While we have not traveled as yet
While we have not traveled as yet, the itinerary that we developed is very exciting and we are looking forward to this experience very much. Jayson Scheffers has been a wonderfully engaged and responsive partner in developing our agenda, despite our having some needs to change travel dates and agendas during the planning process because of family illness that necessitated our changing plans.

My first experience a number of months…
My first experience a number of months back wasn't as I wanted. I picked up with Dolan a little after this to find when the best time to Safari was with the chance of seeing the "big 5" and he was so helpful, guiding me to July-September. With the cooler winter months being the better chances to see more wildlife and the big five. This lead me on to deal with Jayson. Jayson has pulled out all the stops, working past 9pm Cape Town time( 8pm London UK) to help meet my needs. I travel out on 6th July and cannot wait, Thank you Dolan and Jayson. Although we didn’t end up booking…
Although we didn’t end up booking through Safari.com the service we received was great and they were really helpful.
Trip to Kruger at Mdluli Safari Lodge
I loved working with Anja from safari.com. She put together my itinerary within my price range and was very professional, thorough and empathetic. She followed up with me many times to see if I needed anything throughout my trip and even filled out some forms for me when I was having difficulty. When the lodge I stayed at was not being accommodating in the slightest, she quickly contacted the manager and got them to rearrange their services to meet my needs. I would most certainly use safari.com again due to my wonderful experience working with Anja.

Nicole at Safari.com is AMAZING!!!
I would love to share my experience with Nicole. She has worked tirelessly to help me make my dream vacation a reality. I had no idea how to start planning. Nicole suggested the most wonderful South African resorts and safaris. No matter how many changes I threw her way it was always received with a happy, positive attitude. I live in Hawaii and even though we were on a 12 hour time difference she was always available to answer any questions or concerns. Her expertise, knowledge and patience are unmeasurable. I was plagued with numerous payment issues from my bank in Hawaii. Nicole never wavered from being patience and more importantly positive that we could resolve each issue and get my trip booked. Nicole is a huge asset to Safari.com and I will scream it from the mountains to let everyone know what excellent customer service I have received. Nicole is a ROCKSTAR!!! We are so excited for our upcoming adventure of a lifetime!

Her attention to detail and smooth communication made the planning process effortless. No request was too big or too small, and she handled everything with efficiency. Leigh-Ann exceeded all expectations, making our trip both stress-free and enjoyable. Her exceptional service reflects her professionalism. Very good experience with getting quotes
I didn’t end up booking with safari.com but I did have a great experience with their consultant, Leigh-Ann Croeser. I originally wanted to book a safari at a specific lodge but it was not available for the dates we wanted. She offered suggestions and helped us secure holds on other dates. She worked hard and sent several follow up emails as she was able to hold some dates for available rooms at the original lodge! We did end up booking with another safari tour company as I sent out a few quotes at the same time and that worked out better for us but next time I would definitely consider booking with her again!

Dunia Camp

The pristine Serengeti National Park is nestled in the heart of northern Tanzania . Encompassing vast plains of savannah, rolling hills, and a network of rivers, the Serengeti offers sanctuary to an abundance of wildlife and incredible safari opportunities year-round. Renowned for the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth—the annual migration, numerous zebra and gazelle, move in a circular pattern between Tanzania and Kenya in search of new pastures brought to life by the rain.

A dramatic highlight of their journey is crossing the Grumeti River, distressed wildebeest and zebra attempt to navigate the crocodile-infested waters making for a nail-biting experience. Experience calving season when the gorgeous newborn animals can be spotted, along with a large number of big cats.

The Serengeti offers a selection of luxury lodges and mobile tented camps, ensuring an unforgettable safari experience.

Serengeti National Park, home to Africa's richest population of wildlife, offers incredible game viewing experiences year-round. The best time to visit depends largely on what you wish to see. Many visitors are eager to witness the thrilling wildebeest migration, but this can be challenging to plan for, as the timing of the migration varies each year. Since the migration is a year-long process, which can be observed throughout the year. However, because the wildebeest traverse vast areas, certain key events in the migration can only be witnessed in specific regions of the park

When planning your trip consider that the calving season, usually runs from January and March with the river crossing happening between July and August. The best time for general wildlife watching is considered to be during June and July when animals are easier to find as they tend to congregate around water sources, and the vegetation is typically less dense. The weather is also ideal during this period, with little to no rainfall.

Visitors should note that while days are usually warm during this time, mornings and evenings can be chilly, so be sure to pack some warm clothing for early morning game drives.

Chances are that you have dreamt of Africa, and when you did, you probably dreamt about the Serengeti. Countless wildlife movies have been recorded in the Serengeti, and with good reason: this is the home of the Great Migration and may very well be one of the last true natural wonders on planet earth.

Serengeti National Park is a World Heritage Site teeming with wildlife: over 2 million ungulates, 4000 lions, 1000 leopard, 550 cheetahs and some 500 bird species inhabit an area close to 15,000 square kilometers in size. Join us on a safari and explore the endless Serengeti plains dotted with trees and kopjes from which majestic lions control their kingdom; gaze upon the Great Migration in awe or find an elusive leopard in a riverine forest. We started seeing huge herds of zebra and wildebeest as soon as we entered the park, and finally spotted a leopard, completing the Big 5 after more than a week visiting other parks in Kenya and Tanzania.

The diversity of the landscape and the sheer number of migratory animals make this region a must-see. Beware, however, of the great number of visitors during high season.
Had two amazing days in the Serengeti, we saw a myriad of animals including two Leopards and 7 Cheetahs. We did not set out to see the big 5 but saw 4 of them in Serengeti.

Our Readers' Favorite Safari Lodges in Africa in 2022

The best safari lodges, according to Travel + Leisure readers, go beyond the traditional game drive with a wide range of cultural experiences.

safari lodge serengeti park

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite safari lodges in Africa.

For Travel + Leisure readers, the best safari lodges in Africa aren't necessarily traditional safari properties — though plenty of those did make this list. Take, for example, Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge — a luxurious base for tracking mountain gorillas in the cloud forest of Rwanda. It seems that this once-in-a-lifetime experience elevated guests' memories beyond those of Big Five safaris: the word amazing appears repeatedly in Bisate reviews.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels (including safari lodges) were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city hotel, resort, or safari lodge based on their locations and amenities.

This year's World's Best list reveals a growing interest in nontraditional safaris. In addition to Bisate at the top spot, there's another Rwandan lodge, One&Only Nyungwe House (No. 3), where the highlights are tracking chimpanzees, bird-watching, and visiting a tea plantation. "A gorgeous property in an incredible location," said one voter. And there's a second gorilla-tracking property on the list: Bwindi Lodge (No. 10), in Uganda. "How special to stay at Bwindi Lodge," wrote one guest, "and be so well cared for when setting out to see the magnificent gorillas."

At No. 2, Gibb's Farm is "the most unique lodge of any kind in East Africa," claimed one reader. Overlooking Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater, a protected area known for its incredible density of wildlife, the 17-cottage property offers activities around its coffee plantation and gardens, as well as bush walks from the property and wildlife drives in the crater. One guest loved that it was "fun for adults and kids." It's "an incredibly beautiful hotel," said another. "The food was amazing, and I loved the farm-to-table philosophy."

Classic safaris are still well represented, with guests favoring wildlife-rich areas such as the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, the Masai Mara reserve in Kenya, and the South African Kruger National Park. As well as wildlife sightings and luxurious rooms, it was the people who made an impact on T+L readers. Of andBeyond Bateleur Camp (No. 6), in Kenya's Masai Mara, one reader said that "the guides are truly spectacular," while another described "warm, welcoming service."

1. Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge, Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

On the edge of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Bisate Lodge has six stylish and cozy villas, each overlooking the surrounding villages, forests, and misty mountain peaks. The main activity there is trekking into the national park to spend some time watching the mountain gorillas, but there are also opportunities to see golden monkeys, go hiking in the mountains, or visit the grave of renowned primatologist Dian Fossey. The staff are "amazing," said one reader, who added the food was "delicious," especially the homegrown vegetables. Another fan said staying at Bisate was "the absolute best...experience we have ever had. The food, service, and rooms were beyond amazing."

Tarangire National Park

Lemala Mpingo Ridge Lodge - Tarangire National Park, Tanzania

Tarangire remains off the main safari circuit, making it a premier destination for discriminating travelers in search of a more intimate and authentic safari experience. You’ll arrive in time for lunch and your first afternoon game drive - followed by Sundowner Cocktails and an elegant dinner back at camp.  Meals B+L+D

On Safari in Tarangire

Thrill to morning and afternoon game drives with our expert safari guides here in one of Tanzania’s most visually striking national parks. The Tarangire River is nearby – a magnet for wildlife – and the surrounding scenery encompasses classic African savannah, green hills, woodlands and giant Baobab trees! Tarangire is heralded for abundant wildlife, especially its large herds of elephants and superb birdlife. Lions, leopards, cheetahs and other fierce predators are also regularly spotted. This evening, we’ll take you out again for an exciting night safari to search for nocturnal species and to experience the night sounds of the African bush.  Meals B+L+D

Onward to Ngorongoro Crater

Lemala Ngorongoro Camp - Ngorongoro, Tanzania

Big game is just one facet of Africa that will inspire you; this morning’s visit to spend time with students and staff at a school is another, providing memorable insight into the challenges and rewards of life in Tanzania. Continue to Lemala Ngorongoro ; perched on the crater’s rim, our luxury safari camp offers your first look at the captivating beauty of the world’s largest intact caldera. After lunch, tear yourself away from the view to visit a Maasai village. This evening, a chief’s son offers his own personal insight into Maasai culture. Meals B+L+D

Wildlife on the Crater floor

There is no place anywhere on the planet that is quite like Ngorongoro Crater c , and it offers an absolutely unique environment for wildlife viewing. With its vast expanses of open grassland surrounded by steep cliffs, the crater floor is easy for game officials to patrol and the result is abundant wildlife including rare species like black rhino and cheetah. Because our camp enjoys a prime location by the Lemala Crater Access Route, you’ll descend quickly this morning for a spectacular game drive before other visitors have even arrived on the crater floor!   We’ve also arranged for Lemala’s skilled chefs to provide our guests with a picnic lunch, meaning you’ll have more time for wildlife viewing here in this absolutely singular setting. Returning to our luxury camp this afternoon, you’ll have time to relax before dinner.  Meals B+L+D

To Olduvai Gorge and the Central Serengeti

Lemala Ewanjan Central Serengeti Camp

Traveling this morning into the unique terrain of Olduvai Gorge, you’ll learn about the passions that drove Louis and Mary Leakey to their remarkable 1.8 million-year-old fossil discoveries. Continue your journey into the vast expanse of the Central Serengeti c , unequaled for its beauty and the concentration of its wildlife - including Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhino and Cape Buffalo. In addition to these Big 5 animals, so named not for their size but because safari hunters considered them to be the most difficult and dangerous to track, the Serengeti is home to numerous other herbivores and the fierce predators which are rarely far behind. Enjoy an afternoon game drive before relaxing with Sundowner cocktails and an elegant dinner at the exclusive Lemala Ewanjan . Meals B+L+D

Ballooning Over the Serengeti

Animals, too, have their regular routines and this morning’s hot air balloon safari in the sharp clear light of dawn is an amazing time to gaze down as the wildlife of the Serengeti greets another day. Touch back down for a champagne breakfast and a morning game drive. Back at camp, you’ll have ample time to relax and share your impressions of Africa with your fellow adventurers. A late afternoon safari drive promises more encounters with the wide variety of primates, birds, horned bovines, wild dogs, ungulates and big cats that roam the Serengeti. Meals B+L+D

Tracking Game Across the Plains

Lemala Ndutu, Tanzania

Lemala Mara North Serengeti Camp

Enjoy a morning safari drive as we take you into another remote sector of the Serengeti; depending upon the season and to follow the Great Migration herds as they make their way across the vast plains, you’ll travel to either Lemala Ndutu in the Southern Serengeti or Lemala Mara to the North. (Note : When the Migration is in the Central Serengeti, our guests will continue their stay at Lemala Ewanjan .)  With animals constantly on the move in their inexorable quest for food and water, your camp’s setting affords unmatched game viewing at any time of year. From April to June and in November , you’ll travel overland from Ngorongoro to Lemala Ewanjan , set within the game-rich Seronera Valley in a secluded part of the Central Serengeti. This region is renowned for terrific game viewing all year long - due to its abundance of water. But during the months that our guests are here, the Seronera Valley receives the annual wildebeest migration – turning the area into an exciting wildlife amphitheater! From July to October , we’ll take you from Ngorongoro to the Manyara airstrip for your included flight into the Northern Serengeti. On arrival, you’ll be escorted to the inviting  Lemala Mara Camp  – set up under large Euclea trees where guests are treated to breathtaking landscapes  Indeed, this intimate camp is in the heart of the best game-viewing area in the Northern Serengeti and –  at this time of year  – is perfectly situated to witness the dramatic spectacle of the Great Migration river crossings. From December to March , a scenic overland drive takes you from Ngorongoro into the Southern Serengeti to stay at Lemala Ndutu Camp . Perched on the edge of a permanent marsh, our safari camp is ideally situated for the wildebeest migration as the animals arrive in search of water and to feed on the nutritious grasses that surround our Camp. By February, the calving season has begun and the vast herds continue to feed in preparation for the never-ending cycle that comprises the annual wildebeest migration!   After lunch, enjoy a leisurely afternoon at your Lemala camp. Later you’ll gather for Sundowner Cocktails – a great time to engage further with our expert safari guide, thus deepening your appreciation of the Serengeti, its unique eco-systems and wildlife.  Meals B+L+D

On Safari in the Serengeti

The Maasai call it Siringitu - "the place where the land moves on forever." Indeed, these wide open expanses are awe-inspiring in their natural beauty. But the Serengeti is also renowned for its extraordinary concentration of plains game - including of course the Big Five. So expect today’s morning and afternoon safari drives to be heart-pounding and inspiring. And in the company of our engaging, impassioned and knowledgeable safari guides, today's activities offer more chances to learn about Tanzania and its abundant natural wealth.  Meals B+L+D
