I Just Flew 14 Hours to Tokyo—26 Items I Won't Board Another Flight Without

Dutch fashion influencer Amaka Hamelijnck taking a selfie on an airplane wearing a white tank, a baseball hat, denim shorts, and a pink tote bag.

I consider myself a frequent flyer . This year alone, I've already been to Mexico twice, L.A., Florida, Stockholm, Copenhagen , and Boston, and just last week, I got back from a trip to Tokyo. I've zipped and unzipped my black Away Bigger Carry-On so many times that it remained a fixture on my living room floor all summer with too little time between trips for me to bother putting it away. I've been to the airport so frequently over the past few months that I've joked about renting out a room next to JFK. Recently, I became the proud holder of United's Premier Gold status.

Suffice it to say, I've gotten my in-flight routine down to science at this point. Of course, I'll tweak which essentials to bring with me based on how long my travel day will be and whether I'll have to eat or sleep on board. I've figured out a few things that can separate good flight from a bad one and make or break my jet lag, skin, digestion, and… Well, you get the picture. Ahead, discover the 26 travel essentials I won't board another long-haul international flight without, from the weighted eye mask that has me out like a light to the face mist that helps me avoid post-flight breakouts.

Soothing Weighted Eye Mask for Relieving Tension | Bearaby Dreamer

Once I started using this weighted eye mask—both at home and while traveling—it was game over. I've never experienced deeper and more long-lasting sleep in my life.

Bose, Headphones 700

The noise cancellation on these is a little too good.

Sos Daily Rescue Facial Spray With Hypochlorous Acid

I usually break out after a long flight, but spritzing this every few hours helped keep any breakouts at bay.

Flashpatch™ Night Restoring Eye Gels Eye Mask

Small but necessary.

Biodance, Bio-Collagen Real Deep Mask Sheet

My favorite sweats brand makes the cutest—and comfiest—hoodies out there that are perfect for battling the plane AC. After this last long-haul flight, I'll be opting for a zip-up so it's easier to take off without undoing all those headphone cords when watching a movie.

Lounge Pant

These pants are soft and lighter than air, and they don't entirely look like pajamas despite feeling like it.

Cashmere Jersey Crew Socks

The first thing I do on flights longer than a few hours is take my shoes off for better circulation. These Vince cashmere socks are the best things to put on to stay warm.

Mini Alpha Beta® Universal Daily Peel Pads

For before, during, and after flying.

Deweisn Folding Travel Mirror Lighted Makeup Mirror With 72 Leds 3 Colors Light Modes, Usb Rechargable, Portable, Ultra Thin, Compactvanity Mirror With Touch Screen Dimming for Cosmetic (pink)

I don't trust my phone's front camera or those tiny bathrooms to get the job done when I'm doing my in-flight skincare routine. It's also useful for doing makeup at your hotel or Airbnb.

Dutch fashion influencer Amaka Hamelijnck taking a selfie on an airplane wearing a white tank, a baseball hat, denim shorts, and a pink tote bag.

Wearing sunscreen when flying is a nonnegotiable because the sun is far more intense at 30,000 feet. I'm truly obsessed with this viral tube from Korea's Beauty of Joseon.

The Minimalist

For any last touch-ups before landing.

Beauty Elixir Face Mist

It's important to keep your skin hydrated.

Twelve South Airfly Pro Bluetooth Transmitter

Because fishing around in a sea of tangled cords in my tote bag just isn't it.

A Chanel Flap bag, Rhode lip gloss, and AirPods Max on a plane.

The tube version of this lip balm is better for traveling since you don't have to use your hands to dispense it.

Tumi, Jewelry Case

I hate wearing jewelry because my fingers always swell up, and too many pieces get uncomfortable. This chic carrying case keeps everything organized.

Funny Story

An easy, feel-good read is just what the doctor ordered, especially during take-off and landing when you can't use a laptop or tablet.

Ultima Replenisher Daily Electrolyte Drink Mix – Lemonade, 20 Stickpacks – Hydration Packets With 6 Key Electrolytes & Trace Minerals – Keto Friendly, Vegan, Non-Gmo & Sugar-Free Electrolyte Powder

I swear by these electrolyte packets to stay hydrated.

Loop Quiet Ear Plugs for Noise Reduction – Super Soft, Reusable Hearing Protection in Flexible Silicone for Sleep, Noise Sensitivity - 8 Ear Tips in Xs/s/m/l – 24db & Nrr 14 Noise Cancelling - Violet

Ear plugs that are made to look like jewelry—genius.

Influencer Kit Keenan on a plane wearing a white T-shirt, white jeans, blue sweater, and sunglasses.

Stepping off a 14-hour flight with a perfect blowout is one of those little luxuries that I never knew I needed to experience.

Resurrection Aromatique Hand Balm

Not only does this hand cream smell amazing, but the texture is also ultra rich.

ДЕЗОДОРАНТ Bergamot & Hinoki

I love the scent of this deodorant.

Now Supplements, Magnesium Citrate, Enzyme Function*, Nervous System Support*, 120 Veg Capsules

For some reason, my digestion always gets messed up when I travel, so I always keep plenty of magnesium supplements on hand.

Livon Laboratories Lypo-Spheric Vitaminc - 1000mg Vitaminc & 1000mg Essential Phospholipids Per Packet - Liposome Encapsulated for Improved Absorption - 100% Non-Gmo, 1 Carton, 0.2fl.oz(pack of 30)

These packets are apparently the best form of vitamin C out there.

Clear Eyes Triple Relief Eye Drops, Relieves Redness & Calms Irritation, 0.5 Fl Oz

Everything gets dried out on a long flight, so hydration is key for hands, skin, and eyes too.

why i don’t shop when i travel

  • May 1, 2014

Traveling heightens conflation and coincidences and special moments.

I felt a bit intrusive capturing this woman's quiet moment, but it was too special not to ...

This post has been edited.

This is mostly how it works: new experiences, the unfamiliar, fresh eyes and movement (ie non-stagnancy) mean that we’re in the best position to notice the conflations and coincidences. Although, as I have written before, there is no such thing as coincidence. Or, rather, everything is a coincidence. It’s just that sometimes we notice them more.

When I travel the number 108 comes up incessantly – my hotel room number, my flight time, the cost of a train ticket across the border. It freaks out anyone who travels with me. And Jo – I often send the screen grab of the instance to her. (As an aside, the number is highly auspicious in many religions and in mathematics circles. I’ve asked a few people about its significance for me and they’ve simply said to pause and notice my intention when it pops up…).

So where does shopping fit in? In general, shopping takes us into a mindset of “lack”. We go into a mode of “needing” something, of fear that we’re missing out on something (that feeling that a trip to New York or London is “wasted” if you don’t buy a handbag at Barneys or a dress at Topshop). We go into malls. Our focus narrows down to cuts and styles and bargains and bags and things. We can spend an entire day in changerooms and High Streets that could be anywhere, frantically on a mission.

When we shop when we travel we don’t experience the fresh eyes that travel can afford and can miss out on the special moments.

Last night I was walking home from having dinner with my UK publisher at Nopi in Soho. It was a relatively warm night in London and the streets had a vibrant feel. Everyone was bolting into the shops before they closed, bustling out with bags. And things. I looked up above the shops. There was a woman dancing in her bra on her own in an apartment on the fourth floor.

I stepped across the road. In a darkened, empty (long shut-for-the-night) musical instruments shop (surely one of only a few left in London?), there was a large man playing a baby grand in the corner, on his own, with no shoes on. His hat, coat and shoes were in a pile on a chair nearby.

He was playing with his eyes shut and a big smile on his face. None of the shoppers noticed him. He looked up and we both smiled at each other. Sprung! I have no idea what his story was. How he came to be there.

This trip, as with all my travels, has been full of conflations and coincidences and special moments. It’s why I love travel. I can tend to put my blinkers on (not from shopping, but from being preoccupied in my head) back home. When you’re thrust into the unfamiliar, it prises the blinkers off.

In New York I had to kill time waiting for someone in a bookshop. The first book I picked up as I aimlessly browsed was On Looking: A Walker’s Guide to the Art of Observation. It fell open to a page with this quote at the top:

“It matters not where or how far you travel –  the further commonly the worse – but how much alive you are.” – Henry David Thoreau.

Word, right?

Where to Start

  • Clean out your closet . Find as many pieces as possible you think would work on your trip. Follow these guidelines on how to choose the right travel clothing .
  • Plan a budget! Do you have money allotted to buy clothing or gear for your trip or will you shop in your own closet ?
  • Mark down what you have and what you need to buy. Stick to your budget! Have fun!
  • Before you go shopping, make a list of any items you weren’t able to find in your closet. Refer to the list of favorite retailers you created earlier in the course and hit the shops! You can find a listing of recommended retailers on Travel Fashion Girl’s Best Online Shopping Sites directory.

Because of my nomadic lifestyle, I didn’t always have access to the best retail stores in every location, so I shopped online – a lot. In fact, I still do. I have certain go-to stores that make my life easier.

My favorite place is Amazon because you can sometimes find lower prices than other retailers, and you can read tons of feedback and other buyers’ reviews.

Plus, as a Prime member, I get free 1-2 day shipping and sometimes free returns, making the online shopping process much faster.

shop and travel they don't

My other favorite site is Nordstrom because I get a wide breadth of selection from decent brands and quality, and it doesn’t always have to cost an arm and a leg. I like that they offer the latest styles with the quality that I desire.

Nordstrom Rack is my other favorite place to shop because it’s Nordstrom clothing with budget prices. In addition, I also frequent H&M , Zappos , and Zara .

I like shopping online because I can research all the possibilities, read reviews, and start planning my initial capsule wardrobe!

Here are some money saving tips to purchase clothing and travel gear:

  • Shop off season! I love shopping after summer and winter because you can get great deals on clothing that would be perfect for your next vacation. I’ve just purchased the majority of my clothing for my upcoming trip to India from $5 to $15 per piece!
  • Sign up for newsletters from your favorite retailers to get updates on their latest sales. I wanted a pair of shorts from Athleta for the longest time, but refused to pay $55. The second Athleta had a sale, I got an email and bought my shorts for 30% off. Score!
  • Find out if the retailer has an outlet. Many popular stores have online outlets including REI , Mango , J. Crew , and Nordstrom (my favorite). Sometimes they carry merchandise at a fraction of the cost as the current price in the regular store. I bought a designer handbag for $150 at Nordstrom Rack when it was selling for $300 at Nordstrom . Love it!
  • Head over to your nearest discount retailer and scour the racks for highly discounted gear. TJ Maxx , Ross , and Marshalls are great options in the US, and in the UK they have TK Maxx . I especially like these stores for deals on shoes, fitness wear, and under garments. I’ve also seen highly discounted luggage brands such as Tumi , Fossil , and Eagle Creek.
  • Buy big ticket items like luggage, backpacks, and electronics during holiday sales such as Christmas, New Year’s, Memorial Day, and Labor Day. My absolute favorite time to shop for these items is the day after Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday. Take advantage of the early bird deals all weekend. This is how I bought my first backpack. I couldn’t believe that the majority of outdoor bags were well over $200, and not only did my backpack go on sale during Thanksgiving, but they were offering 25% off on top of that! My $200 backpack cost $125. A price tag that was way more manageable.
  • Search for the diamond in the rough at second hand stores . You might find an excellent winter coat with a bargain basement price tag or a cute handbag that would add a hint of vintage appeal to your outfits. Buyer beware – make sure it’s in good condition, because the last thing you want is your suitcase falling apart in the middle of your trip (or in the beginning, which sort of indirectly happened to me).
  • If you want to sport designer digs, but don’t have the budget to back it up, look for consignment shops in your area or search for some online. This is basically like a designer eBay where people sell their high-end clothing and accessories at a fraction of the cost. Merchandise is usually inspected and approved by the shop owner, so authenticity and condition are guaranteed. I haven’t purchased anything at a consignment shop, but I did sell my Marc Jacobs and Givenchy shoes at the famous Decades in LA. I didn’t make as much money as I would have like, but it was better than keeping them in storage.
  • Beg, borrow , but don’t steal. Ask your family or friends if they have items such as luggage, sleeping bags, and other outdoor gear to loan you for your trip. On my first two-week overland trip in Africa, I was using a friend’s backpack, sleeping bag, and rolling mat. I saved tons of cash and reaped the benefits from the quality of their very expensive gear.
  • Have a clothing swap with your friends or family! When I was working in the fashion industry, some girls and I would get together and bring a pile of clothing we no longer wanted. We traded one-for-one and had a brand new selection of clothing while clearing out old items we no longer wanted. You can apply this same principle to anything. I held a Freecycle event in Koh Phangan, Thailand, the first recycling event on the island, and people brought stuff they no longer wanted and people could take anything for free. It’s a fun way to shop sustainably.
  • Sign up for “free” online sites where people give away things they no longer need. It may be a long shot for you to find that perfect suitcase, but you never know. Give it a shot. Sites with free merchandise include Craigslist, local Couchsurfing forums, and freecycle.org.
  • Check out online sites such as eBay, Craigslist (US), Gumtree (UK), and Local Swap/Sales Groups on Facebook. People sell a variety of stuff. I’ve seen Eagle Creek backpacks, The North Face trousers, and other outdoor goods for sale. Likewise, if you buy items for a trip that you only plan to use once, sell them on these sites and make some money back. I want to do this with my collection of Osprey Bags, but I can’t bring myself to part with them even though I could probably get a few hundred for them.

  • Amazon is an excellent place to score deals on everything from shoes to luggage, underwear, and travel gear. As you’ll read below I do most of my shopping online and at least half my stuff is from Amazon. They have a wide selection and many times items are cheaper here than anywhere else. I’m an Amazon Addict!

I took these Cotopaxi bags to the Amazon. Here’s how they held up.

For nine days, our writer lugged these new Allpa bags through humid rainforest, rugged streets, and mountainsides.

Journalist Austa Somvichian-Clausen treks through the Amazon Rainforest in Ecuador, carrying the Cotopaxi Allpa 28L Travel Pack.

Ecuador is a country of beautiful extremes, from the lush Amazon rainforest to the rugged Andes mountains. Cotopaxi, one of the highest active volcanoes in the world, looms tall—far from the Pacific coastline and even farther from the Galápagos Islands beyond.

This spring I joined a nine-day small group tour through the Amazon in Ecuador, hosted by Intrepid Travel. It was the perfect environment to test a couple of pieces from Cotopaxi’s new line of Allpa travel packs. We started out in the capital city of Quito, which serves as a jumping-off point to other, more remote adventures.

After several hours of driving in a sprinter van along winding, bumpy cliffside roads, we arrived at sunset in Tena, the gateway city to the Amazon on the banks of the Arajuno River. We threw our packs into small motorized boats that zipped us along to Liana Jungle Lodge , only accessible by river.

From there, we began a daylong journey that took us on sweat-soaked treks through dense forest and along waterways—an experience that would contrast starkly from the chilly wetness of hiking in Cotopaxi National Park several days later.

Throughout the trip, the Cotopaxi Allpa 28L Travel Pack and the Allpa 38L Roller Bag kept my things dry and protected, even when the bags were tossed around in the bus or rolled across muddy, uneven ground. The travel pack—filled to the brim—was comfortable to carry around, even in high humidity. Surprisingly, the only time I had any trouble was in the airport, when the two-wheeled roller bag didn’t quite live up to expectations. Overall, I was impressed by the performance of these two updated Allpa bags.

What I packed on my trip to Ecuador

The new version of Cotopaxi’s Allpa 28L Travel Pack and the Allpa 38L Roller Bag .

The Cotopaxi Allpa Line

Cotopaxi is a well-known B-Corp outdoor gear brand with a popular line of travel packs called Allpa . This collection of backpacks and rolling bags blends practicality and durability to withstand the rigors of travel. They have suitcase-style openings for easy packing and unpacking, internal organization pockets, and a carry-on-friendly design. They’re built with high-quality materials and, in the case of the Del Día versions, re-purposed fabric.

In August 2024, Cotopaxi introduced a new version of the Allpa line that the company says builds on past strengths. The updated bags introduce features that came in handy on my trip, plus the most significant change: a shift to using 100 percent recycled fabrics across the entire line, according to the company.

The full Allpa line includes the new, compact Allpa 20L , ideal for shorter trips or minimalist travelers; the Allpa 28L and 35L , both of which offer more space within carry-on limits for most airlines; and the Allpa 42L , designed for longer journeys when you need to pack more gear.

For this particular trip, I traveled with the 28L Travel Pack and the 38L Roller Bag . I wanted a smaller piece of luggage for long hikes and to store items I needed more frequently. The roller bag gave me more room for heavier and bulkier pieces, such as jackets and warm layers. Read on for details on each bag and how they held up.

Cotopaxi Allpa 28L Travel Pack Features

An image of a travel backpack.

Buy it now at Cotopaxi

Like the previous version, the Allpa 28L Travel Pack has the same design and materials (TPU-coated polyester and ballistic nylon). But the new version introduces lots of features that helped make my trip more comfortable. There’s a stretchy exterior pocket that makes it easy to grab and store your water bottle. The luggage pass-through strap hooks onto the roller bag, which made a big difference for transporting my gear around the airport and on the hilly streets of Quito.

Rather than having to dig around a conventional backpack, the Allpa 28L has a suitcase-style, full-wrap zipper opening for quickly grabbing that layering piece when the temperature drops. I also found the sleek external pockets a welcome improvement for stowing your passport or other items you need handy.

I particularly appreciated the new air mesh shoulder straps while trekking through humid conditions. The thoughtful weight distribution was also important, especially for a petite traveler like myself (I’m 5 feet tall).

Cotopaxi Allpa 38L Roller Bag Features

An image of a rolling bag.

The 38L Roller Bag retains all the features from the previous version, which travelers have come to appreciate. You’ll find the same sturdy construction, smooth-rolling wheels, and practical organization, with multiple compartments and mesh pockets for easy packing. It also preserves the line’s unique construction that melds hardshell suitcase and backpack, featuring a suitcase-style opening with large mesh zip pockets on either side of the interior.

Besides using 100 percent recycled materials, the 38L Roller Bag has a reinforced handle for increased durability. But the most significant change are the wheels, which now offer better maneuverability on uneven surfaces. That’s key for travel, especially in busy areas like Quito.

Despite these improvements, this bag has just two wheels rather than four. While I found it convenient to stack my 28L Travel Pack on top of this roller bag, the combo became heavy and cumbersome to wheel through the airport or other busy areas.

Ecuador packing tips

Tip 1: pack waterproof and quick-dry clothing.  .

While Ecuador’s rainy season generally runs from October to May, you’ll still need to pack plenty of waterproof clothing throughout the year. Even on the sunniest days, quick-dry clothing will ensure you aren’t soaked in sweat during your travels.

Tip 2: It gets surprisingly cold at night.

Sunny days turn into chilly nights throughout Ecuador, including in high-elevation Quito, where many travelers begin their journeys. If you plan on visiting Quito or the Andes, you’ll thank yourself for bringing warm layers.

Tip 3: Consider the different regions you will be visiting.

One of the most glorious aspects of Ecuador is its natural diversity, which can make packing difficult. As you build your itinerary, consider each region’s unique climate and how many days you plan to spend there. Think about multifunctional pieces and lightweight items that can be layered. This will help prevent overpacking for one leg of your journey, hindering you on another.

Tip 4: Don’t forget sun protection and bug repellent.

The equator runs through Ecuador’s northern region, which means the sun burns bright in the country. Pack a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 that will work for your face and body. When the sun dips below the horizon, the mosquitos come out to play, especially in the Amazon. Keep in mind that mosquitos in Ecuador can carry a range of diseases, from yellow fever to dengue fever and malaria, all of which can be deadly.

Tip 5: Bring a filtering water bottle.

The tap water in Ecuador is not potable. Packing a water bottle with filtration will save time and money and is better for the environment.

( The 8 best travel backpacks of 2024 )

Final thoughts

For some, journeying through the Amazon is a lifelong dream. I was fortunate to join this trip six years after I applied for a research position in Ecuador that I had to put on hold for a position at National Geographic.

My trip was worth the wait. Hiking long distances through the jungle, following streams, and climbing up mountains tested my strength and resolve. But reaching the top of the world and gazing out at stunning panoramic views was rewarding.

Throughout it all, the Allpa packs stayed dry thanks to their water-resistant nylon construction and upgraded air mesh shoulder straps in the travel pack. They didn’t sustain any damage after being knocked around, lugged through high humidity and heat, and dragged across rough terrain.

Having both the backpack, with its internal mesh organizer pockets, and the larger roller pack allowed me to prepare well for Ecuador’s unpredictable weather. Besides wishing the roller bag had an additional two wheels for more seamless maneuvering, I was impressed by the durability and packability of both bags.

Rice U. study: Don’t shop for travel at work

David Ruth 713-348-6327 [email protected]

Jeff Falk 713-348-6775 [email protected]

HOUSTON – (March 26, 2014) –It is probably not a good idea to shop for leisure travel from the office during business hours, according to a new study from Rice University and Iowa State University.

Using data from a major online hotel reservation site, the study examined the quality of the hotel that consumers chose for their vacations and subsequently how satisfied they were with their stay. They found that consumers who traveled farther and made reservations during business hours were more likely to select higher quality hotels but were less satisfied after their stay. More than 35 percent of those studied made purchases during business hours.

shop and travel they don't

The study is timely as Americans begin planning for summer vacation travel and important because of the magnitude of the United States’ leisure travel industry, the paper’s authors said. According to the U.S. Travel Association, the industry in 2012 generated direct spending of $597 billion and an estimated economic output of $2 trillion.

In their study, the researchers identified three circumstantial variables at the time of purchase that were likely to impact both the hotel choice as well as postpurchase satisfaction: the time between purchase and the hotel stay; the distance between the city from where the reservation was made and the city where the hotel is located; and time of purchase (business or nonbusiness hours). They then incorporated these three circumstantial variables into an econometric model.

The study consisted of a random sample of 4,582 consumers who made hotel reservations between January 2008 and October 2009. All the consumers who were studied paid for their hotel stay at the time of reservation.

The researchers found that consumers who traveled farther and made reservations during business hours were more likely to select higher quality hotels but were less satisfied than those people who stayed at the same hotel, but traveled less, and people who booked during nonbusiness hours.

“We speculate that occurs because people are either more fatigued at work and tend to buy more expensive items or that vacations seem more appealing while people are at work,” Kalra said. “This kind of preliminary data indicates that people should not be making purchases when they are working.”

The authors also found that consumers who book and pay earlier are more likely to select higher quality hotels and are more satisfied than those who wait till the last minute. “So the reasoning, not originally ours, is that if you pay earlier, the ‘pain-of-paying’ — which is the pain you feel when paying for something — diminishes with time, leaving people happier during their vacation,” Kalra said. “This tells us that people will enjoy the vacation more if they pay before.”

In addition, if the service in the hotel is bad, then the pain felt at the point of purchasing probably comes back, making people less satisfied, the authors found.

“Our findings suggest that looking at such circumstantial variables is very useful for product managers to understand and predict choices and satisfaction assessments,” Kalra said. “These variables should help firms to increase their understanding of consumer decision-making and develop better marketing strategies.” The findings should also help consumers by understanding the factors that impact their decisions, like the timing of purchase, he said.

Many Americans say they won't give up travel in tough economic times. Here's how they're saving on road trips.

Many Americans are prioritizing travel despite concerns about the economy.

Labor Day weekend domestic travel is projected by AAA to be up 9% year over year.

Consumers can cut costs by choosing cheaper hotels, taking shorter trips, and planning ahead.

Americans are increasingly seeing travel as a need rather than a want , with many people willing to cut back in other areas — or even go into debt — before giving up vacation altogether.

Rod Griffin, senior director of public education and advocacy at Experian, said even though many Americans are worried about the economy, they're still traveling.

"They're just looking for ways to make it more affordable, or at least reduce the costs," he told Business Insider.

After a booming summer travel season , AAA estimates domestic travel over Labor Day weekend is up 9% from last year, while international travel is down 4%, according to their booking numbers. AAA said the shift is driven in part by inflation, which has made trips abroad 11% more expensive.

Griffin said he's spoken to consumers who are paying closer attention to their options when it comes to making travel more affordable and that includes rethinking how to travel domestically, like by taking road trips .

Experian survey data from May found that 71% of consumers surveyed felt that inflation impacted their road trip plans. The survey respondents included 1,008 insured drivers, who, on average, said they expected to spend more than $1,000 on road trip expenses. Gas, lodging, and food were the expenses respondents expected to spend the most on during their trip.

Griffin said there are various ways consumers say they are cutting back on road trip costs, from opting for less expensive hotels to packing lunches rather than stopping for every meal to taking group trips that enable cost splitting.

Some Americans are also taking trips that aren't as far away in order to save on gas but still get quality family time in.

"People are looking at, not a staycation, but a closer to home vacation, as opposed to going cross country" in order to save on fuel and lodging, he said.

In some cases, like if you are a couple traveling in an area with higher gas prices, it may even be cheaper to fly rather than drive, so weighing those options is another way to ensure you're opting for the most affordable option.

Travel-minded Americans can also focus on the bigger picture of their finances in order to out aside more money for travel, Griffin said. For families who rely on road trips, keeping up with car maintenance can avoid costly and unexpected vacation expenses.

Experian said three out of four surveyed consumers said they were worried about car insurance rates increasing, so Griffin said another option is to shop around for lower rates, noting that Experian has an insurance marketplace that can be used.

"Reduce overall costs that affect that budget in the long term," he said.

Americans can also focus on utilizing their credit card points or actively seeking out a credit card that comes with rewards for common travel expenses.

The key thing to saving money on road trips is to plan ahead, Griffin said, and to set a budget and stick with it.

I'm a 24-year-old who's never been out of North America — and I don't plan on changing that any time soon

  • I'm 24 and I have never been out of North America.
  • This is for a lot of reasons, including my fear of flying and my financial situation.
  • I'm not planning on changing this anytime soon, and I wish people would stop judging each other for their choices.

It's no secret that, as a whole, society is obsessed with traveling. From the Instagram accounts dedicated to dream-like destinations to news stories about  people who  quit their jobs to spend all of their money on traveling , we love to romanticize the hell out of navigating the globe.

It makes complete sense. Traveling can open you up to new experiences, friendships, perspectives, and life goals. But it's just not for me.

There are a million articles online about how great it is to travel (see all of the wonderful content on INSIDER's  Travel section ), but there aren't as many that speak to my experience: a 24-year-old who has never traveled out of North America and has no desire to.

Let me explain myself.

I am terrified of flying, to the point of panic attacks.

Being nervous about air travel is not exactly uncommon. In fact, the Federal Aviation Administration estimates that about  1 in 3 adults have some qualms about flying . But my fear of flying is intense. So much so, that my last plane trip resulted in me hyperventilating and being mocked by an entire baseball team.

I haven't flown commercial in about 12 years and haven't flown at all in about eight. After my last flight, which was through a thunderstorm, I quite literally kissed the ground at the Pittsburgh International Airport and vowed to never put myself through that again.

I know that with some work I could get over this fear, but right now, it's not exactly a priority for me.

I suffer from anxiety, which makes traveling more terrifying.

Traveling can stress out even the most "normal" people. Now throw in the fact that I have high anxiety, and it's a recipe for disaster.

Itineraries stress me out, and I spiral at the thought of plans not lining up perfectly. Being in a new place overwhelms me, as there are a lot of unknowns and I easily lose control of the situation. Something as simple as a taxi driver getting lost can make tears run down my face, which is just plain embarrassing.

It's not that I avoid trips because of my anxiety. I still travel, thanks to Amtrak, but it takes a lot out of me. This makes traveling a lot less fun, though I try to enjoy myself.

I've never really been able to afford to travel.

Anxiety aside, money is the biggest factor that stops me, and many others, from traveling. We act like it's so easy to just stop buying cups of coffee and afford a trip to Italy, but it's not that simple.

I have massive amounts of student debt. I have a cat. I live in one of the most expensive cities in the world. But even when I lived in a smaller city in the Midwest, keeping food on the table was what weighed on my mind, not traveling.

According to the Huffington Post, the average cost of a flight to Europe from New York is $832:  That doesn't even begin to cover food, activities, and lodging. Not to mention care for my cat, and the fact that I'd still have to pay rent that month. If you looked at my savings account, you would know that it's just not possible for me right now.

People who didn't grow up well-off might find themselves in a similar mindset. Some fight it off and put any disposable income into traveling. For me, if I'm not using my money towards something tangible, it  feels like money wasted.

We tend to shame people who choose not to travel and call them materialistic. But just because some people can save for a while and eventually afford a ticket doesn't mean it's possible for everyone. Some of us don't have that money to scrape to begin with and, if we do, we use it in a different way — and that's OK.

I never thought traveling was an option.

For those who grew up in a metropolitan city or with parents who traveled often, my resistance to travel may seem absurd. But you have to understand that, for me, traveling is not a natural thing.

No one in my immediate or extended family has ever been to Europe (besides those who were born there and don't remember it). Only one has been to Asia, and that was for work. Trips outside of the US were pretty unheard of in my town.

Of course, this has changed some. As I've gotten older, more of my friends have studied abroad and traveled on their own. Hell, my friend who didn't step on a plane until she was 17 is now a flight attendant seeing the world.

It still blows my mind that my boyfriend often just drives to an airport and gets on a plane. It's just not something that seems like a "normal" occurrence for someone like me.

I've never said I wasn't stubborn, so it may just take a while for me to adjust to the fact that I could get on a plane right now if I wanted to. But until recently, it never even crossed my mind.

I've had life experiences that were just as beneficial as traveling.

So many people I know value travel experiences above anything else in life. They frequently tell me how much my life would change if I drank wine in Paris or hiked in Thailand. And maybe they're right.

But I also think that I've had life experiences that have benefited me in ways people who travel to every country in the world wouldn't get.

As a journalist, I've spoken to animal trainers, ghost whisperers, survivors of unimaginable violence, architects, and pop stars. I've been to dozens of US states, and even parts of Canada. I've camped high in the mountains and rested on beaches. I've lived next to a farm and in a high-rise. I would not call my life insignificant just because I don't have a full passport.

I consider myself a well-rounded person, though I'm sure others would not. And as I get older and (hopefully) more financially stable, I may also have an enviable Instagram.

But for right now, I'd like us all to stop shaming people for their informed life choices. What's right for you may not be right for me, and that's OK.

And if you see someone crying from fear on a plane, maybe try offering them your hand to squeeze, rather than pointing and laughing. It may just be me.

Jannik sinner vs. daniil medvedev: is this the ‘real’ u.s. open final.

No. 1 seed Jannik Sinner and No. 5 Daniil Medvedev are headed for a blockbuster quarterfinal matchup on Wednesday at the U.S. Open.

But this showdown feels more like a final, and indeed, looks like the “real” final of this fortnight.

Sinner and Medvedev are the only two Grand Slam champions remaining in the men’s draw and — with No. 2 Novak Djokovic and No. 3 Carlos Alcarz having been eliminated early — the winner will be the favorite to hoist the trophy on Sunday evening.

“Hopefully we can have a great match,” Medvedev said after destroying Nuno Borges of Portgual, 6-0, 6-1, 6-3. “I know if I want to beat him, I need to be at my best, which I managed to do couple of times. It's going to be a great match.”

Medvedev, 28, is 7-5 against Sinner, and was victorious in their most recent match, a five-set thriller in the Wimbledon quarterfinals.

But Sinner, 23, has won five of the previous six encounters, including a five-set win in the Australian Open final where he came back from two sets down for his first Slam title.

In that match, Sinner, a former junior skiing star, became the first Italian man or woman to win the Australian Open crown and just the eighth man to overcome an 0-2 deficit in a major final.

“I will try to think more about Wimbledon than Australian Open,” Medvedev, who won his only major over Djokovic in straight sets in the 2021 U.S. Open final, said with a smile.

“I feel like in a way we know our game, what we will try to bring on the table, and then it comes to always, you know, this moment's deuce, breakpoint, maybe try to surprise him or not, what he will do, what I will do.”

While Medvedev cruised in his fourth-round match on Labor Day, Sinner was tested by No. 14 American Tommy Paul, 7-6(3), 7-6(5), 6-1, during breezy conditions on Monday night.

“It's different than day sessions, but it was nice to be part of this match,” Sinner said. “You know, playing against an American here on this court in any case is difficult. Night sessions, that gives a bit more tough atmosphere. And matches, in my mind, it's nice to be part of it. We both try to make a good match out of it, which they come to see a good match.”

Sinner has seemingly moved past the pre-tournament controversy in which the world No. 1 tested positive for a banned substance but avoided punishment.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) cleared Sinner after he failed two drug tests in March, but he has always maintained his innocence, saying the amount of clostebol found in his system was less than a billionth of a gram.

Djokovic called for "clear protocols" and "standardized" approaches to doping cases while Australian Nick Kyrgios said Sinner should have been banned no matter the manner of doping, whether it was "accidental or planned.”

Still, Rafael Nadal defended Sinner.

“I have a virtue or a deficit, which is that in the end I usually believe in people's good faith. I know Sinner, I don't believe that Sinner has ever wanted to dope,” the 22-time major champion told Spanish television show "El Hormiguero.”

“I don't think we have to like it only when it is resolved in the way we think. In the end, justice is justice and I believe in justice.

“I believe in the bodies that have to make decisions and that really make them based on what they believe is right.”

Still, those close to Sinner say he has learned who his friends are — and who they aren’t — and that he has tightened his circle in the wake of this incident.

After dropping the first set in his first match against American Mackie McDonald and raising speculation that the off-court issue was a distraction, Sinner hasn’t dropped a set since.

“He's unreal out of the corners,” said Paul, who was bidding to join fellow Americans Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe in the quarterfinals . “Hits a quality ball every time the ball is on his racquet. I mean, that's kind of what separates him.”

The Sinner/Medvedev winner will get the winner between No. 10 Alex De Minaur of Australia and No. 25 Jack Draper of Great Britain in the semis. Both of those players have an excellent chance to break through to their first major semifinal.

De Minaur is into his third straight Grand Slam quarterfinal of 2024, while Draper is into his maiden major quarterfinal. ESPN’s Brad Gilbert said Draper is playing at such a high level, the 22-year-old left-hander is a “legitimate threat” to win the title.

The two Americans — Fritz and Tiafoe — are on the bottom half of the draw that has been vacated by Djokovic and will play their quarterfinals Tuesday. Fritz gets No. 4 Alexander Zverev in the afternoon session, while Tiafoe faces No. 9 Grigor Dimitrov at night.

The winners of those matches will have a full two days rest before Friday’s semifinals.

Both Americans have a legitimate shot to reach the semis, and an all-American semifinal would certainly go a long way toward bolstering the argument that American men’s tennis is on the uptick.

No American man has won a Grand Slam title since Andy Roddick at the 2003 U.S. Open. Roddick turned 42 on Friday.

“Give them a break, they know it’s been a while but they’re getting closer to coming through big time,” John McEnroe said on ESPN of the Americans.

Still, the Sinner/Medvedev winner will emerge as the tournament favorite, with Sinner looking to equal Alcaraz by winning his second major of the year and Medvedev seeking the second major of his career.

The hope for the rest of the field has to be that the two Europeans will grind each other down in a five-set epic, leaving the door open for someone else to break through.

“Obviously we have two Americans still left in the tournament, but, you know, it's never really felt this open, in a way,” Paul said.

“So I believe that one of us can do it at some point.”

Labour is facing a drop-off in confidence among business leaders amid plans for tax rises and improvements to workers' rights, according to a survey.

The Institute of Directors noted a leap in optimism in July among its membership as the new government came to power.

But its latest economic confidence index showed a slump from a three-year-high, falling into negative territory in August.

The number of hospitality establishments across the UK has grown for the first time in two years - a sign of recovery for the industry.

Between March and June there were 462 new openings of pubs, restaurants, bars and hotels in the UK - an average of five per day - according to the Nationwide Caterers Association.

The organisation said casual dining establishments in particular have experienced growth in numbers for the first time since COVID.

"While there is still a way to go for the sector to return to pre-COVID heights, tangible growth in hospitality premises is clearly a positive development and hopefully a sign of more growth to come," the association said.

Aldi is in talks with the government over planning reform in a bid to speed up the opening of new stores.

The discount supermarket is offering investment to tackle "under-resourcing" across local authorities, which is currently leading the planning application process to take more than a year, Aldi UK's national real estate director George Brown wrote in LinkedIn.

Mr Brown said to "unlock" significant investment in the UK economy, the retail sector should be given more weight in the decision-making process to reflect the number of jobs it delivers.

Aldi said in February that it plans to open 500 more stores in 2024, which would also lead to the creation of 5,500 new jobs.

An "urgent review" into dynamic pricing has been launched as the backlash from the price of Oasis concert tickets continues.

The Competition and Markets Authority said it was looking into the ticketing market to make sure consumers were being treated fairly.

Oasis fans were disappointed at the weekend when tickets for their reunion tour more than doubled while on sale due to dynamic pricing systems.

Tickets shot up from £148 to £355 on Ticketmaster within hours of their release - and while fans were stuck in long online queues.

Dynamic pricing is common within industries beyond music - it's used frequently in the travel industry, with hotel rooms and airline tickets.

"The CMA is urgently reviewing recent developments in the ticketing market, including the way dynamic pricing is being used in the primary market," a CMA spokesperson said.

They noted that consumer protection law requires businesses to be fair and transparent in their dealings with consumers.

They are also required to give clear and accurate information about the price people have to pay.

"The CMA wants fans to get a fair deal when they buy tickets," they added.

"We have already acted against major resale websites on the secondary market to ensure consumer law is being followed.

"But we think more protections are needed for consumers here, and made recommendations to the previous government in 2021 about the changes that are needed."

The government has promised to look into dynamic ticket pricing, with Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy saying it would be reviewed in an upcoming consultation.

Female founders have been dealt a "blow" after Innovate UK delivered just half the number of grants pledged in a funding competition for women business owners.

The Women in Innovation programme was aimed at encouraging women leading small to medium-sized businesses to apply for grants of up to £75,000 each.

The government-backed agency said it would be offering the grants to 50 female founders when it launched the competition earlier this year - but subsequently changed the wording to say "up to 50".

Only 25 ended up being chosen to receive funding, out of 1,452 applicants.

Dearbump and Femtech founder Emma Jarvis said in a LinkedIn post that the situation will have left many female entrepreneurs "pretty disheartened"

The post  has been shared more than 100 times and has garnered nearly 830 reactions.

"Innovate UK's decision is a blow not just to existing female founders but future ones," Ms Jarvis said. "It's really disappointing to hear that the number of awards was cut in half and that the wording was changed after the results were announced."

She said the "only way forward" was for Innovate UK to honour its original commitment of 50 awards.

Meanwhile, Patricia McGirr, Repossession Rescue founder , said female founders "deserve more than lip service".

She said Innovate UK's decision "isn't just trimming fat, it's cutting opportunity and ambition".

"This broken promise to the women fuelling our future is a step backward for innovation and a slap in the face to countless women who dare to lead."

And Debbie Porter, managing director at Destination Digital Marketing , said the move was "hard to believe".

"Innovate UK ought to go back over those 1,427 other applications as a matter of priority to fix this situation," she said.

In a statement to the Money blog, Innovate UK apologised and said its decision was a "mistake". It also said it would honour its original commitment to award 50 applicants with funding.

The added: "We recognise the impact this has had on the many applicants and on the community as a whole, and we apologise wholeheartedly.

"We confirm we will be funding a total of 50 awards."

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has refused to rule out heavier taxation on pensions in the October budget.

"I'm not going to speculate on what will be in the budget, but I'm absolutely determined to ensure that working people are better off," she told MPs in the House of Commons.

"This budget will be a budget to fix the foundations of the economy after the mess left by the previous government."

How could your pension be taxed further? Let's have a look at some of the possibilities...

Leading left-wing thinktank The Fabian Society said the government could raise at least £10bn a year by reducing pension tax relief for high earners.

At the moment, pension tax relief depends on an individual's tax band.

But Ms Reeves could create a single flat rate of tax relief for all tax bands, the society said.

"First, the rate of income tax relief should be equalised for people on all tax bands - for example at 30% of gross earnings, midway between the 20p and 40p rates of tax," the thinktank said in a report.

Ms Reeves could also reduce the maximum tax-free lump sum  you can get on retirement from £268,275 to £100,000 or 25% of pension wealth.

"The Institute for Fiscal Studies estimates that this might eventually save over £2bn per year, which would be targeted entirely at people with high lifetime earnings or assets," the report added.

Another suggestion was to charge national insurance on private pension incomes .

The organisation said it would lead to today's affluent pensioners making a higher tax contribution.

Other possibilities could be to levy income tax on all inherited pensions.

It said pension pots could also be liable to inheritance tax in the same way as other assets.

What else did the chancellor say today?

Away from refusing to rule out pension tax changes, Ms Reeves also confirmed a cap on corporation tax.

Speaking during Treasury questions, she said the tax would be capped at its current level of 25% to "give business the confidence to grow".

Corporation tax applies to the annual profits of UK resident companies and branches of overseas companies.

The 25% main rate is payable by companies with taxable profits above £250,000.

A small profits rate applies for companies with profits of £50,000 or below, meaning they will pay 19%.

Up until April 2023, the previous corporation tax main rate was 19%.

After the revival of popular Cadbury's chocolate bar Top Deck earlier this year, we asked you which discontinued treat you would like to see brought back - and we got so many responses that we've decided to make a weekly feature of it called  Bring It Back .

Every Tuesday, we'll pick one from our comments box and look at why it was so beloved and, crucially, find out whether the companies in question might consider reintroducing them.

This week we're looking at a chocolate bar that became a staple of lunch boxes in the 1980s and '90s - and spawned a TV advert that is among the most fondly remembered of the era: McVitie's Trio.

Sold in multipacks of six, each bar included three segments made up of a caramel layer over biscuit, all covered with milk chocolate.

The product became synonymous with a memorable commercial that featured an animation by artist Bob Godfrey and a play on the traditional Jamaican folk song "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)".

Its lyrics, which will be familiar to almost anyone who grew up in the 1980s, included the bar's tagline: "I want a Trio and I want one now."

Having discontinued the product in 2003, it briefly returned to shop shelves in 2016 following a Facebook campaign, before vanishing from sale again shortly after.

Hordes of Sky News readers have called for the chocolate bar's revival.

Kellie said: "I'd love to have Trios back! They were yummy. McVitie's really need to start selling them again."

Derek told us: "What a chocolate bar the Trio was! I could eat an entire multipack in one sitting now if given the chance. And that old advert... instantly transported back to childhood just thinking about it."

Samantha said: "I can hear the jingle in my head now! Trios were just delicious chocolate bars... and we want one now!"

When asked by Sky News, a McVitie's spokesperson conspicuously declined to rule out a return for the iconic chocolate treat, saying the company was "constantly listening to what audiences want".

"This helps us to keep innovating and adapting to changing tastes, meaning more biscuits and snacks you love for generations to come," they said.

"For those who miss the caramel taste of Trio, one of our newest and most exciting innovations, McVitie's Gold Billions Wafer, will be your new favourite for on-the-go chocolate moments."

And, tantalisingly for fans of the bar, they added: "Watch this space for more to come..."

Along with the legions of Trio diehards, the Money blog will certainly be doing that - and hope to bring you news of further developments in the crusade in the near future.

NatWest has launched the cheapest five-year fixed mortgage deal on the market.

The 3.71% rate comes with a £1,495 product fee and is available to customers who have a 40% deposit.

Other lenders have also announced cuts this week, including Barclays and Halifax.

Yesterday, Barclays reduced its five-year fixed 60% LTV remortgage deal from 4.06% to 3.93%.

It also announced cuts across its purchase product range, with a five-year fixed 75% LTV deal coming with a 3.95% rate and a £899 product fee.

Halifax also launched a 3.81% five-year deal to new borrowers yesterday.

Brokers have welcomed the cuts as "hugely positive" news, and suggested more lenders could follow suit.

"NatWest's latest rate cut is another clear signal that mortgage lenders are pulling out all the stops to reignite the housing market," Ranald Mitchell, director of Charwin Mortgages, told Newspage.

"This flurry of rate reductions is a positive step towards finding that sweet spot where consumer confidence rebounds, and the property market gets back on track.

"It's an exciting time for potential buyers, affordability is improving, and the window of opportunity is wide open."

Justin Moy, the managing director at EHF Mortgages, said: "Lenders are looking to grab some market share by the end of the year.

"Other lenders will likely want to make a similar move over the coming days to remain competitive."

It's a fairly muted start to the day's trading, again, on financial markets.

The FTSE 100 has opened 10 points higher at 8,373.

Rolls-Royce, the civil aerospace-to-defence firm (not to be confused with the luxury motor car manufacturer), is leading the gainers.

Its shares rallied by 4% early this morning after a 6.5% decline the previous day.

That tumbled was in reaction to the apparent mid-air failure of one of its engines on a Cathay Pacific flight .

Analysts said that the share price recovery was down to an update from  the airline that the fleet affected should be back to full operation by the weekend.

A tweet Liam Gallagher wrote seven years ago criticising the eye-watering price of gig tickets has come back to haunt him.

His message, written in September 2017 about his older brother Noel, who was touring America with his band High Flying Birds at the time, read: "350 dollars to go and see rkid in USA what a c*** when will it all stop as you were LG x"

The tweet has resurfaced after dynamic pricing for Oasis's much-hyped reunion next year left fans - many of whom had spent hours queueing online - stunned after some standard tickets more than doubled in price from £148 to £355 on Ticketmaster due to demand.

X users pointed out the irony upon seeing the 2017 tweet, posting comments including, "Well this is evergreen", "What's your excuse for charging over 368 quid then?" and "Not ageing well, Liam".

Using a phrase Liam adopts in his own social media comments, another fan wrote simply "BIBLICAL".

Hundreds of people have complained to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) over "misleading claims about availability and pricing".

In response, Sir Keir Starmer has said the government will get a "grip" on the issue of surge pricing, with Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy promising a consultation over the transparency and use of dynamic pricing, and the technology around queuing systems, to ensure fans don't get ripped off.

Yesterday we revealed that official reseller Twickets had lowered its fees after criticism from Oasis fans.

Scroll through today's Money blog for: Cheapest dates to go on holiday this year (6.42 post); how do you get free school meals (7.58 post); pay-per-mile tax proposed (7.38 post)

Basically, free school meals are aimed at making sure the country's more vulnerable youngsters don't go hungry while they're learning in their earlier years.

Children of certain ages automatically qualify without having to apply, but the rules differ across the four nations.

Children whose parents claim certain benefits or asylum support may also be eligible - though an application may be needed.

Free school meals without having to apply

In England, outside of London , all state school children in reception to year two automatically qualify for infant free school meals, while in the capital , all state primary school children up to age 11 qualify for the benefit in the 2024-25 academic year.

In Scotland , all state school children up to primary five (around four to nine years old) get the meals automatically. There are plans for this to be extended to pupils in receipt of the Scottish child payment in primary six and seven from February.

In Wales  all primary school children in state schools can get free meals from September.

Families who claim benefits

If your child falls outside the eligibility criteria for automatic free school meals, they'll still be able to benefit in certain circumstances.

Wherever you are in the UK, your child may be able to get free school meals if you get one or more of the following:

  • Income support
  • Universal credit
  • Income-based jobseeker's allowance
  • Income-related employment and support allowance
  • Support under part six of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • The guaranteed element of pension credit
  • Child tax credit
  • Working tax credit (Scotland and Northern Ireland)
  • Working tax credit run-on England and Wales) – paid for four weeks after you stop qualifying for working tax credit

There's some specific criteria for families by devolved nation, which we'll break down below...

England and Wales

If you're claiming universal credit, your net household income must be less than £7,400 after tax, and not including any benefits.

Those receiving child tax credit must not also be entitled to working tax credit and must have an annual income of less than £16,190.

If you're classed as having no recourse to public funds - a type of condition placed on temporary visas in the UK - and the parents are able to work, they must have a household income of no more than:

  • £22,700 for families outside of London with one child
  • £26,300 for families outside of London with two or more children
  • £31,200 for families within London with one child
  • £34,800 for families within London with two or more children

People claiming universal credit in Scotland must have a household monthly income of no more than £796 (£9,552 per year) to qualify for free school meals.

Families on child tax credit, but not working tax credit, can get the meals if they earn less than £19,995. For those on both benefits, their income must be no more than £9,552.

Northern Ireland

You may be able to claim free school meals in Northern Ireland if you receive universal credit and your post-tax earnings are £15,000 or less per year.

If you get child tax credit or working tax credit, you can still get free school meals on an annual income of up to £16,190.

How can I claim the meals?

In England, Wales and Scotland, you apply to your local council.

The UK government website has a local authority postcode checker here , which directs you to the council running services in your area. There are similar tools on the Scottish and Welsh government websites.

In Northern Ireland, you can use this form to apply directly to the government.

How many children are eligible - and how much does it cost?

According to the latest data from the Department for Education, 2.1 million pupils were eligible for free school meals in the 2023-24 academic year - 24.6% of pupils. This was a rise from 23.8% the year before.

According to the London mayor's office, it's estimated that school meals cost £13.25 per week - or £2.65 meal - on average.

It says its free school meals offer for all state-educated primary school children in the capital saves parents around £500 per year.

According to a 2023 report from the IFS, the current system of free school meals in England – both means-tested and universal provision – costs the government around £1.4bn a year.

But separate research from the Food Foundation found that expanding free school meal eligibility to all primary school students could generate around £41bn in direct benefits to students and a further £58bn to the wider economy over 20 years.

Tax receipts from petrol and diesel duty bring in £25bn for the Treasury each year - and questions have been raised about what happens as more drivers go electric.

Today, the public transport charity Campaign for Better Transport (CBT) is proposing that drivers of zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs), such as electric cars, should be charged based on how far they travel.

They are asking Chancellor Rachel Reeves to impose the pay-per-mile scheme, saying it's the solution to a "black hole" that will be created by the loss of fuel duty.

The scheme would not apply to drivers of traditionally fuelled cars.

Under the plan, drivers with a ZEV before the implementation date would be exempt, incentivising the switch to electric vehicles.

Previous governments have found the prospect of introducing per-mile charges - known as road pricing - to be too politically toxic.

But CBT claims it would have public support.

I’m a Travel Writer, and I Found the Ultimate Lightweight, Wrinkle-free, and Packable Pants for Work Trips

I always pack them for going straight from sightseeing to dinner.

shop and travel they don't

Travel + Leisure / Francesca Fasciglione

Any traveler knows that suitcase space is valuable, and at a premium, so it’s critical to pack clothes that can work in a variety of situations. It’s also helpful when those clothes are wrinkle-free and ready to wear right out of the suitcase.

As a travel writer and cameraman, I’ve tried just about everything to find the perfect pair of packable pants that will cover a variety of occasions, from a nice dinner to exploring a city. The Rhone Commuter Pants have quickly earned a permanent place in my suitcase for their flexibility, breathability, and overall comfort. Best of all, these travel pants don’t need to be ironed and do a surprisingly good job of staying wrinkle-free even after a flight or getting pulled out from a suitcase.

Rhone Commuter Pants for Men

Good news for travelers is that I’ve found the pants to be easy to tightly roll up and are lightweight, which means that take up little real estate in your suitcase. Shoppers have shared they often purchase multiple pairs of the Commuter Pants due to the quality and value. “This is my third pair. They can pull off a smart casual / business casual look. Great quality and they work perfect for travel,” one shopper wrote in a five-star review .

As an added benefit, most of Rhone’s clothing is infused with some great bonus features, such as anti-odor properties, which allows for more wear between washes, which can be helpful for multi-day journeys. Rhone also focuses on performance-inspired clothing, and creating a collection of colors that complement each other for the ultimate modern uniform.

As a frequent traveler, I have tried time and time again to purchase less pricey off-brand items on Amazon or other retailers hoping I could get the same result. However, nothing I’ve bought has consistently matched the flexibility, stretch, and high quality of Rhone’s pants. The pants are so comfortable, stretchy, and flexible, I’m confident that you could theoretically workout in them; however, these days, navigating an airport with luggage is a workout in itself.

For business travelers looking to upgrade their wardrobe, the brand's Commuter Shirt provides an additional wrinkle-free, iron-free option on the road. These button-up shirts is made with similar performance-based material as the Communter Pants, providing a breathable, anti-odor top to pack and wear on work trips and beyond. Rhone also has other great clothing for just about any occasion: find quarter-zip sweaters , shorts , and workout apparel all at their Amazon storefront . Rhone also offers a large variety of golf apparel , which can also make for easy travel clothes due to their comfort and flexibility.

If you’re interested in more of Rhone’s packable clothing, check out more pieces below, including shirts, shorts, polos, and more.

More Rhone Clothes at Amazon:

Rhone swift short sleeve 2.0, rhone men's commuter dress shirt, rhone men's versatility pant, rhone 9" mako men’s shorts, rhone delta pique men’s polo.

Americans don’t just want to travel: they want to go abroad

Early in the pandemic, pretty much everyone stopped traveling. By last year, the summer of 2022, air travel had largely rebounded — for domestic trips. But international travel still hadn’t caught up to pre-pandemic levels.

But now it’s come back, with travel abroad — especially to Europe — surging this summer. And that has consequences for airlines and airfares.

In the last year, consumers’ COVID-19 hesitation — about getting on a crowded plane, breathing recirculated air — has basically vanished, said Lindsey Roeschke at public opinion firm Morning Consult.

And, with most COVID-related restrictions on Americans entering other countries now gone, “the share that say they’re going to travel internationally in the next year is up about 9 points,” Roeschke said. “And it definitely is stealing some share from domestic travel.”

That’s hurting low-cost carriers that fly primarily domestic routes, including JetBlue, Spirit and Southwest, said analyst Chris Raite at Third Bridge.

But the shift is benefiting Delta, American and United, which have more international routes. “Fares hit record levels for this summer from the U.S. to Europe,” Raite said.

He said those airlines are also catering to better-heeled travelers: “The mainline carriers have for the most part all reconfigured their cabins to the premium leisure traveler, those who are a bit more affluent, who are willing to spend, say, an extra $100 for extra legroom on a flight.”

Airfares overall are down about 8% from a year ago : that’s mostly driven by domestic airfares falling. And Raite expects the trend to continue.

No More Excuses: 5 Reasons Why People Don’t Travel

People have many reasons for not traveling. While some of these reasons may be legit, the majority are minor excuses and can easily be dissected. Many people want to travel more, but they let small fears and concerns get in their way. A survey done by  OnePoll  showed that 76% of people questioned wanted more travel in their lives than they currently had!

That same survey showed that 11% of people have never left the state they were born in and 32% of people don’t own or can’t remember ever buying luggage!

So why do people not travel?

Here are 5 reasons that people don’t travel:

Too busy to travel

It’s easy to feel busy and overwhelmed. We have jobs and school, hobbies and extracurriculars, friends and families, and the list goes on and on. There’s no shortage of busyness in the lives we live. The craziness of life can deplete us, and a break or vacation is just the thing to rejuvenate and refresh ourselves. No one is too busy. Big or small, a little preparation is all it takes to overcome this hurdle. Tell people “no, I can’t.”, take a week or weekend off, put aside the busyness and excuses, and plan that next trip.

shop and travel they don't

Fear controls everything we do and it’s no exception when traveling. Maybe you’re worried about getting lost, or missing a connection. It could be that you’re afraid of being in unfamiliar areas or countries. It might even be the fear of language barriers and cultural differences. Whatever it may be, it’s easy to let fear control your thoughts and actions. In the beginning, we were worried about different languages and our inability to communicate and get from one place to another. It ended up being much easier than we anticipated and it actually became fun to learn phrases in different languages.

Even with a lack of communication, there are ways to connect and get around. After your first experience, you’ll realize it’s not as scary as you may have thought. You’ll come to understand that travel is exciting and adventurous and that fears can be overcome. A new world opens up as you step outside of your comfort zone.

Traveling is too expensive

This concern or excuse can mostly be attributed to the false glamour we see on social media. So-called “influencers” show themselves traveling in elaborate ways and doing crazy luxurious things all over the world. This false advertising is exactly that, false. There are travel options that fit everyone’s budget. With a little extra planning and research, travel can be extremely affordable. I’ve discussed using credit cards to fly for free and this can extend into all travel expenses. Everything can be done affordably and it’s unfortunate that high price tags are always associated with travel. We spent a four-day weekend in Puerto Rico and we only paid for food. Soon we’re headed to Japan and it’s going to be extremely affordable. We often shop at grocery stores, bring our own water bottles, and make our own meals to keep costs down. As budget travel becomes more common and popular, anyone can do it.

Limitations

There are indeed limitations that make it harder to travel. We are extremely grateful that we don’t have serious limitations that prevent us from doing what we love. In our case, however, we do have allergy limitations. Laynie has Celiac and it has certainly changed the way we travel. I use change because it has in no way slowed or stopped our ability to see the world. We’ve found that countries outside of the US have tons of gluten-free options and in many cases, they’re more knowledgeable than restaurant workers here.

With limitations such as allergies, it takes a little more effort to overcome the concerns, but it can be done. We plan ahead by bringing additional snacks, we use more caution when buying food, and we walk an extra 100 feet to celiac-friendly restaurants. Whatever your limitation may be, do a little research and prove to yourself and others that travel is still possible and available for anyone.

You don’t want to

It’s true that some people just don’t want to travel. I used to get confused when people would tell me they don’t like to travel, or that they like to travel in different ways from us. Everyone is passionate about different things, and that’s ok. Find what you love and do it! If you change your mind, you can always come back to our site and learn more about traveling! Or, we hope this blog has inspired you to want to travel!

Conclusion:

There are many reasons why people don’t travel. Some are valid, but many are simple rationalizations that can and should be overcome. No more excuses. Traveling is an incredible experience. Your mindset will change and you’re life will be filled with a deeper understanding of the world. Whatever the reason may be, find your reason to travel. You’ll be glad you packed your bags and took a trip.

Don’t shop for travel at work

It is probably not a good idea to shop for leisure travel from the office during business hours, according to a new study from Rice University and Iowa State University.

Young Couple Shopping Online

Using data from a major online hotel reservation site, the study examined the quality of the hotel that consumers chose for their vacations and subsequently how satisfied they were with their stay. They found that consumers who traveled farther and made reservations during business hours were more likely to select higher quality hotels but were less satisfied after their stay. More than 35 percent of those studied made purchases during business hours.

“We were interested in understanding when people make more expensive purchases and their satisfaction afterward,” said Ajay Kalra, the Herbert S. Autrey Professor of Marketing at Rice’s Jones Graduate School of Business. He co-authored the paper with Wei Zhang, an assistant professor of marketing at Iowa State’s College of Business. The paper will be published in the Journal of Marketing Research.

Where Kamala Harris Stands on the Issues: Abortion, Immigration and More

She wants to protect the right to abortion nationally. Here’s what else to know about her positions.

By Maggie Astor

  • Published July 21, 2024 Updated Aug. 24, 2024

With Vice President Kamala Harris having replaced President Biden on the Democratic ticket, her stances on key issues will be scrutinized by both parties and the nation’s voters.

She has a long record in politics: as district attorney of San Francisco, as attorney general of California, as a senator, as a presidential candidate and as vice president.

Here is an overview of where she stands.

Ms. Harris supports legislation that would protect the right to abortion nationally, as Roe v. Wade did before it was overturned in 2022, in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

After the Dobbs ruling, she became central to the Biden campaign’s efforts to keep the spotlight on abortion, given that Mr. Biden — with his personal discomfort with abortion and his support for restrictions earlier in his career — was a flawed messenger. In March, she made what was believed to be the first official visit to an abortion clinic by a president or vice president.

She consistently supported abortion rights during her time in the Senate, including cosponsoring legislation that would have banned common state-level restrictions, like requiring doctors to perform specific tests or have hospital admitting privileges in order to provide abortions.

As a presidential candidate in 2019, she argued that states with a history of restricting abortion rights in violation of Roe should be subject to what is known as pre-clearance for new abortion laws — those laws would have to be federally approved before they could take effect. That proposal is not viable now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe.

Climate change

Ms. Harris has supported the Biden administration’s climate efforts , including legislation that provided hundreds of billions of dollars in tax credits and rebates for renewable energy and electric vehicles.

“It is clear the clock is not just ticking, it is banging,” she said in a speech last year , referring to increasingly severe and frequent disasters spurred by climate change. “And that is why, one year ago, President Biden and I made the largest climate investment in America’s history.”

During her 2020 presidential campaign, she emphasized the need for environmental justice , a framework that calls for policies to address the adverse effects that climate change has on poor communities and people of color. She has emphasized that as vice president as well.

In 2019, Ms. Harris, then a senator, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democrat of New York, introduced legislation that would have evaluated environmental rules and laws by how they affected low-income communities. It would have also established an independent Office of Climate and Environmental Justice Accountability and created a “senior adviser on climate justice” within several federal agencies. In 2020, Ms. Harris introduced a more sweeping version of the bill. None of the legislation was passed.

Ms. Harris was tasked with leading the Biden administration’s efforts to secure voting rights legislation, a job she asked for . The legislation — which went through several iterations but was ultimately blocked in the Senate — would have countered voting restrictions in Republican-led states, limited gerrymandering and regulated campaign finance more strictly.

This year, she met with voting rights advocates and described a strategy that included creating a task force on threats to election workers and challenging state voting restrictions in court.

She has condemned former President Donald J. Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. In a speech in 2022 marking the anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, she said that day had showed “what our nation would look like if the forces who seek to dismantle our democracy are successful.” She added, “What was at stake then, and now, is the right to have our future decided the way the Constitution prescribes it: by we the people, all the people.”

Economic policy

In campaign events this year, Ms. Harris has promoted the Biden administration’s economic policies, including the infrastructure bill that Mr. Biden signed, funding for small businesses, a provision in the Inflation Reduction Act that capped the cost of insulin for people on Medicare and student debt forgiveness.

She indicated at an event in May that the administration’s policies to combat climate change would also bring economic benefits by creating jobs in the renewable energy industry. At another event , she promoted more than $100 million in Energy Department grants for auto parts manufacturers to pivot to electric vehicles, which she said would “help to keep our auto supply chains here in America.”

As a senator, she introduced legislation that would have provided a tax credit of up to $6,000 for middle- and low-income families, a proposal she emphasized during her presidential campaign as a way to address income inequality.

Immigration

One of Ms. Harris’s mandates as vice president has been to address the root causes of migration from Latin America, like poverty and violence in migrants’ home countries. Last year, she announced $950 million in pledges from private companies to support Central American communities. Similar commitments made previously totaled about $3 billion.

In 2021, she visited the U.S.-Mexico border and said : “This issue cannot be reduced to a political issue. We’re talking about children, we’re talking about families, we are talking about suffering.”

More recently, she backed a bipartisan border security deal that Mr. Biden endorsed but Mr. Trump, by urging Republican lawmakers to kill it , effectively torpedoed. The legislation would have closed the border if crossings reached a set threshold, and it would have funded thousands of new border security agents and asylum officers. “We are very clear, and I think most Americans are clear, that we have a broken immigration system and we need to fix it,” Ms. Harris said in March .

Israel and Gaza

Ms. Harris called in March for an “immediate cease-fire” in Gaza and described the situation there as a “humanitarian catastrophe.” She said that “the threat Hamas poses to the people of Israel must be eliminated” but also that “too many innocent Palestinians have been killed.”

In an interview later that month , she emphasized her opposition to an Israeli invasion of Rafah, the city in southern Gaza to which more than a million people had fled. “I have studied the maps,” she said. “There’s nowhere for those folks to go, and we’re looking at about 1.5 million people in Rafah who are there because they were told to go there, most of them.”

She has said on multiple occasions that she supports a two-state solution.

Racial justice

Racial justice was a theme of Ms. Harris’s presidential campaign. In a memorable debate exchange in 2019 , she denounced Mr. Biden’s past work with segregationist senators and opposition to school busing mandates.

She has called for ending mandatory minimum sentences, cash bail and the death penalty, which disproportionately affect people of color.

Amid the protests that followed the police killing of George Floyd in 2020, she was one of the senators who introduced the Justice in Policing Act, which would have made it easier to prosecute police officers, created a national registry of police misconduct and required officers to complete training on racial profiling. It was not passed.

Her record as a prosecutor also came into play during her presidential campaign. Critics noted that as attorney general of California, she had generally avoided stepping in to investigate police killings.

GCSE results day 2024: Everything you need to know including the number grading system

shop and travel they don't

Thousands of students across the country will soon be finding out their GCSE results and thinking about the next steps in their education.

Here we explain everything you need to know about the big day, from when results day is, to the current 9-1 grading scale, to what your options are if your results aren’t what you’re expecting.

When is GCSE results day 2024?

GCSE results day will be taking place on Thursday the 22 August.

The results will be made available to schools on Wednesday and available to pick up from your school by 8am on Thursday morning.

Schools will issue their own instructions on how and when to collect your results.

When did we change to a number grading scale?

The shift to the numerical grading system was introduced in England in 2017 firstly in English language, English literature, and maths.

By 2020 all subjects were shifted to number grades. This means anyone with GCSE results from 2017-2020 will have a combination of both letters and numbers.

The numerical grading system was to signal more challenging GCSEs and to better differentiate between students’ abilities - particularly at higher grades between the A *-C grades. There only used to be 4 grades between A* and C, now with the numerical grading scale there are 6.

What do the number grades mean?

The grades are ranked from 1, the lowest, to 9, the highest.

The grades don’t exactly translate, but the two grading scales meet at three points as illustrated below.

The image is a comparison chart from the UK Department for Education, showing the new GCSE grades (9 to 1) alongside the old grades (A* to G). Grade 9 aligns with A*, grades 8 and 7 with A, and so on, down to U, which remains unchanged. The "Results 2024" logo is in the bottom-right corner, with colourful stripes at the top and bottom.

The bottom of grade 7 is aligned with the bottom of grade A, while the bottom of grade 4 is aligned to the bottom of grade C.

Meanwhile, the bottom of grade 1 is aligned to the bottom of grade G.

What to do if your results weren’t what you were expecting?

If your results weren’t what you were expecting, firstly don’t panic. You have options.

First things first, speak to your school or college – they could be flexible on entry requirements if you’ve just missed your grades.

They’ll also be able to give you the best tailored advice on whether re-sitting while studying for your next qualifications is a possibility.

If you’re really unhappy with your results you can enter to resit all GCSE subjects in summer 2025. You can also take autumn exams in GCSE English language and maths.

Speak to your sixth form or college to decide when it’s the best time for you to resit a GCSE exam.

Look for other courses with different grade requirements

Entry requirements vary depending on the college and course. Ask your school for advice, and call your college or another one in your area to see if there’s a space on a course you’re interested in.

Consider an apprenticeship

Apprenticeships combine a practical training job with study too. They’re open to you if you’re 16 or over, living in England, and not in full time education.

As an apprentice you’ll be a paid employee, have the opportunity to work alongside experienced staff, gain job-specific skills, and get time set aside for training and study related to your role.

You can find out more about how to apply here .

Talk to a National Careers Service (NCS) adviser

The National Career Service is a free resource that can help you with your career planning. Give them a call to discuss potential routes into higher education, further education, or the workplace.

Whatever your results, if you want to find out more about all your education and training options, as well as get practical advice about your exam results, visit the  National Careers Service page  and Skills for Careers to explore your study and work choices.

Apple’s AirPods Pro are some of our favorite wireless earbuds — I wear mine daily while running, walking around New York City and on calls at work. I live in a multi-pet household, so I constantly remove pet hair from furniture, carpets, and my clothes. This little tool makes that task very easy. To use Chom Chom’s pet hair remover , you roll it over hair, which gets collected inside the tool’s chamber. Then, when you’re done cleaning, you press a button on the handle to open the chamber and dump out the hair. Chom Chom’s roller is simple to use and highly effective, plus I love that it’s reusable.
