Q&A: Neal Schon On The ‘Freedom’ Of Journey, His Friendship With Carlos Santana And Much More
Journey will release Freedom , their first album in 11 years, this Friday (July 8). With the 11-year gap between records, the band's longest break between albums, and the presence of drummer/producer Narada Michael Walden, Freedom , according to guitarist Neal Schon, is a true representation of who Journey is in 2022.
Neal Schon on Journey’s New LP ‘Freedom,’ Ambitious 50th Anniversary Plans
It’s been 11 years since Journey released their last studio record, and for a while it was looking like they’d never get around to making one. “Nobody was really interested in making new music,” Journey founder and guitarist and Neal Schon tells Rolling Stone via Zoom from his California home. “It’s very difficult to get new material played and to get people familiar with it before you go out and play live. Everybody in the band was like, ‘I don’t want to do it.'”

Neal Schon soloed many times throughout the one-hour-45-minute set, mustering an entertaining mélange of crisp, piercing notes, with blistering bluster and straight-up shredding.

An overview of the Church in Singapore
By Lisa Zengarini
The history of the Church in Singapore is closely linked to that of neighbouring Malaysia, where the first missionaries arrived from Portugal in the 16th century following the Portuguese.
Saint Francis Xavier arrived in Melaka in 1545, and in 1558, the territory was set up as a suffragan diocese of the Archdiocese of Goa, then a Portuguese colony in India.
After the occupation of Malaysia by the (Protestant) Dutch, Catholicism was temporarily banned from the territory.
Portuguese and French missionaries
It was restored after the purchase of Singapore by the British East India Company (1819). In 1821, a missionary found only 12 Catholics on the island. By 1829, they numbered about 200 and ten years later around 500.
Portuguese missionaries arrived in Singapore in 1825, and a few years later the Paris Foreign Mission Society (MEP) sent missionaries who established churches and schools.
One missionary, Jean-Marie Beurel (1813–72), played a crucial role in strengthening the presence of the Catholic Church in the island. He built the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd, a school for boys run by the De La Salle Brothers (or Brothers of the Christian Schools), and one for girls run by the Sisters of the Infant Jesus.
From the beginning, Catholics of the then Diocese of Melaka came under two jurisdictions, amid a jurisdictional conflict between the Holy See and Portugal over the Portuguese Royal Patronage system ( Padroado ) which ended in 1886 with a new Concordat.
Catholics of the Portuguese mission were placed under the authority of the Bishop of Macau, then a Portuguese colony, and those of the French mission under the Vicar Apostolic of Ava and Pegu (Burma).
The Diocese of Melaka was suppressed in 1840 and replaced in 1841 by the Apostolic Vicariate of Western Siam, which was established along with the Apostolic Vicariate of Eastern Siam (now Archdiocese of Bangkok, Thailand).
In 1888, Singapore became part of the re-established Diocese of Melaka, but remained for nearly a century under the jurisdiction of the Bishops of Macau.
Persecution under the Japanese occupation
After the Japanese occupation (1942-45), during which the local Church suffered severe persecution, the Catholic community in post-war 1950s was restored in Singapore and the Church resumed its activities in the educational, healthcare and social fields.
A separate Archdiocese since 1972
In 1972, Pope Paul VI made Singapore a separate Archdiocese under the direct jurisdiction of the Holy See, and in 1977 Gregory Yong became its first archbishop.
The Bishop of Macau agreed to relinquish his authority over the Padroado mission in Singapore to the Archbishop of Singapore, a decision which the Holy See ratified in 1981.
Archbishop Yong was succeeded by Nicholas Chia, the first Archbishop born in the city-state and then, in 2013, by Archbishop William Goh Seng Chye, who became Cardinal in 2022.
Diplomatic relations with Holy See and Pope John Paul II’s visit
After the establishment of diplomatic relations with the Holy See in 1981, Singapore received the visit of Saint John Paul II on 20 November 1986 as part of his 32nd Apostolic Journey abroad, which took him to Bangladesh, Singapore, Fiji, New Zealand (18 November-1 December 1986).
A secular state in a multi-ethnic and multi-religious society
Singapore is a multi-ethnic and multi-religious society, with a prevalence of Buddhists who make up around 43% of its population of 5.6 million and a significant Christian (nearly 20%) and Muslim (around 14%) presence and a smaller Hindu community. This pluralism has contributed to shape the relations between the state and religions.
Unlike neighbouring countries, Singapore is a secular state. The Constitution guarantees full religious freedom—to profess, practice and spread religious beliefs—provided that religious activities do not infringe the public order or morals or other people’s religious freedoms.
Another key principle enshrined in the Constitution is safeguarding religious harmony. This has been enforced through a law passed in 1990 that authorizes the Ministry of the Interior to issue restrictive orders against religious groups which incite hostility against members of other confessions or carry out subversive activities under the pretext of practicing a religion.
Religious policies in the city-state are oriented to promoting dialogue and collaboration with religions, especially in the field of education and in the social field. An example of this is the support given by the Government to the Inter-Religious Organization (Iro), a Singaporean NGO that promotes the sharing of different faith experiences.
The peaceful coexistence between religions is also favoured by the high rate of mixed marriages in the city-state. The Catholic Church also benefits from this situation.
Good relations between State and Catholic Church
The Church enjoys a good relationship with State authorities in Singapore, which established diplomatic relations with the Holy See in 1981.
These good relations were confirmed in 2015 by the then Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on the occasion of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of independence, and in 2016 during the official visit to the Vatican by the then President of the Republic, Tony Tan Keng Yam.
A vital Catholic community
With some 395,000 Catholics, the Catholic Church in Singapore is one of the most dynamic and vital in Southeast Asia.
Despite the diffusion of consumerist values and lifestyles, the state-city still has a high percentage of practicing faithful: half of the Catholic population regularly attends Sunday Mass, and churches are still full thanks to migrants who represent an important component of the local Church.
Recent data from the Singapore Statistics Office show that Christianity, and in particular Catholicism, is the only growing religion in the city-state. This vitality is confirmed by the active presence of the Church in the education and social care sectors.

From Canada to Cork - French rower shatters world record
French rower patrick favre unexpectedly got to take in some of ireland's most spectacular scenery when he rerouted his north atlantic journey to cork..
Patrick Favre, a rower from France, shattered a world record on Thursday, August 29 when he landed in Baltimore, Co Cork after departing from Canada about a month earlier.
Favre, who set out from Trepassey in Newfoundland, Canada on July 28, was initially supposed to land back in his native France but was forced to change route due to weather.
Favre announced only earlier this week that he would be heading to “Ireland, home of the famous St. Patrick!”
In an update on Tuesday, he confirmed that Baltimore, on the southwest tip of Ireland, was his new destination.
"This village in County Cork has the Irish name Dún na Séad or Dunashad ('fort of the jewel')," he said in a post on the Rame Océan Facebook page, which tracked Favre's journey.
Rame Océan, which Favre is the president of, organizes logistics for ocean crossings by rowing boats.

Favre noted that upon his final approach, he would see the “region’s most remarkable landmark,” the Baltimore Beacon.

On Wednesday, Favre further said that he would be passing Fastnet Rock, which he noted is known as ‘The Teardrop of Ireland' as “it was the last part of Ireland some 19th-century Irish immigrants saw as they sailed to North America.” It also marked the first European island Favre saw on his journey.

After Fastnet, Favre rowed by Cape Clear Island and finally Sherkin Island; the latter constitutes the west wall of the pass to reach the Baltimore Harbor.
At daybreak on Thursday, Favre was off Cape Clear Island, only about ten miles from Baltimore where he finally touched land.

Ultimately, Favre rowed a distance of 1719 nautical miles in 32 days, 7 hours, and 46 minutes - the fastest time for the route, Rame Océan said on Thursday.
Favre even rowed faster than all the double scull crews who have completed this crossing, Rame Océan said on Thursday. Only two boats with four and five rowers have been faster than Patrick on this route.
This was Favre’s ninth ocean row and his first crossing of the North Atlantic. He has previously crossed the Atlantic eight times from East to West solo, in double sculls, and in crewed boats.
Favre undertook the daunting rowing challenge to benefit the French charity Le Rire Médecin . Donations to the fundraiser were still open as of Thursday evening after Favre's Irish arrival.
Cork publication The Southern Star was on hand on Thursday to greet Favre’s arrival.
“I don't know if I am tired or not,” the record-setting rower told The Southern Star.
“It’s difficult. I was used to kind of a rhythm with the sea, and now we'll see in the next days.”
He added: “I already crossed the Atlantic eight times, this is the ninth crossing and it [the previous crossings] helped me a lot to do this crossing because it has been difficult with very strong winds and difficult situations.”
Though it wasn't initially part of his route, Favre said he was “very happy” to discover Baltimore in Co Cork.
“I came to Ireland [before] for rugby matches,” he told The Southern Star, “and it's always very special with the Irish.”

French performer Barbara Butch carried the Paralympic torch Sunday evening in an act of defiance after being targeted by hate speech over her appearance in the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games .
“I chose not to be afraid to exist in the public space,” Barbara Butch, a popular DJ and LGBTQ+ icon said in an interview with broadcaster France Info before walking onstage with the torch at a musical event in Saint-Cloud, a western suburb of Paris. “I know I represent France in the same way as anyone else,” she added.
The performer filed a formal legal complaint alleging online abuse after suffering online harassment, death threats and insults following her performance in the July 26 Olympics opening show. Five other artists and performers, including the ceremony's artistic director, Thomas Jolly, made similar complaints after suffering a torrent of abuse.
Butch said she has received “tens of thousands of hate messages.” A specialized team has managed to identify “hundreds of people who had sent ... the most violet messages,” she said.
“Justice will do its job and then we will tackle the international level,” Butch said.

Under sea and over land, the Paris Paralympics flame is beginning an exceptional journey
Butch was among nearly 1,000 torch bearers -- who will carry the Paralympic flame , split between 12 torches, to 50 cities across France in the next few days to highlight communities that are committed to promoting inclusion in sport and building awareness of living with disabilities.
Other torch bearers include former Paralympians, young para athletes, volunteers from Paralympic federations, innovators of advanced technological support, people who dedicate their lives to others with impairments and people who work in the non-profit sector to support careers.
The 12 flames will become one again when the relay ends in central Paris on Wednesday after visiting historical sites along the city’s famed boulevards and plazas before lightening the cauldron during the three-hour Opening Ceremony .
