“ Definitely a must do when visiting North Queensland. The staff were excellent - all very experienced and informative. We were taken to 3 areas of Opal Reef. The staff were extremely tentative...added BONUS of a professional photographer onboard, who photographed us underwater! Monique via Tripadvisor
“ This 1/2 day snorkelling trip from Port Douglas could not have been better! During the 4-hour tour we learnt about the Low Isles, their creation, evolution and history. We went for a 45 minute snorkel when the instructor was able to show us a turtle! Wet suits and snorkel gear were all provided, pre-sanitized. Fellow Traveller via Tripadvisor

Great Barrier Reef Information

Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef system in the world. This reef system in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland in northeast Australia is composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for 2,600 kilometres over an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometres.

Great Barrier Reef Marine Park authority patrols and polices the area for any illegal activity. There are fishing closures during the year to preserve the fish stocks, so check with a local fishing guide for when the reef is closed to fishing. They also provide free maps so you can see where to fish and where not to fish.

This great natural monument has now been named a state icon from the The Queensland National Trust. There are number of boat tours leaving from Port Douglas to The Great Barrier Reef each day, on either a day trip or an extended overnight trip.

These tours cater for diving, snorkelling, fishing, jet skiing or just sitting back on a yacht and sailing the Coral Seas.

Port Douglas even offers helicopter tours over the Great Barrier Reef, landing on your very own private sand quay. You can takeoff from land or you can travel out on the Quicksilver boat to their pontoon on the reef, and fly back to Port Douglas after you have had enough of snorkeling and watching the beautiful colours of the reef fish and the coral.

If you get the chance to go to outer space, look out for The Great Barrier Reef as you can see it from there.

The Great Barrier Reef is the world's biggest single structure made by living organisms.

It is built by billions of tiny organisms, called coral polyps. The Great Barrier Reef supports a wide diversity of life, and was selected as a World Heritage Site in 1981.

Port Douglas Reef Tours - Outer Barrier Reef Pontoon Day Trip

Port Douglas Reef Tours operate 365 days of the year taking visitors to the best outer Barrier Reef site known as the Agincourt Ribbon Reefs for a day of snorkelling and adventure on an interactive floating pontoon.

Considered as the best reef from Port Douglas this part of the Great Barrier Reef is said to be the most pure body of water in the world free of pollution and home to some of the most spectacular snorkelling and scuba diving in the world.

With the crystal clear water you can see the myriad of fish species, colourful and not so colourful corals in all shapes and sizes.

The Quicksilver catamaran is specifically designed to cut thru the waves and offer guests a much smoother transfer out to the activity platform that is permanently anchored on the reef - making this Pontoon Day Tour a popular Port Douglas reef tour!

Once on the pontoon activity platform you can then go off and begin your days adventure that may combine, optional scuba diving, an Ocean Walker Helmet diving experience, a scenic helicopter flight or a snorkel with a Marine Biologist who will teach you all about the reef.

Foating pontoons or activity platforms are great for families with children as they can move around on the platform and they can also snorkel in a safe environment, it's also a popular option for non-swimmers.

A Port Douglas reef tour on a pontoon offers so many activities including a semi-submersible submarine tour, fish feeding displays, plus the underwater observatory located under the platform for viewing the range of tropical fish and marine life.  You can even choose to take a scenic helicopter flight from the pontoon to watch it all from above (to be pre-booked).

For those guests that may have some disabilities this is the perfect reef day tour for you also. For the utimate end to the day imagine flying back to Port Douglas by scenic helicopter over the reef - choose the Cruise/Fly option and for those who do not like boats at all then you can fly out and back by helicopter which offers spectacular views in both directions - choose the Fly/Fly Port Douglas Reef tour option.

Port Douglas Reef Tour - Snorkel & Dive Silversonic

Port Douglas Reef Tour - Snorkel & Dive Outer Great Barrier Reef day tour

Departing   Port Douglas to the Agincourt Ribbons Reefs this Port Douglas Snorkel & Dive tour visits 3 exclusive reef sites in one day offering 5 hours on the reef and an opportunity to experience some of the best snorkelling and dive sites on the Great Barrier Reef.   Experience a day of adventure with a guided snorkel tour plus snorkel briefs at each reef site to ensure you see a variety of coral and marine life on your Great Barrier Reef day tour.

The skipper chooses these 3 locations based on the weather, winds, tides and currents along with the current marine activity specifically the giant Humpback Whales and the inquisitive Dwarf Minke Whales that come to the Great Barrier Reef to calve during the months of July to September.

This Port Douglas reef tour is one of only 7 boats in the world with a permit to swim with the Dwarf Minke Whales so as you can imagine this boat is very much in demand by visitors over these months.

Another special feature of this boat is the smooth control ride system which makes the boat move similar to a hover craft along the water in rougher conditions providing a lot more comfort for guests. There are also hot showers on board and the buttet lunch includes hot & cold food to refuel after the morning in the water.

If you are a certified mad keen scuba diver then this is a boat for you, if you are a snorkeler wanting to see the best the reef has to offer then this day tour is also for you and if you are ready to try an introductory open water dive then this is one place you really want to give it your first go. Certified scuba divers can enjoy up to 3 dives and intro scuba divers can enjoy up to 2 dives. For keen snorkellers and scuba divers make sure to check out the Great Barrier Reef Tour Pas s - this offers 3 different reef tours during a 7 day period!  Offering a great way to experience the Great Barrier Reef in three different ways, plus great savings!

If you are taking your family out the reef we would not recommend taking young children on this reef tour as you do not visit any island or any land during the day. Families may prefer the Pontoon Reef tour , or to Low Isles . For all water activities you enter the ocean from the rear of the boat from the hydraulic deck.

Port Douglas Great Barrier Reef Tours - Poseidon

Port Douglas Reef Tours - The Great Barrier Reef

This much loved Port Douglas reef tour that departs from the marina in Port Douglas on a daily basis taking visitors to snorkel and dive only the best locations on the outer Barrier Reef in and around the Agincourt Ribbon Reef systems.

This Port Douglas reef tour also has a roving permit allowing its skipper to plan the days cruising destinations based on the weather and marine activity as they too have one of the rare swim with whale licences that allows the guests to hop in the water 10 minutes at a time holding onto a rope whilst the Dwarf Minke Whales swim all around you.

The swim with whale’s season occurs in the months of July to September and as they are wild animals the interaction is of course at their discretion and the visitors and boats are not allowed to actively pursue them the whales have to approach you on their terms only.

Visiting 3 snorkelling and scuba diving locations giving the guests the full Great Barrier Reef experience - great for keen snorkellers and scuba divers.  This reef tour is perhaps not the best for families with young children as there is no mooring near land or a pontoon and young children need space and plenty of things to do to keep them occupied and happy.               For keen snorkellers and scuba divers make sure to check out the   Great Barrier Reef Tour Pas s  - this offers 3 different reef tours during a 7 day period!  Offering a great way to experience the Great Barrier Reef in three different ways, plus great savings!

The Great Barrier Reef is an extraordinary natural wonder that captivates millions of visitors from around the world every year. With its massive size, diverse marine life, and breathtaking colors, it's no wonder that it's the only living structure visible from the moon with the naked eye.

The Great Barrier Reef is Big! The Great Barrier Reef is massive, with an area larger than Ireland and Great Britain combined. The Reef isn't just one reef, but thousands of different reefs, some of which are several kilometers long. Each reef is separated by a vast, vivid blue sea, which owes its color to the fact that there are minimal particles floating around in it.

The Diversity of Life The Great Barrier Reef is home to an incredible diversity of marine life, with 1500 different species of fish, 350 different types of coral, 6000 species of crustaceans, 5000 species of mollusks, reptiles, and marine mammals. The colors of the coral and marine creatures are mind-blowing, and each one serves a purpose, such as warning predators or marking cleaning stations.

Seasonal Experiences Visiting the Great Barrier Reef is a unique experience that can vary depending on the season. From October to December, the Reef is in the midst of its reproductive cycle, Coral spawning occurs during this period. From January to May, it's recruitment time when baby creatures born elsewhere invade the reef. From June to September, it's Whale spotting season, when whales come to the Tropics to get a manicure, shedding barnacles and other fouling organisms in the warm waters of Tropical North Queensland.

Visiting the Reef from Port Douglas One of the biggest advantages of visiting the Great Barrier Reef from Port Douglas is the proximity of the outer reefs to shore. There are also coral islands, drop-offs, and drift dive sites to explore. Port Douglas tour operators are highly professional and have an excellent safety record, making it a must-visit destination for both divers and snorkelers.

Best Time Of Year To Visit The Reef

snorkeling on the reef

Port Douglas offers a fantastic getaway throughout the year, thanks to its warm tropical climate and a variety of outdoor activities. The region experiences two distinct seasons: the 'wet' and the 'dry', which are often referred to as the 'green' and the 'dry' due to the lush rainforests that surround the area. Don't be discouraged by the 'green season,' as it has its own unique beauty.

The Green Season | December - April The green season typically begins with the first monsoonal rains in December and lasts until April. During this period, 75 to 90% of the annual rainfall occurs, accompanied by high humidity. Average temperatures range from 24°C to 33°C (75°F to 91°F).

The green season is a dramatic and stunning time when the flora and fauna of the tropical rainforests come alive. The rainfall is vital for the rainforest's existence. This period is particularly exciting for nature lovers and photographers as the tropics are at their most beautiful, with waterfalls flowing abundantly.

Great Barrier Reef tours welcome the gentle winds at this time of year. You are more likely to experience a “glass out conditions” in the green season due to the low winds. Glass out conditions offer optimal visibility and make for ideal snorkelling & diving on the reef. The calm waters allow for clear views of the underwater world, making it easier to spot marine life, admire vibrant corals, and appreciate the reef's beauty in its full glory.

The Dry season | May to November The dry season, from May to November, brings lower humidity, clear skies, and pleasant temperatures both day and night. Average winter temperatures range from 19°C to 24°C (66°F to 75°F). Less chance of rain gives visitors more options when planning a Reef Tour. You might even spot whales during their migration on your way to and from the reef.

This period corresponds to the peak tourist season, attracting visitors seeking a respite from the colder southern states. Families, especially during school holidays, are advised to book tour to the reef in advance as we have up to 50% more visitors during this time of year.

Sandra Saristavros

Rosemarie Jacobi

We had a lovely day out on the cat, Food was good Just poor visibility of the coral and fish , a little disappointing . Would recommend to go to the reef if you really want to snorkel.

Geoffrey Dale

Great crew, looked after everybody extremely well, brilliant day out!

Ryan Turner

I had a great time on the Poseidon. The thing that stood out to me most was the excellent staff. They were incredibly friendly, funny, helpful, knowledgable, and fun to be around. The gear they give you is great, the spots they take you to are beautiful (not too much bleaching), and the food is tasty. I went on a day when the boat was at less than half capacity (only 30-something passengers) so it made for easy communication between crew and passengers along with short food and drink lines. I definitely recommend the Poseidon Cruise.

Maxine Schofield

We had a fab day the 4 grandchildren were just amazed at the experience have not stopped talking about the swim the dive the fish etc
One of the best experiences of my life. The snorkelling was sensational. The small number of people on the boat made this trip very special, we had personal interaction with Steve and Charlotte. The lunch on board was fabulous. Loved the sail home! Good short tour around the island. A very special day!

Bernard Doughty

Need to be active and fit with good swimming to get best from visit by snorkelling. Sub was very good as was underwater view. Buffet was good but a bit rushed. Too much hard sell on trip. Take lycra suit option for water.

Bronwyn Rayner

A great day out despite the rocky waves. Great to have a marine biologist aboard. Lunch was very good. Staff were caring when I threw up!

  • When to visit

With its luxe resorts and dining scene, Port Douglas is the ideal base for exploring pristine rainforests and the Great Barrier Reef.

The laidback tropical town of Port Douglas is the gateway to two UNESCO World Heritage-listed natural wonders, the Great Barrier Reef and the expanses of the Daintree Rainforest. It’s also a popular resort destination in its own right, with the tree-fringed sands of Four Mile Beach stretching down the bay and a leafy, compact town centre lined with hip cafés and bars. Superyachts from around the world berth at Port Douglas’s sheltered marina, where tour boats depart for sightseeing cruises to nearby coral cays and expeditions to spectacular diving spots on the outer reefs.

Aboriginal culture is rich in Port Douglas/Manjal Jalunbuy. The Traditional Owners of the land are the Kukuk Yalangi people, who have been living in harmony with the rainforests of north Queensland for some 50,000 years. Aboriginal experiences are plentiful in Manjal Jalunbuy all year round and offer a unique perspective into the First Nation people’s fascinating, sustainable way of life.

  • Traditional name: Manjal Jalunbuy
  • Indigenous Peoples: Kukuk Yalangi people
  • Traditional lands: Yirrganydji
  • Traditional languages: Guugu Yalandji (Kuku-Yalanji)

Port Douglas is an easy one-hour drive along the coastal highway from Cairns, the major transport hub in Tropical North Queensland.

You can visit most local restaurants and shops by foot, and most tour operators will pick you up from your accommodation. If you’re interested in a self-drive day trip, hiring a car is best.

Port Douglas enjoys two distinct tropical seasons. The dry season begins in late autumn, around May, with relatively warm temperatures and lower humidity extending through the winter months and into mid-spring, around October. The summer season of steamy heat and occasional rainstorms begins in November and continues through to mid autumn, in April.

Each destination offers a unique vibe and experiences catering to different preferences and expectations. Let’s dive into these aspects to help you make an informed decision.

Port Douglas vs. Whitsundays Cost of Living

Port douglas cost of living.

Whitsunday Cost of Living

The Whitsundays might not have a specific price tag attached to living there, but it’s hinted they’re a bit pricier.

The Whitsundays aren’t just a dream for the affluent; they’re a haven for every kind of traveller.

Here, the ocean’s freshest catches are transformed into culinary masterpieces, complemented by tropical fruits and vegetables.

Imagine sipping a cocktail as you gaze out over the Whitsunday Islands , your taste buds dancing with delight at the tropics’ flavours.

Every meal celebrates the region’s natural abundance and culinary creativity, from beachside barbecues to fine dining under the stars.

Whether enjoying a leisurely breakfast with views of Four Mile Beach or toasting the sunset at a chic rooftop bar, Port Douglas promises a gastronomic adventure that will impress your taste buds and nourish your soul.

Whitsundays vs Port Douglas Weather

Whitsundays weather.

The Whitsundays are a paradise where the sun reigns supreme, offering a year-round invitation to those who worship its warm embrace.

From May to October, the dry season is a period of blissful clarity, with sunny days and skies as blue as the waters below. This makes it one of the best times to snorkel Whitsunday’s waters.

This is when the islands are most inviting, with gentle breezes and comfortable temperatures, making every activity, from sailing to sunbathing on Whitehaven Beach, a joyous affair.

However, the wet season brings its own magic from November to April, transforming the islands with a vibrant burst of life.

Rainfall comes in swift, dramatic downpours that refresh the air and leave behind a sparkling landscape.

This season offers a quieter, more reflective experience of the Whitsundays. With lush greenery and fewer crowds, you can make a more personal connection with nature.

Port Douglas Weather

Port Douglas mirrors the tropical climate of the Whitsundays but dances to its own rhythm.

The dry season here is a showcase of perfection, with days filled with sunshine and nights cooled by sea breezes. These conditions are ideal for exploring the region’s wonders or simply relaxing on Four Mile Beach.

This season is the peak time for visitors, who are drawn by the promise of idyllic weather and the myriad outdoor adventures on offer.

The arrival of the wet season sees Port Douglas draped in a cloak of humidity and rainfall, a time when the natural world around it bursts into life.

The rainforest thrives, and the air is filled with the scent of renewal.

For those who choose to visit during this time, there’s a unique beauty to be found in the rain-soaked streets and the misty landscapes, offering a different perspective on paradise.

Whitsundays vs. Port Douglas: Island Activities

Whitsundays  island activities.

Adventure in the Whitsundays, with Airlie Beach as its vibrant gateway, is as boundless as the ocean.

Set off from Airlie Beach on a snorkelling expedition to hidden reef spots , sail to secluded islands, or bask in the unparalleled beauty of Whitehaven Beach .

Every day is a new opportunity to connect with nature, whether diving into the deep blue or flying over the heart of the reef.

The Whitsundays offer a world of waterborne adventures that promise to leave you with stories to tell for a lifetime.

This makes the debate of Port Douglas vs. Airlie Beach especially interesting for adventure seekers and nature lovers, as it highlights each location’s unique offerings.

Island Activities in Port Douglas

Port Douglas is your ticket to the extraordinary. It’s a place where the Great Barrier Reef meets the ancient Daintree Rainforest, providing a unique blend of underwater exploration and terrestrial adventures.

You may try the best snorkelling off Port Douglas and dive into the colourful underwater world of the reef, embark on river cruises to observe crocodiles in their natural habitat, or trek through millennia-old rainforests .

For those asking whether the Great Barrier Reef is better than Cairns or Port Douglas, Port Douglas presents a compelling case with its easy access to both the reef and rainforest, offering a holistic nature experience.

Port Douglas vs. Whitsundays Nightlife

Port douglas nightlife.

Port Douglas offers a more subdued nightlife experience, focusing on sophisticated dining and relaxed evenings.

As the twilight hours unfold, this picturesque town lights up with elegant bars, fine dining restaurants, and intimate music venues.

You can enjoy sunset cocktails at beachfront bars, intimate live music sessions, and gourmet meals under the stars here.

The dry season sees a flux of visitors enjoying alfresco dining and cocktails by the marina, creating a bustling yet relaxed atmosphere.

Wet season or not, Port Douglas maintains its charm with quieter, more personal venues where the night can be enjoyed over a glass of wine and good conversation, making every evening a special occasion.

While some may wonder if Port Douglas is overrated, the truth is its unique charm and quieter nightlife appeal to those seeking a more refined experience.

Whitsundays Nightlife

The nightlife here is all about embracing the laid-back island vibe with beach bars, live music, and open-air parties under the stars.

During the dry season, the islands come alive with backpackers and travellers looking to mingle, making every night a potential adventure.

Council CEO taking some down time

Council CEO taking some down time

Today the Douglas Shire Mayor and Councillors accepted the resignation of the Council’s CEO.

Mayor Scomazzon thanked Rachel Brophy for her continued dedication, professionalism and commitment during good times and challenging situations, as she supported elected members, the broader Council team and the community.

“Rachel has achieved many great outcomes for the community, including: construction of the Mossman Splash Park, new bike paths, and new lighting at the Mossman Showgrounds; leading our eco tourism certification and securing the Queensland Symphony Orchestra as the headline act to celebrate Carnivale’s 30th anniversary.”

“Rachel also successfully led Council’s response to ex-TC Jasper which has seen unprecedented damage across the Shire. She worked tirelessly advocating to the State and Federal Government to ensure funding for Douglas’ water security and single-handedly commissioned process engineers from Brisbane and Sydney to work alongside Council staff in the aftermath of the monsoonal rain event.”

“On behalf of Councillors, we wish Rachel the best as she spends time with her family.”

The CEO’s last day with Council will be 9th July.
