Air Force Decorations Part 1 of 2

For part 1 of this series I focused on my experience with how the Air Force Achievement Medal (AFAM), Air Force Commendation Medal (AFCM), and Meritorious Service Medal (MSM) are practically awarded. For part 2 my goal is to focus on some administrative tips for completing each level of decoration. As you progress from the AFAM to the MSM the quality of achievement should improve, and this is evident by the progressive level of the approval authority. The only way to achieve a consistent quality across all levels across the Air Force is to adhere to the guidance outlined in the AFI.

Achievement Decorations

For “achievement” types of decorations we should lean heavily on our NCOs and SNCOs. We need to ensure they are tracking and familiar with the unit precedent for each level of award, both in-house and with similar units across the Air Force. As I said in part 1, some examples of “achievements” recognized at the AFAM level are one year of base honor guard volunteer service or support for a contingency operation. For example, if you are at an overseas base and a Combatant Command called the wing you are assigned to into action, it may be appropriate to fight for your NCO to be awarded an AFAM if his duties supported the contingency mission.

Service Decorations

For “service” decorations it is generally accepted that a 3-4 year of duty warrants a decoration. The inclusive date for “service” decorations cannot overlap and the AFI provides very clear guidance for what the dates should be.

1.15.12. Inclusive Dates: The dates to be used for inclusive dates are as follows: 1.15.12.1. PCS: Start date is the date the member arrived to the station/unit; stop date is the date of final outprocessing. 1.15.12.2. PCA: Start date is the date the member arrived to the unit; stop date is the day prior to the effective date of the unit change. 1.15.12.3. Separation/Retirement: Start date is the date the member arrived to the station/unit; stop date is the day prior to the separation/retirement effective date. 1.15.12.5. Achievement: Start date is the date member inprocessed (TDY) or the date the special project or duty started; stop date is the final outprocessing day (TDY) or the date of when the special project or duty ended. 1.15.12.6. Extended Tour: Start date is the date the member arrived to the station/unit; stop date is the day prior to the 3- or 4-year point (see paragraph 1.16.1.6) AFI 36-2803, The Air Force Military Awards and Decorations Program

The “3-4 year” rule is not a hard rule, and the quality of performance during that period is important. Maybe a SrA truly deserves an AFCM after four years of service. Maybe a TSgt who failed two fitness assessments doesn’t deserve a decoration at all. Bottom line, it needs to make sense. Decorations have to be earned and are not a given.

Extended Tour Decorations

My second point for this post is the award of extended tour decorations. Typically an enlisted Airman serves a 3-4 year tour, but it is possible for someone to serve 6-8 years at the same base. Awarding an Airman with one decoration for eight years of service may send a negative message when the Airman is competing for a SNCO promotion board later down the road. Due to this, the AFI authorizes what are called “extended tour” (also known as “mid-tour”) decorations. With these you just have to be careful about what you fight for. For example, a SNCO who served five years at the same assignment may end up leaving with one extended tour AFCMs and one end of tour AFCM, versus 1 MSM for the five-year period. That may matter to the individual.

Opening and Closing Sentences

My final point for this post is about how the opening and closing statements for decorations are determined. The level of award coupled by the decoration reason determine the exact wording of the opening and closing statements. Luckily, this is populated automatically by the system we use to process decorations called vPC. It is just important for us to be mindful of what it is supposed to say so we can make sure it is correct.

The below examples are just the common examples outlined in the AFI 36-2803, The Air Force Military Awards and Decorations Program . Dig into the actual AFI for more details for your specific situation.

AFAM Opening Sentence

3.5.13.1. Opening Sentence: Captain Michelle Canmore distinguished herself by (meritorious service) OR (outstanding achievement), as (duty assignment, and office location) OR while assigned to (office location).

AFAM Closing Sentence

3.5.13.3. Closing Sentence. Confine the closing to one sentence which will personalize the summation.

AFCM Opening Sentence

3.5.12.1. Opening Sentence: Technical Sergeant Ami Ponde distinguished herself by (meritorious service) OR (outstanding achievement) OR (an act of courage) as (duty assignment and office) OR (while assigned to (office) from _____to ).

AFCM Closing Sentence

3.5.12.4. Closing Sentence: The distinctive accomplishments of Sergeant Ponde reflect credit upon herself and the United States Air Force.

3.5.12.4.2. Retirement Award: The distinctive accomplishments of Sergeant Ponde culminate a (long and) distinguished career in the service of her country and reflect credit upon herself and the United States Air Force.

3.5.12.4.3. Separation Award: The distinctive accomplishments of Sergeant Ponde while serving her country reflect credit upon herself and the United States Air Force.

MSM Opening Statement

3.5.9.1. Opening Sentence: Senior Master Sergeant Mickey Smith distinguished himself in the performance of outstanding service to the United States as (duty title) OR (while assigned to the (office) from _____to ).

MSM Closing Statement

3.5.9.3. Closing Sentence: The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Sergeant Smith reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force:

3.5.9.3.1. Retirement Award: The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Sergeant Smith culminate a (long and) distinguished career in the service of his country and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

3.5.9.3.2. Separation Award: The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Sergeant Smith while serving his country reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

Administrative Instructions

Here are a few helpful tips from the AFI I have learned along the way. Reference paragraph 3.4.

  • The use of the dollar sign ($) is typically not recommended, however, will be accepted if used in the proper format ($10 million).
  • Numeric designators of units should read 3d Aerospace Wing, 4th Mission Support Group, etc.
  • Use Times New Roman (TMS RMN) 10- to 12-point size or comparable font.
  • Length of citation should not exceed:
  • 3.4.8.1. MSM, AM, AAM, and AFCM citations: 14 lines maximum
  • 3.4.8.2. AFAM citations: 11 or 12 lines maximum

The actual writing of a decoration is something that takes practice. In general you review all of the EPRs or OPRs for the time period, pick out the best bullets, then write them in narrative form. If there is a demand I will likely do a part 3 to this post at a later date.

Former Enlisted

I have sort of an odd question when it comes to decorations. Is it possible for the flight commander to mail the actual physical award/certificate (example: AF achievement medal award) to the airman after they have separated? I ask because many of us who served at Beale AFB, CA never got our awards once we separated. They were held up at the base’s MPF. The approval process is very long. So, by the time the award is approved by the Group Commander, the airman is no longer active duty. Btw, everyone should try to stay away from Beale AFB, CA. Bad morale on base. Go to Travis AFB instead.

' src=

The short answer is yes. Currently I can only speak to those who use the vPC site process. Once MPS approves it a CSS member, either in MPF or at the squadron level, can pull the approved PDF of the decoration from vPC and print it on the decoration paper blank. My commander wet signs the decoration and gets it back to the CSS member to mail to the member. The CSS ideally has a valid/current mailing address on file… Ideally you get the decoration before you depart but yeah, some people suck.

The unit can even use government funds to mail it so it is just a matter of if the staff had the bandwidth. I’d reach out to the group exec and see if they can help you out, that isn’t right.

Welcome to the Midwest

America's vast midwestern region, in the heart of the United States... where time has stood still on charming Mackinac Island... where the beauty of Lake Michigan is enhanced by the glacially carved dunes... and further west where the largest stone carving in the world exists, Crazy Horse Monument... and to the Mount Rushmore National Memorial, where a larger than life presidential memorial pays tribute to four former US presidents.

Lake michigan, meet mighty lake michigan.

The second-largest of the Great Lakes by volume (after Lake Superior) and third-largest by surface area (after Lake Huron), Lake Michigan is the only one of the Great Lakes completely inside the US. Since the 19th century, Lake Michigan has played a pivotal role in shipping, transportation and trade across the US, and helped Chicago become a dominant force in the Midwest and throughout the country. Some 12 million people live along its shores, and depend on the lake not only for its commercial and transportation value, but for its scenic beauty, the dunes and beaches along its shorelines, and the myriad recreation opportunities it offers.

The Henry Ford

Innovation is the word at the henry ford in dearborn.

The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation and Greenfield Village – a.k.a. "The Henry Ford" – is an award-winning, state-of-the-art museum in Dearborn, Michigan, founded by industrialist Henry Ford. Its interactive exhibits are dedicated to innovation – not just in machines, but in trailblazers who shaped the world we live in. Within its nine acres of exhibition space, you can step aboard the Montgomery bus in which civil rights activist Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat; make yourself at home in Buckminster Fuller's autonomous Dymaxion House; discover the science behind Pixar animation and motors that moved the nation; and see the Wright Brothers' bicycle shop, Thomas Edison's laboratory, Igor Sikorsky's prototype helicopter, the house Henry Ford was born in, and the courthouse where Abe Lincoln practiced law! Attached to the complex is Greenfield Village, a fine living museum of Americana.

Mackinac Island, Michigan

Step back in time on michigan's mackinac island.

Vehicle-free Mackinac Island – off the Michigan coast in the Straits of Mackinac connecting Lakes Michigan and Huron – has been a popular retreat since 19th-century industrialists built imposing summer "cottages" here, and remains serenely lost in time. The only way to get around is by foot, bicycle, or horse-drawn carriage, as you make your way past impeccable Victorian mansions and out to the fringes of forest, marshes, beaches and 19th-century Fort Mackinac. The island is home to the palatial Grand Hotel, which lays claim to the longest porch in the world. Since 1887, the Grand has hosted many presidents, as well as the likes of Mark Twain and Thomas Edison (who first demonstrated his phonograph on the hotel's iconic porch).

Chicago, Illinois

My kind of town, chicago is....

Whether you call it the "Windy City," the "City of Big Shoulders," America's "Second City," or just plain Chicago, this Illinois city at the southern tip of Lake Michigan gained prominence during America's great westward expansion of the 19th century, when it became the growing nation's stockyards and the Midwest's industrial and transportation center… and eventually, one of the largest and most influential cities in the country. Following 1871's disastrous Great Chicago Fire that destroyed much of the city, young architects like Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, and Mies van der Rohe began transforming Chicago into a thriving modern metropolis for the 20th century and beyond… the city you'll explore with Tauck today.

Touring de Force | Top 10 BEST Mid-size Sports Tourers of 2023 [500-800cc]

You don't need to buy big to go big when it comes to Sports Tourers... as our Top 10 Best Mid-Size Sports Tourers of 2023 show

Ollie Barstow's picture

Summer is just around the corner and if you're a biker with an intrepid streak, the time has come for you to begin planning those picturesque sun-baked tours on your mile-munching, no-nonsense Sports Tourer motorcycle.

A category defined by its size - let's call them XL, L and M - it matters not whether you prefer a beefy, high-performance machine like the ' XL ' KTM 1290 Super GT, a well-kitted out all-rounder like the ' L ' Yamaha Tracer 9 or prefer something more compact - such as the segment we're focusing on here - like the ' M ' sized Kawasaki Versys 650, the same key values apply throughout; practicality, durability and comfort.

That said, if anything, models in the Mid-Size Sports Tourer class have to work even harder, multi-tasking between urban commuting and longer distance journeys. It is a high bar our Top 10 here must strive for, but only one can be #1. Read on to find out which comes with Visordown's seal of approval...

2023 Benelli TRK 502.png

10 - Benelli TRK 502

If there has been an influx of new models entering the mid-range Sports Tourer segment  from the likes of Moto Morini and Voge then one of the reasons - you might be surprised to learn - is because of this, the Benelli TRK 502.

It doesn’t hurt that it is built in China, keeping costs down further to just under £6,000, making it a particularly popular model in Asia and parts of Europe right now.

In the context of its very obvious brief - cheap, easy to ride, economical and practical enough for longer journeys - the Benelli TRK 502 is a worthy consideration, but it also looks dated, is ponderous on the road and feels more budget than rivals.

Voge 500 DS.jpg

9 - Voge 500 DS

It’s also a distant cousin of Lexmoto, with whom Voge shares its distribution network, which should help the brand get off the ground in the UK too, though we’ll use the word ‘premium’ with a pinch of salt.

Indeed, in this company, the firm’s entry-level sports tourer, the Voge 500 DS, is definitely the budget consideration of the mid-capacity sector.

This is no bad thing though and at just £5,399 the 500 DS is excellent value, undercutting its most like-for-like rival - the Honda CB500X - by more than £1k. You won’t get the same feel of quality as its Japanese counterpart, but there is no denying the CB500X has definitely lended some inspiration to the handsome, albeit bland, design.

Conveniently available on an A2 licence, the 500 DS offers decent performance and versatility. If you can’t stretch your budget, then the Voge 500 DS is a lot of motorcycle for the money, but if it can the Honda is a substantially superior choice.

2023 CFMoto 650GT.jpg

8 - CFMoto 650GT

Something of an anomaly in the mid-capacity segment, the CFMoto 650 GT presents shades of the Kawasaki Ninja 1000SX in that it blends a bit of sportsbike into its Sports Tourer silhouette.

Essentially a faired version of the 650 NK, the 650 GT - available alongside the sister soft-roading 650MT - has still undergone a fairly significant transformation and though it is now looking its age, it still has a more dynamic look than some of its dowdier rivals.

Alas, its dated underpinnings betray it on the road with the 649cc 62bhp engine feeling a touch breathless when lugging the hefty kerb weight around.

Suzuki V-Strom 650.png

7 - Suzuki V-Strom 650

The Suzuki V-Strom 800DE may be arriving in dealerships about now, but its 650cc V-Twin predecessor remains on sale for now as a more affordable option.

Though partly pitched to the mid-capacity adventure segment, the standard Suzuki V-Strom 650 arguably does a better impression of a sports tourer, even if that extra go-anywhere ability does show in its £7,999 price tag, which is high for a model that can trace its roots back to 2004.

The rugged styling, though dated, is synonymously V-Strom and it comes with a host of luggage options to enhance what is already a fairly practical machine, while that off-roading ability does come in handy once in a while too.

Honda NC750X.png

6 - Honda NC750X

An oft-forgotten model in Honda’s expansive range, the Honda NC750X has long been difficult to pigeon-hole, sitting a little awkwardly between a Sports Tourer and being a more versatile naked motorcycle.

Upgraded from 700cc to 750cc in 2021, another round of updates for 2023 added new colour options - which do their bit popping what is a handsome, if unassuming looking machine - while standard kit includes Honda Selectable Torque Control, throttle-by-wire, LED lighting and the option of a Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT).

On the downside, at £7,849, it represents a £1,200 premium over the sister CB500X which - if you don’t need the extra power - is the more logical choice.

2023 Moto Morini X-Cape 650.jpeg

5 - Moto Morini X-Cape 650

Under the skin, the X-Cape 650 impresses with the inclusion Marzocchi front forks, Brembo brakes, Bosch ABS and Pirelli tyres, while a 7” TFT dashboard, LED headlights, adjustable windscreen and USB chargers belie that competitive price further.

While Moto Morini might consider the X-Cape 650 to have the Yamaha Tenere 700 in its sights, in reality it is better suited to asphalt, being comfortable and composed for long distance riding, even if the 649cc engine needs to be worked hard to get the most from its 59bhp.

Throw in decent fit and finish and the Moto Morini X-Cape 650 is worth the consideration.

Kawasaki Versys 650.png

4 - Kawasaki Versys 650

The swiss-army knife of motorcycles, the Kawasaki Versys 650 is quite possibly the most Kawasaki motorcycle Kawasaki has ever produced. Let me explain…

Updated in 2022 to bring its design into sharper line with the rest of the range, there Versys 650 is unmistakable in its handsome appearance - even without that pearly green paint job - while it feels well put together, is comfortable and compliant to ride, should prove reliable, is versatile (it is named Versys, after all…) and offers the largest fuel tank in its class at 21-litres.

Indeed, while it’s not cheap at £8,349, equipment includes a TFT dashboard, Kawasaki Traction Control (KTRC), LED lighting and smartphone connectivity. Basically, the Versys 650 will tick most boxes on the proverbial wish list.

It sounds like the perfect motorcycle and in many ways the Kawasaki Versys 650, it just lacks a certain joie de vivre that makes our top three just a touch more appealing.

Visordown Preview | Kawasaki Versys 650 [2022]

Honda CB500X.jpg

3 - Honda CB500X

We’re big fans of Honda’s rather anomalous ‘500’ range of models, of which there are now five following the recent addition of the CL500 scrambler, but for us the best of the quintet is the Honda CB500X soft-roading compact tourer.

Kudos to whoever’s shrewd decision it was to pitch a range of mid-capacity models at the 500 (or rather, the 471cc) end of the scale, which slashes costs and adds a quality option to a subsection of the class somewhat lacking in them.

Priced at £6,699, the Honda CB500X was last updated in 2022 and features Showa forks, full LED lighting, a 19-inch front wheel for light ventures off road and LCD dashboard.

As such, the question here is whether you need the extra 200cc offered by its distant-ish Yamaha, Triumph and Kawasaki rivals. If you do, then pick one of the aforementioned three, if not, the CB500X is a fine choice.

Visordown Review | Honda CB500X [2022]

2023 Triumph Tiger Sport 660.jpg

2 - Triumph Tiger Sport 660

Triumph brings a little bit of prestige to what is a fairly humdrum class with the launch of the Triumph Tiger Sport 660 , its more practical spin-off from the brilliant Trident 660 naked.

An intriguing proposition in a category largely dominated by its Japanese rivals, the Tiger Sport 660 - as with most Triumphs - swerves the norm with its offering of a triple-cylinder engine, in this case the frisky and audibly-satisfying 660cc, which at 80bhp, helps put the Sport in Sports Tourer more convincingly than any other rival.

It’s similarly impressive in the twisty stuff without feeling too cumbersome in the urban environments, while fit and finish is a cut above most too.

The downsides? Well, while the Trident 660 is understatedly attractive, the Tiger Sport 660 is just understated (trans: dull) to look at and while it feels like a quality product, it is reflected in its aspirational £8,945 price tag.

Visordown Review | Triumph Tiger Sport 660 [2022]

2023 Yamaha Tracer 7.jpg

1 - Yamaha Tracer 7

They came for its Mid-Size Sports Tourer throne, but the Yamaha Tracer 7 is still sitting pretty at the head of our ranking.

A model that really is hard to fault, the well thought-out Tracer 7 sees off stiff opposition largely thanks to the added attention to detail Yamaha has clearly paid to ensure it is as practical, comfortable and versatile as it can be.

With prices starting at £8,810, recent updates have freshened things up with revised brakes, tweaked suspension, a new 5” TFT display and Bluetooth connectivity the highlights. Meanwhile, the flagship Tracer 7 GT - a £900 premium - adds larger cases, a more durable windscreen and a more rigid rear-end to handle added ballast.

Weighing less than 200kg, the Tracer 7 is sprightly through bends, but displays the maturity of the larger Tracer 9 on the straight and narrow, while the 689cc CP2 engine offers a fizzy 72bhp on tap to make it feel like a true all-rounder.

Put simply, Yamaha has distilled its experience in this sector into the 2023 Yamaha Tracer 7… and it shows.

Black hills, south dakota (a classic).

Roadtrip to Mount Rushmore

Recommended trip: 7-10 days

The Black Hills in South Dakota is one of the best places for a road trip in the Midwest.  There is so much to see and do, you could easily spend months here, but for a shorter trip, 7-10 days would be great.

Rapid City is probably the best place to fly in and out of for a Black Hills trip. I would start with a couple of days in Badlands National Park .  Spend the night in Wall, visit Wall Drug and the Badlands from here, then head over to Wind Cave National Park.

Spend a night or 2 in Hot Springs to easily access the park where you can do some hiking, look for bison, and do a cave tour. Make a stop at the Mammoth site while you’re here, too.

Finally, head to Keystone for a few days. This is the perfect base for exploring the Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park area.

Some of the must-do activities here are visiting Mount Rushmore (of course), driving Iron Mountain Road , driving the Needles Highway, driving the Custer Wildlife Loop Road, hiking Cathedral Spires Trail, and relaxing at Sylvan Lake. If you want a little side trip, you can easily visit Devils Tower in Wyoming, too.

Chicago to St. Louis road trip

Bean in Chicago

Recommended trip: 4-6 days

Driving from Chicago, Illinois to St. Louis, Missouri should be on any midwest road trip. This journey is part of Route 66, one of the original highways in the United States. Route 66 was the primary route for people wishing to move west. Opt to spend one day driving this four and a half-hour drive, or break it up and spend the night in Springfield, Illinois.

For this journey, start in Chicago. Make sure to spend at least 3 days in Chicago. Stay in the centrally located Downtown/River North area. Do not miss the Art Institute of Chicago and the Field Museum.

Grab some pictures at “The Bean” in Millenium Park. Daredevils can opt for “The Edge” experience at the Skydeck or the Tilt Experience at the John Hancock Building.

In the morning depart Chicago to drive south towards Springfield, the capital of Illinois . Stop by the capitol building and take a free tour of the building.

Visit Abraham Lincoln’s grave at Oak Ridge Cemetery and then visit the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. Grab a custard at Krekel’s before heading onward to St. Louis, Missouri.

Plan to spend at least 2 days in St. Louis to explore the main sites. Plan to stay in the Downtown area. Ride to the top of the St. Louis Arch at Gateway Arch National Park.

Take a peek into history at the Old Courthouse, where the Dread Scott decision was made. Make sure to eat some delicious BBQ before departing St. Louis.

Indianapolis, IN to Boyne City, MI

skiing on Boyne Mountain

Recommended trip: 2-3 days

Ready for a fantastic Midwest road trip? Regardless of the time of year, driving from Indianapolis, Indiana to Boyne City, MI is a perfect way to enjoy a long weekend.

Day one, you’ll want to get up early and head to Lansing, MI. It’s about 3.5 hours from Indy, so if you time it right, be sure to stop for lunch at Soup Spoon Cafe – a flight of soup is a fun way to start your mini-vacation. Next, if you have younger kids, head over to the Impression 5 Science Center – they’ll love the full sensory experiences.

After the museum, finish your drive north and check-in at Boyne Mountain for the night. Enjoy a full day of exploring Boyne Mountain and nearby Boyne City the next day. If it’s winter, hit the slopes for a little skiing or even tubing.

If it’s summertime, enjoy hiking, ziplining, or swimming. Downtown Boyne City is situated right on Lake Charlevoix and the town is full of delicious restaurants such as Cafe Sante and Red Mesa as well as unique local boutiques.

Leave Boyne Mountain, and head over to Petoskey for your final day. Start it off right with amazing bagels and donuts at Johann’s Bakery and then hurry over to the main Kilwins location for a factory tour. Kilwin’s offers free tours Monday – Friday every half-hour from 10 – 4:30, and each one ends with a decadent chocolate treat.

After the tour, spend a little time poking around downtown Petoskey for lunch and to pick up a few Michigan souvenirs before heading back to Indianapolis.

Central Iowa road trip

Iowa state capitol building

We highly recommend taking a road trip through Central Iowa. You’ll pass through  Des Moines , Iowa’s capital and other smaller towns that have some fun and interesting attractions.

Heading east along I-80, your first stop should be the town of Winterset. It’s famous for having the  actual  bridges of Madison County. Six of the original 19 covered bridges in Madison County have been preserved just outside of town. Winterset is also the birthplace of John Wayne. There is a museum dedicated to him, with lots of personal and movie memorabilia.

Continuing east, you reach Des Moines. We love this artsy city! It’s easy to find street art there and downtown has a 4.4-acre sculpture park that is free to the public. There’s also a really lovely botanical garden in Des Moines.

Of course, visiting the Capitol Building is a must. You can do a free self-guided tour and marvel at the building’s incredible architecture.

The next stop on your road trip should be the town of Grinnell. Home to Grinnell College, they have a small but impressive art museum on campus.

Grinnell is also the home of one of eight “jewel-box” banks built by legendary architect Louis Sullivan. He is considered the father of modern American architecture and mentored Frank Lloyd Wright. The bank is beautiful, with large stained-glass windows and pink Tennessee marble floors.

And, of course, the Missouri Botanical Gardens, consistently ranked one of the best in the nation.

At night, eat your way through the exploding culinary landscape, with one of the many restaurants helmed by James Beard nominated chefs, like Vicia or Lona’s Lil’ Eats.

Once you’ve gotten your fill, drive west to Hermann, a tiny town that has several wineries, breweries, and distilleries nestled in its idyllic grassy hills. For just $20, the Hermann Trolley will shuttle you between these establishments all day, so you can responsibly imbibe in as many craft beverages as you please.

After a day here, finish your trip with 2 days in Kansas City, famous for its jazz scene. To get a taste of it yourself, head to the American Jazz Museum during the day and the Green Lady Lounge at night to see some of the world’s best musicians in action. Loess Hills Scenic Byway (Missouri to Iowa)

Loess Hills road trip overlook

The Loess Hills Scenic Byway takes its travelers through the most extensive loess (essentially, ancient wind-blown silt deposits) outside a remote region of China! While the byway officially starts at the Iowa state border, the hills themselves run north-south a bit east of the Missouri River, from St. Joseph, Missouri to the Sioux City, Iowa area, passing near Omaha, Nebraska in the middle of the journey.

Each of these cities are destinations in their own right, and combined, they make a road trip full of scenic views and ample entertaining places to stop along the way.

In St. Joe, Missouri, local museums provide fascinating looks at the history of the Pony Express, the art of Thomas Hart Benton (often depicting loess hills!) and the life of the nefarious Jesse James. Near Mound City, Missouri, visit the Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge to see waterfowl and bald eagles.

The Hitchcock Nature Center near Omaha and the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center in Sioux City provide more information about the unique geology, flora, and fauna of the Loess Hills along with opportunities for hiking, boating, and more!

For ideal cruising food, try Billy Boy Drive-through just a few miles from the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center in Soiux City for a burger and a shake!

Minneapolis to omaha.

midwest road trip ideas

Recommended trip: 4-5 days

Get a nice mix of cities and wide open spaces on a Midwest road trip from Minneapolis to Omaha. Starting in Minneapolis, you’ll want to spend 1-2 days visiting the lakes, restaurants and of course, checking out the Mall of America .

Visit the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden in downtown and grab an ice cream cone at Izzy’s Ice Cream . The largest mall in North America (Mall of America) is a whole lot more than shopping, too. With an indoor amusement park, it’s the perfect activity for any weather.

Then hit the road! Next stop: Northwestern Iowa. Stop in Estherville, Iowa for a rustic winery , experience an 80-year old swinging bridge or to visit the site of the largest known meteorite seen crashing into North America.

You could stay in Esterville for the night, or head about half an hour west to Lake Okoboji. In Okoboji, Iowa you’ll find shopping, dining and a bunch of water activities , of course! Try the Arnold’s Park Amusement Park or live music after a day on the water.

Next on this Midwest road trip is Sioux City, Iowa. Grab lunch or dinner at the Fourth Street Historic District in downtown Sioux City , catch a show at the Orpheum Theatre or visit Palmer’s Old Tyme Candy Shoppe for a sweet treat before leaving town.

Omaha, Nebraska is the final destination on this Midwest road trip itinerary. You’ll want to spend 1-2 days visiting this fun city. Omaha is known as the silicone prarie, a tech hub that’s family-friendly, yet trendy enough to support a vibrant art scene and plenty of outdoor space.

One of the best things to do in Omaha is to visit the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium , It’s the largest tourist attraction in the state, and regularly competes with the San Diego Zoo as the #1 zoo in the country! It really is that fantastic!

Check out North America’s largest indoor rain forest, feed the giraffes, walk under sharks in the aquarium and watch the animals in the world’s largest indoor desert dome. Tip: be sure to buy your tickets in advance online and arrive early to avoid the crowds as best as you can.

Get a good tour of the city while taking fun photos at the most Instagrammable places in Omaha . Spend some time wandering the Lauritzen Gardens or check out the Fun-Plex Waterpark.

For some mystery check out the Joslyn Castle , and for some history visit the Lewis and Clark Landing. The Old Market in downtown is the perfect spot to grab a bite to eat after a long day touring the city.

Duluth to Grand Marais, Minnesota

lake superior road trip

Recommended trip: 1-2 days

A Minnesota road trip on Highway 61 between Duluth and Grand Marais will offer you amazing views of Lake Superior, numerous options for a delicious bite to eat, and some can’t miss attractions .

As you leave Duluth, choose the 24-mile scenic route to Two Harbors, and take in the view of Lake Superior along the way. In Two Harbors you can walk along the breakwater to the lighthouse, and watch the ore ships coming and going. Enjoy a local brew at Castle Danger Brewery after doing some shopping in Agate Bay.

Just north of Two Harbors is Betty’s Pies and you don’t want to miss stopping here ! This is a full service restaurant, but they also have a walk up counter where you can order their famous pie. The pie flavors change every day, but you definitely want to try the Great Lakes Fruit Pie . This pie is filled with blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, apples, and rhubarb and it is one of a kind.

It is 11 miles to the next stop, in Castle Danger, but get your camera ready because you’ll be driving through 2 large tunnels, and the exits of both perfectly frame Lake Superior.

Castle Danger is home to Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock Lighthouse State Parks. You can learn a little history of the area while touring the lighthouse and take a hike down the hillside to dip your toes in the cool Lake Superior water.

Gooseberry Falls State Park has 5 waterfalls that you can hike to, and a very nice visitor center to buy some souvenirs at.

Along the remaining 72 miles to Grand Marais, take the time to stop at a beach or two to hunt for agates. The beaches along the North Shore are loaded with agates and it’s fun to find a few to bring home.

The city of Grand Marais has a main street full of local shops that ends on the shore of Lake Superior.  The beach is a popular spot to watch the water, and to eat a delicious donut from World’s Best Donuts or maybe you’ll want a slice of thin crust pizza from Sven and Ole’s.

Grand Marais is also the start of the Gunflint Trail. This is a 57-mile paved roadway that ends in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area near the border of Ontario.

This 110 mile road trip between Duluth and Grand Marais can be made in one day, but why not take your time and really discover the beauty of Lake Superior and the North Shore.

Midwest road trip: Missouri Route 66

Missouri Route 66 road trip

While most people think of a  Route 66  Road Trip as starting in Chicago and ending in Santa Monica, you don’t need to take two weeks and traverse half the country to get in a taste of the Mother Road. Instead, you can pick a portion and explore it in-depth.

Missouri has a great stretch of Route 66 right here in the Midwest. It starts in the northeast crossing over from Illinois into St. Louis and ends at the Oklahoma border after passing through Joplin.

Obviously the most iconic site on Missouri’s portion of Route 66 is the Gateway Arch, which practically welcomes you onto the road. Make sure to tour Meramec Caverns , see the one-room jail in Cuba, and explore the interesting history of Carthage.

Take advantage of the fun roadside kitsch of the route and get out at as many stops as you can. A real Route 66 road trip means you need to spend a few nights in the state’s retro motels and enjoy some diners and dive bars.

Madison to Spring Green, Wisconsin

Madison WI road trip Midwest

One of the most exciting small cities in the Midwest is  Madison, Wisconsin . It has a wonderful dining scene and miles of shoreline and bike trails.

A culmination of a college-town and a bustling city, Madison is also home one of America’s most beloved architects: Frank Lloyd Wright. Wright used Madison and its neighborhoods as a canvas, where visitors can see his many designs come to life. Although several of Madison’s Wright-designed houses are private residences, designs like the First Unitarian Meeting Houses and Monona Terrace are must-see spots for any architectural buffs! Both buildings are just a short 10-minute drive away.

If you want to see more of the city’s art scene , visit either the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art or the Chazen Museum of Art! Both museums boast both Wisconsin-based artists, as well as international artists too. Furthermore, admission is free for adults, making this the perfect stop for anyone that loves to travel on a budget.

While you’re in Madison we also highly recommend grabbing tacos from Matthew Danky and his exciting outpost El Grito Tacqueria.

From Madison, drive about 40 minutes to the quaint town of New Glarus , Wisconsin. The main attraction here is New Glarus Brewing, one of the most highly regarded breweries by beer snobs across the country so make sure to spend a few hours there.

New Glarus also has rich Swiss heritage. Explore and find an authentic Swiss bakery or locally made raclette and cheese fondue.

Our last stop is very enjoyable Spring Green, an hour away down winding country roads.  Frank Lloyd Wright spent the better part of his life living and working in Spring Green and maintained a school at Taliesin. Wright’s students designed many unique buildings in and around Spring Green.

Awesome. I'm wanting to take a scenic drive from Kansas to Ohio, off the beaten path. What are your recommendations?

Sunday 26th of September 2021

Where in Kansas and Ohio? I've spent time in Kansas City and St. Louis which may be along the way, but aren't necessarily off the beaten path. Perhaps a bit more southern, I've heard the Mark Twain National Forest and Shawnee National Forest are both gorgeous! Otherwise I've recently spent time in Sandusky Ohio, Put-in-Bay Ohio and the Lake Erie area. I'm sorry, I'm not sure I have a whole lot of suggestions for that specific route since I haven't personally done it. Best of luck on your road trip!

You're so welcome, Pamela!

You missed a Gem of the Midwest. Part of the Driftless region on NE Iowa you need to check out the town of Decorah and the area around it. River bluffs, water falls, bike trails, 3 award winning breweries, big Scandinavian culture and museum.

Wednesday 26th of August 2020

Great suggestion! I've heard of Decorah but have never been!

Oh very cool! What a small world, Christa! My pleasure to feature it. :)

’24 Mid-Ohio Hoosier Super Tour: At A Glance

The 2024 Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA® Super Tour season is, believe it or not, beginning to wind down. The Super Tour at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, taking place May 17-19, 2024, is stop eight of 10 on the schedule, leaving just Watkins Glen and Road America to go.

But that’s OK, because Mid-Ohio’s going to be a big one.

This is the first stop at Mid-Ohio since the 2020 season (and we’ve all agreed that the year 2020 didn’t actually happen, right?). SCCA’s Ohio Valley Region is ready for the action, and at press time, there were more than 240 entries on the list. So let’s get down to business as SCCA pulls on site with its Bravo trailer.

But before we jump in, if you’re a racer who wants to add to the driver tally, register now .

It’s a Course, For Sports Cars

It’s no coincidence that it’s the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, and not Mid-Ohio Speedway or Mid-Ohio Race Track.

Mid-Ohio’s history coincides significantly with the Sports Car Club of America. Les Griebling started the track as an SCCA member in 1962 and built it from a nice little layout in rural north-central Ohio to a can’t-miss stop for professional road racers. It took another leap forward in 1982 when it was purchased by two-time Runoffs® champ (amongst a whole list of other accomplishments) Jim Trueman.

Under the Trueman family, the track reached its potential. A regular stop on the IndyCar circuit, sports cars remained at its heart. Can-Am, Trans Am, and others were regulars there; the Runoffs even made what was then an almost unimaginable move from Road Atlanta to Mid-Ohio for a spectacular 12-year run.

What’s a Buckeye?

Racers tend to develop where there’s opportunity. There are oval tracks and racers all around Indiana who have wanted to make it over to the Speedway for more than 100 years. Wisconsin has what seems like a disproportionately high concentration of road racers for its population, and that’s because Road America is a hometown hero.

Mid-Ohio fits that same scenario. From Chardon to Cincinnati and all points in between, Ohioans are registered for this weekend’s Super Tour – 52 entries, in fact, come from the 17 th state in the Union.

So what’s a Buckeye, anyway? Well, it’s a poisonous nut – so don’t eat one. But if you find the chocolate and peanut butter candy on your visit, pick up a batch of those.

Local Knowledge Matters

Mid-Ohio’s Runoffs history was dotted by people who lived and breathed the racetrack. Of course, it’s possible for an out-of-towner to win there, but that local knowledge seems very important.

One of the ways that those visitors earned knowledge, both back in the Runoffs days and now, is through the Mid-Ohio School. But if you’re really interested in building your local knowledge, you could always become an instructor at the school instead.

That list of instructors is an impressive one. Brian Till, Calvin Fish, Andy Lally, Tommy Byrne, Paul Dallenbach, and many, many more have all called the school home in the past and present.

In fact, three of those instructors are on the entry list at this year’s Mid-Ohio Super Tour.

Max Gee, the 2016 Runoffs silver medalist at Mid-Ohio and the 2017 champ at Indy, both in STU, is taking on the STL field at Mid-Ohio. The Bellville native has grown up around the track and has to be the favorite in the 13-car field.

In the same run group, turn your attention to John Schmitt in STU. Schmitt is a fellow instructor and, obviously, knows the track well.

Speaking of growing up at the track, Aaron Quine visited the track in diapers while his father raced, took over his Corvette when he was of age, and now races a Camaro of his own in GT-2. Quine is an instructor at the school, running full circle now that he’s crossed the half-century mark in age.

Discover who else is there by perusing the event’s entry list .

Tune In (and Tune Out of Everything Else)

Can’t make it to Mid-Ohio? You don’t have to miss a thing.

As with every event on SCCA’s Hoosier Super Tour, you can log in from home on SCCA.com , on SCCA’s YouTube channel , or on SCCA Road Racing’s Facebook page during the May 17-19 weekend – then kick back and enjoy all of the qualifying and racing action from DriversEye Live. Gregg Ginsberg and Brian Bielanski are once again on the call, with help from their team of associate producers pointing out information through the YouTube chat.

The event schedule will tell you when to tune in .

Neil Young reunites with Crazy Horse after a decade, performs double encore

mid tour

On Thursday night, magic happened in Tennesseee.

Singer-songwriter Neil Young and rock band Crazy Horse came together to perform their hits over a two-hour show at FirstBank Amphitheater on their first tour together in a decade.

The 2024 "Love Earth Tour" features the now 78-year-old singer alongside the Los Angeles rock band yet again.

Canadian singer-songwriter Young, best known for songs "Heart of Gold," "Harvest Moon" and "Old Man," released the album "Fu##in' Up" with Crazy Horse on April 25, featuring nine rock 'n' roll tracks. The two have released 15 studio albums together.

Young and Crazy Horse kicked off their brief 16-stop tour on April 24 in San Diego and will continue with upcoming stops in Virginia, New Jersey, New York and more.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Thursday's concert in Franklin was originally slated for Wednesday evening, but was postponed by a day due to  inclement weather .

But Thursday night brought the calm after the storm; the evening was serene.

Neil Young returns to Spotify after 2-year hiatus following Joe Rogan controversy

After opener Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping , a musical performance art experience that draws from religion, Young hit the stage.

The set-up featured a backdrop with a galloping horse and giant speaker cabinets and road cases, the same ones Young took on the road with him for his "Rust Never Sleeps" tour in 1978.

Young appeared in a striped cap, a denim work shirt that featured paint splatters and a Spartan Truck Equipment patch, black pants, black shoes and of course, his guitar, Old Black .

He mentioned the venue's beauty multiple times — a stage nestled in the woods of Graystone Quarry in Thompson’s Station.

"How you doin out there? Nice to see you," Young said to the Franklin crowd.

"What a beautiful place. You guys are very lucky to have this place."

Alongside Young was the band, comprised of 80-year-old Billy Talbot on bass and 80-year-old Ralph Molina on drums. They also have a new member, Micah Nelson on guitar.

Nelson, Willie Nelson 's 33-year-old son, took over for the band's previous guitarist Nils Lofgren earlier this year.

Throughout the show, Neil Young and the band played a 17-song set, full with jam sessions and occasional harmonies. Young was energized and playful, captivating the crowd with his trademark nasally, emotional voice.

The set list was mostly comprised of older hits, like 1969's "Cinnamon Girl" and 1972's "Heart of Gold."

The band didn't play any songs from their recent album; the most recent song was 1996's "Scattered (Let's Think About Livin')." Nelson's big moment came during the tune; he traded his guitar to play a swinging keyboard that descended from the ceiling.

Young's guitar playing—both electric and acoustic—was adept and agile. Though Young shared in January he has been playing guitar with arthritis in his hand for years, audience members wouldn't have guessed.

He played the blues on song "Vampire Blues," hitting guitar licks with a precision like Stevie Ray Vaughan's. He also performed drawn-out, warping guitar solos on songs like "Like a Hurricane" and "Powderfinger."

Between songs, Young would hand his guitar off to his techs (who all wore white lab coats), but was audibly uncomfortable until he had a guitar in his arms yet again.

The night's concert walked the line between a Young that leaned into classic, grunge rock 'n' roll with Crazy Horse and a Young that gently cooed with Crosby, Stills & Nash in '69, strumming an acoustic.

Young pulled off the balancing act.

Here are some of the top moments from the night.

Neil Young opens with 'Cortez the Killer,' sings newly released verse

On a purple-lit stage, Neil Young and Crazy Horse kicked off the show with the 1975 song "Cortez the Killer."

The first lyrics from Young brought cheers from the audience as he sang, "He came dancing across the water / With his galleons and guns."

Young surprised fans at the first concert of the tour by singing unreleased lyrics to the song, ones he said did not record due to a power outage on the recording console in 1975.

Young found the lyric manuscript, he said in an interview mid-April this year.

The verse was lost for nearly 50 years. Young sang the verse again in Franklin.

“I floated on the water / I ate that ocean wave / Two weeks after the slaughter/ I was living in a cave / They came too late to get me / But there’s no one here to set me free / From this rocky grave / To that snowed-out ocean wave.”

Neil Young calls on local non-profits to support his eco-friendly mission

Neil Young has been vocal about his environmental efforts throughout his career .

In 1985, Young helped establish the annual Farm Aid concerts . In 2022, he released album "World Record," an album that focuses on climate change. Later that year, Young said he refused to play venues that are supported by factory farms .

The environmentalism was felt at his Franklin show.

Upon entering the concert, fans saw a series of tents and tables from local environmental organizations all hand picked by Young, including Tennessee Local Food . The organizations attended the concert and chatted with fans about their missions.

Young calls it the "LOVE EARTH Village."

At different stops on the tour, hundreds of non-profits working for sustainability and social equity will join to chat about issues like organic farming, wildlife protection, Native American rights and climate change solutions.

According to a venue employee, Young also changed the menu for the venue's offerings on Thursday, opting for more eco-friendly options (Coke products were nowhere to be seen).

On a handout at the venue, Young wrote, "Support your friends, support your land, and support the people that want to care for the land.

"The revolution starts with us. The revolution starts with you."

Neil Young goes acoustic mid-show, takes stage alone

At one point, Young took an empty stage, traded Old Black for an acoustic, and donned the harmonica around his neck.

He sang songs, "Comes a Time," "Heart of Gold" and "Human Highway" onstage alone, leaning into his folk singer-songwriter roots.

Despite the occasional hoot or holler in the audience, a hush crept over the amphitheater as Young sang, played plucky guitar and showcased his harmonica skills between verses.

It was a gentler, softer and more intimate side to the evening.

"Heart of Gold" stood out among the acoustic section.

Young sang his biggest hit: "Keep me searching / For a heart of gold / I've been a miner / For a heart of gold."

An encore and...another encore

Before the encore, Young ended his set with song "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)," leaving the audience with the classic and singing, "Hey hey, my my / Rock and roll can never die."

And it didn't die just then, Young and the band returned to the stage to play "Roll Another Number (For the Road)" as their encore.

After the song finished, the audience didn't stop cheering. Young and company came back to deliver a second encore, this time three songs long.

For encore two, they performed "Danger Bird," "Don't Cry No Tears" and "Sedan Delivery," ending the night on a grungy rock 'n' roll note that included pink lights and plenty of reverb.

Afterwards, the band and Young gathered arm-in-arm in a single spotlight and gave their final bow.

Taylor Swift unveils new ‘Tortured Poets Department’ outfits at Eras Tour in Paris

Just call it tortured couture.

Following a two-month break, Taylor Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour resumed in Paris, France, on Thursday — and along with adding several songs from her latest album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” to the already-sprawling setlist, the superstar treated lucky ticket holders to some fresh fashion, too.

Swift performed new tunes “But Daddy I Love Him,” “So High School,” “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?,” “Down Bad” and “Fortnight” wearing a white taffeta dress with a corseted bodice, dramatic hip draping and her own lyrics (“I love you, it’s ruining my life”) scrawled down the high-low skirt — a custom design by Vivienne Westwood, as the brand confirmed to Page Six Style.

Taylor Swift performing

She accessorized with one of the house’s signature three-row Orb chokers ($720) and, before launching into “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived,” topped off her gown with a matching white trench coat featuring military-style epaulettes and frogging.

Swift then switched things up with an on-stage costume change, stripping down to a second Vivienne Westwood ensemble: a black crystal-embellished bra top and briefs, which she layered beneath a metallic gold tailcoat with black crystal-embellished lapels to close out the “TTPD” section with “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart.”

Taylor Swift performing

The new costumes are perfectly in line with the literature-inspired looks Swift’s been exploring while promoting “TTPD” — think corsets, pleated skirts and plenty of black and white .

“There’s definitely a ‘literary academia’ style that’s going on,” Taylor Swift Style blogger Sarah Chapelle told Page Six Style last month. “The [visuals] are telling a very cohesive story, which is clearly pointing to being inspired by female poets of the past.”

The “Black Dog” singer collaborated with a number of major fashion houses on her stage styles for the Eras Tour, all of which are inspired by her past album aesthetics .

Taylor Swift performing

Standouts include the bedazzled Atelier Versace bodysuits Swift wears during the “Lover” section of her performance, the sparkling Roberto Cavalli crop-top-and-miniskirt combos she sports for the “1989” segment and the flowing, fluttering Alberta Ferretti gowns that add ethereal drama to the “Folklore” portion of the show.

And given that the aforementioned brands provided several different color variations of each look for Swift to rotate between as her tour rolls on, additional “TTPD” costumes are practically guaranteed to pop up at the shows ahead.
