Safari Isn’t Responding, Keeps Crashing or Freezing, Fix

Safari is not working as expected? This article explains what you can do if Safari doesn’t respond, and keeps freezing or crashing on your Mac. You may also see the rotating color wheel or “spinning beach ball”. A lot of users are also reporting that Safari crashes when they open the Preferences pane.

Safari is a great and stable browser. However, performance-related problems (freezing or crashing) may still occur rarely.

You may also see “Safari quit unexpectedly” messages.

An unresponsive Safari may cause your Mac to freeze also.

If you are experiencing this issue, please try the steps below. After each step, try to open Safari to see if your problem is fixed.

Make sure that your Mac has the latest versions of the macOS software . Safari is included with macOS. Updating your Mac also includes updates to Safari. Here is how:

• If you are using macOS Mojave or later: Go to System Preferences and Software Update. Alternatively, you can click the Apple menu > About This Mac > Overview and then Software Update. And if there is an update available, click the Update Now button then follow the onscreen instructions.
• If you are using macOS High Sierra or earlier: Open the App Store on your Mac and click Updates.

2. Empty Cache in Safari

Emptying all Safari caches may fix your problem. It is a good idea to do this in Safe Mode because Safe Mode clears your Mac’s system cache and may repair issues. This is also a good idea because if your experience Safari crashes when you want to open Safari Preferences. Please follow the steps below:

• Turn off your Mac.
• Turn on your Mac and immediately press and hold the Shift key.
• Keep holding the key until you see the login screen. Then release the Shift key and log in.
• Your computer is now in Safe Mode. Your computer may be slower in Safe Mode, this is normal.
• Now go to the Finder.
• From the menu bar, click Go and Go to Folder (or press Command, Shift, G keys together).
• Enter the following and click Go:

• Delete files by dragging them to the Trash.
• Now exit Safe Mode by restarting your Mac normally. Do not press the Shift key.
• When your Mac turns on, and then try to open Safari to see if it now crashes or freezes.

3. Safari Extensions

You may be having this problem because of third party extensions you may have. There are two steps you should take:

• First, make sure that if your issue caused by an extension.
• If an extension is the problem, then we will need to determine which extensions are causing the problem. Here is how:

Please follow the steps below to turn off extensions to figure out whether they are causing the problems:

• Open Safari and in Safari, click Safari and Preferences.
• Click the Extensions tab. Then deselect all of the extension’s checkboxes to disable them.
• Now exit Preferences and test Safari. If your problem is not fixed, you can now turn on the extensions as they are not the issue. If your problem is fixed, it means that your problem caused by one of your extensions. What you can do is to re-enable the extensions one by one until you find the problematic extension. When you find it, you can remove (by clicking the Uninstall button), update, or contact its developer for further help.

If your issue continues to persist, you may want to fully reset Safari .

Safari is the go-to browser for almost all Mac users. It works well and is faster than other browsers due to its integration with macOS.

But just like any other browser, Safari is prone to error, too. It often tends to freeze or crash, sometimes getting stuck on the dreaded spinning beach ball and displaying the "Safari quit unexpectedly" error.

In some cases, Safari will cause your entire Mac to stop responding, leaving you no choice but to restart your system. Don't fret, though, because Safari crashing is pretty common among Mac users, and there are many fixes for it.

Why Does Safari Keep Crashing on Your Mac?

Safari constantly crashing can ruin your browsing experience. Here are some reasons why it might be happening:

• You have too many tabs open, and they're putting a strain on the CPU. Although Safari indeed uses less memory than Chrome and other browsers, opening too many tabs will still cause it to crash sometimes, especially if you have other resource-intensive applications running simultaneously.
• You're using a browser extension that's causing Safari to crash.
• You're using an older version of macOS and Safari. Safari updates itself when you update macOS. So, if you haven't updated your Mac in a long time, it could be why the browser is acting up.

5 Potential Fixes When Safari Keeps Crashing on Your Mac

Here are five things you can do if Safari keeps crashing on your Mac despite restarting and closing other tasks:

1. Force Quit Safari

Force quitting Safari is the first thing you should do if it stops working. First, try closing Safari by pressing Command+Q or by clicking on Safari in the menu bar and selecting Quit Safari from the drop-down menu.

If you can't click on anything, you'll have to minimize Safari and open the "Force Quit Applications" window. To do that, click on the Apple logo in the menu bar and choose Force Quit in the drop-down menu.

Select Safari in the list of applications and click on Force Quit .

2. Clear Cache Files

Cache files are temporarily stored files meant to speed up web pages, but too many cache files can actually slow down your browser and cause it to crash. That's why it's essential to clear cache files from Safari regularly.

Clearing cache is one of the many ways to reset Safari to default settings on your Mac . To delete cache files, click on Develop in the menu bar, and select Empty Caches .

If you don't see the Develop menu in the menu bar, you'll have to activate it by going to Safari > Preferences and then checking the "Show Develop menu in menu bar" option in the Advanced tab.

3. Delete Website Data

You can select which websites to delete, but since there will be so many, it'll be easier to just delete all of them.

To delete website data, click on Safari in the menu bar and select Preferences . Go to the Privacy tab and click on Manage Website Data . Click on Remove All and now relaunch Safari to see if crashes again.

4. Delete Browser Extensions

Browser extensions are useful tools, but sometimes they can negatively affect your browser's speed because some of them consume an excessive amount of memory. It's best to delete extensions that you don't use frequently.

To delete extensions, go to Safari > Preferences and click on the Extensions tab. Uncheck the boxes next to any extension you don't want to use. Remember that this only disables the extension. To completely remove it, click on Uninstall under the extension's name.

5. Update macOS​

One of the ways you can fix high CPU usage on macOS is by updating your Mac. Apple frequently releases macOS updates that contain fixes for bugs and glitches.

So, if none of the solutions above work for you, then you should check if any software updates are available for your Mac. Click on the Apple logo in the menu bar and go to System Preferences .

Click on Software Updates and if you see any updates there, click on Restart Now to start installing it.

Apple is releasing minor updates to all of its major software platforms today to address one high-priority security vulnerability and to fix a handful of other device- and service-specific issues. The iOS 16.3.1 , iPadOS 16.3.1, and macOS 13.2.1 updates all patch an "actively exploited" arbitrary code execution vulnerability in WebKit/Safari, and a second kernel vulnerability that isn't known to be actively exploited.

Those updates also fix an issue that could cause iCloud to become unresponsive and a Siri bug that was keeping it from working properly with the Find My feature. A HomePod 16.3.2 OS update also fixes some Siri problems that could cause smart home requests to fail. Detailed release notes aren't available for watchOS 9.3.1 or tvOS 16.3.2, but those updates are also available to download and presumably fix similar problems.

For iPhone 14 models, the iOS 16.3.1 update makes further tweaks to the Crash Detection safety feature. Meant to automatically contact first responders in the event of a car crash or sudden fall, Crash Detection has also made headlines for the false positives that it can generate— riding rollercoasters , skiing , dropping the phone at high velocities, and other activities have all set off Crash Detection.

Further Reading

For users of older Apple devices, there is a Safari update available for macOS Big Sur and Monterey to fix the WebKit bug, but no equivalent iOS 15 or iPadOS 15 update for older iPhones and iPads, and no documented fix for the kernel issue in any of these older operating systems. We've asked Apple whether these OS versions are vulnerable to these bugs and, if so, whether the company plans to release an update for them. We'll update the article if we receive a response.

Seems Safari is getting worse, I have noticed my own website: triofleaf.com or ifemoralmajesti.com has more performance issues since updating to Ventura. I have autoplay videos on my home page and other pages. They no longer seem to work with Safari. When I clear cookies however and reload the page it does work, but then navigating through the site and going back to home page shows errors / videos unable to play. I think this update has a few new bugs. I dunno if it's running out of memory or what... but Safari has often been troublesome in comparison with other browsers. For example i'm looking forward to using HTML 5 video AV1 codec to save bandwidth and speed things up for users and move on from very outdated old h.264 codec but so far Safari is holding back the show.

Safari has become unusable in the last few weeks. Websites only partially load and then links don't work. sometimes it will work OK for a little bit, and then, it sputters to a stop — literally. I am logged into MacRumors from Firefox to type this. I am on a Macbook Air M1 with 16gb ram. I like Safari because I frequently bookmark webpages for my media news business and it integrates bookmarks from my iPhone and iPad, but lately, it has become unusable for this. I have reset all my settings to the least restrictive, and cleared history and cache, but the problems remain. Anyone have any ideas what can be done to solve this?

Steps – what to do if Safari is crashing on macOS

Step 2: Tap on the Search tab > Disable Include search engine Suggestions > Disable Include Safari Suggestions .

Hi. I just updated to Ventura 13.2.1. Safari remains at 16.3. I restarted to see whether that would prompt an update, but it didn’t. I’ve checked via Get Info, but the version seems to be 16.3. Any suggestions?

You have the Safari 16.3.1 update if your BuildVersion is Ventura = 18614.4.6.11.6 even if the version number says 16.3.

When I check “about Safari,” is says Version 16.3 (18614.4.6.1.6). I d on’t know how to check the build version for Ventura itself.

Sorry I wasn’t clear. I did mean the build number for Safari 16.3.1 for Ventura is 18614.4.6.11.6, so you still have Safari for Ventura 16.3.

You can get the build number for Ventura by checking “About this Mac” from the  menu and clicking on the version number in that dialog box. It should be macOS 13.2.1 (22D68) after today’s update.

According to MacRumors, 16.3 (18614.4.6.1.6) is the correct build number, not 18614.4.6.11.6 (I think the 11 is a typo). The previous Safari was 16.3 (18614.4.6.1.5).

FWIW, the Safari update I just installed for Big Sur also reports itself as 16.3 (build number 16614.4.6.11.6).

I assume this the same release, compiled for Big Sur, since the build number is identical, not counting the second digit.

On my macOS Monterey system, the version number also lacks the “.1” used in the support article. In Safari’s About dialog: Version 16.3 (17614.4.6.11.6, 17614) .

My guess is the first two digits of the build number in the parentheses correspond to the major macOS version, since they’re 18 on Ventura, 17 on Monterey, and 16 on Big Sur.

Further to the version numbering issue, I compared two versions of Apple’s page about the security content of this release ( About the security content of Safari 16.3 - Apple Support ) - Google’s cached version dated 13 Feb and Apple’s current version dated 14 Feb. We can see that Apple removed the “.1” and added a footnote about build numbers.

Hey there, While everyone seems to be trying to decipher the real version number for the latest release of Safari (the deciphering required being an embarrassment for Apple, IMHO), I believe so far, no one has mentioned the latest copyright year (when invoking “About Safari”), is listed as “2022”, not “2023”, as it should be. An additional embarrassment for Apple.

Thanks very much Adam for this post and Al Varnell for your information. That was me (LCD) yesterday on Mac Rumors. My post at 6pm brought this problem I was having to their attention. At 1pm today a moderator in the forum named Nermal wrote that he knew nothing about it. Then KaliYoni wrote an hour ago about this forum here on TidBITS when I saw Al’s posts.

And just to add more confusion, I just installed the Big Sur 11.7.4 update. Immediately after the installation, a Safari update became available. This one is version 16.3.1 (16614.4.6.11.7).

On Big Sur 11.7.3 two updates are available: macOS 11.7.4 and Safari 16.3.1. Because 11.7.3 update had caused me a bunch of problems, I decided to install only the Safari update. Curiously the installer didn’t ask to quit Safari as normally expected. In fact after the installation nothing changed in Safari’s version number: Version 16.3 (16614.4.6.11.6, 16614) even after relaunching Safari.

I then downloaded the 16.3.1 installer here: https://swcdn.apple.com/content/downloads/62/14/032-51569-A_6C8JMC4NSY/3excb9qywqf00i87sfss53vk636jizy6ck/Safari16.3.1BigSurAuto.pkg and this one finally gave me Version 16.3.1 (16614.4.6.11.7, 16614)

Everything you said happened to me, but with more. The 11.7.4 update pane also offered Safari 16.3, which, to that level of detail, is what I had. Something around the declared size of the Safari update was downloaded, and the update proceeded normally (which means it took about 50 minutes).

Immediately after the installation, System Preferences sported a badge with a 1 in it. Minutes of “Checking for updates…” had no effect; it was not until after I restarted that Software Update was able (in short order) to offer Safari 16.3.1.

It’s like keeping system software up to date is a game of hide-and-seek or a treasure hunt. And then the prize is copyright 2022.

How to Fix Safari is Crashing on Big Sur?

Upgrade to the latest macOS Big Sur has not been seamless for many users. Like no software is perfect, there are certain issues faced by the users on this latest macOS version . One such issue is Safari keeps on crashing. So, how to fix Safari is crashing on Big Sur too often? Let’s discuss some solutions.

Make sure you’re running the latest version

Once you get the latest software update on your Mac, Safari is updated automatically. Now that if Safari is crashing too often on Big Sur, you need to make sure you’re running the latest version. Follow these steps to check it:

• Click on the Apple menu.
• Select About this Mac.
• Choose Software Update.
• If an update is available, follow the steps to install it .

How to fix Safari is crashing in macOS Big Sur?

Safari is a useful application on your Mac. You can’t find it installed as a simple binary app file, instead a lot of other files are stored with it. Many of these additional files are stored in the user Library folder or main Library folder. Now that you have a lot of additional files stored associated with Safari on your Mac , many of these files may interfere with web browser functioning or get corrupted causing trouble. In addition to that, all the browser extensions that you’ve installed, it is possible that some of them aree incompatible with Big Sur. To fix incompatible extensions, follow these steps:

• Go to Safari menu > Preferences.
• Choose Extensions.
• Now you will find a list of extensions, uncheck the box next to each one.
• Close Preferences and quit Safari.

Simply relaunch the Safari to check if it is working fine now. If it doesn’t, try emptying Safari cache by following these steps:

• Open Safari menu > Preferences > Advanced.
• Check the box next to Show Develop menu in menu bar option.
• Close Preferences.
• Tap on the Develop menu and select Empty Caches.
• Quit Safari and relaunch it.

If Safari is still crashing on Big Sur, then consider to clear your history. Once you remove the browser history, it will remove the history on connected iPhone or iPad devices too if you are signed into your same iCloud account. To clear history, follow these steps:

• Tap on the History menu.
• Select Clear History.
• Restart Safari.

How to remove Safari cache manually?

If you still find the issue, you should consider removing Safari cache manually. To do this, follow these steps:

• Open Finder > Go menu > Go To Folder.
• Open this path: ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari
• Drag the contents of that folder to the Trash.
• Relaunch Safari.

In addition to these steps, you can consider disabling Siri suggestions and Reading List to fix Safari crashing on macOS Big Sur. To do this, simply open Safari, find the Reading List and Favorites and disable these options. You can also try to change your homepage to other than the default one to fix this issue with Safari.

Safari 16.3.1

On Big Sur, latest version of Safari is Version 16.3.1 (16614.4.6.11.7, 16614), and website icons in Favorites page are fixed.

However, in Monterey, latest version appears to be 16.3 with icons in Favorites page still blank. Is it an issue with Software Update, or is it really not fixed yet? Thanks.

it's working fine here.

but to note, whenever I clear my history, the favicon revert to grey icons and then repopulate themselves in short order. what I would try would be to clear your history, completely close safari, then open it again and see if they repopulate themselves.

Apple Releases iOS 16.3.1 With iCloud Fix, Crash Detection Optimizations and More

Apple today released iOS 16.3.1, a minor update for the iOS 16 operating system that first came out in September. iOS 16.3.1 comes over two weeks after the launch of iOS 16.3 , an update that added Security Keys for Apple ID and support for the new HomePod .

According to Apple's release notes, the iOS 16.3.1 update includes multiple bug fixes, addressing issues with iCloud and Siri requests for Find My , plus it adds more Crash Detection optimizations.

This update provides important bug fixes and security updates for your iPhone including: - iCloud settings may be unresponsive or incorrectly display if apps are using iCloud - Siri requests for Find My may not work - Crash Detection optimizations on iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models

The ‌iCloud‌ settings fix may address an issue that could cause some people not to be able to toggle on automatic ‌iCloud‌ backups on the iPhone and the iPad , a problem that some users have been experiencing since the launch of iOS 16.3.

Crash Detection optimizations likely address ongoing issues with Crash Detection reported at ski resorts and amusement parks. At ski resorts in particular, emergency personnel have been receiving multiple accidental reports, which drain resources needed for actual emergencies. Apple has made multiple optimizations to Crash Detection to attempt to fix the problem.
