Rockin' Road Trip is the kind of movie you can almost hear rattling at the seams as it goes along, accumulating more and more characters like a cinematic Katamari Damacy while trying to maintain some semblance of a plot.

Two sisters, fleeing a punk stalker in Boston, gather some supporting characters and pile into a cab, taking off for their family home in North Carolina. All manner of hijinks ensue along the way, with all the tropes like stops at the mall, musical breaks and romantic misunderstandings. Before everything comes to a head at one of those old-fashioned Pentecostal revivals, that were still a thing in the eighties.

While I highly doubt this was any kind of story that someone…

We didn't know you were blind, we just thought you were cool.

Very silly 80s comedy that apparently played three times on USA Up All Night! while totally escaping my attention. It's loaded with Scandal-esque tunes, punk rockers (sorta), a trip to the mall, breakdancing, road trippin', hot tub partying, cocaine snorting pastors, and even some juggling for Jesus. It ain't great but I was charmed enough, really liked the music, and it hit a nostalgic sweet spot for me - not so much for what was shown in the film but for watching this kind of thing late at night when I was a kid.

This did something I’ve never seen before — placed scenes out of order. There’s a reaction and then conversations about the discovery of an affair between a woman’s love interest and her sister, and your like...hmm...I guess they forgot to film that part. Then 20 minutes later, she walks on in them in the scene she was talking about earlier! So weird.  Anyway, Bostonian rockers (kinda) Suicide Cherry take a road trip down south to escape an abusive boyfriend, and party all their money away, and have to play a Pentecostal TV evangelist tent revival for some bucks.  It’s pretty great with everything-but-the kitchen sink 80s (van life, mall makeovers, break dancing, punks, etc) and then just kind of gives up at the end

5 stars for being filmed in my hometown and featuring my mom as the extra in the red dress who walks in front of the camera during the first mall parking lot scene. Minus 3 stars for being a bad movie.

It was cool to see familiar landmarks in a different time, but the first half was incredibly dull overall. During the second half the movie starts making more of a statement on the area’s pious hypocrites and it got a little more interesting. I asked my mom “Were people around here really that uptight back then” and she said “Oh lord yes”.

Overlooked (unless you watched USA Up All Night) rock n roll film. Martin falls for Samantha, whose sister Nicole is the lead singer of Cherry Suicide (who sound like early Scandal). Nicole and Samantha knock out Ivan, Nichole's psycho abusive stalker ex (with a bad Klaus Nomi haircut) and steal $5000 from him. They go on the run to the small Southern town they're from with Martin, Martin's blind pal Wally, and guitarist Curtis. They buy a van, have lots of family drama, and battle televangelists. Lots of great Athens Georgia bands on the soundtrack including Guadalcanal Diary (who also appear), Love Tractor, and Pylon. (If you've seen the documentary INSIDE OUT, you know the bands). One of my professors was friends with the director, William Olsen. This was... weird. It's the most "80s" movie I've seen. There's a part where some kids randomly start breakdancing in a mall. I kind of liked it, but I wouldn't call it a very good movie. It is pretty entertaining at times. Some lines were so cheesy or unexpected I couldn't help but laugh.

For a movie that's supposed to be a musical, the sound design is not good. There were many scenes where I couldn't understand what the characters were saying because some background music was playing too loudly or the actors were mumbling. There's no captions so that wasn't an option. They also used some really out of place cartoony sound effects a couple of times.
