Port guide: what to see and do on a cruise ship excursion in Stornoway

Make the most of a cruise ship stop in the Outer Hebrides’ captivating capital with a guide to what to see and do, where to eat and which souvenirs to buy on a cruise excursion in Stornoway

A firm favourite on the BBC’s shipping forecast, Stornoway is the capital of Scotland’s Outer Hebrides , an ancient chain of islands home to magical white-sand beaches, awe-inspiring landscapes, remarkable wildlife, fresh seafood and an unrivalled peace and serenity.

Located on the east coast of Lewis, the most northerly of all the Western Isles, Stornoway began as a Viking settlement and is now a thriving port of call. While many cruise lines feature the islands’ largest town on their itineraries, the much-anticipated new Deep Water Terminal – currently under construction – is expected to be a game changer for cruise visitors because larger ships will no longer need to tender passengers in.

What to do on a cruise excursion in Stornoway

I first fell in love with Stornoway, and subsequently the Outer Hebrides, on a ship’s excursion. Although it’s a lively gateway to the islands, it remains unspoilt and has plenty to offer visitors.

Popular excursions provided by cruise lines cover the celebrated highlights of Lewis: the superb monolithic Callanish Standing Stones on the west coast, the historic Gearrannan Blackhouse Village, and Rib adventures along the coastline where you can spot seals, dolphins, basking sharks and dramatic sea caves.

Pre-dating Stonehenge at more than 5,000 years old, the world-famous Callanish Standing Stones are not only free, they are also open year-round. And unlike their southerly counterpart, touching them is permitted, meaning you can feel a connection with the most mysterious stone circle in Britain.

A short drive away is another must-see: the Gearrannan Blackhouse Village features a group of authentically restored thatched crofters’ cottages, so you can step back in time and experience a bygone Hebridean lifestyle.

Which of the Outer Hebrides islands can you visit on a cruise?

The island of Harris, adjoining Lewis to the south, is blessed with jaw-dropping, Caribbean -style beaches and turquoise seas, but given the distances involved, Harris is more likely to be covered by a private car or minibus tour.

Several ships offer day trips with assigned drivers, so although it is possible to rent your own car – and there is only one road south, so you won’t get lost – it may be a little daunting to attempt in a limited time frame.

But if you do wish to be independent and go off-piste, Stornoway is a safe place to explore and has lots to do within easy reach of the picturesque port. The Town Hall houses the Harris Tweed Authority, where you can watch skilled weavers working the looms to produce this unique cloth.

Then browse the Harris Tweed Hebrides shop for jackets, coats, bags and accessories in a myriad of colourful weaves.

What is Stornoway famous for?

The Stornoway Smokehouse on Shell Street is renowned for its mouthwatering, whisky-cured smoked salmon, cheese, and peat-smoked kippers (if your cabin doesn’t have a fridge you can always order online for delivery at a later date).

And if you’re a fan of black pudding you’re in the right place, because Charles Macleod Butchers sells award-winning, gourmet black or white puddings that are second to none.

There is a cluster of excellent coffee shops in the town: Artizan, No.9, Kopi Java and my favourite, The Blue Lobster, are all very popular, as is antiques emporium Lewis Revival, full of eclectic, fascinating collectables.

It’s well worth visiting Lews Castle too, an imposing Gothic Revival-style castle built in the mid-1800s and set in lovely grounds overlooking the harbour. And don’t miss the Museum nan Eilean next door: immersive and interactive, it gives both historical and contemporary insights to the Hebrides, with well-presented exhibits including several of the original, iconic Lewis Chessmen.

Port Stornoway cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Stornoway, Isle of Lewis and Harris, Scotland. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Stornoway is a port town on Isle of Lewis, part of Scotland's Outer Hebrides (Western Isles). The town has population around 8,000, ranking it biggest in the Hebrides. Stornoway is a major seaport of Outer Hebrides, serving both passenger ships ( ferries and cruise liners) and cargo ships.

Stornoway harbour houses small shipyard, slipway (boat ramp), boat marina (with yacht moorings), 3 large docking piers (for commercial ships), Stornoway Lifeboat Station (run by Royal National Lifeboat Institution). Here is homeported a large fishing fleet and Tom Sanderson (lifeboat). HMCG (UK coastguard) operates the Maritime Rescue Sub Centre is also housed in the harbour area.

In 2007, were proposed plans for building an undersea tunnel between Harris and Lewis and mainland Scotland (Stornoway- Ullapool ). One of the possible routes would be over 40 mi (60 km) long - ranking it the world's longest road tunnel.

The annual Hebridean Celtic Festival (HebCelt) is a 4-day event in July attracting over 10,000 tourists. Black pudding is a popular gourmet dish with PGI status - granted by European Commission to prevent puddings produced elsewhere to be marketed as "Stornoway". Stornoway is best known for Harris Tweed Hebrides (UK's main producer of the fabric), Callanish Stones (5000-years-old arrangement of standing stones), Lewis Chessmen (12th-century chess pieces carved from walrus ivory), Gearrannan Blackhouse Village (Holiday accommodation complex), also some of the UK's/world's most picturesque beaches. The town's most notable buildings include Lews Castle, Stornoway Town Hall, Lewis War Memorial, Lewis Loom Centre, Lanntair (modern art centre with gallery, auditorium, bar, restaurant).

In 2017, the cruise port handled a total of 43 ship calls. In 2019 were handled 57 ship calls and ~16,500 cruise tourists, arriving mostly on smaller-sized vessels. Maiden port calls in 2019 made Queen Victoria ( Cunard ), Hanseatic Nature ( Hapag-Lloyd ), Le Champlain ( Ponant ), Zuiderdam ( Holland America ), AIDAaura ( AIDA ), Crystal Serenity ( Crystal Ocean ), Star Pride ( Windstar ).

In February 2021, Stornoway Port Authority received GBP 48,6 million (~EUR 56.6M / ~USD 66,75M) for building a new deepwater cruise terminal with capacity to handle even the world's largest passenger ships (with max LOA length 360 m / 1181 ft and max draught 10 m / 33 ft). Works on the new facility started in April 2022 and were initially scheduled for completion in May 2023, but the inauguration was eventually postponed to 2024. The new Deep Water Terminal also allows homeporting operations as Stornoway is a good departure port for ex-UK itineraries to Iceland and the Faroes. The port is also an overnight crossing to/from Belfast , Greenock-Glasgow , Invergordon and Kirkwall .

Stornoway cruise terminal

Ferries and cruise ships to Lewis and Harris Island dock at Stornoway - port town on the eastern coast. The ferry terminal is operated by CalMac Ferries - the largest ferry (passenger and vehicle shipping) operator between mainland Scotland and 22 large islands on the country's west coast.

Ferry port's address is "Ferry Terminal, Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, HS1 2AE". Passenger terminal's opening hours are:

  • (Winter months) Monday to Friday (5:45 am - 7 am / 9 am - 5 pm), Saturday (9 am - 2:30 pm) and Sunday (12-midnight - 2:30 pm).
  • (Summer months) Monday to Friday (5:45 am - 7 am / 9 am - 5 pm), Saturday (5:45 am - 7 am. / 9 am - 3:30 pm) and Sunday (6:45 am - 8 am / 12-midnight - 3 pm).

CalMac Ferries between Stornoway and Ullapool offer 3 daily crossings, with travel time 2,5 hours.

New cruise berth Pier 3 (Deep Water Terminal)

In 2018, Stornoway Port Authority started tendering for the design of a new (ferry and cruise-dedicated) berth with capacity to serve world's biggest passenger ships . The design project was completed in May 2019. Construction works were planned to start in December 2019, with scheduled completion by June 2022. However, due to the COVID crisis, the project was postponed to 2022-2024.

On April 12, 2022, Stornoway Port Authority awarded a GBP 49 million (EUR 56,6M) construction contract to McLaughlin & Harvey (1853-founded building and civil engineering company). The Deep Water Terminal (multi-purpose facility) was scheduled to be ready and operational for season 2024.

The new cruise terminal is at Pier 3 (downtown Stornoway) and also serves the Stornoway-Ullapool ferries . The ferry terminal building provides modern amenities (including WCs, free Wi-Fi, information, tour booking, car rentals, etc) for both cruise and ferry passengers. Tourists are greeted by a voluntary group of Stornoway Cruise Ambassadors who provide complimentary maps, info and advice on the region's most popular activities.

Before the port development 2022-24 (Deep Water Terminal), the cruise port had capacity to handle only ships with max LOA length 156 m (512 ft). Larger vessels were anchored and their passengers were transported/ferried ashore via the ship's tender boats. The new deepwater quay allows berthing of liners with max LOA length 360 m (1181 ft), which results in bigger annual cruise shipping traffic (up to 40 vessels) and increased tourist numbers, meaning more revenues to the Outer Hebrides economy.

Funded in part by the Western Isles Council (Comhairle nan Eilean Siar) and home to the Stornoway Historical Society, this museum was opened as part of Lews Castle and now is the best place to witness and engage with the history that Stornoway offers like the Lewis Chessmen.

The museum is home to a wide range of artefacts, clothing, maps, and papers that take you from the beginnings of Stornoway to the present.

To fully appreciate the town of Stornoway and understand how far it’s come, take an hour or two at the Museum nan Eilean.

Harris Tweed Story Room

There’s no tweed as well-known and spoken of like Harris tweed, and its origins start in Stornoway and the Outer Hebrides.

The Harris Tweed Story Room and Harris Tweed Hebrides is a brilliant way to engage with a crucial part of Stornoway’s growth and notoriety, with authentic tweed machines, clothing, and samples that weave the material’s narrative from the past to the present.

Lews Castle Grounds

At the heart of Stornoway town is the gorgeous Lews Castle, styled in the classical Scottish baronial architecture and is a building, once owned by Sir James Matheson, that has been a part of Stornoway and Lewis since 1847.

Sometimes known as Stornoway Castle and restored by the Western Isles Council, the surrounding castle grounds now play host to cosy accommodation and many vibrant shops. A stroll around the grounds is the perfect way to watch the hustle and bustle of Stornoway town centre while having a picnic with the family.

The Stornoway Trust has also constructed a series of woodland walkways around the grounds for visitors to enjoy as they admire the well-maintained grounds.

Those thrifty visitors to the Isle of Lewis will be doing themselves a disservice by not visiting Bethesda Charity Shop, near Cabarfeidh Hotel & Caladh Inn.

All pre-loved items you can find here go to a great cause, so you won’t feel bad about purchasing yourself an entirely new wardrobe while here.

You won’t find better bargains on high-quality thrift clothing than at Bethesda Charity Shop. Who knows, you may even find yourself a bit of Harris Tweed.

The Centre also has outdoor seating and serves as an excellent pet-friendly place to eat, a crucial bonus to natural retreats like this one.

The excellent dining experience offers great meals like soups, sandwiches, incredible coffee and cakes, and holiday specials galore.

Stornoway Balck Pudding is especially a local Outer Hebrides delicacy worth trying at the Woodlands Centre and their fantastic selection of brunch items and local coffee and teas.

Arnish Point Lighthouse

Constructed in 1852, the Arnish Point Lighthouse has acted as a guardian for Stornoway and the Outer Hebrides ever since and now proudly stands on the south beach between the Isle of Lewis and the ocean.

Just a short trip from Stornoway, the Arnish Point is a pretty highlight as you continue the road along the east coast of the Isle of Lewis.

A highlight of a visit is when walking around Arnish Point and witnessing the incredible views towards the Inner Hebrides and the beautiful south beach.

Stornoway Harbour

The heart of Stornoway is Stornoway harbour, an amazing place to sit and witness trade flowing in and out of the Outer Hebrides while eating at one of the many restaurants on Cromwell street.

Those brave enough should also join one of the many guided boat tours available from Stornoway Harbour that allow you to explore the Outer Hebrides, Steering Bay, and the Isle of Lewis from the waters.

As the lifeblood of Stornoway, missing out on a visit to Stornoway Harbour is like missing out on Stornoway itself.

Hebridean Adventures

Their cruises guide you through the Outer Hebrides’ waters and reveal Scottish whales, dolphins, and even more of the ocean’s splendid creatures.

Angelic choirs echo through Stornoway when mass occurs at the St. Columba’s church, named after the Irish Abbot who spread Christianity throughout Scotland and the Outer Hebrides.

It sits in Stornoway as the go-to temple for residents on the Isle of Lewis, with much of Stornoway and Lewis observing closures on Sunday to rest.

Whether your visit is for religious reasons or you want to look at the beautiful colours and atmosphere that St. Columba offers, it’s well worth the site search to appreciate this stunning church.

Tiumpan Head Lighthouse

Watching over the Outer Hebrides, with its powerful light rhythmically flashing over the Western Isles in the distance, is the spectacular Tiumpan Light House.

This feat of engineering is a beautiful working lighthouse complex that’s just a short walk through grassy pastures. It gives onlookers incredible views not only of this regal white-and-gold lighthouse but of the beautiful ocean beyond it.

The Tiumpan Head Lighthouse is a great way to appreciate the true isolation of the Point on the Isle of Lewis.

Walk the Hebridean Way

There is no better way to fully experience the wondrous Outer Hebrides than to walk the 252-kilometre Hebridean Way.

This daunting task is not for the faint of heart but will give you an adventure like none you’ve experienced before.

Black pudding is delicious, made from pork or beef blood and mixed with oats into a sausage shape.

The top contenders for the best Black Pudding on the Isle of Lewis are Charlie Barley’s, Willie John, and MacLeod & MacLeod, but it’s definitely worth it to try them all to see what your taste buds prefer.

Gress Beach

The beautiful Gress beach is just outside of Stornoway, with sublime white sands and gorgeous blue water that’s perfect for a beach day with the family and a relaxing afternoon filled with sunbathing and sandcastle-building.

If you can summon the courage to enter the colder Hebridean seas like the locals, this beach is a peaceful place to dive and enjoy the refreshing seawater and air.

Want a second away from the hustle and bustle of Stornoway? Gress beach is the perfect place to do so.

Alladin’s Cave

Alladin’s Cave is an adorable novelty shop found by the harbour of Stornoway. It is a family-owned business that sells a wide range of toys, gifts, local fabrics and materials but is primarily known for its knitting yarn and needles.

As you’re wandering the town’s streets, it’s difficult not to be caught by the colourful shop and its many intriguing items on display.

They cater to the many realms of arts and crafts with paints, maps, pins, posters, and tapestries to hang up in your study or on your wall back home.

Whether you’re interested in looking just for the novelty or serious about taking home a souvenir for your friends and family, Alladin’s Cave is just the place to spend your time exploring.

Sightseeing:

Stornoway is the main town on the Isle of Lewis and is also the home of the Western Isles Council. Just over 6,000 people live in the town, which represents about a third of the Islands total population.  The economy is a mix of traditional businesses like fishing, Harris Tweed and farming, with more recent influences like Tourism, the oil industry and commerce brought about by the digital revolution and communications.

The Isles of Lewis and Harris are at the North west corner of the group of Islands known as the Hebrides, or Western Isles. The Hebrides are known as the "long island" as they stretch for 100 miles.

Stornoway is the main port on the Island, due to its sheltered location with the ferry to Ulapool a regular visitor. The sheltered harbor is the reason for Stornoway's existence and was named by the visiting Vikings "Steering Bay" which, when phonetically translated, became the name Stornoway.

Lews Castle. Overlooking Stornoway harbor, the impressive Lews Castle (not Lewis Castle) was built in the mid 1800's by a rich merchant called Sir James Matheson of the Jardine Matheson company. Sir James bought the island of Lewis in 1844, developed this wonderful woodland area and built his mock Tudor castle. Lord Leverhume bought the building, complete with the island, in 1918, and in 1923 gave it back to the people of Lewis. Following completion of refurbishment in 2016, the Castle is now open to the public. It accommodates a fantastic museum of the Western Isles' history and culture; has a restaurant and conference center. It is well worth a visit!

Visa, Mastercard and Maestro, are accepted by most shops and restaurants.

Stornoway Port Authority

Situated 30 miles off the north west coast of Scotland, Stornoway harbour serves as the gateway to the Outer Hebrides.

As the main seaport of the islands, it offers a wide variety of facilities to accommodate a number of industries including tourism, fishing, marine leisure and commercial shipping.

As the primary ferry port for the Outer Hebrides, over 95 percent of all visitors to the Isle of Lewis travel through Stornoway harbour and it is a regular port-of-call for visiting cruise ships.

Stornoway Port Authority ensures the harbour is maintained to the highest standards, offering a secure and scenic passage to the Outer Hebrides.

Stornoway is situated 30 miles off the North West coast of Scotland. It is the main seaport of the Hebridean Island chain and provides a vital link to mainland Britain.

This lively bustling town has everything you would expect of a modern Commercial Port as well as including one of the leading slipway facilities on the West Coast and islands. As the largest settlement on the Outer Hebrides, Stornoway is the central hub of the islands, providing daily links to the mainland by ferry or plane.

The airport is situated just 4km from the Port, linking the island by air with Glasgow, Aberdeen, Inverness and Edinburgh. There is regular public transport in the form of a bus service and taxi ranks throughout Stornoway.

A marina with a total of 70 berths for vessels up to a maximum length of 24 metres is situated at the north end of the Inner Harbour.

The 70 berths are available all year round. Berths can be allocated to visiting vessels although there is a great demand for these berths during the summer months. In order to ascertain berth availability prior to arrival you should contact the Harbour Office during working hours, or the Duty Watchkeeper after hours and at weekends.  In any event, visiting boats should give one hour’s notice to the Harbour Watchroom on Channel 12 VHF. With brand new facilities for 2014 there is fresh water readily available on the pontoons, along with shore power and Wi-Fi.

The idyllic harbour town provides ample opportunity to explore the culture and tradition of Lewis that makes it so unique today. The Port of Stornoway is the gateway to the beautiful Outer Hebrides and is well equipped to accommodate cruise ships and passengers. The primary cruise liner facility is at Number 3 Pier, capable of taking vessels up to 156 metres length with a maximum draft of 6.5 metres. Reception facilities are readily available in the main Ferry Terminal adjacent to this berth. Smaller vessels may be accommodated at the Number 1 Pier. A cruise liner tender landing pontoon is available by the Ferry Terminal at Number 3 pier. Upon disembarking their vessel, passengers are greeted by the Stornoway Cruise Ambassadors, a voluntary group who provide information and advice on the island’s tourist attractions, and distribute maps of the town centre to all passengers.

FACILITIES:

  • Nearest Airport: Stornoway Airport
  • Number of Pontoon Berths: 70
