A notre dame priority target will be on the other sideline this weekend, share this article.

Notre Dame football hosted Mississippi safety Bralan Womack over the summer and offered him a scholarship .

When that happened, it looked like the Irish were in the driver seat of his recruitment, but that might not be the case anymore . The 5-foot, 11-inch and 185-pound star has since been to multiple other campuses and this weekend he will see Notre Dame, but from Texas A&M ’s sidelines.

The nation’s No. 24 overall prospect according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings does have the Irish among his top schools, but they have seemingly slipped behind a few programs. For Notre Dame to seriously get back in it, they’ll have to get him on campus this fall.

As of this moment, there is no known plan for Womack to return to South Bend, but there is plenty of time for the coaching staff to set a visit up.

Notre Dame is located adjacent to South Bend, Indiana, the state’s fourth-largest city and part of the South Bend-Mishawaka-Elkhart metropolitan area, with a population of more than 300,000.

Like many Midwestern cities, South Bend’s history includes a period of heavy reliance on industry, most famously as the center of manufacturing for Studebaker automobiles. While the area still boasts notable industrial strengths (such as the booming recreational vehicle manufacturing found in neighboring Elkhart), the South Bend of today is characterized by smart growth and 21st-century innovation that marks a re-emergence from past economic distress.

The most poignant symbol of this rebirth may be the aptly named Renaissance District on the south side of South Bend’s downtown, billed as the Midwest’s largest mixed-use technology campus. Here, tech start-ups are filling the buildings once used by Studebaker before it closed in the 1960s. It’s part of a broader pattern of change brought on in part by exponential growth in private investment, which has revitalized vast swaths of South Bend with hotels, restaurants, and luxury housing.

South Bend River Lights

Notre Dame has played a role in these developments in various ways, as its investments in research and commercialization have helped to create a growth-friendly environment. The University has partnered with South Bend and the community in other ways as well, such as the groundbreaking Smart Sewer systems, which use technology developed at Notre Dame and are now in use in dozens of cities worldwide. In 2015, the University helped secure a $42 million grant from the Indiana Economic Development Corporation for St. Joseph, Elkhart, and Marshall counties. In addition, studies show the University contributes $2.46 billion to the local economy each year.

The region has always been home to outstanding arts, entertainment, and recreation. The Morris Performing Arts Center downtown and Notre Dame’s own DeBartolo Performing Arts Center draw top national acts throughout the year. Near the Renaissance District sits Four Winds Field, home to the South Bend Cubs, the AAA affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. In addition, Notre Dame’s campus is less than an hour’s drive to the beaches of Lake Michigan, where charming coastal communities offer shopping and relaxation.

Closer to campus, Eddy Street Commons continues to shine as an example of an effective public-private enterprise. The mixed-use dining, residential, and shopping hub is the result of a partnership between the City of South Bend and the University and is a popular spot year-round. Just a few miles from campus is a large retail corridor that includes University Park Mall, Heritage Square, and several shopping and dining options.

ESPN’s College GameDay previews Notre Dame-Texas A&M matchup, expectations under Mike Elko

Rece davis and “stanford” steve coughlin discussed the pregame show’s first trip to college station since 2018..

Texas A&M sports contributor

6:07 PM on Aug 30, 2024 CDT

L to R, ESPN analyst Desmond Howard, host Rece Davis,, contributor David Pollack, analyst...

Rece Davis, host of ESPN’s College GameDay, has a call to action for Texas A&M fans attending Saturday’s broadcast of the traveling pregame show in Aggie Park.

“The energy here of the 12th Man, the dedication to traditions, the total buy-in of all the Aggies to it make it an environment that you really don’t find anywhere else in college sports,” Davis said. “The one thing I will say is that I hope the crowd’s a little bit bigger than the last couple of times. The Aggies show up for midnight yell and then sometimes they don’t roll out of bed early enough to come make GameDay quite that big, but I think they will tomorrow.”

It’s going to be an early wake-up call for the live show beginning at 8 a.m., but anticipation for No. 20 A&M’s season-opening matchup with No. 7 Notre Dame at Kyle Field may keep fans from catching any sleep. The Aggies have the sport’s biggest stage as they look to start coach Mike Elko’s first year at the helm on a high note.

“I’m looking forward to it, because I think there’s a ton of excitement around Mike’s arrival and what’s possible,” Davis said. “If you win, it gives you a big boost, and everybody’s paying attention. … Getting out on that stage, everybody’s aware. They’ll see what Elko is bringing to the table.”

GameDay is in College Station for the first time since Sept. 8, 2018, when the Aggies lost to No. 2 Clemson, 28-26. Six years later, A&M’s campus looks — and feels — a bit different from the last time members of the show’s cast were in Aggieland.

“It’s got to be 30 degrees cooler than it was that weekend,” “Stanford” Steve Coughlin said of his last visit to A&M for the Alabama game in 2013. “I just remember being on the field and I couldn’t believe how hot it was. [It was] an incredible atmosphere. Half this stuff I feel like wasn’t even built then. … We have six hotels [with] people staying at, I didn’t even think they had six hotels in 2013 here.”

Kyle Field was renovated in 2014-15 to boost its capacity to its current number of 102,733. Standing room areas allow for crowds exceeding 105,000, an attendance that could be approached Saturday to create a raucous atmosphere for the 6:30 p.m. kickoff.

“It’ll be swaying, you’ll be thinking that the new construction they’ve done is about to come tumbling down because it’s going to be rocking back and forth,” Davis said. “Just seeing those gold helmets on the other side tends to light a little fire in opposing fanbases. I think it’ll be a great way to get the season started.”

Much of the Aggies’ excitement for the showdown stems from feelings that Elko can take the team to heights largely unseen during former coach Jimbo Fisher’s six-year tenure . Behind a new coaching staff, experienced returners, talented newcomers and a favorable schedule, Davis felt the pieces are in place for a strong season for A&M.

“I’m not trying to put any heat on Mike [Elko] in his first year, but I don’t know that you’ll ever get a better SEC schedule,” Davis said. “You miss some of the big boys, and the ones you play come here, and your big nonconference game comes here. It’s really set up for A&M to have a terrific season. They’ve got a talented team, and if things fit together early, I think the schedule sets up nicely, too.”

With primetime treatment against a top-10 opponent, Coughlin said the spotlight on A&M in the first week of the season could propel the Aggies into a bounceback year with plenty of momentum and confidence.

“I think there’s no bigger chance for a jumpstart of a program and a season than what coach Elko has in place for tomorrow,” Coughlin said. “I think [A&M] could take a bigger step than anybody else can with a win [in] Week 1, knowing where you are and knowing what the expectations are. But, that’s a big jump. If they could do that, that’s bigger than anybody else in the country.”

Coughlin said Elko’s return to A&M after two seasons as Duke’s head coach and four years as the Aggies’ defensive coordinator puts them in position to be a contender in the SEC within the next several years. Elko surpassed expectations with the Blue Devils with a 16-9 record alongside senior Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard.

“The change has brought a different mindset just with the idea of how Coach Elko did what he did at Duke,” Coughlin said. “I think he did it with hard work and a great staff, and he’s instilled that here. I do expect them to get back to prominence and get to Atlanta for an SEC title game in the very near future.”

With several high-caliber games remaining on A&M’s home slate, including Missouri, LSU and Texas, Davis didn’t rule out the possibility of GameDay returning to College Station. Regardless, he said he’s confident he’ll still be thinking of the Aggies for the weeks to come.

“The one thing I can’t stand about coming here, and I don’t mean to be critical, but, for about the next three weeks, maybe four, I’m going to be randomly walking through the hallway of my house, taking out the garbage, I’m petting the dog, and I’m going to do something and I’m going to start going, ‘hullabaloo, caneck, caneck,’” Davis said. “Then, I’m going to start sawing horns off and the Aggie War Hymn’s going to be playing my head for about a month.

“I do love the Aggie War Hymn, but it gets in your brain and you cannot get it out. … I love that. It’s fun.”

A Q&A with Chemistry Major Zachary Koh '26 on Pursuing Undergraduate Research at Notre Dame

Published: August 28, 2024

Author: Jessica Frazier

Zachary Koh ’26, a chemistry major with a neuroscience concentration through the Notre Dame College of Science and a  bioengineering minor though the College of Engineering , is deeply involved in research at Notre Dame, participating in three different projects. In this Q&A, he discusses how he found these opportunities, his experience traveling abroad for the six-week Neuroscience program in London , shares advice for incoming students eager to pursue similar paths, and reflects on the lessons he has learned throughout his journey.

Zachary Koh '26 in a lab at Notre Dame.

Why did you choose Notre Dame:

I knew I wanted to come to Notre Dame after my first Singapore club meetup. The alumni and current students spoke at length about the strong sense of community and how impactful that was in their personal journey. I remember distinctly how one alumni said: “These friends that you meet at ND will not only be your groomsmen; they will also be your pallbearers.” That struck a chord with me and I’ve never looked back since.

What are you researching?

I’m involved in three research projects here on campus! Two of them are with The Smith Lab ; I am working on a computational biology project to map out how sensory axons connect with spinal circuits in zebrafish, and a developmental neurobiology project to study how sensory neurons become organized during nervous system construction. I am also working with Dr. Vural to train an AI model to mimic the symptoms of mental disorders such as schizophrenia to be able to diagnose them.

What was the process to get involved in undergraduate research?

For The Smith Lab, I started by looking up what each lab did in the neuroscience faculty. Dr. Smith’s research truly intrigued me, so I emailed him! Don’t be afraid to do this as professors are more than happy to have a chat with you, and can even direct you to other professors if they don’t have availability in their lab or may even suggest a better fit in another lab. Another way to get into research is through the professors you take classes with. That’s how I started working with Dr. Vural; my teammate and I wanted to turn our term paper for our “Physics of the Brain” class into a research project.

Why is this research important to you?

Neuroscience research is very fascinating as there is still so much to learn and discover in this field. Specifically, I am interested in prosthetics and man-made neural circuits—of how we can integrate the human nervous system and machinery seamlessly! Wouldn’t it be cool if one day we could have exact replacements, or even upgrades, of appendages?

Zachary Koh '26 stands with a group of friends at a Notre Dame tailgate.

How my researching funding works:

There are so many opportunities given to us undergrads. I work closely with Flatley Center for Undergraduate Scholarly Engagement (CUSE) when it comes to writing proposals and applications for grants and fellowships. Additionally, I was given funding to continue my research over the summer through the College of Science Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (COS-SURF) .

Studying abroad in London with the Neuroscience program:

I took two classes in London: “The Neuroscience of Love, Hate, and Human Relationships” and “Outwit, Outplay, Outlast: The Dynamics of Survivor.” These were two really interesting classes which actually complemented each other—studying the game theory behind solving problems logically, then learning why people don’t make logical decisions when their emotions are involved. My advice to anyone going abroad: fully embrace the experience. I was out of my comfort zone, not knowing a single person going into this trip. But now, we’re very close friends, meeting up every week for lunch. Make the most of it! Use weekends and holidays to travel to other parts of Europe and immerse yourself in different experiences and cultures.

What I love about doing research at Notre Dame:

I love research, and here at ND we’re surrounded by like minded people; it is never a competition with your peers and they too, want you to succeed. This collaborative research community is one that builds you up to prepare you for your future endeavors.
