20. Inca Rail, South America

If you’re interested in taking a train to Machu Picchu (and unless you’re a mountain goat, we suggest you do), Inca Rail offers a level of convenience that is difficult to match—and it’s also worth mentioning that the First Class service is priced more accessibly than other luxury operators servicing the same route. While on board, you can expect a tasty menu prepared with organic ingredients grown right in the Sacred Valley, live Peruvian music, ample windows through which you can admire the staggering Andean scenery, and a spacious Observatory Lounge complete with open-air balcony. For fresh and frothy Pisco sours this good, this is one train that’s well worth the price of admission.

19. Transcantabrico Gran Lujo, Spain

Take in all the sights and flavors of Spain ’s iconic northern coastline on this luxurious sleeper train, which over the course of a week makes its way between San Sebastián and Santiago de Compostela. You’ll enjoy on-board cuisine that celebrates each of the distinct regions through which this train passes, from Galicia to Basque Country. A unique aspect of this train is that it remains stationary overnight, allowing for late-night excursions and explorations that are uncommon on other sleeper train experiences.

18. Glacier Express, Switzerland

It’s been said that the Glacier Express is the slowest express in the world–it takes eight hours to traverse the 180-mile journey–but boy, do the views here invite a slow journey. Connecting the resort towns of Zermatt and Saint Moritz, the train provides an up-close perspective of some of this mountainous country’s most iconic natural features, including the Matterhorn, Piz Bernina, and the Rhine Gorge (dubbed Switzerland’s Grand Canyon). Book in Excellence Class and you’ll be served Champagne at your seat, followed by a six-course meal complete with wine pairings.

17. The Canadian, Canada

Take in every mile of the vast Canadian landscape from The Canadian , a special sleeper service offered by VIA Rail, the country’s national rail carrier. Keep in mind that this train is more about sightseeing from the cars than actually getting off and doing anything. But if you’re traveling in the comfort of Prestige Class—with your own private cabin, private washroom and built-in TV screen monitor with video selection—you’ll be perfectly content to take in the journey from the privacy of your very own picture window.

The Ghan Train Australia

16. The Ghan, Australia

Completed in 1929, The Ghan runs through the heart of the Australian continent , from Adelaide in the south to Darwin in the north. It may have only started running its current route in 2004, but its history dates to the 19th century, its name harkening to the Afghan camel trainers and riders who first helped chart a course through the country’s interior. The three-day all-inclusive journey sees the train lilting its way through Australia’s Red Centre with diverse landscapes passing by. Travel through the expansive ridges of the MacDonnell Ranges, witness the awe-inspiring beauty of Simpsons Gap, and visit the opal town of Coober Pedy.

JR Kyushu 363

15. JR Kyushu 36+3, Japan

This train’s unusual name derives from Kyushu being the 36th-largest island in the world, and there being three key stakeholders on this journey: the passengers, the local community, and the rail company, JR Kyushu. It isn’t a sleeper train, instead offering a series of weeklong roster of one-day itineraries around the perimeter of Kyushu–a do one, do them all, or do as many as you like situation–but the journey is no less enriching for it. The inside feels like a ryokan, featuring immaculate woodwork made from local techniques, comfortable furniture, and a mix of private and communal spaces. It’s a gorgeous way to get off the beaten track on this gorgeous Japanese island, packing in a number of stops and towns into a single day of productive–yet comfortable–sightseeing.

train interior. Belmond Eastern Oriental Express

14. Eastern & Oriental Express, A Belmond Train, Southeast Asia

The E&O is the stuff of train enthusiasts’ legends, and in February 2024, this storied train will at long last resume service after its pandemic-era pause–sort of. The train’s journey originally connected Singapore and Bangkok, but as of the new year will offer journeys through the jungles and coastlines of Malaysia, but all originating in and returning to Singapore. It isn’t the classic E&O route, but these new itineraries will offer deeper explorations of Malaysia than ever before, including guided snorkeling on Langkawi and excursions to Taman Negara National Park. Despite the new itineraries, the train still has all the old world touches that people love: Order a Singapore Sling in the Bar Car, take it to the outdoor viewing platform as the Malaysian jungle rolls on by, and you just might forget what year we’re living in.

13. Northern Belle, Europe

It’s all about the food—and the scenery, too, but mostly about the food—onboard this lovingly restored 1930s train , which zig-zags its way across the English, Scottish and Welsh countrysides. Each of the journeys on offer are day trips, so they require less of a time (and money) commitment than other luxury trains. But what the Northern Belle lacks in length she more than makes up for in quality: The meal services are exquisite, offering fine dining crafted mostly from U.K. suppliers, so you can enjoy classic British fare as the heaths, meadows, and dales roll on by.

12. The Maharajas' Express, India

There are luxury sleeper trains, and then there are luxury sleeper trains like the Maharaja’s Express , where a greeting of marigold garlands and rose petals showered at your feet kicks off the journey before your personal butler escorts you to your room. The Junior Suite rooms are surprisingly spacious, especially by train travel standards, and come with full-sized closets, comfortable beds, private bathrooms, and satellite TVs. Both of the on board watering holes–the Safari Bar and the Raja Club–have plenty of chairs, comfy sofas, books and board games. Each day of the itinerary includes special opportunities to experience India through the train’s luxurious and singular perspective: like an early-morning champagne breakfast on a private hillside overlooking the Taj Mahal.

Belmond Royal Scotsman. train interior

11. Royal Scotsman, A Belmond Train, Scotland

It’s about the journey, not the destination, right? Nowhere is train travel more indulgent—or convenient!—than on Belmond’s Royal Scotsman , which departs from and arrives at Edinburgh’s Waverley Station. With only 40 guests onboard, the train circumnavigates the heart of the Scottish Highlands, passing such landmarks as the Kyle of Lochalsh and Cairngorms National Park. There’s even a dedicated spa carriage, where the specialists are trained to synchronize their motions with the natural lilts and tilts of the train. If that’s not luxury, we’re not sure what is.

Belmond Hiram Bingham

10. Belmond Hiram Bingham, A Belmond Train, South America

Named after the U.S. explorer who supposedly “discovered” Machu Picchu in 1911, the Belmond Hiram Bingham train line is as grand as the man’s claims. The round-trip journey connects the city of Poroy (just west of Cuzco) to the Lost City and Sacred Valley of Machu Picchu. The Belmond Hiram Bingham turns on the turn-of-the-20th-century charm, from gleaming polished wood and brass surfaces to lavish meals and accommodations, which offer plenty of space to stretch out: the perfect setting for viewing the mountains and rivers zooming past the window.

9. Golden Chariot, India

Experience a mix of Southern India’s greatest hits and lesser-explored destinations on board the iconic purple and gold Golden Chariot , which connects the Indian states of Karnataka, Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. All itineraries depart from Bengaluru, with options for both three-night and six-night journeys. This train’s strength is its access to off-beat attractions than what you’ll find on the well-worn Golden Triangle, such as the ruins of Hampi. With sparse crowds, and a comfortable train to retreat to at the end of each day, it’s an approach to India that captures all the magic this country has to offer.

8. Golden Eagle Danube Express, Europe

A pioneer in luxury trains for three decades, Golden Eagle is perhaps best known for its Silk Road and Trans-Siberian routes, but the Danube Express unlocks an approach to Southern and Eastern Europe which is no less breathtaking and engaging. The “Castles of Transylvania” route from Istanbul to Budapest is particularly unique–spend all day learning about Vlad the Impaler’s history through guided tours, then spend all night luxuriating in the comfort of the bar car or in the privacy of your room. It’s a combination of Europe’s best cities and most dramatic natural landscapes that is hard to experience in one go any other way.

Rocky Mountaineer

7. Rocky Mountaineer, North America

Traveling in a coach outfitted with picture windows and glass-dome ceilings means that a Rocky Mountaineer journey leaves no sight unseen as you traverse the dramatic scenery between Vancouver , British Columbia and Banff or Jasper, Alberta. Sample local Canadian beer, wine and snacks as you kick back and enjoy the ride. The staff’s friendly service and animated storytelling help bring the landscape to life. It’s personal touches like those which keep travelers coming away from this trip amply satisfied time and time again. Since it was founded in 1990, Rocky Mountaineer has transported more than two million guests, making it the largest privately-owned premium tourist train in the world.

6. Rovos Rail, Africa

This extravagant railway has been traveling throughout Africa for over thirty years. The experiences start before you even board—when departing from Pretoria, Rovos Rail travelers are granted exclusive access to a private lounge, where Champagne and canapés greet them—and a strict “no cellphone” rule is maintained for your own good. Enjoy the moment(s) provided by this line, which range from cozy digs to formal-attired evenings, as well as full-sized, freestanding clawfoot tubs in the most grand compartments. All Rovos Rail journeys include off-train cultural, historical and safari excursions so guests can experience all the wonders that Southern Africa has to offer. The three-night Cape Town journey is a classic, but if you’re feeling extra adventurous and have a few more nights to spare, opt for the newer fifteen-day “Trail of Two Oceans” itinerary, originating in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, crossing Zambia, traversing a sliver of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and concluding in Lobito, Angola.

Belmond Andean Explorer

5. Belmond Andean Explorer, A Belmond Train, South America

Weaving through the Peruvian Andes at 14,000 feet, the Belmond Andean Explorer transports passengers between Arequipa and Cusco on one- and two-night journeys. There are just thirty-five cabins on board, each outfitted with alpaca wool blankets and handwoven fabrics for an authentic yet luxe feel. Two dining cars and two bar cars serve the whims of every guest with bites like alpaca tortellini and (of course) champagne. The train also makes excursions to Lake Titicaca , where guests can learn about local customs, visit Incan ruins, and take in breath-taking views.

Belmond British Pullman

4. British Pullman, A Belmond Train, England

The British Pullman ’s experience is magical no matter where you’re seated. Once you depart London , you’ll embark on a journey through the bucolic British countryside, touring cities and towns like Cambridge, York, and Canterbury along the way. The restored carriages date back to the 1920s and 1930s, so expect Art Deco touches, polished interiors, and classically prepared multi-course meals—this is the same train line that has served British royalty and government officials for years, after all.

train interior

3. Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, Europe

Year after year, the world’s most iconic locomotive continues to be a standard-setter in luxury. Of course, the decadent interiors are a fantasy of 1920’s Art Deco design, but it’s the impeccable service that keeps this train firmly ensconced in a class of its own. Bags are whisked off from the platform and magically reappear in your cabin, no glass ever runs empty, and the beds seem to make themselves anytime you step outside of your cabin. By day you can revel in the scenery of French countrysides and Swiss mountain scenes, and by night, the formal dress code feels anything but stuffy—in fact, playing dress up and making your way to the Champagne bar is, we think, one of the coolest experiences anyone could have on a train. For 2023, this over-the-top train is getting even more luxe updates, including eight new suites, two of which are original 1920s and 30s carriages carefully restored by expert French craftsmen and designers–so there’s no time like the present to book that bucket-list trip.

Palace on Wheels Train

2. Palace on Wheels, India

India’s best-known train, the Palace on Wheels , offers a number of trips that range from a couple days to week-long excursions. Embarking from New Delhi through the Land of Kings, trips take you through the famed Pink City of Jaipur, in Rajasthan, where guests are greeted by majestic UNESCO sites like the Amer Fort as well as 16th century palaces. You can also visit Agra, home to the Taj Mahal and the perfect stop for a tour of some of the country's most iconic sites. Along the way, enjoy regional cuisine in well-appointed, colorful carriages decked out in Indian textiles.

Seven Stars Kyushu

1. Seven Stars in Kyushu, Japan

Train lovers consider this opulent Japanese locomotive among the most spacious and comfortable of them all. Every inch of Seven Stars' Kyushu train—from the beds, to the bathroom sinks, to the woodwork, to the porcelain dinner plates—is handmade by Japanese artisans, and the service is simply exquisite, with each journey limited to a positively intimate twenty passengers; but it’s not just about the onboard experience with Seven Stars. These four-day, three-night trips travel a circuit around the island of Kyushu, making stops at the region’s best shrines, onsens, porcelain studios, and more, so you truly feel like you’re exploring an authentic side of Japan , far away from the more obvious tourist tracks.

Keep in mind that some train routes have limited availability, so it’s best to plan and book early.

Packing Essentials

  • Comfortable clothing : Opt for layers as the weather in New England can be unpredictable. Pack a light jacket, a sweater, and a hat to protect yourself from chilly winds or sudden temperature drops.
  • Good walking shoes : New England train tours often include stops where you can explore charming towns or engage in outdoor activities. Make sure to pack comfortable shoes that are suitable for walking or hiking.
  • Camera or smartphone : You’ll encounter breathtaking scenery along the train routes, so don’t forget to capture those memorable moments. Whether you prefer a dedicated camera or rely on your smartphone, having a device to document your journey is a must.
  • Snacks and water : While some train tours offer onboard dining options, it’s always a good idea to bring some snacks and water to keep yourself refreshed during the ride. Pack some granola bars, fruits, or other non-perishable snacks that will sustain you until your next stop.
  • Personal toiletries : Although most trains provide basic amenities, it’s advisable to bring your own toiletries such as toothbrush, toothpaste, and any other personal items you may need during the journey.

Remember to pack light as you’ll be traveling by train, and space can be limited, especially if you’re planning to stay overnight in sleeping cars.

Transportation to and from Train Stations

Before embarking on your New England train tour, it’s essential to plan your transportation to and from the train stations. Here are some options to consider:

  • Public transportation : Many train stations in New England are well-connected to local public transportation networks. You can utilize buses, taxis, or rideshare services to reach the train stations conveniently.
  • Car rental : If you prefer the flexibility of having your own vehicle, renting a car is a viable option. Most train stations have parking facilities where you can leave your car for the duration of your tour.

It’s important to factor in the time it takes to reach the train station, especially if you have a specific departure time to catch. Plan your transportation accordingly, allowing for potential traffic or delays.

By considering these planning tips for your New England train tour, you’ll be well-prepared to embark on a seamless and enjoyable journey. From the dawn of railways, there have been people fascinated with the technology of trains, their design and the engineering feats that made rail travel possible in difficult terrain. Today many people travel far and wide to see or ride specific trains and lines or to visit museums.

Understand [ edit ]

Since their inception, railways have been about more than just transporting goods and people from one place to another. The puffing of the earliest steam locomotives captivated the cities and towns wherever it arrived and today the sheer power of freight trains, the elegance and streamlined sleekness of modern high speed rail or the modern marvels of engineering that are train stations, bridges, tunnels or marshaling yards are a sight to behold and a reason for tourism all in itself. You don't have be an enthusiast listing numbers and dates of train sightings in a book to appreciate the beauty and fascination that is rail travel and everything associated with it. Railroads themselves often were boosters of tourism. After a line had been built, its owners would extol the beauty of the places it served and the speed with which one could get there by rail to attract more riders and some railroad tourism advertisements have become iconic. These days, railroads continue to extol the natural beauty of the landscapes traversed or the cities served even if the speed is nothing to write home about or limit themselves to short snappy "A to B in x amount of time" advertisements when they know they are the fastest option there is.

Events [ edit ]

Tunnels [ edit ]

As railways operate best on a level surface blasting and drilling through mountains has been part of rail travel almost from the beginning. Linking islands and mainlands across the sea and tunneling at the very base of vast massives have produced tunnels longer than a marathon. The longest tunnels in the world are all invariably electric railway only as ventilation of car exhaust becomes (next to) impossible for tunnels above a certain length.

Mountain railways [ edit ]

rail enthusiast tours

Railroads through mountainous terrain are among the most impressive feats of engineering of mankind. Planners and builders were operating at the very edge of the technically possible of their era and sometimes pushing beyond that. Even if you don't care for the engineering, the views from viaducts or bridges alone can make the trip worthwhile all by themselves.

Buy [ edit ]

  • Various items of rail memorabilia (maps, timetables, porcelain china, postcards, books and magazines, lamps and lanterns) are sold at auction or by dealers in antiquities. A few specialised auctions and dealers trade just in "railwayana" or "railroadiana", artefacts of current or former railways worldwide.
  • Model rail cars and track are commonly available in various standard sizes; these vary from simple toys to meticulous scale reproductions of current or historic engines, cars and infrastructure.
  • Heritage and tourist railways often operate a souvenir shop. While many of the items will merely be the rail line's logo printed onto everything from toys to mugs to "train driver's hats", T-shirts and apparel, there may be books of rail history or rail photography, postcards and documentary video for sale.
  • Operating mainline railways (CN, CSX) and passenger carriers (Amtrak, VIA) often have their logos printed on souvenirs, apparel, baggage or model rail rolling stock for sale on a website.
  • Transportation and rail museums are also likely to operate souvenir shops and offer books or documentary for sale.

Eat [ edit ]

rail enthusiast tours

In the earliest days of passenger rail, options were limited; one could bring food or try to purchase a meal near the stations. The local selection often was of poor quality; in some cases, trains would leave at the end of a brief rest stop while diners were still waiting to be served. Soon, rail operators were leasing space to restaurateurs in the stations; the Fred Harvey Company established the first restaurant chain in 1875 with ultimately a restaurant every hundred miles throughout the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe system. The next innovation was the inclusion of special dining cars on the train; these became very popular on long-distance runs such as la Compagnie des Wagon-Lits historic Orient Express from Paris to Constantinople .

Much of the cuisine served on trains and at stations is eminently forgettable, either because the same fare can be readily found elsewhere or because the rail operator is merely treating voyageurs as a captive market. There are exceptions; on some heritage and tourist train lines a dinner train is the main event, a slow but scenic short run which provides just enough time to serve an elaborate but expensive meal.

In some cases, historic station buildings have been re-purposed to be full-service restaurants or have been restored to reflect the heyday of a lost era before motorways and drive-through fast food.

  • 51.42909 -116.188062 1 Lake Louise Railway Station & Restaurant , 200 Sentinel Road, Lake Louise , Alberta, Canada , ☏ +1 403-522-2600 . Interesting building and a few exhibits for rail enthusiasts. Reasonable food but the number of tables exceeds the kitchen capacity, so expect a long wait at peak times. ( updated Jun 2015 )

There are also a few novelty restaurants where a rail-themed "All Aboard Diner" or "All Aboard Restaurant" brings plates of food to diners aboard a model railway train. These have no historic significance, but are entertaining for small children.

Drink [ edit ]

Historically, the status of beverage service (and alcohol in particular) aboard passenger trains is mixed. Diner cars often did serve beverages, although a patchwork of provincial or state regulation often meant the bar opened or closed every time the train crossed a political boundary. Passengers in sleeper train compartments were sometimes permitted to bring their own food and beverages, while dining cars only allowed items sold on the train and short-line commuter services often prohibited food or drink very restrictively.

A few tourist trains employ enotourism or brewery tour themes; there's a Tequila Train from Guadalajara to the distillery in Jalisco , México and an intercity Napa Wine Train in California 's Napa Valley .

At least one former station has been repurposed as a brew pub:

  • The NCO Railway (see Nevada–California–Oregon Railway on Wikipedia) completed a narrow-gauge line from Reno , Nevada north to the California - Oregon border in 1912, only to go broke by 1925. The Southern Pacific Company (now Union Pacific) purchased and re-gauged the line. The 39.531 -119.8095 1 Nevada-California-Oregon Railroad Depot (325 East Fourth St, Reno NV) and a vacant Locomotive House and Machine Shop (401 East Fourth St.) still stand, although the tracks and turntable are gone. The Depot was renovated in 2014-2015 and opened as a craft brewery distillery .

Stay safe [ edit ]

In some parts of the world, taking pictures of trains or rail infrastructure could cause issues with the authorities. Authorities in the United States may regard too much interest in a railway as possible reconnaissance for terrorist activities, while some railway staff simply treats railfans as troublemakers. On the other hand, some railways have sought to cooperate with railway enthusiasts to be better informed about the state of their track and/or suspicious activities. Some railways have programs which interested people can register for. They also offer safety guidelines more exhaustive than this travel guide.

rail enthusiast tours

It is easy to underestimate the speed of an approaching train, and you need to be at safe distance when it passes, also considering the wind it creates – and at stations careless people rushing past. In some railway systems (such as China Railway, and for old cars even Finnish VR), toilets on passenger trains may discharge human waste directly on tracks. Maintaining safe distance when photographing may be necessary also to prevent property loss and unpleasant experiences.

Interfering with railway operations, either intentionally or unintentionally, can pose a risk to yourself as well as many other people traveling on the train itself. Most railway operators (including a number of working museums and heritage lines) prohibit flash photography, as a flash could distract personnel at a critical moment.

Trip Summary

2025 itinerary.

Day 1: HANOI

Welcome to Vietnam! Your VIP treatment starts right away. One of our team will meet you as you exit the plane and guide you through the immigration process. They’ll even help you retrieve your luggage – when does that ever happen? Once you’re through immigration, they’ll deliver you safely into the hands of your guide, who will whisk you directly to the hotel.

Tonight, get to know the group over dinner for the first catch up – at one of our favourite local restaurants, of course!

ACCOMMODATION: GM Premium  Hotel – Deluxe room (or similar) INCLUDED: Dinner

Day 2: THE OLD QUARTER

Early mornings in Hanoi are all about makeshift market stalls and boisterous coffee houses. So, let’s skip the hotel breakfast and fill up on crusty baguettes stuffed with fresh ingredients, as you explore Hanoi like a local with your guide. Here’s a tip! Try the local (Vietnamese recipe) iced coffee, or the egg coffee if you dare – these are unique to Vietnam.

Hanoi’s Old Quarter has been around for more than 1000 years, and while you wander along its cobblestone lanes today, you’ll catch the heady scent of incense wafting from ancestral temples, and come to understand how the city’s many cultural incarnations contribute to its eclectic charm. Wrap up the day over a relaxing drink in a neighbourhood Bia Hoi or Beerhall.

ACCOMMODATION: GM Premium  Hotel – Deluxe room (or similar) INCLUDED: Breakfast and Lunch

Day 3: LAN HA BAY

Cruising on Halong Bay is on plenty of travellers’ bucket lists. But have you heard of Lan Ha Bay? It’s remote compared to its celebrity neighbour, has scenery that is just as jaw-dropping, and best of all, none of the tourist hordes!

You’ll transfer by road after breakfast and set sail by lunchtime on The Heritage Cruise. Join in with the deserted-beach and water-cave excursions, make use of the onboard kayaks, or just relax on your cabin’s private balcony, cocktail in hand, watching the sunset over the Gulf of Tonkin.

ACCOMMODATION: Heritage Cruise – Ocean Cabin (or similar) INCLUDED: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 4: LAN HA BAY AND SLEEPER TRAIN

Early risers can join the Vovinam (Vietnam’s martial arts) class on the sundeck. Then jump aboard a traditional rowboat to go into the Light and Dark Cave. You’ll glide through the cave’s opening which is framed by fig trees and orchids, and into its silent darkness, only to be bathed in light once more when you pop out the other side and into the hidden lagoon.

After Brunch, it’s time to say your goodbyes to the Heritage crew and reunite with your guide and driver for the last road transfer of the trip. This afternoon you’re back in Hanoi with just enough time to stretch your legs and maybe pick up that last minute Hanoian souvenir.

Day 4.5: OVERNIGHT TRAIN TO DONG

After a local restaurant dinner with your fellow MagRailers , it’s All Aboard your first ride on Vietnam’s Reunification Express: Hanoi to Phong Nha. Yep – your first long-haul train ride is a sleeper! They’re 4 berthed shared compartments with toilets at the end of the carriage. But if you fancy a little privacy, private berths can be arranged!

INCLUDED: Brunch and Dinner

Day 5: PHONG NHA

The train should pull into Dong Hoi Station around 6am and your room will already be prepared for you at the Lake House. Take a rest, and breakfast at your leisure, before regrouping later to visit Phong Nha Cave. As the riverboat chugs along the Son River, you’ll be forgiven for thinking you’ve stepped back in time. This prehistoric-like landscape is backdrop-perfection to riverside villages barely changed in centuries. And the sound of children playing on the riverbank will joyfully echo in your memory long after you’re back at home.

The entrance to the cave is literally a hole at the base of a towering limestone cliff and your boat will glide right on through. The underground river system stretches for kilometres, but your boat will moor, so you can tread the boardwalk to be closer to the ancient stalactite and rock formations.

Then, back to the Lake House – be sure to use some of your leisure time later today relaxing on your private lakeside balcony.

ACCOMMODATION: Phong Nha Lake House, Bungalow with lake view, or similar INCLUDED: Breakfast

Today’s train to Hue is a three-hour ride on a local train. These trains aren’t known for their punctuality, and there’s nothing further planned today except check-in and, of course, dinner – so why not say hi to some local fellow travellers and sit back and enjoy the ride.

Did somebody mention dinner?

Vietnamese food is to Hue, like Pizza is to Naples – it’s the traditional home of much of Vietnam’s deliciousness. So tonight, we’ve planned our favourite food tour of all! What an enjoyable rush as your cyclo-driver skilfully manoeuvres his rickshaw along tiny alleyways to the best street-food venues in town! Your tastebuds will do a merry dance trying treats like Hue’s crispy savoury pancakes and for your sweet tooth, the sweet soups are surprisingly delicious.

ACCOMMODATION: Eldora Hotel, Deluxe City View Room, or similar

INCLUDED: Breakfast box and Dinner Food Tour

Come out today to see Hue through the eyes of a local. Your neighbourhood guide will share childhood stories about life during the war and intimate family history as you’re led down side-streets abuzz with local life. Then travel by boat to a riverside village whose families have created bronze pieces since the 1500s.

Enjoy your leisure time tonight – your hotel is well situated to wander out and explore the nearby neighbourhoods and local restaurants. It may be that you decide to track  down one of your favourite food spots from last night’s feasting for one more serve of your favourite dish!

INCLUDED: Breakfast and Lunch

Day 8: HOI AN

The train leaves for Da Nang at 9am. The trip should only take a round 2.5 hours, but gazing out the window as the train crawls along Hai Van Pass – coastline drama to your left, mountains to your right – you’ll be hoping that time slows. Not surprisingly, this part of the journey features regularly in those ‘10 best’ travel lists we all read. Train trip finished, Hoi An is a 45-minute road transfer from Da Nang Station.

Hoi An. Yes, it’s a tourist hotspot. It’s also a must-see, so we’ve made sure your experience is not a generic one. But first, you need to see what everyone else comes for, and on this afternoon’s walking tour of the old town, you’ll discover why its UNESCO Heritage status is well deserved.

ACCOMMODATION: Allegro Hoi An resort, Junior Suite room (or similar) INCLUDED: Breakfast and Dinner

Day 9: HOI AN

By now your love for Vietnamese food will be an obsession and today you can nurture that along even more! The group will head out on bicycles to follow a food trail – from farm to plate. (Again, it’s an easy ride, but you’re welcome to travel by car.) You’ll meet friendly market stallholders selling local ingredients and farmers who grow them just nearby. At the end, you’ll connect with your chef, learn about cooking, and get to share the spoils over lunch. No previous cooking experience required!

The remainder of the day is at your leisure. Spend it in your splendid accommodation or wander through the old town. It’s user friendly – there’s even an Irish Pub if you’re feeling like a change of scene!

ACCOMMODATION: Allegro Hoi An resort, Junior Suite room (or similar) INCLUDED: Breakfast and Lunch

Day 10: THE VIETAGE LUXURY CARRIAGE TO QUY NHON

There’s an early checkout and breakfast is served in a box, but that’s of no consequence today, because for the rest of the day, you’ll be travelling in luxury. The Vietage carriage departs with the southbound Reunification Express from Da Nang at 8am, and your group will have it all to yourselves – a fitting finale to your train rides!

Once onboard, you’re welcome to sit at the bar – for a specialty coffee, of course! Or settle into your window seat and watch central Vietnam amble by, outside. Keep an eye out for the ruins of the Hindu Champa Kingdom from the 4th century. There’s lunch onboard too, but not just any old lunch. Today it’s first-class all the way!

Today’s journey ends at the oh-so-swish Vietage partner hotel in the resort town of Quy Nhon. Dinner’s arranged at the hotel tonight – that’s if you can drag yourself away from your ocean view villa and its private pool!!

ACCOMMODATION: Anantara Quy Nhon resort, Oceanview Pool Villa INCLUDED: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 11: QUY NHON

Fancy a lie-in today? Be our guest! In the afternoon the group will meet up for a tour around the district. Ancient buildings like the one you spotted from the train yesterday are scattered around the landscape and they’re known as Cham Towers. Built at least 1,000 years ago, some are still visited for worshipping today.

Wrap up the day with dinner at a local restaurant. The seafood is so fresh here!

ACCOMMODATION: Anantara Quy Nhon resort, Oceanview Pool Villa INCLUDED: Breakfast and Dinner

Day 12: HO CHI MINH CITY (SAIGON)

You’re out the door after breakfast to catch your flight to Ho Chi Min City. Why fly this leg, I hear you ask? (How dare we avoid the train!) Well, the reason turns out to be simple: there’s just not a lot to see along the way. And it would be a non-stop,  arduous, 13-or-more-hour stint on a train that’s at the untidy end of a very long journey.

After the laidback countryside, you’ll instantly feel the big-city energy of Ho Chi Min. It’s the business heart that drives the nation, but it has its traditional neighbourhoods too, if you know where to look. Check into your hotel and head out to explore with your guide. Stops include The War Museum and Saigon Railway Station. We’d like to say we’ve arranged a ride on Ho Chi Min City’s brand-new subway line, but completion dates have been set and reset since 2018, so let’s just wait and see. Tonight, you’re off to a unique cultural performance at the Saigon Opera House!

ACCOMMODATION: Hotel Des Arts , Deluxe room (or similar) INCLUDED: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 13: CU CHI TUNNELS

We’ve all heard about the tunnels built by Vietnamese guerrillas during Vietnam’s wars for Independence and Reunification, but to see them first-hand will take your appreciation for their ingenuity to a different level – especially when you see the smokeless kitchen, designed by an army chef back in 1951. Spending a little time underground in the tunnels will give you more insight into wartime survival in Vietnam.

After lunch, the group will head back to Ho Chi Min and the rest of the afternoon is for your choosing. Why not watch the sunset over the city, cocktail in hand, on the terrace of a nearby rooftop bar. Turtle Park is just a short stroll from the hotel too, which livens up each night when locals flock to the pop-up street-food stalls.

ACCOMMODATION: Hotel Des Arts , Deluxe room (or similar) INCLUDED: Breakfast and Lunch

Day 14: THE MEKONG DELTA

The saddest part of today is when you wake up and realise that you have just one full day remaining. But that one day will be lived to the fullest!

The tentacles of the Mekong’s River Delta reach all the way to the city and you’ll travel along one into the heart of the Delta today. Your boat chugs along while daily life in the south unfolds before you – like a movie with an artistically-perfected film set. As your boat draws into the bank along the way, and later when you travel by bicycle or rickshaw, you too will find yourself in that movie scene – meeting with workers and farmers who openly share with you about their lives. The adventure then finishes by row boat along a palm-lined canal – a most quintessential jungle experience to reach your lunch spot!

There’s enough time this afternoon for packing your case and preparing for dinner. And what a farewell dinner it will be, as you reminisce with your new-found friends and raise cheers to each other and your Vietnam adventure!

Day 15: FAREWELL FRIENDS

Swap numbers and emails at breakfast, for it’s time to farewell friends. Your airport transfer is included, and your driver will pick you up 3 hours before your flight departure. Hotel checkout is at noon.

INCLUDED: Breakfast

Prior to the payment of your full balance, the final price may change  if there is significant variation in the AUD:USD exchange rate. Our trip pricing is determined by what the exchange rates are at the time of publishing the trip.

The pricing on these trips is based on the following exchange rates:

23 February 2024 departure: 1 AUD:0.66 USD

1 November 2024 departure: 1 AUD:0.66 USD

A deposit of $1,900 is required to hold your spot. Payment can be made by credit card (fees apply) or bank deposit.

There is a cooling-off period of 2 weeks. (Applicable to all bookings made 110 days in advance.)

We have implemented a ‘lifetime deposit’ guarantee. Deposits are not refundable, but they are transferable at any time, right up until the first day of the trip.

The final balance of the trip is required 95 days in advance of the departure date. Our suppliers require upfront payment well in advance to guarantee availability.

Australians and New Zealanders require a tourist e-Visa to enter Vietnam, which will cost $25 to $50 USD. When the time comes to apply, we’ll assist with all the info you need.

Your trip has been designed by Mat & Lisa, the two cultural adventure experts behind Magnificent Rail.

Magnificent Rail is brought to you by the same team who built Patch Adventures, a boutique women-only adventure company.

Lisa is a travel guidebook author and photographer. Mat’s first rail journey was an epic adventure through Europe at the age of 13 (accompanied by parents of course.) He has since organised highly successful tours to far-flung destinations around the world. Between them, they have put together this well-balanced adventure for you.

The preparation of this trip has taken months and months of work.

Your trip will be led by local experts that have been selected by our team for their knowledge and experience.

Most of our trips have a tip kitty because many cultures have interesting and diverse rules when it comes to tips. We’ve found it to be the easiest way to combat over-tipping, under-tipping or having the tip fall into the wrong hands. Our goal is for guests to relax and know that the complexities of tipping are taken care of, on their behalf.

For your Vietnam adventure, we ask your contribution be: 3,250,000 VND (equivalent to $210 AUD) to your guide on Day 1. The kitty will be managed by your guide and distributed along the way at restaurants for included meals, hotel staff, drivers, train station porterage and services.

What is not covered is a customary tip at the end of the trip for your guide. If they’ve ensured that your trip is memorable, we recommend the following guidelines:

1,800,000 VND to 2,500,000 VND per person at the end of the trip ($120 – $160 AUD equivalent).

(Exchange Rate used – $1AUD : 15,562 Vietnamese Dong)

Overnight train On the overnight train, you’ll be allocated a soft sleeper bunk. Each compartment has 4 berths: 2 lower and 2 upper bunks. The compartments are airconditioned and open off a side corridor. They can be securely locked from the inside. You’ll be supplied with a pillow, sheet and duvet. You may keep all your bags with you, and the luggage space is beneath the bottom bunks. Shared toilets (including a sit-down style toilet) are located at the end of each carriage. There is an option to secure a private 4-berth compartment available at $112 AUD per berth.

Day train Stations have ‘train hosts’ who take responsibility for the luggage on your arrival at the station and stow the luggage onboard a luggage carriage when the train arrives. There is space for carry-on luggage above and below the seats in the carriage. It’s not a dissimilar situation to luggage when you’re travelling by plane.

So long as you have a general level of health and fitness, you’ll be fine. There’s no specific exercise planned for this trip, but there will be days when you’ll be walking and spending a lot of time on your feet. Daily activities may include city walks or a short bicycle tour on flat terrain and getting on and off various forms of transport.

All activities are optional, meaning that if you don’t feel like it, you can skip it, but it will be impossible to enjoy your trip if you’re not able to do a walking tour for a full afternoon. Unfortunately, this tour cannot accommodate people requiring walking aids.

Will we be picked up at the airport? Yes! One of our friendly team will be waiting for you in the public arrivals area of the airport. You’ll transfer directly to the hotel. The transfer is free and in a private and air-conditioned vehicle, which you will only share if there is anyone else on your flight joining the tour.

When should we arrive? Try to arrive before midday on the start day, although earlier would be recommendable. If possible, come one day early to settle in. We can organise additional hotel nights for you at cost.

Being tour operators (not travel agents), we are not licensed to sell flights. We recommend contacting your trusted local travel agent to book flights, if you’re in need of assistance.

10kg hand luggage and 23kg checked luggage.

Vietnamese cuisine is a combination of the bitter, sour, spicy, sweet, and salty flavours merged  into delicious broth and sauces, while rice comes in different shapes and textures.

Many Vietnamese dishes have been influenced by China. It is also possible to see the legacies left by French colonisation, such as baguette bread and coffee.

YES! We can accommodate vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diets no problems, or any variation of the above. Just let us know in advance. Note: this food is often very simple and may get repetitive.

Whether you are a couple, or a couple of friends, or travelling solo, our Magnificent Rail journeys will appeal to anyone who is inspired by the charm of scenic rail travel and wants to see the best of a country.

Our adventures are designed to appeal to those in their 50s, and 60s and early 70s (but of course, everyone is welcome!) Our clients are curious and active, and want to find the magic of travel again, but with some modern comforts in unique and interesting places along the way. They’ve often avoided tours in the past because they’re not attracted to being herded around in large groups.

They prefer insider perspectives and lingering longer in the right places for a deeper experience.

The "Classic Traction" tour - relaunched!

rail enthusiast tours

We are pleased to be able to re-launch this “Classic Traction” tour – originally planned a year ago – in a more concise, and cheaper form. It mainly uses a charter train, drawn by former British Rail electric locomotives of classes 86 and 87, run by the independent company “Bulmarket”, on the standard gauge, and operating on an itinerary which should still provide close to 500 kms of haulage by these iconic locomotives. On the scenic 760mm narrow gauge line from Septemvri to Velingrad, we take a service train hauled by one of the Henschel diesels which have operated this line since they were introduced in 1965, and which are now gradually to be replaced. Click here for more information on them.

rail enthusiast tours

On the narrow gauge – a section of the scenic Rhodope Mountain line from Septemvri to Velingrad – we will be using a service train, for which we have requested one of the Henschel diesel locomotives which date from 1965 and which have dominated services up until now – they are gradually to be replaced by modern power.

The Steam tour

On the steam front, Bulgaria continues to amaze us, adding steam engines to their heritage fleet, of which this tour intends to take full advantage, operating them on mostly lightly-trafficked and non-electrified lines, in what we hope will be warm, sunny late Spring weather! However chartering historic steam locomotives, even in former Eastern European countries, is an expensive business, which is why our negotiations for this part of the tour are not yet complete .

One highlight of the trip will be the use of the narrow gauge 2-10-2 tank, 609.76, on part of the mountainous Septemvri system.

Please keep an eye on these pages which will be updated as news comes in – preliminary detailed itineraries for both versions of the tour can be found below left.  There is also a booking/ registration form, which enables you to secure your place, and prompts us to keep you updated  as to progress of the tour; or you can simply email us on [email protected]

Train influencer tours sugarcane fields via ‘Sugar Express'

Sugar express train tour.

O n an unusually cool November day in Clewiston, Fla., a social media influencer and train enthusiast from Gloucester England found himself in what seemed to be a fantasy scenario … on a historic steam engine exploring endless rows of sugarcane. It sounds like the beginning of an adventurous novel. Ryan, our protagonist who lives with the challenges of autism, journeys across the pond to take part in a first-of-its-kind Train Influencer Tour and "finds his true self" along the way.

Well, except that it's not a novel. Ryan is real, the story is true. This sweet inspirational tale took shape as Ryan was part of a group of 13 "influencers" personally invited by U.S. Sugar to get a close-up, behind-the-scenes look inside the sugar industry. Via the Sugar Express - also known as steam engine No. 148 - these visitors were treated to seeing how sugarcane is grown, its sugar removed from the cane, processed, and sent to stores.

Ryan and the other influencers who journeyed from around the United States gathered in Clewiston, which is known as America's Sweetest Town . Here and in the surrounding "Glades" communities, privately owned farming company U.S. Sugar plants, harvests, and processes its crop into more than 850,000 tons of refined sugar each year. Statewide, sugarcane farming is a major economic contributor providing more than 19,000 jobs and nearly $4.7 billion in annual economic activity.

For Ryan, who has high-functioning autism , this unique learning opportunity morphed into the experience of a lifetime. Across most social media platforms, he's known as Ryan Windridge , a video creator who enjoys sharing his food experiences. Ultimately, his love of trains and semi-trucks was the catalyst for Ryan to obtain a golden ticket to a trip beyond his wildest dreams.

The journey for Ryan began with the essential assurance of having a trusted companion, James, join him to navigate the challenges it would pose. This companionship was pivotal, transforming the possibility of the trip from a mere idea into a reality.

Autism, also known as autism spectrum disorder, is a lifelong condition that affects many people in many ways. Minds develop and process information differently. The challenges often include trouble communicating and understanding what other people think and feel. Social interaction can also be difficult and make everyday tasks more stressful and new experiences unnerving.

Ryan had never been on an airplane, and to make sure he was fully prepared to fly across the Atlantic, he first took a practice flight to Edinburgh, Scotland. This was a leap into the unknown, a test of his resilience and adaptability. Despite the overwhelming newness of airport procedures and the anxiety surrounding the flight, the experience was a significant milestone, boosting his confidence and laying the groundwork for his journey to the U.S. His meticulous preparation for traveling included a thorough packing session, ensuring Ryan was fully equipped for his adventure.

Ryan, with assistance from the U.S. Sugar team, ensured he would have the necessary time and space to acclimate, which was crucial for his well-being as well as his social media content creation. The additional support and warm welcome from the team and fellow influencers helped mitigate what could have been overwhelming aspects of the trip. This allowed Ryan to feel at home and secure more easily in a foreign environment. This nurturing team approach not only eased Ryan’s transition but also enriched his experience, making it a profound and enjoyable exploration of new cultures and opportunities for content creation.

The event itself was a whirlwind of activities, learning, and networking. Highlights included a ride on the Sugar Express transported through the endless fields of sugarcane growing near the Florida Everglades. They visited ‘Sugar Mountain' and were treated to a Florida rum tasting experience along with hi-tech farm equipment demonstrations. Ryan happily accepted the opportunity to drive his first John Deere tractor. Later that day, the group enjoyed a farm-to-table dinner prepared by fellow influencer Brad Prose, Chiles and Smoke .

Looking back, Ryan says his favorite moments included riding the train and the culinary adventures at a lakeside tiki bar, where he embraced new experiences with enthusiasm.

Networking with fellow influencers and creators Brian Inman and Audra Mulkern was particularly meaningful. This gave Ryan a sense of belonging and mutual understanding within the community. The challenge of adhering to a tight schedule and deliverables, while daunting, ultimately contributed to his personal and professional growth with an evolving sense of confidence and independence.

Ryan believes the entire trip, especially facing and overcoming the challenges of new travel, has been transformative. The Sugar Express experience not only served as a catalyst for profound development, but it also expanded his horizons and solidified his aspirations and capabilities as an influencer.

This seemingly simple train tour through the fields of sugarcane and beyond helped propel this unique young man to tackle his fears, build his confidence and embrace his role as a full-time influencer. Ryan says he has a newfound purpose in life, putting him on track to become an influencer with a message that can go the distance.

And Ryan reminds friends and followers that you don't have to be an influencer to get a ride on the Sugar Express . Raisin' Cane Tours are available to the public at different times throughout the year.

Bio: Ryan Windridge, a devoted train enthusiast from Gloucester, England, captivates audiences across social media with his heartfelt rail videos. His lifelong passion for trains exudes quintessentially British charm, engaging a global audience with joy and curiosity.
