“Journey stands as a prime example of the truly remarkable things that can be done via this medium.” 10/10 – Giant Bomb “The mechanics are simple, but they establish a direct connection to the heart.” 10/10 – Gamespot “Journey's visual and sound design sets new standards for interactive entertainment. This alone makes it an extraordinary work, but it's the way that these aesthetic elements come together with beautifully subtle direction and storytelling to create a lasting emotional effect that elevates this to one of the very best games of our time.” 10/10 – The Guardian

The New Game From Journey ’s Creators Feels Like A Dream

If Flower and Journey had a baby.

In the new game Sky: Children of the Light e thereal figures prance and soar through gorgeous landscapes and crumbling temples. These characters hold candles and spread light throughout the world. At least, I think that’s what’s going on in ThatGameCompany’s first new game in seven years. It’s abstract.

Suggested Reading

Out now on iOS and coming eventually to Android, Sky: Children of the Light feels like an extension or offshoot of 2012’s transcendent cooperative adventure game, Journey . The player, a titular child of light, is a caped figure who embarks on an adventure across seven fantasy realms, using light to revive fallen stars and reform constellations. Players interact with the world and their fellow players via a series of simple icons and gestures as they work together to solve the game’s puzzles and uncover its mysteries.

Unlike Journey , which limited play to two players at a time, the world of Sky Children of the Light is filled with silent cloaked individuals hopping and flying about. It’s a social game. Players can make friends, who they can see online and meet up for play sessions. The game preserves some of the magical anonymity of Journey’s anonymous co-op partners by having players assign names to their friends. I named my first two friends Steve and Lara. I have no idea what their real names are. Friends can be added via more traditional methods, but there’s something appealing about having a friend list filled with randoms with made-up names.

Gameplay is harder to describe, which is completely by design. As they adventure through the game, players encounter spirits that feed their light and lead them to ancient temples and other mysterious locales. Each area holds some sort of puzzle to solve in order to progress the game’s story. It might be as simple as applying candlelight to a door switch, or as complex as trying to maintain your light while exploring a rainy forest, racing from cover to cover.

The goal in each area is to awaken an ancestral spirit, who teaches the player a new gesture before ascending into the sky to form a constellation. Forming new constellations unlocks new lands to explore.

I’m getting the same sort of feeling playing Sky: Children of the Light as I did playing Journey. I am not sure where I am supposed to go nor what my ultimate goal is, but somehow the game is getting me there. The wind blowing in a certain direction, a light gleaming in the distance or another player anonymously going about their business… these are my guides through these light-hungry landscapes.

(Even the microtransaction store menu is pretty)

Sky: Children of the Light is a free-to-start game. Players can spend money to buy candles to unlock new emotes and character customization items, or they can receive them in-game by playing or receiving gifts from friends. I haven’t felt the need to buy such things. I’ve been too busy just playing and having a good time.

How to start new game plus in Elden Ring, what you keep and what you lose

Here’s what carries over in NG+ — and what doesn’t

by Michael McWhertor

Elden Ring player standing in front of a glowing table inside Roundtable Hold

New game plus is a core component of the FromSoftware “Soulsborne” experience, and Elden Ring is no exception. Playing and replaying games like Elden Ring is crucial to maximizing your character’s potential while facing new, more difficult challenges in a second (or third… or fourth…) playthrough.

In Elden Ring ’s new game plus experience, you’ll start the game fresh, with all bosses and enemies respawned — and they’ll return with more health and deal greater damage. To compensate for these stronger enemies, you’ll retain your character’s level, weapons, summons, spells, and abilities, but you’ll lose some key items and the ability to teleport around the game’s map at Sites of Grace.

New game plus in Elden Ring is worth experiencing when you’re ready for it. For a full explanation of what new game plus in Elden Ring means — including details about how to start new game plus and what carries over in new game plus — check out our guide to what you can expect.

How to start new game plus in Elden Ring (aka “Journey 2”)

Once you’ve defeated Elden Ring ’s final boss and seen one of its six endings , you’ll have the option to continue with your current playthrough — helpful if you want to clean up anything you missed — or begin a new journey. You’ll be presented with the following prompt:

Begin Journey 2? If you do not start over now, you can choose to begin Journey 2 later at the Table of Lost Grace in Roundtable Hold.

If you select “No,” you’ll continue in your original playthrough, where you can explore further and complete any remaining side quests or tasks. When you’re done with everything you’d like to do, you can visit the Roundtable Hold, where you’ll have the option to select “Begin Journey 2” at the Table of Lost Grace.

If you select “Yes” from that prompt or choose “Begin Journey 2” at the Table of Lost Grace, you’ll restart Elden Ring right from the very beginning, at the Chapel of Anticipation, where the Grafted Scion probably killed you in your first boss battle. The good news is that you’re far better equipped to dispose of that boss this time.

Choosing to start your new game plus journey will write to the same save file you’ve been using thus far; the game won’t create a separate save file for you.

What do you keep in Elden Ring new game plus?

A Tarnished stands next to a Site of Grace and looks out on the Elden Tree in a screenshot from the starting area of Elden Ring

In new game plus, you will retain your Tarnished’s current level, any Runes you had when you finished your original playthrough, and much of your inventory: weapons, shields, spells, talismans , consumables, arrows and bolts, upgrade and crafting materials , Remembrances , Spirit Ashes , and Ashes of War. You’ll also keep many key items, like your cookbooks, pots, perfume bottles, crafting kit, Crystal Tears , and Memory Stones.

You also get to keep some important key consumable items, like any Dragon Hearts, Larval Tears , and Stonesword Keys that you had in your inventory at the end of your first playthrough.

Lastly, you’ll retain your view of the game’s map , and the key locations you discovered in your previous playthrough will remain visible.

What you lose in Elden Ring new game plus

The Bell Bearing vendors, Twin Maiden Husks, in Elden Ring

Though you retain the full view of Elden Ring ’s map , you’ll lose access to all the Sites of Grace you visited previously; you’ll need to unlock them all again in your new game plus playthrough. Any unfinished side quests from your previous playthrough will also be reset.

In terms of inventory, you’ll also lose access to key items that are generally part of side quests or game progress. That includes literal keys (like the Academy Glintstone Key and the Dectus Medallion halves ) and items that progress questlines, like the Fingerslayer Blade and Pureblood Knight’s Medal. You’ll also lose Great Runes acquired from boss fights and Mending Runes earned through questlines.

Any Bell Bearings you unlocked or turned in will also disappear, though they’ll be available for purchase through the Twin Maiden Husks’ shop in the Roundtable Hold if you turned them in during your previous playthrough.

Elden Ring new game plus difficulty: How much harder is Elden Ring new game plus?

Godrick the boss of Stormveil Castle in Elden Ring

Just as bosses and questlines reset in Elden Ring ’s new game plus, so do the items in its world. That means you can acquire duplicate versions of weapons from treasure chests and boss battles, allowing you to dual wield your favorites. You’ll also get access to additional Golden Seeds and Sacred Tears , making it easier to upgrade the Crimson and Cerulean Flasks to their full effectiveness.

Enemies may be stronger, but they also drop more runes when you kill them, making it easier to level up your character in a second playthrough. That extra challenge is also part of the fun; enemies that felt nigh-impossible in your first run may feel slightly easier in new game plus, while some will be even harder the second time around.

You’ll also be able to see Elden Ring ’s various endings (and unlock their associated trophies and achievements) in new game plus and subsequent playthroughs (Journey 3, Journey 4, etc.). Here’s how to plan your next journey through the Lands Between if you want to unlock all Elden Ring ’s endings .

Jedi Survivor New Journey + Everything you should know

This guide will cover everything that you get by starting a New Journey+ in Star Wars Jedi Survivor: what items and upgrades you get to keep and what new items you gain!

What is New Journey + and how to unlock it

Finishing a Star Wars game always brings a small sense of fulfillment. Whether because of its incredible story or the challenging gameplay. Many times we want to do another playthrough with options that make it more challenging.

This is what the New Journey+ in Jedi Survivor (or New Game+ as many of us know it) is for. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

After finishing the main story of Jedi Survivor, the New Journey+ option will be available on the menu screen. To play it, you have to pick an existing save where you have completed at least the main story of the game.

This will allow you to play through the game again with most of what you have unlocked and earned from your first playthrough.

What do you carry over into New Journey +

When you start this new adventure, the first thing that you’ll notice in the New Journey+ is that all of your unlocked cosmetics will carry over . Clothes, hairsttles and beards, lightsaber and blaster customizations, and BD-1 parts.

You will also have all skill points that you unlocked reset so you can spend them however you want.

There are some abilities that will be locked until you reach a certain point in the story. You might want to save some points for when more abilities are available.

At the start of New Journey + you will not have access to advanced abilities that Cal learns through the story such as Force Lift and Force Slam. You will also not be able to slide through the green shield barriers as this ability is earned on Jedha when Merrin gives you the relic.

All of these you will earn as you progress through the story of the game. Speaking of story, absolutely every collectible and map upgrade you have unlocked in your first run, will be disabled in New Journey +.

All chests will be open, all seeds you picked up for the garden will carry over and you will not get to pick them up a second time. All map upgrades you have unlocked will carry over as well.

You will keep all of the unlocked Perks. You will be able to replay each puzzle and Force Tear, but you will not be able to collect Stims , Health Upgrades and Force Upgrades . All of these essences will be disabled if you have picked them up during your first run.

Whatever items you have not completed or collected on your first run, they will still be available in New Journey +.

What is new and different in New Journey +

One of the best things about the New Journey+ is the addition of three new Perks. The first one is the Warrior Perk. This one is very simple, it replaces weak enemies with more powerful ones.

You will notice this right from the start. Standard Scout Troopers are replaced with Riot Troopers and Purge Troopers . If you want a more challenging experience, the Warrior perk combined with the next one are definitely for you. The Warrior perk is activated by default when you start New Journey +.

Purity is a perk that increases the damage output of all sources. Cal will two-shot almost any enemy but that goes both ways. This is the closest to a movie experience that you’ll get. Regardless of how big your health bar is, if Cal takes a few shots he is going to succumb.

I tried this perk and it is incredibly fun, a single mistake can prove to be fatal. Every time that an enemy is glowing red you will consider it twice before doing something reckless. This is probably the best way to practice and master your parrying, evading, and deflecting skills on the go.

The last Perk added to the New Journey+ is called Trendsetter. Unlike the other two, this doesn’t affect the difficulty of the gameplay. Every time you die, your appearance will be randomized: hair, beard, clothes, lightsaber, and even BD-1.

After being defeated three times, this is how I looked after each respawn. The game will choose only from the cosmetics you currently have. An interesting thing is that it looks like it tries to pick matching combinations for everything but the lightsaber. If you are into Jedi fashion, don’t worry about not looking good for the occasion.

The best thing about the Warrior, Purity, and Trendsetter perks is that none of them occupy a perk slot. You can equip them all at once and still use your three perk slots or more (if you have unlocked them).

In this image, you can see how I have equipped the Wisdom perk that uses three out of my three slots while still using the New Journey+ perks.

The Party Lightsaber option changes the color of your lightsaber with each attack that you do. It looks good but I would’ve preferred something else like getting the option to have one blue blade and a purple (or any other color). This is a good option if you love all lightsaber colors and can’t simply pick one.

My absolute favorite addition to the New Journey+ is the red lightsaber blade. I think it’s one of the most intimidating colors for any lightsaber wielder to use. Matching it with dark robes and a black lightsaber hilt is so satisfying.

The extra perks that change the difficulty and additional lightsaber blades don’t necessarily make it a completely new game but they definitely enhance the experience and prover a bigger challenge for those players that love getting pushed to the limits.

The first change you can make to Cal is right at the first Meditation Point. You can use all of the Skill Points and change Perks.

This concludes my guide to the New Journey+ in Jedi Survivor. You can take a look at the  Star Wars Jedi Survivor Guides Master List  for more.

Journey Review

Just deserts?

If Journey is about God, then God has played an awful lot of video games. One of the most fascinating things about thatgamecompany 's sand-blown chunk of spiritual eye candy isn't that it reinvents gaming, or extends the medium's reach: it's that it takes old ideas - sometimes very old ideas - and repackages them in clever, stylish, and unexpected ways.

That glowing mountain on the horizon is a case in point. It seems like a straight lift from the Old Testament at first, but in Journey it's also your ultimate objective. It's both goal and waypoint marker, far less artificial than the breadcrumb trails of Perfect Dark Zero or Fable 2 , but no less effective when it comes to the simple, crucial things that a game has to do - like keeping its players oriented as they move through large, artfully empty environments.

Or check out the scarf that billows and flaps around your devout and pin-legged avatar as you lean into the wind. It's part of a distinctive moth-brown uniform that comes teasingly close to referencing religious garb as varied as the burqa or a Franciscan's habit, but it's also there to tell you how much magical energy you have left for jumping and floating. It's a piece of standard UI, essentially, yet it's stuck right into the game world, tracing pretty little spirals in the desert air as form and function merge.

The more you explore, the more natural it all seems. Checkpoints become mysterious stone altars that you kneel before while saving your progress. The in-game economy, such as it is, comes in the shape of shreds of cloth that spin and tumble in the wind. Your climbing frames are made from ancient temples, smashed and broken in the dust, their finials and ornaments always a hair's breadth away from conforming to Middle-eastern, European, or Asian architectural styles. Daringly uncluttered maps fence you in with invisible walls that take the form of brutal winds or cascading rivulets of falling sand.

new journey game

Journey's a fairly short adventure - if you're bringing such worldly concerns to this delicate piece of whimsy, you'll probably want to know that an initial play-through will clock in at about an hour and a half - but it makes a lot of pleasantly familiar stops along the way. The storyline leaves much to your own interpretation: you wake, alone, in the desert, and must then head towards a glowing peak in the distance. Everything beyond that is what you make of it. Yet the game's mechanics waste no time at all explaining exactly what you should be doing from one moment to the next.

This part's a little bridge puzzle. This glowing thing is an end-of-level marker. Over here you'll get to slide downhill for a while like you're playing SSX - see if you can aim for the gates, eh?

Journey has room for physics challenges, stealth sections, and even some gentle levelling up as you collect tokens that allow you to hover in the air for longer periods of time. But it does all of this with an unusual economy of control - you're basically limited to move, jump, float and, um, sing - and with a kind of sparse, widescreen, biblical imagination that redesigns classic gaming elements to the point that you'll barely recognise them.

The main beats of the narrative borrow much from thatgamecompany's previous game, Flower, but in terms of straight-up visual storytelling - when it comes to introducing mechanics wordlessly and prodding you through levels so that you always end up in exactly the right place - Journey's creators now seem the equal of Valve or even Nintendo. Infrequent prompts tell you how to press a button to float or how to rotate the pad to turn the camera (this is annoying, incidentally, and a real design imposition - thankfully you can also use the right thumbstick) but most of the guidance takes place without you even realising it.

Your viewpoint might shift gently as you head towards a tumbledown ruin so that you can pick an easy path onto its roof, while pools of light and murky shadows in the distance do much to draw you from one short chapter to another. There's room to explore as you make your way past rusting machinery, ancient gantries and desert canyons sparkling with tiny pieces of quartz - just as there's room, in such a sombre experience, to muck about a little and surf down the sides of dunes leaving large trenches in your wake. As the name suggests, though, this isn't really a game about hanging around. It's about moving on and making progress - as steadily, in fact, as if you were Link riding on Epona.

new journey game

If Journey's in love with games, it's also quietly enamoured of cinema, too. Each hill you crest frames your next objective as a dreamy Technicolor spectacle, while there are distinct traces of Spielberg in particular in the lighting, the pacing, and the willingness to let a swooping, arching soundtrack dictate the mood. All of that is great, of course - nobody makes inhuman forces as warmly comforting as Spielberg - but Journey's picked up some of the director's weaknesses, too. This is elegant, masterful stuff, but it can actually seem a touch too polished on occasion. It's put together with such obvious skill that it can feel calculating - and even a little hollow.

That's how I felt on my first play-through, at least. Journey initially seemed to be an attempt to manufacture a kind of non-denominational religious experience for players: to make them feel like a small yet crucial part of something vast, mysterious and powerful. It's very hard to construct free-floating reverence, though, even if you're working with such a potent tool as a video game. You can design your way towards it, but you'll end up relying on shorthand: cathedral buttresses, shafts of light, planes shifting ominously beneath skies latticed by falling stars.

On my first trip through Journey, I was amazed at the craft and the scene-setting, and appreciative of the way that the storyline left careful gaps so as to allow for a handful of different interpretations, but the whole thing came off like a complex magic trick that didn't quite work. I felt admiration more often than awe. I was appreciative, but unmoved.

It turns out that I was missing a crucial piece of the experience, however. On my second play-through, I found it.

Two thirds of the way through Journey, the going gets tough. This isn't a hard game by any standards, but it's very good at creating a sense of hardship as you reach the final act. I was trudging along, wind-swept and battered, and I knew that things were only going to get worse. Then the clouds parted, just for a second. I turned a corner and caught a quick glimpse of a moth-brown shadow, clambering along in the distance.

It was another player. Journey does this: it sneakily shoves someone into your game from time to time, and then gives you the option to travel along with them. There's no voice chat available, and there are no naff combo moves to pull off in concert, but you can sing to them - this is essentially Journey's musical spin on a multi-purpose interact button - and you can often get basic points across in a kind of heavy-handed mime.

It sounds like rudimentary co-op, but it feels like nothing else. You're together, but separated. You meet, but you're always kept at arm's length, and you have no say in who you'll encounter.

So now I was able to work through Journey's darkest, most troublesome section with a companion. We pushed through the wind together, each singing one note, and then having the other echo it back. We recharged each other's jump power - a trick that normally only those scraps of floating cloth can do - and I guided my fellow traveller through some of the nastiest parts of the game: past traps and sudden winds and severe drops, onwards and upwards, until the mountain towered directly above us.

It was a total transformation. Play Journey with a random - and chances are that you will - and all the convenient metaphors and artificiality melt away. The game's lunges at profundity disappear, and you're left to focus on the core of the experience: a pilgrimage, filled with incident, compacted into the space of a few glorious set-pieces.

Granted, thatgamecompany's done most of the work for you. The studio has poured the deserts, trashed the temples and filled the world with the floating presence of a nameless almighty. The truly brilliant move, though, was to leave a space at the very centre of the design that only a stranger can fill.

The master stroke, as in all great myths, lies not with God, but with the human element.

new journey game

Hey guys! Thank you for your incredible support and enthusiasm for AFK Journey. We're excited to announce that the new "Waves of Intrigue" season is arriving with next month's update. Here's a sneak peek at what's coming!

What does the season in AFK Journey look like?

Many new players from the Asia-Pacific region have joined our epic journey since August 8. Here's a quick rundown for them: The story and content you experience when you first enter Esperia are all part of the "Starter Story." Once you reach the required Resonance Level, advance in the story, and your server has been open for at least 40 days, you'll unlock brand new content as part of the ongoing season.

Each season lets you and your heroes explore new areas, experience exciting stories, meet new heroes, enjoy new gameplay, and earn plenty of rewards. The adventure continues as one season wraps up and another begins!

Will my game progress reset in a new season?

Not if you are currently playing the Starter Story!

All your progressions during the Starter Story, including your hero collection, hero tiers, Exclusive Equipment upgrades, Resonance Level, Class Equipment, and Artifacts, are considered "non-season" content. This means it won't reset with each season and will be preserved permanently.

Each season introduces unique "progression systems" designed to enhance your gaming experience. These systems may adjust hero skills and battlefield mechanics to add new strategic elements to the game. Season features also offer a wealth of resources to help you get the most out of the new season.

Seasons are our way of addressing issues like power creep, feature overload, and high barriers for returning players. We aim to prevent the stats from growing endlessly, ensure players can focus on a manageable number of features to play, and make sure returning players don't feel left behind. Our goal is to keep the story of Esperia engaging and captivating for everyone, no matter how long their journey takes.

What's coming in the new season?

We have prepared an exciting new season filled with fresh stories, gameplay, and tons of rewards!

-New Story: Explore a new part of Esperia and uncover intriguing new tales and secrets.

-New Gameplay: Enjoy relaxing activities like Fishing or dive into strategic challenges to build the ultimate formation. We hope you find and enjoy the variety of features we've lined up for the season!

-Rewards & Gifts: Start the season strong with plenty of Invite Letters, Diamonds, and Exclusive Equipment upgrade materials. You can earn plenty of free gifts every month from season and non season features or events. Make sure to follow our social media so you don't miss out! Plus, you can now earn Season Tokens from seasonal features to redeem heroes not available in Emporium and other valuable resources to help you get the heroes you want.

What should I keep in mind before starting the new season?

After giving you a brief overview of the seasons in AFK Journey, here's some additional info to keep in mind:

1.   Each season starts and ends globally at the same time, so everyone has access to the same content. If you want to explore past seasons, you can do so in "Peaks of Time," where you can access areas and replay stories of previous seasons. For example, the "Song of Strife" season will be available on October 1st with the launch of the Peaks of Time feature. Players who have completed the main story quests of the Starter Story will be able to access this season.

2. Compared to the Song of Strife season, getting into the new Waves of Intrigue season is now much easier. You can unlock it by reaching Resonance Level 240 and completing the Ryeham Tales chapter in Starter Story. To help balance the experience between early and late starters, we will store missed AFK Rewards and Instant AFK rewards, so you won't fall too far behind if you enter the season a few days late. Additionally, the Baseline Level feature will help bridge the gap between players of different levels. As you progress, the stat growth from Resonance Levels will slow down to avoid a significant disparity between long-time and new players.

How does the season calculation work?

Season calculation rules may vary, so always check the game announcements for the latest details. For the "Song of Strife" season, here's how it works:

1. You earn points based on your progress in seasonal features, which you can redeem for rewards.

-Season Resonance Level: 10 points per average Hands of Resonance hero level (rounded down)

-Season Equipment: 5 points per average Equipment level across all classes (rounded down)

-Season Artifact: 5 points per level from 1-20 (including Level 20) and 15 points per level for Level 21 or above.

-Season Magic Charm: 20 points for each Mythic Magic Charm, up to 400 Magic Charms and a maximum of 8,000 points.

MOBAs are suddenly back in fashion, and one dev says it might be because of soulslikes: 'Now that more players understand that it feels great to master a difficult game, I think more are willing to take that journey'

Years after the MOBA bubble burst, August brought three major MOBAs at once.

Abrams brandishes his heavy handgun in Deadlock.

2024 is feeling very 2016 all of a sudden. No, I don't mean because we're reentering the psychic maelstrom of election season; I'm talking about the MOBAs. In the back half of the 2010s, we watched the industry pack the market way past the MOBA oversaturation point as it seemed like every major publisher was racing to capture whatever lightning Riot and Valve hadn't already bottled with League of Legends and Dota 2.

Many of those efforts failed as, tragically, jungling as Batman didn't prove compelling enough to draw a sustainable amount of attention away from the biggest players in the space. The market moved on to chase the emerging battle royale zeitgeist, trailing failed MOBAs in its wake and leaving the genre to its handful of unchallenged titans.

But now, years later, there's a bunch of MOBA action happening all at once. It began in April, when the formerly free-to-play Gigantic returned from its 2018 closure as Gigantic: Rampage Edition . August, though, has felt like the breaking of some arcane seal that was keeping lane-based combat from reemerging into the world. Over the last few weeks, Predecessor —the MOBA built from the assets of Epic's defunct Paragon—got its 1.0 release, Smite 2 has launched its buy-in closed alpha, and Valve revealed Deadlock , its in-development third person shooter MOBA whose not-so-secret closed playtest had attracted tens of thousands of players.

Whether it's a temporary burst of activity or the beginning of a renaissance, MOBAs are back in vogue. The question is: Why now? For Alex Cantatore, executive producer for Smite 2, soulslikes deserve some of the credit.

"I've often described MOBAs as the 'soulslike' of multiplayer genres," Cantatore told PC Gamer via email. "They're really hard. You're going to die a lot to learn the game." While technically demanding games have always had their audience, we're now in a world where games like Elden Ring can casually brutalize their players and still sell tens of millions of copies. With punishing games achieving a mainstream appeal, Cantatore says MOBAs have an opportunity to attract an audience they might not have been able to eight years ago.

"That same feeling you get when you take down Malenia? Like you were rewarded for deeply mastering the game? That's the feeling you get from winning every game of Smite 2," Cantatore said. "Now that more players understand that it feels great to master a difficult game, I think more are willing to take that journey."

Robbie Singh, CEO of Predecessor developer Omeda Studios, thinks we aren't seeing a MOBA comeback so much as a MOBA evolution. "In our view, MOBAs never really went away in the first place," Singh told PC Gamer over email.

The biggest gaming news, reviews and hardware deals

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

Instead, Singh thinks the core audience of western gamers turned its attention elsewhere as MOBAs didn't keep up with advancing tech and design standards. "It could be that a new generation of gamers is just now coming to realize that there's also a new generation of MOBAs that look and play better than the ones they may be used to," Singh said.

For Cantatore, it seemed like so many MOBAs failed in the late 2010s because they didn't offer a compelling alternative to what was being offered by League and Dota. "I think during the last MOBA boom, you saw a lot of fine games that didn’t really evolve the formula and so they didn't stand out compared to established competitors," Cantatore said. "Smite survived because it threaded the perfect balance."

Similarly, Singh says Omeda understands that, in 2024, it's not enough for Predecessor to try and repackage the traditional MOBA experience. "These days, we'd say that to be successful as a modern MOBA you need a solid foundation of heroes and core mechanics, but we also want to step back and look beyond the genre itself," Singh said.

Considering that Gigantic, Smite 2, Predecessor, and now Valve's Deadlock are all MOBAs that have cast off the traditional RTS-style controls for a third person, action-centric presentation, it seems like there's a common sentiment that MOBAs need to meet changing expectations.

"I think player expectations just keep growing," Cantatore said. "And we think the only way to meet those expectations is to get your game out in the public earlier than you're really comfortable with, so that you can get feedback on exactly what players think and what they want."

Paris Paralympics 2024: Army-man Narayana Konganapalle's journey from landmine blast survivor to para-rower

  • Shyam Vasudevan

Narayana Konganapalle was seven days from finishing his posting in Jammu and Kashmir as a sepoy with the Indian Army when he stepped on a landmine. His leg exploded below the knee and life, as he knew it, changed in February 2015.

"I was ready to return to my unit in Rajasthan. Sirf 7 din baaki the aur mine blast hogaya [I had just seven days to go when the accident happened]. I was married for just 10 months at that point and had applied for advanced leave to go back home to my family," Narayana, who was with the Rashtriya Rifles, tells ESPN with a wry laugh.

He would then spend the next three months in a hospital in Udhampur, trying to process this new way of life. He told only his elder brothers about the incident and did not tell his parents or wife about it. He didn't know how to break the news to them. Hailing from a farming family and the youngest of four siblings, he enrolled himself in the Army in 2007 to provide for his family.

PARALYMPICS 2024 KEY DATES | EVERY MEDAL WON BY INDIA AT PARLYMPICS | PARALYMPIC CLASSIFICATIONS EXPLAINED

From guarding India's borders as a sepoy to now being constrained to a bed, Narayana struggled to cope with his new reality. "I didn't know about artificial limbs or para-sports then. I just thought my life was over and that I would have to use support to walk for the rest of my life. I was newly married then and was really mentally affected because I didn't know how to tell my wife about it," recalls Narayana, who hails from the Nandyala district in Andhra Pradesh.

Narayana then learnt about the Artificial Limb Centre in Pune, where he could get a prosthetic limb made free of cost. Thus began a new journey for Narayana as he underwent multiple surgeries around his knee over the next seven months in Pune to ensure the prosthetic leg fit him perfectly and 11 months after the incident, he was back on two feet. It was only then that he took a break and went back home 11 months after the incident.

It was a challenging time, but Narayana found solace in sports. He met Lieutenant Colonel Gaurav Dutta, a para-triathlete himself and the Officer-In-Charge of the Army Paralympic Node in Pune, who introduced him to athletics.

"I did javelin for two years, but then I felt pain while running and I went back to our training centre in Bengaluru. It was in 2018 when Colonel Dutta asked me if I would like to give rowing a go and I went back to Pune to pursue the sport at the Army Rowing Node. I was just happy to be playing a sport," says Narayana, who currently holds the position of subedar.

Narayana made rapid strides in the sport as within a year, he won medals at the 2019 Poland championship and bronze medals in the 2019 World Rowing Cup and the Asian Championships. That was followed by a bronze in the 2022 World Cup with his then-partner Kuldeep Singh, who had also lost a leg during a landmine blast in Jammu and Kashmir.

"My life changed in a second, but it was also good in a way - I got into para-sports. One way of looking at it is that "Oh, I lost a leg" but the way I look at it is that I got into para-rowing because I lost a leg," he says.

But 2023 posed a unique challenge: the Para-Asian Games and 2024 Paralympics program did not feature the PR3 men's pair event but had the PR3 mixed doubles event. No female para-rowers trained at the Army Rowing Node and hence Narayana was in a fix, before he had a chance encounter with Anita, who was also an amputee. Anita had lost her left leg in an accident when she was 17.

Narayana convinced Anita to try rowing and the combination clicked as within eight months of training, the duo won silver at the Para Asian Games. "We had no hopes of a medal at the Asian Games because we were a newly-formed team but we went on to win a medal and an incredible feeling. People knew our names after we won that medal...what can be more special than that for an athlete?" says Narayana.

Congratulations to Anita and Narayana Konganapalle for their exceptional Silver Medal in Rowing - PR3 Mixed Double Sculls. Their teamwork and dedication have shone brilliantly! This achievement fills the nation with pride. pic.twitter.com/zNWXL3T41l - Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) October 28, 2023

The duo went one step further and qualified for the Paralympics by winning the Asian qualifying championship in South Korea this April by clocking 7:50.80, which was a whole minute faster than the 8:50.71 they'd clocked to win silver at the Para-Asian Games.

Narayana and Anita were always the underdogs at the Paralympics as they've trained together only for 18 months, but their journey here has been nothing short of inspiring. The two amputees were united by their passion for sport and were the first mixed double sculls team to qualify for the Paralympics.

The duo finished third in their repechage race on Saturday and will next compete in the B Final of the PR3 double sculls, which will determine the 7-12th ranking positions.

28 august - 8 september, paris 2024: idrissa keita’s fairytale journey to paralympic taekwondo.

Instagram

Beneath the Grand Palais dome at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, Senegalese Para taekwondo fighter Idrissa Keita proved that underdogs can be dangerous.

The 21-year-old made his Paralympic debut in the men’s K44 +80kg on Day 3 of the Games against a more experienced opponent in Turkiye’s Mehmet Sami Sarac.

Sarac, 28, has been competing at international tournaments for more than a decade and has a string of world titles whereas Keita started the sport less than a year ago.

Para taekwondo matches are a one-round contest lasting five minutes.

Fighters don protective equipment and wear special sensor socks which register when a point is scored by hitting their opponent's torso.

Competitors score points by hitting their opponent’s torso - two points for a regular kick, three points for a turning kick and four points for a spinning kick. But head kicks are not allowed.

Keita bounded out onto the arena full of confidence, pumping his arm in the air.

He towered over his opponent and was the first on the scoreboard in the tightly matched contest.

At the end of five minutes, the scores were level 4-4.

The bout was forced into a golden round – where the first opponent to score two points in 60 seconds wins.

Keita triumphed 6-4 and kissed the arena floor before hugging his team officials.

“I feel very, very happy,” he told the IPC, after advancing to the next round.

Keita faced Great Britain’s Matt Bush in the quarter final, in a match that was always going to be a tough ask for the rookie.

Although Keita was first to score, Bush soon warmed up and drew even 4-4.

In the final minute Bush had a spree of points and Keita was penalised for some Gam-jeoms. The match ended 16-4 in favour of the Welsh fighter, but the experience was still a personal triumph for Keita.

Cinderella man

After his father died, Keita was forced to leave school and he moved away from his hometown of Kaolack to find work in the capital Dakar.

“Our economic condition had deteriorated - I had to leave school and look for work to help my mother,” Keita said.

Life was tough for the youngster, who has a right-hand impairment, and at times was forced to beg for food.

In his free time, he would go for walks at the Parcelles Assainies beach and watch videos of taekwondo fights

A chance encounter with Senegal’s national Para taekwondo coach Maitre Abdoulaye Ndiaye at the beach would be life changing.

“He asked me to join Para taekwondo after knowing my interest in the sport,” Keita said.

“I started training right away at a club - I was determined to be part of the national team, after learning that the Paralympic Games could change my life forever and allow me to support my family.”

Keita underwent intensive training for a few months and then blitzed the field to win gold in the K44 men’s +80kg at the Africa qualification event in Dakar, Senegal.

“Everything is possible if you believe in yourself – you can start from nothing and achieve your goals,” he said.
