The History of the Train :

In the late 19th century, as Shimla (or Simla, as it was known then) blossomed as the summer capital of British India, the need for better connectivity grew evident. To bridge this gap, the British envisioned a rail route that not only served logistical purposes but also promised an enthralling journey through the heart of the Himalayas.

Initiated in 1898, the rail line, after overcoming numerous engineering challenges, finally saw its inaugural run in 1903. Since then, it has been a testament to human ingenuity, overcoming the region’s rugged topography to provide an unmatched travel experience. The entire stretch spans approximately 96 kilometers, graced with 103 tunnels and more than 800 bridges and viaducts.

History of Kalka Shimla Toy Train

When India was under the influence of Britishers, Shimla (earlier called as Simla) was officially declared as the summer capital of the British Empire. During that period, there was no good connectivity to reach Shimla. Whatever route was available, it was risky, dangerous and used to consume a lot of time.

So, to provide an easy and quick access to Shimla, Britishers started the Kalka Shimla narrow-gauge train in November 1903. Lord Curzon enjoyed the first train ride and since then, the train has been running on an everyday basis, except for the maintenance breaks in between.

The Kalka Shimla Toy Train begins its journey from Kalka railway station, situated in Panchkula district of Haryana. At 656 meters, it takes its first climb and starts covering a track length of 96 km to reach Shimla, which is positioned at an altitude of 6,812 feet amidst the beautiful hills and mystical woods.

The 18 stations it covers are: Kalka, Taksal, Gumman, Koti, Sonwara, Dharampur, Kumarhatti, Barog, Solan, Salogra, Kandaghat, Kanoh, Kathleegat, Shoghi, Taradevi, Jutoh, Summer Hill and Shimla. At every station, the train halts for some time, so passengers can relish the taste of local food along with enjoying tea and snacks on the way.

The most refreshing part of the journey is the experience of overlooking the mesmerizing sights, breathing in the fresh air, basking in the pleasant atmosphere, admiring the lush greenery, dancing to the tunes of birds chirping and grazing around the track.

Kalka Shimla Toy Train Services

Here is the detail about the three main tourist train services that run on the Kalka Shimla railway route:

Rail Motor Car

Offering one of the most sought-after train journeys in India, the Rail Motor Car is a single coach train that operates from Kalka to Shimla and vice-versa. It is carefully decorated with beautiful tube light fittings and has got a transparent glass rooftop with cushioned chairs, an LCD and air-conditioning. In addition, the seats are quite comfortable and have 2 plug points to charge your mobile phones, laptops or any other device.

Having an accommodation capacity of 14 to 18 passengers, the Rail Motor Car also provides an express service with food on its way. For all those who don’t want to get up early for food, the train stops at Barog station for approximately 20 minutes. Here you can enjoy your morning meal at just INR 50, which includes 2 slices of bread, a cup of coffee and butter. There is also an option of choosing an omelette or 2 pieces of cutlet for vegetarians. Make sure to click some pictures here as the station is nice in itself.

Shivalik Deluxe Express

The Shivalik Deluxe Express luxury Toy Train, equipped with a carpet, large glass windows, plush cushioned seats, upgraded toilets and soothing music offers a pleasant ride from Kalka to Shimla and vice-versa. It is beautifully designed with all wooden work and features wall to wall carpeting with curtains and portraits.

In addition, the train has a comfortable seating arrangement along with an accommodation capacity of 120 passengers in total. You can reverse the orientation of the seats or put your stuff at the foldable side table to make the most of your journey.

Enjoy overlooking the panoramic views of the scenery from wide-glass windows while having your food on the way, which includes 2 pieces of brown bread, 1 veg cutlet, bread jam, bread butter and ketchup sachets.

The train also serves its travellers with a mineral water bottle and hot water in a thermos to prepare tea or coffee. Although there are no stops listed in between, it halts at Barog station for some time. Here you can satisfy your appetite with a healthy yet mouthwatering meal.

Himalayan Queen

Also known as a standard train to explore the beauty of the hill-station positioned in Himachal Pradesh, the Kalka Shimla Himalayan Queen Toy Train comes with first and second-class carriages. It runs all 7 days in a week and covers the required distance at a speed of 18 Kmph. The train is equipped with only one chair coach and has standard car seats to offer – to make the journey of the passengers an enjoyable experience.

Though the food service is not available in Himalayan Queen train, people can get their food at any of the 9 main stations it stops. These stations include Barog, Dharampur, Jutogh, Solan, Summer Hill, Kumarhatti, Taradevi, Kandaghat and Salogra. Some of the halts are for nearly 5-10 minutes, which simply means that you can step out of the train to capture as many photos as you can – with mesmerizing landscapes and valleys at your backdrop.

To enjoy the most comfortable train journey of your life, better to go with either the Rail Motor Car or Shivalik Deluxe Express. Unless you’re travelling in a first-class carriage of the Himalayan Queen Toy Train, you might face a few inconveniences like unhygienic toilets, hard bench seats and lack of enough space to keep your luggage.

Shivalik Queen and Shivalik Palace Tourist Coach are two more trains that operate on the same route. Designed to offer the ultimate luxury to the passengers, they feature ultra-modern facilities with a beautiful interior, a dining table, a refrigerator, a fully-equipped kitchen, comfortable sofas and cushion beds for relaxing. However, one needs to make booking much ahead of their Shimla tour to travel via these trains as they run only once a week and from March to September.

Kalka Shimla Railway: Toy Train Travel Guide

tour & travels kalka

Taking a trip on the historic UNESCO World Heritage Kalka-Shimla toy train is like traveling back in time. The railway, built by the British in 1903 to provide access to their summer capital of Shimla, provides one of the most scenic toy train journeys in India . It enlivens passengers as it gradually winds its way steeply upwards along the narrow track, through rugged mountains and pine forests.

The train connects Kalka, just north of Chandigarh, to Shimla in Himachal Pradesh state . The captivating train route runs for 96 kilometers (60 miles) through 20 railway stations, 103 tunnels, 800 bridges, and an incredible 900 curves.

The longest tunnel, which stretches for more than a kilometer, is near the main railway station at Barog. The most spectacular scenery occurs from Barog to Shimla. The train's speed is greatly restricted by the steep gradient that it has to climb, but this allows for plenty of fascinating sightseeing along the way. Be prepared for a five to six hour train ride though!

Tourist Train Services

Four regular tourist train services run on the Kalka Shimla railway. These are:

  • Shivalik Deluxe Express -- a premium express train with carpet, wide glass windows, cushioned seats, relaxing music, and upgraded toilets. It fits 120 passengers. Food is provided, and the train only has one stop at Barog.
  • Himalayan Queen -- a standard train, with first and second class carriages. Food isn't provided but can be purchased at the nine stations it stops at along the way. Some of the stops are for 5-10 minutes, so this train is the most suitable for those who like to get out and explore. You'll be able to take plenty of photos.
  • Rail Motor Car -- uniquely resembles a bus from the time of the Second World War. It's got a transparent roof, and fits only 14 passengers. It's also an express service, with food provided. There is one stop, at Barog. It can be difficult to get tickets though.
  • Vistadome Him Darshan Express -- a new train with seven carriages featuring glass roofs and modified windows to provide panoramic views. It is the only train that's air-conditioned.

To have the most comfortable experience, choose either the Shivalik Deluxe Express, Rail Motor Car, or Vistadome trains. Unless you travel in first class, common complains about the Himalayan Queen are overcrowding, hard bench seats, dirty toilets and nowhere to store luggage.

Both carriages were recently refurbished to become part of the new train service, which aims to recreate the bygone era for passengers. Charter tour packages are offered by Indian Railways. More information is available here.

Indian Railways has also announced plans to revamp the first class carriages of the Shivalik Deluxe Express.

Train Reservations

Tickets can be booked online on the Indian Railways website or at Indian Railways booking offices. It's recommended that you book as early as possible, especially during the summer months from April to June.

Travel Tips

Kalka–Shimla Railway

Kalka, Haryana, India

Toy train Kalka-Shimla route, moving on railway to the hill, among green natural forest. shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India.

Credit Shutterstock.com/ImagesofIndia

One of the great hill railway journeys of India, the narrow-gauge line to Shimla climbs 1,219m in 96km, threading through 107 tunnels and crossing 800 bridges, some of them large viaducts. The line never seems to be straight as it twists and turns around the hills, giving passengers ever better views over the Himalayan foothills and sections of line below.

Shimla was the summer capital of the British Raj from 1864 and the headquarters of the British army.

Getting there & doing it

Kalka is reached by direct train from Delhi, the overnight train known as the Kalka Mail arriving at Kalka around dawn to give good light for the connecting train to Shimla.

The Shivalik Deluxe Express is the premium service, with carpeted carriages, comfy seats, wide windows and piped music. Breakfast is served on the way up and dinner on the way down. The cheaper Himalayan Queen service has no food car.

Unless you want to photograph some of the railway’s impressive viaducts, there are few reasons to break the journey. It’s advisable to book in advance – but difficult to do using the Indian Railways website, so book via a travel agent.

When to do it

Trains depart from Kalka all year round, seven days a week, with trains timed to meet with incoming morning trains from Delhi and Kolkata.

Clear, cold winter days in October and November afford the best visibility.

Avoid the monsoon season – 4 or 5 months of heavy rains beginning in late May/June.

Thousands of Hilton, Hyatt, and Marriott Hotel Workers Go on Strike — What to Know

Hotels in Baltimore, Boston, Greenwich, Honolulu, Kauai, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, and Seattle have been affected.

tour & travels kalka

Jessica Christian/San Francisco Chronicle via Getty Images

Thousands of hotel workers are on strike across the country, demanding better wages and workloads and a reversal of COVID-19-era cuts.

The striking workers, which include housekeepers and other employees represented by the UNITE HERE union, walked off the job at 25 hotels in nine cities across the country, including in Baltimore, Boston, Greenwich, Honolulu, Kauai, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, and Seattle. The workers are employees at major hotel chains like Hilton , Hyatt , and Marriott .

“Ten thousand hotel workers across the U.S. are on strike because the hotel industry has gotten off track,” Gwen Mills, the international president of UNITE HERE, said in a statement . “During COVID, everyone suffered, but now the hotel industry is making record profits while workers and guests are left behind. Too many hotels still haven’t restored standard services that guests deserve, like automatic daily housekeeping and room service… We won’t accept a ‘new normal’ where hotel companies profit by cutting their offerings to guests and abandoning their commitments to workers.”

Each city’s strike is expected to last up to three days. Additional strikes have been authorized in New Haven, Oakland, and Providence, according to the union .

While affected hotels will still be open, UNITE HERE warned potential hotel guests that picket lines would run outside affected hotels for up to 24 hours a day.

Michael D’Angelo, the head of labor relations for Hyatt in the Americas, told Travel + Leisure the hotel group had “contingency plans in place to minimize impact on hotel operations related to strike activity.”

“Our colleagues are the heart of our business, and Hyatt has a long history of cooperation with the unions that represent our employees, including UNITE HERE,” D’Angelo said. “We are disappointed that UNITE HERE has chosen to strike while Hyatt remains willing to continue bargaining in good faith.”

Representatives for Hilton and Marriott did not immediately respond to requests for comment from T+L. A representative for Hilton similarly told the Associated Press the hotel was committed to negotiating with workers.

UNITE HERE has a proven track record of hotel strikes. A previously organized strike in Southern California resulted in significant wage hikes, increased employer contributions to pensions, and fair workload guarantees with 34 hotels, according to the AP.

  • All U.S. passports are invalid for travel to, in, or through the DPRK unless specially validated for such travel under the authority of the Secretary of State.
  • Special validations are granted only in very limited circumstances. More information on how to apply for the special validation is available  here .

For more information U.S. citizens should consult the  Federal Aviation Administration’s Prohibitions, Restrictions and Notices .

Read the  country information page  for additional information on travel to North Korea.

  • Draft a will and designate appropriate insurance beneficiaries and/or power of attorney.
  • Discuss a plan with loved ones regarding care/custody of children, pets, property, belongings, non-liquid assets (collections, artwork, etc.), funeral wishes, etc.
