PHEV.... radar cruise control temporarily unavailable WTH.

So, 20 minutes into what turned out to be a 6.5 hour drive (normally 3.5) I'm in adaptive cruise and the car steams ahead towards the car clearly in front and no more than 10m away. I slammed on. Message comes up on the HUD saying warning check the dash. On the dash is the message about radar cruise being temporarily unavailable.  So I cleared the message pressing the back arrow button. 3 sec later the message is back. It takes up all of the drivers display. Ad infinitum.  Basically, not only am I now driving 6.5 hours without cruise but the drivers display (MID) is unusable.

Light snow fall but nothing that should upset the radar.

Ended up pulling into a services after a few hours for a break. All working again. Switch off and on.

Anyone seen anything like this?

Unrelated, but are the wing mirrors heated? Mine seemed like they were full of condensation fog and barely usable. All blurred. Tried various air con settings to no effect.

Thanks each

Door mirrors are heated - switched on with the rear screen heater / defogger ...

Thanks

Nick, I was just going to post the same experience that you’ve had. This was on the M1 travelling north on Saturday into the storm. I first got a warning the the collision avoidance system was not operating, message taking up the MID space used the return/back key to eliminate the message. Then got a ACC message saying it was unavailable and like you cleared using the return button. Message pops up again, repeat and repeat, I finally got it cleared to see the MID by turning on the the ACC then immediately turned it off, no message well at least for some time. It was a pain and whilst I understand the need to warn the driver I don’t think it should blank out the whole display.

There was snow build up on the radar head so understand the reason it blanked out and I think it will always struggle in those cold intensely wet/snowy conditions. The previous Subaru had the twin HD camera systems which could switch off but never like this I was a bit disappointed at the lost of a major safety system and wonder why there does not appear to be some form of heater to keep the radar head clear.

The wing mirrors clear when the rear heated windows switch is operated, this has been the case for a few of my previous cars.

Does it not also need to front camera (as well as the radar) in order to detect lane markings and know which lane the car in front is in? I can imagine visibility becoming an issue in snow sooner than the radar ...

I guess that you might have been able to switch to classic cruise control  had you wanted to ... ?

The lane guidance is definitely the camera but I think the collision avoidance and ACC is down to the radar system but that switches off and on all the time if the markings are missing or the sun is blanking the camera etc., it gives you a warning the waits until the situation has cleared and then automatically switches back on. This is the same as your car I guess? I didn’t try standard CC I was happier being in control and monitoring the situation myself, it’s just good to have the safety systems in place and operational as sometimes they can help respond if the unforeseen happens.

As an aside the Subaru system is able to differentiate between trucks, cars, bikes and humans so has algorithms that take the likely behave to count built into the systems. I think the current systems is even better than the one I had in my previous XV.  Each system has its benefits and drawbacks but in the end it’s the ‘nut behind the wheel’ that matters.

Did I read somewhere that the radar head is behind the Toyota Badge on the front?

If so, perhaps a future feature ought to have some trace heating to keep it snow and ice free. It is quite a large snow catcher. Maybe keeping it well polished or something like rainX might help to stop snow and ice adhering to it?

Possibly when you stopped @Nick72 the collected snow fell off?

Yes, that’s the location but based on my experience I can not see that it’s heated as mine had collected a good mat of snow as had the gap around the front of the bonnet area and below the number plate.

My previous Kodiaq had the same problem with ice/snow building up and stopping the front radar working - but at least the (non-digital) instrument display was still usable. This seems a very silly, and dangerous design by Toyota. Surprised I didn't read about this in the many US reviews of the "prime" - many of whom seemed to drive in cold/snowy conditions regularly - I wonder if they have a heater in those markets?

Interesting to find out if they have heater I’d certainly try to have one fitted if it was practical but I’d think the radar head would be one design across the range. Maybe in the states they have not taken to using the ACC controls I have friends who would not know how to turn it on if their lives depended on it.

Looks like BMW, Audi, MB and Tesla Model Y have heaters (and obviously a well known limitation of the technology). It suggests it's possible so would be interesting if Toyota came up with a retrofit or anyone comes up with a DIY option.

So far I haven't experienced the issue but if it only happens occasionally in very poor conditions, I'd probably want to have full control anyway. If it happens every time there's a heavy frost then something I'd consider.

I also found this today

There are some tips you will want to keep in mind when utilizing DRCC. There are five conditions in which this system will not operate. The first is when visibility in the front of the vehicle is poor due to bad weather. Next, if there is something on the sensor—such as mud, ice, or bugs—the system will not work. If you are driving on a curved road where the turn length is narrow, the system will turn off. If the leading vehicle is pulling an empty trailer, has a narrow rear surface area, or is a motorcycle, the system will not work. It is important to keep these things in mind as you drive and utilize DRCC.

Both my Nissan Pulsar and Toyota C-HR had the same issue when the radar sensor became obstructed by snow / mud.

I must admit that I'm not a fan of the automatic cruise control, I usually just use the constant speed function, but then again only very rarely drive on motorways.

Aww you should try it, it's great! Although you do have to pay almost as much attention as you do with normal cruise control as the system drives like a learner and doesn't handle big changes by the car in front (e.g. If they brake firmly mine slams on the anchors  even harder with several car lengths clearance, instead of braking firmly and progressively and using up that buffer of space, and if the car ahead shoots off it'll pause for a sec then do the same! I've learned to just turn it off in such situations and go back to my normal constant speed with a buffer gap style so I don't keep accelerating and braking like the person in front)

I can see this car is not going to be a good winter car for me tho' - Doesn't warm up unless I'm going fast, and now I have the joy of it warning me that there might be ice - The warning wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't plastered over the HUD and MFD, blocking actually useful information!

I wish it was like notifications, where you could tell it to not show some of them, or at least just show it once and not keep doing it randomly!

Ah didn't know that. Just assumed they were piped with warm air from the air con. Great tip. Thanks.

Thanks Ernie. Two annoying issues then. The lack of resilience in the cruise control. It's a radar. Light snow in my case. No build up discernible when I parked up at the services. My Merc several years ago had ACC which seemed bullet proof. Heavy rain, snow, you name it. Still worked without ever an issue.

But the fact that the stupid message effectively eliminates use of the MID for the rest of the drive is something that I hope Toyota can fix even if they can't sort the temperamental radar. Can't exactly stop the car and restart it on the motorway. ACC all just worked fine just now. Drive back from SW London. 5hrs. Chucking it down. All worked. Strange how light snow made it go crazy.

Adaptive cruise should be moded off the radar only.

It was too light a snow and the air temperature was 4C so I doubt anything had built up. No sign of anything on the car when I stopped it. Bizarre.

But all fine just now in the drive back.

When it went wrong it was headed hard over to run into the back of the car in front. Error message only came up just after I hit the brakes hard. Road was clear, no snow. It was snowing lightly but nothing of significance.

radar cruise control not working

This is my first vehicle with RCCC. I noticed on a trip over the past two days that if someone merges in front of me or if I'm in a turn and a car is slightly ahead of in the adjacent lane, that the system executes a pretty aggressive slow-down on the 4Runner. My question is, when this happens, do my brake lights come on? The reason I ask is that the action is very much like me hitting the brakes pretty darned hard, and if I was behind me, I would want to see brake lights when that happens. Any one able to confirm if they DO or DON'T activate when this happens? If the do not, I can foresee some issues down the road.

If the truck applies the brakes, yes. If it uses engine compression by downshifting no. From what you said, sounds like it applies the brakes. Also, the behavior you’re describing is what happens when a heavy, primitive vehicle is given new technology it was never designed for.

Something else with this system I wasnt aware of until i got to that part of the manual is the distance the radar reads and adjusts your speed is adjustable—- basically car lengths. The default is what seems like a football field length which is so far it invites people to cut in front of you. to answer your question though- yeah if the vehicle auto brakes the brake lights also auto illuminate…

We have this on our Rav4 Prime, and I can say it acts the same way, annoys me, but helps keep the speedo in a reasonable place.

yeah i find that it can be too aggressive at times...ive had similar tech in Audi and BMW vehicles that was more "intelligent" and less aggressive unless it really deemed the need to in case of crash at high speeds etc... at the end of the day it is nice to have on the 4runner and definitely appreciate it on long highway drives where i don't always have to tap the brakes or cancel the cruise control constantly ..

You can also turn it off and use normal cruise control if you like. Just push and hold the cruise control ON button until message that the radar is turned off shows up on information display.

So, depress the button on the stick until I get a dash display?

When the radar cruise slows you down, does it resume speed automatically when the distance to the vehicle in front of you increases? No such newfangledness on my 4R, so I'm just curious...

Yeah hammers it no doubt. Very little tolerance for deviation above or below set speed. So a big part of my daily drive to work is a nearly flat stretch about 30 miles long with no stoplights. 1/2 is 60mph and 1/2 is 55mph. Ive been experiment using cruise and driving manually. I’m finding cruise is about 2mpg worse than driving manually. Anybody else see this with using cruise?

Ditto. I don't think cruise increases gas mileage if your normal manual driving technique isn't weird. In fact, I'm not surprised that it reduces it. I would like to see a controlled test of using Radar Cruise, vs Non-Radar Cruise, vs Manual and see if there's a difference between the 3. One other point... I was driving in Northern NJ the other day during a snowstorm, and got a dash-light and message saying that my collision avoidance system was unable to work due to the "sensor needs cleaning". During this, I also could not engage Cruise control at all. I pulled over and found a layer of snow-slush-salt on my sensor on the grille. Wiped it off and the fault cleared. I wish I had known about holding the button down to use "normal" cruise... to see it it would bypass the fault.

5 Reasons Why Your Cruise Control Stopped Working

Magnus Sellén

  • Updated: March 15, 2023

Cruise Control Not Working

It would be difficult to find a vehicle on the road today without cruise control. This invaluable feature makes driving long distances easier but can also cause trouble when it malfunctions. Understanding the reasons your cruise control stopped working ensures that you can get the problem fixed quickly for a more enjoyable ride.

While this fault can cause issues with the cruise control system itself, there could also be an effect on the acceleration of your vehicle. That’s why you want to have it looked at as soon as you notice a problem. Let’s take a quick look at the reasons your cruise control may have stopped working.

Reasons Why Your Cruise Control Stopped Working

The most common reason a cruise control stops working is due to a blown fuse or a defective brake pedal switch . It can also be caused by issues with the throttle control system or the ABS. In older cruise control systems, it can be caused by a broken vacuum line.

Here is a more detailed list of the possible reasons your cruise control is not working:

1. Blown Fuse

broken fuse

All electrical systems in the vehicle are controlled by fuses. Your cruise control system is attached to a fuse that can blow if there is a short circuit or fault. Without a good fuse, the cruise control system can’t work at all.

Thankfully, it’s not difficult to find and replace a blown fuse. Look in the owner’s manual to find the fuse that corresponds with the cruise control technology.

2. Defective Brake Pedal Switch

push brake pedal

The brake pedal switch is responsible for turning the brake lights on and off based on the pedal position. Cruise control systems are designed to disengage whenever your brake pedal gets pressed.

Because the cruise control is wired into the brake pedal switch, any fault can cause it to stop working. When the brake pedal switch malfunctions, the car believes the brakes are engaged, causing the system to turn off automatically. Not only that, but your car’s brake light might also be stuck on, leaving confused drivers in your wake.

3. Malfunctioning Speed Sensor

abs sensor close

Speed sensors are located on every wheel or differential. The purpose of these sensors is to monitor the speed of the wheels to determine if traction control is needed.

The speed sensors are also part of the cruise control system. When a sensor fails, the cruise control can stop working and the speedometer might act strange as well.

If there is an issue with a speed sensor, it will often show with an ABS warning light or a check engine light on the dashboard.

RELATED: 3 Symptoms of a Bad ABS Wheel Speed Sensor

4. Electrical Issues

cruise control buttons

The cruise control system is electronic, with many components working together to make the system operate. If the cruise control fails to work, you want to check the wiring harness and associated connectors for a fault.

You also need to ensure that the voltage source is supplying enough power to the system. Even the smallest fault can cause defects with the cruise control. In many cases, there can be an issue with the cruise control lever or buttons causing the cruise control to not engage.

If your cruise control buttons are located on the steering wheel it could also be caused by a bad clock spring, which is located behind the steering wheel.

Check the system with an OBD2 scanner to look for any trouble codes related to the cruise control.

RELATED: 5 Symptoms of a Broken Clock Spring, Location & Replacement Cost

5. Damaged Vacuum Actuator, Hoses or Cable (Older cruise control)

If you drive an older vehicle with cruise control, you might have an issue with the vacuum actuator or the cable that connects to the throttle. If there has been damage done to the vacuum hoses or the actuator, the cruise control will stop working altogether.

Additionally, the cable linking the actuator to the throttle must be in good shape. If it has been broken, the cruise control will fail.

What is Cruise Control?

Cruise control is a feature that is used when you are traveling at a consistent speed. Cruise control was first introduced for automobiles in the 1950s. However, it took many years before it became a staple in the modern vehicle.

This electrical system allows you to set a predetermined speed and take your foot off of the gas pedal. If you are on a long drive, there is less fatigue because you don’t have to try to maintain your speed. Cruise control can also benefit fuel economy because the vehicle uses less fuel when traveling steadily.

In newer cars, you might be able to find adaptive cruise control , which is a smart technology. Adaptive cruise control allows you to travel at a predetermined speed, but it also helps to maintain a safe distance from the vehicles in front of you with the help of sensors. With conventional cruise control, you need to take over when the car in front of you slows down, but that’s not the case with adaptive cruise control.

There are also vehicles nowadays with not only cruise control, but fully self-driving vehicles . We will most likely see much more of this in the future.

Cruise Control Repair Cost

The cost to repair your cruise control system depends on what caused it to fail. If you need to replace a cruise control or brake switch, you might spend between $125 and $350, including parts and labor. However, the cost to change a fuse is only a few dollars and you can perform the replacement yourself in just a matter of seconds.

On the other hand, when something major fails, such as the actuator, you could be looking at a much higher repair bill. In some vehicles, the cost to replace a cruise control actuator can cost more than $700. These costs rise if you drive a luxury vehicle or one that is difficult to get parts for.

It might not seem immediately important for you to fix the broken cruise control, but this defective system can affect other performance aspects. You could start to notice issues with acceleration or have trouble with the speedometer. To play it safe, it’s always best to have the cruise control repaired as soon as you notice a problem.

Is there a fuse for the cruise control?

Yes. If the cruise control is installed from the factory, you should check your car’s owner’s manual for the fuse location. If it’s an aftermarket cruise control, you’ll need to follow the wires to find the fuse.

Does the brake switch affect the cruise control system?

Yes. The brake switch affects the cruise control system. The brake switch sends a signal to the cruise control system to let it know when the brakes are being applied for the engine to know when it should stop accelerating.

Will the cruise control work if the check engine light is on?

The cruise control function will be disabled when the check engine light is on in most car models, even if the cause of the check engine light is not the cruise control itself. This is mainly due to safety reasons.

Can a vacuum leak affect cruise control?

Older vehicles use vacuum to control the throttle for the cruise control, and in this case a vacuum leak can heavily affect the cruise control. However, modern cruise controls are fully electric and in most cases will not be affected by a vacuum leak if the check engine light is not illuminated.

Although many people may think that the cruise control system is unimportant and not worth spending money to repair, the problem can be caused by a faulty part that will affect the engine’s performance or durability. Therefore, it is best not to ignore the problem if your cruise control is not working without first diagnosing the car properly.

If your cruise control still isn’t working after trying all the tips in this article, it’s probably time to take it in for a professional opinion from a mechanic. It may be a more serious problem that requires replacement parts or repairs. In the meantime, drive safe and enjoy the open road!

Cruise Control Not Working? 9 Potential Causes

Cruise control reduces stress and fatigue on long drives, but if the system isn't working properly, it can become dangerous. If your vehicle's cruise control isn't working, one of the following nine issues may be the root cause.

How Cruise Control Works

Cruise control is a system to maintain vehicle speed without direct driver input. When you want to engage cruise control, you first turn the system “On” with a button or switch. However, this alone does not start the cruise control. When you “Set” cruising speed, the cruise control module (CCM) records the current speed, then takes control of the throttle body to maintain vehicle speed. When vehicle speed increases or decreases (due to wind or hills, for example), the CCM decreases or increases throttle body opening accordingly.

By modulating engine speed, the CCM can maintain your desired cruising speed on the highway. You can increase or decrease cruise speed by tapping a button or lever, and you can cancel cruise control by hitting the “Cancel” or “Off” buttons or stepping on the brake.

Throttle body control has changed over the years. Early systems used a vacuum motor and cable, but these eventually changed over to electric motors. Most recently, with the development of drive-by-wire or electronic throttle control systems (ETCS), cruise control is built into the engine control module (ECM), which controls the throttle body electronically.

Basic cruise control systems still require the driver to pay attention to changing road and traffic conditions. Adaptive cruise control systems, sometimes called "smart" cruise, use radar or laser detection to maintain safe distances from vehicles ahead. Some adaptive cruise control systems merely reduce engine speed to maintain distance, but some of the newest adaptive cruise control systems can also engage the brakes to slow or stop the vehicle. Still, even with adaptive cruise control, it's important that drivers never take their eyes off the road.

Why Is My Cruise Control Not Working?

There are a few basic ways that cruise control can fail, depending on how the system is designed. You may not be able to do much about ETCS cruise control systems, but there are a few things you can check:

Brake Light Switch – As cruise control is automatically cancelled by depressing the brake, some vehicles may disengage cruise control if it cannot detect the brake light switch.

Brake Lights – In some systems, cruise control is disabled when a brake light is blown. Aftermarket lighting, such as LED brake light conversion, might trick the CCM into thinking a brake light is blown, as LED bulbs draw less current than incandescent bulbs.

Fuses and Relays – On some vehicles, fuses and relays are used to protect the cruise control actuator circuit . If the fuse is blown or the relay is faulty, the system won’t work.

Spiral Cable – Many vehicles mount the cruise control switch on the steering wheel. A faulty spiral cable may have an open circuit, preventing the switch from contacting the CCM.

Control Switch – If the internal contacts wear out, the cruise control switch may not be able to contact the CCM. This might disable cruise control completely, or it might not react to the cancel or accelerate functions.

Check Engine Light – On some modern vehicles, particularly those equipped with ETCS, cruise control may be disabled if there is an engine or transmission problem .

Vacuum Leak – Some older vehicles used vacuum actuators to control the throttle body during cruise control operation. If there is a leak, such as a cracked hose or tube, the system won’t work. A vacuum leak might cause the engine to idler higher or set a fuel trim code.

Vehicle Speed Sensor – There are usually multiple vehicle speed sensors (VSS) on any given vehicle. The CCM might use a VSS feed from the ECM, instrument cluster, or transmission. If that signal is lost, the CCM can’t detect vehicle speed, disabling cruise control.

Electrical Problems – As most cruise control systems use electrical or electronic components, any diagnosis should include a thorough check of source voltage, wiring harnesses, and connectors. Anything loose or broken could disable the system entirely.

If your cruise control isn’t working properly, avoid using it until it is repaired. A faulty cruise control system may not cancel on demand, which will create a safety hazard for you and those around you. After assessing your cruise control yourself, take your vehicle to a trusted mechanic for a check or a couple diagnosis and repair.

Problems with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control?

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) is "unavailable". I thought it might be due to recent cold snap, but it's been warmer and still not working. Basically, I turn on cruise, it says "Radar Ready" and then when I actually push to set afford control it says "Cruise Control Not Available" with a yellow exclamation mark. No other errors or warnings of any kind. So I washed the car and inspected the emblem hoping it was dirty (despite not getting the clean sensor message) No visible damage. No warning on the dash about radar, just that cruise is not available. Pictures included. Pre Collision works! Set it as loosely as possible, then approached a couple of cars in the turning lane. Sure enough the "BRAKE" warning flashes on the dash. And I think that system uses the radar? This sure is perplexing. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); It almost feels like a condition in the car is preventing the radar cruise from working. For example, I used to get the EXACT same message in my Lexus LS when I tried to engage DRCC if the traction control switch was in "Snow" setting. Same message, same yellow exclamation mark. Is there a switch or setting in the car that could cause this as is did in my Lexus? Anyone else experience this?

There's a list of possibilities in the manual. I put an arrow on one that seems likely if you turned off VSC or traction control and forgot about it.

Just adding to the guesses here. Since there isn't a message specifically directing you to "contact the dealer" like in the case of an ECU failure, maybe it's just a regular cruise control issue such as a stuck cancel switch on the brake pedal or dissimilar tire sizes causing an ABS fault. Not even sure if my 2021 manual is representative of 2017 issues. I'll see myself out...

Something else you might try before the dealer $$ visit. Try a little careful disassembly down to the radar unit and check the connections. Remove and replace the plug(s) several times. I myself have not investigated this route, and have no idea where the connectors are on the unit. And if there is exposed wiring harness visible from that vantage point, check that also for any signs of "nibbling". Rodents have an affinity for the insulation and other environmentally friendly materials the vehicle is composed of.
It's been bitterly cold and the original Cruise Control Not Available warning is displaying again! I'm half wondering if extreme cold prevents it from working properly? Been -25 for several days here.

Does regular cruise still work? Press and hold the cruise on/off button and it'll go to regular non dynamic cruise. If that works then your problem is probably related to the radar in the emblem. If that doesn't work then your problem is something else.

How long have you owned the car? Has it ever worked in the cold for you? Imho, sounds like a bad/misaligned radar unit, or bent radar support. Imho, you need a "real" scan tool to see the error. Otherwise, you're guessing. Kinda like people with "ABS error - how to fix" questions. Without a scan tool, replace every single component. But, with the radar, ADAS systems, that doesn't work, since radar, ultrasonic, and camera system all require proper alignment. Good Luck!

Doug McC said: ↑ According to my 2022 Owners Manual that is exactly what is happening. Says it very clearly that in extreme cold conditions it will not work (neither will the Auto Mode of the windshield wipers). 7 Reasons Why Cruise Control is Not Working

cruise control not working

Cruise control has been around since the late 1950s. There was a time when you could only find this convenient feature in a few model vehicles. Nowadays, it seems like virtually every model vehicle on the road has a cruise control feature.

Cruise control not engaging seems like a trivial issue, but the inability to activate this convenient feature can certainly dampen any road trip. While cruise control failures “rarely” pose safety risks, determining the root cause is necessary to restore its use. Let’s look at the common causes of cruise control malfunction.

Table of Contents

Cruise Control Problems (Accelerating or Maintaining Speed)

If your cruise control feature malfunctions and stops working altogether, you may not think it’s an immediate concern. You’ll probably figure that you just can’t use cruise control anymore until you get the problem fixed.

However, the problem with your cruise control might be related to an acceleration issue too. In fact, there are components of cruise control which can have an adverse effect on the acceleration if those components are bad. That is why you need to be aware of what causes cruise control issues.

Common Causes of Cruise Control Not Working

There are several possible causes of cruise control not working. Below are the top 6 most common causes. Check each of these areas and see if they’re the cause of your cruise control issue. In many cases, the remedy to the problem is not that complicated or expensive.

1) Cruise Control Switch

cruise control switch

The cruise control switch is what you use to set your cruising speed. This information is transmitted to the engine control unit and cruise control module in order to sustain the acceleration speed.

If the contacts inside the cruise control switch were to wear out, then the module and unit might not receive the necessary speed information it needs to keep the acceleration going. In response, the system will deactivate entirely and cancel the current cruise acceleration set.

2) Brake Light Switch

bad brake light switch

Normally, you press the brake pedal to turn off cruise control. The brake light switch must be detected by the cruise control system for this to happen.

If it cannot detect the switch, then cruise control will disable itself automatically until the brake light switch issue is fixed.

A faulty brake light switch can also cause your brake lights to stay on .

3) Blown Fuse

fuse box

The electrical components of the cruise control system are protected by fuses. Like inside your house, it is possible to blow a fuse. This will cause the cruise control system to turn off until the fuse is replaced.

4) Check Engine Warning Light

oil pressure check engine light

If the check engine warning light comes on, it usually means there is a problem with your transmission or engine. Once the engine control unit detects this problem, it may disable your cruise control system in response as a safety precaution.

Until you fix the engine issue, the cruise control will stay disabled.

5) Vehicle Speed Sensor

transmission speed sensor

Most vehicles have a few vehicle speed sensors to transmit speed information about the vehicle to the engine control unit and the cruise control module. The only way your cruise control module is going to know how fast the vehicle is moving is if the vehicle speed sensors feed this information to it.

If the module cannot detect the speed because of faulty speed sensors, then the cruise control system will automatically deactivate.

See Also: What Is Speed Volume Compensation?

6) Electrical Issues

car wiring low voltage

There are several electrical components connected to the cruise control system. The connectors and wiring harnesses, and ground straps are definitely components that you need to check when the cruise control stops working.

Make sure the source of the voltage is still supplying power to the system as well. If any of these components are loose or damaged, then it would explain why the cruise control isn’t functioning.

7) Loose or Broken Cruise Control Cable

cruise control cable

Older vehicles that are equipped with cruise control have two throttle cables – one for the gas pedal and one for the cruise control system.

These cables may stretch over time. If the cruise control cable has stretched or is broken, the cruise control system will not be able to operate the throttle plate properly.

Adaptive Cruise Control Specific Problems

adaptive cruise control

Adaptive cruise control gives an extra layer of convenience while driving, as it adjusts your vehicle’s speed based on the distance to the car in front of you. However, this presents additional causes of cruise control failure.

One issue you might face is obstructed sensors. Both radar and cameras are important components of the adaptive cruise control system. When there’s dirt, debris, or ice covering these sensors, your cruise control can stop functioning. To prevent this, regularly clean your vehicle’s sensors, making sure they’re unobstructed.

Separately, failed cameras can also be a culprit. If the cameras aren’t working correctly, you may see an error warning. It’s best to get this checked by a professional to determine whether the cameras need repair or replacement. Hopefully it’s not as they are an expensive replacement.

Apart from cameras, adaptive cruise control relies heavily on radar technology for proper functioning. A misaligned or malfunctioning radar sensor can cause your system to behave irregularly. Again, consult a qualified technician to diagnose the issue and, if needed, recalibrate or replace the radar system.

Safe Driving Without Cruise Control

When cruise control systems fail, it presents challenges adjusting to speed management without the consistent pacing it provides. But there are a few things you can do.

  • Focus on scanning gauges more frequently to stay actively aware of mph.
  • Avoid zoning out on long hauls.
  • Set phone alerts every few miles to remind checking current travel speed.
  • Know highway speed limits well so mentally benchmarking against them continues subconsciously.
  • Take frequent breaks stretching legs to re-energize alertness until able to diagnose cruise faults.
  • Consider alternative adaptive cruise technologies equipped on newer vehicles if financially viable, providing automated incremental slowing when closing distances on lead cars.
  • Remain vigilant of lead car distances and your own speed fluctuations.
  • Utilize open lanes with fewer surrounding vehicles if possible, reducing needs for continual minor adjustments.
  • Stay alert with renewed attention and defensive awareness absent cruise controls automated convenience until repairs are completed.

Intermittent Fault Identification

When cruise controls experience occasional yet repeating failures, meticulously logging every instance of malfunction helps uncover patterns guiding toward root causes.

Date and time each cutoff or disengagement that happens while activated. Detail any environmental or operational conditions present such as: weather, bumpy vs smooth roads, stop & go traffic versus highway speeds.

Reviewing complete repair histories alongside these event logs indicates if previously replaced components only provided temporary fixes before subsequent re-failure later on. Share documented patterns of when and how interruptions occur with shop technicians to guide their pathway tracing and component testing.

The goal is determining if specific elements like an old switch, wire insulation or solder joint chronically breaks down only under certain temperature, vibration or usage strain thresholds.

Cruise Control Repair Costs

So, your cruise control decided to take a break, and now you’re wondering how much it’ll cost to fix it. Well, repair costs vary depending on the specific issue and your vehicle’s make and model. This section will provide you with an idea of what to expect in terms of expenses.

Let’s look at the common reasons for cruise control problems and their approximate price range for replacement or repair:

  • Faulty Cruise Control Switch – $100 – $200. A bit more expensive than a brake light switch.
  • Blown Fuse  – $5 – $30. Quick and affordable to replace.
  • Faulty Brake Light Switch  – $50 – $150. Can be a bit pricier but still manageable.
  • Defective Speed Sensor – $100 – $300. Falls somewhere in the middle of the price spectrum.
  • Throttle Control System Issues – $200 – $600. More expensive to diagnose and fix.
  • ABS-related Problems  – $200 – $1,000. Can also be quite costly to repair.
  • Broken Vacuum Line  – $50 – $150. Applicable to older systems and typically inexpensive to fix.

How Does Cruise Control Work?

If you normally drive long distances, especially on the interstate, then cruise control lets you take your foot off the gas while the car maintains the same speed, giving your leg a rest. This may seem like merely a luxurious feature rather than a necessity, but many people depend on it for safe driving.

There are several different types of cruise control systems, but all implementations share similar basic components. There is a sensor to measure vehicle speed, a throttle position sensor , and some mechanism to control the throttle plate without the use of the gas pedal.

Outputs from the speed and throttle position sensors allow the engine computer to determine how much the throttle plate needs to open or close to maintain speed.

Cruise control systems may also use sensors in the transmission, taking the current gear and engine vacuum into account. Throttle position will be different in each gear at a given speed, especially when driving over hills.

My 2003 GMC Envoy has a cruise control issue that I can’t find a fix for anywhere. When I first crank the car and head down the road the cruise control will not engage. But after driving a mile or so, depending on how cool the weather is, I can turn the engine off and re-crank it. Then the cruise control works. On cooler temps it may take two or three restarts for it to engage. Ideas???

have a 2006 VW new Beetle my cruise works fine until i go to pass some one ,any idea what would cause it to do this? ?

When you hit the gas pedal to overtake, you might be disengaging cruise control.

i’ve heard that bad fuel can create such issue. As stated above, the Check Engine light will come on as part of the safety features to inform you something is not right. Cruise control picks up on this and shuts down.

The engine light was flashing then it stopped then started again, the cruise control is disabled but did come on a couple of times but went off when the engine needed to accelerate, the engine shakes when I. Accelerate too.

my aftermarket cruise on a 2013 Kio Rio LX wont light up

You’re going to have a hard time with finding help for that without providing the name and model of the aftermarket system. It might be best to take it to someone so they can troubleshoot in person.

My cruise indicator light will turn on but when I try to set the speed the light will shut off and not turn back on until I restart the engine. Any ideas what it might be?

Did you ever figure this one out. I got 99 Durango does this too

Cruise control goes rite into high speed when turned on,what could the problem be?

This helped me a lot. I got more out of your 6 reasons a cruise control may not work, than when I inquired about the same situation and got nothing. Thank You, Janet M.

Thanks for the feedback, Janet!

Helpful. Thank you

Radar cruise control warning

radar cruise control not working

  • Add to quote

I have a new 21 M3HT purchased on Oct 8th. On the 8th of November and again last night, Dec 14th, I have gotten a warning that states, "Mazda Cruise Control is unavailable at speeds under 20mph." However, the cruise control still works while this is showing, but the other thing that happens is the auto high beam stays on. The first time it happened it did this every few minutes in a 30 min drive, but the next day it was fine. Last night, it started again, but cleared up a short time into the drive, and today it's fine. Any ideas? Any TSB that covers this? Should I bring it to the dealer?

Sounds normal.. I get this form time to time on both my cars I have a Mazda 3 turbo and a G70 they both more less give the same error.. your camera is likely fogged up or something blocking or blurring your cameras view. I believe the owners manual has this info too.

Thanks

The camera and radar work in tandem for Curse Control. And the auto high beams use the camera as well and if the camera is fogged up can cause the high beams to come on even when on coming traffic. Weather has a huge effect on these safety system's regardless of the manufacture. I've have seen the same issues in almost every brand of car..

It definitely has been during weather that these problems arise... Which seem counter productive as it's during these times when you woukd hope to rely on this technology the most.

radar cruise control not working

When the camera (behind the rearview mirror) does occasionally fog, especially when it is humid and you don't have the AC on or have recirculation on. I've noticed lately that even though I have both the AC on and recirculation off, the windows are fogged when I come back to the car after it's been parked a while. The other thing is the camera area seems to fog up before the rest of the windshield sometime. All that to say, when the camera fogs over in mine it triggers the wipers in auto to try to clean the camera view. It also doesn't accurately dim the high beams because the camera can't distinguish cars. Note that the high beam program looks for sets of lights or cars, not just bright spots. From what I have observed of it. The reason radar cruise keeps working is because it's predominantly radar and the without a working camera for redundancy it won't operate below 20mph. I also assume when in radar cruise control the system uses the camera under 20mph to see pedestrians and other smaller objects that radar wouldn't see as well. I typically get this error when the system knows the camera area is dirty or if the sun is shining at just the right angle to cause a glare on the camera. If you wanted to fix or mitigate this then clean your windshield regularly with a microfiber towel and use AC/defogger setting with the air conditioner.

Thanks for the info. I will make note of the condition of the window, should it happen again. However, it's winter here so no AC. But, the windows can fog, but the first time it happened, I'm sure I would have defogged the windows as I normally do, but it kept warning me intermittently during a 30 minute drive.

radar cruise control not working

  • Add to quote

Has anyone else had problems with the cruise control not working in their 2019s? It's very intermittent for me (enough that there is a 90% chance I would get a "could not replicate" if I did the 2 hour drive to the dealership) but occasionally the radar cruise will not turn on. I mean that as in no response to the cruise button (Usually I get a dash prompt "Radar Cruise Active", not that it won't set. The few times it has happened it works fine again if I pull over and shot the car off, wait a few seconds and restart it. No trouble codes in the infotainment system or warning lights.

Sure that it isn't "finger trouble"? I often manage to press the cruise button together with another, so it doesn't activate. Or push the cancel button together with the in- or decrease button... And there are a lot of circumstances the cruise won't activate, like in manual, terrain, mud&snow etc. mode.... And an number of special circumstances (look @ the manual for those).

Mine looks to work perfectly as expected so far with all buttons for the past 5 months and I use it daily. I do not use adaptive though.

Yes-,2x now It’s random. Restarting after I pulled over fixed it. Not pleasant.

Dynamic Radar Cruise Contol Winter Problems

  • Add to quote

Has anyone had a problem with DRCC working below freezing. Vehicle is garaged and no snow or water on road ways. DRCC will work until outside temperture drops below freezing. Can not use normal crusie control until I turn off DRCC. Experienced this in winter of 2015 and winter of 2016. I get an error on display. Soon as outside temperature is above freezing DRCC works. My 2015 Highlander Limited Platinum (6400)miles owner 1.5 years. I love on the tech features.

radar cruise control not working

Sounds like a trip to the dealer is in order, hopefully if it's cold causing a sensor or module to fail it'll have set a code. If the dealer complains it's not cold enough out tell them to spray the parts with some canned air to freeze them for testing.

Good points. Last year no code was recorded and dealer was not aware of any problems. I did capture some pictures of the error indicator on the display. Was wondering if it was acting correctly and shuting off below freezing.

note error indicated next to outside temperature at 18 F and no error at 41 F.

i dont think that's an error. that's an indicator that roads are freezing and you have to drive cautiously. I have not seen any problems using drcc in below freezing temperatures.. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using Tapatalk

What does the owners manual say about this under the cruise control section?

Owners manual only tells you how to turn off DRCC. Does show anywhere that I can find the white indicator I get displayed when DRCC is no longer functioning. When I mentioned this to the dealer last year, that never heard or scene the indicator. Did not have pictures that time. Going in for service next week, so this time I have pictures. Just would love to have to some information from others. This is the my home town dealer service department (who I purchased from) that told me I did not drive enough.

Might be useful to email those photos along with an explanation of your issue to Toyota customer care, they may need to send some training materials to the dealer or send someone out to look at it.

Bitter thanks for the suggestions. Will do that if not results at my service next week (1.5 year now and 6300 miles)

that "error" is for the ambient temp warning of possible freezing roads. mine kicks on at 37f.

Yeah, everything in those pics is totally normal. As mentioned above, the indicator next to the outdoor temp is an advisory about possible freezing conditions on the road below 37F/3C. That has nothing to do with the cruise control. I haven't had any temperature-related issues with the DRCC. You don't really turn off DRCC. You can cycle between Cruise Off > DRCC > "normal" cruise control, so you choose which kind of cruise control to use. It's always in that order - you have to pass through the DRCC mode to get to the "normal" mode. rctini, can you describe what you mean when you say the cruise isn't working? Are you not getting a display on the dash that you think you should, or does the dash indicate that cruise is on (a green icon with a round dial, either with or without a car for DRCC or normal) but it's not holding the speed? DRCC can be affected by weather, but it's usually rain/snow/fog - something in the air that could affect the reception of the radar signal that's sent out from the Toyota logo in the front grille.

I've been using it all the time since I bought mine 2/23/17. Plenty of single digit and low teen temps without any issues.

I've driven my '17 HL in -20C temps a few times and have used radar cruise, never an issue. In one snow/slush/rain/freezing rain event I had the system tell me to clean the camera. That waited till I got home.

I never knew I could switch between adaptive cruise control and constant speed cruise control! Thanks for prompting me to finally read the manual and learn how to do that.

Has anyone had problems with cruise control deciding not to work

  • Add to quote

My first problem with this car, today while on highway I could not engage cruise control, it said "not available" even though I had the lane markers at the top of drivers screen. I pulled off highway and reset IHU and checked for any blockage (dirt, etc) in front of cameras on top of windshield and radar on front grill and found nothing, locked the car and walked away for 5 mins but no luck. Anyone else have this problem or suggestion?

Was your foot on the accelerator? ACC won't engage if you are actively accelerating.

I was holding my speed like I normally do and tried to engage numerous times but all I got was "not available"

I have the latest software, same as yours normally called June update and my steering assist has been turned off since I picked this up end of June. I have had no problems with cruise control which I use often until yesterday.

Pilot assist is not on the main infotainment screen under driving. Can be toggled on and off on that screen.

radar cruise control not working

This is kinda peculiar, because I've also had the same "Not available" error for the first time today - running the June update for a few weeks now, and have never had a problem with it engaging cruise control before now. Front camera and the front-facing sensors by the rear mirror are clean and debris-free. Tried the usual "fix everything" technique of resetting the center console, which unsurprisingly did nothing, but was worth a go. Now just onto hoping it just mysteriously works when I try again tomorrow.

  • brake temperature is high
  • the radar sensor is blocked by e.g. wet snow or rain.
  • The radar sensor is blocked and cannot detect other vehicles. For example, in the event of heavy rain or if slush has collected in front of the radar sensor.

I’ve had this issue before but it resolved itself overnight. It had nothing to do with dirty cameras; it was just the software having a temper tantrum. I haven’t yet gotten the June update. I’ve also never had a problem starting ACC regardless of whether I was accelerating or not. I do believe that the system puts the target speed differently depending on whether you are accelerating or decelerating, but I need to test that more since I just noticed that last week.

Same exact problem today. Clear sunny day all cameras clean. No ACC or driver Google map display. Rebooted, got map function back bot “not available” ACC. No software updates since delivery mid May in Massachusetts. Dealer is Not helpful, actually useless! Will call Volvo customer service again - not much use either though.

Did you try getting cruise control to engage with someone in front of you? Sometimes at first Margo needed to see someone to feel confident. Then she got used to it … Semi joke above but I do remember the car occasional not wanting to engage adaptive unless it could see someone. Despite all i joke about our cars settling down and adapting I really hope there is no machine learning in there …

check if the hood is completely closed, especially on the passenger side.

This occasionally happens to me if I try to activate in traffic and the car ahead of me is decelerating. If it's unavailable continually in normal traffic moving at a fairly constant pace, it suggests a hiccup somewhere in the system.

radar cruise control not working

Any updates on how to solve the ACC being unavailable? Mine stopped working today when I "started" the car and second trip also no go. Will check tomorrow again if anything changes. Window, sensors and camera all clean.

radar cruise control not working

Ours is in the shop for this now.

Let me know what they find, my ACC is still not working.

Back from being fixed. Still not working.

What did they do to try and fix it?

They said it was a software issue. They thought they fixed it. Maybe they should have tested it out.

Would be nice if they had tested it …

radar cruise control not working

I just dropped my '22 off at the dealer for the same issue. Fingers crossed.

I had the problem where it showed "unavailable", booked the car in at the dealer as the problem lasted about 4 days and one day before I was due to take it it it started working again. no issues again, so I'm keeping an eye out for any issues.

Yesterday I get a call saying the problem has been resolved by performing a battery reset. This recalibrated the active safety domain module, which was showing faults and not initializing before the reset. I won't pretend to know what any of that means, just glad it was a fairly quick turn-around. Hopefully it's a permanent fix.

My ACC stopped on Monday and was out all week. I happened to get the 1.7 firmware update today - and now it's working again. Go figure...

Radar cruise control not working correctly.

radar cruise control not working

  • Add to quote

So I just recently took a 2000 mile round trip. The radar cruise control is a big help but not when it’s behaving strangely. I had maybe 6-7 instances over 2000 miles where nothing was around me at all and the car would slam on the brakes down to nearly 20mph from 75-80mph. On one of these occasions it nearly got me killed and a truck had to go off the road to avoid rear ending me. After the 3rd time I changed my screen to the cruise control screen that shows the cars it detects ahead. And each time it showed it was detecting a car. Even though no car was in sight ahead of me. I took it to the dealer who drove it for 10 minutes and said they couldn’t reproduce the issue. What a surprise. This seems to be a huge safety issue. My radar was unobstructed and dealer says it’s working fine. I see no option to use standard cruise control. It’s either the smart cruise control with the radar or nothing. Anyone else run into this issue?

Something very odd during this visit. For my “Trouble”. They gave me 4 free brand new Hankook Kinergy ST 70k mile warranty tires. I was dumbfounded. My previous tires were Hankook dynapro hp2 and we’re fine. Had about 40k miles left in them. When I asked the service advisor why she just said that’s what the manager wanted us to do. I asked to speak to him and he had left. It really made no sense but I’m wondering if there is a connection to the issue or if they made a mistake and gave me new tires. But the receipt shows 4 new tires and $0 for everything. I’ll post a pic of the receipt when I get home.

But why does it only happen when you are using smart cruise? Wouldn't the autonomous braking kick in if the system sensed an impending collision?

The system allows u to change to regular cruise control. It is in the manual, something like press the cruise button for 10s, something like that.

****, this is good to know. At times I enjoy smart. Some I don't.

My wife had something similar happen once, but not while using cruise control, just driving. The car detected an object ahead started a warning beep and wife thinks something flashing on the cluster, then the brakes auto applied for just a second, then released and the car continued like nothing happened. She was a little freaked out to say the least. There was no oncoming traffic at the time on a single lane road. She was alone on the road. These automated systems could cause a horrific accident if a malfunction happens at the wrong moment like the OPs where a truck had to swerve off the road to avoid collision. EDIT: I meant to make a thread about this months ago, but forgot. I should have.
