Pico Wine: A Guide to One of the World’s Most Unique Wine Regions

' src=

Although people are becoming increasingly familiar with wine regions in Portugal like the Douro, the Alentejo, and the Vinho Verde region, very few people have heard of the wines from Pico . It certainly is one of the most unusual style of Portuguese wine .

Pico has a very different climate than the rest of Portugal (bananas and pineapples grow on some of the islands in The Azores ) and the volcanic soil is rich in nutrients. It is, however, not somewhere that vines should grow: when wine production first began, only 3.4% of the soil was arable. The fact that settlers were able to grow vines on Pico is considered something of a small miracle.

Pico is also probably Portugal’s most unique wine region to look at (although The Douro, with its sloping vineyards, is definitely a close second). Here, in this UNESCO World Heritage region, the vines run along the ground, on top of small black rocks (biscoitos), rather than neat rows of trellises. And, instead of large fields of vines, the vines are restricted to small squares that have black basalt stone walls built around them.

Pico’s vineyards are an incredibly unique thing to see. Pico is obviously the place to see them, and you don’t have to go far to see them: the Paisagem da Cultura da Vinha da Ilha do Pico , one of the best examples of Pico’s vineyards, is literally just metres away from Pico Airport and a short drive from Madalena.

This isn’t the only place that you can see them on Pico. My favourite area was the São Mateus on the opposite side of the island, and I was surprised to see a small vineyard next to the Cooperativa Vitivinicola Da Ilha Do Pico (CVIP) in Madalena, the main town on the island.

You can also see these vineyards on some of the other islands in the Azores. Biscoitos on Terceira, for example, is also famous for producing wines using the same method, along with Graciosa.

Why do they grow the wine like this?

currais at pico vineyard

Although Pico’s vineyards are unique and beautiful, they weren’t designed like that for aesthetics alone. There’s a practical reason as well. Necessity is the mother of all invention, after all.

The stone walls which surround the small plots (called “currais”) are there to protect the vineyards from the elements. Wind is a big concern, especially wind that comes in from the ocean and carries salt with it. Larger walls, called “jeiros” separate the land from one farmer to another.

The little rocks or biscuits on the ground are there for heating. Those little volcanic rocks heat up during the day and then stay somewhat warm during the night, which helps the grapes that sit on top of them to ripen.

A brief history of Pico’s wines

Wine growing on Pico dates back to the 15th Century and, unsurprisingly, has religious origins. The first settlers arrived on Pico in 1439 and, after about 10 years of sobriety, started producing wine.

Although production has always been small, the wine developed an international audience: when Czar Nicholas II of Russia was executed in 1917, bottles of Verdelho do Pico were found in his cellar. John Bass Dabney, the first U.S. Consul to the Azores who lived on Faial in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, also played a role in marketing Pico’s wines, particularly to the US.

Faial actually played a big role in the Pico wine industry. Soil was shipped from Faial, workers would come over from Faial during the harvest time and, because Horta had a much better port than anywhere on Pico, wines were shipped to mainland Portugal and overseas from Horta rather than Madalena.

Unfortunately, Pico’s vineyards, like most European vineyards, were affected by diseases in the late 1800s: Oidium first and then Phylloxera. Sulfur was effective against Oidium (and the vineyards are still sprayed annually to protect it against Oidium), but the only solution for Phylloxera was to switch from Verdelho grapes to the disease-resistant vines from the United States. It wasn’t until the end of the last century that growers began replanting Verdelho.

Unfortunately the diseases had a huge economic effect on the island. It wasn’t just vineyard owners who were affected but also barrel makers, sailors, basket makers, and day labourers.

Recently (since the 70s), Pico wine production has picked up again. There is a growing interest in the wines, both in mainland Portugal and internationally, and local vineyards and cooperatives are working hard to meet demand (while simultaneously increasing quality).

Currently 17 grapes are grown on Pico:

  • White grapes: Verdelho, Arinto, Pico Terrantez, Generosa, Seara Nova, Rio Grande, Viosinho, and Gouveio.
  • Red grapes: Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Saborinho, Agronómica, Tinta Roriz, and Periquita.

Whites tend to be where Pico excels, although the reds are worth a sample as well.

Visiting the vineyards

You’ll see these unique vineyards all over Pico, often very small plots, but it’s worth going to one of the bigger wine growing parts of the island to get the full experience.

Two of the main regions are:

  • Paisagem da Cultura da Vinha da Ilha do Pico ( map )
  • São Mateus ( map )

Parking is often just by the side of the road (the road is less busy at at Paisagem da Cultura da Vinha da Ilha do Pico) and there doesn’t seem to be a problem with wandering through the vineyards. Obviously, be respectful and don’t eat the grapes.

Wine museums

wine press

There are several small wine museums on Pico (and another good one on Terceira). If you’re interested in wine, it’s actually worth visiting a few of them – they often have bits of information or artefacts that the others don’t have.

  • Museu do Vinho ( map ) – The main wine museum on Pico, and somewhere where you can see a wooden wine press which dates back to the Verdelho wine phase.
  • Centro de Interpretação da Paisagem da Cultura da Vinha da Ilha do Pico ( map ) – Small wine museum that also offers tastings, has a wine press, and a working distillery.
  • Adega “A Buraca” (map) – Small wine museum, shop, and tasting space.

And, if you visit Terceira as well, be sure to visit the wine museum in Biscoitos ( map ).

Wine tastings

There are a few places around Pico where you can try the local wines.

  • Portugal by Wine – Full day tour (7 hours) that includes a visit to the wine museum near Madalena, visits to a local vineyard, and a break for lunch.
  • Cooperativa Vitivinicola Da Ilha Do Pico (CVIP) – offers several tastings per day (up to 9 wines and 3 aguardentes). Email [email protected] or call +351 912 533 243.
  • Azores Wine Company – Offers an interesting selection of different wine flights.
  • Booking Pico – Full day or half-day wine tasting tours available.

And, of course, many of the local restaurants on Pico will also stock Pico wines as well.

Buying Pico Wines

frei gigante

Buying Pico wines isn’t always easy – even on Pico itself. I visited the Cooperativa Vitivinicola Da Ilha Do Pico (CVIP) in Madalena expecting to find a huge choice of wines that I could buy but, in actual fact, they only had four white wines for sale. Outside of Portugal, and even outside of The Azores, it’s going to be even more difficult.

  • Cooperativa Vitivinicola Da Ilha Do Pico (CVIP)
  • Azores Wine Company
  • Adega “A Buraca”

Outside of Pico

  • Made in Azores – Ships to mainland Portugal and internationally.
  • Garrafeira Nacional – Wine shop in Lisbon with several outlets around the city.

Brandy & other wines produced on Pico

Brandy is also produced on Pico; from figs and also from wine. The production of brandy started on Pico roughly around the same time that producing Verdelho wine grew popular: sometime in the 18th century, when there was so much wine being produced that there was an excess, brandy was added to the wine (a technique used in Port making).

In 1766, the Royal Treasury Superintendent decided that one in every four barrels of the 2,000 wine barrels that were produced annually should be distilled to make brandy. Initially, there was a large market for Pico brandy, particularly in Brazil, but this changed when Cachaça started being produced there.

Pico Brandey can be hard to find, but you can get “Picarota” at the Cooperativa Vitivinícola da Ilha do Pico in Madalena. Made in Azores , an online shop that specialises in Azorean products, stocks this, along with a few other Azorean “aguardentes.” Made In Azores also ships internationally.

You’ve heard of Port wine, and you may have even heard of Madeira wine, but did you know that Pico produces a fortified wine as well? Licoroso wine is a late-harvest of fortified wine that’s at least 16% in strength.

Licoroso was especially popular during the 18th and 19th centuries but, like the rest of Pico’s wine industry, was affected by vine disease. And like the rest of Pico’s wine industry, Licoroso wine is getting a bit of a revival as local wine producers begin producing it again.

You can get Licoroso wine at the Cooperativa Vitivinícola da Ilha do Pico in Madalena. Czar, one of the popular brands in The Azores, shouldn’t be too hard to stumble across either. Outside of The Azores, however, it does get a little tricky but, thankfully, Made in Azores has a few options.

Vinho de Cheiro

One of the native American grapes that was introduced was Isabella. This grape was resistant to diseases, produced abundant harvests, and lead to the production of a wine that The Azores has become  famous for: Vinho de Cheiro.

Literally translated as “wine of scent,” Vinho de Cheiro is a simple and low-alcohol table wine (typically 6-10%) that’s drunk at picnics, festivals, and used in local dishes. This wine is only really available on The Azores, so be sure to try it while you’re there.

A Guide to the Wine and Wineries of Pico Island, in the Azores

By Elly Earls November 28, 2022

Some of the best wines in Portugal come from a surprising source: a remote, gusty island in the Azores

Pico Island, in the Azores, is one of the planet’s most challenging wine regions. The weather is unpredictable, the volcanic terrain makes planting nearly impossible, and the island’s centuries-old viniculture system, which has been protected by UNESCO since 2004, never fully recovered from the destruction wrought by phylloxera in the 1800s. Yet, despite these obstacles, last year the Azores Wine Company (AWC) managed to produce The Wine Advocate ’s top-rated white wine in Portugal, its Vinha dos Utras 2019.

pico island wine tour

When AWC, now led by Filipe Rocha and António Maçanita, rented a plot of land on Pico in 2014, there were only about 300 acres of vineyard being farmed using the island’s traditional system, in which growers surround small rectangular plots with volcanic rock walls called currais to protect the vines from wind and sea salt. It took a team of 30 people three years to restore an additional 300 acres at AWC, a project that required the building of more than 500 miles of rock walls. Today, even after the efforts of AWC and other ambitious vintners, there are only about 2,500 acres of fully restored traditional vineyard on the island—less than 10 percent of what once existed.

“They call us the vineyard of crazy guys,” Rocha says, laughing as we jolt through one of AWC’s vineyards in the sort of 4X4 you might expect to see on a desert safari. When we clamber out to get a closer look at the island’s three indigenous grape varietals —arinto dos Açores, verdelho, and terrantez do Pico —we have to crouch below the currais to hear his explanations over the wind. The vines truly would be decimated without them.

pico island wine tour

It may all seem like a lot of trouble, but when you attend a tasting at AWC’s recently opened winery, a gorgeous modern facility that produces around 90,000 bottles a year and also has a restaurant and six apartment-style accommodations for overnight stays, it becomes clear why these Portuguese oenophiles are expending so much energy. The richness of the volcanic terrain and the salty air that blows in from the Atlantic Ocean ( maresia , in Portuguese) is apparent in every sip. As the team at AWC continues to experiment, one thing seems certain: We can expect many more award-winning wines to come out of Portugal’s wild Atlantic archipelago.

pico island wine tour

“Texture, acidity, and saltiness come together in Azorean wines in a way you can’t replicate,” Rocha says. “Now we want to communicate that to the world.”

Three More Pico Wineries to Visit

A cerca dos frades.

In 2015, Tito Silva began restoring 200 acres of Pico vineyards. His father and grandfather used to grow wine for family and friends, but he is the first in his family to attempt a project of this scale. Among the standouts visitors can try is his A Cerca Dos Frades Terrantez do Pico Branco 2019.

Czar Winery

Fortunato Garcia’s wines—which come in extremely small releases and sell for upward of $500—can reach an ABV of 19 percent or more without being fortified, thanks to Pico’s volcanic soil and unique climate and the vintner’s removal of the leaves from the vines days before harvest. Tastings by appointment only.

The Pico Island Wine Cooperative

Founded in 1949, the island’s wine cooperative brings together the grapes of 250 different growers to produce some of the best Pico wines every year. (Don’t miss the 2019 verdelho or the 2020 arinto dos Açores. ) The cooperative offers tastings, guided tours of the winery, and culinary experiences.

7. Explore the Largest Lava Tube in Portugal

The Gruta das Torres Visitors Centre stands as a model for the sustainable utilization of a natural resource for both recreational enjoyment and environmental education, ensuring that its tours are conducted without disrupting the cave's natural state.

Gruta das Torres, the largest lava tube in Portugal, stretches over 5,150 meters and is a significant feature of the Lajidos – Gruta das Torres area within the Mountain Volcanic Complex. This remarkable formation is believed to have been created around 1500 years ago following an eruption from Cabeço Bravo.

8. Discover the Natural Lagoons of The Island

There are several lagoons on Pico Island that you can visit, but this was undoubtedly the one that swept me off my feet. On a sunny day, which allowed me to see the Pico mountain uncovered (something very rare), I discovered in Lagoa do Capitão (Captain’s Lagoon) the representation of what resembled paradise for me.

At an altitude of 800mt, you’ll find  Lagoa do Caiado , perfect for birdwatching lovers; next, you’ll find  Lagoa do Peixinho , one of the island’s largest lagoons and close by there’s also  Lagoa do Rosado , located in a volcanic crater and surrounded by lush green scenery. So, as you see: plenty of lagoons to admire.

10. Admire the World Heritage vineyards at Criação Velha

The Criação Velha Vineyards, nestled on Pico Island, stand as a remarkable example of the harmonious relationship between nature and human ingenuity, meriting their UNESCO World Heritage Site designation in 2004. This area is not just a testament to the Azores' stunning natural beauty but also a living museum of viticulture, where vines are meticulously nurtured in a unique patchwork of small, fertile plots. These plots are bordered by traditional volcanic stone walls, a clever and ancient method that protects precious grapes from the harsh Atlantic winds, ensuring their growth and the production of distinctive wines.

13. Explore Madalena

Madalena, situated on the western coastline of Pico Island, serves as a picturesque municipality framed by the majestic stratovolcano of Pico to its east and the Faial Channel on its west, which separates Pico from the island of Faial, a mere seven kilometers away. Comprising six civil parishes (freguesias), Madalena is almost surrounded by the vast Atlantic Ocean, providing stunning oceanic views and a serene maritime atmosphere.

The municipality is nestled between the island's two other municipalities, Lajes do Pico to the southeast and São Roque do Pico to the northeast, creating a unique geographical setting that boasts a rich blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and vibrant community life. Madalena's strategic position makes it an important hub for exploring Pico's diverse landscapes, from its volcanic peaks to its lush vineyards and the enchanting coastline.

Visit This Remote Portuguese Island To Sample One-Of-A-Kind Volcanic Wine

P ico, one of the middle islands in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores , is a land of contrasts and surprises. The locals call it "the black island" for its preponderance of black rock, which contrasts sharply with the villages' bright white buildings, orange tile roofs, and vermilion gates and doors. Pico Mountain — Portugal's tallest mountain at 7,713 feet — just out of the island's center, draped in deep green forests and watching over the towns like a proud mãe , or Portuguese mother. However, Pico Mountain — besides being tall — is not your average high hill. That's because it's actually a quiescent  volcano , one of many in the Azores islands.

The volcanic origins of the Azores islands, including Pico, are responsible for their dramatic geology and rich soil. Early Azorean settlers exploited the fertility of the land and the temperate climate to create a thriving agricultural industry that for centuries has produced cereals, tropical fruits, tea, and volcanic wine. Volcanic wine thankfully does not explode on the table — its cultivation techniques, mineral, and salty undertones are what make it unique across the world. Volcanic wine is produced throughout the islands, but Pico is currently its epicenter.

Pico's Volcanic Vineyards

Wine growing on Pico dates back to the 15th century, enabled by "the Pico miracle that transformed vast extensions of rock into fertile fields of vineyard," as described by the Bullar brothers in 1839. This is how the "miracle" works — volcanic rock walls are constructed in a criss-cross pattern to form small vineyard plots that protect vines from the salty wind blowing in from the ocean. The dark rocks in the walls and additional rocks inside the plots also absorb sunlight during the day and emit this energy as heat overnight. This creates a stable microclimate that supports grape ripening.

The resulting vineyards have an otherworldly appearance, like black honeycombs stretching across the landscape between the massive Pico Mountain and the ocean. These vineyards have changed little over the centuries, a testament to early settlers' ingenuity and diligence. Pico's vineyards were declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004 in light of their immense cultural value. Visit wine museums such as the Museo do Vinho or the Centro de Interpretação da Paisagem da Cultura da Vinha da Ilha do Pico to learn more about Pico's wine heritage.

Wine Experiences On Pico

To fully comprehend Pico's volcanic wine, you need to see the vineyards for yourself. The best way to do that is to drive or walk south along the coast from Madalena, the island's main town. After a few miles, you'll arrive at the Paisagem da Vinha de Criação Velha , where you can take it all in. Another area with well-preserved vineyards is northeast of Madalena near the Paisagem da Cultura da Vinha da Ilha do Pico.

After seeing how Pico's volcanic wine is grown, the next step is to taste it! The island produces many different volcanic wines: whites, reds, roses, and others. One highly regarded white is Frei Gigante, named after the Franciscan friar who introduced wine to Pico in 1450. This is a delicate, fragrant white that pairs perfectly with grilled fish and tart Azorean cheeses . You can sample Pico wines at any of the island's bars or restaurants, some of which have wine flights with prime examples from each category. In addition to having wine flights, the Cella Bar  has a stunning terrace overlooking the ocean on which to sip them — an added bonus. If you prefer to have a local to guide you during your aqueous exploration, wine tours are also available on Pico.

How to Plan the Perfect Trip to The Azores

The Azores is known as the 'Hawaii of Europe' — with whale watching and dramatic volcanic scenery.

Lindsay Cohn is a writer, editor, and avid traveler who has visited 45 countries across six continents — and counting. She contributes to Travel + Leisure, Hotels Above Par, InsideHook, Well+Good, The Zoe Report, and more.

The Azores, an autonomous Portuguese archipelago that’s in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, is known for its breathtaking volcanic landscapes that feel almost prehistoric at times. Most first-time visitors head straight toSão Miguel, the largest and most-visited island and the site of the main international airport. And can you blame them? The “Hawaii of Europe” as it’s called brims with crater lakes, lush hillsides, fumaroles, and waterfalls. The terrain across the archipelago is both dramatic and remarkably varied. Other lesser-known locales such as São Jorge and Pico offer plenty for travelers to see, do, and admire, too. Santa Maria, the southernmost island in the chain, for example, boasts the only white-sand beaches in the region. Of course, in a place that’s steeped in such untamed natural beauty, eco-adventures — from hiking to kayaking — abound.

Yearning to trek through surreal scenery, go whale watching, sample local cheese, and post up at a relaxing hotel? Scroll on for expert tips to help you plan the most epic Azores trip.

Best Hotels and Resorts in the Azores

Octant furnas, são miguel.

“Set amidst lush greenery and volcanic scenery, Octant Furnas allows guests to fully immerse themselves in the natural beauty and cultural richness of the Azores,” says Pilar Melo Antunes, the business development director at AtlantiVacations , a tour company that specializes in tailor-made Azores experiences. The hotel is built for unwinding, with indoor and outdoor geothermal pools and a healing water circuit at the heavenly spa as highlights. "The geothermal pools are simply heavenly," said Susmita Baral , an editor at T+L. "Plus the on-site spa makes this hotel a great wellness destination on the island."

Santa Barbara Eco Resort, São Miguel

Set along the remote and rugged northern coast of São Miguel, Santa Barbara Eco Resort gives off a cool, surfer retreat energy with modern architecture, views of the azure waves, and an emphasis on wellness. Gardens overflow with endemic flora. The organic farm supports the robust culinary program. There’s also a huge saltwater pool accented by stone lounges and a hut for alfresco massages.

Sensi, São Miguel

“Earning a true five-star rating, Sensi is a standout option for Azorean luxury at its finest,” remarks Horácio Alves, a Lisbon-based guide with Black Tomato who regularly does tours in the Azores. “It’s a really special place with superb food, a spa dedicated to mind-body-spirit relaxation, top-notch service, and design that feels elegant yet authentic to the volcanic island of São Miguel.”

White Exclusive Suites & Villas, São Miguel

Planning a honeymoon or romantic getaway ? White Exclusive Suites & Villas is a luxurious, boutique respite perched on the southern coast of São Miguel. Designed with grown-up guests in mind, it’s elegant and intimate with just 11 contemporary suites and villas, gastronomic cuisine, and a sanctuary-like spa for signature rituals, hydrotherapy, and yoga.

Pocinho Bay, Pico

While São Miguel may have the lion's share of hotels, in-the-know travelers decamp to Pocinho Bay , a hidden gem on the island of Pico with vineyards, sweeping views of Mount Pico and Faial Island, and access to a natural rock pool. “The property feels beachy, almost reminiscent of Mykonos with laid-back yet attentive service, woven hammocks, and exposed stone walls in the rooms, plus a range of excellent small-production wines,” says Alves.

Best Things to Do in the Azores

Sete cidades, são miguel.

If you’ve ever Googled the Azores, chances are pretty good that images of Sete Cidades popped up. The journey to this emblematic nature area on the island of São Miguel is absolutely stunning with unimaginable sightlines of the famous twin crater lakes, Lagoa Azul ("blue lagoon") and Lagoa Verde ("green lagoon"), and the huge, 3-mile-wide caldera. Along the way, there are many scenic viewpoints and charming small villages.

Ilhéu de Vila Franca

The uninhabited flooded crater islet of Ilhéu de Vila Franca is easily reachable right off the south-central coast of São Miguel. The protected lagoon teems with unique marine life and offers exceptional visibility, making it ideal for snorkeling. It’s also popular for swimming and cliff diving.

Hot Springs in Furnas, São Miguel

A hub of geothermal activity on São Miguel, Furnas is blessed with many hot springs. Wellness and relaxation seekers will find plenty of spots to soak. Alves suggests Centro de Interpretação Ambiental da Caldeira Velha , a nature preserve with mineral pools, waterfalls, and lush foliage. “It's important to note that the water has a high sulfur content. The unique smell can take some time to get used to, but the healing benefits are plenty.”

Pico da Barrosa, Pico

Fans of high-altitude activities won’t want to miss Pico da Barrosa, the highest point in Portugal. The summit sits atop a dormant volcano at an elevation of 7,713 feet above sea level. The round-trip hike is quite pleasant as long as you have sure footing and a knowledgeable local guide to help navigate the volcanic rock terrain.

Whale Watching

The Azores is one of the best destinations for whale watching in the world. Many different types of cetaceans call the waters surrounding the archipelago home and guided tours give visitors a front-row seat to these majestic marine creatures. While peak season stretches from April through October, to up your odds of seeing larger migratory species such as blue whales, consider planning a trip between the end of April and the beginning of May.

Best Restaurants in the Azores

Quinta dos sabores, são miguel.

Quinta dos Sabores is a working organic farm in northern São Miguel that includes farmhouse accommodations, a shop, and an intimate restaurant. “The five-course tasting menu changes daily depending on the availability of ingredients and also includes an appetizer, starter, soup, two mains, and a dessert,” explains Atunes. It’s a true field-to-fork gourmet experience.

Bar Caloura, São Miguel

It doesn’t get better than fresh seafood — specifically buttery grilled limpets with a generous squeeze of lemon and sizzling garlic prawns — washed down with a pitcher of housemade sangria and a side of sweeping ocean views. That’s the setup at Bar Caloura , a long-standing favorite of locals (Alves included) and visitors to the small town of Água de Pau.

Tasquinha Vieira, São Miguel

One of Alves’s favorite cozy restaurants on the island of São Miguel, Tasquinha Vieira may be small in stature, but it boasts big flavors with a focus on using fresh, local ingredients. “The atmosphere is casual and unassuming, so it’s really perfect for sharing some plates and sipping on a cold beer.” Pro tip: Limited seating means it’s encouraged to make reservations in advance.

Restaurante Associação Agrícola de São Miguel, São Miguel

Carnivores rejoice! Meat takes center stage at Restaurante Associação Agrícola de São Miguel , a hidden gem with a farm collective vibe that Alves deems “outstanding.” The signature Bife à Associação (fried steak) is a must-order dish.

O Ancoradouro, Pico

O Ancoradouro has earned a reputation as something of a landmark on the island of Pico. That’s because it’s impossible to grow tired of fresh-caught fish, seafood stew, and limpets at a waterfront restaurant that’s always friendly and welcoming.

Best Wineries in the Azores

Azores wine company, pico.

If you only have the chance to visit one winery, consider the Azores Wine Company. Many credit the enterprising project with putting vinho from the Azores on the map in such a significant way. Besides tasting complex volcanic wines and touring modern facilities, visitors can savor acclaimed gastronomy and even spend the night in architecturally striking apartments (with advanced booking, of course).

Pico Wines, Pico

The largest and oldest wine operation in the Azores, Pico Wines is a cooperative of producers aimed at keeping noble grape varieties and ancestral winemaking traditions alive. “It’s definitely worth a visit to this UNESCO-protected site to do private vineyard tours, soak in the breathtaking beauty of the landscape, and sample some of the best pours in the region,” says Alves.

Quinta Da Jardinete, São Miguel

Pico has established itself as the wine island, but that certainly doesn’t mean you’ll have any trouble finding quality pours on São Miguel. Quinta Da Jardinete is a small, family-owned estate that produces terroir-driven vinho made from grapes such as merlot, aragonês, and lemberger (blaufränkisch) that are grown right on site.

How to Get There

Ponta Delgada - João Paulo II Airport (PDL) is located on São Miguel. Travelers coming from the East Coast of the United States will be pleased to learn that Sata Azores Airlines operates direct flights from New York (JFK) and Boston (BOS) to Ponta Delgada, and United offers direct flights from Newark (EWR). From there, connecting flights are available to the other islands. There are also ferries that connect some of the Azores islands.
