Purdue’s online master’s in hospitality and tourism management updates curriculum to prepare service professionals for success in a wide range of industries
According to The Atlantic, the United States is in the midst of a paradigm shift – our economy, which was once driven by manufacturing, is now dominated by the services sector . This sector, which encompasses a wide range of businesses and industries that provide services to consumers, now accounts for over 70% of the United States’ Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Industries included in the services sector include financial service providers, the technology industry, media and entertainment, as well as food, hospitality and tourism. Increasingly, most jobs have a service component, and possessing strong service skills can help professionals succeed in a variety of different roles.
Purdue University is a global leader in training engineers, and the school’s White Lodging-J.W. Marriott, Jr. School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) is no different – expanding Purdue’s engineering legacy to “experience engineering.” Through the school’s top-ranked online Master of Science in Hospitality and Tourism Management , professionals from many different service sectors can get hands-on training focused on the latest trends and techniques in service management and prepare themselves for leadership roles in a variety of industries.
As a leader in training experience engineers, Purdue’s online HTM program focuses on helping service professionals craft and deliver an exceptional experience for the customer. Offering service excellence through experience engineering – whether in hospitality, restaurants, tourism or any other service-focused industry – requires a great deal of strategic planning, analytical thinking and industry expertise.
To reflect the complexities of experience engineering, the online master’s in hospitality and tourism management program has updated its curriculum to center on the state-of-the-art training and techniques that are defining the service industry today. These curriculum updates are designed to help prepare service professionals for the future of experience engineering and give them the advanced strategic and analytical skills they need to become service leaders and managers. Designed for professionals seeking career advancement, the program’s new curriculum offers foundational training that’s applicable to many different service fields, as well as courses in specialized topics and influential trends like influencer marketing, digital analytics, revenue management and more.
“The updated curriculum enriches the program offerings by including currently trendy and directly relevant topics that our students can directly apply to their jobs,” said Alei Fan, associate professor and director of master’s programs in the White Lodging-J.W. Marriott, Jr. School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Purdue University.
“For example, influencer marketing has become one of the most important marketing tools used by many organizations,” Fan continued. “The new Integrated Marketing Communication course integrates such a topic into the course contents by leveraging the research-proved best practices and hands-on experience to provide value-added learning experience to our online master’s students.”
Through taking updated courses focused on developing a service excellence mindset, experience design, revenue management, asset management, consumer behavior and more, students in the program reap the benefits of a traditional business degree with an added specific focus on service excellence. Several of the program’s courses focus on helping students build strong analytical thinking and strategic management skills, which are acquired through completing hands-on projects. These skills can help students prepare themselves for leadership and management roles within the service industry. Additionally, the program’s courses are taught by industry-experienced instructors from a variety of professional backgrounds who bring real-world knowledge to the virtual classroom.
“The hospitality and tourism industries have long been at the forefront of pioneering service excellence, but of late, other industries are realizing the benefits of their leaders adopting such a service mindset,” said Ceridwyn King, professor and school head of the White Lodging-J.W. Marriott, Jr. School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Purdue University. “In response to this, this curriculum redesign seeks to continue such pioneering efforts but does so in a way that is more accessible for those that not only work in hospitality and tourism but also for those that work in related fields or positions.”
The program’s curriculum updates also include an accelerated completion timeline, which makes earning Purdue’s master’s in hospitality and tourism management quicker and more accessible. In completing their master’s online, students get added flexibility and the ability to work toward the degree at their own pace. Those features were designed to help working professionals balance going back to school with their careers.
“The new curriculum consists of key competencies for the general service industry while covering a wide range of applications to various types of service organizations,” Fan said. “Students can adapt what they learn from this master’s program to various disciplines and different career paths in the general service industry or any service-related fields, including but not limited to hospitality, tourism, transportation, healthcare, senior living, retailing, financial planning, consulting and more.”

Unions for local hotel workers and flight attendants entangled in contract disputes
There's unrest on the local labor front as hotel workers shift into high gear with strike preparations and United Airlines flight attendants announce the results of their nationwide strike vote.
The tourism industry faces a potential strike from hotel workers amid union contract negotiations with the companies that operate the Hilton Hawaiian Village, Hyatt Regency Waikiki, Moana Surfrider, The Royal Hawaiian, Sheraton Princess Kaiulani, Sheraton Waikiki, Waikiki Beach Marriott, and the Sheraton Kauai Resort.
Unite Here! Local 5 represents more than 5,000 workers at those eight hotel properties.
"The changes we've seen coming out of the pandemic, particularly related to workload and staffing cuts, are cuts that our hotel operators and owners have attempted to make permanent," said Cade Watanabe of the local union.
He said the potential strike is the union's biggest mobilization in over 30 years. About 2,700 hotel workers went on strike for 51 days in 2018. Before that, the last major hotel strike in Hawaiʻi was in 1990, when 8,000 workers from 11 hotels picketed for three weeks.
"The big concern is whether or not we're going to have tourism that really works for us locals, and tourism that works for our guests as well, because the impact has not just been one on our hotel workers and hospitality workers, but it has also had a huge impact on the level and quality of service that our guests have come to expect and deserve," Watanabe said.
For example, he said, it is not unusual for Hilton Hawaiian Village guests to wait 45 minutes in line to check in.
"Our hotel owners and operators continue to make as much money today, if not more prior to the pandemic. They're charging our guests even more and providing less service," Watanabe said.
The union also just avoided a nationwide walkout of airline catering workers, ratifying a contract with Gate Gourmet.
At many airports across the country and in Honolulu, United Airlines employees under the Association of Flight Attendants held an informational picket Wednesday to announce the results of their strike authorization vote. They want pay increases and other benefits.
"United Flight attendants voted 99.9% to authorize a strike if necessary," said Kevin Batey, the president of AFA Local Council 14. "Recent strike authorization votes have propelled flight attendant negotiations forward at American, Alaska and Southwest, resulting in tentative agreements at all three of those carriers within a matter of months after their strike authorization vote."
This is United Airlines' first strike vote in 19 years. Batey said the group is nowhere near a strike as of right now. Among the required steps, the union would have to request permission from the National Mediation Board.
"We're hoping that United will understand the seriousness that flight attendants are demanding that we get a contract that we can ratify in the foreseeable future and not have to wait years for it," Batey told HPR. "Flight attendants need relief now."

Italy weighs steep tourist tax as european backlash against visitors grows.
Sign up for Semafor Flagship: The daily global news briefing you can trust. Read it now .
Italy is weighing a steep increase in tourist taxes to counter the impact of overtourism, the latest European country to take steps against unmanageable visitor numbers that have led to protests across the continent.
Under the proposed measure, the tax to spend the night in an Italian city, currently €1-€5 ($1-$5.50), could increase to up to €25 for the most expensive hotel rooms, the Financial Times reported — with the country’s Tourism Minister saying it would make tourists “ more responsible .”
Europe has become the epicenter of a movement against mass tourism this summer, with protests erupting in several countries including Spain, the Netherlands, and Greece, as residents object to the negative impact excessive visitor numbers have on their quality of life.
Residents protest rising costs and changing neighborhoods
Chief among residents’ complaints about an overflow in visitors is the rise in the cost of living and gentrification seen in highly popular tourist areas, which has pushed some residents out. In Barcelona, for example, rents have risen 68% in the past decade, CNN noted. Many feel tourism ruptures the social fabric of certain neighborhoods in touristy cities, where historic establishments are often forced out to make room for shops selling cheaper, lower-quality products aimed at visitors, Italian outlet Il Post added. Overtourism adds to the pressure on health services, waste management, and water supplies, Euronews reported, while the construction of hotels and new housing can bring environmental concerns.
In Italy, a fine line between preserving industry and protecting residents
In Italy, many residents are irked at the impact tourism has on their cities and support an increase in taxes for visitors, the Financial Times reported. But the government is also wary of alienating the tourism industry, which accounted for about 6% of the country’s GDP according to the most recent estimates , Italian outlet Pagella Politica noted. Some leaders in the tourism sector and politicians have already expressed frustration at the proposed measure, which they say may deter visitors and negatively impact the hospitality sector. Italy is also facing the pressure of increased public debt, which could reach 140% this year, the Financial Times added.
Past tourist taxes have produced mixed results
A number of popular tourist destinations in Europe have recently introduced or increased their tourist taxes, National Geographic reported, but the levies have produced mixed results . In Barcelona, two fees — one of which has increased from €0.75 ($0.80) per night in 2021 to €3.25 in 2024 — haven’t deterred tourists from visiting the city, but the city council expects to collect over $100 million from them in 2024, which officials say will help increase residents’ quality of life. In Amsterdam, a high tourist tax may just push visitors to spend the night outside the city and commute in for the day, one university professor told the magazine — which wouldn’t reduce the number of tourists, but would slash the revenue locals can make from accommodation.
Italy is mulling a €25-a-night tax for tourists staying at its most expensive hotels to turn overtourism into economic gain
It feels great to be popular—until the fame gets out of hand. That’s become Italy’s battle this summer.
With hundreds of millions of tourists flocking to the sunny European destination this summer, the uptick seems relentless. It’s now become a source of public anger across the region.
Some of Italy’s most sought-after cities, such as Venice, have tried to address the issue with an entry fee and measures to curb big groups of visitors .
While it’s early to gauge the success of those measures, the country looks determined to turn a corner on its overtourism problem. Its solution? Jacking up the fees tourists pay when staying at Italy’s most expensive hotels.
The Italian government is mulling a hotel tax of up to €25 a night, the Financial Times reported Friday, to achieve the dual goals of deterring some visitors while filling cities’ coffers.
The measure will add to the existing tax in cities like Venice, where a charge of between €1 to €5 already applies to overnight stays. Those levies could go higher in Rome and are aimed at safeguarding the legacy and improving the quality of services amid higher demand, according to Venetian tourism’s official website .
If the new proposal kicks in, it’ll have different tiers—for instance, the cheapest room will be charged €5, whereas rooms that cost over €750 a night will face €25 in fees, according to documents seen by the FT .
The move could, in theory, bring in generous revenues for municipalities. Part of the funds would be used to tidy up cities by improving trash collection.
However, tourism industry bodies are concerned that the potential fee goes too far, to the point of disincentivizing visitors.
“If we scare travelers who come to us by giving the impression that we want to take what we can, we are not doing a good service to the country,” Barbara Casillo, the head of hotel industry representative Confindustria Alberghi, told the outlet. “We must be very careful.”
The trend of overtourism has gripped much of Europe—and particularly Italy—this summer. The likes of Amsterdam have also sought to clamp down on it by imposing a future ban on cruises . The mayor of Athens has spoken out about tourism in the city not being economically viable as it stands today. Affordable travel and accommodation options have spurred this trend over time, experts told Fortune .
This, coupled with Italy’s sky-high public debt at 140% of its GDP, has put pressure on the government to ease its burden. Tourism, being one of Italy’s key industries, could be a way to do it. Airbnb has started collecting and remitting taxes on behalf of its short-term rental properties as of this year.
The additional fees are only fair so tourists become “more responsible” as legions visit Italy annually, tourism minister Daniela Santanche wrote in a social media post.
“Not all taxes are a tax,” she said.
Still, policies addressing mass tourism must tread a fine line between making monetary gains and allowing hospitality and tourism to flourish.
“The sector is making an important contribution to the country’s economy, especially with the growth of international travelers, after the difficult years of COVID,” Confindustria Alberghi’s president Maria Carmela Colaiacovo said in a statement earlier this month.
“But foreign competition is strong and fierce, we need careful policies that do not compromise the competitiveness of our businesses and our destinations. We cannot be a mere ATM for municipalities.”
Italy’s tourism ministry plans to discuss the tax proposal and possible modifications to it with industry bodies next month.
The Italian tourism ministry didn’t immediately return Fortune ’s request for comment.

Middle East Tourism Surges, Hotel Construction Hits All-Time High
Josh Corder , Skift
August 23rd, 2024 at 9:25 AM EDT
The Middle East is one of the few regions to already be ahead of 2019 tourism, led by Saudi Arabia's transformation plan.
Josh Corder
Skift’s State of Travel 2024 report highlighted that the Middle East and Africa are seeing a surge in international tourism, driven largely by Saudi Arabia’s push in recent years.
Here is the recent performance across Saudi, the UAE, Qatar and Egypt, four key tourism markets in the region.
Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia saw a combined 60 million international and domestic tourists in the first six months of the year. The kingdom did not share the split between international and domestic numbers.
Tourists in the period contributed $38.1 billion in expenditure during the first half of 2024.
Closed off to international tourism until 2019, Saudi Arabia has a target of 150 million tourists by the end of the decade, with 70 million coming from overseas. The country also wants tourism to become its second-largest industry behind oil.
The graph below from Skift’s State of Travel report shows the extent of Saudi’s tourism growth.
Dubai continued its upward trajectory in tourism, recording 9.31 million international overnight visitors from January to June 2024. This marks a 9% increase compared to the 8.55 million arrivals in the same period in 2023, according to data from the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET).
Visitor statistics breakdown:
- GCC and MENA Markets: 26% of total visitors, with 1.27 million (14%) from GCC and 1.09 million (12%) from MENA
- Western Europe: 20% share, totaling 1.89 million visitors
- South Asia: 1.62 million visitors (17%)
- CIS and Eastern Europe: 1.37 million visitors (15%)
- North-East and South-East Asia: 10% share (896,000 visitors), driven by recovery from China
- Americas: 617,000 visitors (7%)
- Africa: 404,000 visitors (4%)
- Australasia: 154,000 visitors (2%)
Qatar saw 2.63 million international tourists in the first half of 2024, 28% higher than the same period in 2023.
Saudi Arabia continued to be the top contributor to international arrivals with 755,000 visitors – 29% of total visitors coming in by June of 2024.
The remaining top 10 visitor markets were India (8%), Bahrain (5%), UK (4%), Kuwait (4%), Oman (4%), Germany (4%), USA (3%), UAE (3%), Italy (2%).
Egypt brought in 7.069 million tourists in the first half of 2024, surpassing the previous record of 7.062 million set in the same period of 2023.
Key figures:
- Tourist Nights: 70.2 million, up from 67.6 million in 2023 and 65.7 million in 2010
- Tourism Revenue: $6.6 billion, a 5% increase from $6.3 billion in 2023, and an 18% growth from $5.6 billion in 2010

The Pantai Indah Kapuk area, a business and residential area resulting from coastal reclamation in ... [+] North Jakarta.
Pantai Indah Kapuk Dua (PIK 2)—an Indonesian property developer backed by billionaire Anthoni Salim and entrepreneur Sugianto Kusuma—is doubling down on its investment in a 40 trillion rupiah ($2.6 billion) tourism estate project in a coastal town north of Jakarta.
The Jakarta-listed company bought an additional 232 hectares of land for 6.5 trillion rupiah, increasing the size of the tourism estate to over 1,800 hectares. The sprawling complex in Banten province will feature a safari area, golf course, hotels and an international motor racing circuit when completed by 2060. The project will be connected to Jakarta and Soekarno-Hatta International Airport via the 40-kilometer Katara toll road, which is currently under construction and expected to open within a year.
The additional investments will be funded from the $420 million PIK 2 raised from two private share placements this month. The shares were fully subscribed by PIK 2’s controlling shareholder Multi Artha Pratama, 50-50 joint venture by Salim and Kusuma.
PIK 2 expressed optimism about its commercial property development efforts, citing robust demand. In the first half of 2024, it reported pre-sales of 3.3 trillion rupiah, meeting 60% of its 5.5 trillion rupiah annual target. Commercial land lots were the primary driver, contributing 1.6 trillion rupiah, or nearly half of the total.
In August, PIK 2 opened the Swissôtel Nusantara, the first five-star hotel in Indonesia's new capital city of Nusantara. Operated by the French hotel group Accor, the 191-room and suite hotel features expansive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the surrounding forest. PIK 2 holds an 11% stake in the hotel, which is part of a $1.3 billion mixed-use property being developed by a consortium of Indonesian tycoons headed by Kusuma.
