The Agony Scene: “We basically broke up after six months of touring, then dropped off the face of the earth” – Interview

The Agony Scene

The Agony Scene

Having been on tour solidly for 2005 in support of their blistering second album The Darkest Red , The Agony Scene know more than most about commitment to one’s passions. musicOMH caught a few minutes with their master of guttural screams, Mike Williams, to hear a little about faith and freedom of expression.

With tours alongside the likes of Danzig , Throwdown and Lamb Of God under The Agony Scene’s belts in recent months, it seems that the band’s metal apprenticeship is earning them a great deal of respect.

This prospect is made all the sweeter for the band after it emerges that they nearly never made a second record: “We basically broke up after six months of touring on the first record, then [as a band] dropped off the face of the Earth! Then eventually we got it back together; we had almost a year to write the new record, which was a real benefit that not many bands get these days, but it means we’re so happy with it.”

The Agony Scene’s “first record” was produced by none other than Killswitch Engage ‘s Adam D. Apart from being a headline-grabbing experience it was one that would inspire the metalcore lads in the recording of their latest record: “With Adam, it was pretty much business the whole time we were in the studio. We just worked from day to night, and although we didn’t really get to hang out he was awesome – so professional – and we were able to learn a lot in those sessions.”

“To say ‘Jesus’ on stage – that takes a lot of balls man!” – The Agony Scene frontman Mike Williams admires bands with spiritual convictions…

The Darkest Red also saw The Agony Scene switch to heavyweight record label Roadrunner from the indie surroundings of Solid State. The latter is known for its spiritual leanings but Williams explains that their relationship was more of an opportunistic one: “In the beginning, honestly, we saw them as a vehicle for our music. I mean, we’re from a really small place [Tulsa, Oklahoma] and they were interested in our music! We were playing out of basements and garages then, so we thought: ‘Yeah, let’s make a record!’ Obviously along with that we also thought: ‘Let’s just face the consequences of being labelled something we’re not for the sake of getting to put out our music, and see where it goes.'”

Williams then proceeds to set the record straight regarding the band members and their personal convictions: “Uh, I don’t know what I am, I don’t know what I believe in, I won’t say that any one group is wrong or right you know? I grew up in a very Christian home, and so I had all that, but I’m not at a place where I know what I believe. The other guys in the band, yeah they’re pretty much the same.”

“Uh, I don’t know what I am, I don’t know what I believe in.” – … But his band isn’t one of them.

However, he acknowledges that there is a role for “faith” in heavy music: “Ultimately, I think music is an expression of yourself, a very pure expression of your raw emotions. If your passion is Jesus Christ or not eating meat, or Satan – if that’s what you feel you need to write about, that’s cool. So be it. I accept everybody, it doesn’t really put me off if people are saying things about faith in bands, especially to say ‘Jesus’ or whatever on stage – that takes a lot of balls man! But, believe what you want to believe man, it’s cool.

“I’m not a Christian by any means, but I’m friends with a lot of bands that are, and there is a pressure you know? It’s way more prominent in the States, but they view it like ‘this is a lifestyle we lead just like straight edge or being vegan. This is what we believe in, and we may write songs about it because this is our passion.’ Those guys are the coolest people and often I get on with those bands way better than some who are out partying all the time ’cause I’m more of a mellow guy when it comes to that sort of thing.”

So if rock ‘n’ roll touring hasn’t resulted in Williams becoming a party animal, what has it done for him? “It’s made me very humble man. Sometimes when you play a show, it’s awesome, and sometimes the crowd hate you and it’s crap. I’ve learnt to appreciate the fact that I’m so lucky to be here and be able to do what I do. It’s a f**king privilege to be doing what we get to do on stage so, you know, thinking like that is helpful to me ’cause it keeps me humble.”

And with that, this “humble” and “mellow” guy returns to his cramped tour bus to catch some shut-eye before yet another Agony Scene show.

A Fragile Peace

The new hell, vii the fraudulent, little drummer boy, internal cannon, someone to hate, heralds (acoustic), the world is a thorn, tie this around your neck, blood in the gears, take me home, bring it down, heavy lies the crown, achilles - the backbreaker, the agony scene.

Tulsa, OK has never been what one might consider a Petri dish for talent. Besides being the hometown of now fading stardom of the Hanson brothers, Tulsa is little more than a restroom break when you're going across country. All of that is about to change with the birth of Tulsa natives The Agony Scene and their debut self titled release that drops on June 10, 2003. With viper like subtlety the Agony Scene's debut starts with a ferocious bite. There's little build up except for a short swell of distortion and what soon transpires happens with such utter abandon that it can only be compared to some vulgar stigmata-like appearance. The band has transformed over the years from a spastic math / hardcore band to a legitimate technical metal beast, frothing at the mouth to be let loose on the world. Produced by Adam Dutkiewicz, guitarist and mastermind of Killswitch Engage and man behind the knobs for label-mates Norma Jean as well as others, the band's self-titled release combines American metal, ala "Far Beyond Driven" era Pantera, with European bands like In Flames, The Haunted and even the mighty Cradle Of Filth. Few American bands have captured this kind of ferocity on wax but The Agony Scene have taken hold of it and called it their own quite nicely. Another startling example of The Agony Scene's distinctiveness is the band's lyrics. They're, well, intelligent and allegorical, something sadly missing from the current crop of "My Mom and Dad suck!" diatribes that mix with enough bad poetry to make Keats himself roll over in his grave. Each song tells a story and it's cast of characters are as varied as a John Waters film. If the music business doesn't pay the bills they at least have a literary crutch to fall back on! If some have given up on American metal they have to look no further than The Agony Scene's debut to find that there is indeed hope coming over the horizon and The Agony Scene will be the valiant musicians to bring it into the future.

The metalcore landscape has changed dramatically since The Agony Scene called it a day in 2008.

Despite reuniting and touring over the last few years, Tormentor marks their first new material in over a decade, and while Mike Williams’ larynx-shredding vocals remain a piercing focus, the songs have evolved from competitive run-of-the-mill stompers to fully formed beasts.

Shorn of yesteryear’s ’core-isms, Tormentor rips with vicious licks and blasts of extremity straight from the ugly thrash stampede of Hand Of The Divine onwards.

Favouring uncomfortable atmospheres over breakdowns and choruses, the likes of the swirling Like The Weeds In The Field and melodic death metal march of The Ascent And Decline are the sound of a band revitalised.

A few similar tempos result in a dip before Serpent’s Tongue lashes out, putting an exclamation point on an impressive resurrection.

Adam Brennan

Rugby, Sean Bean and power ballad superfan Adam has been writing for Hammer since 2007, and has a bad habit of constructing sentences longer than most Dream Theater songs. Can usually be found cowering at the back of gigs in Bristol and Cardiff. Bruce Dickinson once called him a 'sad bastard'.

Screen Rant

Planet of the apes included a great charlton heston cameo 41 years after his last appearance.

The Planet Of The Apes franchise included a special cameo from its original star, in the 2011 reboot movie, 41 years after his last appearance.

  • Charlton Heston's legacy in the Planet of the Apes franchise lives on in a brief Rise of the Planet of the Apes cameo.
  • The use of Heston's The Agony and the Ecstasy in the movie serves as a subtle nod to the franchise's conflicts between humans and apes.
  • Heston's special appearance in the 2011 reboot pays touching tribute to his iconic role.

The celebrated franchise Planet of the Apes paid tribute to the original movie's star in a subtle and touching manner, 41 years after his last appearance. Originating from the 1963 French novel, La Planète des singes by Pierre Boulle, the first movie Planet of the Apes was released in 1968 , starring Charlton Heston. Since then, the franchise has seen the release of nine further movies across its timeline ; a tenth movie, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, is scheduled for release in May 2024.

Throughout his career, Charlton Heston starred in several critically successful blockbusters, including The Ten Commandments (1956) and Ben-Hur (1959), the latter of which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor. His role in Planet of the Apes is regarded as one of the best of his movie career, and he made several appearances across the franchise. Although Heston passed away in 2008, the 2011 reboot Rise of the Planet of the Apes included a special cameo that paid tribute to the original star 41 years after his last appearance.

One Of Charlton Heston's Movies Is Featured In Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes

His movie the agony and the ecstasy plays in the ape shelter.

The use of The Agony and the Ecstasy, which depicts the conflict between Michelangelo and Pope Julius II, is a subtle reference to the conflict between humans and apes in the Planet of the Apes franchise.

The 2011 movie Rise of The Planet Apes serves as a prequel to the original story, depicting the beginning of the ape rebellion against humans. In this movie, a genetically enhanced ape named Caesar is taken to a primate shelter, where the apes are subjected to immense cruelty. During a scene where Landon brings some friends on a tour of the shelter, a movie is shown to be playing on the television screen above them; this movie is the 1965 drama The Agony and the Ecstasy, where Charlton Heston plays the role of Michelangelo.

The use of The Agony and the Ecstasy, which depicts the conflict between Michelangelo and Pope Julius II, is a subtle reference to the conflict between humans and apes throughout the Planet of the Apes franchise. It is one of several hidden references the 2011 prequel makes to the 1968 movie (via Film Buff Online ). While it is only a brief cameo, compared to his previous appearances in the franchise , it allows Heston to appear once more in one of the most recognized sci-fi franchises ever made.

10 Ways A Planet Of The Apes Remake Can Improve On The Original 1968 Classic

Rise of the planet of the apes' heston cameo honors the franchise's past, it is a subtle and poignant tribute to the original star.

Despite the remakes and reboots released over the years, the original Planet of the Apes , released in 1968, has been recognized as one of the most iconic movies ever made. It has been praised for its faithfulness to the original novel, costume design, and unusual concept. The final scene is considered one of the greatest sci-fi twist endings in history and Charlton Heston's performance as George Taylor is credited for having carried the story through.

The decision to use Heston's movie in Rise of The Planet of the Apes was a clever way of referencing him in the reboot. It is a subtle reminder to viewers of his iconic role in the original movie . While the reboot movies in the Planet of the Apes franchise have been successful, this special cameo is a touching and poignant tribute to the original movie's star.

Rapper quavo’s empty arena show sparks wild chris brown conspiracy theory.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Quavo

American rapper Quavo performed for a mere handful of fans at a recent concert, sparking a wild conspiracy theory that his music rival was responsible for the poor turnout.

The former member of the massive hip-hop group Migos also has a slew of solo hits, but it seems that wasn’t enough to coax punters out to a headlining show at Hartford Healthcare Ampitheater in Bridgeport, Connecticut over the weekend.

The venue has an audience capacity of more than 5,700, but in footage from the show, it seemed an audience of barely more than a few hundred had turned up to see the rapper.

Those who did front up crowded together at the front of the stage, with the rest of the venue virtually empty.

Rapper Quavoâs empty arena show sparks wild conspiracy theory

So what happened? In the absence of an actual explanation, a far-fetched rumour has circulated on social media that Quavo’s rival Chris Brown had bought up all the tickets to the show, leaving the star to think he’d be stepping on stage to a huge crowd.

“Chris Brown evil for this, apparently he bought all the tickets at the Quavo concert just so the crowd is empty,” one person tweeted.

“Chris Brown bought majority of the tickets for Quavo’s show. This is pure Savagery,” said another fan.

Many others on social media have stated the rumour as fact – although some questioned just how dastardly an act it would be to buy up thousands of tickets to a music rival’s show.

Sure, they’d have to face a near-empty crowd – but you were the one spending a fortune buying all the tickets, with the money going into their pocket.

QUAVO

Brown is yet to publicly comment on the speculation, but it seems logistically unlikely that he’s to blame, especially as fans are interpreting Brown’s alleged act as a response to a  diss track Quavo released  only three days ago.

It may just be that, despite having sold millions of records solo and as part of Migos, Quavo struggled to shift tickets to this particular show.

And he’s in good company: Only a few weeks ago, another top US rapper, Nelly, made headlines when he performed to a near-empty arena in Florida.

There, the story had an even bigger sting. Nelly’s show was in fact a free concert offered to students at the University of Florida.

Despite this, a crowd of only a few hundred turned up to the 10,000 capacity arena.

The reason will make you feel old: One student who did attend confessed that many of the students just weren’t familiar with the noughties rapper or his music.

‘Running tens of thousands in debt from the tour and I’m being told that it’s normal’ … Arooj Aftab performing in Brooklyn in June 2023.

‘The working class can’t afford it’: the shocking truth about the money bands make on tour

As Taylor Swift tops $1bn in tour revenue, musicians playing smaller venues are facing pitiful fees and frequent losses. Should the state step in to save our live music scene?

W hen you see a band playing to thousands of fans in a sun-drenched festival field, signing a record deal with a major label or playing endlessly from the airwaves, it’s easy to conjure an image of success that comes with some serious cash to boot – particularly when Taylor Swift has broken $1bn in revenue for her current Eras tour. But looks can be deceiving. “I don’t blame the public for seeing a band playing to 2,000 people and thinking they’re minted,” says artist manager Dan Potts. “But the reality is quite different.”

Post-Covid there has been significant focus on grassroots music venues as they struggle to stay open. There’s been less focus on the actual ability of artists to tour these venues. David Martin, chief executive officer of the Featured Artists Coalition (FAC), says we’re in a “cost-of-touring crisis”. Pretty much every cost attached to touring – van hire, crew, travel, accommodation, food and drink – has gone up, while fees and audiences often have not. “[Playing] live is becoming financially unsustainable for many artists,” he says. “Artists are seeing [playing] live as a loss leader now. That’s if they can even afford to make it work in the first place.”

Potts, who works at Red Light Management – home to everyone from Sabrina Carpenter to Kaiser Chiefs and Sofia Kourtesis – feels like there is an industry equivalent of the Spider-Man meme in which they are all pointing to one another. “People who work at labels think bands make loads of money touring, while booking agents think they make loads of money on publishing and so on,” he says. “Everyone thinks artists make money from the other side of the industry they’re not involved in.

“Artists are the biggest employers in the industry. They pay for the tour manager, session musicians, agent, manager, crew, insurance, travel, accommodation, equipment, rehearsal space, production. Everything. I don’t think people know this is all the stuff that the artist pays for and does.”

Lily Fontaine of English Teacher performing in 2022.

“Greater transparency is needed,” says Lily Fontaine, lead singer of Leeds band English Teacher. On paper, the four-piece appear to have made it. They are signed with a major label, Island, have played on Later With … Jools Holland, get healthy BBC Radio 6Music airplay, their debut album has received five-star reviews and they are about to embark on their biggest tour to date, which includes an 800-capacity home-town show.

“The reality is that it’s normal for all of these achievements to coexist alongside being on Universal Credit, living at home or sofa surfing,” says Fontaine. During the making of their debut album, she and bandmate Lewis Whiting did the latter while unable to afford rent.

In their four years of existence, English Teacher have yet to turn a profit from touring. “We’ve never directly paid ourselves from a gig,” says Whiting. “A headline tour usually comes out with a deficit. The only thing that we ever make any kind of profit on is festivals, because the fees can be higher, but any money left over just goes towards the next outgoings.” A successful show for the group in the past has been defined by whether they can flog enough merch to afford a supermarket food shop.

So how do they survive? “In the world of artists, we’re in a lucky position,” says Whiting. “We try to pay ourselves £500 a month each from the band pot.” However, they’ve been reliant on their advance for this, which is now gone. “We’re now in that stage where we’re gonna have to figure out where that £500 a month is gonna come from,” says Fontaine. “Because the gig fees won’t be able to cover that.” The band estimate that their 16-date UK tour in May will generate roughly £800 profit. But, says Fontaine, “realistically, I don’t think there will be any profit because things always go over budget”.

For many artists, fees aren’t increasing in line with costs. “There’s been no real incline at all,” says Potts. “For support slots, I don’t think the fees have changed in the last 10 years or so that I’ve been managing, whether that’s £50 at the smaller end or £500 quid for some of the biggest shows.” Fees for headline shows can vary enormously for bands, even on the same tour. Playing a 200-capacity club in Newcastle may land you £600, while a 1,500 cap in London may net you £3,000.

And fewer people are coming to shows at the small-to-mid-sized end of things. “In our audience data, we see there is a gap in new audiences coming through post-pandemic,” says the FAC’s Martin. “As well as a bit of a drop-off in some of the older audiences returning to live shows.” However, despite stagnant fees and shrinking audiences, touring activity in the UK is at a peak. Due to the costs of touring Europe (which can be thousands in taxes and carnet alone) 74% fewer UK bands are now touring Europe post-Brexit. “It’s much more difficult to tour in Europe so there are more artists trying to perform domestically,” says Martin. “That creates a saturation problem.”

For this article, the Guardian has seen 12 tour budget sheets for various bands and artists varying from up-and-comers to firmly established and successful acts, all of whom regularly undertake headline tours across the UK in venues ranging from 150 to 2,500 capacity. Almost all of these result in losses. Understandably, most shared their balance sheets on the condition of anonymity. One four-piece indie band, whose last two albums went Top 10 in the UK charts, reported a loss of £2,885 from a six-day UK tour. The only tour that shows anything resembling healthy profit was a 29-date tour for a solo artist who came away with £6,550. Not bad going for a month’s work but, as Martin points out, “that’s then his touring done for the next six months. So it’s not enough money.”

‘It’s getting more difficult, without a shadow of a doubt’ … Nubiyan Twist.

Nubiyan Twist are a nine-piece Afro-jazz outfit who have a loyal following and tens of millions of streams on Spotify, “We pride ourselves on being able to put on a big show, like your Fela Kutis or James Browns, these epic spectacles,” says bandleader Tom Excell. “But it’s getting more difficult, without a shadow of a doubt.” For an upcoming eight-show tour of Europe, they are predicting a loss of £4,931.28. The only way they can justify doing it is because they got funding from the BPI Music Export Growth Scheme. “I would have just pulled the plug if it wasn’t for that,” says Excell. “I’ve got a two-year-old and I can’t be away from home for that long and come back with a loss.”

Even when the band get more lucrative fees for festivals it’s still tough. They will be paid £5,000 for a festival performance this summer but the total profit after band wages (as Excell pays all his band members in full first) expenses and commissions are paid out will be £277.60. “After four albums and 15 years doing this, to still be having to gamble on whether I’m going to make anything, while everyone else gets paid a guaranteed amount, is a struggle,” admits Excell.

Such thin margins leave little wiggle room, as the space-surf band Japanese Television (who headline 100-300 capacity venues) found out when their booking agent reduced their 13-date UK and EU tour to eight shows with a five-day gap in the middle that will add a further loss of around £1,200 to a tour that is already set to lose them around £700. “Records and T-shirts are basically what keeps us going,” says the band’s Tim Jones. “The only way this tour is working for us is because we just put out our second album and we did about 60 presales on the vinyl and that was basically enough to pay for the van. It’s a hobby that just about pays for itself.”

after newsletter promotion

The question is: who else will be able to afford to pursue music as a hobby? “It depresses me how many middle and upper class people there are in the music industry,” says manager Potts. “Because the working class just can’t afford to fork out £150 a day for van hire. The only artists doing that are people who have deeper pockets and can afford to take the hit.”

Of course, every act is different in terms of what they justify as reasonable outgoings and not everyone has the same costs, but Potts says from his experience, generally speaking, bands with four or five members now need to be playing 2,000+ capacity venues nationwide to “really start to see things tip”. That tipping point is out of reach for the majority. “Most people don’t actually get to that level,” Potts says. “Just look back at any festival lineup from 10-20 years ago and see which names are still on festival bills and how many you’re like: what happened to them?”

The gap between those who are flying and those who are floundering has become even more stark. “It feels like the top 1% have become the top 0.5%,” says Martin. “The level of artists we’re talking about here that are struggling to make things stack up financially would really surprise people.”

In 2022, the Grammy-winning Pakistani singer Arooj Aftab posted on X: “Touring has been amazing. We headlined a ton, had massive turnouts and have proven ourselves in all the markets. Yet still, running tens of thousands in debt from the tour and I’m being told that it’s ‘normal’. Why is this normal? This should not be normalised.”

I’m told that one US artist – who released one of the most critically acclaimed albums of 2023, which went Top 10 and placed very highly on numerous year-end polls and was nominated for a major award – worked out that the only way she could make her UK tour work was by sub-letting her home.

Workers in Singapore prepare the merch stand for Taylor Swift’s Eras tour earlier this year – the tour is set to break a billion dollars in revenue.

It’s a far cry from Taylor Swift’s record-breaking Eras jaunt. “The very high end of the live industry is reporting record profits,” says Martin. “You can’t have a healthy music ecosystem where at one end you’ve got people going ‘we’ve made more money than we’ve ever made’ and at the other end you’ve got relatively successful artists that are sofa-surfing while signed to a major label.”

Is there an answer? “When you’re touring Europe, you realise how much state funding in the arts there is,” says Excell. “It really needs more state funding and support from the top down.”

Martin echoes this. “The government needs to start looking at spending money on the music industry as an investment rather than as a cost,” he says. “But you also need to support a sector in a time of crisis. And this is a time of crisis.”

Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell in "Anyone But You."

Anyone But You finally made its Netflix streaming debut, which is exciting news for rom-com fans everywhere. As you watch the movie, you might be wondering where Anyone But You was filmed and if you can visit the breathtaking beaches, cliffs, and other locations in real life.

Loosely adapted from Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing,” Anyone But You stars Glen Powell as Ben, a finance bro who has an incredible first date with Bea (Sydney Sweeney), a law student uncertain about her career. After spending the night, Bea panics and leaves without telling him. When she realizes she made a mistake and returns to his apartment, she overhears Ben saying that she is a “nothing” to him.

Years later, they unexpectedly reunite at a destination wedding in Australia for Bea’s sister, who is marrying Ben’s friend. When their exes show up, they pretend to be a couple—and the rest is history. The film was directed and co-written by Will Gluck, the filmmaker behind rom-coms like Easy A and Friends with Benefits . It was released in December and had an impressive run at the box office, surpassing $88 million domestically and $219 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo .

After its release, the movie went viral on TikTok as audience goers reacted to the film’s credit sequence, which features the cast dancing and singing to Natasha Bedingfield’s nostalgic 2004 hit “Unwritten,” a song highlighted throughout the film. There were also rumors of an off-screen romance between Powell and Sweeney that helped promote the film, as well as the actors’ flirty publicity tour and Sydney Sweeney’s SNL monologue .

Now, Anyone But You is back in the limelight after the film was released on Netflix on April 23, quickly becoming the No. 1 movie on the platform in the U.S. after just one day.

Anyone But You was filmed in parts of Australia around New South Wales and Sydney. Director Will Gluck told The Hollywood Reporter that he wanted the film set in Sydney because he had “really fallen in love with the city” and liked it so much he moved his family there.

“Almost every time you shoot a movie in Sydney, you have to pretend it’s somewhere else and frame out the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. For Anyone But You , I thought, “Why do that?” We actually wrote this movie 100 percent for Sydney — very specific to the destination,” Gluck wrote.

The director continued, “We flew helicopters all over — seeing the city from that vantage point is stunning — and landed one at the Opera House, shut down the Harbour Bridge, filmed at the Queen Victoria Building, and shot for two weeks overlooking Bondi Beach,” he said. “We spent a week on a boat in Sydney Harbour shooting a scene where they’re stranded on a buoy, but you can’t have humans in the water without a shark cage, so we had to have one the whole time. You pinch yourself. It’s so unbelievable we were actually doing these things.”

Here are a few specific Anyone But You filming locations you can visit in person.

Sydney Opera House

The Sydney Opera House is a focal point in Anyone But You. The 20th-century architectural landmark serves as a gorgeous backdrop for big moments, including the end scene when Ben passionately kisses Bea, who is standing at the top of the steps. You can visit the performing arts center for special events and tours.

Marks Park, Bondi

Located in Sydney's northern suburbs, the wedding scene in Anyone But You was filmed at Marks Park overlooking Bondi Beach and the Pacific Ocean. The cliff-top park is open to the public and has fitness stations, a playground, and some shaded areas.

Many of Anyone But You ’s breathtaking beach scenes were filmed around Palm Beach. Director Will Gluck told THR that one of the best parts of filming was on location in Palm Beach, a suburb in the Northern Beaches.

“Our caravans were parked right on the water, and Glen and Sydney and I decided to live there the whole time. We’d shoot all day and all the crew would go home, then we’d jump in the water and have a swim, go to our trailers and have dinner sitting outside,” he said. “It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world, and you normally wouldn’t be allowed to sleep there. It was probably the most fun I’ve ever had filming.”

Madonna is taking a minute to honor her kids.

On Thursday, April 25, the singer, 65, shared a series of behind-the-scenes photos on Instagram of herself and her kids from the past few months after they joined her on stage during her Celebration Tour. In the first photo, Madonna is surrounded by three of her six kids — son David, 18 and twins Estere and Stella, 11 — as they engulf her in a group hug.

Other photos show David and Madonna playing guitar together, daughter Mercy, 18, getting a kiss on the cheek from one of her sisters, as well as scenes of all of them on stage with their mother.

"On the day before our 80th show of the Celebration Tour I need to acknowledge my incredibly talented children who carried me through this Journey each of them bringing their own unique talent to the stage," the proud mom began in her caption.

"Rehearsals began over a year ago with almost a 2 month break waiting for me recover from a near death experience. They never stopped practicing… they never stopped cheering me on and supporting me," she continued. "There [sic] enthusiasm kept me Going!!!"

"They were also going to school and rehearsing every night. !! . am so very proud of all of them. I think what my children learned the most this year of rehearsing and performing is that if you who to follow your dreams, you have to work hard for them."

"And if all of them choose something different later in life, they will never forget this year of blood, sweat, and tears. Nor will I. ♥️ It’s a CELEBRATION," Madonna ended her caption.

In an interview with  W. Magazine earlier this week, the "Material Girl" singer spoke about her Celebration Tour , which concludes in the coming weeks with a few stops in South America.

"When I go on tour, nothing brings me more happiness than to know we are all working on the same show, creating the magic together," the proud mom said. "It would be boring if they were just traveling from hotel to hotel, and occasionally coming to watch the show."

"Of course, I am their mother so sometimes we get on each other's nerves. We are a family of artists but we are also a family, and that's what happens."

Madonna is mom to six kids — Lourdes, 27, Rocco, 23, David, Mercy, and twins Stella and Estere. Her son David and daughters Mercy, Stella and Estere joined her on stage for this tour.
