With a year-round warm climate, expect hot weather when visiting the Philippines at any time of the year. Sea breezes prevail in the coastal regions between November and February, so travel during this time if you wish to take the edge off the heat. January to May are considered the optimum times to visit though, as it is best to avoid the typhoon season which runs from July to October and involves heavy rain, flooding and high winds.

Consisting of more than 7,000 islands, the Philippines archipelago is located in the South-East of  Asia , in between the South China Sea and the Philippine Sea. Being a part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, the Philippines is home to many active volcanoes and a staggering amount of biodiversity, with thousands of plant, mammal, fish and bird species living on land and in the sea. As a very mountainous country, the Philippines is dotted with numerous peaks, which give way to deep valleys that are often studded with rivers and streams. Tropical rainforest occupies much of the landmass, with most of the population living on the low lying coastal areas.

Festivals and events

With a history dating back to 1210, this flamboyant festival is considered one of the Philippines' best. Think massive ostentatious costumes, loud drumming, floats of parading dancers, riotous crowds and a healthy dose of partying, and you've got Ati-Atihan—the Philippines' best shot at Rio Carnaval.

Grand Cordillera Festival

Baguio reserves the fourth last week of November to celebrate life and local culture with ethnic songs, dance, costumes and food. This festival spreads peace and tolerance and provides an interesting snapshot of the lives of the ethnic people of the northern Luzon area.

Iloilo City gets its chance to party with its own version of Ati-Atihan. City streets are decked out with colorful banners, street stalls sizzle with barbecued pork and chicken, and costumed dancers compete for glory.

Feast of Our Lady of Candles

This annual display of epic religious pageantry features a procession of the patroness, fiesta queen and court through the streets and town center of Jaro. Locals carry candles and a statue of the Virgin Mary to the town cathedral, where crowds of people wait. This spirited and vibrant festival is a great introduction to Filipino culture and religious celebrations.

Obando Fertility Festival

Credit cards are usually accepted by large hotels, restaurants, shops and tourist-orientated retailers, but less so by smaller vendors like small, family-run restaurants, market stalls and guesthouses. Be sure to carry enough cash to cover small purchases as credit cards may not always be accepted.

What is ATM access like in the Philippines?

Travelers will be able to find ATMs that accept foreign cards in the large cities but less so in remote towns and rural areas. Be sure to have enough cash before leaving the city as ATMs may not always be available outside of metropolitan areas.

The Philippines is home to some of the most beautiful beaches and sparkling crystal blue waters in the world, including nationally protected ecosystems and extensive coral reefs . You can enjoy a fun-in-the-sun getaway on one of these many beaches, and perhaps on a private island you can call your own for a few days. The Philippines has its history on display in every city and town and on every island via its varied architecture and monuments , ranging from World War II memorials to ornate Spanish colonial-era cathedrals and buildings .

If you are visiting the Philippines for the first time, we recommend visiting the capital, Manila ; the country's first capital, Cebu , settled by Ferdinand Magellan; and the island getaway of Boracay , situated in between the two in the Philippine archipelago. We also recommend visiting idyllic El Nido on Palawan Island ; the sun-kissed Chocolate Hills of Bohol ; and Siargao in the southeast of the country.

Due to the Philippines being located in the tropics, the country has a tropical climate with little variation in seasons. The temperatures are warm throughout the year with humidity all year round. The beginning months of the year (January and February) are the best and coolest times to visit the country with refreshing weather and bright sunny days. March, April, and May become very hot and humid and the wettest months are July and August. High season starts in December and runs through April with Holy Week taking place in March. We recommend that you travel between cities and islands in the Philippines by air and by ferry . The Philippines is a large country and many places of interest to tourists are on different islands. While it is quite possible to visit just Luzon and use road-based transportation from Manila, if you want to see places like Palawan, Boracay, Cebu, and others, you must fly. Philippine Airlines is the flag carrier and connects every part of the country with jet and/or charter flights. PAL`s hubs are located at Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila, Clark International Airport near Angeles, and Mactan-Cebu International Airport. Ferries connect most provincial capitals in the islands with one another; there are regular ferries from Cebu to Bohol and other islands in the Visayas. Hundreds of ferry routes criss-cross other islands across the country as well.

The currency of the Philippines is the Philippine peso (₱). U.S. dollars are not accepted. Please be sure to have the correct currency on hand or be prepared to exchange your dollars for pesos upon arrival. Currency exchange desks can be found at many locations throughout the country. English and Filipino (Tagalog) are official languages of the Philippines. English is understood nearly everywhere in the Philippines and even if the person you are currently conversing with may not speak much of it, there will almost always be someone nearby who can assist you further. To reach Bucas Grande, it’s better to fly to Siargao or Cagayan De Oro and proceed from there. I recommend sleeping in Siargao and taking the day tour from there, but please note that while there are some great resorts over there, none of them are truly all inclusive.

Travel advisories regarding kidnapping and terrorist acts only refer to the Mindanao area, the rest of the Philippines is perfectly safe. That is of course as long as you know how to handle yourself and practice general caution.

We have sent many travelers, including solo ones, to Malapascua island which is right next to Bantayan. There are also quite a few Westerners living on that island and in Cebu in general. None of them ever had any problem or felt it was not safe.

Tennis courts are not so common here in the Philippines. Squash can be found in many hotels. From the the top of my head here are some hotels that do offer a tennis court : Shangri-La in Manila , Plantation Bay in Cebu , Donatella in Bohol .

Afterward, you can spend the rest of the day however you wish. You can explore the nearby tourist attractions or try Filipino cuisine at local restaurants. Keep in mind that you have your flight to Puerto Princesa the next day.

Day 2 - Day 2: Arrival in Puerto Princesa + Check-in

After enjoying breakfast at your hotel in Manila, check out and wait to be picked up by your designated driver. You will head back to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, where you will catch your flight to Puerto Princesa.

You’ll land at the Puerto Princesa International Airport, where another driver will be waiting for you. Once you are all set, you’ll head to your accommodations in Puerto Princesa, where you will stay for two nights. After checking in and getting settled in your room, you can explore Puerto Princesa at your own leisure.

Day 3 - Day 3: Shared Puerto Princesa Underground River Tour in Palawan with Lunch & Transfers

Take advantage of the free breakfast at your accommodations. You will be picked up by your driver and guide afterward for your free tour of the Puerto Princesa Underground River. The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and this tour will allow you to explore its caves with the assistance of a tour guide.
