Announced today (December 11), the tour dates will see the band play a series of live shows across the country in celebration of their latest studio album ‘EBM’ .

From there, the band will make a stop at the O2 Academy in Liverpool on February 28 for their last show of the month, before picking up again in March for three back-to-back shows. As aforementioned, the new run of 2024 UK shows comes in celebration of Editor’s latest studio album ‘EBM’. Released in September last year, the album marked the band’s seventh LP and saw the members venture into new, electro-industrial territory.

Recommended

Upon its release, ‘EBM’ was given a three-star review by NME , who described it as containing “flashes of their very best”.

“Unlike their early records, on ‘EBM’, Editors straddle heart-tugging hits with their now more familiar, visceral rock numbers. Synth-stabbing ‘Strawberry Lemonade’, for instance, is as unnerving as it is foot stomping with its screeching bleeps and drum beats,” it read.

“Elsewhere, the bludgeoning ‘Picturesque’ comes on like a frenzied attack to the senses and ‘Strange Intimacy’ is a head-spinning closer that leaves a bitter taste in the mouth. ‘EBM’, then, goes some way to bringing the seasoned band back to what they do best, all the while pushing things forward.”

More recently, guitarist Justin Lockey – who sat out of the band’s summer 2022 dates due to “struggles with anxiety” – opened up to NME about what led to his decision and the ways he has worked to improve his lifestyle .

“A lot of people who aren’t in bands or in the music industry think that touring is this non-stop party of just waking up in different cities, after-shows and great gigs – but it’s not,” he said. “It can be a very isolating, lonely and strange existence. You’re not in the same routine as most of the rest of the planet. No one outside of music understands your routine.”

He later went on to say that his approach to touring had “completely changed”, thanks to actively “[changing] the balance and [putting] my interests up to a point where I can be cognitively focussed when I’m not doing music, but the other disciplines make you more excited about music”.

About editors.

Editors are an English rock band, formed in 2002 in Birmingham. Previously known as Pilot, The Pride and Snowfield, the band currently consists of Tom Smith (lead vocals, guitar, piano), Russell Leetch (bass guitar, synthesizer, backing vocals), Ed Lay (drums, percussion, backing vocals), Justin Lockey (lead guitar), and Elliott Williams (keys, synthesizers, guitars, and backing vocals). Editors have so far released two platinum studio albums, and five in total, with several million combined sales. Their debut album The Back Room was released in 2005. It contained the hits "Munich" and "Blood" and the following year received a Mercury Prize nomination. Their follow-up album An End Has a Start went to number 1 in the UK Album Chart in June 2007 and earned the band a Brit Awards nomination for best British Band. It also spawned another Top 10 hit single, "Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors". The band's third album, In This Light and on This Evening, was released in October 2009 and went straight to number 1 in the UK Album Chart. The band released their fourth studio album, The Weight of Your Love, in July 2013, followed by self-produced In Dream in October 2015. Alongside their critical acclaim and strong success in the charts, Editors have consistently enjoyed sold-out tours and numerous headlining festival slots. Their brand of dark indie rock is commonly compared to the sound of bands such as Echo & the Bunnymen, Joy Division, Interpol, The Chameleons and U2.

Tom Smith of Editors: Best Ofs

Over their 17 year career, all six of Editors’ studio albums have made the Top 10 of the UK Album Charts - two of which scored numbers ones; An End Has A Start (2007) and In This Light and on This Evening (2009).

Editors' 2005 debut The Back Room , which reached number two, was also shortlisted for the prestigious Mercury Prize.

2020 saw the band play their biggest UK headline show to date at OVO Arena , Wembley and their success at home has been matched by their appeal across the channel, with the band regularly selling out tours and headlining festivals throughout Europe and beyond.

Editors announce 2024 UK Tour dates

Editors

Editors announce a six date UK tour for February and March 2024, which will see them play shows in Newcastle, Leeds, Liverpool, Bath, Birmingham and Southampton. Tickets will be on sale from 10am on Thursday 14th December here .

The dates will see them play tracks from their acclaimed seventh studio album EBM, out now via Play It Again Sam, as well as their celebrated catalogue. The 9 track LP is their first with latest band member Benjamin John Power, aka Ivor Novello winning producer and composer Blanck Mass, and marks the latest chapter in Editor’s ever-evolving story.

A band who have never stood still creatively, EBM is a breathlessly heavy step up and Editors’ most leftfield material yet – a thrilling, unrelenting thrust of full-bodied electro-industrial rock. The album title is an acronym of Editors and Blanck Mass but also a knowing reference to Electronic Body Music, the potent sound that originated in the 1980s and which has hugely influenced Editors’ new material, where the synths of bands like Nitzer Ebb, Front 242 and DAF hammer darkly amongst smoke machines, strobe lights and the smell of leather.

EBM kicks off the next era of one of the UK’s most intriguing and enduring musical success stories. All 6 of Editors’ studio albums over their 17 year career have charted in the UK top 10, with 2 scoring number 1’s, and their debut, The Back Room, being shortlisted for the Mercury Prize. 2020 saw them play their biggest UK headline show to date at OVO Arena, Wembley, signalling their ever-growing audience.

Their successes have been just as impressive across the channel, regularly selling out tours and headlining festivals throughout Europe and beyond. Arguably the key to their longevity is their ability to consistently evolve their sound, whilst remaining uncompromising in their vision. This next chapter proves Editors are continuing the trend.

The new dates follow Editors European tour earlier this year, which included 7 shows in the UK and Ireland, including London’s iconic Troxy.

EBM is out now via Play It Again Sam on Digital / 2LP / CD / Cassette – listen here

Fact or Fiction: The 2024 PGA Tour Season Was a Worthwhile One for Fans

John schwarb , bob harig , jeff ritter | sep 4, 2024.

Scottie Scheffler, pictured in the final round of the Tour Championship, all but locked up Player of the Year with his FedEx Cup title.

Welcome back to SI Golf’s Fact or Fiction, where we now know what we're watching on one December night .

Once again, we’re here to debate a series of statements for writers and editors to declare as “Fact” or “Fiction” along with a brief explanation. Responses may also (occasionally) be “Neutral” since there's a lot of gray area in golf.

Do you agree or disagree? Let us know on the SI Golf X account.

Scottie Scheffler’s FedEx Cup title should lock up PGA Tour Player of the Year honors, despite Xander Schauffele winning two majors.

Bob Harig: FACT . It’s rare for a two-major year to go unrewarded but you simply can’t ignore the year-long domination of Scheffler. He’s won a major. He won the Players. He won the Olympics. He won tournaments in March, April, June, July and August. He’s won more tournaments than any player in 17 years. It’s a yearlong award.

Jeff Ritter: FACT . Xander’s major wins were a sweet breakthrough and part of an epic year, but Scheffler just polished off a Tiger-in-his-prime kind of year. Scottie is POY, case closed.

John Schwarb: FACT . Players respect consistency, so in a peer vote that’s gonna carry Scottie even over someone who won half the year's majors. Or if you think, um, the Tour has its finger on the scale in this ballot (of which the complete tally is never made public), Scottie also owns the Tour’s biggest hardware in the Players and FedEx Cup. Case closed.

Sahith Theegala took the honorable route Saturday in calling a penalty on himself for what he suspected was a slight movement of sand during his backswing in a bunker. But he had a point in wondering if the two-shot penalty is too harsh in the Rules of Golf.

Bob Harig: FACT . The rule is there to prevent a player from creating a better position from which to hit the ball. He hardly did that. Rules are rules, of course, but there is an overly harsh assessment of the rule.

Jeff Ritter: FACT . Here’s what I don’t understand: how could Theegala have not moved that sand during his backswing? Of course we need a rule that penalizes players for improving their lies, but to me a one-shot infraction for Theegala’s situation would be plenty.

John Schwarb: FICTION . Improving one’s lie is one of the cardinal sins in the rules and therefore comes with one of its biggest penalties shy of disqualification. Of course what Theegala did—or thought he might have done—didn’t improve his shot but there’s no gray area built into this rule. But the bottom line from this incident is that the player chose honor and that’s great to see with so much money at stake now.

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan mentioned “fans” more than 50 times in his Tour Championship press conference, where he also said there’s no deadline in the Tour’s negotiations with LIV Golf’s backer . The 2024 PGA Tour season was a good one for fans.

Bob Harig: NEUTRAL . This can be argued in many ways. Did fans appreciate the TV product? There seems to be anecdotal evidence every week of something that fans are upset about when it comes to the various broadcasts and streaming options. As for the events themselves, certainly there were some very good ones. Having Hideki, Clark, Scottie and Rory winning them certainly doesn’t hurt.

Jeff Ritter: FICTION . The season had some epic moments, but the FedEx playoffs were sort of a dud and let’s be honest: the Tour is starting to miss Bryson, Rahm, Brooks and others on that LIV tour. No-name winners and Cinderella stories are nice, but the Tour would see its ratings spike if they can find a way to reunite the game.

John Schwarb: FACT . Though the Tour shouldn’t be so quick to pat itself on the back. As Bob said, the cream rose to the top in many weeks led by Scheffler’s historic season, there was a stunning amateur winner in Nick Dunlap (who then backed that up with a win as a pro) and the majors largely delivered (which had nothing to do with the Tour but the tournaments are folded into the schedule and many fans don’t know the difference). But unity atop the game is still nonexistent and a number of fans tuned out, as evidenced by declining ratings.

The day before the Tour Championship, the Tour hosted its new “Creator Classic” competition, featuring YouTube golf personalities. This is an idea worth keeping and repeating multiple times during the 2025 season.

Bob Harig: FACT . There are more scheduled for 2025 and the Tour should absolutely lean into this segment of the golf audience. The trick is to translate it into their own product. Can the Tour somehow integrate some of this? Can it offer a YouTube product that boils down its own tournaments with player interaction and highlights? There is a lot of room to grow here.

Jeff Ritter: FACT . There is some innovative, creative and wildly entertaining content happening in social media these days (some of it right here at SI Golf !), from an engaging and expanding group of influencers. The Tour is smart to embrace it.

John Schwarb: NEUTRAL . Nice to see the Tour acknowledge YouTubers and their popularity, but more “Creator Classics” in the same format will get stale quickly. How about alternate-shot matches pairing YouTubers and pros? Or getting the Korn Ferry Tour and/or PGA Tour Champions involved? Creativity isn’t always the Tour’s strong suit so I’m skeptical.

U.S. Presidents Cup captain Jim Furyk went straight down the points list for his at-large picks , the right move for the matches later this month at Royal Melbourne.

Bob Harig: NEUTRAL . As one who believes there is way too much angst over these things, it is far more about how guys like Scheffler, Schauffele, Morikawa and Cantlay play. You need the best players to be strong, and at the Ryder Cup last year, that was not the case. If I were to quibble, you could argue that Harman could have easily been passed over. Henley has never played in one of these. Homa’s form has been off. All fair points. But is anyone outside of the group—such as Justin Thomas—an egregious omission? Doesn’t seem so.

Jeff Ritter: FICTION . Is working straight from the points list defensible? Of course. Does it potentially reduce criticism from players who were left out? Perhaps. Here’s the only question that matters: does picking straight from the points list give you the best possible roster to compete? And for that, I’m skeptical. A captain should get more creative and think about team dynamics and possible pairings when rounding out the roster.

John Schwarb: FICTION . I’m in the camp of using the Presidents Cup as an incubator of sorts for the Ryder Cup, since it’s all but impossible to lose the former yet the U.S. struggles so much in the latter. I’d have liked to see Akshay Bhatia taken over Harman, giving the 22-year-old some big-stage experience that could pay off down the road. He was 14th on the points list and the second-guessing would have been minimal.

Tour Confidential: Solheim Cup preview, golf’s next made-for-TV match

Team Europe retained the Solheim Cup on home soil last summer.

Getty Images

Check in  every week  for the unfiltered opinions of our writers and editors as they break down the hottest topics in the sport, and join the conversation by tweeting us at  @golf_com . This week, we preview the Solheim Cup, discuss golf’s newly announced made-for-TV match and share our picks for the best deals in golf. And if you’re looking for our writers’ thoughts on last week’s Presidents Cup captain’s picks, you can read up on that here.

The 19th playing of the Solheim Cup gets underway Friday to Sunday at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Va. Last year, the U.S. and Europe tied for the first time in the event’s history, allowing Europe to keep the Cup for the third straight meeting. Who wins this year, and why?

Josh Sens, senior writer ( @joshsens ): Team USA. Partly thanks to home-crowd advantage, but also because– with Lexi playing in what is very likely her last, and Korda coming off an epic season, and the team having a nice balance of youthful fire and experience–it just feels like the way the spirits of the game would want it scripted.

Sean Zak, senior writer ( @sean_zak ): Wow, Josh Sens — big spirits guy! Put your tarot cards down and look at who is playing well. As much as Charley Hull, Esther Hensleit and a few Euros may be flashing at the moment, the best player is on Team USA, and so is the second-best player in Lilia Vu. Andrea Lee played great in St. Andrews and Rose Zhang is on the cusp of another great run herself. Not to mention the dawgs that are Lauren Coughlin and Ally Ewing. Team USA is going to win, and I fear it may not be close.

Sens: Sorry. I promise to ditch the ‘shrooms before our next roundtable and stick strictly to shot data.

Zephyr Melton, assistant editor ( @zephyrmelton ): I like the Euros to continue their dominance. The Americans may have some solid form, but that hasn’t helped them much the last few times around. When the lights shine the brightest in these team events, the Europeans always seem to come up clutch.

Last year it was Spain’s Carlota Ciganda who stole the show , finishing 4-0 and beating Nelly Korda 2 and 1 in singles play. Who will be the most important player for each side come next week, and who will be the event’s MVP?

Sens: For additional feel-good purposes, I’d like to say Lexi. But I’ve got a sneaky sense about captain’s pick Jennifer Kupcho, in a fiery bounce-back from her rough showing in Spain. (The caveat is that records in this format can be deceptive, as they’re largely dependent on how both your partner and your opponents play. For good reason, the MVP is often the lead point earner, who isn’t always the player who performed the best or meant the most to their team)

Zak: Most important? Lilia Vu. She’s capable of winning five matches, and is in good enough form to do it. She went 1-3 last year, during the same season where she won two majors. That’s not cutting it. MVP is going to be Nelly Korda, who will play five matches and be favored in every one of them. She’s on the right path back to dominance after a weird summer, and it may all click this week.

Melton: Gimme Leona Maguire from Team Europe. She’s had an uneven 2024 thus far, but she’s been an absolute stud in this event the last two playings. I like her to continue that trend and improve on her 7-2-1 Solheim Cup record. As far as the Americans go, it’ll be tough for them to come away victorious unless Nelly Korda and Lilia Vu play well.

Golf’s next made-for-TV match will see Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler face off against Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka in December in Las Vegas. What do you think of this matchup? And will the PGA Tour vs. LIV angle help with ratings?

Sens: It better help with the ratings because, really, is there any other reason for the match? This is designed to feed directly off golf’s civil war, and –outside of the majors, with a deal between the two tours nowhere in sight—it’s as close as the two circuits are going to get to giving people what they want. It helps, of course, that you’ve got four mega-names with lots of subplots/tensions in their relationships. But more than anything, this is an extension of the ongoing battle in the men’s pro game. Fans and media alike will assign all kinds of fabricated meaning to it as well, using the results as some kind of proof of which tour is more worthy. Birdies will abound. Ratings will be high. And people who already have a lot of money will make more of it by entertaining the masses with an event full of manufactured ‘meaning’. A perfect confection for our times.

Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy smile (L) and Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau shake hands.

Golf stars to battle in PGA Tour vs. LIV Golf primetime match

Zak: It really is a compelling matchup, putting two of the Tour’s three best against two of LIV Golf’s best. You’ve got Mr. Entertainer in Bryson, Mr. Jock in Brooks, Mr. Worldwide in Rory and Mr. Best-Since-Tiger in Scottie. It’s as compelling a product as you can field without the names Woods, Mickelson and Spieth. I’m sure it will be marketed as a war of sorts, but I hope that isn’t the case. Because these guys don’t dislike each other. I hope it’s a proving ground for many things. Ultimately, it’s probably just 12 or 18 holes of fun match play.

Melton: I’m certainly intrigued by the event, and having a LIV-PGA Tour angle should do a great job adding hype to the match. Will that be enough to generate some much-needed high ratings? I’m dubious.

Does the PGA Tour vs. LIV tie hint that the sides might be coming closer together on a deal? Or at least learning how to co-exist? How valuable might mini treaties like this be for the future of pro golf?

Sens: Does anyone, even the main actors themselves, have any idea how far or close they are from the deal? With so many moving parts and parties to appease, I get the sense even those directly involved aren’t sure what a final deal would look like. Meantime, a match like this does seem like a search for ways to profitably coexist. Purists might not see it as a great sign for pro golf, but if you look at the game purely as an entertainment product, it strikes me as a savvy way to go.

dj khaled and jimmy fallon laugh together at american century championship.

What a Jimmy Fallon/DJ Khaled golf match tells us about golf’s direction

Zak: Let’s call this a mini-treaty then. I think it’s valuable in the sense that ratings will be improved from the last match: a skins game featuring Rory vs. Lexi Thompson vs. Max Homa vs. Rose Zhang. I think it’s valuable to put LIV Golfers on the same playing field as Tour stars in the month of December (when they might normally be absent from public eye). I think it’s valuable to do it all in a non-major championship setting, too. Will it bring any “nos” from the boardroom closer to “yesses”? I don’t really think so.

Melton: I’m a bit exhausted analyzing every little thing in golf in the context of the Tour vs. LIV battle. The truth is no one knows what’s coming next other than a select few on the ins of the negotiations. I’m not putting too much stock in this event being a harbinger of things to come.

Speaking of LIV Golf, it released its dates and venues for the first four tournaments of 2025, and while all of them will be played internationally, they also all will be played during the same weeks as some of the PGA Tour’s biggest events — the WM Phoenix Open, Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational and Players Championship. Why would LIV Golf schedule these to compete directly with the Tour? Does it matter?

Sens: On the face of it, you could read it as a flex by LIV, especially going up against the hard-partying Phoenix Open, which is probably the closest the Tour offers to the atmospherics of a LIV event. But I don’t think it’s worth assigning too much meaning to any of it, other than to underscore that LIV is soldiering on, propelled by an endless budget, and that those dates on those venues fit well enough. As a serious competitor for the Tour’s main audience, it doesn’t seem much more than so much spit into the wind.

Zak: LIV can’t compete with the Tour for eyeballs, but I suppose it can try to put a dent in the ratings the Tour is most proud of? It can also stage the best events it can and produce social clips of players drinking beers out of shoes during weeks where the PGA Tour is cool, calm and relaxed at Riviera. It won’t matter, ultimately, to field tournaments during these weeks because the international time zones where LIV will be playing means they won’t actually compete directly. And at the end of the day, there’s about 10- to 15 golfers at LIV who fans really want to watch. And there are at least twice to three times that on the PGA Tour.

Melton: Truth be told, it doesn’t really matter when LIV schedules their events as it relates to Tour events. While Tour ratings might be down, they still dwarf the number of eyeballs drawn by LIV. I’m sure there’s some deeper meaning to this scheduling decision, but ultimately it doesn’t change the fact that LIV doesn’t move the needle.

Last week, we released our first-ever list of America’s best golf courses you can play for $100 or less. What’s the best course under this criteria — whether it’s on this list or not — that you ever played?

Sens: Since I just made this case on our site on Friday, I’m going to have to stick with George Wright, just outside Boston. A great Donald Ross-designed muni under the care of a miracle-worker superintendent who has made the absolute most of a minimal maintenance budget. It’s a great walk and an entertaining challenge in a green space that gets you far away from the urban bustle, even though it’s less than 8 miles from downtown.

Zak: It is difficult to think of a better golf course for $35 than The Aiken Golf Club, in Aiken, S.C. It’s so simple and so good. Drivable par-4s, long par-3s, pinestraw, tight lies, firm greens, tall pines and elevation changes. And all a 35-minute drive from Augusta, Ga. If you’re bringing the clubs on a Masters trip in early April, you better not miss this one.

Melton: Zak is spot on in his assessment of Aiken. I played it for the first time this spring and absolutely loved it. As far as the best deals up in my neck of the woods, it’s hard to beat the $75 green fee for residents of NY at Bethpage Black. Being able to tee it up on a major championship and future Ryder Cup host for less than $100 is an unbelievable bargain.

Pope’s Southeast Asia and Oceania Tour 2nd leg lands him in Papua New Guinea; 7 detained for making threats to disrupt the papal event

PAPUA NEW GUINEA: Pope Francis arrived in Papua New Guinea on Sept 6 as part of the second leg of his Southeast Asia and Oceania tour, the Associate Press (AP) News reports.

The 87-year-old arrived from Jakarta, Indonesia, after a 6-hour flight. While he was on the flight, Jakarta police reported that they had detained seven people from Java and Sumatra on suspicion of making threats on social media.

The detained individuals threatened to endanger lives during the papal events and wanted to disrupt the Pope’s security protocol.

Indonesian police counterterrorism squad official Aswin Siregar said that the threats appeared to be more for publicity than anything else, but the police would investigate nevertheless.

The Pope was in Jakarta for three days and had a mass on Thursday afternoon attended by more than 100,000. The event was held at two sports stadiums, and the crowd also used the parking lot due to space constraints.

“Don’t tire of dreaming and building a civilization of peace. Be builders of hope. Be builders of peace,” AP quoted the Pope as saying to the crowd.

There are 8.9 million Catholics in Indonesia, making up 3% of the population. The highlight of his Indonesian visit was signing a joint declaration with the grand imam of Jakarta’s Istiqlal Mosque to end religious violence and protect the environment.

In Papua New Guinea, the Pope will meet the governor general and speak to government authorities and diplomats. He will also meet children from two charity homes and talk to the country’s bishops, priests and religious sisters at a Marian sanctuary.

Tribal conflicts plague Papua New Guinea, which has over 800 indigenous cultures. Francis will travel to Vamino to check in on Catholic missionaries trying to spread the Catholic faith to tribals in the region.

Francis was the second pope to visit Papua New Guinea after St John Paul II, who visited in 1984 and 1995. Francis will visit East Timor and Singapore before he returns to the Vatican on Sept 13.

Russia’s RT will continue to work in the West, editor says

MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russian state media outlet RT, which the United States has accused of trying to influence its presidential election, will continue to work in the West by going around any limits or sanctions, its editor-in-chief said on Sunday.

The United States on Wednesday filed money-laundering charges against two employees of RT for what officials said was a scheme to hire an American company to produce online content to influence the 2024 election.

The United States also announced actions targeting RT, including Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan, calling her “a central figure in Russian government malign influence efforts”.

Simonyan said on RT that the West had been cracking down on the network since 2014, when Russia unilaterally annexed Crimea, and more strongly since the start of 2022 – when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine – and trying to prevent RT operating as a “normal journalist organisation”.

“We stayed in those countries, we worked there, and we shall work there – just not now in a straight line,” Simonyan said. “We will continue to do that as far as we can – so far it is working out – it’s almost like an exquisite gambling thrill.”

“They close entry to us, and we will go through the window, close the window and we will go through the vents and we will see what holes there are in the organism of the United States of America.”

US SAYS RT TRYING TO INFLUENCE US ELECTION

A senior U.S. intelligence official said RT was using American and other personalities to try to sway U.S. voters into backing Republican presidential nominee and former president Donald Trump over his Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris.

Russia has since 2022 suppressed almost all remaining independent domestic media, mostly for deviating from the government line on the war in Ukraine, and banned numerous staff at Western news organisations.

It has pledged to retaliate against U.S. media for the actions against RT, expanding a growing list of restrictions in both Russia and the West on news outlets from the other side accused of spreading falsehoods.

In June, Russia said it was shutting out the broadcasts of 81 media outlets from the European Union in retaliation for a similar EU ban on several Russian media outlets.

Simonyan said all U.S. media should be kicked out of Russia and that major U.S.-based social media networks – such as Alphabet’s YouTube and Meta’s Instagram – should be replaced in Russia because of their influence there.

“We need to make a final, serious leap so that our sites are fully competitive and better, so that they can replace those ones and so that we throw them out of here,” she said.

Simonyan said letting such platforms continue to operate inside Russia was like “settling a serious enemy army unit here in barracks and taking young people on excursions there, day and night”.

Instagram is banned in Russia but can still be accessed using VPN software. YouTube, the most popular foreign video platform in Russia, remains available, though access was noticeably much slower last month.

Neither Alphabet nor Meta responded to a request for comment.

Treasury takes action as part of a u.s. government response to russia’s foreign malign influence operations.

The United States takes action to defend and protect U.S. election institutions and processes from Moscow’s attempts to influence the 2024 Presidential Election

WASHINGTON — Today, the Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated   10 individuals and two entities as part of a coordinated U.S. government response to Moscow’s malign influence efforts targeting the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Russian state-sponsored actors have long used a variety of tools, such as generative artificial intelligence (AI) deep fakes and disinformation, in an attempt to undermine confidence in the United States’ election processes and institutions. Beginning in early 2024, executives at RT—Russia’s state-funded news media outlet—began an even more nefarious effort to covertly recruit unwitting American influencers in support of their malign influence campaign. RT used a front company to disguise its own involvement or the involvement of the Russian government in content meant to influence U.S. audiences.

“Today’s action underscores the U.S. government’s ongoing efforts to hold state-sponsored actors accountable for activities that aim to deteriorate public trust in our institutions,” said Secretary of the Treasury Janet L. Yellen. “Treasury will not waver in our commitment to safeguarding our democratic principles and the integrity of our election systems.”

Today’s designations complement law enforcement actions taken by the Department of Justice and the Department of State’s designation of the Rossiya Segodnya media group and five of its subsidiaries, RIA Novosti, RT, TV-Novosti, Ruptly, and Sputnik, as Foreign Missions, steps to impose visa restrictions, and release of a Rewards for Justice (RFJ) reward offer of up to $10 million relating to information pertaining to foreign interference in a U.S. election.

RUSSIAN Foreign malign influence Operations

The Kremlin employs an array of tools, including covert foreign malign influence campaigns and illicit cyber activities, to undermine the national security and foreign policy interests of the United States and its allies and partners globally. Russia routinely uses its intelligence services, government-directed proxies, and covert influence tools in these efforts. The Kremlin has increasingly adapted its efforts to hide its involvement by developing a vast ecosystem of Russian proxy websites, fake online personas, and front organizations that give the false appearance of being independent news sources unconnected to the Russian state.

Today’s designations follow prior OFAC actions that have highlighted and disrupted Russia’s global malign influence campaigns, including Kremlin-directed malign influence efforts ,  interference in U.S. elections ,  efforts to subvert democracy in Moldova ,  destabilization activities in Ukraine , and  the operation of outlets controlled by Russian intelligence services,  among others .

RT EXECUTIVES’ and RaHDit Members’ Russian Government Influence Operations

RT, formerly Russia Today , is a Russian state-funded news outlet that began broadcasting internationally in 2005. In 2017, RT registered as an agent of a foreign government in the United States. Beginning in early 2024, RT executives began an effort to covertly recruit unwitting American influencers. RT used a front company to disguise its own involvement or the involvement of the Russian government.

Margarita Simonovna Simonyan (Simonyan) is the Editor-in-Chief of RT and a central figure in Russian government malign influence efforts. She allowed the operations of a front company to occur under the cover of RT. Elizaveta Yuryevna Brodskaia (Brodskaia) is the Deputy Editor-in-Chief of RT, who has reported to Russian President Putin and other government officials. Anton Sergeyvich Anisimov (Anisimov) is an RT Deputy Editor-in-Chief, who conducts activities on behalf of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB). Andrey Vladimirovich Kiyashko (Kiyashko) is the Deputy Director of the RT English-Language Information Broadcasting and is responsible for updating Russian government officials and providing an overview of RT’s operations. Konstantin Kalashnikov (Kalashnikov) is RT’s Digital Media Projects Manager, who, in early 2022, worked with Kiyashko. In mid‑2023, Brodskaia and Kiyashko implemented a large-scale influence operation for RT on U.S. social media with the intent of obscuring RT’s connection to the content meant to influence online audiences. Elena Mikhaylovna Afanasyeva  (Afanasyeva) is an employee of RT’s Digital Media Projects Department and reports to Kalashnikov. Starting in early 2024, Afanasyeva covertly interacted with prominent U.S. social media influencers under the cover of a fake persona, purporting to be an employee at a U.S. company to obscure RT’s and the Russian government's involvement.

The pro-Kremlin hacktivist group RaHDit is composed of active and former Russian intelligence officers. Aleksey Alekseyevich Garashchenko (Garashchenko) is the head of RaHDit and was an FSB officer at the time he started leading the group. Garashchenko directly interacts with members of the Russian intelligence and security services, members of the Russian Presidential Administration, and employees from RT. Anastasia Igorevna Yermoshkina (Yermoshkina) is an affiliate of Garashchenko. Aleksandr Vitalyevich Nezhentsev (Nezhentsev) works with Garashchenko and is an administrator and developer of cyber tools used by the FSB. Nezhentsev also leads a team focusing on developing new tools that can be used in the surveillance of information data files.

Today, OFAC designated Simonyan, Brodskaia, Anisimov, Kiyashko, Kalashnikov, Afanasyeva, Garashchenko, Yermoshkina, and Nezhentsev pursuant to E.O. 14024 for being owned or controlled, or having acted or purported to act for or on behalf of, directly or indirectly, the Government of the Russian Federation.

Doppelgänger and RRN Russian Malign Influence Operations

Autonomous Non-Profit Organization ( ANO ) Dialog (ANO Dialog) is a Russian nonprofit organization founded in 2019 by the Moscow city government that leverages AI technology in online Russian disinformation for use against election campaigns. ANO Dialog Regions (Dialog Regions) is ANO Dialog’s subsidiary organization that is co-located at their Moscow headquarters and also has offices throughout Russia.

Vladimir Grigoryevich Tabak (Tabak) is the Director General of both ANO Dialog and Dialog Regions. He previously held several positions in the Russian Presidential Administration.

ANO Dialog is linked to Doppelgänger—a Russia-linked influence operation network identified in 2022—that used deep fake content to develop Russian disinformation campaigns. In fall 2022, Tabak was expected to attend a meeting with senior Russian government officials. The meeting discussed the presumed success of the Doppelgänger activity and provided feedback and guidance on future projects.

In July 2022, ANO Dialog and Tabak provided services to the Russian government, working on a project for the creation of fake online posts on popular social media accounts, including “Reliable Recent News” (“RRN”) and “War on Fakes”—a Russian disinformation website publicly linked to the Doppelgänger activity—that would be composed of counterfeit documents, among other material, in order to elicit an emotional response from the audiences of these accounts. An ANO Dialog advisor purchased RRN’s new domain, “rrn.world” in order to avoid using the former domain, “rrussianews.com,” which would have maintained a connection to Russia. Tabak also coordinated with ANO Dialog and the Russian government on the payment of services for an RRN-affiliate translator.

In late fall 2023, ANO Dialog personnel identified U.S., UK, and other public figures as potential targets for deepfake projects. Because of this, the EU sanctioned ANO Dialog for its role in the disinformation network and specifically as the owner and operator of the “War on Fakes” website. In May 2024, Tabak and several Dialog Regions officials coordinated with Russian government officials regarding the creation of bot accounts on popular social media messaging platforms for use in a misinformation campaign regarding voting locations in the U.S. 2024 election.

Today, OFAC designated ANO Dialog pursuant to E.O. 14024 for being owned or controlled by, or having acted or purported to act for or on behalf of, directly or indirectly, the Government of the Russian Federation; Dialog Regions pursuant to E.O. 14024 for being owned or controlled by, or having acted or purported to act for or on behalf of, directly or indirectly, ANO Dialog; and Tabak pursuant to E.O. 14024 for being owned or controlled by, or having acted or purported to act for or on behalf of, directly or indirectly, the Government of the Russian Federation and for being a leader, official, senior executive officer, or member of the board of directors of ANO Dialog and Dialog Regions, persons whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to E.O. 14024.

Also today, the Federal Bureau of Investigation announced the seizure of domains associated with RRN/ANO Dialog and Social Design Agency (SDA)—which OFAC had previously designated pursuant to E.O. 14024 for its activities on behalf of the Russian government—that have been used in furtherance of the Russian Doppelgänger disinformation efforts targeting the United States and Europe.

SANCTIONS IMPLICATIONS

As a result of today’s action, all property and interests in property of the designated persons described above that are in the United States or in the possession or control of U.S. persons are blocked and must be reported to OFAC. In addition, any entities that are owned, directly or indirectly, individually or in the aggregate, 50 percent or more by one or more blocked persons are also blocked. Unless authorized by a general or specific license issued by OFAC, or exempt, OFAC’s regulations generally prohibit all transactions by U.S. persons or within (or transiting) the United States that involve any property or interests in property of designated or otherwise blocked persons.

In addition, financial institutions and other persons that engage in certain transactions or activities with the sanctioned persons may expose themselves to sanctions or be subject to an enforcement action. The prohibitions include the making of any contribution or provision of funds, goods, or services by, to, or for the benefit of any designated person, or the receipt of any contribution or provision of funds, goods, or services from any such person.

The power and integrity of OFAC sanctions derive not only from OFAC’s ability to designate and add persons to the SDN List, but also from its willingness to remove persons from the SDN List consistent with the law. The ultimate goal of sanctions is not to punish, but to bring about a positive change in behavior. For information concerning the process for seeking removal from an OFAC list, including the SDN List, please refer to OFAC’s Frequently Asked Question 897 here .  For detailed information on the process to submit a request for removal from an OFAC sanctions list, please click here .

Linkin Park Unveil Emily Armstrong as New Co-Vocalist, Announce 2024 World Tour and Album

By Larisha Paul

Larisha Paul

A new chapter in the story of Linkin Park is among us. On Thursday, the band announced plans to embark on a headlining tour beginning kicking off Sept. 11 at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, marking their first run of live performances since the death of frontman Chester Bennington in 2017. Moving forward on the road without him also brings in the addition of a new co-vocalist, for which Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, Joe Hahn, and Dave Farrell have selected Emily Armstrong of Dead Sara. Colin Brittain, songwriter and producer for G Flip, was also announced as the band’s new drummer.

Linkin Park also shared their first new music in seven years, “The Emptiness Machine,” which premiered alongside a livestream performance to announce their new album, From Zero , slated for release on Nov. 15.

Linkin Park first began teasing the announcement last week. On Instagram, the official band account shared a video of a countdown that starts at 100 hours and begins ticking away. They followed it up with another countdown, this one starting at zero seconds, increasing to nine, and immediately jumping back down to five before the video completely distorts. “It’s only a matter of time …” the caption read, along with a link to their website.

The site’s landing page hosted a message of its own: “Be part of something. Tune in.” The next teaser used the same statement in its caption, this time with an accompanying image that seemed to feature the logo Linkin Park began using in 2007.

Even around that time, the band was thinking about how to move forward. “[Chester] had such a specific tone and range – an incredible range. He could sing almost any style you wanted him to. That led to conversations about what to do next,” Shinoda said. “It became obvious that you can’t just hire some schmuck to get up there and sing with us, ’cause they won’t be able to hit half the stuff.”

ABBA's Bjorn Ulvaeus calls for clearer laws on use of music at political rallies

the editors tour 2024

Bjorn Ulvaeus tells ITV News Arts Editor Nina Nannar that Donald Trump may have misunderstood the lyrics to The Winner Takes It All.

"It is a grey area," he tells me, as we meet in a room that is anything but grey.

It is the multicoloured setting for Mamma Mia the Party, at the O2 in London , an immersive show loosely based on the movie Mamma Mia - in which you eat, drink and dance while performers act around you.

It is celebrating its fifth year and is still going strong. Bjorn Ulvaeus from ABBA is in town to mark this anniversary, but has arrived in a week when the band and their music are making different kinds of headlines.

The band, through their record company Universal, have instructed Donald Trump and his team to stop playing their song The Winner Takes It All at presidential campaign rallies.

They did not give permission, they say, although the Trump team say they do have licenses for this sort of use of music. That’s where the grey area conversation comes in.

Bjorn tells me what is needed is some kind of legal ruling to make what is now a grey area, well, a bit more black-and-white.

This week the family of the late soul singer Isaac Hayes scored a victory in their campaign to stop Trump using a song Hayes co-wrote called Hold On I’m Coming in his campaign.

He is blocked from doing so while the court considers an application for a permanent injunction.

"If there is a resolution in this, it could be the legal definition we are waiting for," Bjorn said.

ABBA are the latest in a long line of artists who have been less than happy to see Trump using their songs to rally his fans at gatherings.

Adele and The White Stripes asked for their music not to be used. Celine Dion made the same request, when her hit from the film Titanic, My Heart Will Go On, was played.

She was later quoted as adding: ”And really, THAT song?”

Similarly, Bjorn said he found it staggering that The Winner Takes It All was chosen for the rally.

"That is a song about someone who loses absolutely everything. It is not an uplifting arms in the air victorious kind of song," he giggled.

He has recently got together with the rest of the band - a very rare thing indeed these days when they were all honoured at a ceremony by the king of Sweden.

Bjorn looks ruthful.

"I looked around and I thought it was probably going to be the last time we would ever get together like that," he said.

There may not be any chance of any other reunions but it seems Mamma Mia 3 the movie is very much in the works though he won’t be drawn any further.

In the meantime, ABBA are doing just fine, thank you very much.

ABBA Voyage, the digital show, has helped bring more than £300 million to the London economy.

It is booking far ahead and going on a world tour - and the way things look, it's unlikely to leave the site in east London where they were meant to be for a certain period of time.

Decades after the band broke up, their music is as ubiquitous as ever. But don’t expect to be dancing along to it at a Trump rally in the future.
