Disney’s The Lion King in Concert

Take a trip to the Pride Lands and see this classic film like you never have before

Ashleigh Hastings

Time Out says

If you’ve been craving a nostalgia fix that will take you right back to your carefree younger years, you’re in for a treat thanks to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s latest show. The city’s mightiest orchestra is banding together with the legends over at Disney for a performance that will have you reliving the hakuna matata vibes of your childhood all over again.

Disney’s The Lion King in Concert will make its Australian premiere in February 2024 at the Plenary at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre , just in time to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the beloved blockbuster film. This family-friendly performance will run at 1pm and 7.30pm on Saturday, February 3 2024.

Bring the whole family along to hear the MSO perform the Oscar winning songs from the film by Elton John and Tim Rice, alongside the score by Hans Zimmer.

You and the fam (or just you, no judgement!) will relive the magic of Simba’s journey through the Pride Lands, watching him learn about himself and make new friends along the way. You’ll feel the full symphonic power of the Oscar-winning score, conducted by Nicholas Buc, as the film plays on a huge screen above the orchestra.

The performance will run for just under two hours, including an intermission. Tickets are on sale now and you can get yours at the MSO website .

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

'the lion king' in concert with a live orchestra is coming to australia for the film's 30th anniversary.

Disney's animated stroll through the jungle is the latest film returning to the big screen with a live orchestra, this time playing Hans Zimmer's score and Elton John and Tim Rice's songs.

'The Lion King' in Concert with a Live Orchestra Is Coming to Australia for the Film's 30th Anniversary

There are plenty of ways to mark a movie milestone. Whenever one of your favourite flicks notches up five, ten, 20, 30 or more years since first hitting screens, watching it is the easiest way to celebrate, of course. That's definitely in order when the original animated version of The Lion King — not the recent live-action take — hits three decades in 2024. How to truly do justice to the Disney smash that spawned a musical, ample sequels and oh-so-much enduring affection? Seeing it show at an in-concert session with a live orchestra playing its songs and score.

Yes, The Lion King in Concert is coming to Australia, with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra doing the honours. The blockbuster movie-and-music performance was announced as part of MSO's just-unveiled 2024 season, and will take over The Plenary at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on Saturday, February 3. This is an Aussie premiere, too, featuring Hans Zimmer's score and Elton John and Tim Rice's songs performed live as the movie once again graces a silver screen.

the lion king musical tour 2023 australia

As Nicholas Buc conducts, audiences will be feeling the love that night — and day, thanks to both 1pm and 7.30pm sessions — and celebrating the circle of life as well. Just can't wait to commemorate 30 years since the film debuted, instantly becoming an all-ages favourite? Add this chance to revisit Simba's journey to your calendar.

Both John and Rice's tunes, and Zimmer's music, won Oscars. The former were nominated three times in the same field, in fact, with 'Can You Feel the Love Tonight?' winning out over 'Circle of Life' and 'Hakuna Matata'. So, yes, seeing any film as its score is played live is a rousing experience, but this one will feel particularly powerful.

the lion king musical tour 2023 australia

There's no word yet whether The Lion King in Concert will be a Melbourne exclusive in addition to being an Aussie premiere, or if it'll make the rounds of other city-based symphony orchestras. Some such shows hop around the country, as Star Wars , Harry Potter and Zimmer -focused gigs have. Others have stuck to one place, as seen with past The Princess Bride , Home Alone and Toy Story performances, and the upcoming Black Panther .

Sydneysiders, Brisbanites and folks elsewhere, perhaps cross your fingers while you channel a "hakuna matata" mindset. You can always stream the sing-along version while you wait for local dates.

Check out the trailer for The Lion King below:

The Lion King in Concert will play The Plenary, Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, on Saturday, February 3, 2024. Head to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra website for further details, and tickets from Tuesday, October 3, 2023.

Buyi Zama as Rafiki in The Lion King - Sydney 2013 [Image by Deen van Meer]

The Lion King – Capitol Theatre, Sydney

The Lion King are an experience of utter joy. The familiar opening call, in Zulu, breaks out into the theatre and from there we are transported into the pure magic of Julie Taymor’s stagecraft. Sophisticated puppetry, mask and costume design bring an entire pride land to life at the Capitol and it’s as exciting for those who saw it ten years ago at its Sydney premiere, I’d wager, as it was for those who were new to the show at its opening night last week.

The Lion King - Sydney 2013 Image by Deen van Meer

There is a majesty to this production, a gravitas that surpasses the original Disney film’s emotional reach. Taymor, a high-concept director who can occasionally get too lost in her vision ( Across the Universe , Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark ) hits that elusive sweet spot between symbolism and humanity; there is true heart in the graceful shapes and staging of this show, characters imbued with dignity and likability.

Simba  (Nick Aofa as the adult lion) is the next king in line for the throne of Pride Rock when his father Mufasa (Rob Collins), a spiritually aware and just leader, is killed by sneering, scheming brother Scar (Josh Quong Tart). Simba, threatened by Scar, is chased out of house, and Scar assumes the crown

Everyone knows the rest – Simba’s coming of age tale with oddball guardians Timon (Jamie McGregor) and Pumbaa (Russell Dykstra), his reunion with childhood friend and bethrothed Nala (Ayanda Dladla as the outstanding cub, Josslyn Hlenti as an adult), and his internal struggle: live up to his potential, fulfill his birthright, and reclaim the pride lands, or run from his past forever?

The Lion King

The best thing about The Lion King ‘s life as a musical, though, is the character of Rafiki: the old mandrill monkey that acts as prognosticator, spirit guide, and voice of reason through is played in this Sydney season by vocal powerhouse Buyi Zama, who has played the role on Broadway, in South Africa – it’s her voice on the wonderful live South African cast recording – and in London and Taipei, among others. Her range is enough to stop anyone in their tracks and listen and watch mesmerised, and her bilingual melopoetics are staggeringly beautiful.

The rest of the performances are strong on the whole, because the ensemble itself is a force of nature, with choreography by Garth Fagan and music direction by Richard Montgomery; their arrangements, based on a multitude of African traditions and featuring six different languages, are stunning. McGregor, Dladla, and Mthiyane are the standouts amongst the principal and featured cast; Hlenti as Dladla’s adult counterpart was buried under the force of talent around her, rendering Nala’s second act number ‘Shadowland’ timid and strangely flat.

There are some pacing and script problems that are not quite forgivable; three or four static book scenes, clearly scheduled to accommodate moving set pieces and little else almost stop the show cold in their flatness. The staging and aerial work, too, is a little bit dated now, but it still retains appropriate grandeur, and there is something comfortably familiar about it – even while looking great, it feels safe. Shadow puppetry and masks are still used to great effect, enough that it still feels fresh.

Still, the show is full of theatre magic – the menagerie of birds, antelopes, a sleek Cheetah, elephants and all the rest are strong reminders of the power of theatre and design to create something truly evocative through shape, colour, and movement, and all the best songs from the film are there, supplemented with the far more nourishing and exciting songs and chants added for the stage.

Following Dirty Rotten Scoundrels as Sydney’s newest major musical outing, the uptick in quality in not unnoticed, is greatly appreciated, and is, let’s hope, a promise of yet more to come: these are the shows that keep people coming. Check this one out, bring a child, bring friends who look sad. There’s something to be said for the overwhelming sense of warmth this show leaves as the curtain falls; it’s here to lift the audience up, away from their life for a moment, and into something enchanting.

"Awe-inspiring! Broadway theater is alive again. [Julie] Taymor's imaginative ideas seem limitless. it's a gorgeous, gasp-inducing spectacle. Most important - against all odds - it has innocence. "Seen purely as a visual tapestry, there is simply nothing else like it. Suddenly, you're 4 years old again, and you've been taken to the circus for the first time. You can only marvel at the exotic procession of animals before you: the giraffes and the elephants and the hippopotamuses and all those birds in balletic flight. Such is the transporting magic wrought by the opening 10 minutes of The Lion King, [director Julie] Taymor has introduced a whole new vocabulary of images to the Broadway blockbuster." The New York Times Ben Brantley

"Julie Taymor's staging of Disney's The Lion King is a marvel, a theatrical achievement unrivaled in its beauty, brains and ingenuity. Leaping far beyond its celluloid inspiration, the stage version improves upon nearly every aspect of the hit 1994 animated film, from visual artistry and storytelling to Lebo M's score and the newly African-ized pop songs of Elton John and Tim Rice."
