17. Bab Mansour Gate

Adorned in colorful mosaic tiles and inscribed with Arabic poems, the Bab Mansour is more than just a gate. It also happens to be one of the most ornate symbols of Morocco and an icon of classic Moroccan architecture. Completed in 1732, the Bab Mansour Gate guards the front of the Place El Hedim, a large square in the heart of old town Meknes .

Although you cannot walk through the grand doors of the gate, you can still admire its beauty from the square. One of the most notable features is the Arabic poem written over the arch. It translates to “I am the most beautiful gate in Morocco. I’m like the moon in the sky. Property and wealth are written on my front.”

Tucked away in a small Berber village between Marrakech and the Sahara Desert is Telouet Kasbah. Built in the 18th and 19th centuries for the powerful El Glaoui family, Telouet Kasbah is a rare sight to behold. Adorned in colorful mosaics and red stucco, the kasbah had a strategic location on the caravan trail.

As one of the country’s most prominent figures, El Glaoui made a lot of money off olive, saffron, and salt trades from the kasbah. However, the rise of Moroccan independence proved difficult for the family, and El Glaoui was killed in 1953. The kasbah was eventually abandoned and sits in ruins today.

The lush, cascading waterfalls of Ouzoud are a must-see during your trip to Morocco. Located near the Moyen Atlas village, the Cascades d’Ouzoud is a collection of several waterfalls that flow into the El-Abid River gorge.

It was also constructed with materials from other buildings, including the Koutoubia Mosque, the Dome of the Rock, and the Great Mosque of Damascus.

However, its most striking feature is the 690-foot minaret. Not only is it decorated in chrome, green, and blue tiles, but it’s also retrofitted with a laser beam, which shines in the direction of Mecca.

Essaouria is a popular resort town located just a few hours from Marrakech. Marked by its white and blue medina and colorful seaside port, Essaouira is a relaxing escape from the hustle of the larger cities in Morocco. As the largest erg in all of Morocco, Erg Chigaga is exactly what you imagine when you think of a desolate desert. With orange, rolling dunes as far as the eye can see, it’s completely isolated from any villages or towns. If you’re planning a visit, it’s recommended to go with a guide, as the dunes can only be reached with an off-roading vehicle or camel.

9. Stay in a Riad

For an authentic Moroccan experience, skip the big chain hotels and stay in a local riad. These traditional style guesthouses can be found all over the country and are known for having beautifully decorated inner courtyards and gardens.

Many riads are still run by local families, although some of them have been converted into boutique hotels. Your overnight accommodation will probably include breakfast, which will be served in the courtyard or on the rooftop terrace – if your riad is lucky enough to have one.

7. Volubilis

The archeological site of Volubilis was once the capital of the Mauretania Kingdom, which ruled from 27 BC to 44 AD. Many of the buildings and landmarks in the city are pristine examples of the Roman Empire’s influence on urban modernization.

The fertile lands of the province produced many commodities such as grain and olive oil, which were exported to Rome, contributing to the province’s wealth and prosperity. The Romans evacuated most of Morocco at the end of the 3rd century AD but people continued to live in Volubilis for many centuries.

Only half of the city has been excavated; however, its most notable buildings include the basilica, Capitoline Temple, and the triumphal Arch of Caracalla. Several private dwellings, including elaborate elite mansions, are also on display.

6. Aït-Benhaddou

The earthy clay brick buildings of Aït-Benhaddou are nestled at the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. This fortified walled city was built right on the caravan path between Marrakech and the Sahara and was once a thriving trading post during the 17th century.

Only a handful of residents live within the city walls; however, it still attracts thousands of annual visitors, who come to admire Aït-Benhaddou’s distinctive and authentically Moroccan clay buildings.

5. Todra Gorge

There are many beautiful sites along the Atlas Mountains, including the Todra Gorge. With orange towering cliffs, the canyons of Todra Gorge are almost 1,000 feet deep. While the Dades River no longer runs through it, it still carved one of the most spectacular landscapes in all of Morocco.

Come for a trek along the dried-up riverbed or for sunrise to photograph the golden, sweeping views. Rock climbers can also trek up the canyon walls, as there are over 150 bolts along the gorge.

4. Tanneries in Fez

Avid shoppers will inevitably have heard of Fez , Morocco’s second-largest city known for its leather tanneries. Not only will you be able to buy a variety of products like purses, shoes, and furniture, but you’ll also be able to see how the leather is dyed.

There are several tanneries located throughout the city, many of which are affiliated with specific shops. The dying process has remained the same over the past few centuries. You’ll see workers dying the leather in giant stone wells that are filled with different liquids and colors.

3. Chefchaouen

Chefchauouen is easily one of the most unique cities to visit in Morocco. Situated in the Rif Mountains, this unusual village is home to hundreds of blue homes and buildings. As you walk down the cobblestone alleys (most of which are also blue), you’ll be submerged in a world of color.

Come with a camera, because photography opportunities are everywhere you look. You can also stop by the walled Place Outa el Hammam and the Chefchouen Ethnographic Museum.

It is a popular shopping destination offering many native handicrafts that are not available elsewhere in Morocco, such as wool garments and woven blankets. The goat cheese native to the area is also popular with tourists. The region around Chefchaouen is one of the main producers of cannabis in Morocco. Hashish is subsequently sold all over town, but is mostly the domain of native Chaouenis.

2. Erg Chebbi

Make your way into the Sahara Desert and set your eyes on the bright orange dunes of Erg Chebbi. It’s relatively close to the city of Merzouga, which makes for an easy overnight trip for those coming from Marrakech.

Despite Erg Chebbi being completely desolate and bare, there is still a surprising amount of activities to do. Go camel trekking at sunrise, sandboarding down the sandy slopes, or take a 4×4 quad tour at full speed through the dunes.

Sitting at the heart of Marrakesh’s medina is Djemaa El Fna, the city’s largest square and market. At all times of day, you’ll find Djemaa El Fna filled with tourists, locals, shopkeepers, and food vendors. You might even spot a few snake charmers and monkey handlers eagerly waiting to take your photo.

As the sun goes down, Djemaa El Fna becomes even more lively. Food stalls pop up around the square, and magicians, dancers, and musicians come out to entertain the guests all night long. Even if you aren’t hungry or in the mood for shopping, you can still soak in the magically vibrant atmosphere that pulsates through Djemaa El Fna.

The most visited city in Morocco, Marrakech is a bustling hub of travellers and locals alike.

Try to avoid this mess and venture to other areas of Marrakech for a better experience. 

Visit Saadien’s Tombs for 70 Dirhams and marvel at the intricate artwork and design that adorns the tombs of the Moroccan Saadien Dynasty from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Afterward, stroll through the local street market on Derb Demnat Street and indulge in fresh dates, cactus fruits and juicy peaches.

Sip mint tea in a cafe, browse through unique natural remedies in a herbal medicine shop, and enjoy the artwork in the Museum of Photography . 

Marrakech is the perfect gateway into Moroccan culture so it’s a great first stop for travellers.

For anyone travelling to Morocco from southern Spain, this is the first Moroccan city you will experience.

Located on the Strait of Gibraltar, Tangier is a good transition city between Europe and Africa.

It is a port city on the water, but the beaches aren’t as nice as others in Morocco.

So travellers to Tangier should focus more on the historical and cultural aspects of the city.

Located on the Mediterranean Sea, Al Hoceima is the perfect beach getaway for those travelling through the north of Morocco.

The Spanish helped to develop the city in the early 1900s, and nowadays Al Hoceima serves as an important port town and has a thriving fishing industry. 

The beaches here are some of the nicest and cleanest in the country.

Quemado Beach is just a short walk from the city centre. Calabonita Beach is known for its crystal clear, turquoise water.

Other lovely beaches in the area include Thara Youssef, Sfiha, Matadero, and Souani. 

Al Hoceima is also situated on the northern edge of the Rif Mountains, so there are lots of rugged cliffs to enhance the scenery.

Al Hoceima National Park has lots of opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and admiring the dramatic, seemingly untouched natural beauty. 

This lesser-known Moroccan coastal city is ideal for surfers and beach bums.

Safi isn’t very touristy, which is great for experiencing the local culture.

The Medina is full of shops selling gorgeous ceramics and traditional cafes selling fresh sardines, sugary mint teas and hearty tagines. 

The Main Beach consists of a massive stretch of golden sand framed by a long sidewalk and hipster cafes.

During winter, the waves attract surfers from all over the globe, and all year round the water is cold and refreshing.

Drive about 15 minutes north of Safi Main Beach to Lalla Fatna Beach for a more secluded sunbathing spot.

You will notice at the beaches that most local women dress conservatively.

If you are a woman, there are no concrete rules as to what you can and can’t wear at the beach.

But you may choose to cover up as much as possible to blend in with the locals and show respect for their culture.

Asilah is a cultural melting pot residing on the Atlantic Ocean, making it one of the best places to visit in Morocco.

Here you can find fortifications built by the Portuguese, an Old Town with Spanish influence, and whitewashed buildings that resemble those of Greece.

A trip to Morocco would be incomplete without exploring the breathtaking Atlas Mountain Range.

Many people view Morocco as hot and arid. But at the high altitudes of the Atlas you can find cooler temperatures and sometimes even snow. 

The Atlas Mountains are full of little Berber villages and towns, but Imlil makes a great starting point for adventures into the area.

Imlil is easily accessible from Marrakech by a shared taxi. And you will find that there are a few cheap hostels and lots of nice guesthouses for travelers. 

From Imlil you can begin the multi-day trek to the summit of Mount Toubkal , the highest mountain in northern Africa.

There are also many day hikes in Toubkal National Park available from Imlil, including a circuit around the hills of the village and a full day hike to a waterfall.

Whether you choose a few shorter hikes or one long trek, you are guaranteed to find majestic mountain peaks, tiny remote villages with friendly locals, and lots of wildlife including sheep, donkeys and goats. 

Asni is another nearby village to Imlil, which is a bit smaller and less touristy.

You can also use this town as a base for hiking Toubkal National Park.

Oukaimeden is another popular destination in the Atlas Mountains, as it is one of the few skiing destinations in Morocco. 

On the drive into the mountains from Marrakech, you will most likely travel along the Tizi n’ Tichka Pass , which is a heart-stopping, winding road slicing straight through the cliffs.

Located in between the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert, many desert tours pass through here on the way to the Sahara.

While staying in Marrakech, escape the city and venture to Ouzoud Waterfalls.

This area is very remote and there is no direct public transport from Marrakech, so the easiest option is to book a day tour.

For about 200-250 Dirhams, you can book a day trip with any of the countless tour agencies in Marrakech, and you’ll get round-trip transportation in a comfy minivan. 

This is a full-day adventure, as the drive takes about 3 hours each way and you’ll have a few hours to relax at the falls.

Once you step off the bus, a local will try to convince you to pay for a guided tour.

This isn’t necessary as it’s very easy to explore the falls yourself. 

The waterfalls are simply stunning, with multiple huge cascades thundering town towards the El-Abid River Gorge.

Stairs lead up and down the canyon of the falls so you can walk to the bottom and swim in the little pools at the base of the falls.

The same stairs lead up to a lookout point, where you can take in the view of the whole waterfall and watch the adorable Barbary Monkeys swing in the trees.

There is certainly no shortage of great attractions in Morocco. The country enjoys a strong sense of culture and a long and ancient history. There is a never-ending list of Moroccan attractions for the average visitor to enjoy and you will really need to do your homework to ensure that you make the most of your travels in this vast and varied country. The main starting points are the more popular cities such as Marrakech, Tangier, Fes and Casablanca. At each of these places, you will find the usual hodgepodge mixture of medinas, bazaars and riads . You will also find superb beaches and classy hotels where a hubbly-bubbly pipe may be arranged with relative ease. All these things are an essential part of the Moroccan experience and should not be missed. There are also a number of excellent attractions in Morocco that a visitor should definitely make the effort to see.

Asilah : Believed to have initially been constructed by the Phoenicians as a trade post around 1500 B.C., and serving as home to a procession of conquerors thereafter, even being a haven to pirates at one time in its history, the seaside resort of Asilah (or Arzila) boasts well preserved gates and ramparts as a reminder of its colorful past. All development at this popular tourist destination has been carried out in such a way as to blend-in with, and complement, its ancient structures and visitors are assured of a warm welcome by the friendly locals.

Bab Rouah : As one of five gates that once served as entrances to the city of Rabat, Bab Rouah was built in 1197 and is a key historical attraction. Although being immense in size, Bab Rouah is superbly decorated in intricate designs. Once through the gates, visitors will have the opportunity to explore the rooms, including the Bab Rouah gallery which focuses on displaying the works of Moroccan artists.

Boulaouane Kasbah : Located just south of the city of Casablanca this majestic Kasbah was built as a fortress overlooking the Wadi Oum er-Rbia River in 1710. Visitors who take the long winding stairway to the top of the Kasbah’s ten meter high tower will be rewarded with an awe-inspiring view of the surrounding area. The interior of the Kasbah is a treasure trove of beautifully detailed mosaic designs and other decorations.

Citadel of Chellah Gardens : Located in Morocco’s capital city, Rabat, the Chellah Gardens are expertly landscaped to display hundreds of flowers which come into bloom in Morocco’s spring season creating a richly colored palette. The entrance to the gardens is through a skilfully crafted door inscribed with Arabesque calligraphy and within the grounds of the gardens visitors will come across Roman ruins and elaborate tombstones.

El Bahia Palace : Located in Marrakech, this richly adorned building is a superb example of 19th century Eastern Architecture. Believed to have been built as a home for Ahmed Ibn Moussa’s concubines, the palace features 160 different rooms including lavishly decorated private quarters, reception rooms and courtyards with fountains and gardens.

Mohamed V Mausoleum : This architectural and historical masterpiece is the final resting place of three significant members of Morocco’s royal family, including King Mohamed V. Visitors will appreciate the skilful workmanship in the construction and decoration of this mausoleum in Rabat which took a workforce of about four hundred men around nine years to complete.

Saadian Tombs : Dating back to the 16th century, the Saadian Tombs situated just outside Marrakech are the burial ground for around 200 members of the Saadian dynasty, including Sultan Ahmed el Mansour who was buried there in 1603. The tombs were sealed by a subsequent ruler and remained sealed until being discovered by General Hubert Lyautey in 1917 who set about restoring and preserving them as an important part of Morocco’s history.

Mamora Forest : Located in the vicinity of Rabat , the Mamora Forest includes vast numbers of cork trees, along with pine groves, wild pear trees and eucalyptus trees. The forest is a haven for a wide variety of bird and animal life and is a popular hiking spot for nature lovers.

Friouato Caves : As the largest known cave system in Northern Africa, the Friouato Caves near the town of Taza attract visitors from far and wide. Guided tours take visitors down a hundred meter shaft in order to gain access to several large chambers with breath-taking rock formations, stalactites and stalagmites.

Menara Gardens : Located in Marrakech the Menara Gardens is like an oasis in the busy city. Originally built in the 12th century, the gardens feature orchards of palm trees, fruit trees and olive trees, as well as irrigation canals and an artificial lake. The pavilion overlooking the lake offers a beautiful view of the gardens and the snowcapped Atlas Mountains in the distance.

From golden sand dunes to the lofty peaks of the High Atlas mountains, Morocco is an adventurer's dream. Epic landscapes carpet this slice of North Africa like the richly patterned rugs you’ll lust after in the souqs. 

On lower ground, windswept coastlines, waterfalls and caves are tucked into forested hills and verdant palm oases. Here are Morocco’s top 10 natural wonders.

Erg Chebbi 

Shape-shifting over 17 miles from north to south and reaching heights of 525 feet, the great sand sea of Erg Chebbi is extraordinarily scenic. The rose-gold dunes rise dramatically above a pancake-flat, grey hamada (hard-packed rocky desert) and turn stunning shades of orange, pink and purple as the sun sets.

Plage Sauvage 

Two-and-a-half miles south of Mirleft is this truly wild beach, accessible down a set of steps, featuring caves, cliffs and crashing waves great for surfing. There's an outpost of Spot-M here for board and wetsuit rental, and Biscou Surf School also brings students here. But the beach is gorgeous and the ocean relatively mild, whether or not you're riding a board.

High Atlas Mountains 

Welcome to North Africa’s highest mountain range, known by Imazighen (Berbers) as “Idraren Draren” (Mountains of Mountains), and a trekker’s paradise from spring to autumn. The range runs diagonally across Morocco for almost 625 miles, encircling Marrakesh to the south and east from the Atlantic Coast just north of Agadir to Khenifra in the northeast. Its saw-toothed peaks act as a weather barrier between the mild, Mediterranean climate to the north and the Sahara to the south.

For rafters and kayakers, the valley is a green jewel where rafts whip between 8.3ft-wide limestone walls; for climbers and trekkers, the extreme topography and huge routes offer ridiculous views and a thrilling sense of wilderness.

Jebel Toubkal

For pure mountain air that cuts through the heat and leaves you dizzy, don’t miss the highest mountain in North Africa: snowcapped Jebel Toubkal (13671 ft), situated in the heart of the Toubkal National Park . Mountain trails criss-crossing the range start from Imlil , which is located at the source of the Mizane River.

Erg Chigaga

There's not a single sand dune (erg) found at the misnamed Erg Chigaga, instead, there is an incredible stretch of golden sand sea some 35 miles southwest of M'Hamid. It is the largest sand sea in Morocco, snaking along the horizon for 25 miles and bordered to the north and south by mountain ridges. The best way to get here is in classic movie style: by camel (from Dh500 to Dh600 per day), which takes between five and seven days round-trip.

Gouffre de Friouato

More than 66ft wide and 755ft deep, the Gouffre de Friouato is said to be the deepest cavern in North Africa, and the cave system is possibly the most extensive. It was first investigated in 1935, and access leads down 520 precipitous steps (with handrails) to the floor of the cavern.

Once you reach the bottom of the stairs, you can squeeze through a hole to start exploring the fascinating chambers that are found 200 more steps below. It’s dark and eerily beautiful.

The most spectacular chambers, full of extraordinary formations, are the Salle de Lixus and the Salle de Draperies. They do indeed resemble thin sheets of curtains, frozen and calcified. Speleologists have explored to a depth of 984ft, and they believe there are more rooms another 1640ft below.

Cascades d’Ouzoud

The many-tiered Cascades d’Ouzoud are stunningly beautiful, with several distinct falls, the largest a massive 328ft drop. The area is also one of the most popular day trips from Marrakesh, so be prepared to not have this natural idyll to yourself.

On summer weekends the cafe-lined paths that lead down to the falls are filled with local families and tourists browsing souvenir stalls and taking pictures. To reach the falls, walk past the signs for Riad Cascades d’Ouzoud towards the precipice, where converging paths wind down towards the largest falls and beyond.

Oualidia (wa-lid-ee-ah) is a gorgeous crescent-shaped lagoon fringed with golden sands and protected from the wild surf by a rocky breakwater.

With great fish and seafood – the town is renowned for its oysters – and a range of accommodation options, it's a popular weekend and summer retreat for Marrakshis and Casablancais, and the perfect destination for those in need of a break from the city hubbub.

Outside July and August, it's quiet, with little more to do than relax, surf and gorge on shellfish. In spring and autumn, birdwatchers arrive to observe migrating pink flamingos, terns, egrets and more on the lagoon and surrounding coastal wetlands.

Iriqui National Park

Morocco’s largest national park – covering a landmass of 303,940 acres – and uniquely Saharan, Iriqui was created in 1994 to protect the biodiversity of this wild region of arid savanna, dunes and salt flats and, in particular, the ephemeral wetlands of Lake Iriqui which attracts migratory birds during the winter rainy season. It's around 55 miles of off-road driving from Foum Zguid, but can be visited as part of a tour to or from Erg Chigaga.

Rif Mountains

The Rif  (reef) is the greenest and most northerly of Morocco's mountain chains. It's an excellent place to explore, especially on foot. There are plenty of good hikes, particularly in Talassemtane National Park .

Although we have visited Chauen, FES, and Casablanca, this tour is just bizarre. You will feel as though you are traveling with a member of your family when you request Lahcen to be your driver and guide. He will take you wherever you want to go at your own pace and with such kindness. The hotels and desert camps they reserved for us are all incredible, and the Sahara desert is REAL and AMAZING. It was opulent and yet had the comforts of home. It's hard to find alcohol during Ramadan, but Lahcen managed to locate one for us so we could enjoy our drinks in the dunes. In order to avoid paying exorbitant prices, he also took us to shops frequented by locals. Nevertheless, you still need to bargain and haggle to get the best deal. The entire trip is SAFE, he drives with exceptional skill, and he's hilarious too! Actually, depending on how you speak with him, he may be talkative or quiet. Never gone on a tour with anyone quite like him. He is the BEST, and I assured him that I would travel with him for free if he ever made a trip to the Philippines. The fine, white sand that rims Agadir's shoreline makes it Morocco's best place to visit for vacations all about sun, sand, and sea. For many visitors, the main thing to do here is relax on the beach.

If you want to mix up the sunbathing with some sightseeing, though, Agadir is also a good jumping-off point for day trips and longer journeys to the towns and tourist attractions of the Souss Valley and Anti Atlas regions.

Sticking to the coast, the seafront walled town of Essaouira is also an easy add-on to an Agadir holiday, and the surf village of Taghazout is within day-tripping distance, so there's plenty of things to do away from the sun lounger.

Agadir is all about the beach. This is one of Morocco's prime beach areas , and holidaymakers from across Europe flock here throughout the year to top up their tans.

Summer is high season, as domestic tourists decamp to the Atlantic Coast on holiday to escape the soaring temperatures inland. Many European package tourists also head here in spring and fall when there are still plentiful blue skies and sunny days.

The long strip of Agadir's beach is rimmed by some of Morocco's best beach resorts and a host of facilities, including plenty of cafés and restaurants, as well as sunshades and deckchairs for hire. Many beachfront hotels offer private strips of sand for guests.

North of the center, heading out of the city, just after Agadir's commercial port, Anza Beach is a less bustling alternative to Agadir main beach and is a popular destination for surfers.

Agadir's massive earthquake in 1960 leveled much of the city's historic buildings, leaving the hilltop Agadir Oufella (its kasbah district) as the only proper historic attraction in town.

The kasbah dates from the mid-16th century, when Agadir became an important center of trade. Only the thick and sturdy original ramparts survived but inside, this walled area was once Agadir's fortified town built to defend this sea port against attack.

This entire area is being restored, with a cable car being put in place for ease of access for visitors.

The walls themselves and the gateway are well preserved, and their hillside position provides excellent panoramic views across the sprawl of Agadir town below and the Atlantic coastline beyond.

Come in late afternoon for the best photography conditions.

The modern central core of Agadir has a few interesting monuments that make a nice diversion from sunbathing.

The Grand Mosque is a modernist-style structure and very unique among Morocco's mosques.

For museum sightseeing, the Amazigh Museum (Passage Ait Souss) displays some of Bert Flint's ethnographic collection, in conjunction with the Tiskiwin Museum in Marrakesh . The museum provides a good introduction to the culture and artistry of Morocco's Amazigh (Berber) cultures.

The Agadir Memorial Museum (Avenue President Kennedy) was erected as a memorial to Agadir's tragic 1960 earthquake, which leveled the town, and holds an interesting collection of black and white photographs of Agadir in the early 20th century.

This wildlife reserve, 14 kilometers east of Agadir, is home to Nile Crocodiles, which up to the early 20th century were endemic in Morocco but have since been wiped out by hunting in the wild.

Here, in this park dedicated to safeguarding the crocodiles, you can see and learn about these much-feared beasts up close, in an environment that has been carefully created to mimic their natural habitat.

The park's gardens host a wide and varied range of flora, both local to the Agadir region and exotics, and staff (who give tours of the site) are highly knowledgeable about both the crocodiles and the plants.

Essaouira, 173 kilometers north of Agadir, is one of Morocco's most popular seaside towns. If you're only going to take one day off the beach for a day trip, beeline here to take in its preserved 18th-century seafront fortifications which have been stamped with a UNESCO World Heritage Site listing.

Inside the medina, it's all about aimless strolling while admiring the preserved architecture and browsing the many small art galleries and souq streets selling local handicrafts.

The medina's western wall looms up over the crashing waves of the Atlantic. For the best photos of the ramparts, head to the Skala du Port. This tower sits on the southern edge of the western wall, overlooking Essaouira's fishing harbor.

You come to Essaouira for the atmosphere more than for individual tourist sites, but the Museum of Sidi Mohamed ben Abdullah within the medina is an attraction that is definitely worth checking out.

Located in the former residence of a pasha, the museum houses regional art, a fascinating ethnographic collection, and a history of the local musical traditions.

This pretty gorge, about 60 kilometers north of Agadir, is a great destination to sample a taste of Moroccan rural life.

Day hikes here along marked hiking trails pass by orchards of almond trees and olive trees and small villages along the way, all backed by views of the western edge of the Atlas Mountain peaks rising up in the distance.

Locals come here on weekends to picnic, so for a quieter experience, head to the valley during the weekdays.

It's also a great place to pick up local produce. Plenty of small stalls in villages along the way sell local honey and argan oil.

Inland from Agadir, an 88-kilometer drive east from town, Taroudant is one of the prime historic centers of the Souss Valley, which became a major trans-Saharan trade route town in the 16th century.

The town is enveloped by mammoth rammed-earth fortifications that stretch for over seven kilometers and are studded with impressive defensive gates.

After strolling, or taking a carriage ride , around the walls, many visitors are here to shop amid Taroudant's rambling souq streets. The town is particularly well known for silver jewelry. Souq Arabe is the main area for shoppers.

Taroudant's kasbah district is also worth a wander but expect to get lost amid the tangle of narrow lanes.

Morocco's main surfer hangout, Taghazout is all about the sea, surf, swimming, and sand.

The beach here is very popular with Moroccan tourists during the summer months and can get crammed during this time. Surfing is a year-round activity here but is at its best from October to March.

There are dedicated surf operators offering dedicated surf holiday packages, lessons, and surf board hire, so Taghazout has become a major destination for beginners wanting to learn how to surf.

The town itself is a small, laid-back place, 23 kilometers north of Agadir, so easily visited as a half-day or full-day trip from town.

Amid stunning mountain scenery of pink and orange rocks, Tafroute is the quintessential Moroccan mountain village and a haven for walkers, hikers, climbers, and nature lovers.

This peaceful town is about 166 kilometers southeast of Agadir, in the Ameln Valley of the Anti-Atlas region, surrounded by a landscape of orchards and palm groves bordered by rugged cliffs and mountains.

A visit here makes a great foil to bustling and modern Agadir and allows you to capture a sense of rural Moroccan life.

You can kick back and just enjoy the scenery, or there are endless trekking opportunities for more active travelers.

Don't miss the Gorges of Ait Mansour and the prehistoric rock art near Annameur.

Hot-air ballooning has become more popular in Agadir in recent years, with a couple of ballooning companies now offering visitors the opportunity of bird's-eye vistas over the Souss Valley scenery east from Agadir.

You'll have to be an early riser to participate, as ballooners are picked up before sunrise so that they can travel out to the flight area, outside of the city.

The views are worth the wake-up call, though, with red-tinged arid plains below, rolling out in the distance to the foothills of the southern High Atlas on one side, and the Atlantic Ocean on the other.

Jewelry collectors, you're in luck. Tiznit is one of the best places in Morocco to purchase Berber jewelry, which makes a great and truly unique souvenir of your Moroccan travels.

Located at the end of the Anti-Atlas mountain range, about 97 kilometers south of Agadir, Tiznit is ringed by impressive fortifications that are actually quite young, only built in the 19th century.

Inside the walls, the medina (old town) is a labyrinth of dawdling lanes, with plenty of souq (market) streets selling Tiznit's traditional jewelry, as well as other handicrafts.

Come on a Thursday if you want to experience a slice of local life, as this is Tiznit's weekly market day.

About 65 kilometers south of Agadir, this national park is one of the country's prime bird-watching areas, with plenty of wildlife for keen spotters.

The landscape of Souss-Massa National Park consists of a mix of sand dunes, beaches, and wetlands that trail along the Atlantic coast, stretching across 330 square kilometers.

Some of the birds common to the park area and regularly spotted include pink flamingos, ibis, ducks, doves, herons, cormorants, and sandgrouse. Most nature lovers, though, come here specifically to try and spot the rare and endangered bald ibis, which is endemic here.

The best period to head here for bird spotting is spring and fall.

Luxury Hotels:

• The Sofitel Agadir Thalassa Sea & Spa is a popular five-star resort with plenty of family-friendly contemporary appeal. There's a pretty slice of sand out front, loads of activities aimed specifically at kids, plenty of pools, and a spa.
• Away from the beach, Tikida Golf Palace is one of the most elegant resorts in the Agadir area with lush gardens, a golf course, multiple pools, and rooms exuding regal ambience.

Mid-Range Hotels:

• The well-priced Hotel Timoulay & Spa Agadir is a low-rise, small resort, centered around a palm-tree-shaded pool area, just a short walk to the beach. Spa treatments are available and there is a restaurant on-site.
• Another mid-range option close to the beach (a five-minute walk) is Tildi Hotel & Spa, known for its friendly staff; simple rooms with balconies overlooking the sea or mountains; and huge, lush garden with a massive pool area.

Budget Hotels:

• Hotel Argana is a good budget resort choice, often offering excellent deals. Although it's 300 meters inland from the shore, there's a private beach for guests.
• If you don't mind being away from the beach, Ibis Budget Agadir has modern, minimalist decor; a 24-hour snack bar; off-road parking; and is in a quiet location outside of the town center.
