15 Best Things to do in Skåne, Sweden + Interactive Map

Things to do in Skåne

Home > Sweden

Skåne County is located in the south part of Sweden and is an area filled with beautiful nature, landmarks, sandy beaches, and picturesque cozy towns. There are plenty of things to do in Skåne and in this article I’ve selected the top 15 things to do in Skåne. In this list of the best things to do in Skåne, I’ve gathered the best beaches, parks, castles, mills, and tourist areas. I’ve also added a map of things to do in Skåne and Malmö in general. I’ve included a handy interactive Google map in this post as well. On the map, you’ll see all my favorite places and things to do in Skåne, but in this post, I’ve only selected my top things to do in Skåne.

The 15 Best Things to do in Skåne

When planning your trip to Skåne, you can either fly to Copenhagen or Malmö airport – the first is definitely a lot bigger than Malmö, which only caters to a handful of flights per day. The Skåne county used to be a part of Denmark and you’ll notice how fast and easy it is to travel between the two countries over the Oresund Bridge.

No worries! Save on Pinterest to read it later.

Skåne might not be huge, but the points of interest are quite scattered around and not so easily accessible by public transport. I’d recommend renting a car/motorbike for your trip to Skåne, or a bicycle if you’re feeling up to the task!

1. Skanör beach

Just 30 min south-west of Malmö, you’ll see some of the most beautiful beaches Sweden has to offer. Skanör beach is my favorite place to spend the day swimming and relaxing at, and the colorful beach huts make it the perfect destination for photography enthusiasts as well. In the map, I marked the exact location of the parking, which is closest to the beautiful beach huts.

2. Malmö City

Malmö is the third-largest city in Sweden, after Stockholm and Gothenburg, and the capital city of Skåne County. Malmö is a cozy city with a creative culture, beautiful architecture, and a relaxed Scandinavian vibe. There are plenty of things to do in Malmö, so try and spend a couple of nights here to get a good taste of the city.

3. Ven Island

Hands down the best day trip in Skåne award goes to Ven Island . Located a 30-minute ferry ride from Landskrona city, which is 30 minutes north-west of Malmö, this island is bound to steal your heart!

Ven island has less than 400 inhabitants and an area of approximately 7.5 km². Ven is pretty much car-free and the best way to explore the island is by renting a bicycle. Yes – those yellow bicycles are a trademark for Ven, especially the tandem versions! I recommend taking the Ven map at the ferry terminal and cycling the red trail. More information about the island here .

4. Two Beautiful Mills

Flackarps mill.

Skåne is not short on mills, but if I had to choose a favorite it would be Flackarp’s Mill. The mill has been standing here since 1868 and is located just on the border to Lund county. The area is easily accessible and there is a parking place just in front of the mill. If you want to take a peek inside, they do have an open day a few times a year, but the best time is to visit the first Sunday of July, when ‘Möllornas Dag’ (Mill Day) takes place.

Flackarps Mölla

Aggarps Mill

The second favorite of mine is Aggarps Mill. This mill is located less than 30 minutes from Malmö center and has been standing there since 1896. Aggarps mill has 3 stories and is one of the landmarks of Svedala municipality. The mill is beautiful from both sides, so make sure you take a tour all-around when you’re there. Just like Flackarp, the best time to visit the mill is the first Sunday of July, when ‘Möllornas Dag’ (Mill Day) takes place.

5. Have a Swedish Fika in Malmö

Sweden has a big culture of fika – a coffee with something sweet. You’ll find great bakeries and pastry shops all over Skåne, but some of my favorite cafés are right here in Malmö. I loved Söderberg & Sara, but you’ll find plenty on my interactive map as well.

Fika Malmö

6. Österlenkryddor farm shop and lavender field

This farm shop located in beautiful Österlen is not only famous for its award-winning lavender ice cream, but also the lovely lavender field that blooms in the summer.

Depending on the weather and warm spring, you will most likely see the lavender field bloom in late June and in July. We were there in early July and due to a cold wave in spring, it hasn’t managed to blossom just as much yet. But the place is a great excuse for a fika, so enjoy it if you’re visiting this area of Skåne.

Fan of flower fields and not in Skåne in high summer? If you arrived in spring, then check out the beautiful rapeseed fields in April and May – the entire region turns yellow and looks absolutely gorgeous!

7. Torup Castle

Just like mills, castles are also found scattered all over the country and Skåne has quite an overwhelming amount of them. Torup Castle is located just 15 minutes out of Malmö, near Bokskogen or ‘the beech forest’ and makes for the perfect trip for a company of any size (especially popular for family trips). Torup Castle was completed in around 1540 and is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Sweden.

My favorite corner of the castle grounds was the little ‘Pannkaksköket’ Ameliden. This is the tiny little house which translates to ‘pancake kitchen Ameliden’, is where the castle girls could play house chores, as were the princesses at Solliden and Sofiero castles.

8. Häckeberga Castle

Beautifully located and very photogenic, this castle is only open to hotel and restaurant guests. If you only wanted to take some pictures here, then I’d say this is the perfect place to fly your drone! If you’re curious about what’s on the inside, then make sure to book a table and be prepared for the higher prices (2-course lunch costs 249kr/person). Besides the castle, the area also has some nice hiking trails.

Things to do in Skåne 39

9. Smygehuk: Sweden’s most southern point

55 degrees 20 minutes and 3 seconds is as far south as you can get in Sweden and this is where Smygehuk is located. Besides the monument for the most southern point, you should also take a stroll through this charming fishing village and take in the views from the Smygehuk Lighthouse.

10. Trollskogen – the dwarf beech forest

(There are a couple of Trollskogen’s in Sweden, so make sure you google for the one in Lund municipality.)

This forest is a part of the Prästaskogens Nature Reserve and is known primarily for the mystical-looking dwarf beech trees that grow here. These trees are beautiful all year round, but a lot of people say they’re most intriguing in winter when you can see all the branch shapes ‘undisturbed’ by leaves. If you have more time, feel free to bring a picnic bag here or have some fika. The parking location that’s closest to the dwarf beech forest is located on the map under ‘Trollskogen parking’ in the Parks and Nature layer.

11. Körsbärsdalen or Cherry Valley

While cherry valley might be best to visit when the cherry trees blossom in May, it’s a beautiful area for a hike regardless of the time of year. The bright-white blossoms open up and the entire valley lights up!

Tip: drive all the way down to the parking marked on the map as Cherry Valley parking to get closest to the valley.

12. Lund: Student City

Lund is one of the most charming cities in Sweden, heavily populated by students. You’ll see it full in all seasons, except summer – which I think is perfect for tourists! In Lund, don’t miss walking around the Botanical Gardens, Lund Cathedral and checking out the outside of the Lund University Library – it’s a stunner!

13. Flowery Ystad

Walking down one of the most flowery, lovely streets in Sweden, you can’t help but fall in love with this quaint town. The town is home to great museums and art galleries and even has 40 km of sandy beaches. This town must be on your list when you’re planning what things to do in Skåne!

14. Ales Stenar or Ales Stones

Ales Stenar is an oval outline stone ship. It is 67 m (220 ft) long formed by 59 large boulders, weighing up to almost 2 tonnes each. The stone ship is located at a beautiful hill by the ocean in Kåseberga. While the top of the hill can get quite windy, it’s the perfect place for a stroll and a look back into history, as some of these stones date back all the way to the Nordic Iron Age or 1400 years ago.

Ales Stenar 1

15. Vikingabyn Foteviken – Viking Village and Open-Air Museum

Viking Village and museum in Foteviken is a great place to spend a few hours with the family or on your own. It’s located about 20 minutes from Malmö and features an open-air museum, 23 different Viking-style buildings, a reconstructed Viking ship, live shows, galleries and real people portraying Viking-style lives and daily chores.

When to visit Skåne Sweden

When to visit Skåne, Sweden depends largely on what activities you plan to do. Summer, between May and August, is undoubtedly the best time to visit. The days are long and the temperatures often rise above 20°C.

If you plan on visiting in the winter, then make sure you pack a few layers, a raincoat and wellies. It rains often and the temperatures often go below 0°C.

I hope you enjoyed this Skåne guide and the best things to do in Skåne. For all my other Sweden content, make sure you visit this page  or my Instagram account for more stories from Sweden.

12x The Best Things to Do in Skåne, Sweden

By Author Roxanne Weijer (she/her)

Posted on Last updated: April 3, 2023

Are you looking for a holiday destination with beautiful nature, great outdoor activities, sea, and beaches, good food, and cute little towns? Don’t look any further!

Skåne County is the place to go to! It’s the southern region of Sweden, which used to belong to Denmark.

This region offers a lot, there’s much to see and do, and we will tell you all about the best things to do in Skåne.

This region of Sweden is a lot different than the rest of the country, don’t expect mountains, fjords, and large forests with pine trees.

Skåne is “Sweden’s Tuscany” with hills, some of the best Sweden beaches, farmlands, and even a vineyard!

About Skåne, Sweden

Skåne County is located in southern Sweden and has a population of 1.3 million people. A long time ago this part of Sweden used to be part of Denmark, and you can still find Danish influences in this region.

It’s also very close to Denmark: the 16 kilometers (10 miles) Øresund bridge connects Denmark and Sweden with each other.

The bridge is Europe’s longest road and rail bridge. Thanks to the bridge, it’s easy to reach Skåne from Copenhagen. It’s also possible to fly to Malmö.

We highly recommend exploring Skåne by car, or for the sporty ones: by bicycle! Skåne isn’t super big; it takes about 1.5 hours by car to drive from East to West.

Therefore it’s possible to see a lot of the region if you visit Skåne only for a short time.

Good to know: the currency used in Sweden is the Swedish Kron a, you can’t pay with Euros in Sweden. The language is Swedish but most Swedes speak English very well.

What to Do in Skåne

Cozy Malmö

Malmö is the capital city of Skåne County and the third-largest city in Sweden, after Stockholm and Gothenburg. Though, to us, it felt more like a big village.

Malmö will probably be the starting point of your trip, and the city is one of the best things to do in Skåne.

Øresund bridge from Västra hamnen, Malmö

Things to do in Malmö :

  • Gamla Staden : This is the old part of Malmö. Gamla Staden is very cute with its cobblestone streets and colorful tiny houses. Must-sees are the squares Stortorget and Lilla Torg. Wander around the historic part of Gamla Väster, and don’t forget to stop for Fika. Fika is a very important Swedish concept to learn. A translation of Fika is a coffee break with a cookie or pastry. But it’s much more than that. Swedish people say it’s a concept, a state of mind, and so important in Swedish culture. During Fika, you must slow down and enjoy time with your friends, family, and/or colleagues. We highly recommend heading to cafe Eida (by Nina) for Fika!
  • See the city from the water : there’s a lot of water in and around Malmö. Therefore seeing the city from the water is a great idea. Some tours show you around, but we highly recommend doing it yourself! With Bookaboat , you can easily rent a boat and drive around the waters of Malmö. You don’t need a license to do that, and it’s very easy. Do not miss the cute lighthouse during your trip!
  • Be amazed by the Turning Torso : the Turning Torso is a very unique building in Malmö. With 190 meters (623 ft), it’s the tallest building in Scandinavia. The shape of the building is the shape of a twisted human body.
  • Visit Västra Hamnen : this western harbor district is a new district in Malmö. It offers great views of the Turning Torso and is the perfect spot to view the Øresund Bridge.
  • Looking for a place to relax? Head to Kungspark . It’s a beautiful park with a cool old windmill. Right next to the park, you can find Malmö’s castle and the Malmö museum.
  • If you are visiting Malmö mid-August, go to the Malmö Festival . It’s the biggest event happening in Malmö every year. During the festival, there are outdoor concerts, a theater, street food stents, and many more fun things to do in the city.
  • And if you are visiting Malmö in July, don’t miss out on Malmö Pride ! Malmö turns into a bit rainbow during that time of the year. The parade walk attracts many people from Sweden (and, like us: people from other places in the world), and we absolutely loved it.

Hjorttackegatan, Gamla Väster, Gamla Staden, Malmö, Sweden

Are you planning on visiting Stockholm as well? Make sure to check out our Stockholm guide .

Colorful Skanör Beach

This beach in the South West of Skåne is a popular beach because of the picturesque beach huts, white sand, and shallow ocean.

The beach houses in Skanör are colored in all colors of the rainbow; they are the cutest! Besides seeing the adorable beach houses, this is a great beach to go to for some relaxing and swimming.

places to visit in skane sweden

Student city Lund

Lund is a cute old city close to Malmö. This city is considered the number one city in Sweden for students.

Therefore you will find many students here (though not during Summer). The main building of Lund University is absolutely stunning. The city also has beautiful parks and gorgeous botanical gardens.

Sweden’s most southern point: Smygehuk

Smygehuk is a fishing village in southern Skåne. It’s also the most southern point of Sweden! This is as far South as you can get in Sweden.

Therefore many tourists like to visit this village. Go on top of Smygehuk’s lighthouse for a great view of the ocean!

Flowery Ystad

This is our favorite town in Skåne. All around Ystad, there are cute houses, cozy cafes, and cobblestone streets.

When we visit Ystad in July, the entire town is filled with beautiful flowers (lots of hollyhocks!), which makes Ystad extra pretty.

If you like to shop, there’s a shopping street with small unique shops: Stora Östergatan.

Ystad is a famous town in Sweden because many films and series are made here. Scandinavia’s largest film studio, Ystad Studios, is located here.

The stories of the famous novel Inspector Wallander , written by Henning Markel, take place in Ystad. There are tours and walking routes you can do dedicated to the novels.

Ystad, Skåne, Sweden

Lavender ice cream at Österlenkryddor farm shop

In June and July, there’s a beautiful lavender field that blooms next to this farm shop. A lavender field in Sweden?

We never expected to find that in Sweden! Besides lavender, this farm shop grows and sells spices, award-winning homemade (lavender) ice cream, herbal salts, plants, and much more.

Do you like flowers? Skåne turns yellow mid to late May when the rapeseed blooms!

Ales Stenar Monument

Ales Stenar is the Swedish Stonehedge. Close to Ystad, in the town of Kåseberge, you can find these mysterious stones.

It’s a stone-age monument with 59 stones formed as a ship. Nobody really knows why it’s there; some believe it’s a burial monument, while others think it’s an astronomical clock.

Visit the monument and decide what you believe!

Everything apple in Apple Kingdom Kivik

Do you like apples? Then you can’t miss the region of Österlen. Österlen is known as the apple kingdom of Sweden. The capital of Österlen is Kivik.

Kivik is all about apples, and not just apples; here, you can buy everything made of apples. The area of Kivik is perfect for apple trees, thanks to its fertile grounds and mild climate.

The area grows over 70 different kinds of apples! Visit during spring to see all the trees blossoming!

Hike through Stenshuvud National Park

Close to Kivik, there’s the National Park Stenshuvud. The Stenshuvud hill in the park is a popular hike that offers great views, especially since the rest of the landscape is pretty flat.

The hill has three peaks; the highest is 97 meters above sea level (318ft). In the park, you can also find sandy beaches, a rocky coast, multiple hiking trails, and a cute little lighthouse.

Visit Helsingborg

Helsingborg is a great city to visit for many reasons. It’s Skåne’s second-largest city after Malmö, so it’s different from small towns like Ystad, Lund, and Kivik.

The city center of Helsingborg is pretty and has a lot to offer. Something we love about the city is all the street art! It even has a street-art festival every year.

From Helsingborg, you can easily cross to Denmark by ferry; it only takes 20 minutes.

Visiting Helsingborg is definitely among the best things to do in Skåne.

What are the best things to do in Helsingborg?

  • Pälsjobaden sauna : this isn’t just a relaxing place to visit; it’s also very picturesque! The houses on the water are the cutest. Pälsjobaden sauna has two different saunas on each side. One side is for men, the other for women. This is a typical Swedish nude sauna. During your sauna visit, it’s possible to jump into the refreshing water of the sea. There’s a terrace with sunbeds to relax. If you are hungry, definitely pay a visit to the sauna’s restaurant. We highly recommend eating mussels here!
  • Sofiero Palace and Gardens : the Sofiero Palace was once the royal family’s residence. The gardens of the palace are stunning to see. Here, you can find a wide range of plants and Europe’s largest collection of rhododendrons. Rhododendrons bloom during the beginning of Summer. Bonus: sometimes, there are outdoor concerts held in the gardens.
  • Climb on top of the Känan Tower : this 35 meters high (114ft) high tower used to be part of a larger Danish Fortress. The tower is the only thing that’s still there. Climb 146 steps up, and you will have amazing views over Helsingborg and all the way to Denmark! The terrace and stairs in front of the tower are beautiful to see as well.
  • Helsingborg’s street art : as we mentioned before, Helsingborg is filled with awesome street art. Head to the website of the street-art project of Helsingborg to get inspired. Their website is in Swedish, but you can find some addresses on it (or use Google Translate!).

Helsingborg Street Art, In the land of grey and pink, Telmo Miel, Skåne, Sweden

Nature and wildlife at Kullaberg National Park

This national park is beautiful and a must-visit! It’s located North of Helsingborg. The national park has a rocky coastline and stunning cliffs.

There are many outdoor activities you can do here, such as climbing, abseiling, mountain biking, and hiking. You can also do tours to explore caves and wildlife.

We went on a whale safari to spot dolphin-looking whales, and yes, it was amazing! It’s also really cool to see the cliffs from the water.

Kullaberg Natural Park, Skåne, Sweden

Ransvik beach

A must-go-to spot for food and/or drinks is Ransvik Havsveranda , a gay-owned restaurant. Not only is the location great, but the food (including the cakes) is also so delicious.

The terrace overlooks the sea and is surrounded by nature. Ransvik beach was Europe’s first mixed beach (men & women), which was a big deal! It was the “Ibiza of the 1900s”.

Nowadays, it’s still a popular beach to swim at.

Ransvik Beach, Kullaberg, Skåne, Sweden

Fishing Village Mölle

Mölle is a cute fishing village close to Kullaberg. The harbor of Mölle is cozy and perfect for pictures. In 1890, Mölle got one of Sweden’s first seaside resorts, and still, many people go to this area to bathe.

Wellness Skåne

Skåne has a few wellness spots to go to. As mentioned before, close to Helsingborg, there’s the Pälsjobaden sauna complex. There are a few more spots you can check out:

  • Saltsjöbad : this is a luxurious spa in Ystad and an award-winning spa complex. And it’s not only a spa but also a hotel!
  • Hotel Mossbylund : Hotel Mossbylund is a spa hotel with a sauna, an indoor and outdoor pool, and various wellness treatments. The spa hotel is located close to the beach.
  • Ribersborgs Kallbadhus : this bathing house is located at Malmö’s beachside and is popular amongst both tourists and locals. It’s also possible to jump in the sea here!

Pålsjöbaden, Helsingborg sauna, Skåne, Sweden

Want to see more of Europe? Head to the magical city of Budapest . Spoiler: in Budapest, they have the best thermal baths!

Glamping Skåne

Aerial view of Arilds Vingård, glamping, vineyard, Skåne, Sweden

Glamping in Skåne is a unique experience. Close to Mölle, there’s Arilds Vingård. A vineyard in Sweden? Yes! Like the lavender field, this wasn’t something we expected to find in Sweden.

Arilds Vinegård is very cozy, and the new glamping area is lovely. They also have cabins you can stay in, and they have a restaurant.

They serve delicious food and, of course, homemade wines. All made from their own vineyard.

Camping Skåne

Skåne County is a perfect region to go camping! There are many campsites to go to. From spots on the beach, next to a lake, or in the forest, Skåne has it all. Let us tell you about some great campsites in Skåne:

  • Mötesplats Borstahusen : Mötesplats Borstahusen is located between Helsingborg and Malmö, in the small fishing village Borstahusen. This cozy campsite is located next to the beach. Camping here or renting a house/cute cottage is possible. There’s a restaurant and spa on the campsite, and there’s much to do in the area. It’s possible to go hiking, fishing, visiting the island of Ven, golfing, etc.
  • Ystad Camping : Ystad Camping is located in Ystad. The beach is only 200 meters away, and the camping is located in the middle of the nature reserve Sandskogen, a great area if you like to hike. It’s possible to camp here or to rent a small cabin. In the area, there’s a lot to do! Of course, you can visit Ystad, but there are also many hiking and biking trails in the area, pools, mini-golf opportunities, fishing spots, etc.
  • First Camp Mölle : First Camp has campsites all over Sweden. First Camp Mölle is a great campsite to go to, as you are close to Mölle and its beautiful scenery. When you go to Skåne, you can’t miss the National Park Kullaberg. The National Park is nearby the campsite and is great to go to on a day trip. Children will love First Camp Mölle as it has a swimming pool and a water park! First Camp Mölle also offers cabin rental.
  • Ringsjöstrand Camping : Ringsjöstrand Camping is located in the heart of Skåne, next to lake Ringsjön. It’s the second biggest lake in Skåne. Enjoy swimming in the lake, kayaking, fishing on the lake, and biking or hiking the area! The camping also offers cottage rental.

Malmö Castle - Things to do in Skåne

Malmö Castle, also known as Malmöhus Castle, is a castle located in the city of Malmö, in the southern Swedish province of Skåne. It is one of the best things to do in Skåne for several reasons.

The castle has a long and rich history dating back to the 15th century. It has served as a royal castle, a prison, and a museum, and has undergone several renovations and refurbishments over the years. This makes it an interesting and educational place to visit for history buffs.

Sweden and many of the countries of Northern Europe are often forgotten and overlooked, but they offer a unique experience and a diverse landscape that is the perfect place to explore during the summer and winter! Skåne is a gorgeous region of Sweden, full of places to explore and activities to enjoy. From historic fortresses to flowering farm shops, Skåne’s countryside offers visitors a variety of ways to take in its unique beauty. Whether you’re looking for an educational experience or simply some great photo ops, there is something for everyone here in the southernmost region of Sweden.

This post may contain some affiliate links. This means I make a small profit from your purchase but at no increased cost to you. I only recommend products that I love and would purchase myself! Full disclaimer here .

1. Go Castle Hopping

There are so many beautiful castles scattered all over Skåne. I recommend picking a castle that is close to other sights you really want to see in order to cut down on drive time. Things in Skåne can be fairly spread out and if you only have a few days to see everything you can it will be really helpful to shorten drive times. Here are my favorite castles we’ve visited so far and a list of all the ones I hope to visit.

Torups Slott

torups castle in Skane, sweden

This castle is pure perfection. We visited on a warm sunny evening when the long summer hours allowed us to have sunlight even at 7 pm. We walked the short walking trail around the lake through a small wooded area with stunning views of the castle in the distance. A small field was filled with sheep and horses calmly grazing. As we walked my husband and toddler played together and laughed. I held my infant baby boy in my arms and took it all in, conversing with my in-laws.

I’m not kidding when I say I could have lived in that moment forever.

There is a small museum inside the castle as well as castle garden trails that are open to the public. The outside is free to visit, it is a great spot for a picnic lunch or dinner.

Svaneholm Castle

Svaneholm Castle

This castle is also beautiful although it has a less traditional “castle look” in my opinion. It has a beautiful lake right next to it with walking trails around the lake to enjoy. On the front lawn, there is a swing set for kids, my son really appreciated that!

Inside the castle is a museum and a small cafe!

Right near the entrance of the castle, there is also a small garden that is upkept by the local garden club:    .

More Castles in Skåne:

  • Sofiero Palace
  • Norrviken Gardens
  • Glimmingehus
  • Hackeberga Slott (This is a hotel only open to hotel and restaurant guests)
  • Krapperups Castle
  • Vittskovle Slott
  • Trolleholms Slott
  • Trollenas Castle
  • Bosjokloster Slott
  • Hjularod Slott
  • Kronovalls Vinslott (Another hotel in a castle)

2. Sightsee in Malmö

Malmö

Malmö is Sweden’s third largest city and it is in Skåne right across from Denmark. Because of its proximity to Copenhagen a lot of people take a day trip to Malmö while they are in the area. There are a lot of fun and unique things to do in Malmö. So many that I have a round-up of all the top things to do in Malmö.

From Malmöhus castle to a disgusting food museum, make sure you carve out some time to visit this unique city. And of course, crossing the Øresund Bridge itself is a unique thing to do while you’re visiting the area.

3. Have Fika

Fika treats

No matter where you are in Sweden, don’t forget to stop by a small cafe or pack a small treat to go for Fika each afternoon. Fika is an afternoon break taken with friends and family every afternoon over a cup of coffee and a sweet treat.

A few of the best places to grab fika in Skåne are: Söderberg & Sara (Malmö), St Jakobs (Malmö), Flinkmans Cafe (Helsingborg), Åbergs Trädgärd (Ystad), Österlenkryddor (Ystad)

4. Stop by a Few Farm Shops in Skåne

The lavender field at Osterlenkryddor.

Several local farms run small shops where locals and tourists can buy local produce and goods directly from the farms themselves. These shops have the most beautiful gardens and delicious foods.

My favorite thus far is Österlenkryddor . This ADORABLE shop has multiple goods to draw you in. First up is the absolutely amazing homemade ice cream in the best flavors. Lavender is their most popular but I don’t love floral flavors so we tried the pistachio, raspberry, saffron, and hazelnut flavors. It was so creamy and delicious.

Secondly, they have a lavender field! This is how I initially found them because I love flower fields. Guests are welcome to take photos in the field and on select mornings during the summer they offer sunrise events in the flower field where you can sample some of their products. And lastly, they have a whole shop filled with spices and foods and more that you can shop.

Other Farm Shops:

  • Angavallen – A farm-to-table restaurant and farm store.
  • Hallongarden – This farm offers pick your own raspberries, strawberries and blueberries May-June. I hear the raspberry cheesecake is to die for.

5. Vikingabyn Foteviken – Viking Village and Museum

Vikingabyn foteviken, a viking town in Skåne Sweden.

A bit more of a touristy stop is Vikingabyn Foteviken. This museum offers a replica Viking village complete with a tour from a local Viking as well as villagers that work in some of the shops just as the Vikings would have. We got to try homemade bread, butter and honey as well as make a bracelet in the weaver’s hut and observe a blacksmith at work.

This is a fun place to visit with kids because it is interactive and there is a lot of space for them to run and play. There are even some games from the Viking times that everyone can try their hand at.

6. Visit Lund

Lund, Sweden during Christmas time.

Lund is a university city not that far from Malmō itself. Because a large amount of the population are university students the city is extra empty during the summer, perfect for the summer tourists!

You’ll have a great time when you walk among the flowers at the Lund Botanical Garden, visit the Lund Cathedral or go back in time at Kulturen with houses dating back to the middle ages. There are many yummy food spots worth trying as well so no one will go hungry. And of course, just walk the streets to find the cute and cozy corners all throughout town.

7. ales stenar.

Ales Stenar, an ancient remnant left in Skåne Sweden from viking times.

Take a small hike up to the cliffside to see these old stones from Viking times. Ale Stenar is about a 20-minute walk from the parking area up to the stones with a mild gain in elevation. At the top, you can enjoy the great view over the ocean as you take in the history of these 1,000+ year-old stones. This stone ship is a beautiful remnant of a bygone time. It is very windy at the top of the cliff and when conditions are right you’ll see lots of wind surfers flying about.

There is not much else to do in the surrounding area although the small town at the base of the cliffs does have some yummy looking restaurants.

One of many picturesque streets in Ystad, Sweden

Small towns are a specialty when it comes to Scandinavia. I am constantly amazed by the sights and things to do in so many of the little towns all over the country. Ystad is no exception. One of Sweden’s top charming towns, they have a main street lined with small shops and restaurants that is fun to walk along. The church on the city square is open to the public and is beautiful inside.

During the summer there are flowers blooming everywhere but regardless of when you visit Ystad is home to the most picturesque street ever. This curved residential street is as Instagram-worthy as it gets.

9. The Mills of Skåne

a woman walking towards a mill in Malmo, Sweden. The largest city in skane, sweden.

Large white modern windmills are a common sight in Skåne but you can also find older mills too. The older mills make for much cuter photo ops and picnic spots than the newer models. There is a very pretty mill right in downtown Malmō behind Malmō Castle. Others like Bracke Molla and Flackarps Mill are out in the countryside.

I love hiking and the subtle rolling hills of Skåne are a wonderful spot to do some light hiking. It won’t give you views like the mountains but you can get outside and appreciate nature. The Trollskogen hike takes you through a beech tree forest and sounds like it would be truly wonderful. Nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the beautiful nature that can be found in the Kullaberg Nature Reserve or one of the National Parks.

11. Skanor Beach

places to visit in skane sweden

We live in Florida and I do just have to say, the Swedish beaches aren’t quite as nice (read: warm) as the turquoise beaches of Tampa. However, there are still some beautiful white sandy beaches worth visiting in the southern region of Sweden. The small beach huts of Skanor beach are cute and worth seeing. They are absolutely adorable and practical too. People purchase these huts to store all of their beach supplies so when they take a beach trip they have everything they need in one accessible spot.

Even though the weather is colder in Sweden than in Tampa, on a warm summer day this is a wonderful beach to visit for a beach day in Skåne, Sweden.

Other beautiful beaches in Skåne: Sandhammaren, Simrishamn, Haväng.

Best Time to Visit Skåne, Sweden

As a whole the summer months are the best time of the year to visit Sweden. The weather is warm but almost never hot and on a sunny day it is perfectly comfortable to spend the day outside. Skåne can be quite rainy almost anytime of year so definitely be prepared. Bring an umbrella and a rain jacket everywhere you go in order to stay dry.

How to Get Around Skåne

Public transportation in Sweden is top notch so using trains and buses to get around is a great way to keep your cost down and still see everything. There is a train station in every city and bus stops at almost all of the sights you would want to see, even the more remote places.

Wildflowers and white buildings in a small town in Skåne Sweden.

If you are short on time in the area or prefer to keep to your own time table while sightseeing then a car rental is a great option. Things are pretty spread out in Skåne so when there is a lot to do it can save a lot of time when you don’t have to wait for buses and trains.

malmo Santiago Calatrava turning torso skyscraper residential city

Turning Torso

Malmö, Skåne’s largest city, is home to the iconic Turning Torso, Scandinavia’s tallest skyscraper. Designed by the renowned architect Santiago Calatrava, this building is a testament to modern architectural genius. The Turning Torso is not just a tall skyscraper, it is also a brilliant example of neo-futuristic architecture.

Standing 190 meters tall, with 57 floors, it offers an unparalleled view of the city and the Öresund strait. It is today a residential building with a “twist”, quite literally, as it twists a full 90 degrees from base to top. Since it is an active residential building, it is not always open to the public. To go up to the top floor and have a guided tour, please check ahead of time (There should be a button that allows you to book a tour, if not then most likely there aren’t none being offered).

Lund Cathedral crypt astronomical clock most visited

Lund Cathedral

Standing tall since the 12th century, the Lund Cathedral is a magnificent reflection of Romanesque architecture. Inside, you will find an ancient astronomical clock that chimes twice a day, an impressive crypt, and intricate stone sculptures. The cathedral’s rich history and architectural mastery make it a magnet for both pilgrims and visitors.

It is today the most visited cathedral in Sweden. The cathedral’s two towers are 55 meters high and have become a landmark for the area. The most famous sight in the crypt is the stone pillar embraced by the giant Finn, who turned into stone after trying to destroy the cathedral that he built because he wasn’t paid.

The astronomical clock, dating back to around 1425, is a magnificent sight. It shows, among other things, the different zodiac signs and the phases of the moon.

6 of the best beaches and coastal towns in Skåne, Sweden

Skanör

North of Helsingborg, and the gateway to the Kullaberg Nature Reserve, this tiny town really comes alive in the summer. A handful of sloping streets with pretty houses – some with pale-green paintwork, others with apple trees bursting with fruit in the front gardens – all lead down to the recently redeveloped harbour where there are a cluster of restaurants and cafés.

Mölle

THE BEACHES

Follow the road round the coast from Mölle Brandstation café and after a few minutes you’ll reach Fågelviken, a sand-shingle bay. It’s not the best beach the region has to offer but is ideal for a post-hike paddle. A short drive away, in the Kullaberg Nature Reserve , there’s also pebbly Ransvik beach, flanked by rocks, with a jetty and steps you can climb down into the water.

Mölle

The best spot for fika is Mölle Brandstation , the former-fire-station-turned-café beside the harbour with red tables and chairs outside and cool Scandinavian interiors. For lunch, head to Mölle Krukmakeri , a cute Italian pizzeria and café with a shady garden and a small pottery studio. It’s also fun to hire kayaks (book through Kullakajak.se ) and paddle out from the harbour around the peninsula.

A favourite with the Malmö smart set who want to escape the city for summer weekends, the dreamy town of Skanör, in the south-west tip of Sweden, backs onto the inland lagoons of the Flommen Nature Reserve and the sandy beach beyond. Quiet streets with low-level houses are arranged in a grid (ideal for pootling around on a bicycle), with the occasional picturesque square.

Skanör

A ribbon of white sand hugs the peninsula, stretching from Skanör to the neighbouring town of Falsterbo. Skanör harbour is bookended by colourful beach huts on one side and a curving sandy bay on the other; Falsterbo feels wilder, with sand dunes and a wooden boardwalk that leads down to a longer stretch of shore. Both are reminiscent of some of the beaches around Newquay in Cornwall.

Skanör

Hang out on the beach with the local families. At Skanör, the contemporary wood-and-glass Badhytten café (order mussels and chips, or a crisp salad) has a rooftop terrace and seats right on the sand – it’s the perfect spot for sundowners.

Made famous as the medieval town where the long-running detective television series Wallander was filmed (Scandinavia’s largest film studio is here too), this south coastal town has characterful cobblestone streets, pastel-coloured houses and quaint shops.

Where is hot in October? Our top 19 destinations

You’ll be spoilt for choice with all the gorgeous beaches: west of the town is Mossbystrand, backed by a nature reserve of the same name and known for its shallow waters and sheltered bay; east is Ryssbadet, where locals keep small boats in the sand dunes. From here, continue along the coast to Sandhammaren beach, a 12km strip of white, powdery sand backed by a pine forest. Be careful if you decide to swim: there are often strong sea currents.

Read more: Why you should visit Malmö now

Head to Söderberg & Sara bakery in town to pick up croissants (the custard doughnuts are also delicious) and a cappuccino, or a picnic lunch to take to the beach. To the west, there’s also the Svarte Beach Club , a renovated kiosk with a handful of tables and chairs on a wooden deck that overlooks the sand.

In Österlen, the south-eastern part of Skåne, Simrishamn is very similar in style to neighbouring Ystad and has a rich fishing past, which is marked by the herring sculpture down by the harbour.

Simrishamn

The sandy beach runs north for several miles from the harbour: rent a bike and cycle or walk along the footpath, stopping along the way for a dip in the sea.

Stenshuvud National Park near Simrishamn

Börje Olssons Skafferi is a great deli with counters piled with freshly baked sourdough bread and cheeses, plus salads and pies for lunch. If you visit in the summer, it’s also worth a trip to Mandelmanns Trädgårdar , a family-run organic farm and flower garden.

Often likened to the Hamptons because of the wealthy second-home owners who flock here in the summer, this northern town on the Bjäre peninsula has a handful of beaches within an easy drive and a buzzing harbour.

Båstad

The town beach is Skansenbadet but there’s also crabbing at Ingelstorp, a jetty at Torekov for sea swimming (afterwards lunch on shrimp toast at the lovely G Swensons Krog restaurant) and long, sandy Segelstorpsstrand, which is ideal for children.

Båstad

Visit the Kallbadhuset (cold bathhouse) at the end of a wooden bridge on Skansenbadet to try the hot-cold bathing routine favoured by the Swedes – go early in the morning and it will set you up for the rest of the day. The rocky beaches and jagged outcrops of the Hovs Hallar Nature Reserve are great for spotting sea birds; pick up the Skåneleden trail, which weaves through coastal meadows, or go snorkelling in the Kattegat Sea. Back in Båstad, have a fish- and-chip supper on the waterfront, or head to the legendary Pepe’s Bodega , a restaurant, bar and nightclub beside the harbour.

In this mellow, medieval town in the east the main industry is eel fishing (it’s also home to the Absolut Elyx vodka distillery ). Stately homes line the waterfront promenade, wooden boats bob in the marina and in the summer visitors make a beeline for the beach.

Åhus

Åhus is part of the 40km-long Åla coast, which extends all the way from Kristianstad down to Österlen. The sand is fine and white, constantly shifting along the dunes and close-to-the-shore reefs. Fishing nets often dry in the sun and the dunes are full of colourful wooden huts.

Åhus

There are a handful of restaurants along the harbour promenade: Åmund is a casual spot to people-watch over a beer. If you visit in July, don’t miss the popular 10-day Åhus Beachhandboll Festival when around 1,400 teams play matches on the sandbanks.

Helsingborg – a fusion of history, innovation and coastal beauty

The Swedish city of Helsingborg is a coastal gem. Recognised as one of Europe’s most innovative cities, it also boasts historical significance and spectacular nature.

  • Due to its pottery heritage, the Helsingborg region of northwest Skåne is known as Sweden’s ceramics district.
  • Kullagatan in central Helsingborg was the first shopping street in Sweden to be pedestrianised.
  • Helsingborg locals are keen coffee-drinkers and one of Sweden’s biggest coffee companies, Zoégas , has been based in the city since the 19th century.

A city of compelling contrast, the southern Sweden city of Helsingborg is steeped in history while it’s also celebrated for its innovation-driven spirit – so much so that it won second prize in the European Capital of Innovation Awards 2020 . Also known as “iCapital”, this annual prize is awarded to the European city best able to demonstrate its ability to harness innovation to improve the lives of its residents – something Helsingborg excels at.

In a joint effort, academia, businesses and associations have come together with residents to develop smart, sustainable solutions, resulting in projects targeting everything from food waste and loneliness to integration, equality and eco transport – such as electric, zero-emission ferries from Helsingborg to Helsingör.

There’s a lot more to Helsingborg than innovation, though. This charming city, located on the west coast of Sweden in the idyllic province of Skåne – right across the Öresund strait from Denmark – has a fascinating past, much of which is immortalised in its remarkably well-preserved old town. Add to that a wealth of culture and magnificent coastal nature and you have a dream destination offering something for everyone.

Helsingborg’s must-see historic architecture

Helsingborg’s status as a town was first recorded in 1085 and due to its political and military importance, it rose to prominence in the Middle Ages. Wandering the picturesque streets of the city’s old town, you’ll come across a string of significant buildings, including the medieval Kärnan tower . This fascinating edifice is the only remains of Helsingborg Castle, which was built under Danish rule at the beginning of the 14th century. On the opposite side of Öresund stands the fortress of Kronborg, and these two historic landmarks guarded the entrance between Kattegat and Öresund. Discover Kärnan from the inside by climbing the spiral staircase all the way to the roof terrace, where spectacular views across the cityscape and sea await.

A stone’s throw from Kärnan nestles another architectural highlight – Mariakyrkan (St. Mary’s Church). Dating back to the 12th century, it was later rebuilt in gothic style. The neo-Gothic Town Hall – inaugurated in 1897 – is hard to miss with its decorative façade, beautiful stained glass windows and tall clock tower.

Natural beauty spots and outdoor adventures

Helsingborg is surrounded by magnificent nature incorporating idyllic coastline and lush nature reserves. Take in acres of this natural wonderland on two wheels by cycling along the well-established routes running along these shores – and much further afield. Kattegattleden stretches across 395 kilometres, from Helsingborg and all the way to Gothenburg – via the beautiful province of Halland – further north. Along the way, you’ll experience cosy fishing villages, historic sites, sandy beaches and breath-taking viewpoints. Also consider the coastal trail, Sydkustleden (the south west trail), a 260 km stretch running from Helsingborg to Simrishamn on the southeast side of Sweden. Skåneleden and Öresundsleden are also great hiking alternatives.

Kullaberg , located 40 kilometres north of Helsingborg, is one of Sweden’s most cherished nature reserves and it’s easy to see why – it’s a dramatically beautiful peninsula. Set off on a hike along the many trails that snake through the varied terrain – spanning forest, cliffs and caves – or take in the natural beauty from the waterside in a kayak.

Hovs Hallar nature reserve in Bjärehalvön (Bjäre peninsula), with its beautifully rugged cliffs, is another must-visit spot. Located about 61 kilometres north of Helsingborg, it’s well worth the 50-minute car journey. Further inland, Söderåsen National Park spreads across an elongated bedrock ridge, and this is where you’ll find Skåne’s highest point at 212 metres above sea level.

If you fancy going for a swim, try the local 150-year-old custom of ‘ kallbad ’, cold bathing, in one of the three open-air bath houses of Pålsjöbaden , Kallis or Rååbaden. Helsingborg also offers several fine sand beaches, one of which also has its own palm trees, the Tropical Beach in the city centre.

Helsingborg’s cultural top spots

Helsingborg has a distinctive cultural identity and this is celebrated to the full at Dunkers Kulturhus (Dunker’s culture centre). Named after local industrialist Henry Dunker, this museum and art centre charts the history of the city from the Ice Age to the modern day and puts on all manner of exhibitions and events. The building, designed by Danish modernist Kim Utzon, is worth a visit in its own right.

A short walk from the city centre you’ll find the Fredriksdal museum and gardens . The biggest of its kind in Sweden, it will have you immersed in local agriculture and historic villages via authentic experiences and genuine environments – complete with farmyard animals and performers sharing stories of historic characters’ everyday lives.

Fifteen minutes by car or one hour’s walk from Fredriksdal , you’ll find Sofiero Castle and Gardens , with panoramic views of the Öresund strait. Built in 1864, and a former royal summer residence, its garden was voted the most beautiful garden in 2010.

North-West Skåne is known as Sweden’s ceramics district, home to a talented community of potters, sculptors and craftsmen using clay as their medium. Keramiskt Center Höganäs and Mölle Krukmakeri are among the most famous and both are well worth a visit, but also consider Wallåkra Stoneware Factory that has been making pottery on-site for over a century and invites you to witness the process and buy their wares. All potteries are reached by car in 20-40 minutes from Helsingborg.

A taste of Helsingborg – where to eat and drink

Helsingborg’s culinary culture focuses on local, seasonal produce. Restaurant Bara Vara bases its diverse menu on the ingredients available at any given time – think local lamb, freshly caught mussels and a medley of vegetables – and it’s a popular spot for a drink in the evening.

Perched on an elevated position at Landborgen with spectacular views across the water, with Denmark visible in the distance, Möllebacken Restaurang & Café is one of Helsingborg’s most cherished restaurants – and has been since 1912, when it served up its first waffle.

If you have a sweet tooth, make sure not to miss the award-winning pralines of Chocolatte chocolate factory , in central Helsingborg, and the premium liquorice of Lakritsfabriken , 2 kilometres from the city centre.

Don’t leave Helsingborg without sampling the local specialty “bulle med bulle” (bun with bun). This delightfully quirky snack consists of a bread roll stuffed with an oat-based chocolate ball – a much-loved Swedish treat. Ever the innovator, Helsingborg has never shied away from trying something new. This eccentric custom dates back to the 1930s.

Getting around Helsingborg is easy. Explore the city and its surroundings on foot or two wheels. Some of Sweden’s key bicycle routes – Kattegattleden and Sydkustleden included – run via Helsingborg. The local and regional bus network is well established, and ferries run to Helsingör in Denmark several times a day. A common custom is to ‘tura’, a local expression for riding the ferry without disembarking, and instead focusing on drinking, eating and indulging the scenic views.

You’ll find a broad spectrum of accommodation in and around Helsingborg. Housed in a turn-of-the-century bank building, The Vault Hotel is a centrally located Helsingborg landmark, offering 56 high-end rooms and suites as well as a restaurant and bar. Best described as boutique-style, Hotel V in the city centre is another popular option. A little further out (33 km north of Helsingborg), Hotel Rusthållargården offers high-end accommodation as well as a spa, golf course, restaurant and more.

Helsingborg has many sights of cultural interest. Once you’ve explored the old town, head to Sofiero Slott , some 5 km north of Helsingborg. Having started its days as a farm, it was converted into a palace – replete with spectacular gardens – in 1865 by Prince Oscar of Sweden and his wife Sophia of Nassau.

The nature surrounding Helsingborg can be experienced in many ways, for example on two wheels or from the waterside in a kayak.

Helsingborg is a family hotspot. Visit Kärnan fortress and climb the stairs to the top – the panoramic views are as thrilling as the history of this medieval, four-floor landmark. A playground with a difference, Surflekan is a surf-inspired variant. Located on the Gröningen seafront, it offers a giant jellyfish slide, hammocks, surfboards, giant waves and more. Also check out the medieval-themed playground, Slottshagen, next to Kärnan.

Another hit with kids is the 1898 locomotive shed that now serves as an adventure-packed museum, Järnvägens Museum (The Railway Museum) in Ängelholm, 30 minutes by train or car from Helsingborg. Its Locomotion simulator experience will have you travel in a turn-of-the-century steam locomotive that gradually transforms into today’s speed trains.

Ystad and Österlen, Sweden – Explore the best place in Skåne

Looking for the ultimate weekend away in Österlen, Skåne or Ystad, Sweden? Here’s the best beaches, farmshops, restaurants and experiences you cannot miss!

Road tripping to Österlen, Skåne and stopping along the way in Ystad, Sweden’s most picturesque seaside village, has been one of my favourite trips in Sweden . It had wanted to visit for a while so when we finally got the chance I was so excited. Scrolling through the “Ystad Sweden” and “Österlen” search sections on Pinterest, I was determined to find all of these beautiful places to visit in Skåne and add them to our itinerary.

Surrounded by images of cosy cafes with tables inside greenhouses, farm shops selling local produce and beaches that looked almost tropical, I had high hopes. Österlen is home to some of Skåne’s most intriguing sites. Ale Stenar and Stenhuvud National Park being only two of them!

Discover the best Restaurants in Ystad, gårdsbutik and farmshops in Österlen and the best experiences summer in Sweden has to offer!

We spent a total of 3 days in Österlen and were not disappointed! I hope this guide helps you to plan your dream trip! If you’re visiting Österlen and Ystad, Sweden will not disappoint you!

  • Cafes you have to visit

Top Tips For Visiting Österlen and Ystad, Sweden

Where to stay in ystad.

You can find so many beautiful bed and breakfasts around this area, wherever you look! We wanted to mix it up a bit with this trip and decided to do one night camping and one at a hotel. This way we managed to travel a little more budget and stay in natural Österlen, Skåne’s most diverse landscape.

We decided to stay one night camping near Kivik and one night in a bed and breakfast near Ystad.

Österlen has some of Skåne’s cosiest B&Bs

We stayed at Logi Gamlegård (also called Aura Österlen) and it was beautiful! We had wanted more of a boutique farm stay type vibe for our trip this was perfect! The cost of accomodation in Österlen, and Sweden in general, is usually quite high so for a more budgets stay it was great value for money!

As well as being a bed and breakfast, Logi Gamlegård also have a yoga studio connected to the reception. Here they run weekly yoga sessions and often retreats that include meditation and yoga classes!

Where to stay in Österlen, Skåne,Ystad, Sweden

Österlen’s best camping spots

Camping in Sweden is usually very easy, with their public access laws allowing you to camp basically anywhere. You just need to make sure that you are a distance enough away from private property. Unfortunately, when camping, Österlen is one of the worst places to find free camping in Sweden, being such a popular summer destination. Nearer the cities the only space to camp is in paid camping grounds. The woodland areas have no camping signs until you get further away from the city towards the national parks.

It is possible to camp nearer to Kivik where the Skåneleden hiking trail passes through Stenshuvud National Park. We ended up finding a beautiful field overlooking the water where we stayed for the evening. It was only 20 minutes east of Ystad, Sweden by car. When it comes to choosing a spot, my best advice is to start scouting early! If you take a look at the area on Google Maps, that way you can see the best possibilities first!

Cafes and Restaurants in Österlen, Skåne

Skåne is known for its farmshops and eateries, especially when it comes to picturesque country style Cafes. Österlen is home to some of the best in Sweden for coffee, cakes and takeaway produce!

Åberg’s Trädgård and Cafe

Åberg’s Trädgård and Cafe is exactly the quaint, cosy place you imagine when you are planning your trip to Österlen, Skåne. It is traditionally a big nursery, with rows and rows of plants for sale! Set up in the most aesthetically pleasing way possible. The cafe is an extension of this, all the food made with the produce from the nursery. Because of this, their menu changes daily depending on what food they have on offer.

We had beetroot and goats cheese pie, spinach and cheese pie and a bean soup! They were all SO delicious, I couldn’t recommend it any more as a lunch spot!

Gårdsbutik, Ystad and Österlen, Skåne, Sweden

Olof Viktors

Olof Viktors is a beautiful cafe and garden. They have the most delicious cakes (fika), and lunch too! You can eat either inside their farm style cottage, or in one of the many cosy spots in the garden. We took a berry slice, a chocolate cake, a dammsugare and a summer pie and they were all perfect! They sell local produce such as jams and sausages in their farm shop – all grown or made in Österlen or Skåne.

The Best Restaurant: Kivid and Ystad, Sweden

Upp eller ner, ystad.

Located in Ystad, this restaurant is a very nice mix of casual with a elegant flare. We risked it a little and did not book ahead (would always recommend this), but were lucky to arrive as another table were leaving! “Upp Eller Ner” comes from the fact that the restaurant is actually connected to an underground ice-creamery and bar! We took a table outside, in the town square, and enjoyed some pasta, mussels and a delicious burger!

Gårdens Cafe & Vedugn, Kivik

This place was recommended to us by the friends we were travelling with who had been there before and could not stop raving about the delicious salad they had eaten! I don’t know about you, but it’s not often that I come out of a pizza place recommending the salad to everyone ! But I can confirm that they were very right! It is probably the best restaurant in Kivik and one of the nicest to sit in too! Although they specialise in Pizza, they had a few other things on their menu including salads, and a charcuterie board.

Some Other Recommendations

Unfortunately being in the area for only a few days we didn’t get to try all the places we had on the list. I guess that just gives us a great excuse to go back though! Here’s a few other places I have had recommended to me!

Mellby Klockagård, Österlen

I am honestly gutted we didn’t make it here! I remember reading about it on a blog post from Ourfoodstories and their trip to Skåne and immediately wanting to visit. Unfortunately it is only open on weekends for dinner and you do need to book in advance! They have a seasonal menu that changed every night, using a lot of ingredients from the garden!

Örum 119, Ystad, Sweden

Örum 119 is a bed and breakfast with a restaurant that is open for dinner! They serve wood fired pizza and we have heard from a few different people that it is AMAZING! Unfortunately you also have to book this in advance so we missed out this time!

Pastafabriken, Ystad Sweden

I have also heard many good things about this place, I think more for the aesthetic and feel of the place rather than it being the best pasta in the world! It looks super cosy and we hope to check it out next time

Places to visit in Skåne

Stenhuvud national park.

Stenshuvud National Park covers quite a big area in the east of Österlen. Only an hour East of Ystad, Sweden’s nature is at it’s best! It is a big national park with luscious forests and almost tropical beaches that make you feel like you are in Thailand of Bali instead of the south of Sweden!

There is a popular hiking trail (Skåneleden) that runs though Southern Sweden and is a great way to discover the nature of Österlen. it is a very popular route for walkers and campers in the summer time! Much of this walk goes through Stenshuvud National Park, so it can be a great place for a beach side camping holiday with over 100km of hiking too!

One of the best beaches in the area is Knäbäckshusen ! It was super busy when we were there in the middle of summer but  would be a lot quieter if you went in the spring or autumn months. There are quieter beaches that can only be accessed by foot, on hiking trails through the national park! If you are looking for a more private spot then this is definitely the way to go!

Haväng is another park area, similar to Stenshuvud, but with a much bigger stretch of sandy white beach! We took quite a short walk here but enjoyed the landscape a lot! We saw a lot of hikers passing through as this is also a part of the Skåneleden hike! Getting here is easy, you just park in the public car park and walk through the gate into the park area, across the grass and down on to the beach!

Ale Stenar/ The Ale Stones

Ale Stenar (translated to Ale Stones in English) is 20 minutes from Ystad, Sweden does have it’s very own Stonge Henge, only a little bit smaller! On the edge of a cliff in a luscious green meadow, Ale Stenar dates back to the mid 1500s. Like Stone Henge, it is a circle made up of 59 rocks placed in a position that can measure the sunrise at all different times of the year. It is a small walk to get here but it makes a nice loop if you start the walk in the car park and go up to the rocks via the meadow, and back via the harbour! At the harbour there are a few nice restaurants and cafes to eat at on the way back! From here it is only a 5 minute walk back to the car.

Ale Stenar, Ystad Sweden

Hallamölla Waterfall

Located 20 minutes west of Kivik, Hallamölla waterfall Skåne’s biggest waterfall at 23m in height. It is part of a bigger nature park with a few longer forest walks. It is named after a watermill of the same name located just a few hundred metres up stream, now called Hallamölla Gård, which has been transformed in to a super cosy bed and breakfast.

Hallamölla Waterfall in Österlen, Skåne, Sweden

The Best Farm Shops or Gårdsbutik, Österlen

Österlen is known to have some of Skåne’s best farm shops. In Swedish the direct translation is “ Gårdsbutik ” – meaning garden shop. Most of these shops are connected directly either to farms that have other things to do or to businesses that specialise in natural products. Here’s a list of the best gårdsbutik Österlen has to offer!

Österlen Kryddor Gårdsbutik

Directly translated to Österlen Spices, this farm shop sells everything from your traditional herbs, to fun exotic inspired salts, candles and local jams! It is owned by the most lovely couple who make most of the products themselves, and are happy to chat about them if you have any questions!

My favourite thing about Österlen Kryddor was their Lavender Morning which we were lucky enough to coincide our trip with. Arriving at 5am, we were taken through the spice shop into a breakfast room where we were given a delicious toast with cheese and ham, as well as yoghurt with berries, juice and coffee! As it got later and the sun began to rise, we all went out into the lavender field where we were given a talk about growing and baking with lavender, meanwhile sipping on prosecco and sparkling lavender. After the talk we were free to walk around the fields, take photos, and pick as much lavender as we wanted to take home with us! They hold this event 3 times a year, usually at the beginning of July when the lavender is in its full bloom.

Kiviks Musteri – Cider Brewery

Kiviks is quite a big brand of cider here in Sweden, both alcoholic and non alcoholic! If you have been living here at all you have probably bought a bottle or two from your local ICA. Kiviks, named after the local village, is brewed right here and most of the land where the apples are grown can be seen in the local landscape. Not only is this a great place to go for discount non-alcoholic ciders, but they also have a cafe, restaurant and a small museum and orchard where you can learn about the brewing process, the history of the company and see all the different apples they grow for different taste profiles.

Karl Fredrik på Eklaholm

I am not all sure of the hype for this place, other than it being a really pretty garden nursery with exotic plants and an antiques room, but apparently Karl Fredrik is a big deal here in Ystad and Sweden. There is a popular TV programme on the lifestyle channels here where they follow the farm and nursery, so it is a pretty cool place for a lot of people to visit! To you, I will recommend it because it is a really nice farm shop and a bit different to your usual nursery! We ended up buying a plant and hand blown glass vase here!

The Best To Visit in Österlen, Skåne

Visit ystad, sweden.

Ystad is not actually a part of Österlen but it is just on the outskirts. Picture big flowering plants climbing the walls of colourful old wooden houses that line narrow, cobblestone streets leading up to the big town square where flags hang across the road like it is carnival time. There you have Ystad.

This coastal town is one of the biggest in the area, with many of the hotels and restaurants being located here in the city centre. This is a great place to base yourself if you don’t have a car, or you want close access from your accomodation to shops and restaurants. It is a big summer city and can get quite busy with Swedish tourists on their summer breaks during peak season! Ystad is known for its beach, spa and the wondrous nature that surrounds it.

To do in Ystad, Sweden:

  • Stroll around the town, visiting the markets in the town square to buy fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Visit Ystad Saltsjöbad for a spa day by the beach
  • Take a swim or a stroll along the waters edge at Ystad beach

Visit Simrishamn – A cosy harbour town

Simrishamn is another of the slightly bigger towns in Österlen, with quite a few shops and restaurants in the town centre. Here you will find the Österlen Museum, a beautiful harbour side walk, and Tobisviken Strand, a long white sandy beach. Although not as picturesque as some of the other smaller villages, Simrishamn has some really great restaurants (including Gårdens Cafe & Vedugn).

Visit Brantevik – The small fishing village

Simrishamn is a smaller coastal town with not much more than a few cafes and a harbour. This seems a beautiful place to stay if you have a car and are looking for a bit more of quiet seaside getaway. Other than staying here, it is worth visiting on your way past just for a short walk around as it is an incredibly picturesque town!

How to Go Off the Beaten Path in the Nordics

From folklore and food to landscapes and literature, find adventure and enrichment in the lesser-known regions of denmark, norway, sweden, and finland..

  • Copy Link copied

The Nordic countries have a rich shared history. But each also has a distinct culture that beckons soul-searchers and adventurers alike to get off the beaten path and immerse themselves in local traditions, discovering the landscapes and experiences outside of the bustling capitals.

Breathe deeply and revive yourself with Norway’s fresh mountain air, exploring pristine glaciers and towering fjords. In Denmark , travel back in time to a world where half-timbered houses and cobblestone streets bring storybooks to life. Relaxation and rejuvenation await in Finland, the “sauna capital of the world.” Enjoy Sweden’s “grape escapes” in the wine region that’s only recently getting the recognition it deserves. Here are some of the Nordic countries’ lesser-known treasures.

See Hans Christian Andersen’s Denmark

Denmark has more than 400 islands, but Funen—also called Fyn (“Foon”) by the Danes—is one of the most enchanting. Here, thatched farmhouses, serene beaches, forests, and grasslands are a 1.5-hour train ride from Copenhagen. Known as “Denmark’s Garden Island,” Funen features more than 120 castles and manor houses framed by richly varied flora.

Among the most grand is Egeskov Castle , where dahlias, roses, and fuchsias are as much a feast for the eyes as the nose. It’s easy to see how the Renaissance-era spires, knight’s hall, and moat might have played muse to Hans Christian Andersen, author of The Snow Queen and The Little Mermaid .

The main town of Funen, Odense , was his hometown and to wander here is to visit the past. You can follow a cobblestone lane to the tiny yellow house where Andersen spent his childhood or stroll through the atmospheric H.C. Andersen Fairy Tale Garden. Sculptures inspired by his stories dot the grounds and a wooden staircase invites you to unplug and watch the ducks float by on the Odense River.

Check out art and design in Aalborg

Art and architecture fans won’t want to miss Aalborg , a juxtaposition of northern Denmark’s rich history and futurist design. Along the intimate streets of Old Town, flowered trellises climb vibrantly colored walls of 17th-century homes accessed via cobblestone streets.

It’s also the birthplace of Jørn Utzon, architect of the Sydney Opera House, who designed Aalborg’s Music House and Utzon Centre with facades that function as urban sculptures. Envisioned as an experience, Utzon Center is more than a museum of Nordic architecture, featuring separate pavilions that surround a center courtyard and shelter guests from the adjacent waterfront’s winds.

Another building that’s a masterpiece itself is the Kunsten Museum of Modern Art . Celebrated Finnish architect Alvar Aalto designed the marble and glass facade rising from the surrounding green forest. Inside, parabola-shaped skylights, lobbies, and galleries showcase contemporary Nordic and international works that the design cleverly protects from yet still illuminates with the sun, giving the impression that traditional barriers between indoors and out have been broken. With the sun’s changing rays, no experience is the same twice.

Taste wine in historic Sweden

A landscape view of the verdant Ästad vineyard in Sweeden

Ästad is just one of Sweden’s 30 vineyards where varietals include whites, rosés, and pinot noir.

Courtesy of Visit Sweden//Jerker Andersson

For more casual wine fans and oenophiles alike, check out the undiscovered art of Swedish viniculture. Ferry connections from North Denmark make exploring southern Sweden (or Norway) easy.

The same climate that gives Sweden’s Skåne region the reputation as the country’s breadbasket makes for ideal grape-growing conditions. Here, you can sip whites, reds, and rosés produced from some 22,000 vines at Hällåkra Vineyard . Enjoy unfussy local fare like cheese and charcuterie boards at picnic tables—it’s not unusual to see visitors in hiking boots and t-shirts.

At Arilds Vineyard , you can even go glamping among the vines. For more traditional accommodations, head to Ästad Vineyard in Halland. The property has the Michelin-starred Restaurant ÄNG, a spa with an underwater wood-fired sauna, and guestrooms and villas with copious windows that highlight the tranquility of the surrounding beech forest.

Swim in Luleå

For a beach experience, Luleå has several swimming areas within walking distance of the city center, as well as hiking trails like those around the Hertsöträsk area. Exploring on foot is a journey through history, and hikers can traverse what was once a seabed or Bälingeberget mountain, where the Ice Age shaped the rocks forming a distinctive summit.

Stone has played a vital role here since the dawn of time. A 15th-century stone church surrounded by red wooden cottages anchors the church town of Gammelstad , once Luleå’s capital. It’s Scandinavia’s best-preserved example of infrastructure built to temporarily host distant worshippers who until the 1950s traveled here in difficult weather conditions. Gammelstad today is a living museum and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Hike the legendary landscapes of Helgeland

A chid wading in the vibrant waters and sandy beaches of Helgeland in northern Norway

If you’re a UNESCO enthusiast or outdoorsy, then you won’t want to miss Norway’s Helgeland Coast , and the Vega Archipelago within it, each a UNESCO-designated site. The route that hugs the coast of Helgeland is one of the world’s most beautiful drives. The midnight sun offers endless summer days and in winter you have a chance to marvel at the northern lights.

Helgeland’s landscapes are legendary. To experience nature here is to learn the tales Norwegians have passed down through millennia of generations. The mountaintops, known as the Seven Sisters , are a collection of peaks said to be troll maidens turned to stone by the sun after disobeying their father. The proximity of the Sisters means that a skilled hiker can ascend them in one day.

A view of a small rocky island surrounded by green water on the Torghatten hike along the Helgeland Coast of Norway.

Torghatten is one of the most popular hikes along the Helgeland Coast.

Courtesy of Visit Norway/Sven-Erik Knoff

The mountain of Torghatten is renowned for the hole that runs through its center, allowing the sun to peek through. Legend has it that the void is the hat of a king that froze to stone. The walk to it is much easier than ascending the Seven Sisters and 30 minutes of beginner-level climbing yields stunning views across the Helgeland Coast. Plus, the trails of the Vega Archipelago are a paradise for cyclists , and kayakers and anglers delight in the waters of the sheltered islets.

Eat farm-fresh food in Røros

The wintry climate of Røros fueled another generation of storytellers and visitors can discover the 18th-century wooden homes that helped inspire Disney’s Frozen . The town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is well-known among Norwegians for its enchanting Christmas Market when snow blankets the timbered stalls lining intimate streets and reindeer are ready for sleigh rides. These enchanting beasts are wild and tame in the region, and you can go for a ride throughout winter before tucking into a hearty meal.

Røros is Norway’s local- and slow-food capital. The cool climate and long summer nights lend the cheeses and farm-fresh produce distinctive flavors and sampling wild game, fish, or a soul-satisfying soup at family-owned restaurants like Kaffestuggu provide sustenance and a cultural perspective.

Dishes enjoyed here today reflect what the Indigenous Sami tribes have foraged and hunted for centuries while living in their distinctive lavvo turf huts . You can tour one within walking distance of Røros ’ center.

The region of Telemark is a study in contrasts. Here you’ll find idyllic coastlines and rugged mountains for adventure (bungee jumping, climbing, and biking abound); farm-fresh fare plated in resplendent settings; and everything from tucked-away mountain cottages with few bells and whistles to bellboys at the historic Dalen Hotel . The fairytale-like yellow façade of the Dalen pops against the surrounding verdant mountains and it’s easy to imagine the four kings that have stayed here while gazing at the wooden dragon heads, towers, cornices, and balconies before savoring a five-course dinner with wine.

For a wellness experience on the water, try the Soria Moria Sauna . Modern and dreamlike, the building’s peaked silhouette features wooden shingles, in homage to the region’s building techniques, interspersed with golden shingles. They glimmer like the scales of fish in the water that the sauna sits seemingly suspended over.

Finland’s saunas

Those seeking restorative travel should put Finnish sauna culture at the top of their “must-do” list. The country has a population of 5.6 million people but more than 3 million saunas—the national art of relaxation is part of UNESCO’s World Heritage list.

The historic city of Tampere has 60 public saunas, the most in the country, with options including rooftop rituals, floating saunas, and restaurant spas such as Kuuma that enhance the social and communal aspects of the practice with a living room-like atmosphere. One of the most charming saunas is also one of the most historic. Rajaportti is Finland’s oldest operating public sauna and not much has changed since 1906. At its heart is a massive woodburning stove to heat stones that glow and spark. New guests quickly learn a word that’s integral to Finns: löyly , the steam that arises from water thrown onto the hot stones.

Another favorite nearby Tampere in Mänttä is Serlachius Museum’s new Art Sauna . The architectural masterwork is a contemporary journey of light, nature, and creative inspiration that marries the work of Finland’s most respected painters and designers via concrete and stone, and oak and aspen.

Within larger cities, there’s respite as well. Helsinki’s traditional Lonna Sauna , built solely with natural materials, is easy to access via public transportation from the city center, as is the newer Löyly sauna. At Löyly, try wood-burning and smoke saunas before taking a refreshing plunge into the sea, as Finns do. The café and expansive outdoor patio are favorites to satisfy an appetite after you’ve soothed your soul.

Turku’s fine and traditional foods

Finland’s original capital of Turku awaits epicureans who want to get a taste of history and some of the country’s finest cuisine. Like all great trading gateways, international flavors commingle with what’s fresh and local. Turku is home to the world’s largest archipelago, so fish here is plentiful and Finland’s finest agricultural lands surround the city. You’ll find duck, elk, and venison at restaurants like Kaskis (where chef Erik Mansikka earned Finland’s first Michelin star outside Helsinki).

For a more casual experience, don’t miss Karelian pasties. The rye pockets filled with rice porridge or barley are ubiquitous throughout the region. Topped with salted butter, they all pair savory and sweet, a glorious study in contrasts like the most satisfying adventures.
