A cinque anni dall’indimenticabile concerto all’Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone, Sting è pronto a fare ritorno il 14 luglio 2023 al Roma Summer Fest per un imperdibile appuntamento del suo My Songs. Aprirà il concerto Joe Sumner .

Il My Songs è uno spettacolo dinamico e divertente che si concentra sulle canzoni più amate scritte dall’artista durante la sua prolifica carriera come solista e frontman dei Police, costellata di successi e premi tra cui 17 Grammy Awards. Dopo il sold out delle sei serate al London Palladium, “My Songs” è stato definito "una masterclass" dal Times; " Sting rimane un interprete innegabilmente abile con un catalogo d'oro ".

Un viaggio musicale che comprende successi come "Fields of Gold", "Shape of my Heart", "Roxanne" e "Demolition Man", il concerto è stato descritto come " una rara delizia " dal The Telegraph e Sting è stato elogiato come " quasi impareggiabile " dal The Guardian con una " sublime alchimia pop ". I fan potranno ascoltare anche "Englishman In New York", "Every Breath You Take", "Message In A Bottle" e molte altre. Durante il tour, Sting suonerà come sempre accompagnato dalla sua band.

Sting – My Songs Tour 2023

Sting will perform on Friday, July 14, 2023, starting with 9.00 pm, at the Cavea amphitheater, in Rome , as part of the Roma Summer Fest 2023 .

Besides the concert in Rome, the artist will also appear on stage in Mantua , on July 11, and in Nichelino, near Turin , on July 12.

The band released five albums, won 6 Grammys, 2 Brit Awards and in 2003 was included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

As a solo artist, over the course of his career, Sting received 10 Grammy, 2 Brit Awards, 1 Golden Globe, 1 Emmy, 4 Oscar nominations, a TONY nomination, the Billboard Magazine’s Century Awards and the MusiCares Person of the Year in 2004.

To date, he sold almost 100 million albums (including albums released with The Police and solo albums).

ROMA SUMMER FEST

Roma Summer Fest is a summer music festival produced by the Musica per Roma Foundation in a unique venue – Auditorium Parco della Musica.

Many important Italian and international artists performed at the previous editions of the festival, such as Elton John, Sting, Bjork, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Paolo Conte, José Carreras, Patti Smith, Arctic Monkeys, Simple Minds, Ringo Starr, Mogwai, Franz Ferdinand, Steven Tyler, Sting and Shaggy.

Besides Sting, other names confirmed so far for the 2023 edition of the music festival are OneRepublic , Pet Shop Boys , Mariza and The Lumineers .

THE VENUE OF ROMA SUMMER FEST 2023

Auditorium Parco della Musica, designed by Renzo Piano and completed on December 21, 2002, represents a complex of halls dedicated to music, in particular, and to art, in general.

The Cavea is an open-air amphitheater in the heart of the Auditorium, which can accommodate up to 3,000 spectators.

Auditorum Parco della Musica is located in Largo Luciano Berio, in the northwest of Rome.

The closest bus stop is De Coubertin/Auditorium , located about 110 meters away, on the bus Lines 53, 168, 910 and 982. The closest tram stop is Apollodoro , located about 300 meters away in Piazza Apollodoro, on the tram Line 2.

Sting: My Songs Tour

Sting, brani cult e note di nostalgia: l’Englishman seduce Roma. Sul palco anche il figlio Joe Sumner…

Quelli che, alla fine degli Anni Settanta, hanno visto nascere - ed esplodere - il fenomeno Police, con Roxanne. E quelli che, invece, negli Ottanta, lo hanno conosciuto come solista, con If You Love Somebody Set Them Free e Nothing Like the Sun. Quanti lo hanno “scoperto” nei Novanta, con la rilettura di Demolition Man, o nel Duemila, con Desert Rose. E i tanti – forse la gran parte - che non rammentano quando e come hanno sentito la sua musica per la prima volta, ma oggi sanno e cantano tutti i brani a memoria, come fossero i loro. È stata una platea varia per età, storia, anche gusti, ad accogliere, forse sarebbe meglio dire celebrare, Sting, ieri, nella Capitale, con il live My Songs, alla cavea dell’Auditorium Parco della Musica – l’ultima volta aveva suonato qui cinque anni fa - nell’ambito del Roma Summer Fest.

Brano dopo brano, quasi in un sonoro “dot to dot”, il gioco di unire i puntini, Sting, accompagnato dalla sua band, ha selezionato alcuni dei successi che hanno segnato il suo percorso e - a giudicare dai testi gridati a tutta voce dai presenti - anche la vita di molti altri. Sì perché le sue canzoni, sottolineate tali già nel titolo, tra sentimento, ricordi e volontà di rinnovarle e trasformarle, si sono rivelate patrimonio collettivo, tasselli di una memoria sonora – ed emotiva – condivisa, capace di risvegliare o accendere emozioni forti. Eccoli allora i nostalgici commossi sin dalle prime note di Messagge in a Bottle. E i puristi pronti a storcere un poco il naso, ascoltando lievi variazioni in alcuni passaggi musicali, come se la rilettura, pur autoriale, fosse un tradimento. Poi gli amanti della buona musica, entusiasti sulle note di Englishman in New York, i cultori, animati dal dibattito su Mad About You, ricordandone la versione italiana, Muoio per te - qui canta con Giordana Angi in Amore - e Fields of Gold, di cui Sting registrò anche una versione con i Muvrini, gruppo musicale di lingua corsa. Perfino i curiosi, desiderosi di sentirlo dal vivo, e quelli dell’«io c’ero» che ai grandi eventi non mancano mai, pronti, cellulare alla mano, a pubblicare sui social una storia con Every Breath You Take come colonna sonora.

Più o meno cresciuto, ma sempre entusiasta, il suo pubblico era lì. E Sting, quell’englishman che si è creato ad arte – perfino in famiglia lo chiamano così, “dimenticando” il vero nome, Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner – si è rivelato il ragazzo di sempre: voce delicata, sonorità che sfiorano la pelle e toccano l’anima, sorriso un po’ sornione di chi ha vinto la sfida con il tempo che passa e, soprattutto con le mode che travolgono. Lo sa bene lui che, con l’aria da Peter Pan - stessa magia ma meno ingenuità - ama giocare, tanto da aver ribadito di voler continuare a fare musica come fa, alla sua età, Mick Jagger, che di anni ne ha solo qualcuno in più.

Poco importa che ad aprire il concerto sia suo figlio Joe Sumner, classe 1976 – leader dei Fiction Plane, accostatosi alla musica, conquistato da Nevermind dei Nirvana e ora in scena sulle sue orme – il più “giovane” della serata è sempre Sting, con le sue radici punk, lo spirito rock, le malinconie che si fanno pop ballad e qualche “vertigine” jazz. Il resto è show, letteralmente. Dinamico, effervescente, ribelle e seduttivo, capace di far balzare tutti in piedi suonando So Lonely o di infiammare animi e memorie con la sensualità da tango di Roxanne. E di far scendere qualche lacrima, con il pensiero al conflitto in Ucraina e alle guerre di ogni tempo, suonando Fragile. Non è solo questione di testi, a giudicare dalle reazioni della platea. A farsi brivido e scossa è una partitura di emozioni di ieri e dell’attimo, la colonna sonora rock-romantica di una notte stellata, in un corteggiamento a più voci, dove Sting è un irresistibile Cyrano. Perciò, quando canta If it’s love - «Se è amore, devi arrenderti», recita il testo - il pubblico si abbandona, vinto, cancellando ogni «se».

Sting to Tour North America as a Trio (Not That One)

Sting announced that he’ll be hitting the road this fall as part of his Sting 3.0 tour with drummer Chris Maas (who previously collaborated with Mumford & Sons and Maggie Rogers) and guitarist Dominic Miller, his longtime collaborator.

While the frontman won’t heading on a reunion tour with his former Police bandmates, Sting 3.0 promises to celebrate “a new dynamic era showcasing selections from his vast catalog through the urgent lens of a tight three-piece combo.”

Members of Sting’s fan club will get first dibs to pre-sale tickets on  sting.com starting Monday, followed by pre-sales for Citi and American Express members throughout the week. General ticket sales will be available Friday at 10 a.m. local time on the website.

Although Police fans may be hoping for another reunion tour, Sting has said that their 2007/08 tour would only happen once. “When the Police reunited, it had been long enough, and it was the right time to do it,” he told Music Week in a 2023 interview. “And I’m taking credit for that because that was my decision. Doing it again would just be gratuitous and that won’t happen. But we did it, and everyone was happy that mum and dad got back together again and had one last fling.”

Sting Showcases The Importance Of The Rock Era To Our Culture...

The Police ‘Roxanne’ was released 45 years ago. That is how long a lot of us have had Gordon Sumner (aka Sting) in our lives.

In 2023 the Sting setlist spans from then until now with three new songs coming early in the set, preceded with an apology. Sting explained that part of the deal in us hearing the old was having to sit through the new. The new, however, flowed between the old with ease, so much so that I would imagine a good chunk of the audience will be checking out the latest Sting album ‘The Bridge’ today.

Placing a bracket of three new songs was like having a cigarette after sex off the back of the opening trilogy of ‘Message In A Bottle’, ‘Englishman In New York’ and ‘Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic’. Those first three songs were authentication of why we were all there. Three classics at the start of the show, all 30 or 40 years old, every piece iconic, everyone entrenched in our culture.

At 71, Sting is a Rock and Roll elder. Dylan is 81, McCartney 80, Jagger 79, Waters 79, Rod Stewart 78, Elton 75, Springsteen 73. Sting is certainly now part of a limited group of superstars still generating arena level crowds in their twilight years.

The closing run was equally iconic with The Police classics ‘Roxanne’, ‘Walking On the Moon’, ‘Wrapped Around Your Finger’ and (with son Joe Sumner), ‘King of Pain’ and ‘Every Breath You Take’.

Sting was also very active with the audience, telling stories of the songs. I had no idea ‘So Lonely’ evolved out of the Bob Marley classic ‘No Woman No Cry’. The second album title by The Police should have been the giveaway. ‘Regatta d’Blanc’ literally translates as ‘White Reggae’. Speaking of hidden messages, Joe’s band’s name Fiction Plane is an anagram of Infant Police.

The Police was such a short but potent part of the Sting timeline with five albums released over five years. Sting’s solo catalogue spans 38 years. ‘My Songs’ is not a greatest hits setlist. Four songs from the middle of this set focused in the 1993 album ‘Ten Summoners Tales’.

As I alluded at the start, there are certain artists who we are privileged to enjoy now. In coming years, a lot of these legends will no longer be performing. While some legends perform in their 80s, very few are still doing it in their 90s. The Renaissance of the Rock era from Chuck Berry, Elvis and The Beatles and Stones through to the last great rock era of Grunge, with Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana was finite and did not regenerate in the 21st century.

If Harry Styles is the future, God help us all.

Classic songs take the Sting out of the weather...

Sting took a highly entertaining trip through his illustrious back catalogue on Saturday as he brought his My Songs tour to Geelong.

Held at Mt Duneed Estate in occasionally rainy conditions as part of the A Day on the Green concert series, the 90-minute show saw the 71-year-old sling on a head mic and his well-worn bass and keep the rhythm going through a setlist comprising mostly his own material but also some enormous hits from The Police.

With so many great songs both as a solo artist and with his former band, only completists would be disappointed with the 21 tunes played on the night.

Highlights included letting the backing singers show off their talents during “Heavy Cloud No Rain” and “Shape of My Heart”, smashing “So Lonely” into a brief detour into Bob Marley’s “No Woman No Cry”, and Sting’s occasional introductions to some songs, such as his musings on how broken hearts are useful to write a good love song.

“I’m not some callow youth singing about something he knows not of; I have real estate there,” he said.

“But you know the most boring love song? ‘I love you, and you love me’ – that’s a closed loop, there’s no way inside that story.

“Whereas ‘I love you, but you love somebody else’ – now that’s interesting. It’s painful, but it’s interesting.”  

Sting brought out eldest son Joe Sumner (who played his own songs earlier as a support act) to trade lead verses on “King of Pain” and sing backing vocals on “Every Breath You Take”.

The two-song encore started with an extended, groove-filled version of “Roxanne” and ended with Sting switching from bass to acoustic guitar for “Fragile” – “At the end of the night, it’s my custom to play something quiet and thoughtful so you go home quiet and thoughtful,” he remarked.

James Reyne was the other support act and powered through a tight, punchy set made up of both his own songs and those recorded with Australian Crawl.

The next concert at Mt Duneed Estate is the Tent Pole music festival, to be held on Saturday, March 4 and featuring Pavement, Magic Dirt, Spiderbait and nine other bands.
