customizable a policy is, so you can choose what your travel insurance policy covers .
  • Coverage for preexisting conditions: Preexisting conditions are one of the more critical factors for travel insurance for senior citizens, so we looked at travel insurance companies that offer the best coverage for preexisting conditions.
  • Price: We compared travel insurance providers offering reasonable basic and comprehensive coverage rates.
  • Benefits geared towards seniors: We compared travel insurance companies that offer solid coverage for senior citizens, like medical evacuation, COVID-19 coverage, and trip cancellation.

Seniors should look for travel insurance policies that offer comprehensive medical coverage, including for preexisting conditions and emergency medical evacuation. They should also consider policies with higher coverage limits to ensure adequate protection. Additionally, seniors should seek travel insurance plans that provide 24/7 assistance services, as well as coverage for trip cancellations, interruptions, and baggage protection.

The cost of senior travel insurance coverage can vary depending on your age, overall health, state of residence, travel destination, and length of your trip. However, assuming all other factors are the same, you'll pay more for travel insurance at 70 than at 30.

All travel insurance companies, except World Nomads, included in this guide offer coverage for pre-existing medical conditions as long as you buy your policy within the qualifying period from when you placed your trip deposit.

Allianz is the best travel insurance for seniors due to its wide array of medical coverages and emergency medical transport. Allianz also offers multi-trip insurance policies , which could make sense for seniors who travel frequently.

In some instances, travel insurance companies will have age eligibility restrictions, often only insuring people 80 years old and younger.
