How Strict is Ryanair's Baggage Allowance?

ryanair travel luggage size

We've all been there: packing in a hurry, rushing to the airport, stuffing our carry-on with as many items possible and praying its bulging contents are miraculously overlooked by the check-in people at the airline gate. More often than not, you're stuck either paying some ridiculous overweight baggage fee, or frantically repacking your baggage on the airport floor, deflecting judging stares from your fellow passengers. Let it be said, it pays to come prepared, especially when flying  Ryanair . The popular budget airline   famously has one of the strictest baggage allowances in Europe, and it has recently gotten even stricter. Additionally, even if you do stick to their rules, you may still be penalized for tiny infractions.

Luckily, a little research goes a long way, and in this article, we will show you step-by-step how to avoid baggage fees while flying with Ryanair.  You can also see how their baggage allowance rules compare with other European airlines here . Heed our warnings, lest you  get denied boarding or have to pay more fees than expected.

Size Is Everything

The IATA (International Air Transport Association) standard hand baggage allowance is 56 x 45 x 25 cm (22 x 18 x 9.8 inches), but Ryanair allows just 25 x 40 x 20 cm (9.8 x 15.7 x 7.8 inches). These smaller dimensions mean that your favorite carry-on luggage could be far too large for a Ryanair flight, forcing you to check the item and pay a gate-check fee.

If you're insistent on keeping your items with you onboard, you can purchase a Priority and 2 Cabin Bags ticket upon booking, or at the check-in counter for an extra 6 to 20 euros. This allows passengers to board in the priority line with a small personal bag (dimensions 40 x 20 x 25cm as listed above) and a roller bag fitting the dimensions of 55 x 40 x 20cm (21.6 x 15.7 x 7.8 inches), weighing 10kg (22 pounds).

If you pay for two cabin bags and one is larger than the 55 x 40 x 20 cm (21.6 x 15.7 x 7.8 inches) allowance, your bag will be refused at the boarding gate. In some cases your bag will be placed in the cargo hold and you will be charged a 50 euro oversized bag fee. In other cases you will have to figure out how to get your bag to your destination on your own.

For Less Hassle, Carry a Hardcase

Sometimes even when your hand baggage  does  meet the size and weight requirements, the airport staff still charge you for having oversized hand luggage. This usually happens when using a soft-sided bag. Many Ryanair check-in desks ask you to place your bag into a metal frame to ensure that it is the correct size. Soft bags however, like duffel bags or weekenders, can sag when stood upright. Even if a bag is the correct size and not overfilled, if you have to squeeze that bag into the frame, airline personnel might charge you for an oversized bag.

One solution to this potential problem would be to buy a hard case, which (if it starts off within Ryanair's size limits) will always fit the metal frame perfectly, no matter how full it is. But hard suitcases often weigh more than their soft counterparts, drastically eating into your 22 pound (10 kg) allowance. Which is better depends on what makes traveling the easiest for you, but for the most painless check-in process, go for a hard suitcase or soft luggage that uses a very stiff fabric.

Research, Research, Research!

Ryanair has the reputation of being the cheapest airline available in Europe, but you never know until you check your travel dates and see what kind of offers are available. Who knows, you might luck out! You can   compare prices on flights with ticket aggregators like Priceline, Google Flights, or Kayak, and see what the least expensive option is.

We've also put together a little cheat sheet on how to circumvent other Ryanair fees and penalties .

Ryanair’s hand luggage policy: Everything you need to know

Ryanair offers some of the cheapest flights in Europe, but exceed its baggage allowance and you could be slapped with a hefty fine. The budget airline changed its luggage policy twice in 2018, updating size restrictions for carry-ons, so it’s always best to check before ramming your suitcase with flip flops and hoping for the best.

READ NEXT: The best cabin luggage and carry-on bags

Read on for everything you need to know about Ryanair’s cabin baggage policy, so you don’t get caught out at the ‘baggage gauge’ (you know, that foreboding suitcase measurer you see dotted around airports).

What is Ryanair’s baggage allowance today?

Ryanair presently only lets non-priority customers take one small bag on board free of charge, which must fit underneath the seat in front of you. Dimensions are a wee 40 x 20 x 25cm, so if you’re going away for more than a couple of nights – or unless you’re headed to Ibiza with a carry-on of swimwear only – holidaymakers might want to think about buying more baggage allowance.

If you purchase Priority boarding, you’ll be able to take a larger cabin bag with you too; this has a dimension restriction of 55 x 40 x 20cm and a 10kg maximum weight restriction. Prices start at £6.

How much does Priority Boarding cost and what does it include?

Priority Boarding starts from £6 and for this sum (and upwards) you’ll be able to bring two cabin bags: the 40 x 20 x 25cm personal bag and the 55 x 40 x 20cm 10kg wheelie bag. Plus, you’ll be able to board the plane via the Priority Queue with both of your bags in tow, freeing you up from the monotony of the baggage reclaim carousel.

How can I avoid Ryanair’s hand luggage fees?

Put simply, pack light. Dimensions of 40 x 20 x 25cm are tight, but they’re not impossible to work with. If you select – and wear – your only pair of shoes wisely, make sure to layer up on the plane, and buy your mini toiletries at the airport, you can save a great deal of space. Capsule wardrobes are a smart idea too: make sure each item you pack is classic and versatile – a white shirt can be dressed up or down with the right accessories, and goes with pretty much anything.

Meanwhile, Ryanair’s website shows light travellers some of the ways they can use their allotted 40 x 20 x 25cm – which includes rucksacks, chunky laptop bags or briefcases, and handbags on the larger side.

What charges should I be aware of?

Oversized cabin baggage will, where available, be placed in the hold and incur a £69.99 fee. If there’s no room in the hold, cabin baggage could be refused at the boarding gate. There is a bag gauge available by the Bag Drop desk, so you can ensure your bag is the right size before going through security – although ideally you want to be measuring and weighing up at home to avoid the risk.

2. Aerolite Lightweight Hard Shell Cabin Suitcase: The best for paid Ryanair carry-on luggage

Price : £48 | Buy now from Amazon

If you’re thinking of paying to bring a bigger suitcase on board with you, the Aerolite hard shell wheelie is a great option. It looks and feels a lot more premium than its price tag would suggest, and is available in a range of exotic colours including Wine and Rose Gold.

The hard shell exterior means you won’t get caught out with a bulging bag at the baggage gauge too. Simply pack your loot into this 55 x 35 x 20cm suitcase and breeze through your boarding gate. Our one small bugbear was that the handle felt a little short for our 5ft 4in reviewer – so it might not be the most comfortable option if you’re particularly tall.

Ryanair Baggage Allowance: Everything You Need To Know

Don’t let high airline prices keep you from traveling to exciting places. Founded in 1985, the Irish carrier Ryanair is popular for its low-cost flights within Europe and Morroco.

But to make the most of your travel budget with Ryanair, you must consider their baggage policy.

Another smart way to travel economically is to plan for the right luggage types and sizes to pack as efficiently as possible. Once you have the right bags, you can use Ryanair’s baggage policies and tips to plan a great trip at the lowest price possible.

Ryanair Baggage Allowance for Carry-on Bags

Ryanair passengers are allowed to board the cabin with one carry-on and one small bag. The carry-on luggage must fit under the seat in front of you or in the overhead bin. Carry-on luggage must be at most 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm (22 in x 16 in x 8 in). It must not weigh more than 10 kg (22 lbs).

Your small carry-on (or your handbag) must be no bigger than 35 x 20 x 20 cm (14 x 8 x 8 in). There is no weight restriction for this piece, but it must fit under the seat in front of you.

Keep in mind that bulkhead seats (seats divided by certain areas in the plane by a wall) do not have under-seat storage.

Ryanair Baggage Allowance for Checked Bags

Ryanair passengers can check in up to two bags. Each bag must weigh no more than 20 kg (44 lbs) with the applicable checked baggage fees. Reserve checked baggage online at the time of booking or by contacting a Ryanair call center four hours prior to the scheduled departure or 40 minutes before the flight departure time at the airport.

Baggage allowances vary by flight and by season with the low season between January 5th-May 31st and October 1st-December 20th. The high season is between June 1st-September 30th and December 21st- January 4th.

Ryanair Baggage Prices

For rows 1, 2 (D, E, F), and 16-17 (with extra legroom), Baggage fees are 30 euros per flight. Front seats (rows 2 (A, B, C)-5 baggage fee is 19 euros per flight. For Standard seats (rows 6-15 and 18-33) the fee is 15 euros per flight. For mandatory family seats, the fee is between 4-6 euros.

These prices are for economy passengers who book a Standard or Flexi Plus flight. If you book a Plus or Family Plus flight, checked baggage will be included in your airfare.

Keep in mind that baggage fees for each piece of luggage increase when you pay via the call center or wait until you’re at the airport. For example, at the time of booking, the fee for a 10kg bag will be 12 to 25 euros, and post-booking the fee jumps to between 17.99 and 50 euros. Avoid the extra charge by purchasing online before your departure date.

Ryanair Policy on Excess Baggage

If you exceed the checked baggage allowance for personal bags (20 kg or 44 lbs) you will be charged the current rate on the day of travel. The excess baggage fee is currently 20 euros per kg. Additionally, checked bags have linear dimensions of 158 cm ( 62 ins) or less.

Ryanair’s Policy on Sports Equipment & Musical Instruments Sports equipment and musical instruments are considered as hold luggage along with checked baggage but must not exceed 20 kg (44 lbs) or 30 kg (66 lbs) for bikes.

Tips to Avoid Baggage Fees on Ryanair

Consider adding Priority boarding and 2 cabin bags starting at a fee of 6 euros. Then you can bring one more bag with a maximum weight of 10 kg in the overhead locker. You’ll also be boarding first, so the overhead will likely be manageable.

  • Get two 20 kg bags per booking and a 10 kg bag per person with the family plus option.
  • Repurpose your handbag as Ryanair hand luggage.
  • If you don’t have a reserved seat, get to the airport early.
  • Pool your checked baggage with a friend or partner.
  • Pack travel-sized cosmetics.
  • Look for Ryanair extras such as an extra legroom seat or additional luggage.
  • Plan your trip for between January 5th and May 31st or October 1st to December 20th.

Ryanair Cabin Bag Size: What Every Traveller Should Know

Ryanair is a popular budget airline for short European hops, but they require strategic packing for cabin size. Rather than frustration at the airport, you will need to be familiar with the Ryanair cabin bag policy before you fly.

This article will cover everything you need to know about Ryanair cabin bag size, including the dimensions, weight restrictions, and what you can and cannot bring on board.

Ryanair Cabin Bag Size: An Overview

Isn’t it so satisfying to see your pack fit?

So you have booked your budget-friendly Ryanair flight, and now it's time to tackle the packing. Let’s explore the Ryanair cabin bag size and regulations to choose a backpack or suitcase strategically.

What Is A Ryanair Cabin Bag?

A Ryanair cabin bag refers to the luggage that passengers are allowed to bring into the cabin when travelling on an aeroplane . Ryanair has specific rules and regulations regarding the size and weight of cabin bags to ensure efficient boarding and maximise cabin space.

Ryanair Cabin Bag Size And Allowances

In short, Ryanair has two different cabin bag sizes:

  • Small personal bag : This bag must fit under the seat in front of you and must not exceed the dimensions of 40 x 20 x 25cm / 15.75 x 7.87 x 9.84 in. No mention of a weight limit.
  • Large cabin bag : This bag can be stored in the overhead locker and must not exceed the dimensions of 55 x 40 x 20cm / 21.65 x 15.75 x 7.87 in and a weight of 10kg / 22lb. You will need to purchase this bag separately for the price of €6-20 via the Priority & 2 Cabin Bags bundle.

These are Ryanair's maximum cabin bag size, including any handles or wheels. That's about the size of a small backpack or shoulder bag.

If you want to bring more than these amounts, you will need to pay for checked bag fees at least 2 hours before flying. The maximum Ryanair checked bag restrictions are 20 kg / 44lb in weight and 80 x 120 x 120 cm / 31.5 x 47.24 x 47.24 in size dimension.

Note: Visit the Ryanair Bag Policy for the latest updates.

Ryanair Hand Luggage Rules To Follow

Knowing Ryanair hand luggage allowances not only brings a breeze through security but also helps you avoid hefty fees.

How Strict Is Ryanair With Hand Luggage?

Ryanair has a reputation for being notoriously strict about hand luggage sizes. Their cabin areas are smaller than other cabin-allow sizes , with very little wiggle room, so fitting just a few oversized bags can cause major delays as crew members attempt to shuffle things around.

ryanair cabin bag size - CabinZero

And while staff may have seemed lenient with reduced flights during the pandemic, things are getting back to normal now. If your bag is even a centimetre too big, you will likely be forced to check it into the hold. Ryanair reserves the right to levy a fee of up to €11 per kilo at the gate if your bag is non-compliant.

So it is really worth double- and triple-checking the dimensions before heading to the airport. And consider packing slightly smaller than the maximum limits just to be safe. The gate staff don't generally provide measuring tools, so it's up to you to ensure your bag fits.

What Can You Take In Hand Luggage On Ryanair?

Travelling light is key when flying with Ryanair due to their strict cabin bag restrictions. Passengers are permitted one small personal bag to fit under the seat, measuring no more than 40 x 20 x 25 cm. This could be a backpack, handbag, or laptop case. Priority boarding customers may also bring one slightly larger bag of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm to place in the overhead locker.

You can pack almost everything you need for your holiday . This includes outerwear like coats and scarves, as well as travel essentials such as passports, books, and electronics. Duty-free purchases after security are permitted if sealed in a tamper-evident bag. Drinks and snacks for the flight are fine in moderate quantities.

Although you can bring vapes and cigarettes on a plane, you can not use them. Also, liquids must be 100ml or less and contained together in a single clear resealable plastic bag no larger than 1 litre.

However, what is not allowed in hand luggage Ryanair? There are certain restricted and prohibited items you cannot place in your carry-on. Anything flammable, sharp, or explosive is an obvious no-go for safety reasons. Explosives, substances and devices capable of, or appearing to be capable of, causing serious injury are also prohibited.

Mind what you pack for Ryanair hand luggage.

What Hand Luggage Can You Take On Ryanair?

Provided it meets size restrictions, here's a rundown of the main types of bags you can bring onboard as carry-on luggage:

  • Backpacks : Make sure to remove any accessory straps that could push it over the size limit when loaded.
  • Trolleys : Check measurements very carefully, as collapsible handles tend to add extra bulk.
  • Suitcases : Only very small wheeled suitcases or "cabin-sized" ones will fit in the overhead bins.
  • Messenger bags : Perfect for lightweight trips as they don't take up much space.
  • Totes : Foldable totes can squash down well, but check that the dimensions are accurate.
  • Laptop bags : Just one slim laptop bag is generally fine in addition to your main cabin bag.

You're also allowed one personal item, like a small laptop bag or purse, in addition to your carry-on. Always keep valuables like phones, wallets and passports on your person for security.

Ryanair Baggage Allowance & Fees

Let's round out with the lowdown on hold baggage policies and pricing:

Booking and Checking In With Ryanair

The best place to purchase Ryanair tickets is through their website, as this is where you will find the lowest fares. Be sure to book well in advance for the cheapest rates.

The online booking is straightforward via the Ryanair website. Photo by ryanair.com

Follow these steps:

  • Step 1: Go to the official Ryanair website at ryanair.com
  • Step 2: Enter your travel details, including your destination, travel dates, and number of passengers.
  • Step 3: Select your preferred flight from the available options.
  • Step 4: Choose any additional services, such as baggage allowance or seat selection.
  • Step 5: Enter your personal details and payment information.
  • Step 6: Review your booking and confirm your purchase.

You can also check comparison sites like Skyscanner or Google Flights, but Ryanair's direct site will provide all cabin bag and boarding pass options during checkout.

After choosing the destination and buying your tickets, there are two options for you to check-in.

Online check-in opens 60 days before the scheduled departure time if you have purchased an allocated seat. This is the best way to save time waiting in queues at the airport.

You can check in online at www.ryanair.com and print your boarding pass on the A4 page singly. Keep in mind to check in at least two hours before your departure time. Or, if you have a Flexi Plus ticket, you can check in at the airport for free.

The other option is to check in at the desks. Remember that the check-in counters shut down precisely 40 minutes prior to the scheduled departure.

To ensure a smooth experience, have all necessary documents, such as your ID and booking confirmation, readily available. Moreover, familiarising yourself with the airport layout is also important to locate the check-in counters efficiently. Be prepared that queues may form, especially during peak travel times, so arriving well in advance is advisable.

There is a very strict request that a backpack should fit under the seat i front of you, but why nothing is mentioned about the dury free bags? Today at my flight I couldn‘t place my bag due to the big duty free pack of the person seating at 9E. The flight attendant said he will take care after the boarding has been completed but didn‘t. Looking forward to your reply. Br, Daniela

I was asked to pay an extra £70 at the boarding gate, I measured my bag with a tape rule and it was 55cm, i tried measuring the iron thingy Ryanair uses for carry on bags with the same measuring tape, to my surprise it was 53cm on the yellow line which makes it 2cm below the allocated space…..I demand an explanation on why it was 2cm below the original cm.

Ryanair’s luggage policy can be strict and confusing, so it’s important to know the exact size and weight requirements before flying.

Passengers are allowed a small bag for free, but it must fit under the seat in front and meet specific size and weight requirements.

For those needing more space, Ryanair offers a Priority and Two Cabin Bags option, which includes a small bag and a larger trolley bag with a weight limit of 10 kilograms. Hold luggage options are also available but with smaller size allowances than other airlines.

Ryanair 2023 Baggage Allowance

Hand Luggage

Passengers who purchase a Ryanair ticket receive a small bag for free, which must be able to fit under the seat in front of them.

However, it is crucial to ensure that the bag meets the size and weight requirements, as Ryanair is stricter than most other airlines.

Ryanair Cabin Baggage

The free bag provided is essentially a small rucksack or handbag, with specific size requirements of 40 cm in length, 20 cm in width, and 20 cm in depth.

It is important to note that the width allowance of 20 cm is smaller than most other airlines, which can catch passengers off guard. For those who need to bring more than just a small bag, Ryanair offers a “Priority and Two Cabin Bags” option.

This option allows passengers to bring a second larger bag that must meet specific size requirements of 55 cm in length, 40 cm in width, and 20 cm in depth, with a weight limit of 10 kg.

This can be stored in the overhead lockers.

  • Length: 40 cm = 15.75 inches (approx.)
  • Width: 20 cm = 7.87 inches (approx.)
  • Depth: 20 cm = 7.87 inches (approx.)

Passengers must be careful to ensure that their luggage meets these requirements to avoid additional fees.

The cost for the “Priority and Two Cabin Bags” option starts at £6 and can vary depending on the flight duration and demand.

Overall, it is essential to be aware of Ryanair’s strict luggage policies and to plan accordingly to avoid additional fees and complications during travel.

Ryanair 2023 Baggage Allowance

Priority and Two Cabin Bags

Passengers who require more luggage space can opt for Ryanair’s Priority and Two Cabin Bags option.

This option includes a small bag that fits under the seat in front and a larger trolley bag. The larger bag must meet specific size and weight requirements, including a maximum weight of 10 kilograms.

The larger bag must have a length of 55 centimeters, a width of 40 centimeters, and a depth of 20 centimeters. It should also include the wheels and handles in the measurements.

Book your next flight through expedia.com

Passengers who choose this option will also receive priority boarding.

  • Length: 55 cm = 21.65 inches (approx.)
  • Width: 40 cm = 15.75 inches (approx.)

The cost of this option starts at six pounds for short flights but can be higher for longer flights and depending on demand. Passengers should be mindful of the weight and size restrictions to avoid additional fees.

It is important to note that Ryanair’s size restrictions for the larger bag are smaller than other airlines. Passengers should also be aware of the weight restrictions and plan accordingly to avoid additional fees.

Overall, the Priority and Two Cabin Bags option is a suitable choice for passengers who require more luggage space and are willing to pay for the convenience.

The smaller rucksack must fit under the seat and the larger bag can be placed in the overhead luggage hold and does not need to be loaded into the plane’s undercarriage hold.

Hold Luggage

Ryanair’s hold luggage is divided into two options: 10 kilograms or 20 kilograms.

The 10-kilogram bag costs between £12.99 and £35.99, while the 20-kilogram bag costs between £20.99 and £59.99, depending on the length of the flight and the destination.

ryanair travel rules

Ryanair’s hold luggage is smaller than other airlines, with a maximum size of 120 x 120 cm.

Passengers should note that a weight limit of 20 kilograms is strictly enforced, with an additional charge of £9 per kilogram for any excess weight.

It is important to plan ahead and weigh your luggage before arriving at the airport to avoid any additional fees.

Passengers traveling with sporting equipment such as bikes or skis will need to pay for space in the hold. The rules and restrictions for sporting equipment vary, so passengers should check the Ryanair website for specific information.

Parents traveling with infants can bring an extra baby bag weighing up to 5 kilograms, measuring 45 x 35 x 20 cm, as well as two items of baby equipment such as booster seats, pushchairs, or travel cots.

These items are free of charge for infants between eight days and 23 months old.

Passengers should keep in mind that Ryanair is strict about luggage size and weight limits. Planning ahead and checking the rules and restrictions on the Ryanair website can help avoid any additional fees or complications at the airport.

Suitable Bags

Here is my suggestion for a suitable hand-held cabin bag and carry on set

Handheld & Carry on bag

This beautiful deluxe two-piece expandable luggage set is manufactured with a heavy duty 600 denier fabric. This set is perfect for the serious and experienced traveler! This luggage set includes an upright and a flight tote bag with locks and keys.

  • Tote bag: 13.5″x 11″x 5″
  • Upright: 20″ x 13″ x 7.5″ (with wheels)
  • Inline skate wheels and stability bar
  • Ergonomic padded top and side grip handles
  • Fully lined

Additional Luggage for Infants

For parents traveling with infants on Ryanair, the airline allows an extra baby bag of up to 5 kilograms, measuring 45 by 35 by 20 centimeters.

This bag can be brought on board and placed under the seat in front of the parent. Additionally, parents can bring two items of baby equipment free of charge, including booster seats, pushchairs, or travel cots.

It’s important to note that these additional items can only be brought for free if the child is classified as an infant, which on Ryanair means they are aged between eight days and 23 months. If the child is older than two and requires their own seat, they are subject to the same baggage allowances as adults.

  • Can You Take a Skateboard as Hand Luggage on Ryanair?
  • Is Ryanair A Good Airline?

Parents should be aware that the size of the baby bag allowed on Ryanair is smaller than on other airlines, and it’s essential to adhere to the dimensions and weight restrictions.

If in doubt, it’s recommended to check the Ryanair website for the latest rules and restrictions and to weigh individual items of luggage before traveling.

Overall, Ryanair’s allowances for infants’ additional luggage are relatively generous, but parents should plan ahead to ensure they comply with the airline’s policies and avoid any additional fees.

Luggage for Children Over Two

Children over two years old, are entitled to their own seat on the plane and can bring their own little bag to go under the seat in front of them. However, parents will need to pay for any additional luggage beyond this small bag.

ryanair flight

The size requirements for the small bag are the same as the free bag that comes with the ticket, which is 40 cm in length, 25 cm in width, and 20 cm in depth.

If parents need to bring more luggage, they can purchase the priority and two cabin bags option, which includes a larger bag that can be stored in the overhead compartment and a small bag that can be placed under the seat in front of them.

The larger bag must not exceed 55 cm in length, 40 cm in width, and 20 cm in depth, and must not weigh more than 10 kilograms. Parents should be mindful of the weight limit and pack accordingly to avoid additional fees.

It is important to note that children over two years old are not entitled to any additional baggage allowance beyond their own small bag and any additional luggage will need to be paid for.

Parents should plan ahead and book in advance to avoid any last-minute fees.

Overall, Ryanair’s luggage allowances for children over two years old are similar to those for adults, with the exception of the free additional baby bag for infants.

Parents should review the size and weight requirements carefully and pack accordingly to avoid any additional fees.

Sporting Equipment

When traveling with sporting equipment on Ryanair, it is important to plan ahead and check the rules and restrictions on the website.

Ryanair charges extra fees for any sporting equipment that won’t fit in a suitcase, and the fees vary depending on the weight of the equipment.

If you are bringing in big sports equipment like bikes or skis, it is recommended to weigh your individual item and check the restrictions on the website. Ryanair is strict about weight limits, and any excess weight will result in additional fees.

It is important to note that Ryanair’s 20-kilogram hold bag is smaller than most other airlines, so it is crucial to pack efficiently and avoid exceeding the weight limit.

Planning ahead and booking in advance can help avoid last-minute check-in fees.

Practical guide

  • Do Airlines Prefer Hard Or Soft Luggage?

In conclusion, Ryanair’s luggage policy is strict, necessitating careful attention to avoid additional fees. Passengers are permitted to bring a complimentary small bag that must fit beneath the seat in front of them.

This bag must adhere to precise size criteria: 40cm length, 25cm width, and 20cm depth.

For those who need more space, Ryanair offers a “priority and two cabin bags” option, which allows passengers to bring a small bag and a larger trolley bag with specific size and weight requirements. The larger bag must not exceed 55cm in length, 40cm in width, and 20cm in depth, and must not weigh more than 10kg.

Ryanair personal item size: 6 perfect Ryanair 40x20x25 bags

If you’re flying with Ryanair, everyone gets a 40x20x25cm item of luggage you can take on board at no extra fee.

It doesn’t matter what luggage you’ve paid for (if any!) Every passenger gets a Ryanair personal item size bag which is 40cm x 20cm x 25cm.

This bag needs to fit under the seat in front of you and shouldn’t really go in the overhead lockers (unless the plane is really quiet and there’s plenty of space!)

Whether you’re hoping to squeeze everything you need for your whole trip into your personal item size bag (which is definitely possible for short breaks!) or you’re just using it for the few bits and bobs you’ll want to access during your flight, here are some great 40x20x25 bags suitable for the Ryanair ‘free’ personal bag.

The Travel Hack Backpack

Cabin Max Travel Hack Travel Bags for Women | Ryanair Cabin Bags 40x20x25 | Laptop Backpack - Black

  • A fashionable and space-saving womens Travel Backpack cabin size which fits under the seat. It can hold laptops up to 13", serving as a convenient option for weekend trips too.

  • Fits the Ryanair 40x20x25cm' free' underseat hand luggage rules. Flies for free on all other known airlines. Lightweight design weighs just 0.6kg.

The original and the best in my personal opinion! The Travel Hack Backpack is perfectly sized for the Ryanair 40x20x25 bag. It’s surprisingly roomy with handy pockets to organise your belongings and ensure you can find everything you need during stressful airport encounters.

It’s also a great bag to use once you reach your destination and need a ‘day bag’ for busy days out and about.

  • A spacious main compartment
  • Internal mesh pockets to separate and organise belongings
  • Two water bottle holders
  • A slim front pocket that is perfect for your passport and documents
  • A padded laptop pocket at the back (can double up as an anti theft pocket when you arrive)
  • A top pocket for smaller items like your phone and keys
  • Ideal for use as a day bag when you arrive

If you prefer to roll your Ryanair personal sized item then I highly recommend the Cabin Max Narvik 20L. This tiny suitcase has lots of handy pockets so you can keep everything organised and easily access your necessities during the flight.

The 10 Best Carry-Ons To Take on Ryanair and Other Budget Airlines

author image

See recent posts by Kyle Valenta

If you’ve ever flown Ryanair, easyJet, Southwest, Spirit, or any other budget airlines, you know that size  really  matters when it comes to your carry-on luggage. Each airline has strict size requirements for carry-on bags—and airline staff will absolutely measure your bag if it looks just a hair too big. If it is oversized, you have two options: Put on as many articles of clothing as you can to make your bag shrink, or check it for a hefty sum. You can avoid all that—and keep your flight as cheap as possible—by planning ahead and making sure that your carry-on is the right size before you fly. To make that process a little easier, we’ve rounded up 10 pieces of carry-on luggage that are within the smallest carry-on size requirements for a variety of popular budget airlines. Read on for our favorites.

All of the products featured in this story were hand-selected by our travel editors. Some of the links featured in this story are affiliate links, and Oyster may collect a commission (at no cost to you) if you shop through them.

The Best Carry-On Luggage for Ryanair Non-Premium Passengers and Spirit Airlines:

Ryanair and Spirit Airlines are notoriously strict about their carry-on policies. If you’re flying on Ryanair’s cheapest tickets — which are it’s non-premium fares—you are limited to one small carry-on bag. Yes, you read that correctly. We’re talking one bag that’s about the same dimensions as a regular backpack. While that’s a tough amount of space to work with, it can be done. Spirit Airlines is the most restrictive U.S. airline when it comes to carry-on baggage allowances. At the time of writing, Spirit only allowed about eight liters of space more than Ryanair. With that in mind, the same bags in this section should be considered your go-to when traveling on Spirit as well. We’ve picked a few great carry-on bags that can help you maximize space, plus one must-have accessory if you’re planning on traveling out of a no-fee-sized backpack.

1. Sea-to-Summit Compression Bags

Yellow and green options of the 1. Sea-to-Summit Compression Bags

If you’re going to pack for any trip on Ryanair’s non-premium tickets or on Spirit Airlines, you will absolutely need to maximize your packing space. With that in mind, grab Sea-to-Summit’s easy-to-use compression bags, which come in an array of space-saving sizes. Unlike vacuum-style compression bags, these roll shut and buckle closed, compressing soft items (like clothing) down to a third of their original size.

2. Thule Accent Backpack, 20L

Two views of the 20L Thule Accent Backpack

Thule makes great, hardy gear for travelers and commuters on the go. This roomy bag has a spacious main compartment that’s perfect for your compression bags, as well as a laptop pocket, side pockets for water bottles, and smaller pockets for odds and ends (eliminating the need for bulky toiletry bags or dopp kits).

3. Osprey Daylite Plus Daypack

Two views of the Osprey Daylite Plus Daypack

If you’re after a more lightweight backpack option, the roughly 1.3 pound Osprey Daypack should be your pick. Again, it has a generously sized main compartment and is made from flexible material, making it ideal to use with compression bags or packing cubes. It also has handy side sleeves for water bottles to avoid purchasing water in-air, keeping you hydrated on the cheap.

4. Herschel Supply Co. Thompson Backpack

Two views of the Herschel Supply Co. Thompson Backpack in light grey

With its rolltop-inspired design, the Herschel Thompson Backpack gives you a ton of main compartment space and a buckle enclosure that will help you maximize your packing. Compression bags will come in handy here to keep that main compartment organized. The backpack comes in an array of neutral colors, making it a great bag for city exploring when you’re back on the ground.

5. Fjallraven Kanken Classic Pack

Two views of the Fjallraven Kanken Classic Pack in yellow

The iconic Fjallraven Kanken backpack is a perfect choice for those who prefer a more hipster-ready look. It comes in dozens of colors, too, so you can pick the one that best suits you. It’s tiny, yes, but if you’re only gone for a day or two (and pack sparingly), you’ll do ok. You’ll also look cute carrying this around any city as a daypack!

Carry-On Luggage for easyJet, Southwest and Other Budget Airlines

Other budget airlines are a bit less restrictive—including Southwest, easyJet, and JetBlue, though you should always check rules about carry-on baggage, as they vary from airline to airline. While most budget airlines will allow you one reasonably sized piece of cabin luggage, you will be subject to often stringent weight requirements, so make sure you’re not overpacking. The below options range from larger backpack style carry-on bags to more traditional hard-shell suitcases. However, always check the requirements for your specific budget carrier, as certain airlines are more restrictive than others.

1. Cabin Max Oxford Carry On Luggage – Backpack

Two views of the Cabin Max Oxford Carry On Luggage – Backpack

The brand Cabin Max is dedicated to creating bags that fit the carry-on size restrictions of budget airlines around the world, so it’s a great idea to head to it for your budget-flight luggage needs. We’re partial to the Oxford backpack, which is the exact size that Southwest permits as a carry-on. It opens like a suitcase, making packing and unpacking a breeze. Is its rectangular shape a little awkward? Sure. But it maximizes space extremely well.

With handles, a crossbody strap, shoulder straps, and a three-sided zipper closure, this is a multifunctional pick that can handle anything that your trip throws at it.

Key Takeaways

  • Carry-on size limits vary by airline. Most U.S. carriers allow bags up to 22 x 14 x 9 inches, but international limits can differ significantly.
  • Many airlines have a rule about maximum linear dimensions. That means that when you add a piece of luggage’s length, width, and depth together, the sum can’t exceed a specific number.
  • Checking specific airline policies before traveling is crucial to avoid unexpected fees or having to check your bags at the last minute.

Whether you’re flying domestically or internationally, every airline has its carry-on luggage size restrictions. There is no one-size-fits-all approach, so you need to check your airline’s specific policy before traveling to ensure your carry-on bag isn’t rejected with potential additional charges.

Below, you’ll find a helpful chart detailing the most popular airlines’ carry-on restrictions, including the size and weight of a standard carry-on, and whether this varies due to the cabin you’re traveling in. We’ve also covered checked luggage sizes and allowances , too.

Don’t forget that there are many ways to avoid paying for baggage fees such as carry-ons and that’s what we cover in our in-depth article.

Unless specified, the maximum weight allowance is across your standard carry-on luggage and personal item combined.

Best Carry-On Bag For Ryanair – Squeezing Into 2024!

Ryanair has taken minimalism to the sky. They shook up the industry with discount rates by separating the flight cost from the baggage fees. If you truly travel with pretty much nothing, you can find flights from Paris to Morocco cheaper than catching a train to Nantes.

Their cheap rates provide easy opportunities to get abroad and hook millions of budget travelers each year. Who can say no to a $10 direct flight, right? Unfortunately, if you want to travel with more than a change of clothes or two, your luggage will likely cost more than your ticket!

Low-cost airlines gotta sneak in those lost earnings somewhere, usually at the customer’s expense. I can respect that about Ryanair. Unlike other, more expensive airlines, they don’t pretend like they aren’t trying to squeeze money out of you every step of the way. And at least some of it is optional.

Baggage fees are a natural place to start. It seems fair enough until you start reading the fine print. Carry-on-size definitions on Ryanair are much smaller than you’d expect. Nobody in their right mind would call this small size reasonable, but that is clearly not the goal here. Every time you fly with them, the seats get smaller, and the cushion wears thin. We’re only a few months away from gate agents breaking out the measuring tape in the name of a 30-euro bag fee.

You always think you can get away with traveling with less, but only a few select travelers can spend more than a day or two living out of one free carry-on bag. Three days of peace and music is doable with one carry-on-sized container, but sometimes you’ve got to crumble and accept the extra charge. I mean, if you’re going to have a better time and you can afford it, it’s hard to argue against it.

Ryanair knows that and continues to crank up the argument.

Allow us to introduce you to the rebuttal. These backpacks are at the frontlines of discount travel, packing more storage options into less space and helping you march off the plane and straight out the door, 34 euros poorer and in Amman.

These carry-on bags are savvy travelers’ responses to rules that got too strict. While no backpack on the market can magically turn 40 liters of storage into a 30 x 20 package, these bags store more than their size and maximise the storage space they do have.

You’ve got to plan ahead to beat budget airline companies and keep your costs down. It starts with the right carry-on, so let’s dive into the qualifications before looking at the most qualified backpacks.

What is the Ryanair Carry-on Bag Size?

Small. Really, really small!

Especially if you hadn’t flown with them since 2018 when the carry-on size decreased. Each ticket now only comes with one personal bag that can fit underneath the seat in front of you. The listed dimensions of that bag are 40cmx20cmx25cm or roughly 20 litres of storage. Ouch!

The good news is that Ryanair does allow for a modicum of flexibility. Those numbers can represent any three angles of your bag, so a suitcase that is 40 cm long is just as acceptable as a backpack that is 40 cm tall, as long as the other two edges stay within the lines.

Compare the size of their hand baggage-only fares to Luftansa’s (55cm x 40cm x 23cm), and British Airways (40 x 30 x 15cm), and the good news turns bad. The key to Ryanair’s infamous policy is their strict interpretation of the definition of small.

A bag that you can get away with on other airlines will get stopped at the door at Ryanair. Travelers who don’t want clean underwear or folks heading to the beach might be able to stretch their free carry-on bag out to a week, but realistically, 20 liters plus the clothes you’re wearing on the plane will get you through a long weekend.

ryanair travel luggage size

For an extra fee, you can travel with that carry-on bag plus a 10 kg piece (55cm x 40cm x 20cm.)  This service is called paying for “priority,” and it comes in a limited supply. Anything else, or anything bigger, will be heading underneath the cabin.

Don’t think you’re out of the woods just for upgrading. This 10 kg piece will usually top out at around 40 liters, which can be a tight squeeze. It’s the bare minimum most one-bag travelers would recommend, but there is still a chance staff might pull you up with a 40-liter backpack stuffed full.

That’s why the secret of great one-bag travel is multiple bags. Priority gives you a larger cabin bag in addition to your free personal item. That means with the right backpack combination you can walk on the plane with 55 litres of storage, which is more than enough to get you through a month in most tropical places.

Not every trip ends at the beach. Sometimes to get where you’re going, you’ll need a bit more gear, like for camping or winter trips for example. Each passenger can pay to check up to three 20 kg pieces of luggage too.

If you know you’ll have to check a backpack, doing it online will always be cheaper than being stopped at check-in. And they will check. Gate agent’s eyes light up with dollar signs at the sight of dirty hiking bags stuffed to the brim.

Every backpack on our list will qualify as a carry-on bag for Ryanair, some in the overhead compartment, and some as a free personal item. Be sure to check before you travel if you need to upgrade.

Ryanair opened up flights to a bunch of different destinations to draw in tourism. We have created this expert guide on the top 10 Ryanair destinations . It details who this location is ideal for, the best time to visit, and (most importantly) what you can actually get up to while there.

How Much is a Ryanair Carry-On Bag?

You’ll want to bite the bullet early on all luggage purchases, both to make sure there is still room in the priority class with access to overhead bins and also to avoid the higher fees that come with same-day luggage checking.

The cold hard truth is that if a gate agent decides your bag is too big, there’s not much you can do to plead your case. You might get away with it a time or two, but eventually, you’ll have to buy some extra luggage and it’ll cost you a fair bit more.

Nomatic Travel Pack

The Priority Pass is Ryanair’s solution. They make things sound fancy by emphasizing your two free cabin luggage options, but really it’s the one free bag plus one 10kg case. You’re paying for an extra backpack and an earlier boarding group.

A lot like mushrooms, priority is best purchased online! Even if you call a Ryanair call center instead of booking your bags online, the prices will be higher. Nothing compares to the fees they’ll place at airport ticket desks though!

A good rule of thumb for anything involving Ryanair is to take care of things before you get to the airport. Thankfully, they finally stopped charging us for not having our tickets printed out, but there are still plenty of extra fees the company looks to tack on while checking you in.

The fees are real, and they are enforced. Going by carry-on size restrictions, Ryanair is literally the worst.

The Best Bags For Ryanair Flights

There’s carry-on ready, and then there is Ryanair ready. The budget ticket seller makes no secret of their passionate enforcement of draconian bag requirements. Just like the black market adjusting to the police increasing cell phone monitoring, some companies have made it their mission to stay ahead of the rules.

The choices are split between free bags that may have to go in the overhead compartment and carry-ons guaranteed to fight under tight seats.

Just remember, the art to travelling carry-on only with Ryanair is not just the bag itself, but learning how to properly pack your bag for flying on the chicken bus of the skies!

We’ll show you a few backpacks that bring the power back to the passengers!

As well as being globally carry-on ready, it’s also got a phenomenal design, great organization, and it has HUGE amounts of space. Tortuga might be the company that best knows how to create space within their bags so you can pack the compartments to your heart’s content.

Note that there isa 40L version available but in order to spare you all the wrath of European airlines like Ryanair, we suggest using the smaller 30L version.

I loved taking this pack around Europe as it was accessible, comfy to carry and fit all my gear. One thing I noticed about this pack is how durable and strong the zippers feel.

Peak Design – Travel Pack 30L

Peak Design travel backpack review

  • Dimensions (CM): 53cm x 34cm x 18cm
  • Capacity (L): 27l extendable to 33l

The Peak Design Travel Pack 30L is designed with carry-on travelers in mind, with its well-thought-out design. Offering 30 liters of space, it is perfectly sized to comply with Ryanair’s carry-on restrictions, yet spacious enough to carry all you need for a short trip.

tbbteam - Peak Design Travel Pack 30

Its weatherproof shell offers protection against unexpected spills or rain, providing peace of mind during transit. Additionally, the quick zip access ensures that everything inside the bag is readily accessible, which can be a lifesaver during security checks or when retrieving items during the flight.

WANDRD – PRVKE Lite

WANDRD PRVKE Lite

  • Dimensions (CM): 40 X 28 X 14 cm
  • Capacity (L): 11-16
  • Price ($): 239

WANDRD’s flagship PRVKE model can work as a carry-on on most airlines, but to get onto Ryanair they had to think smaller. The Lite bag takes things down a size while still bringing cushioned, organized storage to a solid amount of gear. You’ll still have plenty of divider options and even a laptop compartment, all in a great under-seat size that’s kind on the shoulders too.

PRVKE’s dimensions are right at the edge of the baggage policy, getting under the legal limit without giving up a single Centimeter more. You might have to answer a few tough questions if the bag is stuffed full, but with enough patience, you can stuff this solid bag inside any steel cage. The roll top feature means you can throw your hoody or a few extra bits back in once you arrive at your destination.

If you’re looking for a similar but slightly larger setup, then check out the WANDRD PRVKE 31L instead.

Stubble & Co – The Roll Top

Stubble & Co Roll Top Mini

  • Dimensions (CM): 41 x 28 x 12
  • Capacity (L): 14
  • Price ($): 155

The Roll Top is a commuting specialist that works great whether your route is underground or in the air. The same sleek features that help this bag fight snugly over your shoulders in an amphibious march to work will also help the bag slide under the seat. The direct access laptop pocket means once your bag gets beneath the seat, you won’t have to zip it open until touchdown.

If you’re feeling like flirting with the limits even further, Stubble & Co, has a larger roll-top backpack with an extra 6 liters of storage, all while only adding on 3 centimetres of length, width, and height. Leave an extra t-shirt behind, and you can likely still sneak it onboard.

If it’s the hipster style you’re looking for and the Stubble & Co Roll Top doesn’t quite hit the mark, then check out our round-up of the best hipster backpacks on the market for some more ideas.

Osprey – Transporter Panel Loader

Osprey Transporter Panel Loader

  • Dimensions (CM): 47 x 33 x 23
  • Capacity (L): 25
  • Price ($): 165

The Transporter’s dimensions are a dangerous game. If you fully stuff the Panel Loader full, There’s a good chance this backpack can get flagged at the gate. Worst case scenario, it will still easily fit in the overhead compartment, and thanks to its lack of stiff joints, you might be able to squeeze it under a seat or two with a bit of elbow grease!

Osprey switched up their usual operating procedure, creating a super flexible shell that can collapse down to a small stature. While there is still plenty of comfort against your spine, Osprey skipped the Airscape back panel on this bag, greatly increasing shrinkability. An internal water bottle pocket finishes the job off, resulting in a sleek backpack that can fit in tight spaces.

If you’re looking for some different options when it comes to Osprey bags, maybe you’ve decided to check in some bigger luggage, then check out our guide to the best Osprey bags on the market .

Osprey Quasar 26L

  • Dimensions (CM): 48 x 30 x 27
  • Capacity (L): 26
  • Price ($): 120

The Quasar marks the start of our backpacks that flirt a bit with the overhead compartment.  Take advantage of the compacting side straps, and you can still easily pack this bag for a weekend trip, squish it under the seat with a 100% success rate.

The 26-liter bag has a few great exterior features that make the bag feel both bigger and smaller. A durable mesh cord allows you to strap on a sweater or oversized tools, and a top bungee connection helps the bag squeeze tightly together to slip into smaller spaces. When it’s time to ease your bag into the gate side metal box, remove your sweater and fit right in. I have personally taken this bag as my “under seat” bag on countless flights and never had any problems including with Ryanair. Check out my Osprey Quasar review .

Tropicfeel  – SHELL

Tropicfeel Shell Backpack

  • Dimensions (CM): 51 x 30 x 19
  • Capacity (L): 20-40
  • Price ($): 249

This backpack takes on many different forms. Fully loaded, it’s practically a mobile closet with a detachable hanger, toiletry kit, a tech pouch, and a camera cube. Unfortunately, at maximum size, you’ll also need priority. Start deconstructing things, and suddenly you’ve got a  great bag to beat Ryanair.

You can squeeze things down over 6 liters smaller to get through security and then unfurl a kangaroo pouch perfect for souvenirs. You can even add and remove hip straps to affect the bag’s overall size further. The adaptability of the bag means you can slim down for your flight and open it back up once you arrive.

No matter which setting you’ve employed, it’s got a tough waterproof exterior and organised interior that come together for a great backpack.

Not sure if the SHELL is right for you, why not have a look at the TropicFeel NEST instead, it’s still 16L and has similar expandable features.

Cabin Max – Memphis 30

If offers 24L internal capacity with built in packing compression system, a nice padded laptop/tech compartment, 3D packing pockets, water bottle pocket and organiser compartment with key clip and then a discrete rear ‘secret’ pocket. Padded backpack straps with adjustable chest strap and sunglasses loop. Stubble & Co – Adventure Bag

The Stubble & Co adventure bag

  • Dimensions (CM): 55 x 38 x 24
  • Capacity (L): 42

Once you land, this bag really shows out. Stubble & Co’s new model comes with features from across the aisle. You won’t find many backpacks with a reflective, stormproof cover and a padded laptop compartment/secret pocket combo. The new streamlined shape sits like a jetpack on your back, ready for takeoff.

Mahi Leather – The Dixie Boho

Mahi Leather Dexie Boho

  • Dimensions (CM): 30 x 29 x 10
  • Capacity (L): 9
  • Price ($): 168.50

Dixie Bohoes bounce from Texas to Tennessee, strapped up in leather bags and bangles. Mahi leather is along for the ride with one thumb stuck out by your side. When some other materials break down, this full-grain Leather won’t even crack. This bag only bends and morphs with time.

Brass fittings and YKK tell the world this company is dedicated to taking care of the little things and letting the leather do the talking. The genuine suppleness of the leather takes on different shapes through use, further whistling dixie. High-quality materials and focused detail work are a great combination to provide genuine craftsmanship no matter where the value fare takes you.

The best thing about the bag though, it’s easily below the size limitations for Ryanair carry-on luggage, so you’ll never have to stress.

Like the look of this leather bag? Check out the best leather bags on the market for some more options.

Aer – Go Tote 2

AER Go Tote 2

  • Dimensions (CM): 38 x 28 x 13
  • Capacity (L): 17.5
  • Price ($): 89

The Go Tote is a sneaky way to get on board with a whole lot of storage. Gate agents aren’t used to providing an over-the-shoulder bag with the same scrutiny as backpacking backpacks. While it’s a few liters lighter than those more traditional models, it’s also guaranteed to qualify as a free option on any flight.

Those fools have no idea! Below the surface, this is no ordinary tote. Thanks to nifty organization options and a laptop compartment, this bag can keep your gear organized and fit in a whole load more than you might imagine. It has six separate pockets ready to outscore any Jansport. That proficiency takes this bag places… and does it without having to pay any extra baggage fees!

Looking for a tote-style bag but not too sure about the Aer? Have a look at our guide to the best messenger bags for a few more ideas.

AER – Go Sling 2

AER go sling 2

  • Dimensions (CM): 24 x 13 x 5
  • Capacity (L): 0.8
  • Price ($): 59

This bit of gear is the backpack equivalent of a swiss army knife. If you pack smart and dress loosely, you can get some storage for free with this close-fitting chest piece. The slim storage capacity is chock full of mesh, zippers, and dividers that split up your gear and keep your cords untangled. Most importantly, it does all that while fitting underneath your clothing.

If they’re going to treat us like cattle, we’re going to turn this game into Animal Farm. Sneaking an extra bag onboard exists on the outskirts of the rules, sort of like counting cards at a casino. If you get caught, you might get invited into the backroom and tossed around, but ultimately you’ll just pay a small fee.

Sling-style bags are a great option when it comes to carry-on travel as they’re small, fit most of your valuables and often go undetected. If you’re in the market for one but want a few more options then check out our roundup of the best sling bags for a few more ideas.

Final Thoughts on Finding The Best Ryanair Carry on Bag

You didn’t spend a month searching Skyscanner for the year’s cheapest getaways just to piss it all away on extra luggage fees. To really save money on your next trip, carry-on bags are the way forward. Spending a bit of extra money on the right bag now will save you money on each and every flight.

Right now, you can find 67 flights on Ryanair’s website that are cheaper than the price to check a 20 Kg bag. The right carry-on bag can cut your travel budget in half. That sounds great, but you’ll be surprised how challenging it is to cram things down to 15 Liters.

Osprey Farpoint 40L Backpack

If your bag is on the edge of glory, we’d prescribe paying for priority upfront and half a Xan after you get through security to ensure a smooth travel day. Even if you’ve already taken the pledge and splurged for a checked bag, you should still consciously choose your carry-on.

A good carry-on bag will ensure everything you need stays by your side and with airlines potentially scrapping liquid rules soon, it’s an even more convenient way to travel.

Budget airline or Eithad, there’s a real chance things get lost along the way. While your checked bag does the legwork, your carry-on bag should store a few days of gear, so you don’t have to spend the first afternoon of your vacation bikini shopping.

Ultimately, there is no carry-on bag that has truly hacked Ryanair. Every bag that you can fit underneath the seat had to make some serious sacrifices to make it happen. The bags on this list soften the blow while still maximizing storage to give you a fighter’s chance.

Most of the luggage listed above is still too large in at least one dimension to qualify as a RyanAir ‘personal item’.

I just spent a long time trying to find a backpack which definitely falls within the 40x25x20 limit. I found a few that were 42 or 43 high; these ought to be acceptable to all but the most zealous of RyanAir staff – e.g. the Deuter Race 8 backpack, Montane Trailblazer 8 and the Rab Tensor 10 – but these are all 8-10 litres, and still potentially going to be rejected.

I eventually came across the Fjallraven Kanken Laptop 13 (the other varieties of Kanken are just a bit too big one way or another, but this one is 35x25x16). So far this is the largest backpack I have found which is definitely within the RyanAir restrictions – combined with an Osprey Farpoint 40 as a 10KG carry-on, this gives me a pretty useful amount of storage for longer trips, and a nice daypack for when out and about. Probably enough for two-three days somewhere warm on its own.

Another trick for reducing luggage (if you’re not traveling in the winter) is to layer up your clothes when flying. They will only see the top layer going through the gate. As soon as you’re on the plane head to the washroom and remove the outer layers. Also always wear your heaviest and largest footwear on to the plane.

You should review luggage vests or jackets so people can eliminate luggage completely. Granted it’s for a small demographic but its important when you absolutely can’t check luggage for whatever reason. These things have massive pockets allowing people to bring an enormous amount of stuff on to the plane. Probably one could even convert a raincoat for this. As soon as you’re on the plane you can put it in an overhead bin. You could also bring a stuff sack for it to fit into. This is truly packing on another level.

Another area that people rarely consider is traveling with a bicycle and the box it has to be packed in. Sure you have to pay for the box but there is often a LOT of space in that box and they don’t seem to care what it weighs so unless you’re transporting heavy stuff it can be utilized for a lot of items. This along with the luggage vest would be interesting. You can get bike boxes for free in most cities as bike stores just throw them out. Ideally it would be made out of lightweight plastic but that’s just more thing someone can steal. Though it could be used to protect the bike if you’re taking the bus/train within the country. Local transportation can be rough.

Airline with smallest hand luggage allowance named - and it's not Ryanair or easyJet

Hand luggage allowances can vary by airline - but which offers the most and least?

With summer travel at its height over summer, thousands of people will likely try to cram as much as they can into their hand luggage to avoid expensive add-ons.

Hand luggage allowances, also known as cabin bags or carry-on bags, can vary by airline in terms of size and weight restrictions. But which airline is going to give you the most bang for your buck?

According Skyscanner, Norwegian Air only allows one cabin bag, without a personal item. This single bag must be 30x20x38cm and cannot weigh more than 10kg - so if you want to bring more on, you’d be best advised to wear your bulky items like coats and boots.

Ryanair is next, with the size for a cabin bag is 40x20x25cm. Although the checked limit is small, there's no weight restriction. However, you can only bring one bag onboard with no secondary personal item allowed.

The airline with the largest cabin bag is Aerlingus - the only guidelines for a cabin bag is that it must fit under the seat in front and there is no weigh limit on it, according to Skyscanner.

Virgin Atlantic is also generous with its cabin bag allowance, with a limit of 56x36x23cm and a weight of 10kg.

British Airways also allows two cabin bags with limits of 56x40x23cm and 40x30x15cm respectively - the only weight limit is that you must be able to lift them into the overhead lockers without doing damage to yourself or anyone else, making a good option for over packers (as long as you’re strong.)

Meanwhile, many airlines also have different rules for checked luggage. Ryanair's has a checked bag allowance - and it’s not free either. Bags with this budget airline must be 81cm x 119cm x 119cm, and weigh below 20kg. Additional bags will cost between £25 - £40 for each extra 20kg. There’s also a limit - you can only have three checked bags with Ryanair.

However, if you want to bring your life with you on holiday there are a number of airlines that have no restrictions on the size of your bag. These are Tui, Vueling, Turkish Airways, Jet2, Flybe, Aerlingus or Air Asia.

Of these seven airlines, only Air Asia allows a weight limit of up to 40kg - the heaviest out of all the listed carriers, however the prices for this might depend on which route you’re flying.

Our travel experts reveal the best under-the-seat cabin bags to get around pricey hand luggage rules

CHOOSING the right bag for a flight is an art - and one that's difficult to get right.

If you're preparing for a flight but are unsure of which cabin bag to use, we've got you covered.

It's hard to know which backpack to choose for your upcoming flights

Here is a list of Sun Travel's favourite cabin bags, ranging from budget bargains to stylish statement pieces, all of which will make your trip worry-free.

Whether you're looking to stuff all your luggage into a backpack, avoiding having to pay for excess baggage, or if you just want something practical for a long journey.

The following bags have all been tried and tested by The Sun's team of travel experts.

SZLX Large Travel Backpack

The SZLX travel backpack is a go-to for Ryan from The Sun's travel team

Ryan Gray - Travel Reporter

I'm always a little sceptical about Tiktok "hacks" given that a lot of them aren't really that effective.

But, when it was time for me to get a new backpack, I thought I'd at least see what was out there - and I was pleasantly surprised by one recommendation from the online travel community.

The SZLX Large Travel Backpack comes with plenty of useful features to ensure you can bring everything you might need for your trip.

However, it's worth noting that the medium and small versions are the ones that fit within hand luggage size requirements.

The large, or "expansion", versions are too large and could get you in trouble at the gate.

Its three main compartments include one large one for the bulk of items, a small one at the back for laptops and tablets and even a wet bag compartment at the front, to store wet towels or soggy swimwear.

It even has its own external USB charging port that connects to a power bank, so phones can still be used while charging from the bag.

I've had the bag for over a year now and have taken it on multiple trips during that time. In most of them, including for some week-long getaways, it has been the only bag I've needed.

It's always had more than enough space and has never let me down once. I'd highly recommend it.

Find it on Amazon from £29.99.

Narwey duffle bag

Hope Brotherton was able to pack a week's worth of stuff into her Narwey duffle bag

Hope Brotherton - Travel Reporter

As I closed the zipper, I felt impressed with just how much room the Narwey duffel bag actually boasted.

I had lined the bottom of my bag with my microfibre travel towel .

Then I paired down my clothes to the bare minimum, including two dresses, two pairs of tights, three t-shirts, a pair of trousers, underwear, socks and a pair of pyjamas.

I folded them all into a packing cube, which helped to optimise space.

Even after all of that, I still had room for a tightly-packed liquids bag, a shampoo bar, soap, a toothbrush, as well as two make-up palettes and make-up brushes.

Then, on top of all of that, I was able to slot in a curling wand, a hair straightener, a kindle, a pair of sunglasses, a pair of reading glasses, a kindle, a power bank, a plug adaptor, and several charging cables.

As I boarded the flight, I felt confident that I didn't need to be part of the stampede of holidaymakers fighting for overhead luggage space .

On the plane, the bag slotted underneath my seat with ease and I was left with plenty of legroom too.

Find it on Amazon from £9.99.

Longchamp Shoulder Bag

Kara chooses the stylish and practical Longchamp shoulder bag

Kara Godfrey - Deputy Travel Editor

I always love to pretend that if I look smart enough, I'll get a free upgrade on a flight.

It's yet to happen, but it does mean I've found the perfect underseat bag that looks smarter than most.

Longchamp has forever been known for being a versatile bag, being made of canvas so you don't have to worry about leaking drinks or toiletries.

But this also means you can fit a lot in them, and I've done more than a weekend break fitting everything I needed.

It's even great if you are taking it just for the plane and don't need it on holiday, as they fold so small they almost fit in your pocket.

Sure, they aren't the cheapest to buy brand new - but you can get them for a fraction on eBay.

Find them in John Lewis for £120, or on eBay.

The Everywhere Bag

Sophie relies on the mix of practicality and stylishness from the Away Everywhere Bag

Sophie Swietochowski - Assistant Travel Editor

Have you ever purchased something so useful that it leads you to wonder how you ever spent so many years living without it? That's how I feel about my 'Everywhere' bag from Away.

I'm always complimented on either its chic style or practicality.

It’ll set you back a steep £155, but every feature has a purpose.

There's a convenient outside pocket that's perfectly sized for a passport, meaning you don't have to rummage around in search of it.

At the opposite side there's a flap that allows you to slip it over a suitcase handle so that it fits neatly on top.

Elsewhere, there's a padded pouch for a laptop, a few open pockets inside for toiletries or travel docs as well as an inside zipped pocket.

What I most appreciate is the outside zip that extends down both sides of the bag so that it can open more widely when you're packing.

It's compliant with most airlines' hand luggage restrictions, including easyJet, and because it's made from sturdy leather, you won't have any difficulty trying to wedge it into the luggage checkers at the airport.

This is one for obsessive organisers like myself, although if you're looking for something that you can cram a week's worth of clothes into (to avoid shelling out for luggage), you may want to opt for something with fewer pockets that'll give you more room.

Find the bag on Away Travel from £155.

Virgin Atlantic Travel Tote

Lisa swears by the Virgin Atlantic Best of British tote bag

Lisa Minot - Head of Travel

This lightweight, soft, squishy travel tote was designed by Fenella Smith especially for Virgin Atlantic - part of their range of travel products celebrating the best of British design.

I’ve found the sturdy bag invaluable for everything from work trips to beach breaks.

Made from 100 per cent recycled canvas with a vibrant Virgin red cotton lining, it’s roomy enough for all the holiday essentials and comes with a detachable padded laptop pouch for your tech that can be removed once you’ve arrived at your destination and want to switch to beach mode.

Crucially, it’s very light so doesn’t give me back ache when I’ve filled it with all my essentials and its wide straps are comfy on the shoulder as well as easy to wrap round a suitcase.

Find the Virgin Atlantic Travel Tote on the Virgin Atlantic website from £75.
