But on top of that, it’s set in a magnificent location that makes it an ideal gateway to explore the area .

I’ve personally spent time in Playa del Carmen many times. I recently went back to the city and revisited some of my favorite attractions around the area, and I even went on a few excursions to places I had never visited!

The thing is, there are virtually dozens of day trips from Playa del Carmen and around to keep you hooked for weeks. It’ll make you want to come back, you’ll see!

In any case, I have put together this guide with the best Playa del Carmen excursions to make it easier for you to plan your next vacation.

Tulum has become an undisputed gem in the Mayan Riviera . At first, it was the powdery coastline and low-key living that attracted tourists.

Now its attractions include a foodie scene to die for, a chic bohemian vibe, appealing beach bars, and options to fit all budgets, just to name a few. Of course, this is on top of the spectacular Tulum beaches and nature.

The most scenic Mayan archaeological site is also located here . Perched on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea, the Tulum ruins will cast a spell on you. Their breathtaking views and the site’s fascinating history are a powerful combo!

This ancient city was built as a fortress to protect the area from invasions. You’ll get to see the thick walls surrounding it on three sides, and its main pyramid, which used to be a lighthouse.

Swim in Cenotes near Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen is a strategic location to go on a cenote spree. Because let’s face it, you can never visit enough cenotes- once you’ve tried one, you’ll want them all! 

Cenote Jardin del Eden , for example, honors its name with paradise-worthy surroundings full of vegetation. It’s only 20 minutes from Playa del Carmen and you can easily get there by colectivo . It’s an open cenote with very clear water, so it’s great for snorkeling!

Cenote Cristalino means “crystal-clear” in Spanish, so you can imagine what awaits here. This is considered one of the most beautiful cenotes around Playa del Carmen, with dreamy clear waters, and not as crowded as other cenotes. It’s also easy to get to, so it’s a win from every angle!

Completing the trifecta, there’s Cenote Azul , which stands out for its bright turquoise waters. This is one of the biggest cenotes in Mexico, and has both shallow and deep areas, making it great for the whole family. 

These 3 cenotes are all close to each other and in a very practical location between Tulum and Playa. They make for a fantastic day trip!

Visit the Coba Ruins

Swim Responsibly with Whale Sharks

Go on a Cozumel Day Trip from Playa del Carmen

When it comes to day tours, Cozumel is one of the top destinations . The island is gorgeous! Besides boasting white-sand beaches and being a diving hotspot, it offers great snorkeling.

To get to Cozumel, you’ll need to take the ferry . The Ferry Terminal is located in Av. Benito Juárez 239, merely two blocks from 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen.

There you’ll board either an Ultramar or a Winjet ferry, both of which take around 40 minutes to complete the journey.

The island is so big that, if you choose to visit on your own, you’ll need to plan in advance where you want to go and how . In case you decide to go on a tour instead, you’ll find the greatest ones below.

Rainy Day? Take a Cooking Class

Days in the Mayan Riviera are usually warm and sunny, but even paradise has rainy days . Especially in the summer, mainly in the form of showers. If this happens, don’t worry. Mexico is much more than beaches and jungle… and one great example is food!

Mexican cuisine is famous around the world for a reason. I know, you know, everyone knows that you’re going to miss those delicious tacos and quesadillas when you’re back home, are you not?

Why not learn how to make them yourself so you can soothe the craving? Cooking classes are one of the best activities in town.

Encircled by the world’s second-biggest reef and blanketed in acres of untamed tropical forest the Yucatan Peninsula is an exciting destination on its own, and the Playa del Carmen ’s proximity to Mayan ruins, coral reefs, and cenotes make it all the more appealing. 

As an excellent springboard for the area, Playa del Carmen hosts a medley of day trip adventures: from low-key islands to wild adventure parks. Plus its central location between Cancún and Tulum means you can visit a string of bucket-list sights in less than an hour’s drive.

Go cenote-hopping on the Yucatan Peninsula

If there’s one thing worth dragging yourself away from the shores of Playa del Carmen, it’s the cenote  (freshwater springs). Under the thick jungles of the Riviera Maya lies a dreamy underworld of natural turquoise pools and water-filled caverns. Swim amidst clear-as-glass waters, with stalactites overhead and ancient boulders beneath your feet, while spider monkeys and iguanas roam the lush tropical forest surrounding you. 

The Mayan civilization revered the cenotes and made sacrifices here as offerings to the gods. Today, cenotes are equally venerated by outdoorsy travelers drawn to this unique setting.

Over 6,000 cenotes are peppered around the Yucatán Peninsula , and a few of the lesser-known ones are found near Playa del Carmen. A trio of cenotes – Azul, Cristalino, and Eden – are located side by side, making it easy to do a cenote-hopping tour of your own in just one day. All three are open-air cenotes with water deep enough for grownups to plunge into from the cliff’s edge and shallow pools for the little ones to wade in. 

How to get to the cenotes

The three cenotes are just a 25-minute drive south along 307 highway. Each cenote has its own entrance gate, car park, and changing facilities. To get there on public transport, head to the lineup of colectivos (shared vans) on Avenida Juarez, under the highway underpass, and catch one going in the direction of Tulum. Let the driver know where you’re going, and he’ll drop you off at the cenote’s entrance.

Snorkel Akumal to swim with wild turtles

Don’t let the inviting panorama of swaying palm trees and sugary sand fool you – the real star of Akumal lies beneath its water surface. Thanks to the seagrass meadows and the protective Mesoamerican Reef, Akumal is the best place to snorkel with turtles in the Riviera Maya. If you’re lucky, you might even spot manta rays and squid. 

It’s mandatory to join a guided tour if you want to snorkel within the protected area. Standard prices M$300 (US$15) per person includes snorkeling gear and life vests. Seafood restaurants and hotels line the beach, serving fresh but overpriced seafood, ceviche and tacos. 

How to get to Akumal

By private car, Akumal is just 40 minutes from Playa. Drive south along Highway 307, taking the exit to Akumal playa (beach). Continue to the beach, and there’s plenty of parking close to the beach entrance. If you don’t drive, take a colectivo from Juarez Avenue towards Tulum. Let the driver know you’re going to Akumal and he’ll drop you by the highway exit, which is a 15-minute walk to the beach.

Explore laid-back Isla Cozumel in a Jeep

Docking into Isla Cozumel , the first thing you’ll notice are the schools of technicolored fish swimming in the shimmering spearmint water beneath the pier. The beach by the ferry terminal is sparkling clean yet gloriously empty, which begs the question: where are the tourists? 

With its low-key flair and empty beaches, Cozumel is where Playenses (Playa del Carmen locals) go to escape from the hubbub of the mainland. Time your visit to the days when there are no cruises docked here, and you’ll literally have the island to yourself. To explore the island inside out, hire a Jeep for the day and drive the 30-mile (48km) loops around the island. 

First, drop in at San Gervasio Maya ruins, a pilgrimage center for the Mayans. Head southeast and drive alongside the rugged windward coast until you reach Punta Sur Ecological Park . Spot crocodiles on a boat ride on its saltwater marsh and climb to the top of the Celarain Lighthouse – both of which are included in your entrance ticket. End your day trip on a high note with a snorkeling excursion to El Cielo, where you can swim off the world’s second-biggest reef, the Mesoamerican Reef.

How to get to Isla Cozumel

Cozumel is an easy 45-minute ferry ride from Playa del Carmen center. High-speed ferries depart regularly, daily. Ultramar and Winjet run the route but on different schedules. Both have comfortable, air-conditioned ferries that leave on time. Ticket prices start from US$25 each way.

Marvel at the ruins of Tulum 

Reclining majestically on the clifftops overlooking the azure waves, the Tulum archaeological site sets itself apart from other ancient cities with an atypical coastal setting. These ruins may not have the immaculately-restored pyramids of Chichén Itzá , but they capture your imagination with a clear grid layout and temple structures.

You can easily see the Tulum ruins in two hours – don’t forget your swimsuit as you’d want to take a dip in the beach beneath the ruins (although access has been closed since the pandemic started). You definitely won’t be alone at the Tulum ruins, arrive at 9am for the best chance to have the place to yourself.

After exploring the Tulum ruins, duck into the Mystika Tulum right by the exit. The interactive digital museum takes your senses on a journey through the Maya cosmology. Immerse in the planetarium dome and look around the mirror-filled square room – you’ll leave with renewed perspectives. Entry is pricier than average, but its outstanding visuals please both adults and kids. 

How to get to Tulum ruins

The Tulum archaeological zone is an easy one-hour drive south along the 307 Highway from Playa del Carmen. If you prefer private transport, take a colectivo from Avenida Juarez in the direction of Tulum. The driver will stop you close to the entrance. The ADO bus also runs hourly services from Playa del Carmen to Tulum ruins, with comfortable reclining seats and air conditioning.

Escape the crowds at the secret cenote at Laguna de Kaan Luum

When you tire of the crowds, take time out in the little-known Laguna de Kaan Luum, a perfectly circular lagoon that sparkles in different shades of blue under the sunlight. A cenote sits right in the middle of the lagoon, its dark indigo waters shimmering in contrast to the shallow aqua patches. Climb the viewing tower, and you’ll see what I mean. 

Mainly popular with locals, Kaan Luum has miraculously escaped the major tourist radar despite being just a 15-minute drive from Tulum town. You’ll find a trickle of visitors if you get here before 11 am or after 3 pm, but it’s busy around lunchtime. Bring a picnic lunch – fresh coconuts and beer are sold here – and you can combine a visit to the Tulum ruins with an afternoon swinging on the rainbow-colored hammocks, laying out on the dock, and soaking in the knee-deep water. 

How to get to Kaan Luum

Kaan Luum is an hour’s drive from Playa del Carmen. Car is the easiest way to get there, driving south along the 307 highway. Getting there by public transport is possible but tedious: you’ll need to change at Tulum to a colectivo heading towards Felipe Carillo. However, these colectivos do not run frequently, and it can be challenging to find one on your way back. Alternatively, book a standup paddleboard tour – transportation is usually included.

Go zip-lining and ATVing on the Ruta de los Cenotes

In the nearby town of Puerto Morelos, a 23-mile (37km) paved road cuts through the dense jungles inland, connecting a melange of cenotes and eco-adventure parks. These parks are one-stop shops complete with zipline circuits, ATV jungle trails, magical cenotes, and restaurants. They might be slightly commercial, but they promise both adults and children a thrilling good time and rarely disappoint. 

One of our favorites is Selvática , which boasts 10 different zip lines, flying fox circuits, and a bungee swing. Cenotes Zapote Ecopark is home to four different cenotes, including one with prehistoric sloth fossils found 50m deep. Siete Bocas is a massive underground cenote with seven openings, where shafts of sunlight beam in and create a dramatic setting.

How to get to Ruta de los Cenotes

The driving time to the start of the Ruta de los Cenotes is roughly 35 minutes from Playa del Carmen. Depending on which eco-park you’re visiting, it’s another five to 30 minutes from there by car. There’s no public transport to the Ruta de los Cenotes. Tours to the eco-adventure parks are plentiful, with transportation from Playa del Carmen included. 

Meander the artsy cobblestone streets of Valladolid

Culturally minded travelers will not want to miss this cute colonial town. As the closest town to Chichen Itza, Valladolid is a popular launchpad for visitors to the new world wonder. Yet, it’s somehow retained a strong sense of Yucatecan identity, moving to its own mellow, laidback beat. The cobblestoned streets of this pueblo magico (magical town) are flanked by pastel-colored colonial buildings, leafy gardens, and vintage Volkswagen Beetles. Women saunter around in the traditional embroidered huipil , buying fresh tortillas from street stands and shopping for fruit.

Its historical center, crowned by the prominent stonewalled Iglesia de San Servacio , sprawls out in a maze of artisanal shops, restaurants, and cantinas. Grab a snack in the mercado municipal (town market) before strutting down the photogenic Calzada de los Frailes, a street lined with boutiques and galleries converted from old colonial houses. 

Poke into the Casa de los Venados to admire one of the largest collections of pre-Hispanic artwork in Mexico. Try Yucatecan staples at the historic El Mesón del Marqués , a glorious hacienda-style restaurant overlooking the main square. End the day trip with a dip in Cenote Zaci, a sinkhole just a 10-minute walk from the center.

 How to get to Valladolid

Valladolid is one hour and 55 minutes northwest of Playa del Carmen. It’s easily accessible by car: take the 305D highway north and then west along the 108 tolled highway. There’s a toll fee of M$230 (US$11) each way, but the new road cuts down travel time by 20 minutes. ADO bus has regular departures from Playa del Carmen to Valladolid, with one-way fares starting from M$206 (US$9.85).

10. Chichén Itzá

Designated one of the New Seven Wonders of the World , Chichén Itzá is a tourist staple in the area.

It’s one of the most visited archeological sites in the country as well as one of the best-preserved Mayan ruins in Mexico.

While the large central pyramid called the Kukulkan Pyramid is the most iconic and recognizable feature of the site, the area includes other ruins and exhibits to check out.

Chichén Itzá is a good three hours’ drive away from Playa del Carmen, but it’s a trip many travelers make, both within Mexico and from abroad, to visit the historic landmark .

Coba is another Mayan archeological site that up until 2020 , you were able to climb the main pyramid.

While the ruins are much smaller and less visited compared to Chichén Itzá, Coba is still worth a visit if you have time.

The village is tucked away in the jungle, so you’ll definitely feel like Indiana Jones walking or bicycling through the dirt paths, checking out the preserved huts and ball courts along the way.

A trip from Playa del Carmen to Coba will take around 1.5-2 hours.

Cozumel  is just off the coast from Playa Del Carmen and a short ferry ride . The island is about 10 mile wide and 29 miles long and features amazing beaches and even better diving. Some prefer staying on the island for vacation and other prefer visiting for a day or two. Whichever you choose, here are some things that make Cozumel unique and things you should try when visiting the island.

Diving and Snorkeling in Cozumel

One of the best things to do on Cozumel is actually not on land but in the water. Explore the Mesoamerica Reef by diving it or snorkeling. It is the largest reef in the Western hemisphere. Cozumel was a sleepy little fishing community until 1961, when a Frenchman by the name of Jacques Cousteau declared Cozumel one of the most beautiful scuba diving areas of the world. Since that time Cozumel has become an underwater marine park. You will be able to see over 250 species of tropical fish, sea turtles and other amazing sea life. There is a reason this is one of the World’s best dive places. There are 19 reefs to dive and on a clear day you can see 200 ft.

Tip: Booking diving tours is easy to do on the mainland but you can book directly with the dive shops in Cozumel and save money. The one advantage if you book on the mainland is that you can book and make sure there is availability for the following day and getting the schedule.  If you just show up in Cozumel, you might miss a tour or not be able to find one that has space for you.

If you want to do some snorkeling and take a tour , here is one we recommend you check out. This tour will pick you up at your hotel on the mainland in the Rivera Maya and take you to the Cozumel Ferry. All transportation is included. You get to snorkel and use a waterpark on Cozumel. Lunch buffet is included, and you get some time to walk about the downtown of San Miguel, Cozumel to do some shopping.

Sightseeing and activities in Cozumel

Don’t want to get your feet wet but want to see the underwater world? Atlantis submarines run each day giving people tours and a window to see the beautiful marine life. Don’t want to go that deep? You can also try a glass bottom boat to peer down into the sea.

Cozumel also has a Mayan past. One site is San Gervasio, located in the center of the island just off the East West transverse road. Dating back to around 100 B.C., San Gervasio is the largest of the remaining ruins on Cozumel. It existed until Spanish conquistadors arrived on the island in the 16th century, the San Gervasio ruins served as an important religious destination for Mayan women. Originally built as a temple to the Mayan goddess, Ixchel, the governing deity of fertility, San Gervasio served as a pilgrimage site for Mayan women who sought Ixchel’s blessings for family prosperity. Another site is El Cedral.  This is Cozumel’s smallest Mayan ruin. It sits just off the main road that travels along the southwest side. Easily accessible, El Cedral is a current-day farming community that takes pride in being the first Mayan settlement on the island. Neither site is extensive or heavily restored but give you a glimpse into the past. Like other archeological sites, bring sun protection and water with you when going.

Events in Cozumel

Some noted events on the island are the Ironman sports competition, Cozumel Airshow, and Carnival. For all these events the island really goes all out, and it is a good time to go visit from the mainland.

Renting a car on Cozumel

One of the most popular ways to see the island is renting a car and driving the loop (the road that hugs the coast around the southern end of the island). It is very easy to drive on Cozumel since there are so few roads. The loop will only take a few hours with stops. Having the freedom of your own car allows you to stop at some of the ruins, beaches along the way or a great fish taco stand. On the Caribbean facing side of the island the road goes past remote beaches that are stunning. It will be photo op after photo op. Make sure to have your camera.

Tip: You get what you pay for in a rental car. Some of the cheaper rental places have very old cars with bad maintenance. There are a lot of specialized vehicles and Cozumel is a great place to drive these fun cars since it is a small island. You should note that most insurance does not cover specialized or modified vehicles. But don’t sweat it, it is a small island and drive safe.

San Miguel Town, Cozumel

The main town on Cozumel is called San Miguel. This is where the ferry is to Playa Del Carmen is, grocery stores, most restaurants and shopping. Most shopping on Cozumel is geared toward the cruise ships that come to dock here. (We have no idea why cruise ships and jewelry stores go hand in hand, but where there are cruise passengers….) Cozumel gets the bulk of all the cruises on this side of the peninsula because it is one of only place, they can dock. That means when ships are in town, there can be crowds of people walking around and parks and tourist attractions are busy. Only a small portion of the town looks like the idyllic Caribbean Island with pastel-colored buildings. So don’t expect to many photos opts and don’t spend all your time in the town.

Tip: Since so many cruises come to this island with foreign staff, there are some great restaurants with international cuisine like Indonesian.

Cozumel Airport

Cozumel has its own airport. (CZM) You can fly directly to Cozumel from many destinations. The airport is very modern, and you can tell it gets an upscale crowd that flies through this airport. It can be an alternative airport for coming to the peninsula. 

Tip : If you book a trip to Mexico with frequent flyer miles, usually you can book a flight into one city and back from another. If Cancun is not available, try booking a reward ticket with Cozumel, either both flights or one using this destination. You can add some time in Cozumel to your vacation or connect with Playa Del Carmen via the ferry.

Ferry to and from Playa Del Carmen

Getting back and forth between Cozumel and Playa Del Carmen is very easy using the ferry. There are three companies that provide services. Mexico Water Jets, Barcos Caribe and Ultramar. They offer alternating times for crossings so if you don’t know when you will be using the ferry, wait to buy your ticket so you can hop on the next departing ferry. The crossing takes about 30-35 minutes. If the waters are rough, the ride can be a little nauseating. They will be prepared with bags for you if it is choppy.
