Billie Jean at 40: A History of the Style Behind the Song

On this day 40 years ago, the music industry experienced a seismic shift. Once that would forever alter the course of music videos and pave the way for future artists. If you haven’t already been able to tell by looking at the pictures above, today is the 40th anniversary of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean'' short film making its debut on MTV. And to celebrate, we’re going to walk you through a little bit of the song’s history, the iconic style behind the video and its respective performances, and how both evolved over the years. This is another fun one as we continue to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Thriller .

Billie Jean History

“Billie Jean” was released as the second single off the Thriller album, following up Jackson’s duet with Paul McCartney “The Girl Is Mine.” It took just three weeks for the song to reach No. 1 on the R&B Chart becoming his fastest-rising number one single since the early J5 days. Two months after its January release, “Billie Jean” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with the track also grabbing the top spot in the UK, Canada, Switzerland, Belgium, Sweden, Norway, Italy, and Austria.

The song also won Best R&B Song and Best R&B Male Vocal Performance at the 1984 Grammy Awards, following up on its Favorite Pop/Rock single win at the American Music Awards a few weeks prior. And that was only the beginning as “Billie Jean” would go on to become one of Jackson’s most iconic tracks.

Centered around a paparazzi photographer following Jackson around but never catching him, the film was magic and featured Michael rocking an iconic look that we would only ever see him wear in the video (because the performances would bring forth the signature iconic look for the song). For the “Billie Jean” video, Jackson wore black tailored leather pants that cut off around the ankle, a satin black blazer, pink calf socks, white penny loafers, and a pink dress shirt with a red bow tie. While that in itself was groundbreaking, it was the performance costume that would help elevate the song to the next level.

While it’s unknown exactly who designed Jackson’s costume for the Motown 25 event, we do know that the jacket worn during The Jacksons’ Victory Tour the following year was designed by legendary costume designer Bill Whitten. In the years that followed, Jackson would don similar versions of the “Billie Jean” outfit that would be slightly updated, but never straying from the original look.

Below is an evolution of the “Billie Jean” outfit over the years.

Behind the Meaning of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean”

Alex Hopper

Updated:

Written by Jackson himself and produced alongside Grammy-award winner Quincy Jones, “Billie Jean” tackles the “groupie culture” Michael and his brothers experienced while on tour as the Jackson 5.

Videos by American Songwriter

The song went on to reach the No.1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Jackson’s fastest rising single since “ABC” and “Say You’ll Be There” in 1970.

Meaning Behind the Lyrics

While the meaning behind the famous story of an obsessed woman stalking the “King of Pop,” calling him out as the father of her son, has floated around since the song’s release, Jackson continually denied the story before his death in 2009. Instead, he says “Billie Jean” is more of a character representing the many groupies he and his brothers were “plagued” with over the years.

In his 1988 autobiography, Moonwalk, Jackson says, “There never was a real Billie Jean. The girl in the song is a composite of people my brothers have been plagued with over the years. I could never understand how these girls could say they were carrying someone’s child when it wasn’t true.”

Billie Jean is not my lover She’s just a girl who claims that I am the one But the kid is not my son She says I am the one, but the kid is not my son

Jackson’s biographer told a different story in his 1991 book, The Magic and the Madness. In it, he says that Billie Jean was inspired by real letters the singer received in 1981 from a woman claiming he was the father of her twins. Despite no reaction from Jackson, the woman continually sent letters before eventually escalating to sending a gun and a murder threat – talk about a die-hard fan.

But who can stand when she’s in demand Her schemes and plans ‘Cause we danced on the floor in the round So take my strong advice, just remember to always think twice

Breaking the MTV Color Barrier

The accompanying video for the song is often credited with breaking the color barrier on MTV. While a clip from reggae band Musical Youth for “Pass The Dutchie” was the first video from a Black act to make waves on the network, they were largely considered a novelty, with no member being older than 16.

After the oh-so-’80s video for “Billie Jean” debuted and was well-received, more Black artists began appearing on the network soon after—most notably Prince.

MTV was widely accused of racism during the era after Rick James’ funky hit “Super Freak” was rejected. With the added barrier of record companies not investing in videos for Black artists, thinking MTV wouldn’t play them, many Black musicians struggled to gain air time.

All of that went out the window with “Billie Jean,” as Jackson paved the way for more Black artists to be featured on the taste-making network.

“Compared to Michael, MTV staples like REO Speedwagon and Journey suddenly looked even more boring,” Rob Tannenbaum, co-author of  I Want My MT V : The Uncensored Story of the Music Video Revolution said. “When Michael’s videos created higher ratings for MTV, network executives claimed they’d ‘learned a lesson’ and tentatively embraced the softer side of black pop music, especially Lionel Richie.”

Jackson’s 1983 Motown 25: Yesterday, Today , Forever performance, marked the first time “Billie Jean” was performed live. The performance also marked the first time Jackson appeared to walk on air in his, now signature, moonwalk. The unsuspected move wowed the audience and lead to its use in almost all future performances. Adding to the image-making performance, it was also the first time Jackson donned his ubiquitous one-handed glove.

Watch the full performance below.

While disco was steadily dying, Jackson moved in a new musical direction, opting for a mix of pop, rock, and funk on his sixth studio album, Thriller . He also moved towards darker themes in his music, like the paranoia and obsession motifs in “Billie Jean.”

Thriller was Jackson’s first number one on the U.S. Billboard Top LPs and Tapes chart, where he spent 37 non-consecutive weeks at the top sport.

Along with “Billie Jean,” seven other singles from the album reached the top ten including “The Girl Is Mine,” “Beat It,” “Wanna Be Startin’ Something,” “Human Nature,” “P.Y.T,” and “Thriller.”

After his performance at Motown 25, sales for the album skyrocketed, selling one million copies worldwide per week. By the end of 1983, 32 million copies of Thriller were sold, making it the best-selling album of all time.

" Billie Jean " is the sixth track and second single on Michael Jackson 's Thriller album, released on January 2, 1983. "Billie Jean" was written solely by Jackson who also co-produced it with Quincy Jones . This song is considered one of the greatest songs ever released by The King of Pop, thanks to its timelessness and the introduction of the Moonwalk dance during his performance of it at Motown 25 . [1] The single was so successful that it received numerous honors and sealed Jackson's status as an international pop icon.

The long version was released as the 12" extended version of the "Billie Jean" single. In it, the intro and outro are longer, with the track ending with ad-libs: "You know you ain't (Not my lover) / You know you can't (Not my lover)" , which would eventually go on to be re-used for live performances of the song. This was also originally going to be the "Billie Jean" featured on the album, however it had to be cut due to limitations of a 12" LP record at the time. It was released on streaming services through Thriller 25 (Apple Music only) and Thriller 40 . [2]

The 1981 demo of the track was released on Thriller: Special Edition . It features Jackson mumbling and saying nonsensical words. The iconic drums are also replaced here by the LinnDrum. [3]

Background [ ]

Backstory [ ].

There's two stories surrounding "Billie Jean's" origins.

According to Michael's biographer, J. Randy Tabaorelli, "Billie Jean" was inspired by letters Jackson received from a woman claiming he was the father of one of her twins back in 1981. Jackson had never met the woman and ignored it, after being use to receiving many letters as such. However, she continued to send letters stating that she loved him and wanted to be with him. Some of the letters got so disturbing to him to the extent that he suffered continuous nightmares about her. Eventually, Jackson received a parcel envelope containing a photograph of the fan, a gun, and a letter instructing him to kill himself at a particular time. The fan would do the same after she had killed "their" baby, so they could be together in the next life. To her disappointment, Jackson had the photograph framed and hung above the dining room table of their family home. He would later discovered that the fan had been sent to a psychiatric hospital.

According to Michael himself however, the song wasn't inspired by anyone he dealt with personally, but rather his brothers .

Production [ ]

The song was mixed 91 times by audio engineer Bruce Swedien . Ultimately, the second mix made was chosen to be the final one.

Originally, this song was actually disliked by Quincy who wanted it removed from the track list. He felt it was too weak, he disliked the intro and wanted to change the title to "Not My Lover". Jackson reportedly didn't speak to Jones for days after a dispute regarding credits for producing the song.

Music video [ ]

"Billie Jean's" music video features Jackson dancing on the street and being chased by a photographer. It was directed by Irish filmmaker Steve Barron . and Filmed in November 1982.

The clip was initially refused to be played on MTV , as according to them, the video didn't fit their standards. However, after Walter Yetnikoff , then-president of CBS Records , told the executives he will go public with MTV's stance on racial discrimination, the network relented.

The music video premiered on March 10, 1983, and was one of the first music videos by a black artist to be played regularly by MTV. It also helped Thriller sell 10 million more copies.

Live performances [ ]

Michael Jackson performing "Billie Jean" at Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever (1983)

Michael Jackson performed "Billie Jean" on all of his tours, starting with the Jacksons ' Victory tour . Michael performed to the song for the last time during the This Is It rehearsals on June 6, 2009, few weeks before his passing .

For each live performance, Jackson wore a sparkly black jacket, a single white glove, white socks and a fedora.

Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever [ ]

One of the first and most iconic performances of "Billie Jean" happened on May 16, 1983, when the Jacksons made an appearance at the Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever television special. Michael initially declined performing with his brothers, as at the time he wanted to distance himself from the band and Motown and rather focus on his solo work. He reconsidered the offer after he discussed it with Berry Gordy (founder of Motown and Rockwell 's father). Jackson agreed only if he's allowed to perform "Billie Jean".

Some of Jackson's most iconic dance moves debuted during the performance as well, such as moonwalk (although not created by him) or the toe stand. These became Michael's signature dance moves.

The special was watched by 50 million people and got Jackson an Emmy nomination. [6]

Despite the show's success, Michael was actually very dissatisfied with the performance. After getting off stage, he cried due to being unhappy with his spin and toe stand as he wanted it to last longer than it actually did. The artist gradually improved at doing the moves with years going by.

"Billie Jean" reached number one in multiple countries around the world. The song had topped the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard Hot Black Singles, also having become the fastest charting song performed by Jackson since the Jackson 5's " ABC ", " The Love You Save " and " I'll Be There " in 1970.

The track had charted so well in fact, that it not only became Michael's best-selling solo single, but it boosted sales of Thriller , helping it become the best-selling album of all time.

Awards and nominations [ ]

"Billie Jean" became one of the best selling singles in 1983 and even worldwide. The honors include 2 Grammy Awards, one American Music Award, and even an introduction into the Music Video Producers Hall of Fame. The song topped both the U.S. and U.K. charts simultaneously.

In other countries, "Billie Jean" topped the charts of Spain and Switzerland, reached the top 10 in Austria, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, and Sweden and peaked at #45 in France. Considered to be one of the most revolutionary songs in history, "Billie Jean" was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 1989.

2008 Remix [ ]

" Billie Jean 2008 " is a remix of Michael Jackson's song "Billie Jean", released as the fifteenth track on Thriller 25 . The rework got made with Kanye West in 2007 who also provides vocals for the bridge. Gone are the original drums and iconic bass, and the production is more reminiscent of that on West's 2007 album, Graduation .

Pepsi Generation

  • "Billie Jean" was famously used for two Pepsi commercials from 1984 Michael starred in. In both of the adverts, a remix of the song was featured, titled "Pepsi Generation". [8] The collaboration between Jackson and Pepsi would continue for many years to come.
  • After every time Michael would perform "Billie Jean" live, he would throw his fedora to the audience. The hats were signed by him and featured a special message, e.g. "all my love". [9]
  • Michael sang the overdub vocals for "Billie Jean" through a six-foot-long cardboard tube.
  • During the recording sessions for " We Are the World ", Jackson came up to Daryl Hall (of Hall & Oates), and told him "Hey, man, I hope you're okay with that. You know, I stole 'No Can Do' for 'Billie Jean'." [10]
  • The title that Quincy requested to change was still referenced in the chorus.
