White Castle®, America's first fast-food hamburger chain, has been an inspiration to artists and bands for decades. The home of The Original Slider ®  celebrated titans of the music industry by inducting three extraordinary Cravers into its exclusive Cravers Hall of Fame.

STYX singer/guitarist Tommy Shaw, renowned concert promoter Danny Zelisko, and the late singer-songwriter John Prine join fellow legends in the Castle halls of Crave. John Prine very sadly passed away in April 2020 due to complications caused by COVID-19.

Styx and REO Speedwagon Announce Summer 2022 Tour

Styx , REO Speedwagon and Loverboy are set to join forces next summer for the  Live & UnZoomed tour.

The trek will hit 35 cities beginning on May 31 in Grand Rapids, Mich. and is presently set to wrap on Aug. 21 in Wantagh, N.Y. Tickets go on sale Dec. 10. You can see the complete list of tour dates below.

“Three years ago, none of us knew what Zoom was,” Styx's Lawrence Gowan said with a laugh in an exclusive interview with UCR. “It was just a word I remember using as a kid about a car that’s going fast. I got a call from the office saying, ‘We’re going to do a Zoom call’ and I went, ‘What the hell is that?’”

A humorous video announcing the tour, which you can watch below, finds Styx’s Tommy Shaw and REO Speedwagon’s Kevin Cronin catching up on their activities away from the road. Loverboy’s Mike Reno intermittently joins the conversation, in a fashion that feels very much like “zoombombing.”

Cronin tells UCR the upcoming dates are “very special,” pointing to a 20-year touring relationship shared by REO and Styx. “You throw Loverboy in, and that just brings it over the top.”

Echoing Cronin’s comments, Reno told UCR in a separate conversation that he’s thrilled to mount Loverboy’s first full tour since the pandemic began. “We’re so ready to get back on the road. It’s going to be a blast.”

The three groups come armed with an impressive arsenal of classic-rock favorites, but also have current projects as well. Styx will continue to highlight material from Crash of the Crown , their 2021 studio album. Reno says Loverboy has new music in the works, while Cronin is hoping to have his much-discussed memoir out to coincide with the tour.

Styx, REO Speedwagon Kick-Off Live and UnZoomed 2022 Tour with Loverboy

Tina Benitez-Eves

Updated:

Styx and REO Speedwagon have kicked off their  Live and UnZoomed  summer tour, which will run through mid-September 2022 along with special guests Loverboy.

Videos by American Songwriter

The Live and Unzoomed tour kicked off in Grand Rapids, Michigan on May 31 at the Van Andel Arena and will include a performance at the Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, concluding on Sept. 18 in Bangor, Maine.

It’s been four years since Styx and REO Speedwagon partnered for a co-headlining tour, something the two bands have been doing since 2000. “It’s just a winning combination,” said REO singer Kevin Cronin in a recent interview. Both bands, which share Illinois roots, first decided to start touring together after they both performed at a charity show.

“Not only had we never toured together, we’d never done a show together, and we (REO) have played with everybody,” said Cronin. “We booked a show in Duluth (MN) back in 2000, and it was just a powerhouse concert. The crowd went nuts and we all were like, ‘This is frickin’ great.’”

Cronin added, “We are not phoning it in. We’re not resting on our laurels. We’re always trying to get better. We’re always upping our game musically, production-wise. It’s great to have those guys, ‘cause we kind of motivate one another. We love those guys. They’re an amazing group. So, it’s a friendly competition. We kind of bring out the best in one another.”

For REO Speedwagon, 2022 marks the 50th anniversary since Cronin joined the band, replacing original singer Terry Luttrel, and making his debut on the band’s second album R.E.O./T.W.O . Along with co-founder and keyboardist Neal Doughty and longtime bassist Bruce Hall, Cronin is one of the longest-running members of the band.

In 2022, Styx is also celebrating its 50th anniversary since the band signed their first recording contract with Wooden Nickel Records on Sept. 22, 1972, and released their self-titled debut. To date, the band has released 17 albums, including their most recent Crash of the Crown in 2021.

“I can’t think of a better way of touring the U.S.A. … than with good friends we’ve known for years and performed with on many a stage,” said Styx singer Tommy Shaw in a statement. “What a great night of music this will be.”

Styx and REO Speedwagon have announced another 10 dates to their summer co-headlining tour. The 2022 run will be the frequent touring partners’ first together in four years. This time they’ll be joined by special guest Loverboy for the “Live & UnZoomed” tour that begins on May 31. It’s produced by Live Nation.

Tickets for the additional dates, announced on Feb. 11, all of which occur in September, will go on sale to the general public on Feb. 18 at 10 a.m. local time here .

REO Speedwagon’s Kevin Cronin said, “Tommy (Shaw) and I have done a number of Zoom performances together during the pandemic, and REO and Styx are ready to go get UnZoomed, and out on the road for our fifth U.S. tour together. Add our great friends Mike Reno and the Loverboy guys, and I am totally psyched.”

Watch Cronin, Shaw and Loverboy’s Mike Reno share a light moment

Styx’s latest studio album, 2021’s  Crash of the Crown , was recorded during the trying times of the pandemic. The multi-Platinum rockers are James “JY” Young (lead vocals, guitars), Shaw (lead vocals, guitars), Chuck Panozzo (bass, vocals), Todd Sucherman (drums, percussion), Lawrence Gowan (lead vocals, keyboards) and Ricky Phillips (bass, guitar, vocals). Styx have earned eight Top 10 singles on the Hot 100, beginning with “Lady” and “Come Sail Away.” Others include their #1, “Babe,” as well as “The Best of Times” and “Too Much Time on My Hands.” Their multi-platinum albums include 1981’s Paradise Theatre and 1977’s The Grand Illusion .

Formed in 1967, and fronted by iconic vocalist Kevin Cronin since 1972, REO Speedwagon ‘s non-stop touring and recording jump-started the burgeoning rock movement in the Midwest. Their landmark Hi Infidelity album in 1980 contained the hit singles “Keep on Loving You” and “Take It on the Run.” The album spent 15 weeks in the #1 slot and has since earned the RIAA’s coveted Diamond Award for surpassing sales of 10 million units in the United States.

From 1977 to 1989, REO Speedwagon released nine consecutive albums all certified Platinum or higher. Their lineup features Cronin, Bruce Hall (bass), Neal Doughty (keyboards), Dave Amato (guitar), and Bryan Hitt (drums).

Loverboy formed in 1979, when vocalist Mike Reno was introduced to guitarist Paul Dean – both veterans of several bands on the Canadian scene. Along with Reno and Dean, the band still includes original members Doug Johnson on keyboards and Matt Frenette on drums, with Ken “Spider” Sinnaeve replacing the late Scott Smith on bass.

Loverboy has earned four multi-Platinum plaques, including the four-million-selling Get Lucky . Their string of hits includes “Working for the Weekend,” and such classic rock staples as “The Kid is Hot Tonite” and “Turn Me Loose.”

Went to a show on Styx’s Paradise Theater tour in 1981, and they blew the roof off of the Civic Arena (aka “The Igloo”) in Pittsburgh, PA. After a 35+ year hiatus (hard to believe, so many years seemed to pass so quickly), I saw them at the Pier Six Pavilion in Baltimore, MD, and I gotta say, Styx had not lost a step, and had the crowd in their hands – musically, vocally, and on stage presence – they still had it all going on. I still miss Dennis DeYoung, as he contributed a lot more to Styx’s muscular sound than he gets credit for, and gets stuck with the Kilroy debate and some of their softer side, such as “Babe”, which I personally still believe is a great tune, if you remove the critique labels. In any event, while a good number of classic rock bands have been regrouping for what seems to be a fast buck and nostalgic glory, Styx soldiers on, still creating good new music, while entertaining their fans with great live performances, and not being a tribute band of themselves.

About REO Speedwagon:

Formed in 1967, signed in 1971, and fronted by iconic vocalist Kevin Cronin since 1972, REO Speedwagon’s unrelenting drive, as well as non-stop touring and recording jump-started the burgeoning rock movement in the Midwest. Platinum albums and radio staples soon followed, setting the stage for the release of the band’s explosive HI INFIDELITY in 1980, which contained the massive hit singles “Keep On Loving You” and “Take It On the Run.” That landmark album spent 15 weeks in the No. 1 slot and has since earned the RIAA’s coveted 10X Diamond Award for surpassing sales of 10 million units in the United States.

From 1977 to 1989, REO Speedwagon released nine consecutive albums all certified Platinum or higher. Today, REO Speedwagon has sold more than 40 million albums around the globe, and Cronin and bandmates Bruce Hall (bass), Neal Doughty (keyboards), Dave Amato (guitar), and Bryan Hitt (drums) are still electrifying audiences worldwide in concert with hits and fan-favorites such as “Ridin’ The Storm Out,” “Can’t Fight This Feeling,” “Time For Me To Fly,” “Roll With The Changes,” “Keep On Loving You,” “Take It On the Run,” and many, many more.

REO Speedwagon remained busy throughout the pandemic before the band was able to return to the road. Beginning in April 2020, Cronin began a series of webisodes from his home titled “Songs & Stories From Camp Cronin.” Consisting of anecdotes and acoustic performances from him and his family, the series posted 24 episodes. Cronin and members of REO gave back over the past 16 months by participating in charity events for St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Marilou & Mark Hamill’s USC McMorrow Neighborhood Academic Initiative, John Oates’ “Oates Song Fest,” “Stars to the Rescue,” Acoustic-4-A-Cure, and more. Additionally, while Cronin began keeping a journal of the band’s 2016 UK tour, he never stopped writing and recently submitted what turned out to be his life story, as well as his telling of REO Speedwagon’s history. He says, “Putting out an autobiography is risky. Once it’s out there’s nowhere to hide!” More information on his autobiography will be released shortly.

About Styx:

A new era of hope, survival, and prosperity comes calling with the release of CRASH OF THE CROWN, Styx’s new “masterpiece” studio album, which was written pre-pandemic and recorded during the trying times of the pandemic. The multi-Platinum rockers–James “JY” Young (lead vocals, guitars), Tommy Shaw (lead vocals, guitars), Chuck Panozzo (bass, vocals), Todd Sucherman (drums, percussion), Lawrence Gowan (lead vocals, keyboards) and Ricky Phillips (bass, guitar, vocals)–released their 17 th album June 18, 2021 on the band’s label, Alpha Dog 2T/UMe, which is available as clear vinyl, black vinyl, CD on digital platforms . They released more new music on September 17, 2021, THE SAME STARDUST EP, originally sold as part of Record Store Day (June 12, 2021). Available on blue 180-gram 12-inch vinyl only, featuring two brand-new songs on side one (“The Same Stardust” and “Age of Entropia”), as well as five live performances on side two of some of Styx’s classic hits previously heard during their “Styx Fix” livestreams that have been keeping fans company during the pandemic on their official YouTube page, including “Mr. Roboto,” “Man In The Wilderness,” “Miss America,” “Radio Silence,” and “Renegade.” It’s available worldwide on all digital platforms .

About Loverboy:

For more than 40 years, Loverboy has been “Working for the Weekend” (and on the weekend), delighting audiences around the world since forming in 1979, when vocalist Mike Reno was introduced to guitar hot shot Paul Dean – both veterans of several bands on the Canadian scene – at Calgary’s Refinery Night Club.  Along with Reno and Dean, Loverboy still includes original members Doug Johnson on keyboards and Matt Frenette on drums, with Ken “Spider” Sinnaeve replacing the late Scott Smith on bass.

With their trademark red leather pants, bandannas, big rock sound and high-energy live shows, Loverboy has sold more than 10 million albums, earning four multi-platinum plaques, including the four-million-selling GET LUCKY, and a trio of double-Platinum releases in their self-titled 1980 debut, 1983’s KEEP IT UP and 1985’s LOVIN’ EVERY MINUTE OF IT. Their string of hits includes, in addition to the anthem “Working for the Weekend,” such arena rock staples as “Lovin’ Every Minute of It,” “This Could Be the Night,” “Hot Girls in Love,” “The Kid is Hot Tonite,” “Notorious”, “Turn Me Loose,” “When It’s Over,” “Heaven In Your Eyes” and “Queen of the Broken Hearts.” In March 2009, the group was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame at the Juno Awards show in Vancouver.

STYX, REO Speedwagon and Loverboy Review

reo styx loverboy tour setlist 2022

“Live & Unzoomed” Tour to FivePoint Amphitheatre in Irvine, California July 16 2022 By Andy J. Gordon

Southern California Baby Boomers got a nostalgic treat as rockers from MTV’s heyday STYX and REO Speedwagon, with support from Loverboy, brought their “Live & Unzoomed” Summer 2022 tour to the FivePoint Amphitheatre in Irvine, California. Nearly 12,000 adoring fans enjoyed a beautiful summer evening at the outdoor venue as the three bands thrilled the audience with spot-on versions of their memorable hits.

Loverboy opened the show as the Southern California evening sun blazed down on the large stage. Lead vocalist Mike Reno said, “It’s great to be in front of a crowd again” as he led original members Paul Dean on guitar, Doug Johnson on keyboards and Matt Frenette on drums. Ken “Spider” Sinnaeve replaced the late Scott Smith on bass. The band played fine, tight versions of their songs and got enthusiastic support from the crowd.

Reno led the audience through a call and response during “Loving Every Minute of It.” Many fans could be seen dancing at their seats and in the aisles while the band played “Hot Girls in Love.” Matt Frenette played a short drum solo before the other band members joined in and got everyone on their feet for “Turn Me Loose.” Many in the audience sang along and Paul Dean ended it with a stunning guitar solo. They finished the set with “Working For The Weekend” as the crowd nearly drowned out Reno’s vocals.

STYX followed with a superb performance. The multi-Platinum rockers and longtime members – James “JY” Young and Tommy Shaw on lead vocals and guitars, Chuck Panozzo and Ricky Phillips on bass and vocals, Todd Sucherman on drums and Lawrence Gowan on lead vocals and keyboards were joined onstage by newest member, guitarist Will Evankovich. Gowan and Shaw both sounded amazing and the band’s harmonies were outstanding throughout the set.

The show included extravagant visual effects and all of the band’s hits. Gowan exceled early in the set on “The Grand Illusion” and “Lady.” He got quite a bit of dramatic use from his 360 degree, rotating keyboard setup – sometimes playing backwards, other times spinning it like a top. Gowan’s vocals and the other members harmonies were excellent on “Rocking The Paradise.” Shaw played an impressive guitar solo to end the song. Shaw then told the back story about the Panozzo brothers forming the band (drummer John died in 1996) and brought out Chuck Panozzo who had been in the wings up to that point.

Panozzo stayed for the rest of the set. Shaw played acoustic guitar and sang lead vocals for sweet sounding “Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man).” He introduced “Too Much Time on My Hands” by saying “this song debuted in the first hour of MTV.” The crowd probably did not remember that historical moment, but definitely enjoyed the band’s performance of the song.

The set ended with a dramatic version of “Come Sail Away” led by Gowan. The crowd sang along as the stage was filled with smoke, trippy lights and visual effects. Each of the musicians played beautifully during the instrumental portion of the song and Shaw capped it off with a scintillating solo. They did a two song encore that included the Gowan led “Mr. Robato” with Japanese themed visual effects and “Renegade” led by Shaw. The band showed off their great harmonies again with the slow opening as the song transitioned into a rousing climax. James Young provided an excellent solo before the band finished the song and their set.

REO Speedwagon received the headliner slot at FivePoint (they alternate with STYX at each of the Summer 2022 tour stops) and thrilled the audience with their performance. The band has been fronted by vocalist Kevin Cronin since 1972. The other longtime band members at the show were Bruce Hall on bass, Neal Doughty on keyboards, Dave Amato on guitar and Bryan Hitt on drums.

It did not take long for the band to get the audience singing along. Cronin was nearly drowned out when he began “Take It On The Run.” A bit later, he quipped, “I’m 70 years old and at this point in my life I thought I would know what’s going on in the world, but I don’t know shit!” He then played acoustic guitar and led the band through a still relevant version of “Live Every Moment.”

Cronin introduced Neal Doughty as the only band member to play on every album and at every show throughout the band’s history. Doughty sat at a grand piano and played superbly as the band started “Can’t Fight This Feeling.” The late section of the show included more big hits. Doughty played a trippy organ intro for “Time For Me To Fly” as Cronin sang and played a twelve string guitar. The crowd was swaying and waving their arms as Amato played a blistering solo with his double necked Fender strat.

The set ended with a spectacular version of “Riding The Storm Out.” Amato played another inspired solo and instead of leaving the stage before the encore, all of the band members stayed. Cronin moved to the piano and led them through a wonderful version of “Keep On Loving You” that segued fluidly into the show ending “Roll With The Changes.” Cronin was still playing piano and he traded sophisticated solos with Doughty on organ and Amato on his guitar as they finished the performance.

Three bands who produced many hits over the years formed a pleasing lineup at FivePoint Amphitheatre. The crowd enjoyed a long night of terrific music performed by talented artists who still love to play for the audience. That love went both ways. As long as STYX, REO Speedwagon and Loverboy continue to pump out quality live versions of their hits, crowds will keep coming to relive many fond memories.
