Inside Death Cab For Cutie and The Postal Service’s anniversary tour: “It’s been more informative than nostalgic”

Ben Gibbard tells NME about the experience and what’s next for both bands, as the ‘Transatlanticism’ and ‘Give Up’ 20th anniversary tour gears up for a landmark London show at All Points East

Death Cab For Cutie and The Postal Service frontman Ben Gibbard has spoken to NME about the joint 20th anniversary celebrations for ‘Transatlanticism’ and ‘Give Up’ – which hit UK shores this week – as well as the future of both bands.

Playing both seminal albums in full across back-to-back sets, Death Cab and The Postal Service will headline London’s All Points East Festival on Sunday (August 25), alongside dates in Cardiff, Glasgow and mainland Europe . After extensive celebrations across the US, these gigs will mark the conclusion of the highly-anticipated anniversary tour, and the second reunion of The Postal Service, who haven’t released any music since 2003’s ‘Give Up.’

“Once we got going, it was like riding a bike”, exclaimed Gibbard, who told NME how old Postal Service keyboard sounds had to be rebuilt from scratch. “Death Cab being an active band, all that material from ‘Transatlanticism’ has been peppered through our sets for 20 years, but getting the Postal Service machine up and running took a fair amount of work in the front end.”

“I’ve never really had a gauge on what ‘Give Up’ and ‘Transatlanticism’ mean to the greater public, specifically in the UK”, he explained, with All Points East set to mark either band’s biggest ever UK show.

“In 2003, you guys [were] freaking out about The Strokes , The White Stripes , Interpol , Yeah Yeah Yeahs – fucking great bands, right? If you’ve heard [Death Cab’s] music, you know we don’t really slot in with that. We never really found a cultural lane in the UK until the last five to 10 years.”

Read our full interview below, where Gibbard also spoke to NME about the anniversary celebrations, plans for Death Cab’s 11th album and if the tour has changed his stance on a second album from The Postal Service.

NME: Hello Ben. You’ve brought The Postal Service back for a second time, how does it compare to the 2013 reunion?

Ben Gibbard : “This time, it has felt even more pronounced. There are assuredly people who were too young to see the 2013 shows, who are seeing The Postal Service for the very first time. Looking at the audiences – of course, younger people tend to be in the front – there’s some people in the front row singing along, who were 100 per cent not alive when this record came out. The snowballing enthusiasm around these different people who formed a relationship with ‘Give Up’ has made these shows utterly bananas.”

Was there a moment, in or around 2003, where you’d realised you’d made two records that would stand the test of time in ‘Give Up’ and ‘Transatlanticism?’

“I don’t know if there was a point, certainly not that early. ‘Give Up’ was becoming a cultural phenomenon, in the sense that there was no band. There were no shows, interviews or TV appearances – the records were just selling like crazy… without any work on our behalf, other than having made the album. With hindsight, I think it was definitely a function of the early internet, word-of-mouth buzz. This cultural shift was happening, where indie rock was going from people’s secret music to a more mainstream style of music. Riding that wave was exciting, and terrifying at times.”

Has the tour impacted the way you feel about either of those albums?

“It’s been really illuminating. It’s making me reassess some of the choices that I’m currently making, musically. Not so much that I want to remake ‘Transatlanticism’, or ‘Give Up’, for that matter. Sometimes, as an artist, you’re moving forward at such [pace] that one can lose sight of what one does best. It’s not so much that I want to recreate the past, I want to make sure that I’m checking in with myself more often, creatively. The best career artists are the ones who know what lane they’re in, and their diversions still bring them back to that path, over the course of an album or a song. It’s been more informative than nostalgic.”

You touched on the organic growth of The Postal Service. In an age where artists are expected to constantly churn out music, what is the beauty, for you, in leaving something untouched for 20 years?

“I’m in a band that has been actively making music for 27 years, and I’m also the partial author of a one-and-done cult record. As a member of Death Cab, I have been living with the critiques that come with being a career artist, where people [ask], ‘Why can’t you make a record like ‘Transatlanticism’ or ‘Plans’ again?’

“Then I also have… let’s call it ‘the Neutral Milk Hotel perspective’ – I know they have a couple of records, but for argument’s sake. You put out this record, it becomes this cultural phenomenon, and you leave people in that place where they can dream on what a follow-up might have sounded like, but there will always be unfulfilled potential. But they have that one record. For me, it’s been really fun to have my cake and eat it too, where I can also be in the messy band [Death Cab]: we made a bad record, but then we made a good record.”

We know you’ve had a firm stance on this matter for two decades, but has the tour inspired a newfound desire to write new music for The Postal Service?

“I think the main reason that a second Postal Service record has never come to fruition – and will never come to fruition – the time commitments that Death Cab ended up taking, which really started with ‘Transatlanticism’, haven’t really ever let up. There’s just not enough time, let alone creative juices flowing, to make a suitable follow-up [to ‘Give Up’]. I think anything that we would attempt to make at this point would be thoroughly disappointing.

“The stakes are just lower [in Death Cab] when you’re putting an album out every two to three years. If people don’t like this one, there’ll be another one later. But after 20 years, there is no way we could ever follow that up in a way that would be satisfying to people. I would rather have all my focus on Death Cab than be watering both projects down. I just don’t have the capacity to do both. Some might argue I barely have the capacity to do one!”

Speaking of Death Cab, it’s been two years since the acclaimed ‘ Asphalt Meadows ‘. Have you turned your attention to album 11 yet?

“The band has been writing intermittently, over the last couple of years. I can’t — nor would I – give you a release date for a new record, but I think we’re going to take time off from touring and being in the limelight. We have asked our fans for a lot over the last two years. Speaking merely strategically, it is very much in our best interest to get the fuck out of people’s faces! We’re from an era where artists went away for a while, into the woodshed…”

How are you feeling ahead of All Points East – your biggest ever show in the UK?

“I’m cautiously optimistic. There are some old homies of ours [on the line-up ] — The Decemberists , Sleater-Kinney . That’s a lot of Americans showing up in London, we’ll see how this goes…

“There’s obviously a long-utilised playbook of a US band going over to the UK before their first record comes out, and starting to develop that buzz. We never did that, we didn’t play a show in London until our third album. By that point, we might as well have been 75 years old compared to the speed at which things move through the culture there! Although, we’ve certainly been embraced by people in the UK. I’m not going to play the underdog card.”

Formed in Bellingham, WA in 1997, Death Cab for Cutie immediately entered the ranks of the era’s most definitive bands, thanks in large part to the remarkable power of co-founder, vocalist, guitarist, and lead songwriter Ben Gibbard’s complex, often bittersweet songcraft. The band made their worldwide popular breakthrough with 2003’s RIAA gold certified Transatlanticism , later named by NPR as one of “ The Decade’s 50 Most Important Recordings .” Fueled by critical acclaim, an array of high profile soundtrack placements, and such hit singles as “The Sound of Settling” and “Title and Registration,” the album debuted among the upper half of the Billboard 200 – Death Cab for Cutie’s first ever entry on the overall chart. A 10th anniversary edition of Transatlanticism containing previously unheard demos and outtakes arrived in 2013, prompting NPR to write, “ For all its ubiquity and imitators, Transatlanticism holds up as an exquisitely produced, largely flawless record in which every song is bound to serve as someone’s favorite. ”

2003 also saw Gibbard and Los Angeles, CA-based multi-instrumentalist Jimmy Tamborello (Dntel, Figurine) unite as The Postal Service, a long distance collaboration named for their working method of exchanging tracks via the US Mail. The duo – joined by a number of friends including singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis – proved a phenomenon with the February 2003 release of their one and only studio LP, Give Up , earning worldwide applause and eventual RIAA platinum certification thanks to infectious electro-pop smashes like “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight” (a top 3 sensation on Billboard ’s “Hot Dance Singles” chart), “We Will Become Silhouettes (which reached the top 3 on the Canadian Singles Chart), and of course, the magical RIAA gold certified “Such Great Heights.” The album’s stature continued to grow in the years following its original release, ultimately spending 19 non-consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s “Top Electronic Albums” chart. In 2013, The Postal Service reunited to mark the 10th anniversary of Give Up with their biggest headline tour ever, along with top-billed performances at such international festivals as Coachella, Primavera Sound, Lollapalooza, and Sasquatch. In addition, a commemorative 10th anniversary edition of Give Up saw the singular collection expanded with 15 bonus tracks, including two brand new songs, “A Tattered Line of String” and “Turn Around.”

Death Cab for Cutie

Death Cab for Cutie has made an enduring mark on the indie pop scene and helped to define the emo genre of the early 2000s. Gibbard’s emotive, introspective lyricism helped shape a generation, and with multiple GRAMMY and MTV nominations, he remains a consistent influence for many indie fans and bands.

Having released a remarkable 10 studio albums, the group are a staggering force with breadth on their side. Their latest album Asphalt Meadows was released last year to critical acclaim, with SPIN Magazine calling it “ Their best album in years.” Gibbard can still unlock that creative sensitivity that spread across many of their earlier albums, and this is proven in this latest record.

The Postal Service

The Postal Service will be returning to London for the first time in a decade, 10 years on from their last anniversary tour. Consisting of singer Ben Gibbard, producer Jimmy Tamborello of Dntel, and backing singer Jenny Lewis, Give Up achieved platinum status in 2003, and has since garnered a cult following.

Tamborello and Gibbard first worked together in 2001 on Tamborello’s Dntel project. From there, the duo continued to collaborate via mail – where they got their name – with Tamborello sending instrumental tracks and Gibbard adding guitars, vocals and lyrics. The results were packaged into the group’s only album, Give Up on the Sub Pop label.

The project was a cornerstone of both musicians’ enduring success, and it is for this reason that its legacy lives on 20 years later. It’s an honour to have both groups for this very unique and special performance at Uber One presents All Points East next summer.

The Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie join previously announced headliners Loyle Carner (17 August) and LCD Soundsystem (23 August) for Uber One presents All Points East. More acts to be announced.

For more information or to buy tickets, head to the Uber One presents All Points East website .

Customisations for a Hurtigruten post boat voyage

The best thing about Hurtigruten postal ferry cruises in Norway is the hop-on, hop-off style of travel. You can opt to embark and disembark at ports other than Bergen or Kirkenes, so you can enjoy a shorter cruise in addition to travel by car or train.

A most popular addition to Hurtigruten cruises in Norway is the Norway in a Nutshell® train journey , which connects Oslo to Bergen via the Flåm Railway. Give yourself at least 8 days in Norway if you wish to enjoy a train-cruise combo trip. We can also customise any itinerary to include trips to neighbouring Scandinavian countries.

Hurtigruten is much-loved for its heritage, but it’s also possible to travel the same route on a modern Havila ship. Ask your travel consultant about exploring Norway on a Havila voyage .

— COASTAL VOYAGES

Quick facts about hurtigruten.

  • Hurtigruten was founded in 1893 to transport cargo, mail and passengers between coastal towns
  • In the old days, Norway’s fjords made road travel difficult and sometimes dangerous
  • Hurtigruten means “fast route” in Norwegian
  • Today the cruise line is considered a leader in the “slow travel” movement

Well planned tour

The tour was well planned. Travel was easy. Hotels in perfect locations. Even when there was a problem, the emergency number led to an easy resolution. 5/5 trip. Exceeded my expectations!

Enjoyed the experience

The Northern lights adventure was successful. Our guide made every effort to help us se them. Our guides on the snowmobile tour were helpful and fun. Food was great. My grandson misplaced his cell phone and everyone helped look for it. We enjoyed the whole experience.

The tour was EXCELLENT! The sign up was EASY! When a train derailment changed our travel plans over the Easter holiday weekend someone at the office answered the phone and helped us. This was THE BEST tour we have ever taken and highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.

Amazing experience

We really didn't know what to expect, only booking a trip to Norway because of a wedding in Denmark the following week. It was an amazing experience. Everything worked well. Accomodations were clean, comfortable and cultural at the same time. When we hit a snag along the way, our consultant was available by phone. We'd recommend this trip, and Nordic Visitor, to others.

An amazing trip!

Ellen, our travel consultant, helped me plan the perfect trip to Norway! The hotel was nice and had free breakfast that was delicious! Camp Tamok was awesome and the dog sledding and snowmobiling was so much fun. There was a little hiccup when the catamaran tour changed to another boat and we didn't know, but I called the emergency line and was helped right away. The northern lights chase was awesome and we finally got to see the lights on the last night. It was an amazing trip!

What an experience!

WOW, WOW, WOW!! What a trip, what an experience. Everything was perfect and so accurate! From planing to the end of the trip everything was on time, and we really enjoy everything. The hotels, trains, buses, boat! Visiting Norway is a dream! The cities, people, everything!

Highly recommend

Ellen was amazing throughout the booking process and answering all my questions. The trip was incredible. I could do more than what I wanted and I could taylor it to meet my needs. I will highly recommend you see Norway with Nordic Visitor's help.

Super well planned

Recently took one of the tours including Norway in a Nutshell that included an ambitious amount of travel - on trains, boats, buses, airplanes - 6 different cities/hotels (including on the Hurtigruten Coastal Express) - and everywhere we went we were expected and welcomed. The materials Ellen sent ahead of time helped us be prepared and make the most of our trip. Super well planned - wouldn't hesitate to use Nordic Visitor services for another trip.

Exactly what we wanted

Easy instructions. It was exactly what we wanted. Very easy to navigate. Our travel consultant was responsive and helpful. We had one complication which was solved right away. I would recommend highly.

Everything was seamless

I travel quite often but this was my first time using a travel consultant. Annie responded quickly to all my questions and worked with me to make several changes to the suggested itinerary. Everything was seamless and there were no issues in the planning or while on the trip. There was an unforeseen delay on a train and the agency called us to let us know the updated timetables and advice on how to proceed since we would be missing our original connection. My mom and I had a wonderful time on the trip. I would highly recommend Nordic Visitor, it is definitely worth your while.

Memorable trip

Our travel consultant, Juliana was great and ensured we were able to do the activities we had selected and also answered all our questions, helped with reservations etc. our biggest concern was managing the logistics and making every train, bus, cruise, flight etc but although tiring it all worked out really well. we chose the luxury accomodation and were not disappointed, even the glamping tent was great. What made the trip memorable was the activities, and all were high quality, well run and very professional.

Norway is beautiful

It's a great experience to use the consultant, hassle free. My travel consultant, Elini has been very helpful and responsive. The hotel we stayed are all very near to the train station. Norway is beautiful with the great nature.

Politics latest: Chancellor Rachel Reeves to face down winter fuel rebels at parliamentary meeting - as a peer aims to kill cut in Lords

Chancellor Rachel Reeves will address the parliamentary Labour Party this evening in a behind-closed-doors meeting where rebels will challenge the winter fuel payment cut ahead of a Commons vote on Tuesday. Peers are set to vote on a motion to kill the cut on Wednesday.

Sky chief political correspondent Jon Craig is in Brighton for the Trades Union Congress.

This summit brings together the leaders from the union movement to discuss and vote on their policy positions.

With a Labour government in power, the conference also gets a visit from the prime minister - with Sir Keir to speak tomorrow.

But as Jon says, it's "boxing gloves on" at the TUC over the winter fuel payment cut.

Paul Nowak, the TUC general secretary, has told Jon that he favours an increase to capital gains tax to fill the "black hole" Labour claims to have found in the public finances.

Sharon Graham, the general secretary of Unite, laid out her support for a wealth tax to Jon.

And Mick Lynch, the chief of the RMT union, has told Jon he wants something "radical" from the government.

"The winter fuel allowance really has - I wouldn't say set this conference alight - but it's certainly boiling up to a pretty high temperature," Jon says.

Mr Nowak is speaking later today - and one of his teams has told Jon the speech will be "punchy".

"So boxing gloves on," Jon says.

As well as the winter fuel cuts, wages and workers' rights are also topics the TUC will discuss.

By Alix Culbertson , political reporter

Prisoners set to be released early tomorrow have been trawled through in an attempt to not let domestic abusers go, the policing minister said.

Tuesday will see about 1,700 prisoners released early in an attempt to alleviate overcrowded prisons in England and Wales.

The government said serious violent criminals, terrorists and domestic abuse perpetrators will not be released as part of the scheme.

However, the domestic abuse commissioner Nicole Jacobs told The Times victims of domestic abuse are having "sleepless nights" over the release as they fear those who have been convicted of crimes such as common assault towards a partner will not be flagged as domestic abusers.

Policing minister Dame Diana Johnson said the government has been trying to ensure that does not happen.

She told Sky News: "There's been a real trawl through to try and identify where their primary offence isn't domestic abuse, we know there's a history and that's where the steps have been put in to protect as best we can.

"Because we know, unfortunately, domestic abuse is so prevalent amongst the offending community."

Actor Idris Elba has entered Downing Street ahead of a meeting with the prime minister.

The Luther star is in Number 10 for the launch of a new anti-knife crime coalition - in what is set to be the first annual summit on the topic.

As an anti-knife crime campaigner, Elba will help bring together community groups and victims' families who have first-hand experience that can be used to change policy.

With the help of the coalition, which will include his Elba Hope Foundation, the government hopes to halve knife crime over the next 10 years.

It is currently in the process of banning ninja swords and strengthening the law on online knife sales.

Dame Diana Johnson, the Home Office minister, is speaking to Sky News this morning.

She was asked about the government's plans to cut the winter fuel payment for millions of pensioners.

Dame Diana says it is a "really tough decision", that "nobody wants to make".

She repeats the government's stance that they have to make the choice because of the "economic inheritance" from the last government.

The frontbencher says she will support the motion in the Commons vote tomorrow.

Dame Diana says: "I think in government, one of the things you have to do is make tough decisions.

"And unfortunately, this is one of the first ones that we're having to deal with.

"But we know that we are also committed to the triple lock on pensions, and we've got the budget coming up in October.

"So I think all the options are being looked at by government as to how to make sure the poorest and most vulnerable do not suffer."

The minister adds that her inbox is "full of emails" about the policy - but it's a decision necessary to "get the finances back on track".

Sky News' deputy political editor Sam Coates and Politico's Jack Blanchard are back with their daily guide to the day ahead in politics in under 20 minutes.

Today, they explain the government's messaging ahead of Tuesday's controversial vote on scrapping winter fuel allowance for most pensioners.

It's also the TUC Congress in Brighton this week – Jack and Sam explain what to look out for from the union and why the event matters even more this year.

With a vote in the House of Commons on Tuesday over the government's plan to cut the winter fuel payment, it is likely that some Labour MPs will not vote with the government.

Rachael Maskell, the Labour MP for York Central, has led the charge from the backbenches against the government plans.

There are reports that as many as 50 Labour MPs could rebel - although a number such is this is always hard to pin down and should be taken with a pinch of salt.

But on a motion like this, a rebellion might not see MPs actually voting against the government.

Instead, those who want to register their displeasure with the plans may simply not show up or abstain from the vote.

It should be noted, even if Labour loses 50 votes to abstention - and even if the 50 vote against the government - they still have the majority to pass their plans.

But the consequences of voting against the government would be much more severe.

Sir Keir Starmer - and his chief whip, Sir Alan Campbell - showed they are willing to be ruthless with those voting against the government in King's Speech.

Seven MPs, including veteran John McDonnell, had the whip suspended after backing calls to scrap the two-child benefit cap - read about that here .

At the time, a Labour source told Sky News this decision was made to "show that we expect Labour MPs to support the programme we were elected on".

It remains to be seen how the rebellion on Tuesday will take shape, and whether Sir Keir will have to continue his ruthless approach to his backbenches.

All the prime minister would say on Sunday was that it was a "a matter for the chief whip".

In the same way that Labour bosses divided the party's time in opposition into distinct sections - change the party, attack the Tories, advance the solutions - the first phase of the Starmer government is becoming increasingly clear to see.

As with the economy and prisons before the summer break, this week will see ministers set out the scale of the crisis in the NHS in the starkest and most eye-catching terms, before once again pointing the finger of blame firmly at the previous Conservative administration.

Much like the accusations that "the Tories broke the economy" and "the Tories broke the prison system", the charge that "the Tories broke the NHS" captures much to be believed while also being a somewhat simplistic and very political message.

Labour is building itself a battering ram of blame which it will use to force through a series of unpopular and controversial policies that were not in the party's manifesto.

The cuts to winter fuel allowance are one of these measures.

Labour's post-election honeymoon looks to be over as it faces pressure this week over winter fuel payments, releasing prisoners early, and the state of the NHS.

Two months after winning a historic majority, Sir Keir Starmer and his ministers have a busy week as they face pressure not just from other parties, but their own MPs.

A vote on winter fuel payments, the prime minister speaking at the TUC conference, prisoners being released early, the publication of a report into the NHS and Sir Keir's trip to the US are all on the cards this week.

Monday will see Chancellor Rachel Reeves addressing Labour MPs at a Parliamentary Labour Party meeting, where she is expected to face concerns about removing the winter fuel payment from 10 million pensioners.

MPs will vote on Tuesday on whether to limit the winter fuel payment to those on pension credit, after the government announced its intention at the end of July.

Labour MPs will be told they must vote with the government, however several, particularly on the left of the party, have voiced their opposition to the cut.

It is understood they may abstain instead of voting against the government, after Sir Keir set a clear precedent by suspending seven MPs from Labour after they rebelled over the decision to keep the two-child benefit cap.

Sir Keir would not say if he would again suspend MPs for voting against the government, telling the BBC on Sunday: "That will be a matter for the chief whip."

Labour has defended the concept of new "respect orders" for fighting anti-social behaviour - but admitted the details are still unclear.

In its manifesto, the party said it would give powers to "ban persistent adult offenders from town centres, which will stamp out issues such as public drinking and drug use".

The Blair government previously spearheaded ASBOs - anti-social behaviour orders - now regarded by many as a failure.

Half were breached, two-thirds were breached more than once, and Labour never reached its target on reducing re-offending. They were scrapped in 2014.

Respect orders appear to have a very similar remit to ASBOs - and policing minister Dame Diana Johnson told Sky News the process of how they will work is still being developed.

She instead restated the general ambition of the new scheme.

"[They] will be about preventing those prolific offenders who are causing anti-social behaviour in our communities up and down the land from going into areas like town centres, or other public spaces like parks," she said.

By Jon Craig , chief political correspondent, at the Trades Union Congress

Firebrand union leader Sharon Graham has told Sky News that Chancellor Rachel Reeves is guilty of "picking the pockets of pensioners" by cutting winter fuel payments.

The leader of the Unite union was speaking on the opening day of the TUC conference in Brighton, where she spearheaded demands for a wealth tax on millionaires to fund restoring the winter cash for pensioners.

"Britain is in crisis, and we need to make very, very different choices," said Ms Graham.

"We're calling on Labour not to pick the pockets of pensioners, but to have a wealth tax on the biggest and richest 1% in society."

She said her proposal would create £25bn, more than enough to fill the £22bn "black hole" blamed by the chancellor and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for the cuts.
