Book Ruby Wax: I'm Not As Well As I Thought I Was Tickets at Ambassadors Theatre Official Box Office
After a complete sell-out run of a 40-date national tour, ruby wax's rawest, darkest, funniest and most compelling stage show yet announces its first west end dates at the ambassadors theatre. as well as the show, this unique performance includes an exclusive, frank and personal q&a with ruby and the chance to meet her after the show..
Based on her bestselling book of the same name, I’m Not As Well As I Thought I Was sees Ruby reflect on a series of life-changing journeys she undertook in search of meaning – swimming with humpback whales; embarking on a 30-day silent retreat in California; joining a Christian monastery – that ended up taking her in a very different direction. After ten years, Ruby ’s depression resurfaced, and at the start of 2022 she was admitted to a mental health clinic.
“ The original idea behind this show was based on the extreme journeys that I wanted to take in order to find an antidote to living a frazzled life. Along the way I wanted to find meaning, peace, happiness – the stuff we’re all chasing. However, after some transcendent experiences, I ended up in a mental institution. Obviously, I didn’t find what I was looking for. ” - Ruby Wax
Directed by Alison Summers , the show sees Ruby subvert our stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding mental health and happiness in her most honest, compelling and vulnerable performance yet.
Highlighting the importance of community and connection around mental health, Ruby encourages audience members to participate in a live Q&A in the second half of each performance, giving people the opportunity to share their experiences with others. A meet and greet will also take place after the show, with copies of her latest book for sale.
Ruby Wax is a successful comedian, TV writer and performer of over 25 years. Ruby additionally holds a Masters’ degree in Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy from Oxford University and was awarded an OBE in 2015 for her services to mental health. The star wrote on social media: "I’m taking my new book, I’m Not As Well As I Thought I Was, on tour as a stage show later this year... I spent much of 2022 going on what I thought were life-changing trips. Experiences that would hopefully give me what I’m always searching for: meaning, a point to my life, peace, happiness. You know the lyrics. "Some experiences changed my life for the better, and some helped me end up in a mental hospital, which was not expected. Imagine my surprise. "My book, and the stage show, is a road trip ricocheting from the sublime into the insane, and I’m inviting you all along for the ride. Tickets go on sale Friday 10th March."

Ruby Wax’s guide to surviving the 21st century
Catherine Jones talks to comedian Ruby Wax about her Sane New World tour

She's had some well-charted ups and downs in a career spanning more than 30 years. But Ruby Wax’s latest venture definitely sees her on a high.
“I’ve never had a job where I’m this happy, never,” she reveals. “I know that sounds weird, but until something goes really wrong... and now it will, because I’m talking to you!
“So far it’s really pleasurable, because even if I wasn’t funny, I think it’s interesting. I’m not going ‘love me, love me!’ which I used to.”
The actress, comedian and, latterly, academic, is heading for Liverpool next week with her Sane New World tour.
But if you’re expecting the Ruby of yesteryear, the red-haired, red-lipped, big, bold and entertainingly brash quizzer of everyone from Fergie and Imelda Marcos to the Spice Girls, then you’re in for a surprise.

While she’s still quick with a quip, both about herself and others, this is more reflective Wax than of old.
It turns out the American’s trademark forthright, feisty exterior hid a secret – increasingly debilitating and acute bouts of depression, which eventually led her to end up checking herself into an asylum.
But in confronting her mental health issues it has opened up a new avenue in life for the mum-of-three who decided she wanted to get to the bottom of how the brain works.
First she enrolled at Regent’s College in London to study psychotherapy and counselling, before in 2009 studying neuroscience at University College London.
From there she took a course in ‘mindfulness’, what she has described as a type of ‘psychological intervention’ which was being pioneered at the time by Oxford-based psychologist Dr Mark Williams.
And from there, she went to to Oxford to work on an MA in mindfulness-based cognitive therapy.
Her previous stand-up show, Losing It, dealt with her own experience of clinical depression.
And while it played in the West End, it got its first try out in very different surroundings.
“I did it in mental institutions, so they loved me, I couldn’t say anything bad or insulting because they knew I was of the tribe,” Ruby smiles. “So I eased in really easily. And then I think as long as you’re funny, everything is forgiven.”
And so to Sane New World, based on her best-selling book of the same name, in which the 61-year-old hopes to offer ‘a manual on how to survive the 21st century’.
“It’s really for the normal mad,” she explains. “I already did a show about depression, or mental illness, so this is for everybody.
“I’m trying to put forward stuff that I believe in, but coated in comedy, otherwise you’re just giving a lecture. And I went to Oxford and wrote my dissertation, so I just spun it into comedy, to kill two birds with one stone.
“It’s harder than just being funny about cats!”
We’re are overwhelmed by the demands of the 21st century, she says, which is “too hard, too fast, and too full of fear.
“We just don’t have the bandwidth. Our brains can’t take so much information in a world where we’re bombarded by bad news and force-fed information.
“Why is everyone burning out?
“It’s the phobia of being left out. Where did that start? And that I need to be a winner on X Factor with the talent of a toothpick. Where did I get that idea?”
For Ruby, the answer to everything lies in mindfulness, a technique that aims to calm the mind by recognising what is your own particular trigger – in her case the internal monologue of self-criticism – and tackle it when it starts.
Recently she wrote about a dinner which found her sitting between Professor Brian Cox and cerebral comedian Robin Ince, where her inner monologue told her she’d be rumbled “as a complete idiot”. I tell her I felt the same way before calling her to talk about the mind.
“It’s our imagination,” she explains. “Because of course, I know stuff he doesn’t. But he’s not going to ask me about it. But I do know I’m impressed out of my pants. But I’m not even in that league. If somebody really tested me, I’d just pretend to faint!
“And then during Robin Ince’s show I started crying, because it’s stuff I studied, except he’s doing it 2,000 miles an hour and I was upset, although I think I might be a little cuter than him! He’s a genius. I hope he has problems that’s all. Otherwise it’s too much for me!”
Ince is due at this year’s Liverpool Comedy Festival.
Ruby meanwhile appears at the Playhouse next Wednesday, and then she’s back in October to announce the winner of the Mental Health and Me competition run by Writing on the Wall and the Liverpool Mental Health Consortium.
“I love Liverpool,” she volunteers. “I loved it because of the Beatles, and now I like it because you’ve built it up, it doesn’t look like it’s been bombed.”
Back in early 60s America, the young Ruby loved the Beatles so much she and her friends would “call the operator in Liverpool, so we could hear the accent – then we’d hang up on her.
“We were so excited.”
- Ruby Wax: Sane New World is at the Playhouse on September 17 at 7.30pm.

Ruby Wax announces more tour dates
About how she sought happiness... and ended up in a mental health clinic
Ruby Wax has announced another 32 dates for her tour, I’m Not As Well As I Thought I Was, based on her memoir of the same name.
In it, she recalls a series of life-changing journeys she undertook in search of meaning – swimming with humpback whales; embarking on a 30-day silent retreat in California; joining a Christian monastery.
But it did not stave off her depression, which resurfaced, and at the start of 2022 she was admitted to a mental health clinic.
She says: ‘The original idea behind this show was based on the extreme journeys that I wanted to take in order to find an antidote to living a frazzled life.
‘I wanted to find meaning, peace, happiness – the stuff we’re all chasing. However, after some transcendent experiences, I ended up in a mental institution. Obviously, I didn’t find what I was looking for.’

Ruby Wax: I’m Not As Well As I Thought I Was
Jun 13, 2024
DATE / TIME: Thursday, June 13, 2024 7:30 pm
After a complete sell-out first run in 2023, Ruby Wax’s rawest, darkest, funniest and most compelling stage show yet announces brand new dates for 2024, thanks to enormous demand.
“The original idea behind this show was based on the extreme journeys that I wanted to take in order to find an antidote to living a frazzled life. Along the way I wanted to find meaning, peace, happiness – the stuff we’re all chasing. However, after some transcendent experiences, I ended up in a mental institution.
Obviously, I didn’t find what I was looking for.”
‘I’m Not As Well As I Thought I Was’ is Ruby’s first tour show in four years following her critically acclaimed, sell-out tour, ‘ How To Be Human’.
