What I Learned Traveling With Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan

Four days in Colombia with the Sussexes granted me an up-close look at how they work—and who they do it all for

There isn’t really any way to properly prepare for a trip with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Over the last 10 years of my career, particularly the last five at Harper’s Bazaar , I’ve found myself in all sorts of high-pressure celebrity scenarios. Profiling Bad Bunny ? Yep. Covering Beyoncé’s top-secret concert in Dubai ? You got it. Interviewing Oscar winners like Penélope Cruz ? Check. Something I often tell myself once drafts are filed and stories go live is “Well, it can’t get much bigger than that”—but somehow, it still always does. Being on the ground with Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan in Colombia for their tour with the Archewell Foundation, however, was easily one of the most eye-opening moments of my career.

The trip felt especially kismet to me because my earliest introduction to Harper’s Bazaar was my mother’s cherished Princess Diana commemorative issue, which she kept displayed in our home. Now, decades later, I found myself charting through Colombia with Diana’s son and his wife. Watching the warmth and compassion with which they approached meeting hundreds of strangers, and then witnessing the way these IRL events were discussed online, made me understand the vertigo that comes with simply existing at Harry and Meghan’s level of fame. Those four days in Colombia weren’t about the pomp and circumstance of celebrity, however; for the Sussexes, everything they do and everywhere they go always circles back to their mission of “showing up and doing good.”

The Sussexes’ visit came courtesy of an official invitation from Vice President Francia Elena Márquez of Colombia, and followed two other trips they made this year, to Nigeria and Canada . Since Harry and Meghan stepped back from being senior working members of the British royal family in 2020 and launched the Archewell Foundation in 2021, they’ve been able to focus on the issues most important to them, from speaking out about mental health to helping orchestrate crucial funding toward COVID-19 vaccine research at the height of the pandemic. But at the crux of their advocacy work is the goal of building a better, safer digital world for the generations to come, inspired by their own experience with media mistreatment and digital misinformation.

There’s no doubt that challenging the dehumanizing effect of the internet is a lofty goal, especially when the youngest generation is a group that was essentially born with the digital space at their fingertips. But if witnessing the duke and duchess meeting with students, teachers, parents, and community leaders on the ground in Colombia showed me anything, it’s that a healthier future for our children—one with less bullying, less toxicity, and less encouragement to troll and react—is possible, simply because it’s what today’s children ultimately want for themselves.

In classrooms across Colombia, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan sat down and listened—and I mean really listened—to what Colombian youth had to say about their evolving relationships with social media and how it affects their daily lives. To me, the Sussexes soar when working with today’s youth—it’s an interaction that once again brings the late Princess Diana front of mind when looking back at her public interactions with youth and AIDS patients decades ago. M aybe becoming parents themselves has helped Harry and Meghan form a more organic connection with children and teens. Whatever it is, their ability to get young people to open up about their lives and goals is undeniable. Children were ecstatic to see the couple walking the hallways of their schools, and the Sussexes were quick to pause for each and every hug, hand hold, or selfie request.

the duke and duchess of sussex visit colombia day 1

The Sussexes’ tour of Colombia was also about shining a light on some of Latin America’s most overlooked communities. As someone who has covered the intersection of AfroLatinidad and culture since the very beginning of my career, at times it was overwhelming to witness the joy that radiated from local children and elders alike at being chosen to share a piece of their world with the duke and duchess. Even in 2024, the mainstream media’s portrayal of Colombians is inherently white (just look at the country’s biggest entertainment exports), but the country’s African and indigenous traditions are rooted in every aspect of its art, music, and literature. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t moved by witnessing communities come together to showcase a traditional drum circle , or by chatting with young local dancers in Cali ahead of their performance. Colombians—like so many Latin Americans—manage to find resilience by maintaining their joy, and it’s something we all could learn from.

Duchess Meghan even mentioned it herself during a panel conversation for the Afro-Descendant Women and Power: Voices of Equity Summit, which celebrated Afro-Colombian women and leaders. Describing this era of her life as her “chapter of joy,” she said, “The more you are able to look at your life and really, truly recognize and be able to be grateful for your life … you have to be grateful for all aspects of it. My intentionality is to enjoy this chapter and be able to love through every piece of this as best we can.”

the duke and duchess of sussex colombia visit day 4

I needed that positivity during my time covering the Sussexes, since any sort of association with the couple—even just being a pool reporter sharing basic details and facts about their day-to-day events—means opening yourself up to unwarranted critique from, well, the world. Within hours of the announcement I would be accompanying them on tour, I was called a grifter, a mouthpiece, and a calculated piece of their PR puzzle, among other things—and that was before I even sent out a single pool report. U.K. reporters specifically were baffled about my being there; I was described as having “no news background,” my entire career discredited because of what I can only assume is the fact that I’m not white and not British. There was no mention of my yearslong dedication to uplifting Latino art and culture. Because the Colombian tour was planned to the minute, with essentially zero drama for tabloids to pick up on and sensationalize, I was the next easiest target. It all felt eerily familiar.

meghan harry colombia trip

Let me be clear, though: I’m not trying to put forth a woe-is-me narrative or garner sympathy. It’s simply that the experience gave me a deeper appreciation for Archewell’s core mission of building a more fair and equitable digital world, one where we don’t thrive on punching someone’s self esteem to a pulp. I’m a 30-year-old woman who can recognize right from wrong and know when to log off for the sake of my mental health; our youth don’t all necessarily carry that same strength. It’s up to us—adults, leaders, and yes, even the Duke and Duchess of Sussex—to do our part in minimizing online hostility as much as we can.

If anything, what struck me most as a witness to the Sussexes’ operation was the intentionality they bring to the way they use their platform. Regardless of public opinion, the duke and duchess are committed to continuing acts of service. It’s not a requirement for them—after all, plenty of celebrities don’t see service as part of their role; instead, it’s a calling. That acute attention to detail—in the way they marshal their fame, the way they move about the world, and the way they choose whom to collaborate with—is what will help them make the most impact in the future.

How Costco Hacked the American Shopping Psyche

More than 100 million people visit the retailer for their groceries — and gas and TVs and gold bars and pet coffins — but saving money may not be the only motive.

Costco, which is the third largest retailer in the world, has changed how Americans shop in the last 40 years, making both bulk buying and the acquisition of big-ticket items on grocery runs a regular occurrence. Credit... Kerry Tasker for The New York Times

When it opened in 1984, the Costco on West Dimond Boulevard in Anchorage did not seem like the future of food. A glorified shed the color of stale coffee, the warehouse offered the sort of products and deals Alaskans go crazy for: mammoth quantities of staples like peanut butter and tomato sauce, along with local favorites such as caribou sausage. The state’s extreme environment and the need to travel hours or even days for groceries made it a hit right off the bat.

Today the parking lot, full of jacked-up, Thuled-out 4x4s on studded tires and mobile homes that look more like mobile fortresses, has a bit of an edge for a grocery store. There’s something edgy about the inventory, too: neoprene survival suits, meat grinders, gun safes.

Inside the vast store, overloaded shopping carts seemingly pilot themselves down the aisles. One was pushed by Gabriella Pelesasa, a teenager who was buying, among other things, a pair of whole pigs, at 45 pounds each.

As her sister sat on the cart eating a Costco hot dog, Ms. Pelesasa reported simply, “They have bigger versions of what we want.”

Though the Anchorage location, one of the retailer’s first, once seemed like a survivalist outlier, today it shows how visionary Costco was.

“In 2020, about one-quarter of the population stockpiled nonperishable foods,” said Jennifer Mapes-Christ of the market research firm Packaged Facts. Today, more than half do. Ms. Mapes-Christ said that while the pandemic was an accelerant, the trend began before that, driven by anxieties about climate change and economic instability.

A wide shot of the inside of a Costco warehouse, with check out lanes in the foreground.

In 2019, one quarter of U.S. consumers shopped at Costco. Today it is nearly one-third. Costco is the third-largest retailer in the world, behind only Amazon and Walmart.

But the success of Costco goes far beyond hoarding. The company has hacked the psyche of the American consumer, appealing to both the responsible-shopping superego (“Twelve cans of tuna for $18!”) and the buy-it-now id (“I deserve that 98-inch flat screen”).

Ostensibly, Costco is a discount store, a place to save money and stretch your grocery dollar, but it is also an aspirational shopping experience, feeding that most American of appetites: conspicuous consumption.

Few companies have greater influence over what we eat (or wear, or fuel our cars with, or use for personal hygiene). Costco dominates multiple categories of the food supply — beef, poultry, organic produce, even fine wine from Bordeaux, which it sells more of than any retailer in the world. It is the arbiter of survival for millions of producers, including more than a million cashew farmers in Africa alone. (Costco sells half the world’s cashews.) Its private label, Kirkland, generates more revenue than towering brands like Nike and Coca-Cola.

For all its success, the company is not well understood. The top brass are insular and secretive. And beyond quarterly reports, Costco rarely discloses anything of its inner workings.

But to Charlie Munger, the billionaire investor and Warren Buffett’s right hand at Berkshire Hathaway, the balance sheet speaks for itself. In one of his last interviews before he died last year , he was succinct: “It is a perfect damn company.”

‘Everything was about trust’

Costco has often been likened to a cult, in part because once members — 134 million worldwide — enter the fold, they rarely leave.

Indeed, devotion to the brand is so avid it has inspired tributes on social media, bits on late-night shows by celebrities hoping to seem relatable and even a book, “ The Joy of Costco .”

At a time when Americans increasingly view big brands as predatory monopolies or fumbling, broken-down legacies, Costco is revered for its high wages, attentive customer service and “deep commitment to integrity,” said Jeremy Smith, the president of Launchpad, an Oregon-based food brand incubator that specializes in placing products at Costco.

Whether Costco is a cult or not, its spiritual founder was a Bronx-born lawyer with utopian ideals and strict morals.

Sol Price, born in 1916, was the son of garment workers from Minsk, and belonged to the generation of displaced Jews and other Europeans who thrived in New York’s small businesses — the delis, candy shops and pawnshops of the Depression and postwar years. In the 1920s, the family moved to San Diego, where he went to high school.

After law school at the University of Southern California, Mr. Price started his career representing grocers and other merchants. With the temperament of a shopkeeper who obsesses over his customers and fusses over the smallest of details, in the 1950s Mr. Price began converting empty San Diego warehouses into members-only bazaars where for a small fee, shoppers could get everything from hosiery to cigarettes at wholesale prices. The key to the business, called FedMart, was simple: keep members renewing year after year.

In 2003, Mr. Price described his philosophy to Fortune magazine as “How do we sell stuff at the lowest markup?” The overriding goal, he said, was “to look at everything from the standpoint of, is it really being honest with the customer?”

Mr. Price had a gift for connecting with shoppers at a time of exploding prosperity and social change, but paradoxically, one of his rules was not making too much money.

“He grew up in a family of socialists. He was a capitalist. He liked to make money, but he was pro-union, pro-labor, pro-little guy,” said David Schwartz, who co-wrote “The Joy of Costco” with his wife, Susan. “Everything was about trust. He would rather lose your business than your trust.”

Through a series of mergers over the years, Sol Price’s FedMart became what we know as Costco in the 1990s. To an uncanny degree for a modern corporation, the company, now headquartered in Issaquah, Wash., has remained true to Mr. Price’s vision. It is still relationship-minded, and members seem satisfied, renewing at a rate of 93 percent . Last quarter, the membership fees accounted for $1.12 billion, about two-thirds of Costco’s $1.68 billion total net income . The dependence, in other words, remains mutual.

Wall Street also likes what Costco does, especially the dependable cash flow that comes from membership. Occasionally, shareholders feel neglected — in 2004, an analyst with Deutsche Bank complained that Costco was “ overly generous ” with its employee benefits, saying, “Public companies need to care for shareholders first.” But few complain about the returns.

“I did the calculation once,” Mr. Schwartz said. “The stock price has grown 17 percent annually since the founding.”

‘A giant ecosystem’

Four thousand miles south of Anchorage, in Sugar Land, Texas, no one flies in by bush plane to shop. But in this swampy Houston suburb, life orbits around Costco just the same.

The site of a former prison farm for the sugar industry, Sugar Land has transformed in recent years into an interlocking complex of master-planned communities. In June, Costco opened Warehouse No. 882, its third in the area, on a prime piece of land.

On opening day, the al-Abadi family stood at the entrance, trailed by a long line of members waiting since dawn, despite the punishing heat.

Shariah al-Abadi, who came with a shopping list in mind (“butter, oil, the essentials”) and the intention to stick to it, epitomized one type of Costco member. Her teenage daughter Fatima typified another: She was there for the possibility of surprise. For months, as the new warehouse rose from the mud, so had Fatima’s anticipation. After an hour shopping in the new store, mother and daughter checked out with a cart barely containing the day’s haul, including a six-foot-tall teddy bear.

“We’ll be back,” sighed Ms. al-Abadi, who said she goes to Costco “twice a week. Sometimes more.”

Like Anchorage, Sugar Land is home to a rapidly growing Asian American population (largely Indian and Pakistani American in Sugar Land), which Costco is eager to serve, despite the challenge of operating across a nation of wildly varying local tastes and traditions.

“Costco knows what’s going on in Texas because they have an office there,” Mr. Smith said. “It’s very astute. They’re one of the few retailers that will allow a brand to go into just one building and test their product.”

As a result, Costco is able to pick up on trends and send intel back to Issaquah. “It’s a giant ecosystem,” said Mr. Smith, if also one dependent on human capital — the expertise of warehouse managers. Costco tends to promote from within, inculcating personnel with the company’s idiosyncratic culture for decades, if not entire careers. Many of the company’s top employees began as baggers or food handlers.

That limited Costco’s expansion in the past. For many years the company declined to open new warehouses at the rate Wall Street wanted, because of management concerns that the facilities were too challenging to operate.

@photogami Sus Foods at @Costco Wholesale you're too afraid to try! The lucky taro premium musang king durian is not $15.99 and I think it could be a great entry point for anyone wanting to try it #costco #thesushiguy #durian #fruit #foodreview ♬ original sound - The Sushi Guy

This concern seems to have waned, however. Costco now opens about 30 warehouses a year, with a growing number abroad. “Overseas expansion is where the growth is coming,” Susan Schwartz said. “Right now they’ve got seven warehouses in China. But they could have 150.”

East Asia has indeed been fertile for Costco, with openings this year in Japan (where it already has 33 warehouses), South Korea, Australia and China. That experience has yielded dividends at home. Expertise in Taiwanese and South Korean shopping preferences translated into the availability in the United States of products like braised abalone in brown sauce, giant red sea cucumber and Chinese-style bacon — and brand loyalty from Asian Americans.

Yutack Kang, a content creator from Milpitas, Calif., with 463,000 TikTok followers, posts frequently about “sus foods at Costco you’re too afraid to try.” One of his latest : frozen durian pulp produced by Lucky Taro, a Los Angeles-based importer.

“The Asian food selection is superb,” Mr. Kang wrote in an email.

‘Costco would never’

By and large, Americans do not trust corporations . But when asked which companies they do trust, they consistently rank Costco near the top.

“They’re selling the same food everyone else is selling,” Mr. Smith said. “It’s not like the products are magical. But they created a culture.”

Sol Price wanted Costco members to feel respected and smart. The company remains known for its no-questions-asked return policy, high-quality products and cheerful customer service. Employees are paid significantly better (an average of $26 per hour) than their counterparts at major retailers (an average $17 per hour). That helps create “a stable, motivated, capable team,” said Zeynep Ton, a professor at the M.I.T. Sloan School of Management.

Perhaps most important is Costco’s abiding reputation for low prices.

For Kirkland products, for instance, Ms. Ton said “they don’t mark up anything more than 14 or 15 percent.” This includes Costco’s flagship product, the wildly popular $1.50 hot-dog-and-soda combo, which has cost the same since 1985. It’s not publicly known whether the company makes money on the 200 million hot dogs it sells each year, but the pricing is widely seen as brilliant marketing.

Another, less obvious way Costco keeps faith with its members is by not selling shelf space. “Many retailers ask suppliers to pay for a position in a store,” said Mark Stovin, a former Costco executive who now works for OSMG , a leading food broker. “Costco would never do that.”

Mr. Stovin said Costco also does something almost none of its competitors do: restrain itself in mining customer data. “They have a number for every member, which could be trackable, traceable, and they could certainly dive into that,” Mr. Stovin said. “They really haven’t.”

It appears the company may be loosening up: Costco recently announced that it would join companies with less consumer-friendly reputations like Uber in starting a retail media network , serving ads to members based on their purchasing histories. (The company declined to say what platforms those ads might appear on. In a further shift, that effort will be led by an outsider, a veteran marketer from Walmart.)

Costco remains reluctant to embrace technology — it was a latecomer to e-commerce, for instance — which may be attributable to the spirit of Mr. Price, who commanded managers to step away from their computers.

“If you’re a senior manager, your job is to interact with members,” Mr. Schwartz said. “They expect senior people to be on the floor all the time.”

That ethos goes all the way to the top.

At the Sugar Land opening, Ron Vachris, who in January became Costco’s chief executive, just the third in the company’s 42-year history, could be seen chatting with floor personnel and inspecting the frozen tilapia. Hundreds of Costco employees, who are known for exuberant loyalty, had driven from as far away as Baton Rouge, La., to celebrate and shake hands with their new boss.

Mr. Vachris, who started as a forklift operator in 1982, greeted employees and customers warmly, seemingly willing to hang out all morning. Approached by a reporter, however, he handed over his business card and retreated into a corporate cadence. (“Texas has been a great state to us. We’re excited to have another building here.”) Subsequent requests for an interview were declined.

Costco executives are known for avoiding the press, which contributes to the company mystique. “They have amazing discipline,” Ms. Ton said. “If you go on LinkedIn, you won’t find much information about their executives.” And the company has no media relations office.

Because of Costco’s secrecy, judging whether the company lives up to its own professed standards can be a challenge.

“It would be interesting to know more about how they use their data,” said Raghu Iyengar, a professor of marketing at the Wharton School.

Since almost nothing is known publicly about Costco’s internal workings, he said, even its sterling reputation for low prices cannot be verified. To determine whether Costco’s prices are in fact “selling stuff at the lowest markup,” the company would need to be less guarded.

'Treasure Hunt Atmosphere’

Situated between a defunct strip club, Brooklyn’s industrial waterfront and a raucous, sludge-oozing elevated expressway, Costco Warehouse No. 318 is low on sparkle but hums with manic energy. The Sunset Park location seems to have set aside shelf space for every immigrant group in Brooklyn. Beyond that, though, this could be a Costco anywhere. That works to Costco’s advantage.

One way the company strokes the value-driven superegos of its members is simply with the presentation of its warehouses. With their exposed wiring, minimal sunlight and nary a Spotify playlist, the warehouses are, well, warehouses, with fluorescent lighting and bad acoustics, designed to be built in a hurry. (The 3.5-acre Sugar Land building, for example, took only four months to assemble.)

That no-frills presentation transmits a reassuring signal of benign intent: We’re not trying to seduce you. Which is its own kind of come-on.

“The customer walks in the door, and immediately there is a perception of value,” said Paco Underhill, the author of “ Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping .” “The perception of value means that as someone walks in, discretionary purchases take on a different mantle than they might at Kroger, Target or Macy’s. People go, ‘I would never think about buying that. But if I did, this is the place to get it.’”

For all its piety, the last thing Costco wants is for shoppers to stick to a budget. On the contrary, it wants them to return to the parking lot balancing a wobbly heap of products they had no intention of buying — a strategy known as “the Costco effect.”

“You’ve heard the phrase,” Mr. Vachris said on an earnings call in May. “People come in to spend $100 and walk out with $300.”

“We have created a treasure-hunt atmosphere,” said Jim Sinegal, the previous Costco chief executive, in an address to San Diego State University business students in 2017. “We try to create a sense of urgency, that if you see the product there, you better buy it, because chances are they won’t be there next time.”

In recent years, the treasure-hunt offerings have included Burberry shoulder bags ($1,000) and bottles of Romanée-Conti wine (a four-pack for $40,000). Last year the retailer even began offering one-ounce gold bars for about $2,000, which typically sell out within hours. (It has been estimated that Costco sells some $200 million in gold a month.)

And this manufactured circle of desire and regret works.

“I love Costco,” said Erica Rualo, a content strategist at Chase Bank, who has shopped at the Sunset Park warehouse. “But I hate the feeling of ‘I wish I had bought that,’ because now it’s gone. Or ‘I should have bought more of that.’”

Strictly speaking, Costco can still answer Sol Price’s question “Is it really being honest with the customer?” with a “Yes.” But at this point the spirit of his edict may have been lost to its letter.

It would be hard to argue that Costco buyers don’t know what they are getting into. After all, they have to ferry the cart with the seven-foot artificial tree, the solar panel, the steel pet coffin and the three-month supply of Belgian mini-cream puffs back to the car.

“The idea is that you don’t feel that these are temptations,” said Ayelet Fishbach, a behavioral psychologist at the University of Chicago, Booth School of Business. “You’re getting a great deal.”

But, she added, “The question is, Do you actually need this? You probably don’t.”

We’ve currently got a bunch of iconic animal records lying unclaimed, as well as ones that haven’t been broken in years.

Your pet could be a record breaker!

Tallest horse

Tallest horse Big Jake with his owner

We don’t currently have a tallest horse living .

The record was last held by Big Jake, who lived at Smokey Hollow Farms in Poynette, Wisconsin, USA.

The Belgian draft horse claimed the title at the age of nine, in January 2010, when he measured in at 210.19 cm (20.3 hands) without shoes.

Big Jake sadly died in 2021, aged 20.

To be considered, your horse has to be at least six years old and measurements, from the base of the foot of the front leg in a straight line to the withers, must be taken by a qualified vet.

Shortest horse

We haven’t had a shortest living horse (female) since Thumbelina back in 2006.

Smallest horse Thumbelina standing next to an average sized horse

She was a miniature sorrel brown mare who measured 44.5 cm (17.5 in) to the withers, which is the minimum requirement for anyone hoping their horse could claim the record.

She was owned by Kay and Paul Goessling (Both USA) and lived with them on the Goose Creek Farm Inc, St Louis, Missouri, USA.

Horses have to be at least six years old and must be measured by a vet.

Tallest dogs

The records for tallest dog living (male) and tallest dog living (female) currently lie unclaimed.

The female record was last held by Lizzie , who lived in Fort Myers, Florida, USA, with her owners.

Tallest female dog Lizzie

The Great Dane measured 96.41 cm (3 ft 1 in) tall in 2014.

The male record was last held by Great Dane Kevin , who stood at 97 cm (3 ft 2 in) tall when he was measured in West Des Moines, Iowa, USA, in 2024.

Kevin tragically died not long after becoming a record holder.

Tallest dog Kevin standing on his hind legs

Dogs must be at least one year old to be considered for these records.

Surfing dog

We haven’t had a record-breaking canine surfer since Abbie Girl.

She achieved the longest wave surfed by a dog (open water) at Ocean Beach Dog Beach in San Diego, California, USA, in 2011.

Abbie Girl the dog surfing

She surfed 107.2 m (351.7 ft).

Any dog being considered for this record must be at least one year old.

Longest cat whiskers

The record for longest cat whiskers hasn’t been broken since 2005 when Missi, a Maine coon who lived in Iisvesi, Finland with her owner Kaija Kyllönen.

Missi the cat and her long whiskers

She had a whisker that measured 19 cm (7.5 in) long.

A cat must be at least one year old to be considered for this record, and measurements must be taken from the bottom of the whisker to the tip.

The whisker must be intact.

Longest dog tail

No pooch has been deemed to have the longest tail on a dog since 2015.

Keon, owned by Ilse Loodts (Belgium), had a tail that measured 76.8 cm (30.2 in) long.

A dog must be at least one year old to be considered for this title.

Longest rabbit

We haven’t seen a longest rabbit living record holder since Darius in 2010.

The Flemish giant rabbit, owned by Annette Edwards (UK), was 129 cm (4 ft 3 in).

Longest rabbit Darius held by his owner

A rabbit must be at least 18 months old to be considered for this record and measurements are to be taken from the tip of the foot of the front leg horizontally in a straight line to the tip of the foot of the back leg.

Longest rabbit ears

No bunny has ever held the record for longest ears on a living rabbit .

A rabbit must be at least 18 months old to be considered for this record title.

Ears should be measured from the head where the ear joins the skull to the top of the ear in a straight line.

"Mariana, the time will come when you will apologise to the entire army for what you have done, I hope in court!", he added.

Six people are now known to have died following the Russian guided bomb attack on Kharkiv, local authorities have said.

Kharkiv mayor Ihor Terekhov said one child was killed in a playground and three people were killed in a 12-storey apartment block that caught fire as a result of the strike.

The Ukrainian authorities did not give the circumstances in which the two other people died in the strikes, which hit four areas of the city.

As well as those people who died, at least 55 others were injured, officials said.

About 20 of the injured were in severe condition, according to regional governor Oleh Syniehubov.

Top Ukrainian officials have begun a visit to Washington, the Ukrainian presidential office has said.

The delegation includes economy minister Yulia Svyrydenko and defence minister Rustem Umerov.

"We are working in Washington... We are grateful to our partners for their support," the president's chief of staff Andriy Yermak said on Telegram .

The visit comes amid Volodymyr Zelenskyy's renewed a call on Western allies to allow Ukraine to use long-range Western weapons to attack Russian military air bases.

Kyiv says that the most effective way to counter Russian strikes is to target Russian planes, not the bombs themselves.

The US ambassador to Ukraine has called on Russia to be "held accountable for these war crimes" in Kharkiv.

In a statement on X, Bridget A Brink said "Russia struck an apartment building in Kharkiv with a guided aerial bomb, killing several and injuring many, including children".

Kharkiv has been the focus of heavy Russian bombing throughout the war, although there had been a drop in intensity in recent weeks, possibly related to a surprise invasion launched by Ukrainian forces into Russia's Kursk region.

Ukrainian authorities said today's attack involved five aerial guided bombs launched from planes in Russia's Belgorod region, also known as "glide bombs" which are fitted with a navigation system taking them to their targets.

The footage below shows the aftermath of the attack in Kharkiv.

The EU has rebuffed a request from Kyiv for the bloc to train Ukrainian soldiers inside the war-torn country, but will train them as close as possible to Ukrainian territory, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has said.

The EU has trained some 60,000 Ukrainian soldiers inside the economic union's borders since Russia's invasion of the country and will aim to train 15,000 more by the end of the year, Mr Borrell said.

Kyiv has asked the EU to consider some training inside Ukraine, arguing this would be faster, more cost-effective, and logistically easier than inside the EU.

But multiple EU countries are reluctant to deploy troops inside Ukraine, expressing concerns about their safety and questioning whether such a move would divert Ukrainian forces from their core mission, in order to protect trainers.

Mr Borrell told reporters: "Some member states were ready, others reluctant.

"Finally, we decided that the training will be as close as possible to Ukraine, but not in Ukrainian territory."

Ukraine has urged Mongolia to arrest Vladimir Putin on an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant when he visits next week.

The court issued an arrest warrant in March of last year against Mr Putin, accusing him of the war crime of illegally deporting hundreds of children from Ukraine.

The Kremlin has dismissed the accusation, saying it is politically motivated.

The warrant obliges the court's 124 member states, including Mongolia, to arrest Mr Putin and transfer him to The Hague for trial if he sets foot on their territory.

Now, the Ukrainian foreign ministry has called on the ICC to arrest the Russian leader when he visits Mongolia on 3 September.

"We call on the Mongolian authorities to comply with the mandatory international arrest warrant and transfer Putin to the International Criminal Court in the Hague," the ministry said on Telegram.

Asked earlier today whether Moscow was concerned that Mongolia was a member of the ICC, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters: "No, no worries about this. We have a great dialogue with our friends from Mongolia."

Asked whether there had been discussions with Mongolian authorities about the ICC warrant, Mr Peskov added: "Obviously the visit, all of the aspects of the visit have been thoroughly discussed."

Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he held a meeting with the top military commanders of Ukraine this afternoon.

The president said that three key issues were discussed, starting with the situation on the frontlines.

Kursk invasion

Ukraine's top commander says Kyiv's forces have advanced up to 2km in their invasion of Russia's Kursk region.

Oleksandr Syrskyi briefed Mr Zelenskyy via video link and said Ukrainian forces took control of 5sq km of Russian territory.

Discussions were also had over the next set of reinforcements in the area, which Mr Zelenskyy said was "extremely important for strengthening our positions".

General Syrskyi also briefed the president on the ongoing fighting near Pokrovsk, which Ukraine is trying desperately to hold in the face of advancing Russian troops.

Preparing for new academic year

The meeting also covered how Ukraine will deal with the new academic year for schoolchildren, which starts next week.

Mr Zelenskyy heard reports from Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, internal affairs minister Ihor Klymenko and education and science minister Oksen Lisovyi.

The president said discussions covered security issues, as well as the construction of bomb shelters.

Energy problems

The third key issue addressed was the current state of Ukraine's energy grid following a week of heavy Russian strikes.

Mr Zelenskyy heard analysis of energy issues, including the potential construction of protective structures around key energy infrastructure.

Images are emerging of the aftermath of today's attack on Kharkiv.

Russia denies deliberately targeting civilians, but thousands have been killed and wounded in its strikes during its invasion.

The scenes come as Volodymyr Zelenskyy renews a call on Western allies to allow long-range attacks on Russian military air bases after the attack.

The number of people killed in a Russian strike on Kharkiv has risen to five.

Meanwhile, 40 people have been injured after the Russian missile hit a residential building and playground, according to the regional governor Oleh Syniehubov.

Earlier, we reported that a 14-year-old girl was among the dead.

Day trip to Bremerton: Blackberry Festival and more things to do

How to seattle.

A Labor Day weekend expected to be in the high 70s and sunny nearly begs for a final summer day trip. Here’s one option just an hour’s ferry ride from Seattle: Head to Bremerton for a taste of a sailor’s life, waterfront dining and cute shops, a peaceful nature outing and, if you visit Aug. 31-Sept. 2, a celebration of “all things blackberry” at the city’s longest-running festival.

With Bremerton’s Blackberry Festival coming up, we asked readers who know the area and Downtown Bremerton Association Executive Director Jessica Combs what else visitors should experience, and organized their suggestion into a few options for outings. Whether you make it to the festival or not, here are some loved-by-locals spots to explore in and around the Navy town.

More How to Seattle

  • Things to do in Ballard: 3 ways locals recommend spending a day
  • What’s new and how to save at the WA State Fair this year
  • Seattle staycations for the rest of summer, shared by locals

The Blackberry Festival

Most Washingtonians have probably enjoyed ripe summer blackberries off the vine, but have you ever tried blackberry barbecue sauce, a corn dog dipped in blackberry vinaigrette or homemade blackberry soda?

Take your pick from these treats, along with staples such as berry-flavored wine and jam, at the Blackberry Festival on the Bremerton Boardwalk and Second Street in downtown Bremerton. About 25 food vendors, including local restaurants, will provide regular-menu items and special festival offerings.

Another big draw to the festival is a music slate that highlights Kitsap County’s “really strong music scene” with mostly local acts, said festival manager Sunny Saunders. This year’s lineup includes blues-rock singer Skinny Blue, acoustic duo Megan and Heidi and 10-piece soul and R&B group The Highsteppers. Little ones can enjoy magician and circus performances, face painting and more in the kids area, and more than 100 vendors will be selling crafts and other goods.

The free festival starts at 11 a.m. each day over Labor Day weekend, and ends at 8 p.m. on Aug. 31, 7 p.m. on Sept. 1 and 6 p.m. on Sept. 2. Visit blackberryfestival.org for more info.

Explore the waterfront

Festival or not, Bremerton’s waterfront has several worthwhile stops reflecting its status as a Navy city.

Fresh off the ferry, stroll down Bremerton’s boardwalk to the USS Turner Joy , a retired warship-turned-museum. (Admission is $22, with youth, senior and military discounts available.) It’s a family-friendly stop, said James Patton, one of several readers who recommended it: “Our 9-year-old grandson and 6-year-old granddaughter really enjoyed learning how sailors lived on ship, and exploring every nook and cranny the ship offered. It’s a good way to spend an hour or two that will interest most people of all ages.”

On the other end of the boardwalk, you can get a taste of life as a sailor and learn about what it took to establish a naval station in Puget Sound for free at the Puget Sound Navy Museum . Make sure to check out the Harborside Fountain Park next to it, too.

“It’s the perfect spot to kick off your guests’ visit, with stunning views of the waterfront and the Naval Shipyard in the background,” said reader Kerri Bozeman.

Head across the bridge to dine and shop

Hungry yet? A cluster of delicious options is a short, scenic walk away, in the neighborhood of Manette .

In Bozeman’s words, “No visit to Bremerton is complete without a walk across the Manette Bridge ,” with its “picturesque views of the water and downtown Bremerton.”

Stroll a half-hour northeast and across the Port Washington Narrows waterway to step into Manette, which Combs, of the Downtown Bremerton Association, compared to being the Capitol Hill of Bremerton, with “its own quirky, unique personality.”

Immediately off the bridge, get lunch at the Boat Shed Restaurant , a waterfront restaurant with seafood, steak and more, plus a large outdoor deck and gorgeous views. All sorts of restaurants and local shops can be explored nearby, but some well-loved favorites include: Larry & Kristi’s Bakery (“Local mainstay for the BEST doughnuts. Get there early because they sell out!” advised Olivia Slack), Saboteur Bakery (readers raved about the quiche and croissants), the gift shop Life in Mauve and the locally sourced restaurant Hound + Bottle .

Embark on an outdoors adventure

Time to take in some of Kitsap Peninsula’s greenery! Nature lovers have a few options within a 15- to 30-minute drive of Bremerton.

From Manette, you can drive 15 minutes west to reach the trailhead for Dickerson Falls . The 2.3-mile loop leading past a waterfall generally takes about an hour to hike and is also popular for horseback riding and mountain biking.

Or, continue 20 minutes to the Gold Creek Trail to hike to the summit of Green Mountain which is, as the Washington Trails Association puts it, “the Kitsap Peninsula’s go-to after work destination, whether for hiking, trail running or mountain biking.” This 5-mile round-trip hike offers views of Seattle, Puget Sound and Hood Canal, on a clear day.

Northeast of Bremerton, closer to Manette, Illahee State Park offers 75 acres of forest and beach, including the only old-growth forest left in Kitsap County , with towering cedar and fir trees.

Dinner and a show (or a stroll)

Two restaurants were recommended more than any others — and both happen to be near popular Bremerton parks, should you care for a postmeal stroll.

Restaurant Lola is self-described on its website as “Bremerton’s culinary destination” and Combs agrees that it is one of the most essential foodie stops to make. “Their menu is always changing based off of the season,” she said. “It’s a small menu, but it’s so, so good.” (Make sure to check its hours: The popular spot is open for dinner Wednesday-Sunday and for brunch Saturday and Sunday.) A 15-minute walk up Lebo Boulevard gets you to Lions Park , which Deborah McDaniel lauded for its “gorgeous vistas and great beachcombing at low tide.”

For an evening of entertainment, locals recommend a few signature spots: The Charleston on North Callow Avenue for live music Thursday, Friday or Saturday; Roxy Theatre , a nonprofit cinema that hosts community events and live music as well as showing movies; and Rodeo Drive-In Theatre , “the largest drive-in theater in the Pacific Northwest,” according to its website.

More ideas, from Seattle Times readers:

If your time in Bremerton isn’t yet up, here are some more local adventures for your list:

  • North Callow Avenue features a number of unique spots in addition to The Charleston, including Cafe Corvo , McGavin’s Bakery and the typewriter store Typewriter Fever .
  • Bremerton’s First Friday Art Walk is held in downtown, Charleston, Lebo and Manette, 5-8 p.m. every month.
  • The Bremerton Vintage Flea market offers all sorts of vintage and handmade goods every Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Hiked the Camino? Here are 7 pilgrimages to consider for your next challenge

Pilgrimage routes like the St Olav Waterway from Finland to Sweden let seekers give thanks, pray or find inner peace and purpose. Sergi Reboredo/VW Pics/Universal Images Group via Getty Images

A sacred path to spiritual renewal. A journey from head to heart. A test of endurance. A life-changing road to enlightenment.

Since time immemorial, people have gone on pilgrimages to seek forgiveness, give thanks, pray or find inner peace and purpose in times of change and crisis. St Augustine nailed it 1500 years ago when he said: “ solvitur ambulando ” (“it is solved by walking”). After all, what could be more intuitive than putting one foot in front of another, following a clear path to a goal? A pilgrimage is a metaphor for life.

And across the world, pilgrimages are booming.

In 2023, a record-breaking 446,073 pilgrims walked the Camino de Santiago to the shrine of the Apostle St James. But this well-trodden path is merely the first among equals among the world’s great pilgrimage routes.

Religious or not, you will be profoundly touched by the natural beauty, history and unique insights into culture and spirituality on these seven epic pilgrimages – slow-travel adventures taking you from the mist-draped mountains of Japan to the island-speckled south coast of Finland.

1. St Olav Waterway, Sweden and Finland

Best for island hopping and sea views

To slip away from civilization and back to nature, the island-hopping, coast-hugging St Olav Waterway that links Turku in Finland with Eckerö (Åland) in Sweden is the dream. A rousing 10-day romp of 215km (134 miles), this is a pilgrimage trail like few others. For starters, you don’t have to walk it – you can cycle or kayak if you prefer, with ferries joining the gaps.

Whatever your mode of transport, look forward to stupendous views of sea and sky. The trail skips over many rocky isles and skerries as it crosses the Åland Islands , where you have the space to zone out for a spell and be at one with the blues of the Baltic and greens of the pine forest in a place silent enough to hear your own heartbeat. Bring binoculars and you might well spot migratory birds, hares, deer and the odd elk swimming from island to island.

Following the route pilgrims hiked and sailed in the Middle Ages and honoring one of the most famous Scandi saints, this route is less about showstopping highlights and more about embracing every element and sense along the way. Admire the brilliant stars as you wild camp. Take bracingly cold post-sauna dips in the sea. Stop off in tiny, timber-built villages and savor local produce for picnics at wayside farm shops.

After a week or so, you’ll discover lost rhythms and find a deeper connection with the Nordics and their wondrous nature.

Two walkers on a staircase lined by giant trees along the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route, Wakayama, Honshū, Japan

2. Kumano Kodō, Japan

Best for holy shrines and hot springs

Threading into densely wooded mountains on Japan ’s Kii Peninsula , the Kumano Kodō is a UNESCO-listed network of pilgrimage trails leading to the Kumano Sanzan, or Three Grand Shrines of Kumano. Once a sacred pilgrimage trail for enlightenment-seeking emperors and samurai, these paths have been trodden for more than a millennium.

Today, the landscape they cut through continues to pulse with a special energy. Walkers can expect ethereally lit bamboo groves, fern-flecked forests and terraced rice paddies, waterfalls plunging over cliff faces and holy mountains revered as kami (gods), Buddhist temples and Shintō shrines.

The main path to Kumano is the Nakahechi Route (Imperial Route) – a well-mapped, 68km (42-mile) journey on foot to unite mind, body and spirit through the challenge of the trail and the beauty of nature. It’s a solid four days of walking up into ragged mountains, through mist-veiled forests and along old stone paths polished smooth by pilgrims’ weary-yet-determined feet. Tea houses and simple inns provide rest and refreshment in isolated villages; you’ll want to follow centuries-old ablutions rituals by bathing in the World Heritage hot springs of Yunomine Onsen . At the end, you’ll descend to the ancient shrine of Hongu Taisha , which has the world’s biggest torii gate.

Summers on the Kii can be hot and humid and winters cold, so come in the shoulder seasons for mild days and few crowds – plus spring cherry blossoms or glorious autumn foliage.

A pilgrim with a backpack walks through a masonry arch along the Via Francigena, near Vetralla

3. Via Francigena, Italy

Best for heights and hill towns

In the saintly hall of fame, few shine brighter than St Francis of Assisi, born in his namesake  town in Umbria in 1181. Founder of the Franciscan order, this most venerated of Italian saints lived a life of utmost poverty and penance – we’re talking rolling around in thorn bushes to resist temptation, wearing a ragged habit (he only owned one), eating barely nothing and sleeping on stone. St Francis loved nature, saved animals and worked many a medieval miracle, from walking on water to healing the sick and raising the dead. As saints go, few can touch him.

Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2024, the Via Francigena follows in his devout footsteps. If you thought the Camino was challenging, try this 1200km (745-mile) pilgrimage from  Canterbury ’s Gothic, UNESCO-listed cathedral (where Thomas Becket was killed in 1170) to Santa Maria di Leuca in Puglia at Italy ’s sun-scorched heel. As you tramp from England to France , Switzerland and Italy, the weather gradually warms and skies get bluer. The landscapes that unfold are cinematically beautiful: vineyards, fast-flowing rivers and forests, olive-cloaked hills and snow-frosted Alps. In between, abbeys, castles, medieval towns and all the wonders of  Rome await. On the lonely stretches, a sense of spirituality endures.

Two pilgrims walk the Portuguese Camino de Santiago along the coast in A Guarda

4. The Portuguese Way, Portugal

Best for an alternative route to Santiago

If the idea of Santiago appeals – yet throngs of pilgrims on the busy Camino Francés (French Way) don’t, there are other ways you can set out and earn your official Compostela certificate. While 219,785 blister-footed pilgrims trekked across the Pyrenees through France and Northern Spain to Santiago’s resplendent medieval cathedral in 2023, just 88,717 came via Portugal . Cue the popular-but-still-less-crowded Caminho Português (Portuguese Way), a spiritually uplifting, month-long, 620km (385-mile) stomp from the Portuguese capital of Lisbon to Santiago de Compostela .

Wild Atlantic coastlines, forested hills and national parks stitch together time-lost villages and some of Portugal’s most outstanding cultural sites – from alley-packed, moodily atmospheric  Coimbra , medieval capital for more than a century and home to the UNESCO-listed university that’s the country’s oldest; to convent-topped Tomar , a Knights Templar stronghold; and Moorish Santarém. Stop at beaches for boat-fresh shellfish and vibrant sunsets.

The trail is well-signposted and moderately challenging (expect inclines but no real climbs); the weather tends to be agreeable, too, with spring and autumn the ideal times to walk. Tip: if you want to shave off a bit of time, just hike the 265km (165 miles) from Porto . From here, it takes “only” 10 to 12 days to reach Santiago.

5. St Paul Trail, Türkiye

Best for history and slow travel

The apostle St Paul hailed from Tarsus and spread the Christian faith in Asia Minor in the first century. Honoring this foundational early saint and tracing his footsteps as he embarked on his first missionary journey to Anatolia, the St Paul Trail presents a deep dive into a rural side of  Türkiye  that few visitors get to see. You’ll need to be fit for the 500km (310-mile), at-times-tough hike from the ancient city of Perge (just north of Antalya on the Mediterranean coast) to Yalvaç near Lake Eğirdir. The path is well marked, with handy white-and-red stripes on rocks and trees.

History lovers will be in their element here, as the route picks its way along stone-paved Roman roads, medieval paths and old shepherd trails, taking in aqueducts and ancient theaters; Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman towns and cities; and ruined temples, castles, mosques and churches. But the wild beauty of the Taurus Mountains also touches deep: pine, beech and juniper forests, high pastures, canyons and valleys, glass-clear streams and turquoise falls. In between are hamlets where the pace of life is refreshingly slow, where cheese and yogurt are still made the traditional way, and in which you can momentarily forget which century we live in.

Avoid the blistering heat of summer and opt instead for spring or autumn. April, May, September and October are fine times to hike this month-long trail, along which you’ll be staying in private homes, at simple B&Bs or under canvas.

Pilgrims descend the narrow stairway with majestic views of sunrise from the the top of Adams Peak, Sri Lanka

6. Adam’s Peak, Sri Lanka

Best sacred mountain sunrise

Soaring high above the lush green tea plantations and forests of Sri Lanka ’s cloud-wreathed Central Highlands, cone-shaped, 2243m(7360ft)-high Adam’s Peak (Śrī Pāda) is the country’s most sacred mountain. Scrambling up 5200 steps to the top is a rite of passage for pilgrims of different faiths, who flock here from the world over to pray and express gratitude.

The name refers to the giant footprint-shaped marking at the summit, which some say is where Adam first set foot on earth when he was cast out of the Garden of Eden. Buddhists believe it was left by Buddha en route to paradise, while Hindus insist it is Shiva’s doing. No matter the religion, this holiest of peaks is the end goal of a long, sweaty, back-breaking climb from the village of Dalhousie (allow around 8 hours for the up-and-back trek).

Religious or not, climbing Adam’s Peak is a spiritual experience – and proof that you don’t need to hike for days or weeks to experience the transformative power of pilgrimage. Begin at night as the stars twinkle, joining fellow pilgrims with head-torches flickering like fireflies to climb the steps. You’ll then arrive at the summit as day breaks and sunrise touches the island like a golden blessing. The pilgrimage season begins on poya (full moon) day in December and runs until the Vesak festival in May.

Waves hit the rocky coast below Strumble Head lighthouse, Wales

7. Wexford Pembrokeshire Pilgrim Way, Ireland and Wales

Best for wild waves and Celtic spirit

Just imagine for a second how St Aidan must have felt back in the sixth century as he trod, staff in hand, along the wave-whipped shores of the Atlantic from Ferns in Ireland to St Davids in Wales to meet his mentor St David.

Now drop yourself right in the moment.

The recently launched Wexford-Pembrokeshire Pilgrim Way is a tale of two saints and two Celtic lands. Heading up and over gorse-clad cliff and along dune-flanked beach for 260km (162 miles) and crossing the Irish Sea by ferry, this pilgrimage trail enthralls with cultural heritage in the form of ruined abbeys, romantic castles, Celtic wells, Marian shrines and the clincher: magnificent St David’s Cathedral , which hosts the relics of Wales’ beloved patron saint.

Believer or not, nature is sure to grab you. In what the Celts would have described as a “liminal space” – where the gap between heaven and earth is small – these coastal landscapes touch the soul. Feel the spiritual connection with the living world standing atop wild, storm-smashed, lighthouse-topped Strumble Head, where seabirds (fulmars, razorbills, guillemots, peregrines) dive and screech while dolphins and seals splash offshore.

Broken up into nine bite-sized day walks of roughly 14 miles (22km) apiece and digitally way-marked, the trail is easy enough to hike and navigate, with overnight accommodation offered at sanctuaries, farms and hostels.
