The 7 Best San Diego Boat Tours

With its coastal perch and abundance of marine life, San Diego is best explored by boat. Whether you select a high-speed adventure or a relaxed sailboat ride, you'll enjoy spectacular views of the city and an experienced guide by your side. After consulting both traveler opinion and expert input, U.S. News determined that the following are the best San Diego boat tours.

Note: Some tour providers on this list may be running more limited operations due to COVID-19 or may impose testing or vaccine requirements. Check with your tour operator about availability before you book.

Flagship Cruises & Events – San Diego Harbor Cruise Full Bay Tour

This two-hour, comprehensive trip takes travelers to see the top sights in San Diego Bay, including the Star of India ship, the  Maritime Museum of San Diego , the Coronado Bridge and more. The ship comes equipped with a full-service bar that sells drinks (both alcoholic and nonalcoholic) and snacks. Tour-takers generally appreciate the guides' narration, which they frequently call both entertaining and informative. However, a few note it was hard to hear the guides at different parts of the ship.

Cruises are available daily with multiple departures in the morning and afternoon. Tickets to ride the triple-decker boats start at $37 for adults and $27.75 for children 4 to 12. If you're short on time, you can opt to take an hourlong cruise of either the north or south section of the bay.

Sail San Diego – Day Sail – 3 hours

Sail San Diego's three-hour Day Sail can be tailored to focus on San Diego Bay or the Pacific Ocean: it's the passengers' choice. Captains double as tour guides, and tourgoers consistently call them capable, knowledgeable and amusing. Sightings of dolphins and other sea creatures are common.

The approximately $100 ticket price covers the tour itself, parking and use of jackets and binoculars. You'll also enjoy complimentary snacks and beverages (including beer and wine). The tours, which start around 1 p.m. daily, typically have no more than six patrons at a time. Sail San Diego also offers a sunset sail and whale watching excursions.

Speed Boat Adventures – Speed Boat Adventure Tour

Speed Boat Adventure Tours permit visitors to take the helm of a speedboat on this guided tour of San Diego Bay. After providing instructions on how to operate the boats, which can accommodate up to three people, travelers take the wheel while guides provide information and observations via a two-way radio. You'll see the downtown skyline, Navy ships, the USS Midway Museum , Seaport Village and Coronado Bridge as well as various marine animals. Tour-takers regularly describe the guides' commentary as both entertaining and informative.

Tours last roughly 90 minutes and cover 13 miles. Prices vary depending on the number of tour participants (up to three people can ride per boat); a couple can expect to pay approximately $180. Speed Boat Adventures also offers a tour combining the boat ride with the use of electric scooters.

Adventure Whale Watching – Whale Watching

Adventure Whale Watching's tours give people the chance to see a variety of different whale types depending on the season. Travelers can generally see gray, blue, fin, Bryde's and humpback whales in spring and summer, while minke, fin and humpback whales are typically spotted around fall and winter. You could see dolphins, sea lions and seals year-round. Captains piloting the rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) are also naturalists who provide facts about marine life during the three-hour outings. The captains typically win praise from passengers for their knowledge and professionalism.

Tours occur two or three times daily (depending on the season) with morning, noon and afternoon departures. Tickets cost approximately $100 per person. Tours are limited to six passengers. Children younger than 4 may not partake in a public tour; you will need to book a private tour.

Everyday California – La Jolla Sea Cave Kayak Tour

During these approximately 90-minute journeys, paddlers will explore the La Jolla Underwater Park and Ecological Reserve, where they can see the area's seven sea caves. Kayakers may also glimpse sharks, whales or sea lions, among other marine wildlife. (The area's inhabitants change with the seasons.) You'll also get to see the beauty of La Jolla Cove . Visitors generally say they enjoy the experience and their helpful guides. Some kayakers were dismayed that the sea caves were inaccessible due to unsafe water conditions.

Tours depart multiple times daily and are limited to 20 kayakers (all of whom must be at least 5 years old). Prices vary depending on the day and time you book, though you can expect to pay between $85 and $130 for a kayak (single or double occupancy). Everyday California also offers tours combining kayaking and snorkeling.

Next Level Sailing – Whale Watching

Travelers agree that the wildlife seen on this tour and the yacht's crew make this trip worthwhile. Next Level Sailing spends about four hours on the water to view the different marine species (think: whales and dolphins) that swim in San Diego's waters.

Tours depart at 11 a.m. Saturday through Thursday and 9 a.m. on Friday; you must check in for your tour 30 minutes prior to departure. Tickets start at $85 for adults and $42.50 per child (Saturday and Sunday trips have a slightly higher fee). Next Level Sailing also charters boats for special occasions.

San Diego SEAL Tours

For 90 minutes, you'll tour San Diego on land and sea. But don't worry, you won't need to swap vessels as San Diego SEAL Tours' Hydra-Terra vehicle is amphibious. As you cruise, guides will tell you all about the area's history and point out the bay's resident seals and sea lions, along with San Diego's top attractions . Travelers greatly appreciate the informative guides who crack jokes throughout the tour (though some jokes are a little corny, per reviewers).

Tickets cost about $45 for adults, $30 for children ages 4 to 12 and $10 for toddlers 3 and younger. Tours depart from Seaport Village several times daily beginning at 10 a.m. You could save some coin by combining this outing with a trolley tour.

FULLY GUIDED ADVENTURE

Join us for a thrilling kayak tour of the la jolla sea caves.

Our fully guided kayak tour takes you through the Ecological Reserve and along the La Jolla Sea Caves—some of San Diego’s most famous attractions. The La Jolla Ecological Reserve and Underwater Park is a marine protected area that’s a famous destination for snorkelers, divers, and kayakers to respectfully explore. The Reserve is home to our friends— leopard sharks, Garibaldi (California’s state marine fish!), lush kelp beds, sea lions, and even the occasional pod of dolphins !

Our experienced tour guides will share fun facts and history about La Jolla, safely guide you along the sea caves, and lead you through one (ocean conditions permitting). This adventure is suitable for kayakers ages 6+, no experience necessary !

Departs throughout the day starting at 9 AM (weather permitting)

Ages 6+ for tandem kayak (with adult), 15+ for single kayak

Weight restrictions 450 lbs. maximum for tandem kayaks and 275 lbs. maximum for single kayaks

Total duration 90–120 minutes give or take for the whole experience

Your La Jolla kayak tour will start off at our La Jolla Kayak storefront where you will check-in with our front desk staff and get fitted with your helmet and a personal floatation device (PFD). You’ll then be introduced to your tour guide and walk to the boat launch area together (1-2 blocks). Our beach staff will greet you and match you with your paddle. Your tour guide will do a 10-15-minute paddle instruction to prepare you for maneuvering in the ocean.

• Entrance into the sea cave is dependent on weather and ocean conditions.
• You will get wet—please wear comfortable kayak gear, like, t-shirt and shorts or a bathing suit.
• Shoes are not required for the tour but please wear sandals or water shoes to walk to the beach.
• We rent wetsuits for an additional charge.
• We rent lockers to safely store your personal belongings for an additional charge.

9/16/2024 Lucky B caught LIMITS (6) Bluefin Tuna on their Full Day Cornado Islands trip for 3 anglers. The Dolphin PM caught 77 Calico Bass (100 Released). 39 Bonito, 14 Sheephead and 8 Rockfish for 24 anglers. The Liberty Full Day trip had 3 Bluefin Tuna, 12 Yellowtail, 15 Calico Bass, and 80 Rockfish for their private charter. The Dolphin AM trip is returning with 69 Calico Bass (100 Released) , 3 Sand Bass, 35 Bonito, 8 Sheephead, and 2 Rockfish for their 15 anglers. Great Calico Bass fishing, plenty of Bonito around, great weather and light load this afternoon and throughout the week.  The Condor returned this morning with 54 Bluefin Tuna up to 140lbs, 5 Yellowtail, and 2 Calico Bass for 22 anglers on their 3.5 day charter.  

The Pacific Dawn returned this morning with 35 Bluefin Tuna up to 60lbs for 15 anglers on their 2.5 day trip.

9/15/2024 The Dolphin PM caught 28 Calico Bass, 4 Sheepshead, 4 Sculpin, 36 Rockfish, 42 Bonito and 1 Lingcod for 58 anglers The Lucky B caught 5 Bluefin Tuna and 3 Yellowtail for 4 anglers on their full day trip. The Dolphin AM trip had 74 bonito, 32 calico bass (50 released), 9 sheephead, 5 sculpin, and 26 rockfish for 61 anglers. The Liberty just called in with 39 Bluefin Tunas for their 2 day private charter.  The Islander returned this morning with 49 Bluefin Tuna for 21 anglers on a 2.5 day trip.  The Tomahawk returned this morning with 40 Bluefin Tunas for their 2 day trip with 20 anglers aboard.   The Fortune returned this morning 18 Bluefin Tuna (up to 100 lbs.) for 11 anglers on a 2 day trip.  The Pegasus returned this morning with 6 Yellowtail (20-40lbs) and 42 Bluefin Tuna (40-160lbs) on their 2.5 day private charter with 11 anglers aboard. The Pacific Queen returned this morning with 136 Bluefin Tuna (up to 160 lbs.) for 26 anglers on a 3 day charter.

17 Hells Angels, associates face charges after hate-attack in Ocean Beach: San Diego DA

Seventeen people have been indicted on various charges involving an attack on three Black men by members of the Hells Angels biker gang in San Diego this year, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office said Monday.

The victims, ages 19, 20 and 21, were chased and attacked in San Diego's Ocean Beach neighborhood on June 6, subjected to a racial epithet and told they didn't belong there, prosecutors said in a news release.

San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan said the melee was possibly sparked because one of the victims "dared to talk to one of the girlfriends of these members.''

The incident occurred on OB's main drag, Newport Avenue. One victim escaped injury by running, another was punched, kicked and knocked unconscious, and the last victim, who was lying on the ground after several people beat him, was also allegedly stabbed in the chest by 43-year-old Troy Anthony Scholder, described as a "longtime Hells Angels leader.'' After the stabbing, other defendants spirited Scholder from the crime scene to the gang's clubhouse in El Cajon, Stephan said.

On Sept. 13, a grand jury indicted 14 people for allegedly taking part in the assault, including an allegation that it was carried out in association with a criminal street gang. The grand jury included hate crime allegations against 11 of the defendants.

The most serious charge, attempted murder, was brought against Scholder. The grand jury added three more defendants on charges of being accessories after the fact for allegedly helping to drive Scholder away from the scene.

“In San Diego County, we cannot, and will not tolerate violence and racism of any nature, much less crimes like this hateful, vicious, and unprovoked attack,” District Attorney Summer Stephan said in a statement.

Stephan said Hells Angels has chapters across the state, including an active chapter in San Diego County. Along with engaging in criminal activity, the motorcycle gang is "well known to have a despicable streak of racism, especially against Black people,'' she said.

All of the defendants were arrested last Thursday, prosecutors said, during which investigators allegedy seized drugs and 42 illegal guns.

Several of the defendants appeared in court on Monday.

Scholder, who is being held without bail, faces up to 39 years to life in state prison if convicted. Others face prison terms ranging from three to 17 years. Those who were allowed to remain out of custody must follow certain conditions, including not associating with the Hells Angels or other motorcycle gangs, and to stay away from the block of Newport Avenue where the alleged attack took place.

Trial was set for Nov. 14.

Simone Biles is the GOAT.

Biles, one of America’s greatest Olympic athletes, will showcase high-flying acrobatics in Oceanside’s new Frontwave Arena Monday evening to kick off the Gold Over American Tour .

The 11-time Olympic medalist, who has 30 world championship medals under her belt so far, will lead the GOAT tour in the new arena.

The GOAT, which also stands for Greatest of All Time, is fitting for Biles, the most decorated gymnast ever.

The tour will bring flips and gravity-defying athletics to Frontwave on Monday and Tuesday night.

The pop-concert style gymnastics show will feature other U.S. team members such as Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles, Hezly Rivera, Paul Juda, Brody Malone, Fred Richard, Joscelyn Roberson, Shane Wiskus, and Yul Moldauer.

Katelyn Ohashi, Peng-Peng Lee, Mélanie Johanna De Jesus Dos Santos, and Casimir Schmidt will also perform.

The show is 110 minutes long, and VIP ticketholders can experience a “Chalk Talk” question-and-answer session with the athletes, as well as a group photograph with Biles.

Also, VIPs will get a chance to dance and perform in the on-stage finale.

The performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. both nights.

What You Need to Know – Wildlife Kayaking

FAQs Wildlife Kayaking Eco Tour

I have never kayaked before; can i still join this tour.

You do not need any prior kayaking experience to join this trip! Our marine biologist guide will provide a short tutorial before the tour starts to ensure all participants are comfortable with maneuvering the kayaks. We use sturdy ocean kayaks that are inspected regularly, and everyone is provided with a life vest for safety. Our guide is also trained in Wilderness First Aid and Water Rescue. Wildlife Kayaking Eco Tours always depart in the morning, when the bay is at its calmest ensuring perfect kayaking conditions even for first-timers!

Are we guaranteed to see sea turtles?

Wildlife is unpredictable and sightings are never guaranteed. The Eastern Pacific green sea turtle population in San Diego is relatively small and our bay is large, so sightings are never certain. However, you won’t be disappointed as there is plenty of other wildlife to observe. The birdlife in the Chula Vista Wildlife Reserve is prolific and we often spot juvenile round stingrays and bat rays that are using the wetlands as nursing grounds.

Can I bring my own kayak?

Due to our insurance policy, you are not able to bring your own kayak. However, we offer both double and single kayaks that are in excellent condition. All of the equipment we provide has been sanitized right before your trip for hygiene and safety.

What fitness level is required?

Since this is a wildlife viewing tour we will paddle slowly to be able to enjoy nature and wildlife. There is no minimum required fitness level to participate in this tour. Should you for some reason lose steam halfway through our guide always carries a towline! If you have any physical limitations, please let us know in advance.

What makes this an “eco” tour?

Ocean Connectors is a nonprofit program with a mission to educate, inspire, and connect youth in underserved Pacific coastal communities through the study of migratory marine life. When you purchase your Eco Tour ticket proceeds go directly back to our youth education programs. All of our tours also focus on environmental education and conservation and align with our mission to educate, inspire, and connect. The Astros have won four in a row after a sweep in Anaheim and are 31-22 since the All-Star break to build a 4½-game lead on the Mariners in the division. Houston ranks seventh in run differential (plus-94), third in batting average (.262), second in opponent average (.228) and fourth in bullpen ERA (3.49). The Astros took two of three last year against the Padres.

San Diego Padres (85-65, 3rd in NL West)

A weekend sweep in San Francisco has buoyed the Padres’ postseason hopes. They enter the final two weeks as the NL’s top wild-card spot, 1½ games up on Arizona and somehow within 3½ games of the Dodgers in the NL West. More importantly, they have a 3½-game cushion on the Mets and Braves to make the playoffs.

What have they done lately?

• Houston: The Astros are hitting .284/.340/.428 over their last six games. Both Yordan Alvarez (.790 OPS) and OF Jason Heyward (1.500 OPS) have two homers over that stretch and Alvarez, Heyward and OF Mauricio Dubon (.718 OPS) all have four RBIs. OF Kyle Tucker has one homer, three RBIs and a .250/.367/.417 in eight games since returning from a shin fracture. RHP Bryan Abreu has struck out seven while throwing 3⅔ perfect innings out of the bullpen over the last week.
• San Diego: RHP Robert Suarez has blown saves in two of his last three chances. OF Fernando Tatis Jr. has four homers in his last five games (1.429 OPS), driving in eight runs over that stretch. INF Luis Arraez is carrying a 13-game hitting streak into the Houston series and five Padres all have an OPS over .750 over the last week: Tatis, Arraez (1.085), INF Donovan Solano (.918), OF Jurickson Profar (.899) and 3B Manny Machado (.761).

He has a 2.14 ERA over his last four starts, despite allowing nine runs — three earned — in two-thirds of an inning on Sept. 4 at Cincinnati. Arrighetti has a 5.22 ERA in 14 road starts this year.
• Padres RHP Yu Darvish (5-3, 3.52 ERA)   |   He’s making his third start since returning from the restricted/injured lists, throwing 63 pitches in his previous two games (5.87 ERA). Darvish has a 3.64 ERA in 15 career starts against the Astros, the last in 2021 (5 IP, 4 ER) in a no-decision.
• Astros RHP Hunter Brown (11-8, 3.59 ERA)   |    The third-year starter’s ERA is down significantly from last year’s 5.09 mark and he’s shaved his home run rate from 1.5 per nine innings last year to 1.0 this year. Brown is also at a career-high 158 innings and counting. The Padres knocked Brown around for six runs in 4⅔ innings last year, which included a home run from Xander Bogaerts .
• Padres RHP Michael King (12-9, 3.06 ERA)   |    At a career-high 161⅔ innings and counting, King has lowered his ERA from 3.41 in the first half to 2.31 in nine starts since the All-Star break. Among his starts with the Yankees last year was beating the Astros with five innings of one-run ball last September. King has a 2.61 ERA in 10⅓ career innings against the Astros.
• Astros LHP Framber Valdez (14-6, 2.91 ERA)   |    He has a 3.56 ERA in 12 road starts this year, but a 1.33 ERA in seven starts since the start of August. Valdez’s only starts against the Padres were a pair of starts in 2021 (10 IP, 5 ER).
• Padres RHP Dylan Cease (13-11, 3.58 ERA)   |    He broke out of a six-start slump (5.01 ERA) with 10 strikeouts over six shutout innings in beating the Giants over the weekend, his first win since Aug. 17. Cease has a 4.18 ERA in six career starts against the Astros, but he limited them to one run over 12⅓ innings over a pair of starts last year in which he struck out 15 against two walks.

Training room

• Houston: OF Ben Gamel is day-to-day with a knee bruise and 1B Jon Singleton was scratched from Sunday’s lineup with an illness. OF Chas McCormick (hand fracture) is aiming to return before the end of the regular season. The Astros have a number of pitchers who will not pitch again this season, headlined by RHP Lance McCullers Jr. (forearm surgery).
• San Diego: SS Ha-Seong Kim (shoulder) remains without a timetable as he has yet to throw across the diamond at 100 percent.
